It's getting to be that time of year again. Stores are having their end-ofsummer sales, vacations are few and far between, and the calender is getting dangerously close to September. Just 18 days from now is the first day of the 2010/11 school year, and students, faculty, and the Superintendent of Schools are all left wondering, where exactly did this summer go? It is usually right around this time of the summer when Superintendent of Schools Dr. Greg Florio starts planning on a teacher orientation to get new faculty members acclimated to the district. However, there is no need for an orientation this year, as there is only one new hire, Florio said, and only two positions were posted all summer. Between this year and last, there are approximately 30 fewer positions in the district because of budget constraints, but Florio remains confident that Cheshire students will still receive quality instruction this year and beyond. "We are absorbing this, but we'll have bigger class sizes in a number of schools and all grade levels. The sizes in grades three through six will probably be higher than we've come to expect in Cheshire," Florio said. "We've had to make cuts across the
board. The enrollment is declining, but not significantly enough to absorb it." Despite this fact, Florio believed students will continue to be successful. Now in his 20th year in Cheshire, more than six of which have been spent as superintendent, Florio has noticed changes in the district, and remarked that he is one of the last administrators still in Cheshire from his hire two decades ago. "We have a very good mix of backgrounds and experiences. In the last decade, there was significant turnover, at times we were hiring 30 people," Florio said. "We are seeing a younger staff, but we still have some veteran staff members whose experience is welcomed." With recently released Connecticut Mastery Test scores that showed improvement at nearly every grade level and every subject area, Florio said he is pleased, even though he is being asked to
do more with less. "The numbers are good and that is a reflection on the staff and administration," Florio commented. "And it doesn't hurt to have really good kids, either." Last summer, the administration had a shake up, with new hires filling important roles in the district. Florio said with a school year under their belts, and no new changes in administration, it makes things easier leading into a new school season. "The administration is in place. It's not in flux like last summer," he acknowledged. "They are all very involved and it makes transitioning into a new year much easier." There are some projects on the horizon that could provide some noticeable differences in the schools. Those include the kitchen renovation project at Dodd Middle See NEW, page 7

Don’t Say “Yes” To Every Extracurricular Activity Request Band. Choir. dance. Baseball. Basketball. soccer. Cheerleading. gymnastics. horseback riding. Book club. debate team. Chess club. The list of extracurricular activities available in and outside of school goes on and on. There are so many things children can do that it is easy to see how they might become too involved. That's right. There is such a thing as a child participating in too much, and as their parent, it is up to you to keep a rein on their extracurricular activities. When your child approaches you about participating in extracurricular activities, don't just say yes. sit down with them and determine exactly how much free time they can devote to such activities. if your child doesn't get home from school until 4 p.m. and has one to two hours
of homework each night, that doesn't leave them much time for extracurricular activities on the weekdays. They might be better off participating in activities on the weekends. While determining how much time your child has available, don't overlook the importance of family time and downtime. Your child needs to spend time with you, your spouse and their siblings, even if it is just an hour on weeknights and a few hours on the weekends. They also need time to hang out with their friends and be by themselves. Make sure they get the opportunity for all. Once you have an idea of how much time your child can devote to extracurricular activities and when they can do so, you can start searching for relevant activities. Keep in mind that it is
your child, not you, who will be participating in the activities, so let them choose things they like. if they don't like being around horses, don't push them to take a horseback riding class. You will just be wasting your money and their time. Find out as much as you can about any extracurricular activities that interest your child. arrange for a tour of the facilities and sit in on a class, if possible. Make sure ample instruction and supervision are provided. Make sure all equipment is in good condition and up-to-date. ask about the fees and any additional equipment required. Know what your child is getting into before signing on the dotted line. Be wise in the selection of extracurricular activities for your child. don't overload them in an

Learn To Read Warning Signs Your Child Is Being Bullied Bullies are a part of life. There's usually one in every school, and most children either know of them or encounter them frequently. While some children can handle bullies, others cannot and find themselves stressed out. Fortunately, there are steps that you can take to help your child deal with a school bully effectively. Although some children will inform their parents that they are being bullied, others will keep it to themselves. To determine if your child is being bullied, look for these warning signs: • Your child suddenly hates school or changes the route they take to school without explanation. • Your child appears moody and withdrawn and experiences a loss in appetite. • Your child cries in bed, wets the bed or has nightmares. • Your child seems distracted at
school and performs poorly. • Your child becomes aggressive and begins to bully those at home. If you notice any of these signs in your child and suspect they are being bullied, ask them directly. Some children will admit it; others will deny it and fess up later.

