THE SECRETS OF THE PROTHERO SCHOONER F o r t h e last 2 0 y e a r s , e v e r s i n c e h e f i n i s h e d Alcyone, F r a n k P r o t h e r o has b e e n b u i l d i n g a 65foot w o o d e n s c h o o n e r on a barge near Ivar's S a l m o n H o u s e . O n c e t h e r e w e r e half a s c o r e o f boatbuilders on L a k e U n i o n turning out big w o o d e n b o a t s . T o d a y F r a n k i s t h e o n l y o n e left. H e ' s b u i l d i n g this last b i g o n e b y h i m s e l f , h e l p e d o n l y b y his g r a n d s o n B r i a n , w h o ' s l e a r n i n g t h e boatbuilder's trade. Early in F e b r u a r y , T h e W o o d e n B o a t S h o p a n n o u n c e d t w o small S a t u r day tours of the P r o t h e r o schooner a n d a chance t o m e e t t h e m a s t e r himself. J u s t g e t t i n g to t h e b o a t s h o p is a bit of an adventure. We followed a well-worn but obscure p a t h under a loading pier. F r a n k ' s s t e a m b o x p a r a l l e l s t h e p a t h , a leaky s t r e t c h of p i p i n g w r a p p e d in duct tape running f r o m a steam generator perched on the bank to the under-pier e n d . W h e n it's g e n e r a t i n g , t h e p a t h i s p r o b a b l y lost in the fog. T h e w o r k i n g e n d of the b o x is only a few steps f r o m the s h o p d o o r . T h e s t e a m b o x d o o r has a c o u n t e r w e i g h t e d h a n d l e , o b v i o u s l y carefully p l a n n e d to m a k e it easy for a solo o p e r a t o r . It's o n l y t h e first o f m a n y t o u c h e s t h a t speaks of years of hard-won experience. Visitors enter the s h o p under a balcony that o b s c u r e s all b u t t h e v e r y f o r e f o o t o f t h e s c h o o n e r . F r a n k ' s c h a i r , a 1950 plastic a n d c h r o m e p i e c e o f dentist's waiting r o o m furniture that's seen m a n y better d a y s , is close to the stove in o n e of the shop's rare clear areas. T h e r e ' s a big shipsaw there too, a n d an incredible collection of lumber, 55-gallon d r u m s , rigging s c r e w s , a n d only F r a n k k n o w s w h a t . T h e r e ' s a 26-foot c u t t e r w e d g e d in t h e r e , a beautiful sawn-frame hull that looks a l m o s t r e a d y t o p l a n k . T h e first i m p r e s s i o n i s t h a t of a s m a l l h o u s e i n h a b i t e d by a nonagenarian spinster w i t h ten cats w h o never t h r e w a n y t h i n g a w a y s i n c e she r e a c h e d her m a j o r i t y . T h e o n l y difference is the smell of fresh-cut cedar a n d the fact that e v e r y t h i n g there w o u l d be useful if y o u

wanted to build a boat. W a l k i n g toward the schooner, we saw a scrap of dusty tarp wadded u p o n a p a i r o f steel d r u m s . W h e n w e t u r n e d b a c k a c o r n e r we f o u n d t h a t it c o n c e a l e d a p a i r of gorgeous fashion boards carved w i t h vine leaves i n s u c h h i g h relief t h a t t h e y l o o k a l m o s t a s i f t h e y float a b o v e t h e s u r f a c e . F r a n k ' s w o r k , like e v e r y t h i n g else a r o u n d . T h e minute we stepped from beneath the balcony, we stepped beneath the schooner. In f a c t , g o i n g t o see t h e P r o t h e r o s c h o o n e r i s a m i s s t a t e m e n t . T h e r e isn't m o r e t h a n six feet b e t w e e n t h e hull a n d t h e walls a t a n y p o i n t , s o s e e i n g it, g e t t i n g s o m e idea o f its o v e r a l l s h a p e a n d dimensions, is virtually impossible. Even F r a n k h a s n ' t " s e e n " it. A c c o r d i n g t o o u r g u i d e , J o e B u c e k , the only d r a w i n g that F r a n k m a d e was a p r o f i l e t h a t s h o w s t h e sail p l a n . T h e b o a t w a s designed on the mould-loft floor. On d e c k , the pressing closeness