A t this p l a c e , just a c r o s s S a l m o n B a y f r o m B a l l a r d , the w o r l d ' s largest N o r w e g i a n c i t y , i s a h a u l o u t a n d b o a t r e p a i r y a r d , a c r e s for g e a r s t o r a g e a n d net r e p a i r , a n d a h o s t o f s u p p o r t services providing paint, hardware, rigging, c h a r t s , a n d e v e r y t h i n g else a f i s h e r m a n n e e d s , from boots to color sonar. Of c o u r s e the most obvious aspect of the t e r m i n a l i s the m a s s o f f i s h i n g b o a t s , r a n g i n g i n s i z e f r o m 30-foot c l a s s i c d o u b l e - e n d e d t r o l l e r s w i t h d o l l - s i z e d p i l o t h o u s e s , t o 90-foot s t a u n c h , high-bowed halibut s c h o o n e r s . E v e r y type of Pacific N o r t h w e s t fishing vessel is there, rigged for t r o l l i n g , g i l l n e t t i n g , s e i n i n g , h a n d l i n i n g , c r a b b i n g , t r a w l i n g , a n d p r o c e s s i n g . T h e floats a r e j a m m e d with boats. T h e sky is a web of masts, b o o m s , a n d rigging. T h i s paints a scene of the f i s h i n g b u s i n e s s a s c o l o r f u l a n d p i c t u r e s q u e . It's also a d a m n dangerous business. Visiting F i s h e r m a n ' s T e r m i n a l there is no i n d i c a t i o n of s t o r m s , bitter c o l d , long h o u r s of hauling, overturned boats, wave-swept d e c k s , w i l d l y t h r a s h i n g b o o m s . L i v e s h a v e b e e n lost a t s e a . It is p a r t of t h e t e r r i t o r y , f i s h i n g in t h e Northwest Pacific. Seattle's fishing c o m m u n i t y recently d e c i d e d to d o s o m e t h i n g a b o u t h o n o r i n g the o n e s that d i d n ' t come back. They formed a committee r e p r e s e n t i n g all a s p e c t s o f the w o r k i n g fleet t o c o m m i s s i o n a m e m o r i a l sculpture or art w o r k as " a tribute t o the m e n a n d w o m e n , their families, a n d t h e f i s h i n g c o m m u n i t y that h a v e s u f f e r e d l o s s of life at s e a . Two issues ago we r e m a r k e d that the p r e p o n d e r a n c e of East C o a s t designs a m o n g o u r r e c e n t l y d o n a t e d b o a t s h a d the P o o l l o o k i n g m o r e like C a m d e n , M a i n e t h a n Seattle, W a s h i n g t o n . M o l l y H o g a n must have h e a r d us clear d o w n in S a n Francisco, California because she has d o n a t e d a boat that's m o r e Pacific N o r t h w e s t e r n t h a n j o k e s a b o u t rain...a Puget S o u n d gillnetter. T h e Martha Jane is 33 feet l o n g w i t h an 8-1/2 foot b e a m a n d a 3 foot draft. A m o r e t y p i c a l g i l l n e t t e r w o u l d b e h a r d t o f i n d . c o m m i t t e e first c a r e f u l l y c u l l e d the d e s i g n s t o t h e b e s t e i g h t , t h e n t h e b e s t t h r e e , a n d finally t h e y c h o s e o n e . T h e w i n n i n g d e s i g n i s a free s t a n d i n g c o l u m n o f b l a c k c a s t s t o n e w i t h a six-foot h i g h c a s t b r o n z e r i n g a t the b a s e , d e p i c t i n g t h e f i s h i n g resources of the Pacific N o r t h w e s t . At the c o l u m n ' s top will be a cast b r o n z e f i s h e r m a n — simple, classic, noble. T h e designer is R o n Petty, a Seattle sculptor w h o s e w o r k s are found in several public places in Seattle. H i s most w e l l - k n o w n w o r k possibly is the " A n i m a l S t o r m " c o l u m n at Wallingford Center. R o n i s a c