T H E G A N G O F FIFTY W e call t h e m the V o l u n t e e r Fleet M a i n t e n a n c e C o r p s ( V F M C ) . T h e y a r e the v o l u n t e e r s w h o s c r a p e , s a n d , p a i n t a n d r e p a i r o u r d i s p l a y fleet. We n o w have over thirty heritage vessels, of w h i c h twenty a r e r o w i n g a n d sailing boats available for the p u b l i c t o play w i t h eight h o u r s p e r day, 362 days per year. T h e s e boats p r o v i d e d 2 , 7 6 8 e n j o y a b l e h o u r s o f u s e i n 1985. T h a t ' s a n average of seventeen days per boat. No w o n d e r we need a repair team. T h e V F M C is our medic u n i t . T h e y r e v i v e a n d h e a l o u r b o a t s — the h e a r t of this living m u s e u m . U p k e e p o f o u r fleet i s a n i m p o s s i b l e t a s k for o u r m i n u s c u l e staff. L a s t y e a r , s i x t e e n o f o u r b o a t s were repaired or refinished. S i x projects were d o n e b y staff, t e n b y V F M C . F o r t y - n i n e v o l u n teers p a r t i c i p a t e d i n fleet m a i n t e n a n c e . M o s t labored in twenty p l a n n e d sessions, but m a n y other restoration minutemen w o r k e d independ e n t o f t h e s c h e d u l e d s e s s i o n s . T h e i r freely d o n a t e d t i m e a n d e x p e r t i s e t o t a l e d 1,122 h o u r s . E x p e r i e n c e d b u i l d e r s s u p e r v i s e d the w o r k parties. T h e y also volunteered. W o r k sessions, usually every other S u n d a y , began with a "job j a r " list o f r e p a i r a n d r e f i n i s h i n g . T h e l e a d e r o r g a n i z e d the j o b s a n d a s s i g n e d t h e c r e w . S o o n e v e r y o n e s e t t l e d i n t o their p r o j e c t . S t o r i e s w e r e t r a d e d , coffee c o n s u m e d , a n d t h e d o n u t s t a s h m u n c h e d . Techniques a n d special tricks were exchanged. Friendships blossomed. A t d a y ' s e n d , C W B w a s left w i t h s o m e b o a t s s t r o n g a n d s h i n y a g a i n . T h e v o l u n t e e r s left w i t h t h e i r b a d g e of h o n o r — s o r e (but firm) m u s c l e s . It's a c a r d i o v a s c u l a r w o r k o u t , l e a r n i n g e x p e r i e n c e , s o c i a l o u t i n g a n d e s c a p e f r o m c l e a n i n g the garage. O t h e r r e w a r d s : free boat u s e a n d v o l u n teer s o c i a l p a r t i e s . T h e w o r k g o e s o n a m i d s t a c o n s t a n t flow o f visitors. Q u e s t i o n s are a s k e d : " W h a t k i n d of boat i s t h i s ? " " W h a t t o o l a r e y o u u s i n g ? " " C a n y o u still get g o o d w o o d ? " T h e v o l u n t e e r s d o u b l e their d u t i e s a n d act a s C W B i n t e r p r e t e r s . Little time c o u l d b e r e s e r v e d for u n f a v o u r a b l e w i n d s a n d r o u g h w a t e r , b u t a t least tidal c u r r e n t s i n that a r e a c o u l d almost be ignored. although covered with barnacles, m a k e conv e n i e n t u n l o a d i n g d o c k s p r o v i d e d that f e n d e r s a r e c a r e f u l l y u s e d . R e a s o n a b l y level s i t e s for the s m a l l , t w o - m a n tent a r e few b e c a u s e the d e n s e b r u s h g r o w s r i g h t d o w n t o the h i g h w a t e r line. S o m e c u t a n d fill w o r k , h e l d u p b y d r i f t w o o d c r i b b i n g , m a d e a n a c c e p t a b l e tent b a s e for the first n i g h t . T h e log b o o m f o r m e d t h e o f f s h o r e a n c h o r for the c l o t h e s l i n e m o o r i n g o f the b o a t . It's a m a z i n g h o w q u i c k l y a 3 0 0 ft. c o i l of Manila c l o t h e s l i n e d i s a p p e a r s w h e n o n e has t o a l l o w for a t i d a l r a n g e of