Norton Plans Several Projects A Note From Norton Principal Mary Karas This year we are proud to welcome approximately 500 students to Norton School. It has been a busy summer, in addition to building projects, Norton teachers have had summer hours to prepare for the new school year. Four of our teachers are attending a weeklong training in responsive classroom strategies, as this is part of our strategic initiative. Building projects include beautiful new windows for the main
building and a new roof for the arts space. The windows will not only be more energy efficient but will improve the look, inside and out. Also, the PTA is planning a new landscape for our courtyard as well as replacing the swings for the front playground. To welcome our new families to the Norton community, we will have an orientation on Monday, Aug. 23, from 9 to 10 a.m. This is not for our first grade families, but for new families to give them the opportunity to learn more about our school and to have a tour. Our first grade families have orientation on Wednesday, Aug. 25, from 8:45 to 9:15 a.m. Students and their parents will meet their teachers and see their classrooms. Class placement letters for all students will be mailed Friday, Aug. 20. Our Open House nights are Sept. 14 for grades 1 and 6, Sept. 21 for grades 2 and 4, and Sept. 22 for grades 3 and 5. Visit www. cheshire.k12.ct.us/norton for additional information and announcements. The home/school communication is of utmost importance to us, so please let us know if you have any questions.

Our school looks wonderful, thanks to the efforts of our PTA Beautification Committee, and we will have our Parent Advisory Council "Welcome Back" banner hanging to greet everyone with bright balloons and waving arms as we all arrive on our first day.
Our annual goals have been set and will focus on continued efforts with Reader's Workshop and implementation of responsive classroom principles and our Cheshire Public School Performance Standards. Make Sure You Are Prepared For Teacher Conference When you go to a parentteacher conference, you expect the teacher to be prepared, but shouldn't you be, too? This is one of the few times you will get a one-on-one meeting with your child's teacher and, even if it brief, you can use the time to find out how your child is doing and how they could do better. Here are some ideas to make the meeting more productive for you and your child's teacher. Talk to your child beforehand
about how they are doing in class and what they think about their teacher. The more you know, the better questions you will ask. Create a folder with the test scores, major homework assignments and concerns you want to discuss with the teacher. Among your concerns might be what your child's strongest and weakest subjects are, how prepared they are for class, how much they participate in class, how much they are working to their ability
and how well they get along with others. You might also want to find out how the teacher evaluates students. View the first meeting with your child's teacher as a chance to build a relationship with them and show them you want to take an active part in your child's education. Don't go into the meeting just to discuss your child's test scores. If at all possible, avoid taking babies or younger children to the meeting. That way,
you won't be distracted. Arrive early and let the teacher lead the conference. Be open-minded and hear the teacher out. Take notes, and when your concerns are mutual, discuss how the two of you could work together. Don't allow this to be the only time you talk with your child's teacher or keep your child in the dark. Find out the best way to communicate with your child's teacher and keep in touch with them.
When you get home, talk to your child about what their teacher said, focusing on the positive things first. Let them know the concerns that came up and how everyone can work together to address them. Parents are busier today than ever. That's why it is important that they make the most of the parent-teacher conference. Parents and teachers play a major part in a child's life and should be on the same page.
New Projects Will Change The Look Of Some District Schools continued from page 2 School and window replacement at Norton Elementary School. However, most of the work being done this summer and next school year are "smaller projects" Florio stated, many of which are being handled in-house in an effort to save money. Projects, such as code compliance hardware for doors at Cheshire High School, are being done by district employees. These smaller items compile a list "a mile long," but many can be done "cheaply" by
Cheshire workers, Florio insists "We try to pick off stuff that we can do in-house," Florio explained. "Things seem to be on target right now." Due to trimmed-down budgets, new technology purchases also weren't as prevalent as in past years. The district did purchase some new SMART Boards and new computers to replace decades-old machines, but Florio said "there is nothing major this year." There are some new state bills
and acts that could also influence Cheshire and Florio said he is keeping his eyes and ears tuned into Hartford to see what the legislature will do. He is also trying to keep tabs on any potential state and federal grant programs that could assist the district now and in the future. Perhaps as a way to prepare, Florio said there would be two paperless pilot classrooms this coming school year. A class at Dodd Middle School and a class at Cheshire High School are going completely paperless,
which Florio said could be a reality in the next decade. Students would rely on laptop computers for classroom instruction, with assignments being posted online. By using an online service, such as Google Docs, students and staff can post homework, tests, even rough drafts, online for either the teacher or students

