In 1977 the first Lake Union Wooden Boat Festival welcomed visitors near and far to share their love of wooden small craft. 37 years later, we welcome you to build a toy boat, take a ride, learn a skill, sail a model boat and soak up the joy and the history that wooden boats have to offer.

SCHOONER ADVENTURESS CELEBRATES HER CENTENNIAL Arriving Friday // Noon

Hear about the history and Centennial Restoration of the Schooner Adventuress at MOHAI, 4pm-5pm. Come on board for the Shanty Sing, brought to you by Northwest Seaport, 7:30Observe teams throughout the 9:30pm. Saturday and Sunday, weekend as they frantically build she will be open for dockside boats in just 24 hours. They tours 10am-4pm, and going will discover the seaworthiness out for Festival Sails 5pm-9pm of their vessels at 4pm Sunday. (purchase tickets at the Sound Experience booth. Monday, July 8th

This classic event gives families and friends the opportunity to work together to develop new skills, create lasting memories and build a boat they can take home at the end of the Lake Union Wooden Boat Festival.

The Seattle Mariners have partnered with CWB to bring you discounted tickets ($20 View Level) to the Monday, July 8th game against the Boston Red Sox. Purchase tickets online at www. mariners.com/cwb, and part of your ticket price goes to support The Center for Wooden Boats! Tickets must be purchased online by 5pm on Friday, July 5th. Bring your whole family or take your coworkers out for a night on the town.

Compete in Nautical Trivia in the World Sports Grille Festival Pub for special prizes and more! Trivia questions will range from MUSIC All Days // 10am-6pm // Stage // www.cwb.org for details Festival stats and facts to maritime history to local culture. Check out the music stage, located next to the World Sports Grill SKIN-ON-FRAME KAYAK BUILDING Festival Pub, to hear music by local maritime and folk artists. All Days // 10am-6pm // Pavillion Music is appropriate for all ages. Line-up includes: Piper Stock Hill, The Aleut Ikyak, also widely known as the Baidarka, has been used for thousands of years as the primary method of transportation in the Aleutian Islands. Here students build their own boat, made primarily of yellow and red cedar with all joinery pegged and lashed – no metal fastenings or glues.

Pick up the tools to build your own tiny wooden ship. Shape a sail and decorate your hull. It’s never too late to add to your fleet! Fun for kids of all ages.

Head to the Model Boat Pond for some sailing fun. Lake Union Park is home to a 100’ diameter model boat pond. Model boats, designed after the R-boat Pirate in CWB’s collection, will be available KITE MAKING & KNOT TYING to sail and enjoy. A great way to learn the principles of sailing! // Suggested Age 10+ Learn to tie a Turk’s Head knot and When you’re finished sailing, see make a bracelet for your friends the real Pirate on CWB’s docks! to admire. Create a kite to fly in the park.

SCAVENGER HUNT // Suggested Age 6+

The first clue is in the Junior Sailor section of Shavings (Page 11). Can you locate all the clues and find the treasure? Time to test your wayfinding skills and nautical knowledge. For more Scavenger Hunt fun, make another visit to CWB after the Festival to learn more about boats, nautical history and maritime trivia.

PIRATE STORY TIME // All Ages // Thursday, Saturday & Sunday 1pm

All pirates and pirate wannabes should head for the 114-yearold tugboat Arthur Foss on the Historic Ships Wharf for pirate tales and legends. HANDS-ON AT MOHAI Visit the Atrium to make your own paper luminary, then head to the Maritime Wing for hands-on activities by PSMHS. Museum admission required.

Come to the “cork board” to learn how to pound cotton into carvel seams. Caulking, or “Corking” is one of the oldest techniques still used to keep our boats dry. We will be using cotton and oakum along with an assortment of traditional tools to finish off our seams and reef cotton out of old seams.

“When a chisel is sharpened correctly it stays sharper longer.” Roy will guide you to discover the tricks of the trade. Learn the specific procedures for sharpening and maintaining sharp tools. Bring your own chisels. MARINE PAINTING

A crash course in all things paint! We will go though the tools of Drop in to the CWB Boatshop to ask CWB’s resident boatwright the trades and demystify marine paint products. You will learn questions about wooden boat maintentance, repair, construction what paint is best for you; how to prep, prime, and topcoat your and ownership! This is your chance for some technical advice from next project. a professional boatwright! SPAR MAKING VARNISHING YOUR BOAT

Learn how to make square things round using traditional tools. Get hands on with draw knives and smoothing planes to shape a spar section. Also discussed is how to build your own spar gauge and how to select the best wood for spars.

Learn how to correctly strip varnish using a heat gun and scraper. Also repair and patching of existing varnish. Bring your questions! Pick up some hot tips from a brightwork expert.

Ever wonder how those ancient mariners found their way about the globe using only compass, timepiece and sextant? Captain Sanders will introduce you to this mysterious and complicated process.

Meet at the Model Boat Pond for a 30-minute tour of Lake Union Park led by MOHAI history buffs. Learn the history of Lake Union and share stories of the lake while you enjoy Seattle’s summer sun.
