onating is a popular way to show appreciation during the holiday season, but not every household has the funds to donate this year. In lieu of making a financial donation, a gift of time and service is just as valuable.

Research indicates that 50 percent of charitable donations are made between Thanksgiving and Christmas. During the season of hospitality and togetherness, making charitable donations is ever-present in many people’s minds. When considering volunteerism, individuals can pick a cause that is dear to their hearts. For example, a printing company can offer to print letterhead or envelopes for an organization. A baker can offer food for luncheons or fundraisers. Shop Online To Save Money, Time — And Energy

hopping online — especially during the height of the holiday season — can save time, money, and a lot of headaches. The fact that you can purchase gifts for everyone on your list at any time of the day or night in the comfort of your own home is enough of an incentive for many Internet-savvy shoppers to stay away from the traffic and the malls between Thanksgiving and New Year’s.

For shoppers “going green” this holiday season, a 2009 study by the Carnegie Mellon Green Design Institute showed that shopping via the Internet is not only more energy efficient, but its carbon footprint is one-third smaller than that of bricks-and-mortar retail establishments.

So, whether you’re shopping online to save time or to save the planet, it pays to take note of a few simple guidelines.

DO… …verify that you’re dealing with a reputable retailer. To ensure that you’re dealing with a trustworthy merchant, always confirm that there

is a physical address and phone number you can use to contact the seller in the event that you have problems or questions. …make sure that the Web site is secure. Always scan online shopping sites for evidence that they are

secure. Some sites feature a lock icon in the browser’s status bar while others might have a Web site address that begins with “https:” (the “s” at the end stands for “secure”). …get all of the facts about your transaction. Make sure you know what you are buying and the total cost of the item -- including shipping and handling fees. Verify that the item can be returned for a full refund if you are not satisfied and who is responsible for the return shipping cost. Next, determine if the seller charges a restocking fee for returns and when you can expect to receive your purchase. …pay with a credit card or online payment service. When you make online purchases using a credit or charge card, the transaction is protected by the Fair Credit Billing Act, which gives consumers the right to challenge and dispute unauthorized charges. Some online

retailers also guarantee that cardholders will not be responsible for unauthorized charges made on the Internet. …print and save your order confirmation and receipts. For returns or to dispute charges, it always pays to have a paper trail. …compare online prices. In most cases, multiple online retailers sell the same item, so be sure to check around for the lowest price.

An easy way to comparison shop is by visiting one of several reputable online price-comparison sites. …look for free shipping deals.

If you’re making multiple purchases, look for Web sites that offer free shipping for larger orders.

DON’T… …submit any financial information other than your credit card number. If a message asking for financial information such as your Social Security number or bank

account information pops up while you are shopping or checking out, cancel the transaction immediately and leave the site. Reputable online retailers will never request that kind of information. …pay with a debit card, cash or wire transfer. These types of transactions can be difficult -- even impossible -- to refute or reverse.

When shopping online, stick to credit or charge cards. …buy from spammers — or scammers. Never make purchases in response to e-mails with tempting offers that seem too good to be true.

Most likely, they are. …buy from a Web site that doesn’t “feel” legitimate. Go with your gut. If the site doesn’t feel right, don’t go through with the transaction.

Keep Pets Safe During Holiday Hustle And Bustle

H

olidays can be as stressful for animals as they are for people. Not only are our pets wrought with the anticipation of what Santa is bringing, but they are also stressed by the endless activity that’s going on.

It might be easy to overlook your pets, as making sure your mother-inlaw is happy is more important than your poodle’s contentment, but pets still need to be kept safe. Keep the

following tips in mind to make sure the holidays stay happy for those with two legs and those with four.

Keep bones away. Turkey, chicken, even ham can all have bones, bones your dog would love to get his paws on. Despite these desires, meat bones can be a choking hazard for animals — a hazard that can make them sick and, in some instances, be fatal. For this reason, it’s important to keep bones away from your pets. If you feed them table scraps, make sure they are boneless and keep the trash in a secure area, one that Fido can’t sneak his way into.

