Sports Youthful Girls’ X-C Team Learns Fast Turnover is inevitable in high school athletics. Cheshire girls’ cross country had to say goodbye to 17 seniors, including top runner Irene Kalbian, but Head Coach Rob Schaefer had a good feeling that depth could develop during the 2009 season. He was still surprised by what transpired. Cheshire posted an undefeated season and captured it’s first Housatonic Division title in four years. In another twist, the Rams (64 points) unseated fivetime defending champion Guilford (69 points) to win their first Southern Connecticut Conference crown since 1996. “Had you asked me at the beginning of the season, I thought that was a dream. I saw good things at Windham (Invite) and then the group just came together,” said Schaefer, who cracked the 200-win plateau. “We had six or seven strong runners. They were a dream to coach.” Freshman Kathleen Kalbian (third, 19:57.68) and senior Julie Hart (eighth, 20:12.28) earned MVP/All-SCC/All-Housatonic at Hammonasset State Park in Madison. Junior Sarah Fusco

(13th, 20:18.43), along with sophomores Amanda Chang (18th, 20:44.25) and Tesni Phillips (22nd, 20:52.27), also secured All-Housatonic. Sopho-

mores Victoria Wickenheiser (25th, 21:14.68) and Corrie Morris (42nd, 22:24.e8) also cracked the top 50. Cheshire was the first school to sweep the SCC varsity, junior varsity (52 points), and freshmen (23 points) races. “Beating Guilford was such a surprise,” reflected Schaefer. “They have a strong program.” Irene Kalbian embraced a division title as a freshman and four years later, her sister did the same. Kathleen was the top runner in every race, including the Class LL Championship (10th, 20:38) and State Open (43rd, 20:15). “We are very proud of her,” added Schaefer. “To do what she did as a freshman, is amazing.” Hart, a captain with classmates Jen Jackson and Hayley Bauer (Most Improved), was the second runner. She led as the lone senior varsity runner. “She did everything and kept us organized. We were as strong as Julie was,” Schaefer said. Fusco ran her best down the stretch. Senior Kristen Samuelson (153rd, 22:02) also ended with her first trip to the State Open. See LADY, page 5

Soccer Seniors Leave Lasting Impact

Charles McGovern/Cheshire Herald

Cailynn Harding controls the ball, while Kylee McIntosh looks on. Girls’ soccer head coach Tony Crane has seen time fly before his eyes. Four years ago, he started working with a freshmen class full of potential. Ten girls became team leaders last fall and then said goodbye to a program they consider almost a second family. “That was my toughest year yet because they’ve been here four years and so have I,” said Crane. “We lost some great players that played varsity for years.” The senior class extended a strong tradition. Cheshire outscored the opposition, 20-2, for it’s sixth Housatonic Division title (7-1; 14-5-1 record) in seven years. After losing both regular season games to Daniel Hand, the Rams battled the Tigers to a scoreless tie in the Southern Connecticut Conference Final. That co-championship was Cheshire’s fifth tourney title since 2003. The season ended shorter than they would have liked in the Class LL second round. Greenwich (ninth seed) shutout Cheshire (eighth seed), 2-0. The Rams out-shot the Cardinals (206), but at times during the season, Cheshire struggled to finish scoring chances. “It’s a gift to have a natural goal scorer. That’s a hard thing to find sometimes,” explained Crane. The versatility of senior Kylee McIntosh (Senior Bowl) allowed her to contribute at forward, midfield, and defense. She transitioned from defense to forward in pre-season and led the Rams with 10 goals, adding two assists. McIntosh helped mentor underclassmen such as sophomore Nicky Iadarola (two goals, assist), along with freshmen Kelsie Carlette (two goals, four assists), Claudia Martinez (two goals, two assists),

Jenna Hart (goal), and Nicole Stauffer (two goals). The Rams found themselves defensively when McIntosh was shifted back alongside classmates Casey Nowakowski (goal, assist) and Caitlyn Criscuolo (goal, two assists). Nowakowski, a senior captain with Marnee Dupont, and senior goalkeeper Erica Correa (Senior Bowl) started for four years. Correa compiled 11 shutouts in 2009. McIntosh (Marist College), Nowakowski (Fordham University), and Correa (University of New Hampshire) received AllState/All-Housatonic. “We tried Kylee in different positions, but she is best on defense,” Crane said. “Having her, Casey, and Caitlyn back there made us very strong at the end of the year.” The impact of junior Cailynn Harding (MVP) goes beyond numbers. Her ability to direct at mid-field opened opportunities for teammates. Harding and senior Amanda Roke each had three goals and four assists. “Cailynn Harding is probably the most underrated player in our league. For her to go under the radar the way she does is incredible,” added Crane. “All our girls will tell you that she is the heart of our mid-field.” Classmate Molly Dupont (Coaches Award; four goals, assists) made All-Housatonic for the first time. She scored the lone goal at Amity (clinched division title) and against Hamden (Class LL first round). Sophomore Elena Manke, a first year starter, netted two goals and received Most Improved Player. Depth was a key asset. Marnee See HARDING, page 4

Sports Cheshire Unseats Rival For Class LL Swim Title

eight seniors from the girls’ swim and dive team left a legacy. a 12-0 season secured the 265th consecutive dual meet victory (national record) last fall and cheshire won their 16th consecutive southern connecticut conference championship (1, 272.5 points), only one achievement caught them off-guard. no girl had experienced a class ll title and after finishing runner-up to Greenwich high school for the last four years, they wondered when their time would come. “it was really exciting for all of us. it was something that we didn’t think we could do at the beginning of the season,” said head coach ed aston. “it’s the best rivalry in the state of the connecticut, so anytime we can beat them (Greenwich), it’s a great honor.” southern connecticut state university hosted a celebration. cheshire compiled 875 points to unseat the cardinals (788.5 points) and earn their 26th state crown. the meet pitted depth against stars. Greenwich won eight events, including all three relays, to one for the rams but as has been the case for years, cheshire won with numbers. Between the 50- and 100-yard freestyle finals, the Rams had seven swimmers to Greenwich’s one. “i think we can beat anybody with their depth, except at the (state) Open where it requires stars,” explained aston. senior Kim jerome swam to the class ll title in the 200yard individual medley (2:06.18; third all-time at chs), earning all-american consideration for the second straight season. the 100-yard breaststroke produced the same result as 2008. jerome, who reached all-american each season, broke her own school record en route to finishing second (1:03.73) to Greenwich senior emily Weir. the cornell university-bound swimmer was runner-up (1:03.79) to Weir at the state Open, but she won the 200yard individual medley (2:06.64) again. cheshire was fourth (370.5 points) at the state Open. “she is the kind of young lady

