L A K E UNION W O O D E N B O A T FESTIVAL More than 100 wooden v e s s e l s o f a l l s i z e s , from rowing d i n g h i e s t o the 100-foot h i s t o r i c t u g A r t h u r F o s s , w i l l rendezvous d u r i n g the N i n t h Annual Lake Union Wooden Boat F e s t i v a l . Once a g a i n , t h i s g a t h e r i n g w i l l be sponsored by The Center f o r Wooden B o a t s . Once a g a i n , i t ' s f r e e . The show w i l l be open 10 a.m.-6 p.m., J u l y 5, 6 and 7 a t the CWB and a d j o i n i n g N a v a l Reserve Center at the s o u t h end of Lake Union. ( J u s t o f f V a l l e y S t r e e t . ) T h i s f e s t i v a l has t h e spontaneous f l a i r of a s t r e e t f a i r . There w i l l be d e m o n s t r a t i o n s o f boatshop s k i l l s , i n c l u d i n g k n o t t y i n g , steam b e n d i n g , oarmaking and c a r v i n g . P o s s i b l y t h e most e n t e r t a i n i n g s p e c t a t o r event i s a b o a t - b u i l d i n g c o n t e s t i n which s i x teams of c o n t e s t a n t s w i l l b u i l d b o a t s o f t h e i r own d e s i g n and r a c e them. The combined l o w e s t t i m e — b u i l d i n g and r a c i n g — w i n s the Lake Union C h a l l e n g e Cup. A t o y b o a t b u i l d i n g workshop, f o r k i d s o f a l l ages, awards p r i z e s d a i l y . There's a n a u c t i o n o f m a r i t i m e gear and o t h e r g o o d i e s . Music w i l l p r o v i d e e n t e r t a i n m e n t . F i l m s and t a l k s w i l l add maritime h e r i t a g e i n f o r m a t i o n . There w i l l be a drawing f o r a c l a s s i c wooden boat. Boats o n d i s p l a y w i l l i n c l u d e r e s t o r a t i o n s and r e p l i c a s o f t r a d i t i o n a l d e s i g n s , as w e l l as some new-dimension c r e a t i o n s . Many boats o f f e r on-board i n s p e c t i o n s and some o f f e r f r e e r i d e s . V i s i t o r s w i l l bo a b l e t o watch and o f t e n p a r t i c i p a t e i n b o a t s k i l l a c t i v i t i e s . I t w i l l be a g r e a t event f o r camera b u f f s , and a l l can c a r e s s t h a t t i m e - t e s t e d , renewable-resource b o a t - c o n s t r u c t i o n m a t e r i a l : wood.
Driving Directions The Lake Union Wooden Boat F e s t i v a l w i l l be h e l d a t t h e CWB s i t e and the a d j a c e n t Naval Reserve C e n t e r . Our f l o a t i n g boatshop i s moored in Waterway 4, at the s o u t h end of Lake Union next to the schooner Wawona. Take t h e I n t e r s t a t e 5 E x i t 167 (Mercer o f f - r a m p ) , go n o r t h on F a i r v i e w Avenue one b l o c k and t u r n l e f t a t the f i r s t l i g h t . Proceed about h a l f a b l o c k t o 1010 V a l l e y S t r e e t , o n the r i g h t s i d e o f the s t r e e t . The N a v a l Reserve C e n t e r (main e n t r a n c e t o t h e f e s t i v a l ) is j u s t beyond the CWB on V a l l e y S t r e e t , and i n c l u d e s a l a r g e p a r k i n g lot.
