T h e s a l m o n w h e r r y built b y G e o r g e C a l k i n s , Filsader, the lapstrake C o n c o r d i a of A h o i M e n c h , the W a s h i n g t o n C o u n t y p e a p o d built b y K e n H a r t z , a n d M a r t y L o k e n ' s P o u l s b o b o a t , Shine, w i t h a tres chic n e w c o l o r s c h e m e . S c h o o n e r R o w w a s i m p r e s s i v e w i t h the Adventuress, brigantine Spirit of Chemanius and

practically m a t c h i n g sets of Baltimore clippers, Lizard King a n d R u b e n d e C l o u x . T h e sight w a s e n o u g h to trigger a r u n - a w a y - t o - s e a u r g e in a wheat farmer. We gained some special knowledge through the t a l k s a n d d e m o n s t r a t i o n s — S t e v e P h i l l i p gave i n s i d e k n o w l e d g e o n the m a r i t i m e craft o f t h e Northwest Indians, C a r o l H a s s e talked about c r u i s i n g sails, T i m R e g a n d i d c a u l k i n g d e m o n s t r a tions. J e r r y C u l b e r s o n wrought attention in his b l a c k s m i t h demonstrations, there was a sawmill t o w a t c h , a n d r a d i o c o n t r o l l e d s a i l b o a t s t o try o u t . B i l l M o d r e l l w a s a n e n c y c l o p e d i a o f boatbuilding information. We hung a sign next to Bill a n d his c r u i s i n g s l o o p - i n - f r a m e m o d e l . It was a n a r r o w , v - b o t t o m , r o w i n g a n d sailing boat built w i t h great c r a f t s m a n s h i p b y B o b F i s h e r a n d T r i s h B a s h a w . T h e i r 1 5 ' 6 " Great Gatsby t h e m e w a s o r c h e s t r a t e d to the n t h degree, f r o m their m o n o g r a m e d T - s h i r t s for t h e c o n s t r u c t i o n , t o the p e n n a n t s , f l o w e r s , p i c n i c b a s k e t , a n d b o a t c u s h i o n s , a n d their G r e a t G a t s b y c o s t u m e s . T h e b o a t w a s s o g o o d , t h e y not o n l y w o n the first place trophy a n d c a s h prize, but s o l d the boat at the c o n c l u s i o n of the race! A s a t e a c h festival, we s a w c h i l d r e n fashioning the most delightfully-designed boats this side o f O z . O t h e r volunteers took equally d e m a n d i n g tasks: T h e D o c k m a s t e r j o b c o m b i n e s the p a t i e n c e o f J o b a n d the leadership of P a t t o n . At the Festival, K e l l y M u l f o r d d i d a n excellent imitation of J o b / P a t t o n . Pat H e r r o n had had quite another tough job. He kept the races in order. T h e food b o o t h s a d d e d a c o s m o p o l i t a n air to the affair a n d for s e t t i n g u p a n d r u n n i n g t h i s c a m p u s of taste delight, we thank N e i l a n d D a r l e n e Allen. THE COMET CRANDELL C a r e n C r a n d e l l ' s debut at C W B was as a v o l u n t e e r d u r i n g the frantic c o u n t d o w n h o u r s o f our Seventh A n n u a l W o o d e n Boat Festival. July 1983. S h e w a s h i r e d o n a s C W B ' s s e c o n d e m p l o y e e right after that s h o w . C a r e n ' s last j o b for C W B , a s A s s i s t a n t D i r e c t o r , w a s t o w r i t e a financ i a l r e p o r t o f t h e 10th A n n u a l W o o d e n B o a t F e s t i v a l t h i s past J u l y . H e r t h r e e y e a r s o n C W B ' s staff w e r e the t o u g h e s t y e a r s o u r staff w i l l e v e r see. I m m e d i a t e l y after the d u s t s e t t l e d o n the