a r p e n t e r , h a s built s o m e b o a t s , a n d h a s t a k e n his family o n a " c r u i s e " d o w n the Y u k o n r i v e r — o v e r 600 miles of w i l d e r n e s s — i n a 2 4 ' o p e n skiff h e b u i l t . T h e s e c r e d e n t i a l s g a v e h i m i n s i g h t into the m e m o r i a l design. He k n o w s h a r d labor, pressing competition, a n d small boats in a big sea. F i s h e r m a n ' s T e r m i n a l is a b o u t to receive a remodeling. Don't worry, it won't have " b o a t i q u e s " a n d c u t e s y s h o p s . T h e r e will b e piers for m o r e f i s h i n g b o a t s , m o r e s p a c e for v e s s e l repair a n d net repair, m o r e gear storage, a n d a f i s h a u c t i o n facility. T h e o l d , d e t e r i o r a t i n g " W h a r f R e s t a u r a n t " w i l l b e t o r n d o w n . I n its p l a c e w i l l b e a m u l t i - u s e b u i l d i n g for r e s t a u r a n t , t a v e r n , f i s h i n g c r e w l o u n g e , a n d t e r m i n a l office. T h e b u i l d i n g i s d e s i g n e d in traditional w h a r f s h e d , b o a t y a r d style. It will look like it was always there. T h i s s t r u c t u r e has two wings on grade level, c r e a t i n g a wide c o v e r e d passageway to a p l a z a jutting into the c e n t e r o f the h a r b o r . F i s h e r m a n ' s m e m o r i a l w i l l be sited in the plaza. T h i s p l a z a will be the v i s i t o r s ' first v i e w o f the v e s s e l s a n d the s i t e o f t h e a n n u a l b l e s s i n g of the fleet. It s h o u l d all be in p l a c e by s p r i n g '88. Rising above vessels, d o c k s i d e activity, a n d p a s s e r s by will be a fisherman b r a c e d against the r o l l i n g d e c k , s t r a i n i n g o n line a n d gaff, u n y i e l d i n g t o t h e w i n d , r a i n , a n d c o l d . one-man head-and-shoulders pilothouse, her double-ended design, a n d her jaunty sheer are a l m o s t a d e f i n i t i o n of t h e t y p e . A t r i p to B a l l a r d w o u l d find 20 just like her, or w o u l d have 15 years ago. T h o u g h M s . H o g a n has p a p e r s that say Martha Jane w a s b u i l t in S e a t t l e by H a n s e n , s h e r a t h e r d o u b t s it. S h e s a y s that it l o o k s l i k e a C a n a d i a n b o a t a n d that s h e " s a w a b o u t five i n a r o w , identical, c o m i n g out of B e l l a B e l l a o n e time." Fishermen who've been d o w n to the C e n t e r a g r e e w i t h M s . H o g a n , b u t it's m o r e o f a feeling t h a n a n y t h i n g c e r t a i n . A B o a t w i t h a n Inside Martha Jane's interior arrangements, like those of her sisters, are spartan. T w o b u n k s are j a m m e d f o r w a r d i n t o t h e b o w s , the c a b i n b e i n g d o m i n a t e d b y t h e C h r y s l e r C r o w n e n g i n e . It's n o t a v e r y big e n g i n e , b u t t h e n it's n o t a v e r y b i g c a b i n . T h e r e are two t o u c h e s of luxury: a big skylight m a d e o u t o f a nifty b r a s s p o r t h o l e f r o m a m u c h larger s h i p a n d a tiny w o o d s t o v e c o n v e r t e d to d i e s e l for c o o k i n g . T h e r e i s n o h e a d , o f c o u r s e . T h e r e are t w o r e a s o n s that o u r D i r e c t o r is e x c i t e d a b o u t the Martha Jane. F i r s t , it's a t r u l y

