As the sun shone down on the Maclary Athletic Complex on Friday, June 18, 398 Cheshire High School seniors, dressed in traditional cap and gown attire, took to the field for the final time as high school students. The ceremony, which lasted about two hours, featured awards, speeches, and, finally, the presentation of diplomas. Afterward, students huddled together with family and friends to take pictures, share memories, and contemplate four years spent at CHS. III, Caitlyn Elizabeth Carter, Ashley June Cavanaugh; Jordan M. Hello, everybody, thank you for coming. The mood here tonight is really quite something. Yup, mine’s a poem, and yes it’s quite cheesy, But it does have a point, and makes reading this easy. So if you can spare me a moment or two,
There are just a few words I’ll deliver to you. First, I like trivia, and so here’s a bit for you. I’m not the first Cunningham to stand here and bore you. My grandfather did this, some long, long while ago, I won’t try to outdo him, I cannot, I know.
To the Cheshire High School Class of 2010, we wish you well. As you graduated, we began to celebrate our 55th Reunion Weekend. We wish you the joy we had of growing up and, for some of us, spending our entire lives here in Cheshire. There were no cell phones, text messaging, computers, ball fields, tennis courts, or pool. Actually, for most of our youngest years, there was no television, either. We had a bowling alley, a movie theater, and ballroom dance classes on Friday nights. There was one grammar school—Humiston— with fourth grade in a two-room building heated by a coal stove located behind Cheshire Academy. There was a cow barn (with cows) about a block west of Humiston on Spring Street, and Merrill Moore’s father’s figg farm a couple of blocks north, where we learned to test eggs. There was one school bus. There were no super-

Regardless, I do have a few things to share, Before we get to the more regal fanfare. It is strange to believe that we’ve come all this way, And that finally, suddenly, ‘tall ends today. We have done all our work— well, sort of, at least. And so now we look forward to summer and peace. It’s been only four years yet we’ve learned quite a bit, From these textbooks and teachers and novels in lit. We’ve learned math—so much math—and our history, fine. Momentum, a mole, and to integrate “sine.” But they’re not important, I’m sorry, Ms. Alim. Most of us, sadly, can get by without them. You see, life isn’t marked with significant digits, There’s no algorithm, no data to fidget. There are many more lessons of greater import That don’t come with syllabi or progress reports. There are not any finals, they come to no ends, As this sort of lesson the classroom transcends. They can often be tricky, often frustrating. This is a fact that needs no de-
markets or shopping malls. Life was good. We spent the early 1940s with air raid wardens, dark green shades in our homes, and the possibility of having to turn all the lights off at night if the air raid sirens sounded. There was no high school in Cheshire for us after leaving Humiston, so we parted ways after nine years together, only to be reunited (for many of us) at the new Cheshire High School in our junior year. We wish you the lasting friendship of classmates. We were a very small class by today’s standards—72 seniors—and have been blessed with 55 years of enduring friendships that took us through the triumphs and tragedies of all our lives. We know how fortunate we are to have been the first CHS family. Yours truly, The Class of 1955

bating. And, thus, is the reason for this foolish rhyme. I’d like to believe it’s some insight of mine: Don’t take life too grimly, there’s just not a point. Too much gravitas will result in disjoint. No one knows this better than any young kid, Just remember all of the great things you once did. You don’t have to act young, that’s not what I’m saying. Just don’t be afraid to be laughter displaying. It’s marvelous really, what humor can do, When the world and her hardships fall down upon you. For there will be times when you think defeat you’ll admit. When you’ll scream that there’s no putting up with this…stuff. When this might happen, I suggest you relax. A joke and a chuckle show far better tact. Seek shelter and comfort in something like Seuss, For through nonsense and humor our strife will diffuse. How much easier life, when taken more lightly, And happier when our pain is lessened just slightly. For my part that’s just about all I can say, And I know that it’s more than a little cliché.
But that’s the whole truth that is what I now know, And I wish I had known it four long years ago. Find something that can always lighten your mood, And seek it out always when you pout or brood. And so, having told all my advice to you, I’ll wrap up my welcome without further ado. Tonight you’ll be privileged to several great speeches. Please listen as each one a life lesson teaches. Then after, that’s it! We are finally done! This is now your chance to grow into someone. So, congrats! Twenty ten, we have made it this far. For after we leave here, the near future is ours. Thus onward! And upward! And forward! And out! You’re off to great places, I haven’t a doubt! But, as you head to the world that’s out there, My dear friends of this fact you must always beware. It won’t always be easy and often not fun, But it’s always worth it when over and done. So step back when it’s hard every once and a while, And breathe out, just relax, and begin with a smile. Good luck, class of 2010.