S e v e n t h B o a t Festival, o u r rental, educational, interpretative, and volunteer programs had to be improvised and i m p l e m e n t e d o n the s p o t . C a r e n t h r e w h e r s e l f into the challenge w i t h unflagging energy a n d enthusiasm. O u r programs and systems operate s m o o t h l y n o w b e c a u s e o f the h o u r s b e y o n d m e a s u r e spent by C a r e n a n d the D i r e c t o r analyzing a n d agonizing over h o w t o a c c o m p l i s h o u r goals a n d m a k e it look like we were hardly trying. S h e is wise, w a r m , patient, upbeat, tireless a n d c u r i o u s . S h e has r e l e n t l e s s i n t e g r i t y a n d l o y a l t y . a n d a l w a y s w o r k e d late t o c o m p l e t e a c o m m i t ment. C a r e n was willing t o e x p e r i m e n t w i t h her w a y s o f d o i n g t h i n g s . H e r v a r i o u s hair styles w e r e t h e c u t t i n g e d g e i n h u m a n k i n d ' s q u e s t for c l a s s i c t o n s o r i a l e l e g a n c e that w i l l l o o k g o o d i n 100 k n o t winds. C a r e n was witty. W h o e v e r d a r e d c r a c k a joke, p u n or wise remark to C a r e n , received a response as quick and powerful as a M c E n r o e forehand smash. To our volunteers, C a r e n was den mother, m a t c h m a k e r , a n d c o n f e s s o r . O u r s c h o o l field trips were created a n d r u n b y C a r e n . S h e guided the k i d s t h r o u g h a t h o u s a n d y e a r s o f b o a t b u i l d i n g history like a M a r i n e drill sergeant. T h e y will r e m e m b e r their r i v e t i n g , k n o t t y i n g , a n d r o w i n g e x p e r i e n c e , a n d j u m p i n g j a c k e x e r c i s e that b e g a n the s e s s i o n s — t h e b e t t e r t o b u r n off t h e i r h o t flame o f e x c e s s e n e r g y — C a r e n e x p l a i n e d .

T H E HITS J U S T KEEP O N COMING T w o s a i l b o a t d e s i g n s f r o m the A t l a n t i c s e a b o a r d h a v e a d d e d s o m e E a s t C o a s t style t o the C W B r e n t a l fleet. I n fact, w i t h t w o c a t b o a t s , t w o C o n c o r d i a sloop boats, and the new donations, T h e P o o l i s b e g i n n i n g t o l o o k s m o r e like t h e

Penobscot Bay than Puget S o u n d country. M i k e Heltsley of Nor'west G r a p h i c s donated a n 18-foot H a m p t o n O n e D e s i g n S l o o p . S h e l o o k s s o m e t h i n g like a S t a r w i t h a b o u t half a Star's freeboard, but has a c e n t e r b o a r d a n d a lovely s p o o n bow. Built of cedar over o a k , the H a m p t o n has a carvel hull. S h e c a m e to us c o m p l e t e w i t h sails a n d a full c o m p l e m e n t o f b e a u t i f u l o l d - f a s h i o n e d b r o n z e h a r d w a r e , all stock. D e s i g n e d for the H a m p t o n ( V A ) Y a c h t C l u b in 1935, the height of t h e D e p r e s s i o n , t h e s e swift sloops were very popular. C u r r e n t l y there are s o m e 6 8 0 h u l l s still s a i l i n g o n t h e C h e s a p e a k e B a y , m a k i n g t h e m t h e largest o n e - d e s i g n c l a s s i n the a r e a . S a i l h e r o n c e i n a g o o d b r e e z e a n d y o u ' l l d i s c o v e r s e v e r a l r e a s o n s for t h e H a m p t o n ' s continued popularity. T h e big steel c e n t e r b o a r d gives t h e b o a t l o t s of initial s t a b i l