that you love to coach,” added aston. “it’s the old adage that good things happen to good people.” captaining the team with classmates Melissa Metcalf, catherine Patrell, and jennifer thompson, jerome swam the 200-yard medley (Patrell, junior stephanie nguyen, sophomore Maggie Ptaszynski; third, 1:51.03) and 400-yard freestyle (sophomore jennifer tavares, juniors ally Barry and Karen novak; second, 3:36.93) relays at class ll. novak (500-yard freestyle, 5:06.36; 200-yard freestyle, fourth, 1:56.73) and tavares (200-yard freestyle, 1:54.16; 100-yard freestyle, third, 53.78) swam to second place, while Barry (50-yard freestyle, fourth, 25.14) joined them on the 200-yard freestyle relay (sophomore haley Payne; second, 1:40.81). “as a swimmer, she progressed tremendously,” stated aston, of tavares. “there is no question about her talent.” Tavares won her first individual scc titles for the 200- (1:58.02) and 500-yard (5:13.37) freestyles, to go with the 400-yard freestyle relay (freshman jenna cannata, Metcalf, novak; 3:43.14). novak (5:20.2), sophomore lexi Koukos (5:23.88), and junior Kelly dolyak (5:27.17) swept the top spots of the 500-yard swim. jerome won her fourth title in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.89) and cracked a minute during the 100-yard butterfly (second, 59.6). the 100-yard backstroke also benefited from improved depth. Freshman Meagan McGee (third, 1:04.73), Molly condron (seventh, 1:05.63), and tiffany Wang (ninth, 1:06.14) joined veterans like Barry (second, 1:04.16) and Patrell (fifth, 1:04.76). junior jasmine liu was also a Class LL qualifier. cannata won the 200-yard freestyle team (Ptaszynski, nguyen, novak; 1:43.58) and posted second (56.61) in the 100-yard freestyle. “i wasn’t sure how many spots they would get, but they improved tremendously by the end,” said See THOMPSON, page 12

the boys’ soccer team mapped out last fall in military terms. they would face several battles along the way, but head coach artur Branco was concerned with how they would come out of it. cheshire (10-5-2 record) rebounded from a 1-3-1 start to sustain a seven-game stretch without a loss. the streak included six wins and a 2-2 tie against unbeaten Guilford, who had previously

allowed one goal in nine games. “i was very pleased overall,” said Branco. “in my 15 years, without a doubt, this is my most improved team from start to finish. the kids were able to take what we preached at practice and applied those principles to the game. i thought that culminated with our (regular season finale) game against daniel hand. that was one of the best high school

Sports Football Reaches Top, Wins First Class LL Title In 12 Years

Pre-season football polls didn’t like Cheshire’s chances of returning to the Class LL Final in 2009. The Rams fell one win short against Glastonbury the year before and then graduated 22 players, including their quarterback and four offensive linemen. Cheshire used that doubt as a challenge. Behind 23 seniors, they completed their goal of a Class LL crown. An 11-1 record included redemption, a 20-6 semifinal victory in Glastonbury, and a storybook ending. The Rams outlasted unbeaten Staples 28-21 in overtime, winning the school’s seventh state title and first since 1997. Cheshire led 21-7 during the fourth quarter, yet the Wreckers scored twice to tie the game. Junior Mike Skibicki scored the winning touchdown from two yards out. Seniors Luke Scinto and Brian Havlicek forced a fumble, with Scinto securing the ball to clinch the title. “It was great experience to bring those guys back to that level,” said Head Coach Mark Ecke. “I liked how they responded to adversity. We got the touchdown and for the kids to make that play on defense, was tremendous.” The offense didn’t miss a beat. Given the opportunity to replace three-year starter Billy Ragone, senior quarterback Greg Palmer directed the spread offense expertly. Palmer (Class LL MVP) ran for 1,344 yards and 24 touchdowns while adding 1,066 passing yards and six scores. In a 4931 victory in Shelton, Palmer tied a school-record with five touchdowns and a career-high 180 yards. Classmates Dan Sweeney, Scinto, and Paul Tuscano joined

him on the All-Class LL/AllSouthern Connecticut Conference Division-I East first team. Palmer was also named to the First Walter Camp All-Connecticut High School team. “Greg did a phenomenal job. We had the same amount of yards as the year before, but it was a different offense,” explained Ecke. “We ran the ball more.” Sweeney provided options at tailback. He compiled 945 yards and eight touchdowns, catching 24 passes (two scores) for 160 yards. A captain with Tuscano and senior Craig Thorne, Sweeney shined during his final home game against Southington. He rushed for a personal-best 155 yards on Thanksgiving, receiving Overall and Offensive MVPs for a 24-11 victory. “Dan did a tremendous job offensively and defensively,” added Ecke. Skibicki also ran for 314 yards and five touchdowns behind the new offensive line. Scinto and classmate Steve Sutherland played tackle, while juniors Izear Hogan and Nick Ritchie were guards. Senior center Connor Hepler made the lines call. “That was our biggest corner coming into the season,” Ecke recalled. “We thought we had some good kids coming back. They did a great job.” Palmer threw to senior receivers. Havlicek (246 yards, two touchdowns), Brian DeBisschop (210 yards), Tuscano (206 yards, touchdown) and Ryan Connolly (101 yards) totaled 58 receptions. Junior quarterback Max Slade was versatile as a receiver (seven catches, 48 yards) and run-

ner (402 yards, four touchdowns). Sophomores Sebastian Little (six catches, 47 yards) and Jake Scinto (five catches, 77 yards; touchdown) also made an impact. “Those kind of skill position players don’t come around often,” said Ecke. The Rams built a stingy defense. Sweeney (107 tackles, interception), Thorne (54 tackles), and classmate Matt Sansone (53 tackles) led at linebacker. Junior Evan Gaudio exploded for a team-best 115 tackles, while sophomore Dylan Baumgardner (68 tackles, interception) Defensive MVP on Thanksgiving. “His play as the season went on was more impressive. I can’t wait to see what he can do for us next year,” stated Ecke, of Gaudio. Sutherland (54 tackles), Scinto (31 tackles), Hepler (56 tackles), and Skibicki (24 tackles) each supplied two sacks up front. Havlicek (four interceptions) and Connolly (two interceptions) made 44 tackles in the secondary. Tuscano (56 tackles; interception) played free safety and when he missed the playoffs with mononucleosis, Palmer added two interceptions at Glastonbury. Cheshire’s only loss, 40-36, came against number one ranked Notre Dame (Class L Champion). Sophomore Kyle Pulek booted a 42-yard field goal for a 3634 lead, but the Green Knights scored one more time with 13.7 seconds left. Pulek made six field goals and punted as well. “Since I’ve been here, Kyle is the best kicker and a special talent,” said Ecke.

