T H E RIGHTS O ' M A N GIG By Carl Brownstein I n 1977 I w a s a s k e d t o d e s i g n a b o a t s u i t a b l e f o r s t u d e n t s t o r o w a n d sail o n Puget S o u n d a s p a r t o f a M a r i n e S t u d i e s p r o g r a m a t E v e r g r e e n State College, O l y m p i a . Students w e r e to pay for materials and build the boats under my supervision. I h a d r e c e n t l y r e a d a b o u t t h e p i l o t gigs o f E n g l a n d a n d w a s f a s c i n a t e d b y t h e i r e x p l o i t s i n s a v i n g lives a n d c a r g o f r o m w r e c k e d s h i p s , o r smuggling g o o d s across the English C h a n n e l . Built to race, these boats w e r e d e f i n i t e l y d e s i g n e d t o get f r o m h e r e t o t h e r e t h e fastest p o s s i b l e w a y . F e w s a i l i n g b o a t s , e v e n t o d a y , a r e c a p a b l e o f c a t c h i n g a gig r o w i n g dead to windward. My preliminary designs e x p l o r e d load-carrying capacities versus c o s t s . T h e final d e s i g n w a s a 2 1 - f o o t b o a t that s h o w e d t h e i n s p i r a t i o n o f t h e N o r t h S e a Pilot G i g s , c a p a b l e o f c a r r y i n g five c r e w m e m b e r s a n d g e a r f o r c a m p i n g t r i p s a l o n g t h e s h o r e s o f Puget S o u n d . T h e b o a t s have a f o u r - f o o t b e a m , w e i g h 3 5 0 p o u n d s a n d h a v e a d i s p l a c e m e n t to 1,500 pounds. A class o f 4 0 s t u d e n t s built f o u r gigs i n t w o a c a d e m i c q u a r t e r s a t Evergreen College. Launched on a blustery April day with winds g u s t i n g t o 4 0 m i l e s per h o u r , t h e b o a t s q u i c k l y p r o v e d that t h e y c o u l d b e r o w e d easily a n d h a n d l e d w e l l . . . e v e n b y n o v i c e c r e w s i n a h e a v y b l o w . I n t h e i r first full d a y o n t h e w a t e r , l o a d e d w i t h c a m p i n g g e a r , t h e students put 25 miles behind t h e m . S i n c e that d a y t h e gigs h a v e b e e n r o w e d a n d sailed o v e r a t h o u s a n d miles b e t w e e n O l y m p i a a n d t h e n o r t h e n d o f V a n c o u v e r I s l a n d , a n d t h e y ' v e e x p l o r e d m o s t o f t h e inlets o f Puget S o u n d . T h e b o a t s h a v e e x p e r i e n c e d w i n d s u p t o 5 0 m i l e s p e r h o u r a n d s t e e p c h o p u p t o five feet h i g h . U n d e r sail t h e b o a t s h a v e c o v e r e d 4 0 m i l e s i n 5 1 / 2 h o u r s (better than a 7 knot average). Under oars, crews consistently clock 5 k n o t s in long-distance races. B e c a u s e t h e gigs a r e l o n g a n d n a r r o w t h e y a r e easy t o r o w a n d c a p a b l e o f g e t t i n g o u t o f tight s i t u a t i o n s b y r o w i n g against w i n d o r c u r r e n t s . S t i l l , t h e small b e a m - t o - l e n g t h r a t i o d o e s n o t m a k e t h e m t i p p y . m a s t a n d left s t a n d i n g w h e n a t a n c h o r i n a s t o r m , o r w h e n t o w e d b y a fishing boat. C o m p e t i t i v e rowing for four-oared boats is slowly c a t c h i n g o n . In the O l y m p i a a r e a t h e field has e x p a n d e d t o t h r e e m e n ' s t e a m s a n d o n e women's team and combinations of men's and women's teams, making f o r a n i n t e r e s t i n g set o f h e a t s u s i n g j u s t t w o b o a t s . T h e c r e w s p r a c t i c e on different evenings a n d so even o n e boat c o u l d serve 20 or 30 r o w e r s . I n p a s t y e a r s A n a c o r t e s has u s e d o n e o f t h e R i g h t s O ' M a n gigs a n d fielded s o m e f o r m i d a b l e c o m p e t i t i o n . T h i s year t h e y a r e e x p e c t i n g t o have t h e i r o w n b o a t a n d s