i t y . A r a c i n g b o a t i n t e n d e d t o test the m e t t l e o f e n t h u s i a s t i c s a i l o r s , the H a m p t o n p o i n t s h i g h a n d w o r k s w e l l to w i n d w a r d . S h e ' s q u i c k in stays, c o m i n g a r o u n d e a s i l y . T h e large m a r c o n i r i g a n d m a s t h e a d j i b provide a nice t u r n of s p e e d on any point of s a i l i n g . W h e n Edmonds member George Galpin off e r e d t o d o n a t e his s a i l b o a t , o u r D i r e c t o r w a n t e d t o b e s u r e i t w o u l d fit i n t o o u r w o r k i n g c o l l e c t i o n . I n t h e past p e o p l e h a v e d o n a t e d s o m e craft that m a d e u s w o n d e r w h e t h e r the " W " i n o u r n a m e s t o o d for w o o d e n o r w e i r d . W h e n D i c k h e a r d t h a t the b o a t h a d b e e n built i n 1926, h e g r o a n e d inwardly. T h e C e n t e r already has a nice selection o f b e a c h e d b o a t s that n e e d e x t e n s i v e r e s t o r a t i o n a n d s o m e d a y s it's all t h e V o l u n t e e r V e s s e l M a i n t e n a n c e C r e w c a n d o t o k e e p the f l o a t i n g collection painted. But when G e o r g e revealed that t h e b o a t h e h a d i n m i n d w a s floating, h a d b e e n r e s t o r e d , a n d c a m e w i t h a full suit o f sails she s o u n d e d m u c h m o r e attractive. W h e n he m e n t i o n e d that s h e w a s a H e r r e s h o f f B u z z a r d ' s B a y 1 2 - 1 / 2 ' , D i c k c o u l d n ' t a c c e p t fast e n o u g h . " N o w I k n o w w h a t it's l i k e t o d r i v e a R o l l s R o y c e , " D i c k g l o a t s . " S h e ' s the biggest 15-foot s a i l b o a t I've s e e n , w i t h r o o m for u p t o s i x a d u l t s . S i n c e s h e h a s a full k e e l , t h e r e ' s n o t r u n k t a k i n g u p the c e n t e r o f t h e c o c k p i t . " T h e cockpit's deep, too, so n o b o d y needs to p e r c h on the washboards. Instead there are seats a l o n g b o t h s i d e s , n i c e l y tilted a t e x a c t l y the right angle t o t u r n t h e c o c k p i t c o a m i n g i n t o a s o f a back. F o r the S p r u c e B r e e z e S a i l o r s Students in R o y Kobayashi's class at Seattle C o m m u n i t y College have restored the L a k e O s w e g o B o a t , the f i r s t w a t e r c r a f t d o n a t e d t o the C e n t e r . W h e n D i c k suggested the O s w e g o Boat as a project s o m e three years ago, R o y d e m u r r e d saying that it was too c o m p l i c a t e d an undert a k i n g . B u t w h e n the s t u d e n t s c a m e d o w n w i t h h i m this y e a r , s h e w a s the b o a t t h e y w a n t e d t o w o r k o n . T h e y b l o c k e d t h e boat u p a n d r e p l a c e d e v e r y o t h e r r i b . T h a t s t a b i l i z e d the hull s h a p e s o t h e y c o u l d r e p l a c e the s t e m , the s t e r n , a n d the rest o f t h e r i b s . F i n a l t o u c h e s i n c l u d e d a bright o a k r u b rail a t the s h e e r , p a i n t e r s s p l i c e d o n fore a n d aft, a n d a s h i n y w h i t e p a i n t j o b w i t h a S e a t t l e G r a y i n t e r i o r , bright s e a t s , a n d a g r e e n t o p strake. I n this E x p o s i t i o n o f T r a n s p o r t a t i o n a n d C o m m u n i c a t i o n , the v a r i e t y o f m e a n s a n d m e t h o d s m a n h a s u