The show w i l l be h e l d a g a i n a t the U. S. N a v a l Reserve Base, South end of Lake Union. A d m i s s i o n i s f r e e .

Our g o a l i s t o p r o v i d e a g a t h e r i n g o f wooden b o a t s , o l d and new, r e p l i c a s and r e s t o r a t i o n s . Events w i l l i n c l u d e rowing and s a i l i n g races d a i l y , f i l m s , s p e a k e r s , a t o y b o a t b u i l d i n g shop f o r y o u n g s t e r s , chantey s i n g e r s , and an a u c t i o n o f m a r i t i m e gear. A n A t k i n P r e c i o u s " s k i f f , b u i l t b y R i p Knot, w i l l be raffled. Boat b u i l d e r s and r e s t o r e r s , b o t h p r o f e s s i o n a l and amateur, w i l l d i s p l a y t h e i r work o n l a n d and i n t h e w a t e r . Other d i s p l a y s w i l l i n c l u d e b o a t d e s i g n s , t o o l s , f a s t e n i n g s , wood, and equipment f o r t r a d i t i o n a l s m a l l c r a f t . The c e n t e r p i e c e o f the b o a t d i s p l a y s w i l l be t h e handsome Dutch l e e b o a r d e r , the "Groote B e e r , " c o u r t e s y o f the Sea E x p l o r e r s . We need d o n a t i o n s f o r t h e a u c t i o n and s a l e : t o o l s , equipment, rope o f a l l s i z e s , o l d b o a t i n g magazines--whatever you have o f w o r t h and i n t e r e s t . And the P l a n n i n g Committee needs l o t s of v o l u n t e e r s h e l p , now and through the show p e r i o d . I f we a l l p u l l t o g e t h e r , we can p u t on the b e s t show i n town.

A MODERN VIKING SHIP P a u l Schweiss/ Tacoma, WA b o a t b u i l d e r , who has s p e c i a l i z e d i n S c a n d i n a v i a n s m a l l c r a f t , d e p a r t e d May 1 on a r e s e a r c h t r i p t o Norway and Denmark. P a u l has taken on an assignment to b u i l d a 5 0 ' V i k i n g s h i p , u s i n g the b a s i c "karv" form, w h i c h , u n l i k e the dragon o r l o n g s h i p s , d i d not have t h w a r t s , but a n a l t e r n a t i v e t r a n s v e r s e f r a m i n g system. The oarsmen i n t h e s e b o a t s s a t on sea c h e s t s . The Gokstad and Oseberg s h i p s were k a r v s . D a v i d Anders T l d e n , of Boston, has commissioned the V i k i n g s h i p . Tilden i s sponsoring Paul's e x p e d i t i o n t o S c a n d i n a v i a , where P a u l w i l l t a l k w i t h t h e e x p e r t s , v i s i t museums, and hopef u l l y b e a b l e t o t r y out s e v e r a l o f the r e p l i c a s t h a t have been b u i l t . Paul plans to begin c o n s t r u c t i o n of the r e p l i c a s h i p , o n the sponsor's New England farm, in the F a l l . We hope to be a b l e to c a r r y a r u n n i n g account o f P a u l ' s r e s e a r c h and the building project. Tom Beard i s w o r k i n g on the P o u l s b o s t o r y . Tom has completed measured drawings of the t h r e e e x i s t i n g h a l f models o f R o l a n d Young. C o p i e s of t h e drawings a r e a v a i l a b l e f o r $2.50 each. Tom w i l l be measuring and drawing up two o t h e r models. The l i n e s and o f f s e t s w i l l be i n c l u d e d i n reduced s c a l e i n Tom's monograph, as w e l l as a v a i l a b l e as f u l l s c a l e p r i n t s . THE FLEET GROWS The Lake Oswego b o a t , w h i c h l o o k s much l i k e a Rangely, i s now i n S e a t t l e . The Columbia bow p i c k e r has been c l e a n e d up and covered u n t i l w e can f i n d s t o r a g e . A 24' x 60' boathouse, now at P i o n e e r M a r i n a on t h e Duwamish, has been g i v e n t o the C e n t e r , p o s s i b l y t o b e added t o o u r permanent s i t e , i n t i m e . DIRECTOR APPOINTED A t a s p e c i a l meeting, A p r i l 19, the E x e c u t i v e Committee a c c e p t e d a p r o p o s a l t o a p p o i n t a D i r e c t o r o f the C e n t e r . D i c k Wagner w i l l h o l d t h e p o s i t i o n , which w i l l be n o n - s a l a r i e d f o r t h e p r e s e n t , becoming a f u l l t i m e , s a l a r i e d a c t i v i t y probably i n mid-Spring, next y e a r . D i c k w i l l have r e s p o n s i b i l i t y t o pursue a c q u i s i t i o n o f a s i t e , d e v e l o p ment o f t h e s i t e , and c o o r d i n a t i o n o f the a c t i v i t i e s o f permanent and ad hoc committees, development o f g r a n t a p p l i c a t i o n s , and o t h e r d e v e l o p m e n t a l and p r o m o t i o n a l a c t i v i t i e s .