Keep plants far from pets. Mistletoe, poinsettias, and Christmas trees all do their part to add a little essence to the holiday, but if consumed by pets they can add heartache as well. Certain plants, particularly poinsettias and

mistletoe, are poisonous to animals and should be kept as far away as possible. Eating a plant, your dog may think he’s sampling the salad bar, but he’s really eating something that is anything but nutritious.

Don’t put things in the Christmas tree water that you don’t want your pets consuming. Pets can’t help it: they see water, they have to drink it. This includes the water underneath the Christmas tree. Some people may leave Christmas tree water alone, but others fill it with chemicals that can sicken animals.

If you have pets around the house, it’s best to leave the Christmas tree water as pure as possible.

Don’t leave pets outside for long periods. It might the easiest route when company comes over.

Put the pets outside to keep them from jumping up and getting their fur all over Aunt Shelly’s leather jacket.

While it’s fine to keep pets outside in nice weather, for anyone who lives in cold weather, pets shouldn’t be kept outside for long amounts of time. A heated garage or basement are better options. These alternatives will help keep your pets warm and keep you from defrosting a dogsicle.

Planning Ahead Gets The Most Out Of Black Friday

J

ust like marathoners lining up at the start of a race, stores across the country play host each year to scores of shoppers on the day after Thanksgiving. Many of those shoppers arrive long before a store even opens, finding themselves elbow-to-elbow with similar deal-seekers.

Known as Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving appears to be “bulletproof.” Even last year, when the much-maligned national economy had started to struggle mightily, shoppers spent more than $10 billion on Black Friday. This year could prove difficult to forecast, as many families continue to struggle through layoffs in spite of a slight recovery in the economy.

Adding to that difficulty are the differing points of view with respect to Black Friday. For every success story of a plasma TV purchased for 50 percent off, there seem to be a dozen or more stories about the individual who waits outside a store in the cold, only to find a popular item is sold out by the time he or she gets inside the doors. In other words, predicting the success of Black Friday for retailers is just as difficult as predicting the success of Black Friday for individuals: sometimes both get what they want and sometimes neither does.

But, if last year is any proof, shoppers are still going to hit the stores this Black Friday, and they’re probably going to do so in droves. For those braving the mayhem that often characterizes Black Friday, consider the following survival tips. ◆ Do your research. Perhaps no items are more steeply marked down in price come Black Friday than big ticket electronics, most notably plasma, LCD, or DLP televisions. Unfortunately, not all such appliances are equal. Getting a good price is not necessarily the same thing as getting a good deal. This is where research needs to play a role.

Do some homework before buying big ticket items, including televisions. Retailer Web sites often have customer ratings sections where customers can rate specific appliances. If ratings are consistently

poor or commenters routinely cite problems, then steer clear of those items, no matter how low the price might be. ◆ Get up early. Some deals are exactly what they seem. While it can be difficult to get out of bed in the middle of the night to go holiday shopping, it will be easy to go back to sleep when arriving home with exactly what you wanted and knowing you got the best deal possible.

Many stores open at 4 or 5 a.m. on Black Friday. While waking up that

early seems like a tall order, particularly after eating so much turkey the day before, there’s no law against napping on Black Friday and, if you get what you came for, you could be back in bed in a couple of hours. ◆ Don’t stress out. Black Friday isn’t easy for anyone. (Just ask any retail employee.) Chances are, even the most veteran Black Friday shopper is going to feel stressed out at one point or another. If the stress becomes too much, simply go home. This year figures to have lots of good deals throughout the holiday

season, as retailers plan for families spending less, thanks to the economy. That means the deals on Black Friday, while they might be the best of the season, probably won’t be significantly better than something you might find a few weeks later. ◆ Buy a newspaper on Thanksgiving. The Thanksgiving Day paper is packed with flyers and coupons offering Black Friday discounts. Peruse the paper for such coupons while watching football on Thanksgiving and you’re likely to be glad you did.

eorge Frideric Handel’s highly esteemed and tremendously popular work, Messiah, will ignite the holiday season on Saturday, Dec. 11, in beautiful St. Michael’s Church at 25 South Street in Litchfield and again on Sunday, Dec. 12, 2010 at the Naugatuck Valley Community College Fine Arts Center at 750 Chase Parkway in Waterbury when the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra presents the concert “Hallelujah!”