s e d t o t r a v e l a c r o s s the w a t e r a r e s o diverse as to be staggering. L o g rafts, r e e d craft, dugout canoes, outriggers, sewn planks, lashed hulls, skin-covered, paddled, poled, sailed in lateen, lug, square-rigged, c r a b - c l a w e d - they're all t h e r e , for a v o y a g e of d i s c o v e r y i n t o the development of watercraft and ships. I n the B e g i n n i n g W a s the R e e d Early M e s o p o t a m i a is represented by buoyant boats created from the only available r e s o u r c e r e e d s . T h o r H e y e r d a h l , w h o m a d e the o c e a n g o i n g R A I I f a m o u s , s u g g e s t e d that o r i g i n a l l y s u c h a vessel sailed from M e s o p o t a m i a to P e r u , b r i n g i n g t h e r e e d t e c h n o l o g y t o the N e w W o r l d . A large r e e d vessel similar to RA II is on display at E X P O along with smaller P e r u v i a n reed vessels called caballos de totoro, or reed horses, w h i c h a r e o n e m a n v e s s e l s m o u n t e d like a h o r s e a n d p r o p e l l e d u s i n g t h e legs a s p a d d l e s . T h e K e n y a n i m b a t c h e a l s o u s e s this b u o y a n t resource. M a d e of bundled reeds and propelled b y t w o h a n d s c o o p s , t h e i m b a t c h e o n l y floats for t w o t o t h r e e d a y s b e f o r e i t m u s t b e h a u l e d u p on land to dry. T h e B r a z i l i a n jangada is a testimony to the s u c c e s s a n d s o p h i s t i c a t i o n o f a s a i l i n g l o g raft. R e m a r k a b l y l i k e t o d a y ' s w i n d s u r f e r , this o f f s h o r e f i s h i n g raft h a s b e e n i n use for t h e last 4 0 0 y e a r s , w i t h s p e e d built i n t o the d e s i g n t o c a r r y the f i s h e r m a n safely h o m e f r o m s q u a l l s a n d b e f o r e t h e d a r k n e s s o f night. Striking cedar dugouts, from our Northwest C o a s t cultures, are represented by a W e s t C o a s t w h a l i n g c a n o e built r e c e n t l y i n V i c t o r i a , a n d b y a freshly c a r v e d 5 0 ' H a i d a c a n o e h e w n u n d e r the careful scrutiny of master carver Bill Reid. T h i s c a n o e , n a m e d t h e Wave Eater, w a s c a r v e d f r o m a 750 y e a r o l d r e d c e d a r . T h e o r i g i n a l b e a m o f the canoe was 4' until it w a s spread in the ancient m e t h o d w i t h water a n d red hot r o c k s t o p r o d u c e a m o r e s e a w o r t h y f i n i s h e d w i d t h o f a l m o s t 6'. Culture Shapes Traditional Craft A small Bangladesh w o r k b o a t , of sewn s e a m j o i n e r y , i s f i s h b o a t , h o m e , freighter a n d ferry. It m o v e s by p a d d l e s , p o l i n g or a s m a l l s q u a r e s a i l w h e n the w i n d i s f a v o r a b l y aft. T h o u s a n d s of this t y p e of craft h a v e r e c e n t l y b e e n d e s t r o y e d b y t y p h o o n s a n d t i d a l w a v e s , a n d few a r e b e i n g r e b u i l t . T h i s t y p e o f b o a t i s well s u i t e d for p e o p l e w h o s e w h o l e lives a r e o r i e n t e d t o a w a t e r e n v i r o n ment where trade, schooling, a n d one's m e a n s of m a k i n g a l i v e l i h o o d a r e all s a t i s f i e d o n t h e waterways. F e r r y i n g craft reflect o t h e r c u l t u r a l e x t r e m e s . A V e n e t i a n gondola is an o u t s t a n d i n g example.