hitters off the net and put pressure on passers. “Our serve this year was our offense. If you looked at how we came back in games, it was by ripping hard serves,” explained Bavone. Dorsey, a senior captain with Gina Gongaware, fired a teambest 41 aces and distributed 359 assists at setter. Dorsey showed toughness while playing the second half of the season with a broken foot. Sophomore Gina Buzzelli set in Dorsey’s absence and contributed behind the service line, while junior Ashia Wright showed versatility between setting and hitting outside. “We were a different team when she (Dorsey) was setting,” stated Bavone. “We had to pull her from being a defensive specialist. I felt bad for how she had to end the season with an injury.” Gongaware (Most Outstanding Defender Player/All-Housatonic) was the dig leader (334) for the second straight season, along with breaking a single-season record for pass attempts (1,208). Seniors Kelley Ryan (Most Improved) and Jade Bystrom added to the passing group. Junior Ashley Zane supplied 134 digs. “We had to have her against hard hitters,” said Bavone, of Gongaware. “She controlled that backcourt.” Senior Alessandra Pulit and junior Breslyn Goodison contributed on the front line. The season didn’t come without obstacles. Cheshire suffered a pair of 3-2 losses to Jonathan Law and Sacred Heart Academy. They got some redemption during the SCC tournament. Seeded eighth, they upset top-seeded Sacred Heart (3-1) and Guilford (3-1) to reach the SCC Final. Cheshire pushed Law (third seed) to the end before losing 3-2 again. “We like to say that we own that (SCC) tournament,” said Bavone. “It shows that we stumbled, but are not going away.” Cheshire (16th seed) opened the Class LL tournament with a 3-1 win over Danbury. They lost by the same score at Jim Brandolini/Cheshire Herald top-seeded, Southington. Gina Gongaware celebrates a point.

High expectations often follow continued success in athletics. Graduation impacted the girls’ volleyball program last fall, yet they didn’t want to take a step back. The Rams (15-8 record) defended their Housatonic Division title, sharing the honor with Shelton, and reached the Southern Connecticut Conference Final for the eighth straight year. “It was frustrating because six of our eight losses were five-game matches (0-6). We were right there and could have beaten those teams, but they did end up going far in tournaments,” said Head Coach Sue Bavone. “I thought we made a lot of improvements.” Cheshire had a new-look offensively without graduated middle hitters Nora Bahgat and Leah Hirsch. Senior Grace Schreiber stepped up. She led in kills (224) and blocks (89), earning AllHousatonic for the first time. Schreiber and senior Taylor Dorsey shared Most Outstanding Offensive Player “One of the reasons why Grace was the Coaches Award (recipient) was that she came back focused this year,” added Bavone. “She gave us a presence in the middle and, while not as powerful as Nora, she impacted the game.” Junior Emily Werth (164 kills, 174 digs) and sophomore Kelly Gunneson (151 kills, 31 aces) hit outside. Offense was generated by service. Not only did Cheshire compile aces, their power kept

Sports Seniors Loved Field Hockey disappointment was evident in the aftermath of the 2009 class L field hockey quarterfinals last fall. cheshire (seventh seed; 115-1-1 record) rallied from 1-0 and 2-1 deficit against secondseeded Pomperaug, carrying a 15-6 penalty-corner advantage into overtime. however, it took just 25 seconds for the Panthers to tally the golden goal and end cheshire’s season in southbury. the loss was especially heartbreaking for nine seniors. Many started playing together in middle school and their impact was felt resoundingly inside the program. “at the end of the season, i was definitely sad for them,” said head coach eileen Gallagher. “But, seeing them in school, i’m very proud for the way they work together. i’ve never seen a class get along as well as this one did.” captains lauren hague, emily O’halloran, and Katharine eddy each led in a different way. hague keyed the offense as a scorer (15 goals) and distributor (eight assists), representing the top scorer for the second straight year. she tallied a hat trick to lead the rams to their second victory (3-0) over hamden in the class l first round. Hague (All-State/Allsouthern connecticut conference first team/Offensive Player of the year/MVP) scored game-winning goals, many of which were assisted by senior mid-fielder Brittany Gladish (all-scc second team). the primary in-bounds passer on penalty corners, Gallagher compared Gladish to an unsung hero. read about hague’s college decision on page 14. year) and senior goalkeeper Kailey Farrell were the only returning starters on defense. sophomore anna Marcucilli (rookie of the year), along with juniors danielle desmarais and nicole caputo, developed together in a revamped unit. O’halloran also scored her first goal to tie the score 2-2 at Pomperaug. “you never worry with emily because she always does right. she is so calming,” stated Gallagher. Farrell (all-state second team/ All-SCC first team) compiled six shutouts, despite missing three games to mononucleosis. she made 13 saves during a scoreless tie at Greenwich. her 11 saves also helped the rams earn their first home victory (1-0) over Branford since 2003. senior forward reni Benson cracked the varsity lineup for the first time and received Most improved Player. senior allison Fountain and junior alayna dePaolo provided aggressiveness and speed up front as well. sophomore forward lauren anderson showed versatility by substituting for Farrell in goal, while junior mid-fielder Jessica Sudock shifted back from forward and scored the game-winner against Branford. “reni came out of no where this year. she has such great speed and if you can incorporate that, it is amazing,” Gallagher said. senior jacqulene Brzozowski received the P.l.a.y.e.r. award. eddy, a three-year starter at midfield, didn’t play due to injury. “she was another coach for us,” reflected Gallagher. “I appreciated her being around.”

Lady Rams Win First SCC Title Since 1996 Season continued from page 2 after missing the 2008 state Open by one wild card spot, the girls were excited to qualify again and proceeded to finish eighth (269 points). they also placed fifth (166 points) at the Class LL.

“it is hard to stay consistently good. if you can get to the state Open, you have accomplished something,” explained schaefer, who returns six varsity runners. “We should be good again next year.”

cheshire boys’ cross country set lofty goals. The Rams finished three points short of the new england championship in 2008, so there was motivation for runners to train hard throughout the off-season. that dedication laid the groundwork for a strong season and, while not accomplishing all their goals, head coach jim Bennett appreciates the effort. captains curt Brown and sergey lukashenko were among 16 seniors. “i was glad that they took ownership of the team. this was their year and they all stepped up,” said Bennett. “it was a deep group.” cheshire earned six consecutive wins before falling to Fairfield Prep on Senior Day. A bid for the housatonic division title was snapped by rival amity one week later. cheshire avenged both of those losses by placing third (106 points) at the southern connecticut conference championship. the program hadn’t defeated amity in seven years and they clipped them again at the class ll meet (fourth, 139 points). “We were motivated for those

yet still finished with a team-best nine goals and 21 points. he tallied his first career hat trick and added two assists (three total) in a 9-0 shutout of sheehan. “alex was our leader up front. it was nice to see his growth,” said Branco, who felt junior Greg leonetti (four goals, assist) was extremely vital. “i don’t think the average spectator or Greg knows how valuable he is. he is a very unique player and plays well with his back to the goal.” Freshman nick Berardi (goal, two assists) started up top. sophomores Mike ranando (assist), Michael carbone (two goals, two assists), and david Bannon (goal), along with freshman sam donahue (two goals) and junior Brendan Pier (goal), added points. cheshire (17th seed) lost 2-0 to host Masuk (16th seed) in the Class LL first round.