The Naugatuck Valley Community College Choir, under the direction of Dr. Richard Gard, as well as soloists from Yale Opera, including soprano Kelly Hill, alto Jamilyn ManningWhite, tenor Jorge Prego and bass David Pershal, will join the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra for its first complete performance of “the

greatest story ever told” in many years. For the December 11 concert, several members of St. Michael’s choir will join the NVCC choir. Maestro Leif Bjaland, music director and conductor, will lead the orchestra through this timeless masterpiece.

One of the most renowned pieces of English sacred music, Handel’s Messiah has been performed across the world for more than 250 years.

Composed in only three weeks, the work has undergone numerous revisions and re-orchestrations since its premiere performance in 1742, the first of which was by Mozart shortly after Handel’s death. The work focuses on the central beliefs of Christianity from the Old Testament prophecies of the coming of the Messiah to the New Testament Gospel stories of the birth, death,

and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Originally associated with Easter, Messiah has since become a Christmas tradition.

“Performing this sacred work in the unique and sacred setting of St. Michael’s is a first for the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra,” explains Steve Collins, executive director of the WSO. “We wanted to present the masterful piece in a setting and location that would enliven the senses to the message of the work beyond the music.”

St. Michael’s is a magnificent English Neo-Gothic stone church

constructed in 1920 and located just off the Green in Litchfield. The church is adorned with chestnut and oak carvings, a Sienna marble altar with a triptych painted by H. Siddons Mowbray, foremost muralist of the period, a 2221-pipe Quimby organ, and Tiffany stained glass windows providing the perfect setting for a work of such glorious proportions.

Tickets for the performance on Sunday, Dec. 12, at NVCC Fine Arts Center are $20, $30, and $50.

Winter Road Conditions Present Driving Challenges

I

ndividuals who live in areas of the country where the temperature and weather changes throughout the seasons have to adapt their driving to meet the road conditions. Weather-related accidents are some of the most prevalent but can be largely prevented if the proper driving techniques are followed.

Some of the more dangerous driving conditions include heavy rain that causes hydroplaning, driving on ice and driving in heavy snow.

HYDROPLANING Hydroplaning occurs when water on the roadway accumulates in front of a vehicle’s tires faster than the weight of the vehicle can push it out of the way. The water pressure can push the vehicle up on a thin layer of water, essentially breaking the tires’ contact with the road. In a matter of seconds, a driver can lose control and end up swerving out of his or her lane.

It is important to follow a few guidelines to prevent hydroplaning.

First, keep tires well maintained.

Worn-out tread can contribute to hydroplaning, as can inadequately inflated tires. Certain tread patterns are more capable of diverting water away from the tires. Ask a professional about which tire tread to choose.

Next, realize that the higher the speed, the higher the propensity to hydroplane. At lower speeds, it is generally rare to hydroplane, unless the water puddles driven through are exceptionally deep. Reduce speeds when it is raining.

Also, lighter vehicles are more prone to hydroplaning. Again, if driving a compact or lightweight vehicle, slow down when water is on the road.

Should hydroplaning occur, let off the gas and do not apply the brake or turn the wheels. Once the car slows down and retains traction once more, steer and brake accordingly.

ICE Ice is a problem that plagues drivers when the temperature drops.

While some ice can be detected on the roadway, thin sheets of ice that blend in with the asphalt cause a condition known as “black ice.”

Black ice can be undetectable until a car begins to skid.