t r a d i t i o n a l b o a t , o n e w h i c h the C e n t e r c a n u s e t o illustrate the e v o l u t i o n of a type. H e r heritage is seen in her lines—from C o l u m b i a River salmon boat to B r i s t o l B a y sailing gillnetter to o u r boat. T h e line c o n t i n u e s , t o o . O n P u g e t I s l a n d i n t h e C o l u m b i a the gillnetters n e e d m o r e p o w e r t h a n 6 to 8 k n o t s , b u t Martha Jane's s t e r n w o u l d s q u a t sadly if it went faster. A g a l v a n i z e d p i p e g u a r d c o v e r e d with a section of rubber g a r d e n hose c i r c l e s the s t e r n n e a r w a t e r l e v e l t o k e e p t h e w e b o u t o f the w h e e l . T w o w o o d e n net r o l l e r s a r e temporarily out of their s u p p o r t s , but they're b e i n g s a v e d . O v e r t h e net r e e l a n d the t w o s t e r n fishing stations, another galvanized pipe s t r u c t u r e s e r v e s a s f r a m e w o r k for a r a i n c o v e r a n d a s u p p o r t for the net lights for night f i s h i n g . T h e r e a r e t h r e e h e l m s , o n e i n the tiny p i l o t h o u s e u s e d w h e n p a s s a g e m a k i n g , o n e o n the b a c k o f the c a b i n s o a f i s h e r m a n c a n s t a n d o u t s i d e l o o k i n g for t h e b r e a k that m e a n s a s c h o o l o f fish, a n d o n e o n the port q u a r t e r s o o n e c r e w m a n (or w o m a n - lots of these smaller boats had h u s b a n d a n d wife a s a t e a m ) c o u l d s t e e r a n d t e n d net w h i l e the o t h e r p i c k e d the c a t c h .

S h e s a y s s o m u c h a b o u t a f i s h e r m a n ' s life. T h e p o w e r t r a i n for t h e net r e e l , m a d e f r o m a t h r e e s p e e d t r u c k t r a n s m i s s i o n a n d differential is i n s p i r e d j u n k e n g i n e e r i n g . T h e w e l d e d - o n shift e x t e n s i o n ( s o i t c a n b e w o r k e d f r o m d e a d aft a t the t h i r d s t e e r i n g s t a t i o n w h i l e w a t c h i n g the net) i s o b v i o u s l y tailored to a s p e c i f i c i n d i v i d u a l ' s c o m f o r t a b l e r e a c h . T h e r e ' s a j a k e b r a k e t o l o c k the d r i v e shaft a n d s t o p the r e e l . P a t c h e d t o g e t h e r o u t o f s c r a p c o m p o n e n t s it speaks eloquently of ingenuity, s i m p l i c i t y , a n d a tight b u d g e t . I f y o u ' r e o n e o f the a r m c h a i r t y p e s w h o e n v i e s the i n d e p e n d e n t life of a f i s h e r m a n , l o o k at t h e d e c k s of the fishing station. H o w m a n y h o u r s of s t a n d i n g i n the r a i n a n d c o l d d i d i t t a k e t o w e a r t h r o u g h the m u l t i p l e l a y e r s o f b u r l a p y o u s e e t a c k e d d o w n there? L o o k at the ready b o x that h e l d t h e c a t c h t e m p o r a r i l y w h i l e the net w a s b e i n g p i c k e d . P r e t t y s m a l l , isn't it? H o w l o n g d i d i t t a k e t o fill it? S t i l l , M r . S u n d n e s s , m y n e i g h b o r h o o d f i s h e r m a n , k e p t h i s boat i n S a l m o n B a y . s l e p t a t h o m e f o u r n i g h t s o u t o f s e v e n , a n d p r o v i d e d for a family o f four. T h e s a l m o n were bigger t h e n , b y a n average of 8 to 12 p o u n d s , but they w e r e a l s o what y o u ate w h e n it w a s a c h o i c e b e t w e e n canned salmon and S p a m . A n d come to think of it, M r . S u n d n e s s w a s a c a b i n e t m a k e r i n t h e off season. Her Future Martha Jane n e e d s w o r k , o f c o u r s e . N o v e m b e r brings s c a u p s , buffleheads, grebes, g o l d e n e y e s , a n d c a n v a s