WHAT TO DO?

A CHANCE TO HELP!

O c c a s i o n a l l y i t seems wise t o l e t people know you need h e l p . We are c o n s t a n t l y f o r c e d at CWB to decide between p r o j e c t s , r e s p o n s i b i l i t i e s , j o b s . It is never p o s s i b l e to accomplish more than a s m a l l percentage of what we would l i k e t o do; what we should do. S p e c i f i c a l l y , r e c e n t l y we have been f a c e d w i t h c h o i c e s between; dock r e p a i r and boat maintenance, o f f i c e work and p r e p a r a t i o n of e d u c a t i o n a l m a t e r i a l s , f u n d r a i s i n g and upgrading i n t e r p r e t i v e m a t e r i a l s , boat a c q u i s i t i o n ( i t takes a l o t o f s t a f f time t o respond t o a l l p o t e n t i a l donor i n q u i r i e s ) and housekeeping, p o l i t i c a l a c t i o n and p u b l i c a t i o n . The c h o i c e s we have made i n the l a s t s e v e r a l months are b e g i n n i n g t o pay dividends. The damage t o our f l o a t i n g docks has been r e p a i r e d , boat r e s t o r a t i o n i s i n h i g h gear. Our enhanced e d u c a t i o n a l programs f o r s c h o o l c h i l d r e n w i l l b e very e x c i t i n g , the i n t e r p r e t i v e m a t e r i a l s w i l l b e o f h i g h e r q u a l i t y and more abundant t h i s year. We had the most s u c c e s s f u l end-of-theyear f u n d r a i s i n g campaign ever t h i s year ( d e s p i t e c a n c e l l a t i o n of 75% of our phonathon by the a r c t i c storms). We are e x p e c t i n g good news any day on the f u t u r e of the Maritime H e r i t a g e Center at South Lake Union Park. We have j u s t r e c e i v e d word of a grant t o r e s t o r e some of our boats, and 4 o t h e r grant a p p l i c a t i o n s are i n the p i p e l i n e f o r needed p r o j e c t s r a n g i n g from p u b l i c a t i o n to restoration. As a r e s u l t of these c h o i c e s , we have been unable to spend enough time on c l e r i c a l / t y p i n g / d a t a entry tasks. Therefore i t has taken u s a l o n g time t o c a t c h up on the m a i l i n g s made necessary by the end-of-the-year campaign, and we are s e r i o u s l y behind schedule on p u b l i c a t i o n of Shavings. These two problems can o n l y be r e l i e v e d by spending more s t a f f time on such c l e r i c a l / t y p i n g / d a t a entry tasks. There is not enough time to go around, so we continue to rob P e t e r ' s c l o c k to g i v e more hours to P a u l ' s . We have decided to a l l o w you, our l o y a l r e a d e r s , to h e l p us out by i n d i r e c t l y (or d i r e c t l y ) c o n t r i b u t i n g t o a d d i t i o n a l cash flow.