Many people have trouble driving on icy roads. In fact, winter conditions often lead to accidents. More than 500 fatalities were attributed to snowy, icy roads in the 2008–09 winter season in the U.S. It is important to make some modifications to a vehicle if driving on ice will be commonplace this season.

At the least, proper tire inflation is important to maintain traction. Tires should also be checked for tread, as bald tires will do little to grip the road.

Individuals who want even more protection should consider switching to snow tires for the winter. These tires are made from a softer rubber so they can better grip the road.

They may also feature a different tire tread for even more traction. Snow chains can be used to offer greater grip. However, speeds will have to be greatly reduced when chains are in place.

Reducing speed is helpful when driving in an inclement condition, including on ice. It helps a driver to better correct a situation and react.

If skidding is experienced, gently steer in the direction of the skid without applying the brakes. When

Preheat oven to 350°F. In a mixer, cream sugar and butter until fluffy.

Add maple syrup and eggs and blend well. Mix in the pumpkin. Sift together flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, and cloves. Add the dry ingredients to the batter and mix well. Drop rounded tablespoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for 10 minutes, or until lightly golden brown around the edges. Cool thoroughly on racks.

Top each cookie with cream cheese frosting (recipe follows) and a whole pecan.

Cream Cheese Frosting 2 (8-ounce) packages cream cheese 1 cup confectioner’s sugar 1/4 cup milk 1 tablespoon vanilla extract Zest of one lemon Whole pecans In a mixer, beat cream cheese until fluffy. Beat in powdered sugar until smooth. Add milk and vanilla.

Beat until smooth. If frosting is too thick, thin with a little more milk. Fold in lemon zest.

he Cecchetti Ballet Theatre (CBT), a not-for-profit dance troupe, will perform the fulllength production of Tchaikovsky’s most-beloved ballet, The Nutcracker, on Dec. 11 and 12. This production features a cast of 100 children and adults from Cheshire and surrounding towns.

The role of Clara will be performed by Cheshire High School sophomore Olivia Druckrey. Olivia performed in her first Nutcracker when she was 3 years old and has been dancing with CBT ever since.

CBT is thrilled to announce that Fredrick Davis will be the guest artist this year, dancing the title role of The Nutcracker, with partner Miranda Lennox as the Sugar

Plum Fairy in the Grand Pas de Deux! Mr. Davis currently dances with Dance Theatre of Harlem, and has previously guested with Albany Berkshire Ballet, Ballet Tennessee, and North Carolina Dance Theatre. His studies include full scholarship to summer intensives at American Ballet Theatre, Boston Ballet, and New York’s Joffrey Ballet School. We are pleased and excited to have him join our cast!

y brain is frozen”, said seven-year-old Jason, as he hid behind my office chair. He then covered his ears as siren noises approached because the sound “hurts my ears,” he said.

Jason had been referred to Soul Friends after having limited benefits from a year of traditional therapy. Jason was in a house fire that severely burned his mother. In response to the trauma, Jason’s body was either in “hyper-alert” mode with body tremors or “shut down” where his body felt “frozen” and “stuck.”

As the shrill noise filled the office walls, Jason asked, “Do you think Bear could come over here and sit with me?” Within seconds, Bear, my Corgi-Shepherd therapy dog, was

by Jason’s side. With little notice, Jason ran his fingers through Bear’s fawn coat, looked up with delight and said: “Look — my fingers aren’t stuck. Do you think Bear could help unfreeze my brain?”

Another turning moment was a day when Bear approached Jason’s mother and licked her badly burnt fingers. Jason had been afraid to

touch his mom because of his guilt about playing with matches.

Simply put, “Bear makes it better,” Jason answered when his mother asked why he trembled less after about 10 weeks of animal-assisted therapy (AAT).

Therapy animals do amazing work. At Soul Friends, our 13 therapy animals have partnered with their human companions to provide comfort and healing to over 4,500 children across Connecticut over the past eight years. Stories of loss, grief, and trauma are whispered into the ears of Muffin, a Terrier mix, or Cesar, a 30-year-old Morgan horse.