Seniors Jen Jackson (pole vault; eight feet) and alisha Wright (long jump; 15 feet, six inches) finished runner-up. Chang placed third in the 3,200-meters (12:19.5). aliotta also shot put at the hartford Public high school (43 feet, 11.75 inches; meet record on jan. 9) and yale university (42 feet, 7.25 inches; jan. 15-16) invitationals. the rams are striving for their third straight southern connecticut conference title on Feb. 5. Boys’ Indoor Track and Field Senior captains: Ryan Connolly, Mike Gargiulo, Sanjay Raha change is widespread through the boys’ indoor track and field program. the rams graduated a number of veteran contributors and jim Bennett took over as head coach. One common goal is reaching the state level. cheshire made progress during the housatonic championship, in which they placed runnerup (62 points) to amity (131.5 points) for the third straight season. sophomore newcomer jake Scinto won the high jump (five feet, 10 inches) and long jump (21 feet, nine inches), the latter of which broke a school record from 1974. scinto (55-meters, 6.6) also joined juniors Orlando Marin (long jump; 20 feet, six inches)

Gargiulo helped the 4x800-meter relay (lukashenko, seniors ralph sacco and dan Harris; 8:42.07) finish third. Boys’ basketball Senior captains: Brian DeBisschop, Dan Manke. cheshire has found themselves in many competitive games this winter, yet slow starts and inconsistent foul shooting hampered them out of the gate. three losses were decided by three points or less. the coaches emphasized learning from the past and cheshire has won their last two games to improve to 4-7 overall. Sports Cheshire Athletes Transition To Many Indoor Competitions continued from page six “dan and Brian scored the scoring in the beginning of the year, but guys are stepping up to add balance,” explained head coach dan lee. “(junior) Matt Bailey has recovered from his wrist injury and is coming into his own at the point guard position.” they are still alive for a run to the housatonic title and their fourth straight class ll berth. Manke and deBisschop have led at both ends. deBisschop, a forward/center, is versatile to go inside and step out. classmates john Kubilus, Brian havlicek, and Mike hathaway, along with sophomore nate howard, join deBisschop in a tall front line. Manke is a lethal shooter, netting five three-pointers in consecutive games. he exploded for a career-high 32 on dec. 21, as Cheshire picked up their first win (72-69) at West haven. Graduation has changed the rotation in the backcourt. senior todd heritage returned from a threeyear hiatus. junior Greg leonetti, sophomore Kevin adams, and Bailey have started. Bailey had a career-high 18 points at sheehan. Girls’ Basketball Senior captains: Lauren Hague, Kelly Riddle, Kristen Samuelson For the second straight season, Cheshire dropped their first five games against top scc competition. the difference this winter is the youth of the lineup. cheshire (3-9 record) hopes to turn things around in the second half. “i feel good. experience has helped the younger kids,” said head coach sarah Mik. “We still

want to make the state tournament and win the housatonic division.” turnover has created opportunity for players in the frontcourt. In her first season as a starter, junior center julia strobel has been the top scorer and rebounder. sophomore lauren deBisschop and freshman Molly jalbert are playing heavily inside. “she is a good post player and great off the dribble,” stated Mik, of strobel. the captains and sophomore Maria Blois form a versatile backcourt. riddle tallied a careerhigh 17 points during a 52-45 loss to host hamden on jan. 20. cheshire did lose experience when samuelson suffered a stress fracture. junior danielle desmarais, sophomores sarah domschine and anna Marcucilli, and freshmen lauren como and emma Gorham, are playing varsity minutes. como scored a career-high nine points during the second half of a 39-29 victory at amity. “Kristen will be out for three to six weeks. it’s tough because she does a lot of little things for us,” added Mik. Boys’ Swimming and Diving Senior captains: Dan Sweeney, Jordan Attwood smaller numbers due to graduation hasn’t stopped cheshire from starting quickly. the rams (6-4 record) went unbeaten in december, but starting with Brookfield and sacred heart, the strength of their schedule went up. “even though we lost (on jan. 8), i thought we swam tough in that tri-meet,” explained head

coach Fran connolly. “We have to continue to work hard because the season is going to get really tough for us.” junior dan Mongillo and freshman Greg han have emerged as the top point-scorers. Both have shown versatility across the board and contributed to relays. “he is a great worker and competitor,” said connolly, of Mongillo. “Greg han is a real talented kid. We are glad he is able to contribute for us.” seniors ethan Medling and Miguel rodriguez lapman swim relays, along with sprinting in the 50- and 100yard freestyles. cheshire did suffer a blow when sweeney had shoulder surgery this month. he hopes to return by the southern “hopefully, we get him back by March for sprint relays,” added connolly. senior jackson Getchell has progressed in distance, while the sophomore class has also taken another step forward. eric chen, ray chen, andrew davison, justin Go, Brendan smalec, and erin Williams have add key points individually and on relays. attwood has recovered from an diving injury. classmate Mike topitzer and junior Matt annenberg join him on an experienced unit, led by first-year coach Kelly Mohr. Ice Hockey Senior captains: Drew Cunningham, Mike Diglio, Nate Gaudio, J.D. Keegan tight games have frustrated the rams so far. cheshire (4-4 record) dropped three games by a single goal and lost 6-4 to scc division ii rival amity. however on jan. 23, they put it all together at north haven. a 6-0 shutout was the first win over the Indians in many years.

“hopefully, it gives us the spark we need for the rest of the season,” added head coach jim riccitelli. cheshire returned a strong senior class from last season’s scc/ division ii championships. Mike devine is the top scorer for the second straight season, tallying 12 goals and two assists. he has scored the team’s first goal in six of eight games. “Mike offensively is a spark p l u g . W e ’ v e asked him to take it up a notch defensively and he is doing that,” riccitelli said. Diglio (five goals, three assists) and Gaudio (three goals, three assists) have played the same line for years, while juniors Matt dupont (four assists) and ryan Powers (four goals, four assists) have seen increased roles. Freshman Owen Powers, ryan’s brother, has added two goals and three assists. cheshire uses three to four lines to compile a shot advantage. cunningham, Keegan, and colby Olin add senior experience on defense. sophomores john cunningham and spencer hackett have contributed to the first three shutouts for classmate tyler carbone. With the graduation of three-year starter George donnarumma, carbone has compiled a .913 save percentage in goal. junior jason Bailin and freshman scott romano have played too. “so far, the kids are handling it

