Interior Decorating Staging Your Home Essential To Making A Sale
submitted photo
A local household’s dining room (top) was transformed into a more inviting atmosphere (above) by PJ & Company Homestyling. by Josh Morgan herald staff the old phrase is the home is where your heart is and, wherever that may be, the place where your mail is delivered is usually the place where you live and spend a majority of your time. everyone has a favorite part of their house. Whether it's the
kitchen where many wonderful meals were cooked, or the living room, where you watched your favorite team with a championship, there's a part of the home that is above all else. regardless, there is also usually a part that isn't your favorite: the outdated bathroom, the under-utilized den, cluttered spare bedroom. Fortunately, there are services
available to homeowners who are looking to spruce up their living conditions, or get their house ready to sell in the event of a move. there are little things, such as a fresh coat of paint, or big things, such as finishing a basement, that can transform a house and make it feel new again, or make it more attractive to a potential buyer. Patti stern, with PJ & company home styling, specializes in home staging and interior design. according to stern, sometimes a homeowner gets overwhelmed when tackling a project, and that's where a professional can step in and lend a helping hand. "First thing is they need to prioritize. What room do you live in the most," stern said. "then, set yourself a budget and be realistic. Kitchens and bathrooms cost money to upgrade, but painting is a wonderful way to transform any room in your home." Katie samuelson, with samuelson interior design, said that during her most recent consultations, homeowners are taking the bull by the horns and are attempting to do some of the work themselves. according to samuelson, some people need "just a bit of advice" to set them off in the right direction. "People are looking for guidance now, especially in a tight economy," samuelson said. "it used to be more traditional, where someone would have an interior designer to do the entire project. Now, it's sort of like an a la carte service.” Only if for a few hours, samuelson said an interior decorator can help a homeowner figure out the best way to makeover their home. Whether it is color swatches or furniture layout, samuelson said there are things to be done to

make a home more appealing to the owner, or a buyer. Now, with busy schedules, samuelson said she is offering online designs, where people can email her photos and dimensions of their homes and she put together a list of services electronically. "it's really a new thing, not many people are doing that right now, it's kind of a specific service for someone," samuelson said. "Online design is new, but we can help with layouts in that way." stern also handles home staging, where she sets up a person's home by "taking their personality out of it" and preparing it for sale. she said that she "neutralizes" a home to make sure as many people as possible could envision themselves living there. "You don't want people to walk in, see your wallpaper, and say 'what is going on in here' and be
immediately turned off," stern said. "they then might miss out on the other great parts of your home." While it's tough to do this, because many people are "attached to their homes," it needs to be done to make the home appeal to everyone. the difference between decorating and staging is the lack of personality, but it's important when trying to sell a house. also, stern said small things, such as uncluttering a room or rearranging "always helps." the biggest thing to remember is there are easy things to do, that aren't too expensive, such as adding new throw pillows, depending on the season, to change the look of a home. "What's important is that it's not about anyone's style, but your own," stern said. "Just enjoy your home and be comfortable."

Some Easy Steps To Make Entryways Inviting
G
ot a nice entryway, but not sure what to do with it? set up a small table by the door where everyone can drop their keys and mail and that's about it? Make the
most of your entryway by turning it into a usable space. although typically small, entryways make wonderful spaces for a variety of activities from
reading to listening to music. in order to determine what would make the best use of your entryway, you need to think about your needs. could you and your family use a place to read? could you use a place to work on the laptop? could you use a place to display collectibles? along with your needs, you must consider the dimensions and layout of the space. You may need a place to read, but if there is no room for a comfy chair or love seat, that idea may not work. the entryway may be more suitable for the display of collectibles, especially if it has a lot of wall space. imagine having your spouse's entire collection of antique fishing lures hanging in the
entryway. What an impressive welcome that would make to visitors. You also need to consider the traffic your entryway receives. If people are forever coming in and out of your front door, you may not want to turn it into a cozy reading or computer nook. how in the world would you ever get anything done? a buffet area for party nights or a mini game room with a drop-leaf card table, on the other hand, might be more suitable. Whatever purpose you decide to have your entryway serve, make sure you decorate it accordingly. if it's going to be a music room, tuck the piano under the stairs and provide some chairs
for listening. add a light above the piano and a basket for sheet music. hang up some inspiring prints, and voila, your music room entryway is complete. If your entryway flows into another room, you may want to go with a complementary color scheme to keep the décor consistent. if it does not, feel free to use whatever color scheme you want to enhance the function of the room and invoke the appropriate mood. don't forget in all of the rearranging that your entryway still serves as an entrance to your home. Make sure guests feel welcome and have a mat to wipe their See LARGE, page 9

