LOOKING A H E A D . . . L e t ' s i m a g i n e that t h e C W B has finally p u t its act t o g e t h e r . W e w o u l d h a v e a g r a n d f l e e t o f display boats representing the total s p e c t r u m of o u r s m a l l craft h e r i t a g e . T h e c r y s t a l ball also sees our boatshop skills program running year-round: evenings, w e e k e n d s a n d longer-term intensive boatbuilding w o r k s h o p s . W o u l d that be o u r whole bag of tricks? Hardly. T h e m o r e w e get i n v o l v e d w i t h t h e little b o a t s o f our past, the m o r e closed d o o r s a n d d a r k passages w e f i n d , yet t o b e o p e n e d a n d e x p l o r e d . T h e r e i s s o m u c h m o r e i n f o r m a t i o n t o collect a n d pass o n t h a n just t h e o l d b o a t s a n d o l d - t i m e skills. T h e b o o k s h a v e n ' t yet b e e n c l o s e d o n t h e origins, c o n s t r u c t i o n techniques, handling metho d s a n d passages o f the m a n y s m a l l b o a t s t h a t s p r a n g up in the Puget S o u n d area. T h e n there are tangled stories to unravel about the wonderfully talented builders of the N o r t h w e s t : A c m e M a n s k e r , G e o r g e N e u s s , the T a y l o r f a m i l y , the G r a n d y f a m i l y . O l d t i m e r s w e o n l y k n o w a s " B i g E d " a n d " I v a r , " w h o left b e h i n d

f l o a t i n g m o n u m e n t s . J i m C h a m b e r s has t o b e r e c o r d e d - the m a n w h o s t a r t e d S e a t t l e ' s o l d - l i n e b o a t b u i l d i n g s c h o o l i n 1937. C h a m b e r s w e a n e d quite a few superstar builders into the w o r l d of good w o o d construction. Y e t to be surveyed a n d c h a r t e d are the misty w o r k s of outstanding h o m e - g r o w n designers: H.C. Hanson, Leigh Coolidge, T e d Geary, Ben Seaborn and Ed Monk. T h e s t o r i e s o f t h e g o o d small c r a f t a r e a tangled, dense thicket of i n f o r m a t i o n on designs, c o n s t r u c t i o n m a t e r i a l s , tools a n d especially t h e ingenious, energetic, colorful characters w h o d r e w t h e m , built t h e m a n d u s e d t h e m . It's a t o u g h tale t o tell. It's a b o u t a s h a r d t o d e c i p h e r a n d classify a s , say, t h e c o m p l e x , i n t e r l o c k i n g w o r k ing w a t e r f r o n t o f P u g e t S o u n d t o d a y . W e m u s t get m o s t o f t h e a n s w e r s t o o u r questions about N o r t h w e s t historic boats f r o m t h e o n e s w h o still r e m e m b e r . T h e t r o u b l e is, t h e s e a r e t h e f o l k s w h o a r e just t o o b u s y right n o w building boats, replacing d e c k s , stems, keels, t r a n s o m s , s p a r s . W e c a n hear t h e s h a r p r i n g o f caulking along our waterfront from Olympia to Bellingham. T o d a y , h u n d r e d s of skilled professional h a n d s a r e t e n d i n g t o t h e o n g o i n g m a i n t e n a n c e o f classic w o o d t u g s , h a l i b u t s c h o o n e r s , t r o l l e r s , g i l l n e t t e r s , seiners, c a n n e r y t e n d e r s , r e s e a r c h vessels, m i n e s w e e p e r s a n d c h a r t e r