of the building e n l a r g e s t h e s c h o o n e r ' s d i m e n s i o n s t o t h e size o f a G r a n d Banks codfisherman. T h e impression is heightened by the minimal deck structures, a c o m p a n i o n w a y e n t r a n c e f o r w a r d and an eight by s i x t e e n d e c k h o u s e aft. T h e t w o h o u s e s a r e m a d e i n p a n e l a n d f r a m e c o n s t r u c t i o n , m u c h like a c o m m o n i n t e r i o r d o o r but t h e y f o l l o w b o t h t h e s h e e r a n d t h e c a m b e r o f t h e d e c k , s o n o p i e c e has a r i g h t angle i n it. T h e y ' r e r o o f e d w i t h c a n v a s o v e r felt o v e r p l a n k i n g i n t h e o l d t r a d i t i o n a l s t y l e . H o l d i n g d o w n t h e c a n v a s o n t h e edges a r e b e a u t i ful m a h o g a n y c o v e r i n g b o a r d s six i n c h e s b r o a d , a t least t h r e e i n c h e s t h i c k a n d c a r v e d o n t h e e d g e s . T h e c o r n e r s a r e n ' t d o v e t a i l e d b u t fit together w i t h a simple 45° join. J o e found a model o f t h e j o i n t a n d s h o w e d u s h o w e a c h p i e c e has b o t h a m o r t i c e a n d a t e n o n w h i c h fit t o g e t h e r , o n e o v e r the other. It is frankly amazing. Since the c o v e r i n g boards w o u l d trap w a t e r on the cabin roof, the low c o r n e r s have brass scuppers w h i c h F r a n k d e s i g n e d a n d cast himself. T h e deckhouses are coated w i t h dust, but a swipe of the hand s h o w s coats a n d coats of varnish that glow softly in the dimness. We have

W e ' v e n o t i c e d t h a t t h e c o n s t r u c t i o n details o f a t h i r t y - f o o t h u l l a r e n ' t m u c h d i f f e r e n t f r o m t h o s e of a t w e n t y - f o o t h u l l a n d a f o r t y - f i v e f o o t h u l l isn't m u c h d i f f e r e n t f r o m t h e t h i r t y f o o t e r . B u t a r o u n d fifty feet, b o a t b u i l d i n g c h a n g e s its c h a r a c t e r . T h e r e is a q u a l i t a t i v e d i f f e r e n c e b e t w e e n a d e c k k n e e t h e size o f a n u n a b r i d g e d d i c t i o n a r y a n d a d e c k k n e e as b i g as a V o l k s w a g e n f r o n t s e a t . It's this d i f f e r e n c e t h a t a m bushed us everywhere we looked. T h i s s c h o o n e r feels m u c h b e a m i e r a n d d e e p e r t h a n Alcyone a n d it's o b v i o u s that e v e r y t h i n g is b e i n g b u i l t i n t h e o l d s t y l e . T h e hull i s c e d a r o v e r o a k , w i t h a b a n d o f l i g n u m vitae s h e a t h i n g a t t h e w a t e r l i n e . A l l f a s t e n i n g s a r e t r i p l e - d i p p e d galvanized iron, the only bedding c o m p o u n d a m i x t u r e o f w h i t e lead p a s t e a n d r e d lead p o w d e r , a c o m b i n a t i o n s o t o x i c t h a t it's a m a z i n g F r a n k r e a c h e d r e t i r e m e n t age. J o e s a y s that F r a n k i s g o o d f o r a n h o u r l e c t u r e o n t h e evils o f g l u e s i n b o a t b u i l d i n g . W e a s k e d J o e a b o u t the interior a r r a n g e m e n t s , but he said that not e v e n F r a n k k n o w s f o r s u r e h o w t h e y will b e d o n e . H e a d d e d that w h e n y o u ' v e b e e n b u i l d i n g b o a t s a s long as the m a n d o w n there by the stove, y o u c a n afford to make it up as you go along. C l i m b i n g a r o u n d o n t h e s c a f f o l d i n g i s a bit o f a n a d v e n t u r e . It's m a d e o f 2 x 8 ' s , v e r y l o n g o n e s , t a c k e d t o g e t h e r w i t h single nails. If t h e r e ' s a p l a n k in it s u p p o r t e d at any o t h e r place than the ext r e m e e n d s , w e n e v e r f o u n d it. I t ' s a lively sort o f footing at best. C o u n t l e s s trips