Wedding Menus Accommodate Vegetarians

erhaps you are a vegetarian, your beloved is a vegetarian, and/or many of your friends and family are vegetarians. So, the matter is settled: you will serve vegetarian foods at your wedding. You may do es, you may want to serve a vegan this in one of two wedding cake free of eggs, butter, ways. Let close fam- and milk. ily members know and ask them to spread the word, or include the information on your invitations. Note that a vegetarian reception will follow the ceremony and include the vegetarian choices on the response card. This will ensure that your guests will know what to expect and prevent conflict ordisappointment later. As for the foods you serve, you should do your best to provide a mix of the familiar and unfamiliar. When surrounded by foods they know—such as breads, pastas, soups, and salads—guests might be more willing to try unusual selections like mung bean cakes or spinach and artichoke bruschetta. You may have the food catered or make it yourself. Should you decide to have the food catered, you may hire a caterer or a restaurant specializing in vegetarian foods. Either way, communication is a must. Meet with individuals involved frequently to discuss the menu and make sure it works for you. Make suggestions and provide recipes. Should you decide to do the food yourself, you will need to start planning right away. Collect some recipes and make out a menu. Then, arrange for some helpers to assist you in preparing the food. Do as much as possible before your big day and have your helpers finish whatever remains. This will allow you to enjoy your wedding. Depending upon your preferences, you may want to serve a vegan wedding cake free of eggs, butter, and milk, which are made from animal products. If you’re lucky, you will find a bakery with experience in this. If not, you may have to get a recipe and find a baker willing to use it. Serving vegetarian food at your wedding will take some time and effort. It will all be worth it in the end, though, when everyone leaves with a full stomach and a smile on their face.

Small Weddings Can Present Big Challenges
W
hile some couples go all out and invite everyone they know to their wedding, others opt for a smaller, more intimate affair. Although they can be less costly, small weddings are not always easy to pull off. Whittling the guest list to a select few can be difficult and cause conflict among family members. If you would like to keep your wedding small, be aware of the pitfalls and approach the initial planning with tact. You must decide first just how small you want your wedding to be: 10 people, 20 to 40 people, 100 people? The smaller your guest list, the more lightly you will have to tread. There will be people who expect to be invited who will be hurt and angry when they do not receive an invitation. Consider having a large bridal shower or postwedding party for everyone not invited to your wedding. Depending upon how small your target number is, you may have to make some hard decisions like excluding extended family or children from your guest list. Whatever your decision, be prepared for conflict. There may be some hurt feelings and even pressure to change your mind and have a larger wedding. Don’t give in—it is your wedding. After you have completed your guest list, make a list of everyone you couldn’t invite and find a way to let them know why they weren’t invited. Send a note, shoot them an e-mail, or give them a call. If you intend to have a large bridal shower, you may be able to wait until then to let everyone know that you will be having a small wedding. When informing others of your decision, be tactful. Let them know that, while you would have liked to invite everyone, you chose not to for personal, financial, or other reasons. Reassure them that they are still very much a part of your life and thank them for everything they have done for you. Choosing to have a small wedding is easy; implementing the idea, on the other hand, takes work. Be prepared and forge ahead with a smile on your face.

Be It A Live Band Or DJ, Music Sets The Mood
W
hether just a CD or a live band, most couples choose to incorporate music into their wedding ceremony and reception. A wedding without music would seem strange, wouldn’t it? Music may be recorded or live. Some couples hire a DJ to play recorded music, while others choose to have CDs played over a stereo system at the venue. Some couples hire a band or orchestra, while
others hire a singer or guitarist to perform acoustically. For many couples, acoustic music adds a unique element to their wedding. If this is the route you choose, here are some tips for hiring a musician. You should start by selecting the songs you want to have played at your wedding. This will give you some idea as to the genre, which, in turn, will give you some idea as to the type of musician to hire. If See MAKING, page 12

new Beginnings Making A Musical Choice
w e dd i n g s
continued from page 11 much of what you select is rock, you probably don’t want to hire a harpist or flutist, as the music won’t suit the instruments. A guitarist or pianist, on the other hand, might work well. Once you have an idea of what type of musician you need for the music you want played, you can start looking for one. Ask family and friends for recommendations. Check with music teachers and local colleges. Look at the listings in the phone book and online. Set up phone interviews with each of the candidates on your list and find out if they are interested, and available the times you need them. Ask about fees and requirements. The answers to these questions should help you narrow your choices considerably. Once you have a few candidates in mind, set up faceto-face interviews with them. Find out all of the details and ask for a sample of their work. Go over the song list with them and make sure they can play the selections you want. Arrange to go to one of their performances or set up a time when they can give you a quick audition. This will enable you to see them perform. When you are ready to hire a musician, work up a contract. Do not make a verbal agreement. Get the agreement in writing with all of the terms listed. This will ensure you get what you pay for. Hiring a musician to play at your wedding is no different than hiring any other professional. Do your homework and get the right person for the job.