h o u l d m a k e f o r s o m e e x c i t i n g r a c e s . H a v i n g built s e v e r a l W h i t e h a l l t y p e d e s i g n s , i n c l u d i n g t h e gigs, I h a v e f o u n d t h e l o n g , d e e p s k e g w o r t h l e s s . A k i c k - u p r u d d e r w o u l d also h o l d a true course without being subject to damage. T h e long, deep skeg makes c o m i n g about or rounding a racing buoy an impossible chore. Off with the skeg! W h e n I b u i l d a n o t h e r gig I'll raise t h e s h e e r t h r e e i n c h e s a t t h e s t e m , m o s t l y for l o o k s b u t a l s o t o h e l p k e e p d r y w h e n d r i v i n g t o w i n d w a r d . I w o u l d s h o r t e n the c e n t e r b o a r d case a n d m a k e i t a d a g g e r b o a r d , a n d m o v e the s e c o n d and t h i r d t h w a r t s closer together to give b o w and stroke oar more r o o m to move. T h e gigs h a v e p r o v i d e d a d v e n t u r e , e x e r c i s e a n d r o m a n c e t o a v a r i e t y of students a n d c o m m u n i t y groups. These boats have proven to be highly versatile a n d successful cruising craft lor N o r t h w e s t w a t e r s just a s t h e y w e r e d u r i n g t h e d a y s o f e a r l y e x p l o r e r s i n t h e r e g i o n .

By Marty Loken T h e s e a r c h f o r a g o o d little d i n g h y c a n lead t o m u l t i p l e d o s e s o f E x c e d r i n . S o m e c a n d i d a t e s a r e u n b e l i e v a b l y ugly a n d u n - b o a t l i k e . M a n y are too heavy, considering their intended purpose. M o s t are too e x p e n s i v e . A n d d i n g h i e s t h a t a r e s m a l l e n o u g h t o fit g r a c e f u l l y o n d e c k o f t e n c a n n o t safely c a r r y a r e s p e c t a b l e l o a d o f k i d s , d o g s a n d / o r sixpacks. If y o u ' r e in a dither over dinghies, we have three possible solutions.
THE LITTLE B O A T WITHOUT A BOW A man with a faint accent, whom I suspected was not a native of Tacoma, asked me to build him a boat. My suspicion was confirmed when he said what he wanted was designed by some person who probably was from Berlin. I was supposed to look at the craft in a book on sensible cruising. " W o w , " I thought, "Nereia will be some fun to build even if it is 36 feet long and my shop is only 2 6 . . . " I discovered shortly, however, that we were not to build the big vessel, but the little dink that was kept on deck. This Herr Eshoff sure seemed devious to fix it so I would see the big boat first when I looked in his book. A r m i n - he was the man who wanted me to build the little 8 footer he said that the dinghy was an important vessel because that was how you got beer and pizza when at anchor. My honor thus appeased, we commenced construction. We built her upside down over three molds. The bottom is plywood since this avoids transverse frames and extra seams, though one piece of plywood is more difficult to spring than several narrow planks bent over the molds one by one. She is a pram, which means when you look for a bow you only find another transom. These two transoms were made out of cherry. Her chine logs, which were necessitated by the plywood bottom, are yellow cedar and her four strakes are of vertical-grain red cedar.

A r m i n is a master violin maker and his idea of a fair seam is one which is invisible. Some people can tell whether a wine is foreign or domestic by gargling it. Armin can tell if a piece of spruce is American or European by rapping it with his knuckles. He had another strange penchant. He wanted to see the boat during construction. Each time he came to the shop I would lock the doors and meet him outside. I'd say "we're fumigating," and he'd reply, "Again??"