b a c k s f r o m t h e far n o r t h t o rest a n d f e e d o n L a k e U n i o n b e f o r e t h e y p r o c e e d to a winter of lollygagging in s o m e w a r m , sunny spot. November a l s o k i c k s off C W B ' s W i n t e r W o r k s h o p series a t o u r floating s h o p o n L a k e U n i o n . T h e migrating birds meet migrating instructor, S i m o n Watts, and many migrating students. In o n e very long, very exhausting, very exhilarating w e e k , s e v e n s t u d e n t s built a 20-foot lapstrake wherry, complete a n d ready to row. It happened twice in November. B u i l d i n g a r o u n d - b o t t o m boat is an o l d story. W e h a v e a l o n g shelf i n o u r l i b r a r y filled w i t h t h e s e stories on boatbuilding: Simplified Boatbuilding, Basic Boat Building, Boatbuilding In Your Own Backyard, Boatbuilding Manual, Lapstrake Boatbuilding, Clinker Boatbuilding, Small Boat Building, and Boatbuilding. There are more books written and more about to be written. E a c h h a s b e e n p e n n e d b y s o m e o n e i n t r i n s i c a l l y familiar w i t h t h e p r o c e s s . E a c h a u t h o r b e l i e v e s his e x p l a n a t i o n is a clear, logical guide, p r o v i d i n g E V E R Y T H I N G y o u h a v e t o k n o w t o get the j o b done. T h a t ' s t h e g a p o u r w o r k s h o p s fill. A w e e k i n a l i b r a r y is g o o d . A w e e k in a s h o p is i n v a l u a b l e . O u r c o l l e g e o f d i r e c t k n o w l e d g e i s a n eight hour-a-day question a n d answer session involving h a n d s , e y e s , a n d b r a i n s f o c u s e d o n t h e v e r y stuff of the boatbuilding process. Puzzlement becomes revelation. Hesitation becomes p r o u d accomplishment. Slow movements become effortless f l o u r i s h e s . The week ends with a launching. T h e s h o p is back in order, s p e e c h e s are made, diplomas a w a r d e d , c h a m p a g n e sipped, turns are taken in the boat. T h e s t u d e n t s are tired, but g l o w i n g w i t h p l e a s u r e a b o u t w h a t t h e y h a v e built a n d l e a r n e d . T h e r e is sadness, too. This group has b e c o m e a w e l d e d b a n d , s h a r i n g the w o r k , sharing their d r e a m s . T h e y l i n g e r after the h o o p l a . T h i s i s a moment that will not come again. Ship's Bells, W e d d i n g Bells, C h r i s t m a s Bells T o n i C i c c a n t i and Charlie M a s t r o were married D e c e m b e r 2 0 t h a t t h e C e n t e r for W o o d e n B o a t s . S u r r o u n d e d by relatives a n d friends f r o m near a n d afar, t h e y e x c h a n g e d v o w s i n the b o a t h o u s e , w h i c h was festooned with holiday trappings. The event formalized their long term relationships' commitment and it was interspersed with solemnity, applause and laughter. This territory brought back m e m o r i e s o f s a i l i n g a n d c a m p i n g w i t h the s m a l l S n i p e fleet f r o m R o y a l V i c t o r i a Y a c h t C l u b b e f o r e W.W.II. T h e s i x t e e n foot W h i t e b e a r skiff f o l l o w e d a l o n g q u i e t l y a s w e d r o v e t o S i d n e y b y w a y o f the 7:00 a.m. ferry from homes in Ladner and T s a w w a s s e n . T h e r e are several launching ramps c l o s e t o S i d n e y b u t w e c h o s e the o n e i n a s m a l l m a r i n a w i t h i n a b l o c k of t h e m a i n street because it s e e m e d t o p r o v i d e r e a s o n a b l y safe p a r k i n g for t h e c a r a n d