S T A T U S O F T H E DIVERSE PROJECTS UNDERWAY A g r a v e y a r d of rotten boats? T h i s might be o n e ' s first i m p r e s s i o n o f T h e C e n t e r . S o m e p e o p l e l i k e it. W e c a l l o u r s e l v e s a " w o r k i n g m u s e u m " o n the b u s y s h o r e s o f a w o r k i n g p o r t . We never said we w o u l d build a marble shrine of m a r i t i m e art o b j e c t s . O u t i n o u r front y a r d a n d tied t o o u r floats a n d o n the d e c k s y o u see a lot o f i n - p r o g r e s s p r o j e c t s o r j o b s a w a i t i n g t h e g r e e n light. E v e r y d a y finds from one to a dozen or so volunteers working on s o m e p a r t o f o u r facilities - s h i n g l i n g t h e n e w o a r h o u s e , v a r n i s h i n g a boat, pulling weeds, t i n k e r i n g w i t h a n e n g i n e , o r s c r a m b l i n g a m o n g the g a r g a n t u a n p o s t s a n d b e a m s o f the p a v i l i o n .

T h e r e n t a l fleet h a s first p r i o r i t y . T h e y a r e o u r most u s e d a n d useful e d u c a t i o n a l a n d p u b l i c relations tools. After all, we p r o m o t e ourselves as a m u s e u m that e n c o u r a g e s g u e s t s t o play w i t h t h e exhibits. A l l other projects take their t u r n , as they fit i n t o t h e y e a r s ' o b j e c t i v e s , w h i c h t r a n s l a t e s i n t o b u d g e t . I m p r o v e m e n t s i n o u r site a r e p a r t o f t h i s years' objectives. T h e pavilion grows in spurts, depending on the c l a s s r o o m schedules of the Seattle C o m m u n i t y College students w h o are b u i l d i n g it. T h i s s p r i n g t h e w e l d i n g s c h o o l f i n i s h e d all t h e b r a c k e t s a n d p l a t e s . T h e c a r p e n t r y s c h o o l has been assembling a n d placing the posts a n d trusses. T h e timbers have been precision cut at t h e s c h o o l . T h i s i s n o t t h e feather-light s u m m e r shelter we originally envisioned, held together with delicate w o o d to w o o d joints. S e a t t l e ' s B u i l d i n g D e p a r t m e n t gave u s the p a r a m e t e r s that c r e a t e d this b o l t - b r i s t i n g h e a v y w e i g h t structure. " B u i l d it to withstand 90 knot winds," they said. T h e day we have 90 knot winds, o u r p a v i l i o n w i l l b e t h e o n l y s t r u c t u r e left s t a n d i n g o n o u r l a k e , a s s u m i n g the l a k e isn't b l o w n a w a y . T h e s e a t i n g b e n c h e s a r e a pile o f c l e a r v e r t i c a l grain lumber in S . C . C . ' s boatbuilding s c h o o l w a i t i n g for t h e s c h o o l t o f i n i s h s o m e o f t h e i r


p r o j e c t s . S o the p a v i l i o n i s still u n d e r w a y , e v e n w h e n y o u d o n ' t s e e v i s i b l e p r o g r e s s o n the site. W e s h o u l d b e e n j o y i n g t h e r e s u l t b y this fall. The urban improvement club, " C i v i t a n " E m e r a l d C i t y chapter, has a d o p t e d o u r lands c a p i n g as their project. M o n e y , labor a n d m a t e r i a l s a r e b e i n g r a i s e d for o u r p a r k . C i v i t a n has t h e l a w n r e a d y t o p u t i n , a s s o o n a s t h e pavilion is c o m p l e t e d . T h e y are scouting a r o u n d for e n o u g h u n i f o r m - s i z e t r e e s t o p l a n t i n t h e d i t c h of topsoil w h i c h we have already inlayed a c r o s s o u r u p l a n d o f s t e r i l e fill a n d a s p h a l t t o p p i n g . T h i s g r e e n fence w i l l m a k e t h e i n t e r s e c t i o n o f o u r p a r k i n g lot a t r a n q u i l p l a c e . T h e t r e e s a n d p l a n t s on the steep b a n k w h i c h forms o u r s h o r e edge s h o u l d be in before winter. T h e r o l l i n g hills a n d d e e p p o o l s o f r a i n w a t e r o f o u r p a r k i n g lot w i l l b e t a i l o r e d t o a s m o o t h , w e l l d r a i n e d surface as a d o n a t i o n of our