s e v e n t e e n feet. O n t h e n e x t d a y , w e r o w e d d o w n the east s i d e o f B l i n d B a y p a s t a n o y s t e r f a r m a n d a few i s o l a t e d s u m m e r homes. T h e oyster farm appeared as a s m a l l c o v e j a m m e d full o f b u o y s w h i c h w e ass u m e d s u p p o r t e d v e r t i c a l lines o n w h i c h the o y s t e r s w e r e g r o w n . S o m e o f the h o u s e s a r e expensive looking, a n d have locations giving a wide vista of beautiful islands a n d bays. Transportation m u s t be by sea as no roads are s h o w n o n t h e t o p o g r a p h i c m a p o r c a n b e s e e n f r o m the w a t e r . S m a l l fields a d j o i n s o m e o f t h e h o u s e s a n d , a l t h o u g h t h e y a p p e a r e d large e n o u g h t o s u p p o r t a cow, we saw no livestock. After a lunch stop on the r o c k s i n B a l l e t B a y , w e c o n t i n u e d t o p a s s a m o n g s m a l l i s l a n d s , c a r e f u l l y a v o i d i n g reefs a n d s h o a l s that c a r r y n o a i d s t o n a v i g a t i o n . W e left B l i n d B a y a n d e n t e r e d B i l l i n g s B a y for t h e p u r pose of exploring an almost landlocked body of salt w a t e r d e s i g n a t e d o n the c h a r t a s H i d d e n B a s i n . I t w a s n o t t o be. T h e B a s i n w a s d i s c h a r g i n g its c o n t e n t s t h r o u g h w h i t e w a t e r r a p i d s t h a t d r o p p e d a few feet to s e a level. A b a c k e d d y t o o k u s c l o s e t o the n a r r o w e s t part o f the r a p i d s w h e r e progress w a s halted by shallows a n d the converg e n c e o f s h o r e w i t h the w h i t e w a t e r . A slight t u r n p u t o u r b o w i n t o the s t r e a m w h i c h s p u n u s a r o u n d a n d shot us b a c k into Billings B a y at 10 k n o t s . M y n e a r l y full c u p o f t e a o n the t h w a r t b e s i d e m e d i d n o t spill a d r o p . W e t r i e d the r a p i d s o n the o t h e r s i d e o f the tiny d i v i d i n g i s l a n d w i t h s i m i l a r r e s u l t s . P l a n s t o w a l k the b o a t t h r o u g h were s o o n dispelled by thoughts of getting t h o r o u g h l y s o a k e d a n d the difficulties o f r e t u r n i n g w h e n the tide h a d d r o p p e d e v e n f u r t h e r . O n c e a g a i n we m a d e a c i r c u i t of the r a p i d s t h e n left to find a c a m p s i t e on the southeast of H a r d y Island. T h i s l o c a l i t y w a s c h o s e n t o s h o r t e n the final l e g of the trip e n o u g h to allow a g o o d m a r g i n of time to c a t c h t h e ferry at a r e a s o n a b l e h o u r e v e n if t h e expected wind materialized. W e e x a m i n e d s e v e r a l b a y s o n H a r d y I s l a n d b e f o r e f i n d i n g o n e that o f f e r e d a r e a s o n a b l e t e n t s i t e , a safe m o o r a g e , a n d a n a c c e p t a b l e s t o n e d o c k for u n l o a d i n g t h e b o a t . An a b a n d o n e d logging site p r o v i d e d a g o o d locat i o n for the tent. A m a n f r o m the s m a l l e r of t w o s l o o p s t h a t c a m e t o a n c h o r n e a r b y c a m e o v e r for a c h a t after l o o k i n g o v e r the W h i t e b e a r o u t o n its c l o t h e s l i n e m o o r i n g . H e a n d the b o a t ' s o w n e r h a d t r a i l e r e d f r o m K a m l o o p s t o c r u i s e for h i s first t i m e o n salt w a t e r after y e a r s o f f r e s h w a t e r s a i l i n g . T e d w r i g g l e d i n t o h i s wet suit t o h u n t for e d i b l e c r a b s but f o u n d little life on the b o t t o m . It is l i k e l y that it w i l l t a k e m a n y y e a r s t o r e s t o r e the u n d e r w a t e r habitat