T h e b l a c k h u l l is f i n i s h e d to a l a c q u e r s h e e n . Its fittings a r e elegant b r o n z e c a s t i n g s . T h e w o r k m a n s h i p is that of a fine m a s t e r c a b i n e t m a k e r , m a d e b y the f a m o u s Italian g o n d o l a a r t i s a n , G i o v a n i G u i p p o n e , a n d d o n a t e d t o the V a n c o u v e r M a r i t i m e M u s e u m a s a gift f r o m V e n i c e . Its s h a p e a s s u r e s n a v i g a t i o n i n s h a l l o w w a t e r s . It c a r r i e s t h r e e p l u s the g o n d o l i e r . In sharp contrast is o n e of my favorites, T a m b a g u e p r a h u f r o m 17th C e n t u r y B a n j a r K i n g d o m in A s i a . It is a gently elegant n a r r o w r i v e r i n e craft w i t h a t h a t c h e d r o o f w h i c h c a n c a r r y 2 0 p e o p l e o n b a m b o o slat m a t s . I t i s c a p a b l e o f r a c i n g o n the m i g h t y K a l i m a n t a R i v e r . V a n c o u v e r ' s o w n s t e a m l a u n c h , the A n t i c , i s a fine r e p l i c a o f the 1896 B u r r a r d Inlet f e r r y w h i c h c a r r i e d p a s s e n g e r s t o a n d fro b e f o r e the p r e s e n t b r i d g e s w e r e built. Its r e c e n t r e s t o r a t i o n i n c l u d e d the r e n o v a t i o n o f its s t e a m e n g i n e . B o a t s o f e x p l o r e r s a n d e x p l o i t e r s are a l s o represented in assorted hull forms. N o w , The Golden Hinde, a r e p l i c a of F r a n c i s D r a k e ' s w o r l d e n c o m p a s s i n g galleon, has taken the Bounty's p l a c e . S h e s a i d t h e Windmill w a s still free. I a s k e d h e r t o f i n d m e a c r e w — o n e w h o k n e w h o w to sail. I offered to help as she s t a r t e d t o r i g the little p l y w o o d s l o o p , b u t w a s t o l d I wasn't needed. A cheerful y o u n g m a n c a m e up a n d a s k e d C a r e n if anyone needed a crew. She replied " J o h n here does". I a s k e d h i m if he knew h o w t o sail a n d h e replied " N o " . C a r e n r e a d m y

I t i m e d t h e start w e l l , b u t j u s t b e f o r e t h e h o r n , I d r o p p e d t h e tiller a n d w e d i d a 3 6 0 d e g r e e c i r c l e u p w i n d as the rest of the fleet t o o k off. T h e traditional boats went well d o w n w i n d and w e d i d not c a t c h t h e m u n t i l t h e y n e a r e d the first m a r k , a r e d b u o y . I told my c r e w what to expect. T h e b o a t s a h e a d o f u s p a s s e d c l o s e t o the m a r k t h e n g y b e d b e y o n d it. W e a p p r o a c h e d the m a r k w i d e r a n d q u i c k l y c l o s e d o n it, u p w i n d o f t h e others. T h e Windmill w a s fast o n a r e a c h a n d w e r a p i d l y s a i l e d p a s t b o a t after b o a t u n t i l , a s w e n e a r e d the m a r k o n the east s i d e o f the l a k e , o n l y a Midwest s c o w was a h e a d of us. We c a m e about q u i c k a n d c l e a n , b u t the s c o w h e l d her l e a d a s w e r e a c h e d b a c k to the red b u o y , gybed, a n d r e a c h e d a g a i n b a c k t o the e a s t s i d e o f the l a k e . T h e s c o w fell off t h e l e e w a r d o n the p o r t t a c k b a c k t o w a r d t h e f i n i s h line. W e p o i n t e d h i g h e r a n d I thought we c o u l d c a t c h her; but, she c r o s s e d o u r b o w o n a s t a r b o a r d t a c k i n front o f the N a v a l R e s e r v e B a s e a n d f i n i s h e d a h e a d o f u s .