While walking or petting a therapy animal, children feel comfortable to share a worry or try a new behavior.

At Soul Friends, AAT is a goaldirected intervention delivered by a health care professional in which

an animal becomes an integral part of the treatment program (Delta Society Web site). Yet, if you ask a child like Jason, it doesn’t feel like therapy and that is where the difference begins.

Soul Friends office has a “wall of miracles”: the girl who spoke for the first time with Muffin’s leash in hand, the girl once abused whose body now feels in control as she takes the horse over a jump. “I felt like I was flying and free to be me,” the girl exclaimed in a group at Hunter’s Glen in Cheshire.

Take Those Turkey Leftovers Beyond Sandwiches

L

eftover turkey is the inevitable result of Thanksgiving dinner.

Many cooks over-estimate the number of pounds of turkey they need to feed family and guests, or an abundance of side dishes makes Tom Turkey less of the culinary centerpiece he should be. Don’t worry — there are plenty of ways to turn it into delicious meals to be enjoyed for several days after the holiday.

Remaining turkey should be deboned and packed up for storage no more than two hours after the bird has been served, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s

Food Safety and Inspection Service. Generally, leftover turkey can be enjoyed three to four days after Thanksgiving if it is refrigerated. If the meat is frozen, it can last much longer.

Here are some ideas: • Turkey chili: Combine the meat with kidney beans, red and green peppers, onions, pureed tomato and a package of chili seasonings from the supermarket. Let simmer and serve with corn bread or over rice.

• Turkey kabobs: Thread turkey on skewers with apples, pears or pineapples. Bake until meat is reheated and fruit is soft.

• Turkey gyro: Top pitas with turkey meat, lettuce, onion, and fresh tzatziki sauce. Tzatziki is made by mixing chopped cucumber, garlic and lemon juice with a thick Greek yogurt.

• Turkey omelets: Chop up turkey and add it to the egg mixture when making omelets. Serve with toast spread with cranberry sauce.

• Turkey pot pie: Line a pie tin with homemade or store-bought pie crust. Add the turkey, half a can of cream of chicken soup, a package of thawed mixed vegetables, and the remaining pie crust. Bake until the pot pie is bubbly and hot.

• Turkey Mexican-style: Replace the meat in tacos, fajitas or enchiladas with leftover turkey.

• Buffalo turkey pizza: Toss left-

over turkey with melted butter and hot sauce. Use the seasoned meat on top of a homemade or pre-made pizza. Bake and enjoy.

• Turkey-tossed pasta: Add strips of turkey to a dish of pasta, topped with a favorite sauce.

• Turkey panini: Slice a thick, crusty bread and spread the outsides with butter. Add layers of turkey, cheese and cooked bacon.

Cook on a griddle, using a heavy pan to hold the panini flat while cooking. Flip over and continue to cook until the panini is golden brown and the cheese is melted.

• Pulled pork-style turkey: Chop up or pull apart leftover turkey meat.

Toss with your favorite barbecue sauce. Serve on soft sandwich buns with a side of cole slaw.

• Turkey salad sandwich: Mix chopped turkey with mayonnaise or salad dressing, diced celery, onions, and shredded carrots for a refreshing cold sandwich filling.

• Turkey and vegetable stir-fry: Heat a wok or skillet with a little oil and saute onions, garlic and favorite stir-fry vegetables. Add the turkey to heat and season with soy sauce or teriyaki. Serve over steamed rice.

• The taste of a turkey has to do with its age. An older male is preferable to a younger male, because the young “tom” is stringy. Conversely, younger female hens are preferred to older ones.

• A turkey less than 16 weeks old is called a fryer. An older turkey between 5 and 7 months of age is known as a roaster.

• The light meat of turkey contains about 225 calories per cup and 5.2 grams of fat. Generally, turkey is low in sodium and high in niacin, phosphorous, selenium, and vitamin B6.

Beware Of Bogus Charities, Seasonal Scammers

F

or every charitable donor out there, it seems there are at least five people looking to take advantage.