Use Metallic Paint To Add A Little Glitter Y
our bedroom is looking a little tired and could use some sprucing up. You'd like to start with the wall color. although it looks fine, that dull beige just isn't cutting anymore. Perhaps you could spice it up with some metallic paint. that's right. Paint now comes in a metallic finish, and not just in silver and gold. You can find purple metallic paint, blue metallic paint, green metallic paint and so forth, and you can use it to add drama and depth to any room. Metallic paint can be expensive, so you need to use it efficiently. Before you begin working with metallic paint, read the manufacturer's directions. Find out what is the best way to apply
it and follow the directions to the letter. Working with metallic paint can be a little more difficult than working with traditional paint, so you must do your homework. Metallic paint will refract light and reveal any nicks, bumps and cracks in the walls, so you need to take care of those first. When the walls have been adequately prepped, paint them in a color that resembles the metallic paint. this will provide for better, easier coverage later. Once the base coat has dried, you can start applying the metallic paint. to keep the paint workable, use a paint extender. Work in small sections and paint in strips with a roller. Use a 1/4-inch roller for a smooth finish and a long-nap
roller for a textured finish. To prevent lap marks, always work on wet paint. roll back and forth to align the metallic pigments, making sure your last stroke goes in one direction. then move onto the next strip. as you make your way around the room, make sure all of your final strokes on each strip run in the same direction and cut in as needed with a brush. When finished, give the metallic paint ample time to dry. if you see too many lap marks and flaws, you may want to add a coat of glaze on top. Metallic paint can add a touch of sparkle to any room. Just make sure you know how to use it. the better the application, the more pleasing the results will be.

Change Out Your Tile Floor You've been working on your
home for years, and you've saved the best task for last: replacing your kitchen floor. That grungy white ceramic tile has got to go. it won't be easy, but it's got to be done. the time has come for you to roll up your sleeves and get ready to do some hard labor. You will need to gather the proper equipment first. Safety gear is a must. You must wear goggles to protect your eyes from
flying shards of tile and kneepads and gloves to protect your knees and hands from bruising as you dispose of the old tile and crawl around on the floor. The tile is too worn to save, so your best course of action is to break it up with a small sledgehammer and a towel. You will also need a scraper, either a hand or power one, and some floor-leveling compound. to remove the tile, place a towel over a section of it and use
the sledgehammer to break it up. then remove all remaining pieces and adhesive with a hand scraper. If you have a rather large floor, you may want to rent a power scraper. the sharp blade will get under the tile and break it up more easily. When you have finished removing all of the tile, sweep up all of the residue and dispose of See REMOVING, page 8

he sofa in your sunroom has definitely seen better days. The cushions sag, the fabric is stained, and the pillows are torn. The time has come to throw it out, right? Maybe, but then again, maybe not. Take a good look at that sofa. Is the construction solid? If so, then having it reupholstered might be the more cost-effective solution. Before you start looking for fabric, inspect your sofa carefully. Is the frame sturdy? Is it free of rot, mildew and other signs of water damage? Are the springs in good condition? If so, it might be worth saving and make a good candidate for reupholstering. If you have no experience in reupholstering, you will probably want to hire someone to do the job for you. Look for an upholsterer just like you would any other professional. Get recommendations from friends and family, conduct interviews and ask to see a sample of their work. Check out references, compare pricing and choose the one that
works best for you. Once you have found an upholsterer, have them check out your sofa and make sure it is suitable for reupholstering. If they give you the go-ahead, you may start the search for fabric. Depending upon shape of the piece and your tastes, you may have your sofa reupholstered in one or more fabrics. Check with your upholsterer. They may have some suggestions and perhaps even some samples to show you. If not, shop at stores that sell upholstery fabric and select several suitable for your décor that will hold up to wear and tear and resist stains. Keep
in mind that the more texture in the fabric, the better it will hide stains. You will need several yards of fabric, 20 or more, so pay attention to the price per yard. Ask for samples of the fabrics you choose. That way, you can see how they will look in your sunroom at various times of the day. Once you have selected fabric, speak to your upholsterer. They may be able to order it for you at a discount. If they can't, they should be able to tell you how much to purchase. Once you have selected fabric, See UPHOLSTERY, page 8