neighbors, H . C . H e n r y Pier. T h e paving a n d drainage permit was recently received. We can soon look back on o u r fatigued car springs a n d shot s h o c k abs o r b e r s a s a n a m u s i n g i n c i d e n t i n the e a r l y y e a r s o f C W B development. W h a t i s that c u t e little g u a r d h o u s e s t r u c t u r e o n the float? O u r O a r H o u s e , t h e h u b o f o u r rental operation. N o m o r e tip-toeing t h r o u g h a n i n t e n s e w o r k s h o p t o get s o m e o a r s a n d life jackets. Since November when J i m B u c k l i n v o l u n t e e r e d a w e e k e n d a n d f r a m e d it, p r o g r e s s has been as slow as m a k i n g an appointment to have your w i s d o m teeth pulled. B u t , as I write, t h e b u i l d i n g i s all s h i n g l e d a n d o p e n e d for business, lacking only corner trim a n d copper roof c a p a n d w i n d vane, both p r o m i s e d . T h e w i n d v a n e ? A n o a r , o f c o u r s e . T h i s tiny (49 s q u a r e foot) s t r u c t u r e i s i m p o r t a n t for m o r e t h a n t h e o b v i o u s reason, museum operation. O u r State Departm e n t o f R e v e n u e s a y s that b u i l d i n g s o w n e d b y I R S n o n - p r o f i t o r g a n i z a t i o n s a n d u s e d for e d u c a tion or m u s e u m p u r p o s e s are tax e x e m p t . In the c a s e of o u r b o a t s h o p , they insisted it w a s not e x e m p t b e c a u s e w e u s e d p a r t o f t h e b u i l d i n g for the b o a t r e n t a l o p e r a t i o n , w h i c h t h e y j u d g e d t o be neither a m u s e u m nor educational operation. H a v i n g o u r O a r H o u s e , w e are finally a b l e t o c l a i m the B o a t s h o p a s a tax e x e m p t e d u c a t i o n a l building.

T h e C o n c o r d i a S l o o p B o a t "Reliance" ( o u r s e c o n d - t h e o t h e r is t h e "Kin") w a s r e c e i v e d t h i s M a y from D r . and M r s . D a v i d Kelley. She also was put aside o n o u r n o r t h d e c k d u e t o the boat s h o w r u s h a n d t h e 15' l a p s t a k e w o r k s h o p w h i c h f o l l o w e d the s h o w . T h i s s u m m e r w i l l s e e h e r get a complete refinishing. O u r 1935 1 2 1 / 2 ' R e i n e l l r e c e i v e d s o m e n e w f r a m e s a n d p l a n k s this M a y a n d s o m e r e f i n i s h i n g . It is close to restored c o n d i t i o n a n d s h o u l d be b a c k i n t h e w o r k i n g fleet b y late s u m m e r . T o d a y w e a r e n o t a s h o w c a s e o f glitz a n d glitter b o a t s . I n fact, w e n e v e r w i l l b e , a s l o n g a s o u r passion is passing on history through direct e x p e r i e n c e . 15' V A L S O W O R K S H O P COMPLETED B u i l d i n g a b o a t in a b o a t m u s e u m isn't n e w . M y s t i c Seaport was doing it before we started. The Boston M u s e u m of Transportation used to have a boatbuilding p r o g r a m before C W B h a d a shop. W h a t makes our program unique is when the w o r k s h o p s are in progress, they take up the whole m u s e u m . W h e n visitors c a m e through the d o o r f r o m J u l y 15-27, t h e y s t e p p e d i n t o a boatbuilding shop. Often visitors became students, peering over shoulders while the class h u n g a plank, or listening to the instructor, E r i c H v a l s o e , as he g a v e a c h a l k talk o n t h e n e x t s t e p . Teaching boatbuilding in two weeks a n d ending the session with a c o m p l e t e d boat is an except i o n a l e x p e r i e n c e for b o t h s t u d e n t s a n d t e a c h e r . S t u d e n t s went t h r o u g h a cycle of eagerness, confusion, panic and, gradually, confidence. T h e t e a c h e r ' s m o o d s e v o l v e d f r o m " I ' l l d o this highly-complex operation a n d you w a t c h " to patient e x p l a n a t i o n s followed by s t a n d i n g at student e l b o w s while they put it into p r a c t i c e , e n d i n g w i t h , "let these guys h a v e the big picture