well. We are competing every day and i think that is a bonus for our program,” added riccitelli. Wrestling Senior captains: Kyle Copes, Jake Reid, Matt Topitzer a combination of experience and youth has helped cheshire more than double last season’s win total (8-7 record). after reaching the state Open in each of the last two years, junior jed cervero (119-125 pounds; 22-1 record) and copes (171-189 pounds; 21-1 record) lead a deeper lineup. copes (new Milford) and Cervero (Fairfield Warde) have each won a tournament. “The are doing great,” reflected head coach don Miller. “they are getting beat up with nagging injuries like everyone in the state. tournaments do help them get accumulated to strong competition.” topitzer (160 pounds), jason tapp (145-152 pounds), reid (215 pounds to heavyweight), and classmate nate st. Martin (189-215 pounds) are consistent contributors during their senior season. juniors scott tomlinson (130 pounds) and andrew rodgers (135 pounds) have grown as three-year starters. cheshire is building beyond this season. Freshmen torin ravenburg (112 pounds), Kyle Wood (119 pounds), dan Massucci (135 pounds), tim homan (140 pounds), josh hunihan (145 pounds), and ryan leclerc (heavyweight) have earned spots. The Rams want to finish the scc division ii season unbeaten. Cheerleading Senior captains: Brittany Robles, Danielle Boisvert the rams are quite busy. not only do 24 cheerleaders provide spirit at boys’ basketball games, but they are also preparing to display their skills against rival squads. cheshire will compete at the southern connecticut conference (Feb. 6; north haven See SEWERSKY, page 8

siders a tough routine. Boys’ Skiing Captains: senior Alex Sewersky, junior Jochai Mor underclassmen have added critical depth to the 2010 season. cheshire (7-2 record) has eight united states ski and snowboard Association skiers, five of whom are freshmen. sewersky, a fouryear letter winner and overall winner on jan. 21, is the top skier for the second straight year. “he is skiing with a great deal of confidence. Boys’ lacrosse head coach rich Pulisciano feels firmly about the value of senior leadership. Fortunately for the rams, they will have experience in spades. six of the top seven scorers are seniors and cheshire also returns a stingy defense from last year’s 14-6 season. “Obviously, any coach would say it’s a good feeling to have a lot of kids coming back,” said Pulisciano. “From the time they walk into the locker room, i’m going to say we have a lot back and it’s up to them. We don’t want to get cocky and think people will lay down for us. We have to work hard and be level-headed.” chemistry is displayed through a senior trio on attack. todd heritage (all-american/all-state/ all-southern connecticut conference first team; 66 goals, 58 assists), nick carisio (60 goals, 18 assists), and Mike devine (37 goals, 16 assists) were the top scorers in 2009. devine was a key addition and joined carisio as all-scc second team, while classmate Michael jordan (16 goals, 10 assists) received the

Senior attack Todd Heritage has committed to Bucknell University. Most improved-Offense award. “each year, todd has got better. When we close the records, nick will be up there as well,” reflected Pulisciano. “We have kids that understand the system. you can be more aggressive in preseason because these kids have been there before.” heritage, a four-year starter, supplied 124 points to break his older brother’s single-season record (121; 2002 graduate Brad heritage). todd was the only connecticut junior to be named all-american. devine, along with classmates nate Gaudio and joe Klemenz, joined him as ‘super junior’ selections. heritage has posted 274 career points (146 goals, 128 assists), ranking second all-time at chs. defensive depth is key. Gaudio (Middlebury college) is coming off a breakout season, in which he compiled 255 saves as a first-year starting goalkeeper. classmate colin nesdale added 37 saves. junior torrey Martone and senior mid-fielder Matt Sansone collected all-state second team/

All-SCC first team. Seniors Connor underwood, connor hepler, Klemenz, and sophomore dylan Baumgardner possess strong stick skills. the rams bonded together after injuries to 2009 graduates Kevin dykty and captain nolan Farrell. “We return a lot of poles. it makes life easier when you have two great goalies,” Pulisciano added. captain dan reynolds and tyler Arpin graduated at mid-field. seniors nick Guarino (seven goals, 16 assists), colby Olin (11 goals, five assists), Brian Havlicek (seven goals, four assists), dan sweeney (two goals), chris Barney (two assists), and jake reid (assist) return to the team. the rams hope experience helps reverse their recent fortunes. Fairfield Prep has beaten them in the last two scc Finals (10-6; 2009) and Class L first rounds (12-7; 2009), earning a three-peat for the championships. “i think it’s time we put ourselves into that position,” stated Pulisciano, of claiming a title.

Sports Boys’ V-Ball Team Is Hungry For State Title

years of hard work culminated in a breakthrough season for boys’ volleyball last spring. the rams went undefeated to capture their first Southern Connecticut Conference regular season and tournament titles, along with reaching the Class L semifinals for the first time. the journey ended with a 3-0 sweep to southington, but that experience has them eager to pick right back up in 2010. “i think the next step is building on that success,” said head coach sue Bavone. “hopefully, more guys start taking notice at a younger age. We are going to start a Parks and recreation program for boys.” senior Mike clark, Pete stephan, and steve sutherland will captain an experienced team. But, intangibles can’t be measured. six graduates led the rams to an 14-9 record, including 6-0 in five-game matches. “it will be tough to replace the demeanor of those guys. you win those five-game matches because of the composure of your seniors,” explained Bavone. cheshire twice defeated Xavier in five games last year, the second of which played out in the scc Final. Fairfield Warde/Ludlowe (second seed) had swept the rams in both regular season meeting and took a 2-0 lead in the class L quarterfinals before Cheshire (10th seed) fought back, to upset

them in five games. The Rams also picked up the program’s first victories over shelton. joe Ortowski, a graduated captain with Brian choplick and john shea, received scc MVP. “From a volleyball standpoint, we will be excellent. you won’t know how these guys will react until you start playing under pressure,” stated Bavone. “they are more mature now. i want them to be emotional and fired up, but have to channel it in the right direction.” despite the loss of Ortowski, cheshire has plenty of hitting options. stephan (139; 101 blocks, 11 aces), sutherland (123; 62 blocks), senior steve li (98; 27 blocks, 147 digs, 18 aces), junior Joe Bahgat (152; 48 blocks; Allscc second team), and sophomore nate howard (103; 26 blocks) fired over 100 kills last season. sutherland recovered from a wrist injury to spark the team down the stretch. senior jordan attwood added 17 kills and nine blocks. “this is going to be the tallest team we’ve ever had,” added Bavone, who expects a big blocking team. “that can be helpful or hurtful to your defense depending on how they react to the ball.” clark (all-scc second team; 123 digs) and classmate jochai Mor will anchor the defense without choplick and shea. sopho-

