 WELCOME ABOARD!  Mother Earth gave us more water than dirt. So isn’t it strange that the major means of transportation we humans have developed are on the earth and in the sky? Before history, our clever ancestors built boats powered by oars, paddles and sails. Traditional watercraft offer more than just transportation. A small boat afloat is a sensual environment. The water surface moves in countless ways, there are ever-changing colors, reflections, sounds, smells and a sense of independence. We invite you to come and indulge in the wonders of traditional small craft. You can build a boat, build its oars, paddles, spars and sails, tie knots, cast bronze, navigate by stars, learn to row, paddle and sail CWB’s collection of wooden small boats designed and time-tested in earlier times. You can build a boat model or even capture boat images in spontaneous pursuit of the arts of painting, drawing, photography and more. The direct experience programs of CWB will teach you more than just heritage skills. You will be using the analytic and creative parts of your mind at the same time, just the way you learned to talk, walk and ride a two-wheel bike. What you learn with hand and mind will be long remembered and can be used throughout your life. And if you ever are shipwrecked, the skills you mastered will be your textbook of survival.

Instructor: Eric Hvalsoe Session 1: June 9 & 10 Session 2: September 22 & 23 Time: 9 am - 5 pm (Saturday & Sunday) Cost: $200 members / $250 non-members Lofting is a vital tool, typically the first step in building a new boat. It is a fascinating mental exercise in three-dimensional management and layering. We will discuss construction details, set-up and building molds for the real thing. Newcomers, put on your thinking caps! Veterans may even learn a trick or two. Reading about lofting is not enough; you’ve got to do it! Limit: 8 students

Instructor: Tim Reagan Date: June 16 Time: 10 am - 2 pm (Saturday) Cost: $50 members / $60 non-members

Instructor: Sam Johnson Date: August 25 & 26 Time: 9 am - 5 pm (Saturday & Sunday) Cost: $280 members / $350 non-members

A tight wooden boat is a strong boat. This workshop is for boat owners who want to do their own repairs or the shipwright who replaces planks and wants to caulk them with confidence. Tim will explain and demonstrate the techniques of examining a boat to determine the extent of repair and caulking required. It’s hands on; if you have irons and a mallet bring them along.

Learn how to use all the tools necessary to cast hot metal using sand-casting technology. Sam Johnson will cover the basics of patternmaking, sand molding and bronze casting during this engaging hands-on course. Students will make patterns of their designs to cast tools, boat hardware and other objects in bronze. Boatbuilders in particular often need special bronze fittings that are not available but can be cast without great expense. Anyone who has ever lost an oarlock will appreciate learning how to make copies of original hardware. Students also will learn how to build their own inexpensive furnace. Patterns will be provided for students use.

Limit: 12 students

Traditionally, boats were designed from half models. From the carved hull form, lines were drawn and scaled up to create full-size patterns. Students will mount their half models on boards, ready for display!

You’ll save money and help a valued community treasure at the same time!

The Center for Wooden Boats is a unique museum in that we not only maintain and interpret original historic wooden boats for public use, but we are also a community that is greatly defined by our corps of more than 500 active volunteers. You can find volunteers here who can tell you the type of hardware used on a 1926 R-boat or the best place to drop anchor in the San Juans. The time and talents of our volunteers are something The Center for Wooden Boats appreciates just as much as any monetary gift. Volunteer positions include the front desk, livery, sailing instruction, boatshop work, special events, building maintenance, boathouse crew, gardening, merchandising and computer/clerical work. If you believe in our mission, we can find a way to utilize your skills!

 THE CWB LIVERY  Livery is the traditional name for boat rentals. Seattle has a long history of active liveries; they were oases in the city, with attractive stick-and-shingle buildings, landscaped uplands, clear water and dust-free air. Seattle’s main boat liveries were at Madison Park, Leschi Park, Rainier Beach, Greenlake and Jensen’s Grove on Lake Union. The boats were classic little yachts, tricked out with glistening coats of varnish. It was the golden age of small craft providing a relaxing escape from the bustling factories and offices of the city. At CWB we are proud to share our assortment of traditional rowboats and sailboats with the community. Come try them all! To learn more about our different boats, visit www.cwb.org

Zip around Lake Union in a truly small boat this summer! El Toros, 8’ wooden prams used in our Youth Sailing programs, are available to both youth and adults in the Livery on weekends (summer and fall). Designed during “Bull Sessions” at the Richmond Yacht Club in 1936, the little El Toro is a popular one-design sailboat; more than 11,000 have been built, and it’s now the most popular dinghy in San Francisco Bay. Created as both a yacht tender and for sail training, the small and maneuverable El Toro is a particularly excellent boat for kids. A current sailing checkout is required for adults and youth*.

Checkout Sail Before using our sailboats, a checkout must be arranged with one of the Livery staff or scheduled in advance. Checkouts last 3045 minutes, cost $10 and can be done on a walk-in basis during weekend Livery hours or by appointment pending availability. The purpose of a checkout is to make sure you are comfortable handling traditional small boats and to answer any questions you may have about the boat you have chosen. A checkout is not a sailing lesson. Please contact CWB’s front desk at (206) 382-2628 to schedule or visit www.cwb.org

This program is conducted at a participating school or community center and requires a minimum of five students and teacher participation. For more information and pricing, contact Mindy Ross at mross@cwb.org Follow the construction of a pond boat at www.r-boat.org or test sail a Pirate pond boat from 11 am to 2 pm on Saturdays and Sundays from May through November.

This was hands-down the best field trip that I've ever taken a class on. Our school is modeled around hands-on learning and children making meaningful connections to nature and their surroundings. We shy away from the normal field trips and this was all around a very meaningful event for my students- they're still talking about it! - Cedar River Academy