d e s t r o y e d b y the logging. H o w e v e r , the rapid growth of alders a n d bushes soon recovers the b a r e g r o u n d t o h i d e the d i s c a r d e d c a b l e s a n d other debris. I n the m o r n i n g I w a s u n a b l e t o find the d i s h p a n c o n t a i n i n g a pair o f m u g s a n d w a s h i n g - u p e q u i p ment, w h i c h I w a s sure h a d b e e n put with o t h e r supplies against a vertical r o c k o u t c r o p p i n g . O t h e r i t e m s t u r n e d o u t t o b e wet w h i c h w e first a s s u m e d w a s the result o f s u r f a c e w a t e r s e e p i n g f r o m the f i s s u r e s i n the r o c k . O u r c o n c l u s i o n s h a d t o b e r e v i s e d w h e n o n e o f the s l o o p s ' c o m p a n y r o w e d o v e r t o a s k i f the d i s h p a n a n d its c o n t e n t s b e l o n g e d t o u s . H e h a d f o u n d i t o n the r o c k s a considerable distance from our camp. Nothing had b e e n lost! We were again lucky on another error of j u d g m e n t . I h a d set the 2 0 p o u n d k e d g e w i t h o u t a t r i p line i n a n a r e a l i k e l y t o h a v e b e e n f o u l e d by o l d cables a n d s u n k e n snags. Y o u are correct; a 20 p o u n d a n c h o r is r a t h e r large e v e n if it d o e s give p e a c e o f m i n d for its h o l d i n g p o w e r a n d i n c r e a s e d b o a t s t a b i l i t y . I t fits c o n v e n i e n t l y o n c h o c k s aft w h e r e i t h e l p s t o k e e p o t h e r g e a r a b o v e the bilge w a t e r w h i l e t r i m m i n g t h e b o a t n i c e l y for m y p l a n o f s t o w a g e . A l u n c h s t o p just east o f B a l l P o i n t s h o w e d t h e m a r k e d i n c r e a s e i n m a r i n e life i n a m o r e e x p o s e d e n v i r o n m e n t away from logging activity. A n easy p u l l a c r o s s J e r v i s Inlet g a v e u s p l e n t y o f t i m e for e n j o y i n g a n i c e t e a b r e a k i n the p a r k ' s p i c n i c a r e a before t r a i l e r i n g h o m e . W h i l e w e w e r e v e r y c a r e fully u n l o a d i n g the b o a t w i t h o u t letting it g r o u n d o n the s t o n y b e a c h , w e w a t c h e d i n h o r r o r a s other users of the r a m p dragged their boats o v e r the r o u g h c o n c r e t e a n d d r o p p e d t h e m out of t r u c k s . I guess m a n y people now consider boats, like other plastic containers, to be disposable.

N e l s o n Island a n d vicinity are high on my p r i o r i t y list for f u t u r e t r i p s . It is a v e r y a t t r a c t i v e a r e a r e l a t i v e l y free o f p r i v a t e p r o p e r t y s i g n s , o t h e r c a m p e r s , a n d foreshore garbage, but o n e will likely e x p e n d considerable time finding or building a c a m p s i t e a n d t r a n s f e r r i n g e q u i p m e n t t o o r f r o m the b o a t . T h e boat w i l l m o s t p r o b a b l y h a v e to be m o o r e d out; kayaks a n d canoes may be e x c e p t e d . T h i s w a s o n e o f the few o c c a s i o n s o n w h i c h I have used topographic m a p s as well as m a r i n e c h a r t s . T h e m a p s w e r e useful i n u n f a m i l i a r t e r r i t o r y for p l a n n i n g c a m p i n g sites that a v o i d e d houses, industry, a n d Indian Reservations, w h e r e v i s i t o r s are o f t e n u n w e l c o m e . O n e v e r y c h u n k o f r o c k l a r g e e n o u g h t o h a v e its o w n w a t e r s u p p l y a n d o n a lot of o n e s q u i t e a bit s m a l l e r , N o r w e g i a n s h a v e built s u m m e r h u t s , s i m p l e c a b i n s for quiet r e l a x a t i o n . T o c o m m u t e b a c k a n d f o r t h , t h e y use a snekke, a