vessels, n o t t o m e n t i o n t h e l a r g e Puget S o u n d fleet o f w o o d p l e a s u r e c r a f t . W h i l e w e n e e d t h e s e p e o p l e t o tell u s m o r e a b o u t o u r h e r i t a g e , they a r e b u s y c o n t i n u i n g it. It's easy for u s t o t a k e t h i s f o r g r a n t e d , b u t t h e y don't in the p o r t of G a l v e s t o n . It was necessary to b r i n g i n o u t s i d e h e l p t o r e s t o r e t h e h i s t o r i c squarer i g g e r Elissa. N o n e o f t h e e x p e r t s w e r e t h e r e t o p l a n k , c a u l k , r i g o r m a k e t r a d i t i o n a l sails. Same thing in San Francisco. T h e new masts for t h e s c o w s c h o o n e r Alma lie in w r a p p i n g p a p e r on the pier, w a i t i n g to be s t e p p e d . T h e y can't do it because there are no riggers in t o w n to m a k e t r a d i t i o n a l w i r e r o p e splices for t h e s h r o u d s a n d stays. W h a t w e h a v e i n Puget S o u n d i s a g o l d m i n e o f m a r i t i m e h i s t o r y , a n d i t has c a l l o u s e d h a n d s a n d spits s n o o s e . T o d a y , P u g e t S o u n d i s still d e e p i n fresh sawdust a n d shavings. S o m e d a y the waterf r o n t will b e g e n t r i f i e d b o u t i q u e s a n d r e s t a u r a n t s . B y t h e n , t h e C W B will b e a full-service m u s e u m , with archives of p h o t o s , d r a w i n g s , b o o k s , magazines, o r a l h i s t o r y tapes a n d p a r a p h e r n a l i a r e l a t e d t o o u r s m a l l - c r a f t h e r i t a g e . C W B will h a v e industrial-sized files a n d c a t a l o g s . B u t o n e t h i n g that will n e v e r c h a n g e i s o u r s o l i d base o f p u b l i c p a r t i c i p a t i o n a c t i v i t i e s . W e will a l w a y s reflect t h e h o n e s t , w o r k - e a r n e d Puget S o u n d s t y l e , w h e r e p e o p l e c a n lay t h e i r h a n d s o n h i s t o r y . —