Salutatorian Speech
Good evening, members of the Board of education, dr. Florio, Principal ryan, administration faculty, staff, parents, and fellow students. it is an honor to speak to you this evening! When I first sat down to write this speech, i had no idea what i would say. i am supposed to summarize these past four years and these past 13 years of school. to that, i ask, how can i summarize this vast expanse of experience in just a few short minutes? how do we define four years of our lives? these past years, in which we have learned and grown tremendously, in which we have shared
so many memories, happy, sweet, and sad; these years elude definition and description. as a class, we have achieved so much. We have made it through the many challenges that these past four years have thrown at us. We are all are here today, receiving our diplomas, despite of these challenges and because of them. each of us has been successful, and are here today recognizing our accomplishments. But, what is success? just as the last four years have defied definition, I cannot find an adequate definition for success, either. Paradoxically, this graduation is symbolic of our success

in high school, and yet success is such an elusive idea to pin down. is success a rung on the social ladder, a salary, a GPa, a rank, a title, an award? Or, is it satisfaction for a project you have slaved over for hours? a day spent volunteering? a job done well? a friendship? earlier in my high school career, i thought success was a very concrete idea. Get good grades in school. Go to a prestigious university. Get a high paying job, and the respect of our peers. isn’t that the kind of success that we are told will make us happy? therefore i strove to achieve and to succeed. i focused on grades, concrete things i believed were symbols of my success. and, by that standard, i was successful. However, I found that this definition was inadequate. in my search for what i had believed to be success, i had forgotten other important things: my friends. My family. Pursuing the activities i loved. and, as i continued my way through high school, i discovered that perhaps success wasn’t as simple to define as I first thought. Where in my definition of success was room for the teacher who gave up a high-paying job to follow his passion for mentor-

Emily Bauer ing? the girl whose grades may not have been extraordinary, but whose kindness and compassion improved the lives of everyone around her? the boy who overcomes the challenges life throws at him to simply make it through each day? even now, standing here at this podium, i have not been able to come up with a definition of success that satisfies the many forms that it can take. We have all succeeded so far; our successes have culminated in this graduation. But it seems that, in the coming chapters of our lives, we each must continue to define success for ourselves. Perhaps, for some of us, success will take the traditional form of our academic achievements

and our careers. For others, it will take a form unique to our passions and our skills. Now, we each have the opportunity to further write our own definitions. I know that I am excited to discover my own. For this opportunity, i would like to thank the wonderful teachers, staff, and administration of chs. you have given us an incredible foundation to begin our search for how we may each be successful. your support, guidance, and the knowledge you have imparted to us will be invaluable during the journey ahead. congratulations and the best of luck to the class of 2010. “The question for each man to settle is not what he would do if he had means, time, influence and educational advantages; the question is what he will do with the things he has. The moment a young man ceases to dream or to bemoan his lack of opportunities and resolutely looks his conditions in the face, and resolves to change them, he lays the corner-stone of a solid and honorable success.” — hamilton Wright Mabie

Valedictorian Speech
Members of the Board of education, dr. Florio, Principal ryan, administrators, faculty, staff, parents, relatives, friends, and fellow students—i am so incredibly honored to be speaking to you all today. after cheering on my friends at three graduations since entering high school, i can’t tell you how thrilled I am that finally, it’s our turn. as excited as i am about the future, i’ll admit, i’m a little nervous as well, and i know i’m not alone in that respect. We might not feel it now, it might not even kick in until the moment we have to say our final goodbyes, but i’m sure the thought of such a giant transition is a little intimidating to all of us. Perhaps we’re afraid of not yet knowing exactly where we’re headed in life. Or, maybe we’re afraid that even if we do, we might have chosen the wrong paths for ourselves. Perhaps there’s also the fear of being separated from the people we love, the fear that they’ll forge on and replace us or that we won’t be able to replace them. But, when encountering change in our lives, such fears are
universal. it is how we ultimately choose to surmount them, if we do at all, that determines the types of people we will become. Four years ago, i entered high school nervous, timid, and ashamed of my stutter. in my quest for perfection, i was slowly losing myself to fear. cold, heartpounding, stomach-churning fear. i realized only later that i had stepped aside and let my fears control my life. i was living a mere shadow of my true self rather than risk exposing my vulnerabilities. i’m sure that most of you have felt scared or nervous sometime in high school, too. it doesn’t have to be something as extreme as being stuck on an island with polar bears and a smoke monster like on “lost.” Maybe it was the very first day of high school, or asking someone out that you really liked, or that crucial final at the end of junior year, or your first time driving down a busy street. just ask my dad— he’ll tell you how scared he and i both were during that. We’ve dealt with some of the
Graduation 2010
biggest challenges of our lives and overcome obstacles that seemed insurmountable. Now, here we are on the other side, all in one piece and, i hope, generally happy with where we are now. Four years ago, i would have sooner leapt off this stage and bolted out of here than speak to a crowd of a thousand-plus people. even now, i haven’t completely ruled that out yet, but i’ve since learned that encountering challenges is a necessary part of life and that embracing all of these difficulties is the only way to truly come to terms with them, no matter how daunting that initially seems. you see, i haven’t bolted and for someone who used to duck out of every opportunity for public speaking, i’d say that’s a pretty vast improvement in itself. high school has taught me more than i can even put into words, not only about how to stare down my fears, but how to laugh at them, how to throw away my worry over how others perceive me and how to accept and love myself.