Highland Festival Promises A Fun Time A Note From Highland Principal Beverly Scully It is always a time of excitement and anticipation as students, parents, and teachers learn of their new classes. This year we are looking forward to another year of success for all of our students. Highland is welcoming one new teacher, Mrs. Ann Guinnipero, who will be teaching special education. On Thursday, August 24, at 9:30 a.m., we will be offering an orientation for families new to Highland. New families will be welcomed, learn about the curriculum, hear about
Highland’s procedures, and get a tour of the school. On September 30 (rain date October 7), we will be having our Family Fall Festi-
val. In the past, our festivals have been a lot of fun, and we know that this year’s will be better than ever.

Free And Reduced School Lunches Available To Children
Cheshire Public Schools has announced it’s policy for determining eligibility of children who may receive free or reduced price meals served under the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs. Local school officials have adopted the United States Department of Agriculture’s Income Eligibility Guidelines following family size and income criteria for determining eligibility. Children from families whose income levels are shown (see chart) are eligible for free or reduced price meals. Application forms are being sent to all homes with a letter to parents. To apply for free or reduced price meals, households should fill out the application and return it to the school. Additional copies are available at the principal’s office at each school. The information provided on the application is confidential and will be used only for the purposes of determining eligibility, and may be verified at any time during the school year by school or other program officials. Applications may be submitted at any
time during the year. Application forms for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) (formerly known as Food Stamps) or Temporary Family Assistance (TFA) households require the child’s name, the child’s SNAP/TFA case number, and the signature of an adult household member. Households receiving assistance under the SNAP/TFA programs will be notified of their eligibility and their children will be provided free benefits unless the household notifies the school that it chooses to decline benefits. Households receiving SNAP benefits or TFA for their children should only submit an application if they are not notified of their eligibility by Sept. 30. Households receiving SNAP benefits or TFA for their children may receive a direct certification letter from the Department of Social Services. These letters will automatically qualify a child for free meals and may be submitted instead of an application to the school. Application forms for all other households require a statement of total household income, household size, and names of all house-

The teacher has just informed you that your child is having a bit of trouble writing. The first thing you want to know is what you can do to help. Here are some tips. Until they have developed good motor skills, children aren't able to write very well. Every child's motor skills develop differently, but the more your child uses their fingers in activities, the sooner their motor skills will develop. Activities to help a child develop their motor skills include: • Have them play with clay to strengthen their fingers and hand muscles. • Encourage them to play with action figures, small blocks, miniature cars and any other small toys they can find. • Put puzzles together with them. • Encourage them to do art projects using scissors, crayons and paper tearing. • Play games with them that involve using cards or small game pieces. • Have them stack coins according to denomination. • Help them learn to tie and lace their shoes and button their clothes. Handwriting problems occur in five main areas: letter formation, sizing, spaces between words, letter slant, and line alignment. To help with letter formation, there are a number of activities. Try having your child write a letter in shaving cream or sand. Use arrows beside the letter to show them how to form the letter correctly. Take a picture and have your child write the letter by all the things that begin with that let-
ter. Make a word search with lots of words using that letter. Pick a topic and have your child make up a list of words using the letter that are associated with that topic. Play Tic Tac Toe using different letters. To help with letter sizing, experiment with making giant and tiny letters. Take something your child has written and circle letters that are too big or too little. Have them copy a sentence using big letters one time and tiny letters the next. To help with letter spacing, have your child write some sentences on graph paper and leave two or three squares between the words. Have them write down a word, then place the index finger of their non-writing hand after the word and write the next word to the right of the finger. To help with letter slant, draw a diagonal line on a chalkboard and have your child write a word on the board as many times as nec-
Making School Supply Shopping Easy
Shopping for school supplies. Most parents dread it, but it's got to be done, so they forge ahead, struggling to make sense of what's on the list, where to find it, and how to get through the long checkout line without losing their mind. Fortunately, there are ways to make the chore easier. First, get out a copy of each child's school supply list. Study the items on the lists and make sure you know what to buy. If not, contact the school or your

essary to get the slant right. Practice with imagery, such as going up the mountain and down the mountain. To help with letter alignment, have your child do dot-to-dot or maze exercises. Draw a line on paper to represent grass. When writing a word, make sure your child touches every letter to the grass. It may not seem like it, but having legible handwriting is an absolute must. Not everything can be done on a computer and printed out. When having your child practice, make it fun. Let them use a special pencil. Don't have them just copy some words. Use word puzzles, anagrams or have them write a list of words around a certain theme. A child needs to develop the physical requirements for writing, such as holding a pencil the right way, control, dexterity, coordination and posture, so the more practice, the better.