Charity scams are in abundance this time of year. Scammers prey on the good nature of charitable individuals by tugging at their heartstrings to donate to charities around the holiday season. It can take an eagle eye to steer clear of bogus charity endeavors. Here are some tips to keep in mind.

Disasters: Scammers love to prey on people after big disasters,

such as earthquakes, hurricanes, or other weather events that get media attention. When people want to donate money to causes, scammers come out of the woodwork ready to steal money from the unsuspecting who think they’re doing good. Don’t give money to any organization that hasn’t been thoroughly researched.

Heartache letters: E-mail scams are on the rise. Many people have received messages stating that Mr. So and So needs money to be wired to get a family inheritance, trust or some other large monetary fund,

which will then be shared with those who helped secure the funds. Once a check is sent or money is wired into an account, that’s the last correspondence.

Sound-alike companies: Many charities play off of the public image of well-known charities by naming their bogus charity very similarly.

For example, those familiar with the Make a Wish Foundation may find a charity solicitation from Wishmakers Foundation. Without thinking, a donation could be made to the wrong charity.

Avoid cash gifts: If a charity requests cash or a person approaches on the street or door-todoor, it’s best to skip this sort of donation. Cash donations cannot be tracked. Reputable charities will take personal checks and issue a receipt.

Don’t fall for the hard-sell: If a person calling or soliciting for donations is overly forward or provides a hard sell, don’t think about donating.

Charitable donations are voluntary and should not be received by peer pressure.

Check e-mail accounts: Reputable charities will have a registered domain name and e-mail server. If a charity request comes from a Yahoo, Gmail or another such account, be suspicious.

Another hazard from snow is reduced visibility. Driving under blizzard conditions is very dangerous. Wind and snow can cause white-out situations, essentially wiping out any visibility. In these instances, a driver should pull over to a safe area and wait out the storm.

Don’t underestimate the value of a good pair of windshield wiper blades. New blades can make a big difference in visibility. And don’t forget to keep windshield washer fluid topped off.

Some people experience trouble with snow accumulation on roads that have not been plowed. A lower-profile car with smaller tires may not be able to navigate through snow drifts and end up getting stuck. This can prove dangerous if the car stalls in the middle of a road where visibility is poor.

The best advice for driving in snow is to assess the situation. If it is falling heavily, it can be safer to stay home. If a person must drive, reduce speed and leave a very large buffer zone between the vehicles to allow for emergency stopping. When approaching intersections or stop signs, begin braking early to prevent skidding through. Also, be extremely cautious of other vehicles, as they may be experiencing trouble stopping as well.

Going Away? Take Steps To Safeguard Your Home

afety and security is an important concern for many homeowners. Around the holidays, it can be easy to overlook those concerns due to the increasingly busy schedule many people have between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. Unfortunately, putting home security on the backburner during the holiday season can prove to be a grievous error. Because extended vacations to visit family and friends are common during the holiday season, criminals often target this time of year thanks to empty homes they know will not be the hub of activity they usually are. To safeguard your home while you’re out of town this

holiday season — or any time, for that matter — it’s best to take a few precautionary measures: ◆ Ask a friend or neighbor to pick up the mail. If your home doesn’t have a mail slot in the front door, a telltale sign that you’re away is an overstuffed mailbox. Before you leave, arrange to have your mail, newspapers and flyers picked up by a neighbor or friend. If you can, arrange to have newspaper delivery suspended for the duration of your trip. If you can’t find someone to pick up your mail, you can ask the local post office to suspend delivery while you’re out of town. ◆ Leave some lights on, including the Christmas lights.

If your beautiful Christmas lights display glows in the weeks leading up to Christmas but then suddenly disappears once the holiday arrives, thieves can probably determine that your house is empty and therefore a good target. By leaving a kitchen light on inside your house and keeping your Christmas lights on a timer, you’re at least giving the appearance that someone is home, and a yard illuminated thanks to your decorative lights makes it much more difficult for potential thieves to creep around your house under the cloak of darkness. Hints Keep Thanksgiving Eating Habits Healthier

H

oliday eating habits are often characterized by overindulgence. From the first taste of turkey on Thanksgiving Day ‘til the last pig in blanket hors d’oeuvre on New Year’s Eve, holiday eating habits are not always healthy.