When the little boat was done, we met in Eagle Harbor for a launching. I told Armin something must have gone wrong. His boat looked like a wooden shoe. He informed me that was the correct way for it to look. We were all surprised at the ease with which it handled as well as its stability and relative speed under oars. Maybe A r m i n was just lucky, or maybe that fellow Herr Eshoff knows something about boats after

O u r goal: M c M i c k e n I s l a n d , a s m a l l m a r i n e s t a t e p a r k n e s t i n g c l o s e t o t h e east s h o r e o f Hartstene Island, about halfway up. M c M i c k e n is an island o n l y at high tide. At low tide a c a u s e w a y reaches across to the larger island, p e r m i t t i n g p e d e s t r i a n access. D e s p i t e t h i s , t h e large m e a d o w a v a i l a b l e f o r c a m p i n g a p p e a r s t o get light u s e , c o m p a r e d t o b e t t e r - k n o w n d e s t i n a t i o n s . O u r launching point was Zittels M a r i n a at J o h n s o n Point, w h i c h is n o r t h a n d east o f O l y m p i a . W e h a n d - l a u n c h e d t h e b o a t s , s a v i n g t h e $5.00 ( r o u n d t r i p ) c h a r g e f o r u s i n g t h e m a r i n a r a m p . C o m m e n t i s invited o n this: r a m p s are t o o few a n d p e r h a p s w e s h o u l d p a t r o n i z e those w h i c h are privately maintained, e n c o u r a g i n g their c o n t i n u e d existence. An alternative beginning point is the Robert F. K e n n e d y Recreation A r e a o n T a y l o r B a y , w h i c h i s o n t h e m a i n l a n d east o f J o h n s o n P o i n t . T h e t w o put in points are a p p r o x i m a t e l y equidistant f r o m M c M i c k e n . R o w i n g n o r t h f r o m J o h n s o n P o i n t , o u r little fleet s o o n p a s s e d t h r o u g h t h e a r m a d a o f s p o r t f i s h e r m e n a n c h o r e d off t h e p o i n t a n d p r o c e e d e d u p t h e flat w a t e r s o f C a s e I n l e t . S u c h a j o u r n e y is a d e l i g h t . S t a y i n g c l o s e t o g e t h e r , all s e v e n v o y a g e r s could share conversation, despite being spread across three boats. Occasionally one boat w o u l d d r o p back while the c r e w w e n t for a s w i m , but rowing together was the n o r m . O u r d e s t i n a t i o n w a s a p p r o x i m a t e l y six s t a t u t e m i l e s a w a y , b u t w e h a d c l e v e r l y o m i t t e d a p e r u s a l o f t h e tide t a b l e s f r o m o u r p l a n n i n g . A s a r e s u l t , w e b u c k e d t h e tide b o t h g o i n g a n d r e t u r n i n g , w h i c h a d d e d t w o or three miles to the total over-water distance. (Read y o u r tide tables a n d y o u might d o this t r i p i n 1 0 m i l e s o f r o w i n g i n s t e a d 14!) A pleasant b r e a k c a n b e h a d b y s t o p p i n g a t H a r t s t e n e I s l a n d ' s F u d g e Point. M y f a v o r i t e c o x was a diminutive blonde w h o steered the California W o m e n ' s H e a v y w e i g h t Eight i n last y e a r ' s O p e n i n g D a y r e g a t t a . A s t h e y s w e p t b y , n e c k a n d n e c k w i t h t h e W a s h i n g t o n s h e l l , she w a s p o u n d i n g o u t t h e s t r o k e on the gunwales a n d shrieking, " P o w e r 10 c o m i n g ! I n f a c t , t h e o n l y t i m e S t r o k e O a r and I ever heard a n y t h i n g original f r o m the shore was o n c e during a r o w on the D u