Katherine Han i hope you, too, realize it’s okay to have flaws, to live freely without feeling the compulsion to hide them, and to surround yourself with people who know that you aren’t perfect, but who love you exactly because of that. Fear may be one of the strongest emotions but, in the end, it’s what makes us the strongest. Whichever road we choose, there will be challenges lying before us that may worry or frighten us, that may even make us stop and reconsider the direction we’ve chosen, but that does not mean we should turn around and settle
for safety. i hope we are all able to live our lives without regrets, to live our lives fearlessly. So as you take your first cautious steps into the real world, keep your chin up and don’t be afraid of the dark, the threatening, the unknown. smile and congratulate yourself on having overcome so much already. and, if ever in doubt, remember that instead of a one-man wolf pack, we are a 400-person wolf pack, and we will not be so easily frightened. thank you and congratulations.

Commencement Speech
Good evening members of the Board of education, dr. Florio, Mr. ryan, administrators, teachers, family, friends and most importantly, fellow graduates. We are gathered here tonight to celebrate the graduation of the class of 2010. We once hoped for a smooth journey with crossed fingers; now we have finally made it to the night for which we have all been waiting. i hope you are as grateful as i am to have shared time in the cheshire school system with a group not only highly talented and accomplished, but also, i am certain, one of the kindest and friendliest classes to pass through the halls of chs. i would not trade the memories i hold with this class for anything. We have all grown up together for the past 13 years, and it is hard to believe how quickly things have changed. it did not hit me how much times have changed until a month and a half ago; a group of fifth and sixth graders i coach at Park & rec. were confused by my references to the Spice Girls, N*SYNC, and Hanson. they had never heard of the groups which had been the staples of our childhoods. We grew up singing along to “tearing up My heart” and “Mmmbop”; what exactly “Mmmbop” means we may never know, but now, as we leave, this young new generation is taking our place by fist pumping to “TiK ToK.” To say our class has experienced a lot in our childhood
would be an understatement. We witnessed the coming of the millennium and that entire Y2K scare. We also accepted the invention of the iPod and we’ve been plugged in ever since. We saw a lot during our elementary school years, good and bad; however, we were not united as a single class until we entered dodd. Our time in dodd was very short and sweet. We explored the nation’s capital and danced the night away at class night, all while meeting the exciting new people with whom we would be spending the next couple of years. then we entered the high school with our different cliques and fears, and now we are leaving as one class that has conquered chs. i am sure we all have our special memories of each other. Whether it was that fun class with your favorite teacher or that field trip to Hammonasset freshman year, where we all got the worst sunburns of our lives all while having fun. it could even be any quirky advisory room traditions or renaming the senior walk, “cunningham square,” Most importantly, however, is the amount of preparation the classes at chs have provided us. Math and science confused us all to no end, while lit and social studies worked us to the bone with the endless essays and dBQs. all of the electives taught us equally valuable lessons, while also adding to the pile of work. the language courses taught us so much

Alessandra Pulit about culture with their special traditions, whether it be meeting exchange students, the japanese marketplace, the spain and Quebec trips, or a very fun, but very cold day at holiday hill for latin day. many visits to our guidance counselors who saw us at our worst and guided us in making our final decisions for college, the work force, or military service. One thing i loved most about this class is our drive to excel not only academically, but also athletically, artistically, theatrically, and more. so, after four years of lab reports, essays, multiple state championships, and april Fools pranks, we now find ourselves sitting on this field tonight full of pride, and further on the road to the rest of our lives. We leave cheshire high school tonight on our way with excitement and hearts full of memories. thank you, parents, for guiding and challenging us; without your unconditional love, support, and teachings, we would not be the incredible class we are. to dr. Florio, Mr. ryan, the administration and teachers, without you the university of route 10 would not have helped us grow and be ready to move on. Before i close, i have one last thing to say to my fellow classmates. thank you for the wonderful ride; it got a little heated at times, and all of us have helped each other create who we are today. One lesson we can take from each other is that no matter what “Friends, friends, friends, they got you, that’s what friends are for, what are friends, we’re all friends.” i wish all of you the best of luck in everything from college to employment to the honor of serving our country, and for one last time i ask you… t What?! (tenacious ’10!) congratulations 2010 and good luck.