children's teachers for further information. Set a budget and stick to it by browsing through ads and pinpointing bargains. If possible, restrict the number of stores you go to and shop at a time when there will be less foot traffic. This will save you considerable time and frustration. Buy only what is needed and test every item for strength and durability. Make sure it will hold up to wear and tear, especially if for a younger child. If necessary, spend more for better items. You don't want to have to replace an item over and over throughout the year. Should you come up against a really good sale, buy a few extra items. You can stock these at home and use them as your children's supplies run out. These are a few tips for keeping the furor of purchasing school supplies down. Keep in mind that if you really detest shopping, you can always take the online route and buy everything you need from the comfort of your own home. It may cost you a bit extra, but avoiding the hassle of crowded stores and long checkout lines may make up for that.

Take Your Kids Shoe Shopping Before Settling On A Pair School will be starting soon, and you know what that meansyour kids are going to need new shoes. Of course, they probably already have their hearts set on some particular ones. Before you go out and buy them, consider taking your kids shoe shopping. They just might find some other shoes that they like better. Choose an appropriate time to take your kids shoe shopping. Don't go in the morning. Your kids may be fresh, but their feet won't have had time to swell. Take your kids in the afternoon, preferably after lunch and their nap, if they take one. You will want them to be alert and happy to try on shoes. If your kids detest shopping, take them to a store where the staff is accustomed to dealing with fussy kids and keep the trip short. Set a budget for your shoeshopping spree and stick to it. Kids' feet grow fast. Don't break the bank purchasing shoes for them that they will outgrow in six months. If your older kids beg for an expensive pair of shoes, strike a deal with them. Offer to give them their share of the budget and let them pay for any excess with their own money or money they earn from you by doing ex-
tra chores around the house. Look for shoes that are appropriate for kids. Select ones with laces or some other fastening system made of durable, breathable materials, like canvas or leather, which will keep your kids' feet cool and dry. Stay away from shoes with heels, which can be difficult for kids to walk in and could affect the development of their feet. Stick to shoes with thick, sturdy, even soles and flexible toes that will bend with your kids' feet. For more traction, choose shoes with patterned or textured soles. Have your kids try on several pairs of shoes and buy ones that fit. Get their feet measured. Most people have one foot that is larger than the other, so you will want to ensure that any shoes you buy for your kids fits their larger foot. To ensure the shoes fit, have your kids stand up and check that there is some room between their toes and the edge of the shoes and that the heel fits snugly. Make sure the shoes are comfortable as well. Kids don't have the time or patience to break in shoes. Don't try to cut corners and buy your kids a size larger of shoes on the premise that they will grow into them.
They could have trouble walking in the shoes and develop foot problems later. Finally, give your kids plenty of choices when shoe shopping. Don't demand that they stick to one brand or type of shoe. Allow them to try on a wide range of shoes and let them choose which ones to buy.
Stern Excited To Meet Darcey Students A Note From Darcey Principal Barbara Stern I am so pleased to welcome our new kindergarten students and our new and returning Early Intervention Center students to Darcey School for the 2010-2011 school year. The early years of school are so important for developing a strong foundation for learning and for
acquiring positive attitudes about ourselves as learners. The teachers and I work very hard to make the learning environment at Darcey a warm and nurturing place and also one that stimulates curiosity about the world around us. I know it will be an exciting year for everyone and the Darcey students will acquire many new skills needed for think-