trailer. W h i l e the a u d i e n c e w a i t e d for t h e h i g h e s t t i d e , a N a t i o n a l l y F a m o u s Rigger s t r a d d l e d the b o w s p r i t a n d c r a w l e d out o n it carrying a c o m e - a l o n g in o n e h a n d a n d holding the f o r e s t a y i n the o t h e r . W h e n h e got t o t h e e n d o f t h e s p r i t , h e f a s t e n e d the c o m e - a l o n g t o the s t a y just a b o v e t h e s h a c k l e w i t h s o m e t h i n g t h a t l o o k e d like a long, dirty rag. Ratchet, ratchet, r a t c h e t , w e n t the c o m e - a l o n g u n t i l all t h e s h r o u d s and stays achieved uniform tension. T h e shackle pin went in gently a n d the N F R l o o k e d up at the r i g a n d s a i d , " H o t stuff, i t all w o r k s . " That long, dirty, rag was a rope-yarn selvagee a n d w e t r i e d for t w o y e a r s t o get t h e N F R t o w r i t e

supplies to leave at h o m e , but not, of c o u r s e , s u c h goodies as R a n d ' s gallon of home-made c o o k i e s . We were well prepared to survive hurricanes, tsunamis, plague, scurvy, a n d probably a m o n t h a t s e a , a n d s o m e h o w e v e r y t h i n g got c o m p r e s s e d until o u r profile l o o k e d m o r e like a S p a n i s h galleon than a m o u n t a i n range. T h e r e w a s a c t u a l l y r o o m for e a c h t o t a k e full s t r o k e s ! F l a s h i n g lights on the highway from S i d n e y to V i c t o r i a s h o w e d the l o c a t i o n o f S t e v e F o n y o o n the last l a p o f his c r o s s c o u n t r y r u n t o r a i s e m o n e y for c a n c e r r e s e a r c h . T h i s y o u n g , o n e - l e g g e d r u n n e r w a s m a k i n g better time t h a n w e were. O h w e l l , w e e x c u s e d o u r s e l v e s o n the b a s i s o f u s i n g o n l y o n e e n g i n e at a t i m e to a l l o w t h e o t h e r fifteen minutes to c o o l d o w n . An hour's row against a v e r y light w i n d b r o u g h t u s t o the s a n d y b e a c h o f C o r d o v a S p i t for a l u n c h b r e a k . T h e o p e n fields o n the n e a r b y s o u t h e n d o f J a m e s I s l a n d g l o w e d yellow with flowering b r o o m . S m o o t h water a l l o w e d u s t o c u t a c r o s s the e x t e n s i v e s h a l l o w s s o u t h o f J a m e s I s l a n d w i t h o u t c o n c e r n for the n a s t y c h o p that c a n o f t e n b e r a i s e d t h e r e w h e n t h e w i n d o p p o s e s the s t r o n g t i d a l c u r r e n t s . T h e n o r t h w e s t c o r n e r o f D ' A r c y Island s e e m e d t o offer g o o d s h e l t e r f r o m e i t h e r s o u t h w e s t o r southeast winds so we a p p r o a c h e d a pebbly b e a c h . A s m a l l , f u r r y face w e a r i n g a b l a c k m a s k w a t c h e d the i n v a s i o n w i t h great i n t e r e s t a n d s o m e a p p r e h e n s i o n . W i t h this rule o p e r a t i n g a t full f o r c e d u r i n g o u r e x p e d i t i o n , w e h a d to be careful that the highest level p a t c h of p e b b l e s for t h e tent w a s o u t o f r e a c h o f the w a t e r . It w a s , j u s t . Setting up c a m p and eating a hearty supper b r o u g h t o n the d e s i r e for a h i k e w h i c h , b e c a u s e o f the heavy u n d e r g r o w t h , w a s mainly confined to the w a t e r f r o n t . A d o z e n o r s o p e b b l e b e a c h e s with steep, intervening, r o c k y promontories m a d e the 2-1/2 mile perimeter of the island a moderately hard