up a n d d o w n the single s t e p l a d d e r h a v e g i v e n its r u n g s a p a t i n a that rivals the varnish j o b on the deckhouses. T h e idea o f u s i n g i t t o c a r r y a n y o f t h e m a s s i v e p a r t s for the d e c k or d e c k s t r u c t u r e s gives the p r u d e n t extremely sweaty palms. Back on the boatshop floor a n d standing under t h e c o u n t e r , J o e e x p l a i n s a n o t h e r r e a s o n t h a t this i s p r o b a b l y g o i n g t o b e t h e last s c h o o n e r built i n the G r a n d O l d Style. O n c e t h e s e v i t a l s c r a p s o f b i g b o a t g e a r a r e all u s e d u p , a f u t u r e b u i l d e r will h a v e t o t u r n t o o n e t i m e f a b r i c a t i o n a n d w h o will b e able t o a f f o r d that? W h e n w e r e t u r n e d f r o m the s t e r n , F r a n k was r u n n i n g l o n g c e d a r p l a n k s t h r o u g h his b i g s a w , resawing t h e m into planking for the cutter. T h e m o r e y o u l o o k a t its s h a p e , t h e m o r e i t l o o k s like a one-third m o d e l of the schooner. J o e h a d been after F r a n k to design h i m a sailboat for m o r e t h a n t w o y e a r s b u t w h e n T h e M a s t e r p u t his p r i c e o n t h e d e s i g n , J o e said i t w o u l d h a v e t o w a i t until h e s o l d a lot m o r e s h a r p e n i n g s t o n e s a n d t a r r e d marline. F r a n k liked the design a n d t h o u g h t it w o u l d sell, s o h e o f f e r e d t h e k i n d o f a r r a n g e m e n t familiar t o b u i l d e r s o f his e r a . H e w o u l d m a k e three cutters on speculation, spreading the d e s i g n c o s t s b e t w e e n all f o u r . H e w o u l d a l s o m a k e p a r t s for J o e t o a s s e m b l e o u t o n his f a r m . A n d J o e was a s k e d to build it Prothero-style: no glue, n o p l y w o o d , n o m o d e r n sealants o r o t h e r goops. Joe immediately went out a n d bought an undisclosed a m o u n t of iron rod for drift bolts. T h o u g h F r a n k h a s n ' t set a d a t e , J o e says h e

y e a r s . T h e y h a v e b e e n sailed e v e r y m o n t h o f every year. D u r i n g their years of service, they h a v e h a d t h r e e n e w c a n v a s d e c k s , 3 n e w sails, 3 n e w sets of r u n n i n g r i g g i n g . . . a n d lots of p a i n t and varnish. It seemed time to do something nice t o t h e hulls this w i n t e r . A n d y volunteered to diagnose any problems a n d do the necessary surgery, if he had a helper. We asked Kelly to be the D r . W a t s o n to A n d y ' s Sherlock Holmes. De-rigging, scrubbing d o w n and hauling in the s h o p w a s d o n e by Kelly. T h e hull was carefully b l o c k e d a n d b r a c e d t o k e e p its s h a p e . A f t e r r e m o v a l o f t h e c e i l i n g , A n d y d e c i d e d t o r e n e w all the frames a n d floor-timbers. T i m e , fresh water a n d still air h a d t u r n e d s o m e t o s p o n g e - l i k e consistency. T h e boats were watertight but possibly not for m u c h longer. T h e frames are continuous f r o m sheer to sheer, except a b e a m the c e n t e r b o a r d . Beetles h a v e a l o n g f o r e d e c k a n d w i d e side- a n d afterdecks. A n d y was loathe to r e m o v e a g o o d canvas d e c k a n d tear u p g o o d p i n e d e c k - p l a n k s . H i s a e s t h e t i c s e n s e a b s o l u t e l y p r e c l u d e d sisterframes. So the plan was f o r m u l a t e d to replace all o f t h e f r a m e s a n d f l o o r - t i m b e r s , w i t h o u t