THE CHESHIRE HERALD, AUGUST 12, 2010

Important Information Regarding Cheshire Bus Schedule The 2010-2011 school bus routes for Cheshire Public Schools and for the Cheshire students attending Wilcox Technical School, Sound School and St. Bridget’s School, and “Bus Route Instructions” are available on the Cheshire Public School’s – Transportation Office - Policy and Forms Web page at www. cheshire.k12.ct.us/transportation. Parents and students are asked to review the information on the post cards, which were mailed the week of August 9, 2010, in preparation for the first day of school on Monday, Aug. 30. 1. All times listed on the bus information postcards are tentative. Students should be at the appropriate stops approximately ten (10) minutes before the time listed since times may be adjusted during the first few weeks of school. 2. The Cheshire Public School bus schedules for the 2010-2011 school year have been established according to the enrollment information available as of August 6, 2010. The bus schedules are subject to revision due to enrollment changes such as transfers, address changes, or additional registrations. 3. Per Transportation Policy of the Cheshire Board of Education, students are to walk up to onehalf mile for kindergarten, up to one mile for grades one through six, up to one and one-half miles for grades seven through twelve. “Walking distance” means the linear measure from a point at the curb or edge of a public road at the student’s residence to a point at the nearest school building entrance; to a point at the near-
est, safe entrance to the school grounds located within 100 feet of the school building entrance; or to the bus pick-up/drop off area; or to the bus stop, if applicable. 4. All written requests for changes in the school bus routes and / or stops must be made using Cheshire’s “Petition Requesting School Transportation Accommodations” form. The form is available on the Cheshire Public Schools – Transportation Office - Policy and Forms Web page. Send the completed forms to: Supervisor of Fiscal / Transportation Services, Cheshire Public Schools, 29 Main Street, Cheshire, CT 06410. Please be sure the petitions include the student’s name, grade, address, bus number, school, and state clearly the problem that you wish corrected. The Cheshire Public School System appreciates your patience while we address the large number of requests for changes that are received at the beginning of the school year. Board of Education Policy 3541 states, “Bus routes shall be established to provide the safest and shortest routes as economically as possible.” Based on this combination, transportation requests are addressed with highest priority being the safety of students, followed by routing changes caused by road construction, assigning bus stops for new students, reducing the routes that take longer than 50 minutes after
the first two weeks of school, and inputting these changes into the computer system. 5. Due to the issues that must be addressed at the start of the school year, “Petitions Requesting The Use Of Available Seats On School Buses” forms received after August 16, 2010 will not be processed until September 16, 2010. 6. In addition, parents are asked to pay close attention to the following policy of the Board of Education. “Parents are responsible for the actions and safety of their children walking to and from bus stops and to and from school.” Please note that, when kindergarten students require bus transportation, parents should take them to the bus stop and wait with them and, later in the day, parents should wait at the bus stop to receive the students. 7. Wilcox Technical School and Sound School Students residing in a busing district for Cheshire High School will take the regular Cheshire High School bus scheduled for their area in the morning. At Cheshire High School, they will transfer to the Wilcox Bus or the Sound School Bus. Students residing within walking guidelines for Cheshire High School will walk to the high school in the morning. From the high school, they will take the Wilcox Bus to Wilcox or the Sound School Bus to the Sound School. Wilcox Tech

and Sound School students will be bused from Wilcox and the Sound School in the afternoon, according to an assigned afternoon bus stop. 8. When Cheshire Schools are closed for the day due to inclement weather, the Wilcox Tech and Sound School buses will not take students to Wilcox Technical School or the Sound School, even if either school opens that day. Math Remains Major Focus For New Year At St. Bridget A Note From St. Bridget Principal Marge Whalen Welcome to a new school year. It has been a fabulous summer and St. Bridget Catholic School has never been busier. We are finishing up with summer enrichment camps and our attention is turning to welcoming our 425 students from Cheshire and surrounding towns at the end of this month. This summer, we have continued to upgrade our technology with the addition of three new SMART Boards in various classrooms. The teachers are very excited to begin using these additional resources throughout all areas of the curriculum. Our Student Ministry program has continued to reach out to the greater community throughout the summer with the collection of school supplies for the ACT4 Ministry in Waterbury. Several new projects are being planned for the upcoming year including outreach to children in area hospitals. St. Bridget School is also pursuing National Blue Ribbon status for being a high performing
school. This honor is based partly upon our recent standardized test scores where our students in seventh grade scored over the 90 percentile rank in both reading and math. As we continue to prepare our students to be successful citizens to face the challenges of the 21st century, math will continue to be the goal with assemblies and programs intended to build upon skills and knowledge that are essential for our students. We will also be continuing our very successful fitness initiative with our “Movin’ with Recess” program in addition to our physical education classes. We look forward to seeing all of our returning families and extend a warm greeting to the new members of our St. Bridget School community. To all of our friends in Cheshire and beyond, we wish you all a very successful and happy school year filled with the joy of children’s voices and laughter reverberating throughout your buildings. Have a terrific year!