T h e L y m a n i s a l m o s t c o m p l e t e d , b u t the last few h a r d w a r e d e t a i l s w e r e d e f e r r e d till the s m o k e cleared f r o m the boat s h o w . T h e W h i t e b e a r Skiff a n d B l a n c h a r d J r . have both been funded through donations and are w a i t i n g for t h e b u i l d e r a n d r e f i n i s h e r t o f i n d a n o p e n t i m e . T. S. Eliot k n e w what he was talking about w h e n he wrote, " B e t w e e n the idea a n d the reality, falls t h e S h a d o w . " A d e v i l t h e r e is t h a t s t o p s h u m a n beings s o m e small distance short of perfection. A historian can cite examples from the H o l y R o m a n E m p i r e t o t h e F r e n c h R e v o l u t i o n and the Reign of T e r r o r . A s k a n y o n e w h o ' s redecorated a house. Or tried to m a k e a c u p of cappuccino. B e i n g a w o o d e n b o a t p e r s o n , I see this m a n i f e s t a t i o n o f the h u m a n c o n d i t i o n i n t h e s e a r c h for t h e p e r f e c t t r a d i t i o n a l b o a t . I h a s t e n to p o i n t o u t that h a v i n g a w o o d e n b o a t is not n e c e s s a r i l y t h e m a r k of a t r a d i t i o n - m a v e n . S t o k e O a r , for e x a m p l e , c a n tie a p a i n t e r f u l o f g r a n n y k n o t s w i t h o u t the t r a c e o f a b l u s h . S h e is a R o w e r , n o t a m e m b e r of the T r a d i t i o n a l W o o d e n B o a t R e v i v a l . S o m e p e o p l e s t a r t following the t h o r n y way to traditional purity but d r o p by the roadside w h e n sanity sets i n . T a k e O'Rourke as an example. The tradition-worm started chewing on O ' R o u r k e w h e n he found a near-derelict cutter b e a c h e d in a V a n c o u v e r Island cove. H o w e v e r , it w a s far t o o e x p e n s i v e for a m a n w i t h a m o r t g a g e , a wife, a n d a s o n in c o l l e g e . It w a s t h e n O ' R o u r k e h a d w h a t h e t e r m e d later, " a w e e bit o ' m e a u l d Irish l u c k . " H i s h o u s e b u r n e d t o the g r o u n d f o r e s t a l l i n g f u r t h e r p a y m e n t s , his wife r a n off w i t h a 2 3 - y e a r - o l d r o c k m u s i c i a n , a n d his s o n j o i n e d the M o o n i e s . T h e cutter was his. O ' R o u r k e threw himself headlong into his project. T h e hull w a s m a d e s o u n d , a new mast s t e p p e d a n d all t h e w i r e r i g g i n g r e p l a c e d w i t h cordage. T h e auxiliary was lovingly r e m o v e d a n d converted into a very serviceable m o o r i n g anchor. Whenever anyone asked him what kind of engine he w a s p l a n n i n g to replace the o l d o n e w i t h , O ' R o u r k e w o u l d just l o o k a t t h e m for a l o n g , long time, then abruptly turn a n d walk away. E v e r y t h i n g that s h o u l d be p a i n t e d , s e r v e d over, tarred slushed, covered with coachwhipping, polished, varnished, decorated with T u r k ' s H e a d s , c a r v e d , or fastened with an antique brass snaphook, was. Finally w o r d c a m e s o u t h to S e a t t l e : " S p i r i t o f C h u c h l a i n " (for t h a t ' s w h a t O ' R o u r k e r e n a m e d her) w a s o p e n t o visitors. Bring strong drink. S h e w a s a b e a u t i f u l s i g h t , fire-new a n d s i t t i n g i n her w a v e r i n g r e f l e c t i o n a s w a v e l e t s r i p p l e d the s u r f a c e o f the little c o v e . W h e n w e h a d s e t t l e d i n t o t h e s m a l l galley a n d adjusted our voices with clear liquids, I w o r k e d u p e n o u g h c o u r a g e t o a s k a b o u t his s h o r e b o a t . I d i d it carefully, tactfully, like y o u a s k an o l d friend h o w h e lost his m i n d . " A h , well," he said with a shamefaced grin i n t o his B u s h m i l l s , " y e h a v e n o i d e a h o w m u c h w a r k a b o a t l i k e t h i s t a k e s . L a r