hike. E a c h beach was patrolled b y a t least o n e r a c c o o n . T i n y g a r d e n s f e a t u r i n g the b r i g h t y e l l o w f l o w e r s o f s t o n e c r o p w e r e q u i t e c o m m o n a l o n g the e d g e o f the forest. T h e p i n k f l o w e r s o f w i l d r o s e s w e r e e n h a n c e d b y the d a r k green b a c k g r o u n d as were the reddish b r o w n limbs of a r b u t u s trees, ( M a d r o n a s in U . S . A . ) T h i s island was inhabited by a leper c o l o n y long ago when persons having Hansen's Disease were kept i n e x t r e m e i s o l a t i o n . T h e c o n c r e t e r e m a i n s of o n e of their s t r u c t u r e s a p p e a r e d in the u n d e r b r u s h w h e n w e t o o k o n e o f t h e few s h o r t c u t s a w a y f r o m the b e a c h . L a t e t h a t n i g h t , the r a i n set i n for a fifteen h o u r d o w n p o u r . Fortunately the hike had evaporated the


a Shavings p i e c e a b o u t it. N o l u c k . W e finally realized that, as an author, the N F R couldn't a f f o r d t o g i v e t h e s e t h i n g s a w a y free. So we turned to a C W B e r whose middle name w a s K n o t . N o , b y o g g i n . K n o t w a s his last n a m e . H e p r o m i s e d t o tell u s all a b o u t s e l v a g e e s . H e h a d o n e i n his s h o p h e ' d b r i n g b y . W e h a v e n ' t s e e n h i m i n a y e a r a n d a half. T h e n t h e r e w a s a n e x N a v y b o s ' u n w h o said he'd s h o w us. He's disappeared, too. A m e m b e r w h o w o r k s in a local chandlery said he'd f o u n d an article on selvagees i n a p r e - w a r Rudder m a g a z i n e . H e p r o m i s e d t o X e r o x a c o p y a n d mail it to us. He also seems to

have vanished, taking our stamped, selfaddressed envelope with him. We were losing i n f o r m a n t s faster t h a n a G r a n d J u r y i n v e s t i g a t i n g T e a m s t e r s . W e were beginning t o think that this s i m p l e t o o l w a s t h e b e a r e r o f s o m e t h i n g not unlike the M u m m y ' s C u r s e . F i n a l l y the E L B t o o k p i t y o n u s . R e a s o n i n g t h a t s i n c e he isn't a rigger b u t a builder, t h e c u r s e

s u p p e r t i m e t e a a n d w e c o u l d s e t t l e d o w n for s e r i o u s e a t i n g , a s g o o d i n the r a i n a s a t a n y o t h e r time.

A s t r o n g w i n d i n the tree t o p s a n d a v i c i o u s s q u a b b l e n e a r b y a m o n g the r a c c o o n s d i s t u r b e d u s a b o u t m i d n i g h t a n d p r o v i d e d e v i d e n c e that w e s h o u l d c h e c k the t a r p o v e r o u r s u p p l i e s a n d e n s u r e that the b o a t w a s safely a b o v e h i g h w a t e r . A l l w a s w e l l .

T h e o n l y facilities p r o v i d e d b y the g o v e r n m e n t a t all o f the sites w e v i s i t e d w e r e s i g n s w a r n i n g a g a i n s t the l i g h t i n g o f fires. T h e s e w e r e the a l t e r n a t i v e s t o t h e " K e e p O f f " signs p o s t e d e v e r y w h e r e e l s e i n the i s l a n d s . T h e r e w a s n o indication of potable water sources on either D ' A r c y o r R u m I s l a n d s b u t the S i d n e y S p i t P a r k provides water a n d P o r t l a n d Island is reported to h a v e a s o u r c e . Be s u r e to h a v e a s h o v e l for do-ity o u r s e l f pit t o i l e t s a n d a s u i t a b l e c o n t a i n e r i n w h i c h t o t a k e g a r b a g e b a c k t o c i v i l i z a t i o n for disposal.