Lots Of Options When Looking For A New Sink B
it by bit, you've been updating your kitchen, refacing the cabinets, repainting the walls and replacing the light fixtures. You've ordered new countertops, and while installing those, you'd also like to replace your sink. the cast iron sink currently in your kitchen has seen better days. Not only is it old, but it's stained and just doesn't work for all of the cooking you do. the time has come to go shopping, and get ready, the number of choices available will astound you. there are many types of kitch-
en sinks on the market today, and the materials they are made of vary just as much as the styles. some of the more common styles include: • Farmhouse sinks these have an apron and can sit on top of the coun-
tertop or be mounted underneath. they are generally fairly deep. • Prep sinks. these are fairly small and serve as a second sink. they work well for homeowners who entertain a lot or have more than one cook in the family.
• Trough sinks. there are long and lean and allow for more than one faucet and drain, making them convenient for kitchens with multiple cooks. • Seamless sinks. these are part of the actual countertops, providing for a seamless look. they also eliminate the crevice between sink and countertop, making cleanup a breeze. • Undermount sinks. these are designed to fit under the countertop, making cleanup easier. homeowners simply wipe whatever debris is on the countertop into the sink.
• Vessel sinks. these sit on top of the countertop, and because they are higher, require less bending over. although once reserved for bathrooms, vessel sinks are now being designed specifically for kitchens. these are just some of the more common sink choices. You are sure to come across more, including the traditional sink, which sits on the countertop. You will also find sinks made of a variety of materials from stainless steel and copper to natural stone and porcelain to go with any décor.

Interior Decorating Now Is The Time To Buy That New Table And Chairs Y
ou've wanted to buy a new dining room table and chairs for years, but for one reason or another, you never got around to it. Well, the time has finally come. You've already promised your old table and chairs to friends, so you have no choice but to go out and purchase new ones. here are some tips. Obviously, you want a table that will fit your space and provide plenty of room for guests to sit down and eat. Measure the space where you plan to put the table first, taking into account that you will need ample room for guests to move around it. then count the number of people who will be using the table regularly. You will need approximately 24 to 30 inches of room per person. Both of these figures should give you some idea of the size of table you should buy. depending upon the parameters of the space, you may want a round, square, rectangular or oblong table. with chairs. some do not. if you have selected a table without chairs, then you will need to shop for chairs. You will find many types of chairs to go with your dining room table. common styles include Parsons, Queen anne, Windsor, regency, empire, chippendale and ladderback. depending upon your design preferences and the table style you have selected, one chair style may appeal more to you than others. Whatever style you choose, make sure the chairs have fairly upright backs with strong, sturdy legs, which will allow guests
plenty of support as they eat. Note the position of the chair arms as well. they should be low enough that guests can slide the chairs under the table easily. these are just some of the areas you should concentrate on in your search for a dining room table and chairs. You may have other concerns as well, depending upon your situation and preferences. if you plan to use the table just for special occasions, for example, you may be able to focus on a completely different range of styles than you would if you plan to use the table everyday. Good luck in your shopping.
Removing Tile Takes Time sit down at the tables that interest you and make sure you are comfortable. check that the table is sturdy and strong. lean on it at various angles. if you detect any sign of weakness in the table, pass on it and continue shopping. Consider the material and finish of the table as well. tables can be made of any number of materials from metal and glass to wood. Wooden tables can be bleached, painted, lacquered, stained, waxed or finished in any number
of ways. Find out how well the material and finish will stand up to everyday wear and tear. some materials and finishes are hardier than others. teak is harder than pine, for example. Shellac finishes are not as durable as paint finishes. If you plan to use your table frequently and have young kids, you may want to avoid selecting a table made of fragile material with a delicate finish. some dining room tables come

Learn As Much As Possible Before Going Cottage F
or years, you favored country décor, but lately you've been leaning more toward cottage style. You like the touch of romance the style brings to a room. slowly but surely, you would like to change out the décor in your home from country to cottage, but first, you need to learn more about cottage style. although similar to country décor, cottage style is lighter and airier. White plays a predominant role, with many furniture pieces painted or slip-covered in white. Pale blues, greens, yellows, pinks and purples are also used in cottage-style rooms. Fabrics may be old or new. Quilts are a favorite for cottagestyle bedrooms, and window treatments are usually sheer to allow light to flood in. Florals may be paired with stripes or solids, and most rooms are layered in a
variety of textiles, including lace, ruffles and handmade needlework. Fabrics are unified through color, with one to two colors running throughout each. Furniture may run the gamut from brand-new overstuffed pieces to distressed pieces. cot-
tage-style furniture often comes from various places and is unified through paint and fabric. It is not uncommon to find a mix of wicker, iron and wooden pieces in rooms. Outdoor furniture may be brought in to lend a natural touch.
accessories are usually personal, with collections of family photos, jewelry and other mementos splashed across the rooms. Fresh flowers in old pitchers add warmth to tables, while candles help create a romantic feel. Old plates, trays, teacups and
saucers add to the vintage look, while old birdhouses, wheelbarrows and garden tools help bring the outdoors in. cottage style is a mix of the old and new, and the more layered and cozier rooms feel, the better. cottage style is all about comfort.