w a m i s h . As we headed u p s t r e a m t h r o u g h S o u t h P a r k , w e p a s s e d t w o b o y s , six a n d s e v e n , f i s h i n g f r o m t h e b a n k . T h e y regarded us w i t h that triple m i x t u r e of w o n d e r , a m u s e m e n t and s c o r n c h i l d r e n t h a t age b e s t o w o n a d u l t s d o i n g S o m e t h i n g I n e x p l i c a b l e , but as we r o w e d back by an h o u r later, the youngest smiled shyly and softly sang, " R o w , r o w , r o w your boat, gently d o w n the s t r e a m . . . " W e p r e d i c t great t h i n g s f o r t h a t c h i l d . H o w e v e r , s o m e o f t h e s h o u t e r s d e s e r v e r e s p e c t , i f o n l y for t h e i r relentlessness a n d persistence. There's o n e , in fact, w h o S t r o k e O a r has d u b b e d K i n g o f t h e C o x s w a i n s . W e ' d b e e n i n v i t e d t o a n o p e n house on Q u e e n A n n e hill, scheduled for the early a f t e r n o o n . Rather than forego o u r m o r n i n g r o w , we decided to go directly f r o m boat to party. This meant w e ' d have to bring our oars, since there's no w a y to lock t h e m in the t r u c k . (By the w a y , the art of w a l k i n g into a p a r t y , h o w e v e r i n f o r m a l , w i t h t w o sets o f 10-foot s p o o n s o n o n e ' s s h o u l d e r r e q u i r e s a d e g r e e of sang-froid I've n e v e r really m a s t e r e d . S o m e t i m e s it's j u s t easier t o i m p l y y o u ' v e j o i n e d s o m e s o r t o f r e l i g i o u s c u l t . ) A n y w a y , after the party we s h o u l d e r e d our oars a n d began the twob l o c k w a l k t o o u r t r u c k . W e h a d n ' t g o n e half t h e d i s t a n c e w h e n w e heard the cheery, beery voice of His Majesty, roaring out the cadence. We scanned the w i n d o w s and balconies of the s u r r o u n d i n g a p a r t m e n t s a n d s u r e e n o u g h , t h e r e h e w a s - r e d s h o r t s , s w e a t s h i r t a n d baseball c a p . w a v i n g a b r o w n b o t t l e i n o n e p l u m p , h a i r y fist a n d genially s h o u t i n g " S t r o k e , s t r o k e , s t r o k e ! " O n l a n d . O n t h e h i g h e s t hill i n S e a t t l e , m i l e s f r o m t h e w a t e r . T o p e o p l e o n l y carrying o a r s . We t h i n k it is a r e c o r d .

T h e g o o d n e w s w a s t h a t o u r passengers were tougher t h a n we had a right to e x p e c t , and h a n d l e d the bodily t o r t u r e w i t h brave smiles. H u g h M o w a t o f V a n c o u v e r d e s e r v e s t h e I r o n M a n A w a r d . H e d r o v e f r o m his h o m e t o S e a t t l e , t o o k t h e 2 8 0 - m i l e r o u n d - t r i p b u s ride t o A s t o r i a , a n d r e t u r n e d h o m e t h e same night. T h e d i s p l a y s o f m a n y o f t h e b o a t s a n d e q u i p m e n t are easy t o k n o c k . T h e y s t a n d a s m o n u m e n t s t o c o n s p i c u o u s c o n s u m p t i o n . H o w else c a n o n e r e g a r d a d a z z l i n g m i d n i g h t b l u e , m e t a l - f l a k e d , v i n y l - u p h o l s t e r e d , t w o - p l a c e , 5 0 - k n o t r u n a b o u t f o r $ 1 0 , 0 0 0 , o r a $1,000 marine head w h o s e claim to fame is that it goes " s w i s h " rather than "gurgle?" H e h a d j u s t s o l d his highschool-built Snipe sloop to begin a savings nest egg, a n d w a s in the t h r o e s o f b o a t - w i t h d r a w a l pains.