A p r i l 28, t h e C e n t e r for W o o d e n B o a t s will h o l d its " o p e n i n g d a y " r e g a t t a - first m a j o r o u t d o o r gathering of the new year. T h e W a t e r w a y 4 event w i l l , as u s u a l , be a g r e a t o p p o r t u n i t y t o e x c h a n g e ideas a n d e x p e r i e n c e s , try o u t a v a r i e t y of t r a d i t i o n a l s m a l l b o a t s , a n d engage in a bit o f f r i e n d l y c o m p e t i t i o n . A p o t l u c k l u n c h is s c h e d u l e d f o r 1:30. Sailing r a c e s will be at 4 p . m . I n - b e t w e e n , t h e r e will b e a m p l e t i m e t o t e s t - d r i v e t h e b o a t s a n d have m o r e races. There's some competition here, too - a seafood c h o w d e r c o n t e s t . T h e c o v e t e d C W B c h e f ' s hat will b e a w a r d e d t o t h e c r e a t o r o f t h e best c h o w d e r . . . with the winner to be d e t e r m i n e d by popular acclaim. For those not c o m p e t i n g we need main c o u r s e s , salads, b r e a d s , d e s s e r t s a n d b e v e r a g e s . T h e r a c e s will b e o r g a n i z e d t o p r o v i d e m a t c h u p s for a w i d e v a r i e t y o f b o a t s . The Simon Watts Workshop: O V E R C O M I N G IRRATIONAL FEARS O F O V E R L A P P I N G PLANKS... Story and photos by Marty Loken T h e r e i s o n e little p r o b l e m , t h e i n s t r u c t o r cautioned, w h e n seven untested amateurs try to b u i l d a fine little l a p s t r a k e boat in six d a y s , w i t h a p u b l i c l a u n c h i n g c e r e m o n y a n n o u n c e d for t h e seventh. O u r leader raised a s a w d u s t y e y e b r o w : " Y o u will l e a r n t o c u t a n d fit y o u r first p l a n k s o n underwater s e c t i o n s o f t h e b o a t . B y t h e t i m e y o u reach the sheer strake y o u may k n o w h o w to produce a watertight seam." S o m e of us s h u d d e r e d at t h e t h o u g h t of a p u b l i c sinking on the seventh day, but we feigned bravery a n d plunged into the task of nailing t o g e t h e r o u r first-ever boat. We were part of the C W B ' s intensive lapstrake boatbuilding w o r k s h o p , guided by the visiting evangelist o f c l i n k e r c o n s t r u c t i o n , S i m o n W a t t s . S i m o n was not b o r n in a lapstrake boat, but he c a m e close. Raised along the shore of C o r n w a l l , E n g l a n d , he q u i c k l y b e c a m e familiar w i t h the famous Cornish Gigs, masterful examples of c l i n k e r d e s i g n . A f t e r s t i n t s i n civil e n g i n e e r i n g and architecture, he turned to furniture making for 2 0 y e a r s i n this c o u n t r y , b e c o m i n g a c o n t r i b u t i n g e d i t o r of Fine Woodworking a n d w r i t i n g a popular b o o k on the subject. He's been building c l i n k e r b o a t s f o r the past d e c a d e a n d r e c e n t l y has b e e n o f f e r i n g w o r k s h o p s t o h e l p d e - m y s t i f y lapstrake construction. While in Seattle, Simon put together t w o s e s s i o n s , r e s u l t i n g i n t w o a d d i t i o n s t o the C W B fleet - s h a p e l y 10-foot p r a m s b a s e d on a 1920's design by L. Francis Herreshoff. T h e students were varied in backgrounds and w o o d w o r k i n g abilities ( o u r g r o u p i n c l u d e d a s c h o o l t e a c h e r , retired architect, paramedic and photographer), but all s e e m e d t o h a v e a c o m m o n goal - t o b u i l d confidence for their o w n lapstrake project. S i m o n was model instructor. H e ' d explain most things once a n d perhaps demonstrate a few s h o r t - c u t s , but o t h e r w i s e a l l o w e d ( o r f o r c e d ) u s to move ahead on our o w n . . . making mistakes, p e r h a p s , b u t l e a r n i n g q u i c k l y i n t h e best h a n d s - o n tradition. S i m o n follows the c r e d o that too m u c h i n s t r u c t i o n g e t s i n t h e w a y o f l e a r n i n g , a n d his a p p r o a c h s e e m e d t o b e just r i g h t . G o i n g t h r o u g h 789 b o a t b u i l d i n g s t e p s i n o n e short w e e k , and ending up with a finished boat of all t h i n g s - is a n i c e w a y to b o o s t c o n f i d e n c e . S o m e o f u s m i g h t h a v e u n d e r s t o o d t h e basics o f m o l d s e t - u p b e f o r e t h e class b e g a n , b u t s e c r e t l y d r e a d e d t h e d a y w e ' d h a v e t o c u t a n d fit o u r first plank. O t h e r s m a y have tried planking, but never had to b e n d a hot oak timber into a boat. Most of us had read a n d re-read books on lapstrake c o n s t r u c t i o n , b u t r e a d i n g falls light y e a r s s h o r t of doing. W i t h Simon's help, we taught each other, learned to w o r k as a team, discovered h o w t o l a u g h off n o r m a l l y h u m i l i a t i n g e r r o r s , a n d g o t t h e j o b d o n e . T h e w o r k s h o p really w o r k e d ! S i m o n hopes to c o m e back next year for a n o t h e r s e r i e s , a n d I'd p e r s o n a l l y r e c o m m e n d s i g n i n g u p . (This exercise was not recommended to others... we didn't venture far from the dock with 3 inches of freeboard!) •