However, she suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury during a 20-8 loss to host avon in the Class L first round. “By the time she starts practicing, she will have had nine months of rehabilitation. Katharine is a driven person and, while an acl is a serious injury, it wouldn’t surprise me if she came back stronger because she is a hard worker,” Warburton explained. Farrell (all-state second team/ All-SCC first team) combines a similar skill set in mid-field. She will play at Monmouth university. “It makes it difficult to defend when you have another top scorer,” stated Warburton. Dupont (23 goals, five assists) enjoyed a breakout season last year, including a career-high four goals during the 14-13 victory over daniel hand. she is the lone returning attack player, with the graduation of captain ali Zelisko and Becca Mccormick. “alyssa is a hard worker. if you can get everyone in that mind-set, you have a great team,” said Warburton. classmate Mariah McKechnie has added versatility and started as a sophomore. junior jessica sudock contributed six goals and two assists in 2009. “Mariah brings a lot of experience back to the table,” explained Warburton. “she (McKechnie) is a player that can play offense, defense, and mid-field.” the sophomore class made jim Brandolini/cheshire herald an impact too. alexis sansone

Girls’ lacrosse won’t lack for offensive firepower this spring. the rams broke a single-season record for goals (276) last year and with four of their top six scorers back, there is chemistry. however with graduation, defense will be less experienced. “We have our top two scorers back that had more goals combined than anybody at cheshire high school. that is huge,” stated head coach dan Warburton. “at the same time, our goal total shows that we had depth last year.” Katharine eddy (81 goals, 38 assists) and Kailey Farrell (72 goals, nine assists) represent a top scoring tandem, joining alyssa dupont as senior captain. eddy is coming off a record-setting season, in which she became the first player to crack 80 goals and 30 assists. she broke a chs record with nine goals at Branford, along with contributing from different areas of the field. “she was one goal short of

Girls’ Golf Continues Progression The Cheshire girls’ golf team makes a general goal of improving on the previous year. That determination has taken them to territory never seen at CHS. The Rams produced a 17-5 record (school-best) last spring, earning consecutive State Open appearances for the first time. “We only hope to do better,” said Head Coach John Williams, who is entering his sixth season. “We went from a 90 stroke differential to 59 last year. We have taken off nine strokes a kid for matches in five years.” Despite graduating two leaders of the varsity team, Cheshire likes their chances to return to the State

a stellar career with All-SCGGL. Junior Megan Aitro placed second in stroke average last season and Williams feels that freshman Andra Frappier will make an immediate impact. Frappier ranks in the top five of her age group in Connecticut. “She played in a women’s amateur tournament and took 11th overall,” stated Williams. “Just from her personality, she is very friendly and can’t wait to play on the team.” Junior Emma Velcofsky enjoyed a breakthrough match last spring, shooting a 49 at Mercy. Cheshire took third place (374) See GOLFERS, page 15

Open. Seniors Abby Ehrlich, Brittany Robles, and Brynna Rao captain a strong roster. Ehrlich captained the 2009 team with graduate Molly Gleeton, while Robles (All-Southern Connecticut Girls’ Golf League Honorable Mention) earned Most Improved Player for the second time. “Brynna is another four-year player that has really improved her scores,” added Williams. “(Senior) Jess Rotell can shoot in the mid to low 50s. We have the personnel.” The Rams will have a new number one player for the first time in three years. Caitlin Victory ended

Sports Cheshire Reloads For Track And Field

despite stepping down from the helm of the boys’ indoor track and field program, outdoor head coach tom lewoc is still paying close attention this winter. Many athletes compete indoors, so they

are in good shape for the spring season. “For an outdoor coach, it’s crucial that they come from another sport,” said lewoc. lewoc envisions a 2010 team in transition. the rams produced a 8-3 season last year and then graduated a stellar senior class that contributed in a range of events. cheshire placed third in the housatonic division championship, adding 12th place through the southern connecticut conference. “the last couple years, we’ve had great sprints and hurdles. now we have great jumps and distance to lead us,” lewoc explained. sophomore jake scinto and junior Orlando Marin form a top jumping tandem. scinto broke the chs long-jump record indoors and he added a second housatonic title for the high jump. Marin will also figure into the long and triple jump. “jake is already having a great indoor allen Paul/cheshire herald season. if Orlando Junior Sean Mueller placed third in the Class stays healthy, we LL 3,200-meters (9:32.24) last year. will be very good in

jumps,” said lewoc. scinto teamed with graduates Marcus Wright (captain), joe Gagliardi (captain), and Greg schrier on the 4x100-meter relay (44.29) that won the 2009 housatonic title. Wright, a multi-time housatonic champion for the 100- and 200-meters, ranks atop the school record books. Varun roy (captain; housatonic champion in 110- and 300-meters) and Pat cuppernull also graduate experience from the hurdles. Middle to long distance are returning strengths while cheshire builds depth. senior sanjay raha will run the 400-meters and, like scinto, is in the midst of a strong indoor season. “i think the biggest thing is confidence. He knows he has to step up for us,” explained lewoc. “i want to build from the 400 (-meters) down including a 4x100and 4x400- (meter) relay.” junior sean Mueller, a state Open qualifier in the 3,200-meters, leads a veteran group of distance runners in the 1,600and 3,200-meters. seniors curt Brown and Mike Gozzo can also figure into a 4x800-meter relay. “i think you can see a mature athlete. he is a key point-scorer for us,” stated lewoc, of Mueller. junior aaron stevenson returns leadership to the throwing unit. cheshire graduated dan Mazzacane (housatonic champion) and Mike haskell. “We have experience in shot put, but have to build a group of javelin and discus throwers,” added lewoc.

Mor and junior colin Bogrette, along with freshmen Mike harris and Matt Bossy, add key points to the varsity team. Freshman andrew Brown is expected to return from injury, too. Girls’ Skiing Senior captains: Katharine Eddy, Mariah McKechnie

sophomores susan Kostin and anna Frenzilli, along with freshman jenna Pogozelski, have been top 10 finishers. After Kostin and Frenzilli were the top racers last year, ajelet Mor has also enjoyed a strong start to her freshman season. seniors Megan Walton, emily selzer, and McKechnie have also scored this winter. since injuries kept eddy and freshman Kelsie carlette out of the lineup, the lady rams (1-4 record) are building depth. “they are skiing well and working hard,” added Brimberg.

Thompson Tops Class LL continued from page 3 aston, of his freshman class. Freshman taylor deubel, along with juniors Megan Mostoller and Megan aitro, followed jerome in the breaststroke. Morgan schwenn and sarah schulefand joined thompson as senior divers for first-year coach Margaret rodgers. thompson defended her SCC title (417.25),

won her first Class LL crown (426.5), and placed fourth (423) at the state Open. schwenn (14th, 282.1; scc runner-up, 323.35), Schulefand (18th, 266.1), and junior Bridget carmichael (ninth, 316.65) were also Class LL qualifiers. “It was terrific for her to transition to a new coach,” recalled aston. “she responded really well like you want a senior to.”