Interior Decorating Spend Time Sprucing Up White Walls A
fter months of searching, you and your roommates have finally found a house to rent. Nestled in a quiet neighborhood, the house's interior has been updated with fresh paint. the color of choice, of course, is white, and much to your chagrin, the owner will not allow you to repaint. White it is, but not to worry. You can add in pops of color to really jazz up the place. One of the first things that might come to mind is buying a load of colorful furniture. Beware of this, though. Whatever pieces you invest in now will most cer-
tainly go with you to your next place where you might be able to paint the walls. Opt for nice neutral pieces instead that will work with any décor in the coming years. You've got white walls and neutral furniture, so where does the color come in? One of the easiest, most inexpensive ways is through your selection of fabric and textiles. like the color red? toss some red pillows onto your caramel suede sofa and a red throw on your chocolate recliner. add a bright red rug underfoot, and voila, you've got instant col-
or. Got some chairs that have seen better days? sew a slipcover for them, or better yet, reupholster them with colorful fabric. Need more artwork? drape a canvas with a favorite fabric, tack it in place and presto, you have instant color on your walls. another way to punch up your space is to use colorful accessories. Cut some flowers from your garden and put them into a colorful vase on your coffee table, or clip some branches and stack them in the umbrella stand by your front door. to stay on budget, look for colorful accesso-
ries at flea markets and discount stores. spray-paint anything you don't like and purchase artwork from budding artists or frame colorful wallpaper scraps. For even more color, paint all of your plain artwork frames. don't overlook lighting in your quest for color. Polish tarnished brass fixtures. Change out white lampshades for more colorful ones. replace old fan globes with bright, stylish models. add some brightly colored pull chains to plain metal lamps. By limiting color to your fabrics, textiles, accessories and
lighting, you can change your color palette fairly easily and inexpensively whenever you want. tired of red? switch to a cool shade of blue or yellow in your fabrics, textiles, accessories and lighting components.
Quality Products Key To New England Bedroom’s Success New England Bedroom Gallery 1199 Meriden-Waterbury Rd. (Rt. 322) Southington, CT (860) 620-0901 People often ask how i can compete with the big furniture stores. My approach is simple: sell a good product at a competitive price and pay careful attention to service. in other words, give the customer a good value for their dollar. although the bigger stores may get a lower wholesale price, they have enormous operating expenses. they have big warehouse expenses. For their show-
rooms, they employ floor managers, store managers, regional managers, district managers, and CEOs. Then, there's office staff, salespeople, commissions, and incentives, and a large overhead to operate the showrooms. all of these expenses are built into the price you pay. compare--oftentimes products of the same quality cost less here because we don't have to put a massive markup on our goods. Never mind the high pressure and sales gimmicks they use. Just say no. then, shop and compare. You can always go back. When you come into New england Bedroom Gallery, you can
expect to find bedroom furniture and mattresses for almost every budget, including our specialty: custom-made solid hardwood bedrooms that are made in america. it is not our mission to sell the absolute cheapest furniture we can find. it is more important to us to sell a dependable product, that we believe in, at a fair price. We don't have quotas to meet, and we will never pressure you to buy. When you come in, you can expect friendly service and honest advice. take advantage of our experience in the furniture industry. We have over 26 years in business, millions in sales, and

Interior Decorating Honor America With Decor
Y
ou like to shop at flea markets, and as you walk through the booths on weekends, you find yourself drawn to objects that reflect a sense of patriotism. Sometimes it's something small like a red, white and blue pot, while at other times it's something large like an old flag. You love all
things americana and would like to decorate one of the rooms in your home in that style. americana style is extremely versatile. the traditional theme is patriotic in nature and incorporates the colors of red, white and blue. Other themes may reflect a time in american life like the
1950s or a particular location like the New Jersey seaboard and feature colors relating to that. if you are going for a traditional americana feel, you will want to select a color palette based on red, white and blue. these can be the actual tones used on the American flag or more subdued tones like maroon, beige and light blue. to prevent the room from looking too busy, you should use one color as the base and the others as accents. Hardwood flooring makes as a great backdrop for a traditional american room and adds an air of authenticity. Most homes built during colonial times fea-
tured wide-planked oak or pine floors. However, for comfort and warmth, you may prefer to stick to carpet. Furnishings for traditional americana rooms need not be formal. in fact, simple, unpretentious pieces are often preferred because they reflect the décor of homes during the birth of the nation. Whitewashed pieces work well as do homespun pieces. antiques of the time like a spinning wheel or old chair often add a touch of fancy. With the paint, flooring and furnishings in place, it's time to start loading the room with accessories. Here's where all of your flea
market finds will come in handy. Remember that pot and flag you bought? Bring them in and all of the pieces of americana you have stashed around your home. Place them around the room and show off your national pride. creating an americana room is not hard, and once you do it, you may want to take the style farther and incorporate it into other rooms in your home. Just remember, you don't have to stick to the traditional patriotic room. You can move into new territory and create a Floridian paradise in your sunroom or a '50s diner in your kitchen. it's your choice, so have fun!