Unhealthy eating and overindulgence during the holidays is something many people accept as a staple of the season. But it’s just as easy to enjoy a healthy diet during the holidays as it is to go overboard.

All it takes is a nip and tuck here and there to make holiday eating habits healthier.

• Contribute healthy items when attending social gatherings. Many holiday parties are pot luck, wherein each guest brings a dish to the party.

Instead of contributing another batch of holiday cookies, bring a healthy dish, like a large salad that makes for a great appetizer or a low-fat and low-calorie dessert that everyone can enjoy.

• Don’t forget vitamins and minerals. There’s no way to control the menu when attending holiday functions like office parties or even when traveling to visit family and friends. But, when cooking during the holiday season, add more

healthy foods to existing recipes to make up for any lost nutritional value. Include more vegetables in

• Limit alcohol consumption.

Overindulging during the holidays does not just pertain to eating too much turkey. It’s easy to overindulge with alcohol as well. In addition to being dangerous, overindulging with alcohol is also very unhealthy. Many drinks are high in calories, even if the drinks are four ounces or less. A 3.5-ounce martini, for instance, has well over 100 calories.

• Baste with broth. Holiday turkeys need to be basted, and arguably no baste is healthier than fat-free broth.

Many recipes call for basting with fat drippings or sauces. But fat-free broth is a much healthier option, and might even taste better.

• Don’t miss meals. Thanks to the hectic nature of the holiday season, it’s easy to skip a meal or two here or there, especially if there’s a holiday party later in the day. But skipping meals will only increase the likelihood of overeating at holiday gatherings, which, as mentioned earlier, often feature less healthy fare.

Please Think Before You Drink And Drive This Holiday Season

T

his year, 1,200 people will lose their lives during the holiday season as a result of alcohol-related traffic accidents. The United States Department of Transportation reported that from 2001 to 2005, an average of 45 people died each day during the holiday season, with the largest number of drunk driving fatalities occurring during Thanksgiving.

According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), deaths from drinking and driving spike around the holidays, with alcohol being blamed for about 52 percent of fatal collisions on Christmas and 57 percent on New Years compared to a rate of 41 percent for the entire year. In addition to the more than 1,200 alcohol-related deaths that will occur on the road this holiday season, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that more than 25,000 people will be injured.

Some Good News And Some Bad News The good news is that there has been a steady decline in the rate of alcohol-related deaths on the nation’s highways during the holidays. Statistics gathered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that in 1982, there were more than 2,600 deaths due to drinking and driving -- accounting for 60 percent of all accident fatalities. Recent years, however, have witnessed about 1,200 fatalities, or roughly 40 percent.

The discouraging news, however, is that underage drinkers are responsible for between 10 and 20 percent of all alcohol consumed and that, during the holiday period, 21- to 24-year-olds repeatedly make up the highest percentage of impaired drivers. Another negative trend is that arrests for women driving under the influence increased by 29 percent from 1998 to 2007, while DWI arrests for men fell by eight percent. However, the number of men arrested during that period was still four times that of women.

Take Steps To Protect Yourself And Others Even with the steady decline in fatalities, the number of drivers with DWI arrests is on the rise. It is estimated that there are as many as two million drunk drivers with three or more convictions and more than 400,000 with five or more DWI convictions still behind the wheel. Here are five steps you can take to help avoid becoming a statistic: 1. If you drink, don’t drive no matter how little you think you’ve had.

2. Don’t let someone you know get behind the wheel if they’ve been drinking.

3. Avoid driving during early and late evening hours on holidays.

4. If you must drive, be cautious and watch for the erratic movements of drunken drivers.

5. Immediately report suspected drunk drivers to the police.