New Team On The Court the 2009 all-state tennis banquet was historic for the girls’ tennis team. Five players, a schoolrecord, excelled at the state Open and were recognized. the event brought closure for one of the school’s strongest classes. head coach Mike rahn knew turnover was coming this spring. cheshire graduated eight players, seven of which started for at least two years. senior captains Maggie tooley and hillary dutton, along with junior Olivia amato, are returning starters in 2010. While this kind of change

would lower expectations for some schools, the rams are fortunate to have depth in town. “i’m excited to start with a group where i don’t know where girls are playing,” explained rahn. “We won’t have the same talent as last year, but the girls will have the opportunity to compete for spots in the lineup.” tooley, the only returning allstate player, had played number two doubles with graduated captain Morgan hirt for the last two years. that partnership culmiSee RAHN, page 15

Sports Girls Seek Title Defense

the girls’ outdoor track and field team reached a long awaited moment in 2009. it had been 10 years since they hoisted the housatonic division title. cheshire tied amity and shelton for the dual-meet title and won their tournament (109.33 points) at chs. the victory rewarded the graduating class, including captains taylor Meltzer, lynelle schmidt, and christine hedden. “that will be our goal again to win the housy,” said head coach Barbara hedden. “it will be a younger team, so we have to rebuild our skills.” cheshire graduated experience in hurdles and field events. However, the most accomplished thrower in school history returns for one more season. rachel aliotta, a senior captain with sam alberino and julie hart, has been breaking the school shot put record since her freshman year and went undefeated through connecticut for the last two years. the Monmouth university-bound thrower moved into second place alltime for discus last spring and captured her first New England championship (shot put; 43 feet, 6.5 inches). Aliotta (MVP-Field) won the housatonic (42 feet, three inches; 114 feet, six inches)/southern connecticut conference (40 feet; 107 feet, nine inches) shot put and discus titles, topping the class ll (42 feet, three inches) and state Open (44 feet, three inches) shot put. she was the class ll (108 feet, two inches) and state Open (109 feet) runner-up in discus. “she still has room to grow. i expect rachel to break the shot put record again and come around more in discus,” explained hedden, of her 2009 MVP (Field). hedden hopes that junior Breslyn Goodison (Class LL qualifier)

can replace Meltzer in javelin. cheshire has depth from sprints to distance running. junior ashia Wright (MVP-track; class ll qualifier) is coming off a strong first season, during which she won the housatonic 100- (13.28) and 200-meters (27.44). she joined alberino (housatonic runner-up; 13.62) on the victorious 4x100-meter relay (52.13), returning to place second in the scc 100-meters (13.08). “she (Wright) did extremely well in her first season out. now that she has confidence, I think all the little things will come together for her this spring,” added hedden. “sam will be an excellent captain. she works extremely hard and has the experience to lead our 4x100-meter relay.” junior sarah Fusco, another class ll runner, took her first Housatonic title in the 400-meters (1:01.88). seniors Meghan Fackler, caitlyn criscuolo, Morgan schwenn, taylor altieri, along with sophomores tesni Phillips and amanda chang, can fill into 4x400- and 4x800-meter relays. Hart (Class LL qualifier) exemplifies versatility. She can run from 800- to 3,200-meters while competing for the 4x800-meter team. “julie is the leader of our distance pack,” hedden said. hedden expects to earn points in pole vault. junior Megan Mostoller (tie for fifth; seven feet) joined seniors jen jackson (second; eight feet, six inches) and sarah schulefand (third; eight feet) in the housatonic top 10. junior emily Winch and julie chen will replace 2009 graduate lavanya rajendran in hurdles. christine hedden led in long and triple jumps, but senior alisha Wrights has scc experience. “there are a lot of young athletes who are learning the skill events, too,” stated hedden. The Rams finished top 10 of the SCC (fifth), Class LL (sixth), and state Open (tie for 10th). sophomore Kelly Gunneson is pictured in the long jump.

Sports Hague Ready To Swing At UMass by Greg Lederer herald staff Cheshire senior field hockey player lauren hague had a tough finish to her high school career on nov. 13. the rams rallied to force overtime in the Class L quarterfinals, but second-seeded Pomperaug High School needed just 25 seconds to net the game-winning goal 3-2 and end Cheshire’s 11-51-1 season. hague, who assisted on classmate emily O’halloran’s tying goal (2-2), took solace in the fact that her team left everything on the field. University of Massachusetts head coach justine sowry was on hand to watch her performance. “i actually didn’t know she was there until after the game,” said hague, a captain with O’halloran and classmate Katharine eddy. “i was surprised, but it felt good to know i was important enough for her to come watch me play.” sowry and hague chatted briefly, but that snapshot did impact her future. hague has commited to play for uMass and will sign her letter of intent soon. a division i program, uMass (12-9 record) defeated three nationallyranked teams last fall and finished in the top 25. in an interesting twist, uMass also capped their fall season with an overtime loss. they fell short 2-1 to top-seed the university of richmond in the atlantic-10 Conference semifinals. “It’s definitely a lot of weight off my shoulders to be accepted

to college and get into a really good program. it shows that if i work hard, i can do what i want,” added hague, who looked at Boston and Quinnipiac universities. hague was excited about Bu last summer and didn’t start looking at uMass until chs head coach eileen Gallagher mentioned it in september. sowry and hague exchanged emails in november, setting up her visit for the weekend after thanksgiving. “i went to classes with a few of the girls and it was really cool because they had the same courses,” recalled hague. “We went to lunch and a hockey game. i stayed with them and they are a great bunch of girls.” hague played varsity for four years at chs, but feels her junior year is when she fell in love with field hockey and wanted to play in college. it is no coincidence that is the same year Gallagher took over. The Rams ended fiveyear skids to southern connecticut conference foes Branford and daniel hand in the process of winning their first 11 games under Gallagher. “she is a really good coach in terms of making you love the game,” explained hague. “it’s such a complex game that takes a lot of thinking. you always have to be one step ahead. there are no set plays, so you have to make things up as you go along. i like that creativity.” hague was a driving force for the resurgence of the chs program, posting a team-best point total in each of the last two years.

she was rewarded with all-state/ all-southern connecticut conference first team. Her versatility to score and distribute the ball fit aptly in mid-field. “Mid-field is definitely a big part of the offense. you carry the ball up the field and do a lot of transfers,” hague said. “you are also guarding the mids. it’s good to get to see all of the positions.” While some athletes are not comfortable taking the big shot, hague craves the challenge and plays without fear. she possesses a hard drive and displayed that power on penalty corners. “i love having the pressure put on me. i like the challenge of taking that big stroke,” explained hague. her game-winning goals put a smile on the face of Gallagher. “she was a heavy hitter and came up big for us,” said Gallagher. “it’s good for the program to see her play division i and gives the younger players something to aim for.” as a senior tri-captain of the girls’ basketball team and tennis player in the spring, hague knows there is added responsibility during your final season. “it made me want to play better. Those younger (field hockey) players were looking to me to set an example,” said hague. One of her clutch performances came against hamden in the Class L first round. The Rams were upset 1-0 by stamford the year before. hague tied her career-high with three goals during a 3-0 shutout.