t h i n k s t h e s c h o o n e r will b e l a u n c h e d s o m e t i m e this s u m m e r . T h e s h o p f l o o r i s n e e d e d f o r t h e o t h e r t w o c u t t e r s a n d F r a n k still m u s t m a k e t h e r i g g i n g a n d sails f o r t h e s c h o o n e r , p r o j e c t s t h a t need a lot of space as well. A n d he a n d B r i a n must m a k e covers for the schooner's b r i g h t w o r k . T h e r e ' s a lot m o r e t o F r a n k ' s c o n c e p t o f boatbuilding than other people's. " H e has i n c r e d i b l e s e l f - c o n f i d e n c e , " J o e t o l d us later. "I d o n ' t t h i n k there's ever been a n y t h i n g F r a n k n e e d e d that he wasn't able to build for himself. T h e o t h e r d a y his f o r t y - y e a r o l d w a t e r h e a t e r s p r u n g a leak. I f i g u r e d h e ' d g o o u t a n d b u y another one. N o t Frank. Even though he'd never w o r k e d o n a h o t w a t e r t a n k b e f o r e , h e t o o k i t all a p a r t , l o c a t e d t h e p r o b l e m s , d i d a little w e l d i n g h e r e , a little r e p l a c e m e n t t h e r e , a n d for all I k n o w , m a d e i m p r o v e m e n t s . N o w h e has a w a t e r h e a t e r g o o d for a n o t h e r forty years . . . o r m o r e . " " W e l l , he certainly inspires me to try somet h i n g , " said one of our c o m p a n i o n s . O n l y e v e r y t h i r d f r a m e a n d floortimber was r e m o v e d at each framing session, so t h e h u l l w o u l d r e m e m b e r w h a t its s h a p e w a s supposed to be. 3

M e a n w h i l e , the g o o d , green, straight-grained Indiana white oak had been ripped, planed, c h a m f e r e d to the frame dimensions, a n d s o a k e d for a w e e k i n L a k e U n i o n ( a f l o a t i n g s h o p has some advantages). T h e frames were wiped d o w n to remove the algae a n d t h e n p a i n t e d w i t h b o i l e d l i n s e e d o i l just before inserting t h e m in the s t e a m b o x . T h i s i s A n d y ' s i n s u r a n c e t h e f r a m e s will b e n d w i t h o u t b r e a k i n g : t h e o i l h e l p s seal i n t h e m o i s t u r e , e x t e n d i n g the flexibility t i m e of the t i m b e r o n c e out of the s t e a m b o x . N o t a frame b r o k e . A n o t h e r g i m m i c k was c u t t i n g a radius (like s l e d - r u n n e r s ) o n t h e f r a m e s o i t w o u l d slide o v e r the planks, not dig in. D o w n the hot frames w e n t , t h r o u g h t h e d e c k - h o l e s a n d w i t h a little jiggling, up c a m e the butts t h r o u g h the opposite holes. T h e h o l e s w e r e large e n o u g h t o " C " - c l a m p t h e head to the sheer. T h e frames w e r e b r a c e d against the t u r n of the bilge b y m e m b e r s t a c k e d t o a d e c k - b e a m o n t h e opposite side. W h e n all t h e f r a m e s w e r e i n p l a c e a n d f a s t e n e d , the heads w e r e cut flush by inserting a hacksaw b l a d e t h r o u g h t h e s h e e r - d e c k j o i n t . Plugs w e r e epoxy-glued into the deck-holes, ending forever the Swiss cheese jokes. A t that p o i n t , A n d y left t h e finish w o r k u p t o Kelly, w h o had already stripped the topsides to bare w o o d and refinished the varnished guards. Kelly l o o k e d w i t h dismay at the reassembly of the c e i l i n g , c e n t e r b o a r d a n d h a r d w a r e a n d t h e vast amounts of w o o d to be plugged, glazed, sanded, primed, a n d painted. Just then D o n n a Dashnau w a l k e d in a n d offered to help. D o n n a a n d Kelly have teamed well on other restoration jobs. M o r e than that, D o n n a puns, quips and jokes with dry N e w - H a m p s h i r e wit and machine-gun rapidity. A t this m o m e n t o f l o w - e b b e n e r g y i n t h e B e e t l e project, D o n n a w a s just the right p e r s o n . She and Kelly kept each other shaking w i t h laughter