high-sided, full-bodied, d o u b l e - e n d e d day c r u i s e r with an open cockpit. " A n ideal family b o a t , i n t e n d e d for up to 10 p a s s e n g e r s , a s p e e d of 6 to 8 k n o t s , a n d a lot o f h e a v y u s e . T h e y ' r e built o f p i n e a n d a r e usually p o w e r e d by a low-speed, 10-horse S A A B d i e s e l . " B i o r n has a p h o t o o f the s m a l l b o a t h a r b o r K r a g e r o s h o w i n g 15 to 18 w o o d e n s n e k k e s from 16 to 20 feet, all f i n i s h e d bright a m o n g s o m e 10 plastic versions. Plastic's ability to take c u r v e s that w o u l d t o r t u r e w o o d h a v e r e s u l t e d i n a fat, r o u n d s t e r n l i k e a n o l d claw-foot b a t h t u b a n d a s h a r p e r e n t r y . M i d s h i p s e c t i o n s a r e i d e n t i c a l for 10 of the 16 feet. T h e y i l l u s t r a t e a d e s i g n that h a s sacrificed everything to carrying capacity. Y e t for a l l that u g l i n e s s , t h e y s e e m t o g a i n v e r y little. oak frames, a n d a S p a n i s h mahogany hull, f i n i s h e d b r i g h t . T h e a r t i c l e c o y l y s u g g e s t s that M r . H a c k e r w i l l b e g l a d t o p r o v i d e all the nifty h a r d w a r e s h o w n i n the c o n s t r u c t i o n p l a n s : s t r e a m l i n e d cleats, r u n n i n g lights, engine c o m p a r t m e n t h a n d l e s , air i n t a k e c o w l , e v e n s o c k e t s for t w o flagstaffs. Zipper m u s t h a v e b e e n a r e a l eyecatcher. That's what buyer K e n M u s c a t e l thought. S a d l y , Zipper a n d h e r c o h o r t s w e r e c o m p e t i t i o n b o a t s , l i g h t l y built for the t o r q u e a n d t r e a t m e n t that w a s t h e i r lot. S o K e n a s k e d E r i c t o b u i l d h i m a m o d e r n v e r s i o n . T h e y d e c i d e d that s i n c e S p a n i s h mahogany plank stock was in short supply ( n o b o d y a t B l a c k s t o c k h a d e v e r h e a r d o f it) the bottom would be plywood. C o m m o n knowledge s a y s that p l y w o o d c a n ' t b e b e n t i n t h e c o m p o u n d

s h a p e c a u s e d b y the h o l l o w e n t r y a n d the c u r v e o f the k e e l . K e n h a d l o c a t e d s o m e o l d e r 3/16" m a h o g a n y p l y w o o d m a d e b y the n o w - d e f u n c t C h a m p i o n mill. A c o m b i n a t i o n of m u c h higher p r e s s u r e a n d a possible s u p e r i o r glue gave these t h i n s h e e t s s u r p r i s i n g flexibility. T h e y d e c i d e d t o lay u p the b o t t o m w i t h t h r e e l a y e r s b o n d e d t o g e t h e r b y e p o x y . A f t o f t h e s t e p , the c u r v e i s o n l y o n e w a y ( a slight h o l l o w p a r a l l e l t o t h e keel) a n d 1/2" m o d e r n p l y w o o d w i l l d o . E r i c a d d e d l o n g i t u d i n a l s p r u c e s t r i n g e r s for s u p p o r t , cutting the frames away to a c c o m m o d a t e t h e m . S o far, s o g o o d . T h e n i t c a m e t i m e t o p u t i n the e n g i n e s t r i n g e r s , t w o hefty b o w - t o s t e r n s p r u c e rails that f o r m the b o a t ' s s t r u c t u r a l b a c k b o n e e v e n m o r e t h a n the k e e l . E r i c h a d n e v e r built a p o w e r e d b o a t before. L u c k i l y for E r i c ( a n d K e n ) , the M i s s B u d w e i s e r s h o p i s just a c r o s s the street f r o m V a l s o B o a t s , a n d the c r e w c a m e o v e r w i t h a d v i c e . T h e rails h a d t o b e f u r t h e r apart than the plans s h o w to a c c o m m o d a t e a 225 M e r c r u i s e r K e n w a s s u b s t i t u t i n g for t h e s p e c i f i e d L y c o m i n g . T h e engine will m o u n t o n transverse r a i