s e n w a s the s o n o f a s o n o f a s a i l o r a n d s e a - w i s e t o his f i n g e r t i p s . A d d i s o n would buy a new H o o d genoa and L a r s e n w o u l d find a c u r r e n t that w o u l d k e e p h i m going when everybody else was b e c a l m e d . Addison would buy a course computer and a s u p e r i o r w i n d vane. L a r s e n w o u l d haul out before e v e r y r a c e , r u b b i n g his h u l l w i t h f i s h o i l a n d s o m e t h i n g his m o t h e r s e n t h i m f r o m S t a v a n g e r . B e f o r e the c r u c i a l r a c e o f a l o n g a n d b i t t e r l y f o u g h t s e a s o n , A d d i s o n h a d a brilliant i f u n s c r u p u l o u s idea. He w o u l d invite L a r s e n to dinner at his s n o o t y u p p e r c l a s s y a c h t c l u b . I m a g i n e Addison's horror when Larsen showed up not in s o m e l o w - r e n t i m i t a t i o n o f a y a c h t s m a n ' s outfit but in foul-weather gear glistening w i t h fish scales. G o n e w a s L a r s e n ' s flat N o r t h w e s t e r n s p e e c h . I n its p l a c e w a s a p i d g i n N o r s e a l m o s t u n i n t e l l i g i b l e o u t s i d e t h e h a l i b u t fleet. W o r s e , w h e n a n embarrassed A d d i s o n was forced to introduce h i m t o the c l u b ' s c o m m o d o r e , L a r s e n s l a p p e d that w o r t h y o n t h e b a c k a n d o f f e r e d h i m a d i p o f Copenhagen. Being declined, Larsen tucked a h u g e p i n c h i n h i s u p p e r lip a n d p r o c e e d e d t o d r i n k t h e c l u b ' s 1812 b r a n d y t h r o u g h it. A w i t n e s s c l a i m s t o h a v e s e e n h i m spit s n o o s e i n t o a p o t t e d p a l m , but I s u s p e c t that my informant was s t r e t c h i n g the facts a bit. A n y w a y , A d d i s o n n e a r l y got b l a c k b a l l e d a n d w a s s o s h a k e n the n e x t d a y that h e l a u n c h e d his s p i n n a k e r u p s i d e d o w n a n d lost to L a r s e n by a full five m i n u t e s , c o r r e c t e d . T h e n L a r s e n a n n o u n c e d he was quitting boat

T h e r e followed a p r o c e s s i o n of p o k y catboats, an ill-advised sailing oyster dredger, a sharpie, a n d a L u b e c carry-away boat. Finally L a r s e n said that he h a d located a boat f r o m the Atlantic c o d f i s h i n g fleet t o r e s t o r e . H e let i t b e k n o w n t h a t h e m i g h t b e i n the c l a s s i c b o a t c o m p e t i t i o n a t V i c t o r i a next year. A d d i s o n s w u n g into h i g h gear. H e r e w a s a c o m p e t i t i o n w h e r e m o n e y w o u l d tell. F a i l i n g t o find out a n y t h i n g about L a r s e n ' s plans, A d d i s o n flew t o N e w E n g l a n d w h e r e h e b o u g h t a 90-foot s c h o o n e r . On the theory that if o n e m a n c a n dig a posthole in 30 seconds, 30 m e n c a n dig one posthole in one s e c o n d , he h i r e d nine master s h i p w r i g h t s , a s s i g n e d e a c h o n e t e n feet o f h u l l a n d gave t h e m an unlimited budget. T h e pine d e c k leaked. It was replaced by oiled teak. H u l l planks were replaced with Douglas Fir so expensive some of us thought it s h o u l d be spelled D o u g l a s F u r . I n t e r i o r t r i m w a s r e p l a c e d b y bright m a h o g a n y . T h e fish h o l d w a s t u r n e d i n t o a g r a n d s a l o o n illuminated by a 24-candle chandelier. T h e master's c a b i n l o o k e d like s o m e t h i n g designed by L o u i s X I V a n d e x e c u t e d by Herreshoff. E x p e n s i v e b r o n z e fittings b e g a n t o s p r o u t o n d e c k s a n d c a p r a i l s like m u s h r o o m s after a r a i n . F l u s h e d with confidence, A d d i s o n was relaxing on his quarterdeck in Victoria's inner harbor w h e n L a r s e n a m b l e d up, grinning. A d d i s o n gave h i m a c o m p l e t e t o u r , p o i n t i n g o u t d e t a i l after d e t a i l .