H o p e f u l l y , t h e n e x t i s s u e o f SHAVINGS w i l l b e a b l e t o r e p o r t p r o g r e s s i n the site selection project. I f w e can a c q u i r e and d e v e l o p a s i t e n e x t y e a r , we w i l l have t a k e n a c r u c i a l s t e p i n t h e p r o c e s s o f making a r e a l i t y o f the Center's g o a l s .

FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK On development of a permanent s i t e f o r the C e n t e r , D i c k and C o l l e e n ' s f l e e t o f t r a d i t i o n a l wooden b o a t s w i l l go "on l o a n " to t h e C e n t e r , as a source of income and n u c l e u s of a w o r k i n g f l e e t of t r a d i t i o n a l small c r a f t available to the p u b l i c .

W i t h t h i s t h i r d i s s u e o f SHAVINGS, we b e g i n t o b r i n g news o f t h e b r o a d e r a c t i v i t i e s o f o u r membership, as w e l l as items from t h e home p o r t . A t i t s meeting A p r i l 19, the E x e c u t i v e Committee approved a motion t h a t "The C e n t e r f o r Wooden Boats a c t i v e l y pursue a c q u i s i t i o n o f a permanent p h y s i c a l s i t e o n Lake Union." L i k e l y s i t e s t o be e x p l o r e d i n c l u d e Waterway 19, on the E a s t s i d e of Gasworks P a r k , and the waterway West of the N a v a l Reserve Base, where the San Mateo now is moored.

SAWDUST The OARS Rowing R e g a t t a and Seaboat F e s t i v a l w i l l b e h e l d J u l y 28, 2 9 o n Bowman Bay, near D e c e p t i o n P a s s , South o f A n a c o r t e s . Saturday e v e n t s w i l l include competition in three c l a s s e s : Newman, 16' o r l e s s , one rower, o a r s on gunwales, f i x e d s e a t ; V a n d r a f a l k e n , t o 20', 2 rowers p l u s o b s e r v e r , o a r s on gunwales, equipped t o s a i l ; U n l i m i t e d , no l i m i t on rowers, o a r s on gunwales. The f i r s t o f the three-heat events w i l l s t a r t at 10:00 AM. An awards d i n n e r and p a r t y w i l l f o l l o w , Saturday evening. The Sunday c o m p e t i t i o n w i l l be a timed m i l e , w i t h " A u t h e n t i c a t e d World Record C e r t i f i c a t e s " p r e s e n t e d to p r e - r e g i s t e r e d boats. The C e n t e r e x h i b i t e d our Northwest t r a d i t i o n a l 12 R e i n e l l rowing and motor boat i n the A n a c o r t e s C e n t e n n i a l Boat Show, A p r i l 20-22. Dennis Corum made a l a r g e canvas s i g n f o r the event. Members s t a f f e d the C e n t e r booth t o d i s t r i b u t e b r o c h u r e s and take memberapplications . * * * 1

Skookum F a s t e n i n g s , of A n a c o r t e s , WA, produced and s o l d i n 1978 enough copper r i v e t s , r o v e s , and c l e n c h n a i l s t o c o n s t r u c t 550 16' W h i t e h a l l p u l l i n g boats. The 1978 p r o d u c t i o n was e q u a l to the p r e v i o u s two y e a r s combined. "Good g o i n g , " M a r t y and D i a n a . * * *

The C e n t e r s p o n s o r e d and Open House, March 4, at t h e O l d Boathouse, f o r Bob Coe's 20' Swampscott d o r y . The weather was u n c o o p e r a t i v e , b u t we had a good turnout. Bob and crew l e f t under mains a i l o n l y , as dusk came on, and f l a s h e d down the Lake l i k e a r o c k e t . Bob promises t o b r i n g the Swampscott t o t h e Boat Show. Other b u i l d e r s a r e encouraged t o g i v e u s the o p p o r t u n i t y t o h o s t t h e i r b o a t s .