l s w h i c h r e a c h o u t o n e i t h e r side t o the a c t u a l engine b e d m o u n t s . V e r t i c a l posts will r u n from e n g i n e s t r i n g e r s t o the d e c k f r a m e s , b u i l d i n g a b o x t o h a n d l e the t o r q u e . M i s s B u d ' s c r e w w a s baffled b y E r i c ' s a p p a r e n t lack of fastenings. T h e y figured he was glueing the whole thing together a n d were apprehensive. A c t u a l l y , h e ' d just c o u n t e r s u n k a n d b u n g e d t h e m a n y steel s c r e w s a s s t a n d a r d w o o d e n boatbuilding practice. " H o w are y o u going to retighten t h e m w h e n they w o r k l o o s e , " they a s k e d . M o d e r n h y d r o style is to fasten e v e r y t h i n g w i t h m a c h i n e s c r e w s a n d l o c k n u t s , c i n c h i n g e v e r y t h i n g u p after every race. B e s i d e s the e n g i n e m o u n t i n g , m o d e r n h y d r o t e c h n o l o g y w i l l b e s u b s t i t u t e d for the s t r i n g a n d ; pulley steering s y s t e m . T h e n e w steering will be a hydraulic r a m actuating a quadrant on the r u d d e r . T h i s r e m o v e s a n y tiller " f e e l " b u t i t m e a n s that l o s i n g y o u r g r i p o n the w h e e l i n a t u r n w o n ' t result in a s u d d e n straightening out a n d loss of c o n t r o l . A f t e r a l l , t h i s little 1,800 p o u n d s p e e d s t e r will p r o b a b l y go in e x c e s s of 60 m p h ! " T h e r e a r e c o m p a n i e s l i k e G o l d e n E r a i n the G r e a t L a k e s a n d the M i d w e s t , a l l r e c r e a t i n g t h e

l i m o u s i n e r u n a b o u t s , the t h r e e - c o c k p i t l u x u r y b o a t s , " says o w n e r M u s c a t e l . " E r i c is building a little c l a s s i c M G - T C . I w o u l d n ' t b e a t a l l s u r p r i s e d i f m a n y o t h e r r a c i n g buffs w a n t o n e . "

Earl Doan, Building Simple Elegance "Before the development of w o o d a n d c a n v a s c o n s t r u c t i o n , m o s t r e c r e a t i o n a l c a n o e s w e r e built lapstrake. They were good canoes — strong and l i g h t w e i g h t , w i t h s e a t s o r t h w a r t s for the p a d d l e r s t o sit o n w h i l e p a d d l i n g . B u t it's b e e n a b o u t a hundred years since o p e n canoes were comm o n l y built this w a y a n d a n y o n e w h o w a n t s t o b u i l d o n e w o n ' t f i n d m u c h h e l p i n the w a y o f p l a n s , " says E a r l D o a n proprietor o f Island C a n o e a n d a longtime Shavings advertiser. Earl's c h a n g i n g that. H e ' s d e v e l o p e d the L o o n , a b e a u t i f u l fifteen foot t e n i n c h v a r i a n t o f t h e P e t e r b o r o u g h c a n o e for l a p s t r a k e c o n s t r u c t i o n . " W e wanted to build a big lapstrake. T h e B u t t e r n u t , o u r s e v e n - a n d - a half f o o t e r , h a s the drawback of most C u l l e r a n d S i m m o n s designs: y o u sit o n the b o t t o m a n d d o u b l e p a d d l e w i t h y o u r legs s t r e t c h e d o u t i n front o f y o u . It's n o treat for l o w e r b a c k m u s c l e s o r y o u r h a m s t r i n g s . W e l i k e t o get u p m o r e . W e l i k e t o u s e a s i n g l e paddle," he explained. H e f o u n d a t a t t e r e d a n d s m u d g e d p l a n for a P e t e r b o r o u g h o n t h e w a l l o f the W o o d e n B o a t S h o p . It w a s in s u c h b a d shape, they almost didn't w a n t to s e l l it. "I t o l d t h e m I'd a c c e p t a r e d u c e d p r i c e , " E a r l said with a grin. R e d r a w i n g t h e p l a n s . E a r l c u t the e n d s d o w n b y six inches to r e d u c e windage, an important