SPARTAN II

Senior Lauren Hague dribbles past a Daniel Hand defender last fall. cheshire previously defeated hamden (2-1) in overtime, but hague recalls being denied on a penalty stroke. she used that experience as motivation when converting in the rematch. “When i heard comments about the goalie stopping me before, i wanted to make it even more. i focused and put it in,” stated Hague, who had 15 goals and eight assists in 2009. another highlight was scoring two goals against sacred heart Academy. The Rams won 5-2 and honored their nine seniors. “as a class, we are very tight. We are all good friends on and off the field. I think it made it easier to play with them,” said hague, whose sister (emily) was a freshman. “emily has already showed a lot of improvement over one season.” When lauren made her goal of being a college player, she knew it would require participation outside high school. as a member of the usa Field hockey Futures program, she receives elite coaching. hague played the national Futures championship (Virginia Beach, Va.) in each of the last two years, the first of which she competed alongside eddy. the

friends traveled abroad for euro tour later in the summer. euro tour exposes american players to international competition. “the level i play over the summer is really advanced. even watching girls play in Virginia opens your eyes to different levels,” said hague. hague credits the Four Goals camp for giving her a taste of collegiate field hockey last July. university of Michigan head coach Marcia Pankratz runs the camp at Quinnipiac. “I learned that college field hockey is 1,000 times faster than high school. i was so sore afterwards,” hague said. ”everything is harder, faster, and intense.” uMass graduates just three players. senior defender Makaela Potts (team-best 31 points) returns as a two-time longstreth national Field hockey coaches association all-american. “the coach is from australia and, when i talked to her, she said she has never experienced anything like the monarchy of classes. she doesn’t care about the year of the player and, if you produce, you see time,” said hague. “it makes me feel better than just being a freshman.”

Sports Baseball Aims To Carry Momentum Baseball players carried high goals into last season. thanks in large part to seven seniors, the rams enjoyed their strongest season in years. cheshire (18-7 record) ended an eight-year skid against housatonic division rival Amity (6-5) and made their first southern connecticut conference tournament appearance since 2004, upsetting top-seeded West Haven (5-4; 11 innings) in the quarterfinals. The Rams reached the Class LL quarterfinals for the first time in six years, but West haven returned to clip them 3-2 and later hoist the championship. “For the guys coming back, i think that experience and facing top competition was important,” said head coach Bill Mrowka. “We had a lot of leadership and it helped us to stay focused throughout the season.” how they replace graduated standouts will largely determine the success of this year’s team. Senior centerfielder Dan Manke and junior catcher connor david will pick up leadership roles as co-captains. a three-year starter and catalyst at the top of the batting order, Manke earned all-housatonic for the first time last season. While cheshire graduated captains eric Ostroski and ryan dupont, seniors ryan connolly and Brian O’Reilly return outfield experience alongside Manke. “there is a lot of ability there,”

stated Mrowka, of Manke. “if he wants to play at the next level, he needs to take it up another notch. it is key when dan gets on base because then the rest of the order can drive him in.” david has shown composure from day one as a starter. the coaching staff allowed him to progress into a signal caller last year. “he knew the pitcher’s strengths and weaknesses. connor could call for a breaking ball with a runner on third because he could stop the ball,” added Mrowka. “connor is beyond his years in baseball. he is a heck of a young man and leader.” he will catch a new revamped staff this spring. Graduated pitchers Kevin jefferis, steve howard (captain/three-year starting shortstop; all-housatonic), and Ostroski chewed up innings last season and Cheshire benefitted from not having to overwork the bullpen. in their absence, cheshire will turn to their junior class. Max Slade became a starting infielder last uear, along with throwing out of the bullpen with ryan rougeot and Matt croteau. ryan Fowler (Most improved Player) opened the season with a string of scoreless innings. “Max was the missing piece to the puzzle. We didn’t feel comfortable, previously, moving steve (howard) to pitcher because he needed to play shortstop.

Golfers Shoot For States continued from page 11 at the scGGl tournament, only four strokes separated them from Avon (first place). “We’ve had some very close matches with avon and canton

(second place). some are decided by a single stroke,” said Williams. aitro, robles, and ehrlich contributed during the 2009 state Open. Cheshire finished 12th overall (423).

Max also made some great plays from second base,” explained Mrowka. “he (Fowler) grew up a lot. you can’t try to blow the ball by people. you have to be creative and hit your spots.” Graduation also impacts the infield. Brad Runowicz (first base; all-state/all-housatonic), howard, and dave tammaro (third base) also possessed chemistry at the plate. runowicz was one of the state’s top power hitters. senior john Kubilus and junior dom severino did step up into the lineup at times last season. Senior Dan Flynn, a first-year starter to the 2009 team, adds power at designated hitter. “you aren’t going to replace the run production,” added Mrowka. “We hope to platoon some guys and give them a chance to play.” the rams went 1-3 against West haven last year, along with tying shelton for second in the housatonic. amity has won the last seven division titles. “the goal is to win the league, qualify for the scc tournament, and advance in the state tournament,” said Mrowka.

Rahn Will Construct New Lineup On Court continued from page 12 nated at the state Open. the girls had never earned all-state before advancing to the quarterfinals. dutton cracked the lineup for the first time last spring, joining graduate laura Bunnell at number three doubles. “i’m really excited to have those two back,” added rahn, of his captains. “they may play singles, but we will see what happens. it’s good to have matches under their belt.” chemistry is essential to the success of a doubles team. Graduates carly leventhal and sam helm played together for three years, the last two coming at number one. they secured allstate/all-southern connecticut conference in each of the last seasons and finished as the 2008 state Open runner-up. The graduation of Sarah Griffin (captain), Paige Manacek (captain), and rachel Figura vacates the top three singles spots. Griffin started for four years and earned

all-scc for each of them. she filled the top position for three years. she joined leventhal/helm as a two-time all-state recipient. Manacek started for three years. amato played in the fourth spot last year. “it’s going to be different not knowing you will win at number one,” stated Rahn, of Griffin’s consistency. in order to win the scc title, cheshire will renew their rivalry with daniel hand. the teams have met in each of first four tournament finals, with the Tigers claiming the last two championships. hand won all three meetings last year, yet each match was separated by a single point. the rams (13-6 record; ninth seed) took another 4-3 loss to host east lyme (eighth seed) in the Class L first round. “Our first goal is going to have to be getting everybody in positions. i think there will be more goals beyond winning and losing,” said rahn.