what's meant by the d a u n t i n g phrase 'boat main¬ tenance' is nothing m o r e than good housecleani n g . S c r u b b i n g o u t a bilge a n d p a i n t i n g it is not t o o different f r o m refinishing k i t c h e n cabinets except y o u d o n ' t n e e d to s t a n d on a chair. I have a g r o u p o f w o m e n I've g r o w n t o call t h e ' b o a t ladies' w h o love to go out on the lake for i m p r o m p t u cruises. W h e n e v e r we go o u t , I m a k e it a practice to have s o m e little p i e c e o f ' m a i n t e n a n c e ' t o d o . N o b o d y a m o n g t h e b o a t ladies has e v e r s e e m e d at a loss w h e n h a n d e d a s c r a p e r , a p a i n t b r u s h , or a c a n of b r a s s p o l i s h . I've b e e n l u c k y that t h e b o a t itself has b e e n tight a n d d r y a n d I've b e e n s p a r e d a n y m a j o r r e s t o r a t i o n i n t h e t e n y e a r s I've o w n e d her. If I h a d to r e p l a c e a p l a n k or a h o r n t i m b e r like M a r t y L o k e n d i d , I'd p r o b a b l y h i r e i t d o n e f o r t h e

M o s t o f her c r u i s i n g t a k e s h e r n o farther than L a k e U n i o n a n d annual trips to the Poulsbo Boat Rendezvous are her long voyages. T h e s o u n d o f her o n e - l u n g d i e s e l , t h e s a u c y lines o f h e r P o u l s b o h u l l , a n d h e r t i n y c a b i n w i t h its single b e r t h c o n v i n c e d m e I w a s helplessly l a u n c h e d o n a l o n g term relationship." We pointed out that there didn't seem to be m u c h difference about the way she bought her boat a n d the w a y m o s t m e n buy theirs: p r u d e n c e a n d g o o d sense t o t a l l y s u s p e n d e d i n t h e p r e s e n c e of an irresistible object. W i t h D o n n a and Kelly w o r k i n g together, every part of the Beetle was r e f i n i s h e d , r e p a i r e d o r r e p l a c e d till i t w a s b e t t e r t h a n n e w a n d l a u n c h e d o n t h e first d a y o f s p r i n g . T h e r e f r a m e d B e e t l e i s b a c k i n o u r sailing fleet, looking shiny and proud. A s Little Kutie a n d I c h u g g e d s o u t h d o w n t h e l a k e , t h e h e a r t y beat o f t h e 6 h p diesel finally f r a c t u r e d t h e c o p p e r line t o t h e oil p r e s s u r e g a u g e a n d all t h e oil l e a k e d o n t o m y f r e s h paint j o b . In the past one-week w o r k s h o p s , s t u d e n t s h a v e b u i l t 10' H e r r e s h o f f p r a m s a n d 14' C h a m b e r lain d o r i e s . S i m o n w a n t e d a d i f f e r e n t h u l l t y p e t h i s t i m e . W h a t h e h a d i n m i n d w a s a classic r o w i n g scull, the t y p e seen in T h o m a s Eakin's p a i n t i n g s o f P h i l a d e l p h i a i n t h e 1880's. T h e s e a r c h f o r lines a n d o f f s e t s b e g a n , w i t h l o t s o f false l e a d s , u n t i l S i m o n d i s c o v e r e d j u s t t h e right m o d e l at San Francisco's S o u t h E n d R o w i n g C l u b . It was fiberglass. S i m o n a s k e d t h e club if h e c o u l d m e a s u r e t h e i r b o a t s , for r e p r o d u c t i o n i n w o o d . T h e y t o l d h i m t h e p l u g f o r t h e i r sculls w a s a v e r y o l d b o a t still i n e x i s t e n c e s o m e w h e r e a r o u n d the Bay, s o S i m o n diligently t r a c k e d d o w n the original version at the Petaluma b o a t s h o p of G r e g Saber. T h e b o a t ( a p p r o x i m a t e l y 8 0 y e a r s o l d ) w a s still i n r o w i n g c o n d i t i o n . G r e g l i k e d S i m o n ' s idea o f a student-built replica, and volunteered to m e a s u r e a n d d r a f t t h e lines f o r the w o r k s h o p . H e p r o d u c e d a m e t i c u l o u s set o f f u l l - s i z e d lines, so in h o n o r of G r e g Saber a n d the h o m e of the a n c i e n t s c u l l , w e n a m e d o u r s Petaluma.