So I w e n t to l o o k at this final part o f t h e r i v e r . B e h i n d t h e d r i v e - i n t h e r e is a b e n d in t h e r i v e r a n d h e r e is w h e r e G r e e n River c o m e s to an e n d a n d the saltwater of t h e D u w a m i s h W a t e r w a y begins. A t h i g h t i d e a n d m o d e r a t e r i v e r levels, Puget S o u n d b a c k s u p i n t o t h e G r e e n R i v e r a n d this c o r n e r is just a p l a c i d b e n d in t h e river. B u t d e c e p t i o n lies h e r e , f o r w h e n t h e tide goes o u t , a r o c k y c h u t e i s r e v e a l e d . O u t f r o m e a c h s h o r e j u t s a large r o c k m a s s a n d t h e w a t e r s r u s h d o w n this r o c k y s t a i r c a s e to b e g i n a n e w saline life. Boatbuilder's Notebook T H E BIRTH OF A NEW B O A T DESIGN... B y Eric H v a l s o e On a b l u s t e r y J u n e d a y in 1982, half a d o z e n people c o n v e n e d on a sandbar facing the belching industrial stacks of C o m m e n c e m e n t Bay. Eventually the s u n b r o k e t h r o u g h s c u d d i n g rain c l o u d s . I n t h e m i d s t o f b a t t e r e d steel h u l k s a n d foreign m e r c h a n t m e n , of dilapidated warehouses w i t h faded c o m p a n y names, a very pretty creature d a n c e d on the water. I had launched my first b o a t . T h r e e y e a r s earlier I a r r i v e d i n T a c o m a a n d t h e boatbuilding p r o g r a m of L . H . Bates V o c a t i o n a l Technical Institute. Boats had been part of my life g r o w i n g u p i n t h e S e a t t l e a r e a , b u t I h a d n o t t h e faintest idea h o w to d r i v e a nail t h r o u g h a piece o f w o o d . I n a s h o r t t i m e w o o d , a n d a n e w nomenclature about boats crept under my skin. D u r i n g m y last y e a r a t B a t e s , 1 9 8 1 , I m e t G e r r y B r o w n , a tugboat skipper based out of Seattle. He w a s l o o k i n g for a small b o a t . I o f f e r e d to " d r a w some lines." T h e suggestion blossomed into an obsession, m a r k e d along the w a y by that blustery June launch on C o m m e n c e m e n t Bay. G e r r y w a n t e d w h a t I c h a r a c t e r i z e d a s " a skiff o f traditional character a n d c o n s t r u c t i o n for oar a n d

sail." W h e r r y , W h i t e h a l l . . . none of had particular appeal. G e r r y had w h a t h e vaguely saw i n his o w n o v e r h a n g s , shapely t r a n s o m , a ' b i g ' in a s h o r t l e n g t h .

W e w e r e s e a r c h i n g f o r t h e great c o m p r o m i s e , the H o l y G r a i l of traditional small craft design, a boat that w o u l d sail a n d r o w w e l l i n t h e a b s u r d l y short waterline length of feet. F r o m t h o s e first s k e t c h e s I d r e w a b o a t w i t h graceful overhangs a n d sheer, a n d a deep skeg for directional stability. S h e w a s given an ample b e a m of 4 1/2 feet to c a r r y sail, a n d a half b r e a d t h s h e e r that I c o u l d live w i t h w h e n i t c a m e t i m e t o p l a n k . T h e first set o f lines w e r e n e a r l y f a i r e d w h e n a n e i g h b o r c a s u a l l y r e m a r k e d that she l o o k e d v e r y tender.

W i t h t h e t h i r d a n d final set o f lines f o r w h a t I w o u l d call t h e V a l s o 13, h e e l e d waterlines w e r e used to develop the after p o r t i o n o f t h e h u l l . B u o y a n c y w a s r e t a i n e d t o c a r r y sail a n d c h a n g e o f hull s y m m e t r y m i n i m i z e d t o c r e a t e a w e l l b a l a n c e d m o d e l u n d e r all c o n d i t i o n s . T h e s e changes p r o d u c e d a heart shaped t r a n s o m w i t h a h i g h , soft bilge a n d g e n t l e r e v e r s e .