A f l o o d tide a i d e d o u r p a s s a g e d o w n the east side of S i d n e y Island on o u r w a y to S i d n e y Spit M a r i n e Park. Discussions about sand in everything changed our destination to R u m I s l a n d , w h i c h i s c a l l e d Isle d e L i s M a r i n e P a r k . T h i s i s j o i n e d t o G o o c h I s l a n d b y a g r a v e l b a r that d o e s not a p p e a r t o b e c o v e r e d a t h i g h w a t e r but w o u l d probably be swept during a s t o r m . T h e g r a v e l b a r w a s a c o n v e n i e n t p l a c e for m o s t o f o u r gear a n d the b o a t b u t not the tent. W e l l a b o v e t h e beach, up a moderately steep r o c k slope, we f o u n d a g r a s s y c l e a r i n g i n the w o o d s for o u r tent. W h i l e w e w e r e e a t i n g l u n c h , a m i n k r a n a l o n g the water's edge from R u m Island t o G o o c h Island a n d t h e n his m o r e t i m i d c o m p a n i o n m a d e t h e c r o s s i n g in the high grass at the top of a bar b e h i n d u s . L a t e r , t h e y b o t h r e t u r n e d t h r o u g h the g r a s s . H e g r i n n e d , s a i d " S u r e " , a n d w e n t off t o r e g i s t e r . T h a t w o r k e d fine, b u t a s I c o n t e m p l a t e d h a n g i n g o n t o t h a t o a r for the e n t i r e f o u r - m i l e r e a c h a c r o s s t o S h i l s h o l e , I d e c i d e d t h a t t h e r e m u s t be a b e t t e r way. I had never s c a n d a l i z e d the spritsail while u n d e r w a y , but is w a s s u r p r i s i n g l y easy. U n d o i n g the s n o t t e r , I b r o u g h t d o w n t h e b a m b o o sprit a n d s t o w e d it. B r i n g i n g a line f r o m t h e p e a k of the s a i l a r o u n d the m a s t t o the w i n d w a r d s i d e , I t i e d i t t o the c l e w . W i t h the s a i l t h u s r e e f e d , t h e b o a t b a l a n c e d itself o u t a n d I w a s a m a z e d t o f i n d t h a t the o a r w a s n o l o n g e r n e c e s s a r y ! H e r r e s h o f f w a s right after a l l , I m u s e d , a n d I d i s c o v e r e d that by s h i f t i n g m y w e i g h t fore o r aft, I c o u l d m a k e t h e b o a t h e a d u p o r fall off the w i n d . I s o o n f o u n d m y p l a c e i n the b o a t w h e r e b y l e a n i n g f o r w a r d o r b a c k w a r d s , I c o u l d k e e p on c o u r s e . A s t r i d e the thwart, hands clasped on my knees, I marvelled at the e e r i e s e n s a t i o n o f t h e b o a t s a i l i n g itself r u d d e r l e s s a c r o s s the S o u n d , a n d m y m i n d b e g a n to e x p l o r e the possibilities of a lightweight r o w i n g a n d sailing boat u n e n c u m b e r e d with c e n t e r b o a r d or rudder. — W i l l Miller

Nature C o n s e r v a n c y C a m p a i g n of Special Interest to G u n k h o l e r s O n O c t o b e r 3 0 , the N a t u r e C o n s e r v a n c y a n n o u n c e d a multi-million dollar c a m p a i g n to s a v e the last v e s t i g e s o f o u r s t a t e ' s f a s t - d w i n d l i n g u n t o u c h e d w e t l a n d s . T h e b e s t o f t h e sites identified b y the W a s h i n g t o n S t a t e N a t u r a l Heritage p r o g r a m will b e p r e s e r v e d . T h e S t a t e h a s p l e d g e d $ 2 m i l l i o n t o t h i s effort, t h e C o n s e r v a n c y will c o m e up with $1 million. E v e n as the c a m p a i g n began, the C o n s e r v a n c y a n n o u n c e d a 75-acre preserve established at the tip o f S k o o k u m Inlet i n t h e s o u t h S o u n d . T h i s m o n t h they unveiled the n e w T a r b o o B a y p r e s e r v e n o r t h o f the t o w n o f Q u i l c e n e o n D a b o b Bay. B o t h areas contain plant a n d sandspit c o m m u n i t i e s o n c e c o m m o n i n Puget S o u n d but n o w a l m o s t c o m p l e t e l y g o n e . P r e s e r v a t i o n isn't l i m i t e d t o tidal w e t l a n d s : T h e C o n s e r v a n c y h a s also acquired 21 acres of B l a c k River marshland, " o n e o f the m o s t e x t e n s i v e , u n t o u c h e d r i p a r i a n e n v i r o n m e n t s i n t h e s t a t e , " a c c o r d i n g t h e the W S N H report.