T h e first is Voyage in a Square Rigger, 19131914, b y C a p t a i n A . G . G r a h a m , p u b l i s h e d i n 1984 b y t h e C o l u m b i a R i v e r M a r i t i m e M u s e u m . C a p t a i n G r a h a m ' s b o o k , w h i c h has j u s t 4 0 - o d d pages, a soft c o v e r a n d n u m e r o u s illustrations, is his a c c o u n t of a passage f r o m P o r t l a n d to S y d n e y a n d t h e n c e t o S a n F r a n c i s c o i n t h e LORD TEMPLETOWN t a k e n a t t h e age o f s i x t e e n . T h e LORD TEMPLETOWN, a British b a r k , was a f i n e , w e l l m a n a g e d s h i p w i t h a single f a u l t : s h e w a s o f t h e f e r r o u s p e r s u a s i o n . w i t h o u t ever stooping to persuasion. On second reading I realized that the u n d e r s t a t e d surface style v e i l e d u n d e r c u r r e n t s o f great d e p t h . H e r e was a c o m p r e h e n s i v e grasp of h o w the technology of the ship joined the forces of weather a n d sea t o t h e h u m a n s t r e n g t h s a n d frailty o f c a p t a i n a n d crew. In a simple c h r o n o l o g y of anecdotes he leads t h e r e a d e r t h r o u g h all p o i n t s o f sail, i n a n d o u t o f s t r a n g e p o r t s a n d w e a t h e r o f all s o r t s . I w o n ' t retell the stories, but they begin with the f a r m b o y asking for a b e r t h on a b a r k b o u n d for Portugal being t u r n e d d o w n by a captain w h o advises h i m to t a k e a longer voyage to S a n F r a n c i s c o , b e c a u s e i t w o u l d give h i m t i m e t o get over seasickness, b e c o m e a c c u s t o m e d to the w o r k on ship, a n d t h e n if he f o u n d that he didn't like i t h e w o u l d b e a t t h e e n d o f t h e v o y a g e i n his o w n c o u n t r y w i t h f o u r m o n t h s pay. W h o e v e r g o t s u c h g o o d a d v i c e w h e n s t a r t i n g o u t t o sail off t h e edge i n t o a t o t a l l y u n k n o w n c a r e e r ? I w o n ' t tell a b o u t t h e m a n o v e r b o a r d , n o r t h e r u n in w i t h the B r o o k l y n Bridge a n d I w o n ' t even m e n t i o n the trips to Seattle w h e r e a d o w n e a s t d e e p w a t e r m a n learned what the west coasters t h o u g h t o f p u m p k i n pie. A 22-FOOT C E N T R E B O A R D SLOOP By Paul Gartside This little c e n t r e b o a r d e r w a s d r a w n f o r G r a e m e Ashby of Victoria with the happy p r o s p e c t of beach cruising on the west coast of V a n c o u v e r Island, and the Baja peninsula tossed in as an ultimate d r e a m . S o a t r a i l a b l e o p e n sailboat w i t h g o o d all r o u n d p e r f o r m a n c e a n d a properly installed o u t b o a r d auxiliary, suitable for a m a t e u r c o n s t r u c t i o n was t h e brief. G r a e m e a r r i v e d w i t h d r a w i n g s o f a 2 1 foot S w a m p s c o t t d o r y , h o p i n g w e c o u l d m o d i f y i t t o suit. D o r i e s h a v e t h e i r p l a c e I'm s u r e , b u t I s u s p e c t t h e i r a p p e a l is l a r g e l y t h e a p p a r e n t simplicity of c o n s t r u c t i o n . T h e shape is usually m o r e o r less d i s a p p o i n t i n g . U s i n g p l y w o o d however, in wide planks, we can achieve m u c h m o r e s o p h i s t i c a t e d f o r m s f o r a similar o u t l a y i n e f f o r t . All stringers, framing a n d t h w a r t s are cedar for m i n i m u m w e i g h t , w i t h fir s u b s t i t u t e d w h e r e v e r w e a r a n d t e a r a r e likely - s t e m , k e e l e t c . I f p r e s s e d I'd e s t i m a t e t h e f i n i s h e d w e i g h t t o b e a b o u t 700 p o u n d s w i t h all t h e bits a n d p i e c e s , a c a r e f u l builder might k n o c k that d o w n a shade. 3