factor in cross-wind paddling. He also eliminated the t u m b l e h o m e , r e a s o n i n g that it was necessary in the o r i g i n a l s m o o t h - s k i n n e d v e r s i o n for s t r e n g t h . T h e l a p s t r a k e c o n s t r u c t i o n p r o v i d e s fully e n o u g h s t r u c t u r a l r e i n f o r c e m e n t for s u c h a light c r a f t , h e decided. E a r l built L o o n f r o m 1/4" c e d a r , 8 p l a n k s to a s i d e . R i b s a r e 3/8" a s h ; k e e l a n d s t e m s o a k . H e o n c e built a n o a k a n d m a h o g a n y B u t t e r n u t w h i c h e n d e d up weighing a tad m o r e than 55 p o u n d s . C e d a r a n d a s h i n the s a m e c a n o e c u t the w e i g h t to a tad u n d e r 45 p o u n d s , so E a r l c h o o s e s his


woods with care. H i s c u r r e n t L o o n h a s 3/8" floor t i m b e r s s p r u n g d o w n to the keel but unfastened at their ends. E a r l h a d h i g h h o p e s for the L o o n b e c a u s e i t w a s based on a c a n o e with a proven r e c o r d , but he h a d s o m e reservations. L e n g t h is a real factor in c a n o e s p e e d a n d h e w o r r i e d that L o o n , w h i l e not s t u b b y , isn't l o n g e i t h e r . W i t h a r o c k e r e d k e e l h e w o n d e r e d h o w well it w o u l d track.

We asked Earl about "tippyness," something n o n - c a n o e i s t s w o r r y a b o u t . H e r e s p o n d e d that there are two k i n d s of c a n o e s : stable ones a n d s e a w o r t h y o n e s . " S t a b i l i t y d o e s n ' t m a t t e r that m u c h , " h e s a y s . " A n y b o d y c a n b o a t o n flat w a t e r . W h a t we want are seaworthy canoes. T h e y may b e m o r e a c t i v e , b u t t h e y d o n ' t flip y o u o v e r o r s h i p water. Y o u ' r e b u s y , but safe."

O n e s p r i n g d a y i n the n e a r p a s t , a m i d all this h u m a n b u s t l e , a p a i r o f C a n a d i a n g e e s e fell i n love. F l o c k s of these geese c u s t o m a r i l y use L a k e U n i o n a s a rest s t o p , c o m i n g t o a n d f r o m t h e i r arctic nesting grounds. This u n k n o w n couple s t a y e d b e h i n d a n d r a i s e d a family. S o o n a family of g e e s e b e c o m e s a f l o c k , t h e n b e c o m e s a s m a l l n a t i o n . T o d a y w e a r e b l e s s e d w i t h daily s i g h t s o f these h a n d s o m e b i r d s b a n k i n g a n d s w o o p i n g i n V - f o r m a t i o n . O u r s o u t h e n d has b e c o m e t h e i r breeding place a n d territorial capital. T h e s e geese h a v e s u r v i v e d a n d t h r i v e d partly b e c a u s e o f the c a r e a n d p r o t e c t i o n t h e y h a v e r e c e i v e d f r o m t h e c r e w o f the N a v a l R e s e r v e B a s e next d o o r . We all s h o u l d s h a r e the responsibility for t h e c o n t i n u e d h a b i t a t i o n o f t h e s e s e n i o r m e m b e r s o f o u r c o m m u n i t y . S o , p l e a s e see t h a t dogs are under c o n t r o l a r o u n d here, especially d u r i n g n e s t i n g t i m e (spring), a n d r e p o r t a n y o i l spill t o the H a r b o r P o l i c e (625-4312). C W B i s w e d g e d b e t w e e n the g r i d l o c k o f t h e f r e e w a y a c c e s s / e g r e s s a n d the h u b b u b o f b o a t a n d seaplane activity on the lake. S o m e sightings a t C W B , o r o n the lake nearby: W e s t e r n grebe, pie-billed grebe, l o o n , h o o d e d m e r g a n s e r , c o m m o n merganser, killdeer, bittern, blue heron, kingfisher, bufflehead, cormorant, muskrat, beaver a n d sea lion. M a l l a r d s , coots, herring gulls and crows are c o m m o n enough to be considered domestic pets. •