L. F r a n c i s Herreshoff has a very c o n v i n c i n g d e s c r i p t i o n i n o n e o f his b o o k s o f h o w t o s a i l dinghies without r u d d e r s . S t e e r with an oar in the sculling notch, he recommends, or by trimming the boat with the weight of y o u r body. T h e s i m p l i c i t y o f t h a t a p p e a l e d t o m e , s o initially I d i d not m a k e a r u d d e r for m y W h i t e h a l l , b u t i n s t e a d c u t a s c u l l i n g n o t c h d e e p i n t o its t r a n s o m .

It sailed miserably. In o r d e r to steer with an o a r i n t h e n o t c h , I h a d t o sit i n the s t e r n s h e e t s . T h i s lifted t h e b o w u p o u t o f the w a t e r , a n d c o u p l e d with an already severe weather h e l m f r o m the spritsail, m a d e it impossible to k e e p out of irons w h e n t a c k i n g . I s p e n t a lot o f t i m e s c u l l i n g w i t h t h e o a r , t r y i n g t o b r i n g t h e b o w off t h e w i n d .

This program is so important to the C o n s e r v a n c y that i t i s t a k i n g a n u n p r e c e d e n t e d s t e p by a s k i n g m e m b e r s to write their legislators in s u p p o r t of the state's $2 million share, w h i c h must still be approved. Normally the C o n s e r v a n c y operates without government help, p u r c h a s i n g outright the e n v i r o n m e n t s it is trying to preserve. If y o u can't afford to donate m o n e y , d o n a t e a letter to y o u r state congress person.

In a s e c t i o n w e h a d t o o m i t for r e a s o n s o f s p a c e , h e g a v e a w o n d e r f u l e x p l a n a t i o n o f h o w y o u c a n get s e d u c e d into boatbuilding. B o b speaks of the m o m e n t s after s u r v e y i n g a S e a B i r d t h a t h e ' d s e e n for sale: "I spent most of the day c r a w l i n g about below d e c k s l o o k i n g for ' r o t ' , a n d f o u n d lots o f h o l e s a n d places that n e e d e d i m m e d i a t e a t t e n t i o n . O r t o p u t i t a n o t h e r w a y , o n the s u m m e r s o l s t i c e , t h e m o o n r i s e s o n the line o f the l a u n c h r a m p . S p o t on. Exactly. W e w e n t d o w n for m o o n r i s e o n the w i n t e r s o l s t i c e t o c h e c k a g a i n , b u t i t w a s t o o c l o u d y for lunar observations. In M e m o r y of M a x Schafer M a x spent his winters as skipper-for-hire in the C a r i b b e a n a n d s u m m e r s g u n k h o l i n g i n the S a n J u a n s . M a x w a s a sailor. He visited o u r annual F o u r t h of J u l y B o a t Festival several times, admiring the traditional small boats on display. M a x d e c i d e d t o b u i l d o n e for h i m s e l f . H e w a s building his h o u s e in A n a c o r t e s , in slow stages. The first part to be finished was the garage/workshop.
