Revisit Childhood Memories At Barker Museum T

he Barker Character, Comic and Cartoon Museum houses one of the largest collections of cartoonthemed toys and artifacts in the United States. Families travel from around the world to view toys from 1873, tin toys from the 1930s, cereal boxes from the 1950s, and 1,000 lunchboxes manufactured between 1930 and 2000. Every item that has played a part in an American childhood is here, from fast-food toys to Disney — even an eight-foottall Hulk for a unique photo opportunity! Visitors receive a free souvenir and a booklet of facts and floor plans to guide them through the museum. Each item is tagged with its name,

date of manufacture, and market value so that our guests can search for the toys they

remember and see what they would be worth today—if they hadn’t destroyed them as kids. Though not for sale, seeing those old toys brings back priceless memories. Visitors are free to take as long as they like to view the toys, play our trivia game along Connecticut’s largest

cartoon mural, visit cartoon characters around the extensive grounds and stop by the adjacent Barker Animation Art Gallery, one of the few remaining animation art galleries in the country. The museum is open Wednesday through Saturday from 12 to 4 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children ages 2 to 12, and free for babies. For a preview, visit www. barkermuseum.com or watch two video tours on YouTube by typing in “Barker Museum.” The Barker Character, Comic and Cartoon Museum is located at 1188 Highland Ave. (Route 10) in Cheshire. Call (203) 272-2357 for more information.

Damaged items should not be installed for use. Make sure heaters are properly ventilated and all electrical equipment is properly grounded, bonded, protected by GFCI circuits and up to code. If a cord is frayed, replace it. If you are unsure, call a professional technician or electrician. Install and inspect fences, self-closing and latching gates, and baby barrier fencing. Check pool alarms and keep life rings, hooks, and other rescue equipment near the pool. Make sure there are adequate and safe entry and exit ladders and handrails at both ends of the pool.

Check water chemistry at least twice weekly. Sanitized water keeps bacteria and illness at bay and protects your family from germs. Water clarity aids in identifying swimmers in distress. Kids & Family: Use the “buddy system.” Never swim alone even if you are a good swimmer. If you are not, get skilled by learning to swim at your local YMCA. Learn CPR. The Red Cross has an excellent water safety

program and CPR course. Take the time to learn CPR. If you learned years ago take a refresher course. Know your limits. Remember when your parents told you your lips are turning purple and you still did not want to get out of the water? Well, take a break, warm up a little. If you have been active for a long period of time, slow down, remember to apply sunscreen and hydrate

ichard Chevrolet has been family owned and operated in Cheshire for 35 years. Opened in 1975 with only 15 employees and selling about 48 vehicles a month, we now employ over 60 people and are one of the largest dealerships in New England, selling over 1,400 vehicles annually. Our commitment to excellence in customer satisfaction has been recognized twice by General Motors as the number one dealership for customer satisfaction in the entire U.S. In addition, Richard Chevrolet was recently named a Certified Saturn Service Provider, a designation given to a few select dealers with exemplary

customer satisfaction scores. We are proud to offer one of the largest selections of new Chevrolets and pre-owned vehicles in New England, including commercial, and the Finance Department can assist customers with a variety of credit histories. The service department is equipped to repair not only Chevrolets but also a variety of other makes and models with 18 bays, a heavy-duty lift, laser alignment, and two quick lube bays. The service team includes multiple technicians with the rare “World Class” distinction and our service prices are competitive with all major chain shops and other dealerships. entek Farm is a family-owned business and has been in our family for nearly 100 years. Nellie and Paul Zentek, who came from Poland, bought the property in 1914. They originally raised dairy cows on the land and gradually progressed to vegetables. In 1972, their grandson and my husband, Paul W. Zentek, decided to build greenhouses to raise bedding plants. Today the Zentek Farms cows are gone, but the vegetables 325 Higgins Road and flowers have become our liveCheshire, CT lihood. (203) 272-0444 For the past 23 years, we have been providing the community with fresh sweet corn, vine-ripened tomatoes, tender green beans, succulent melons, and a wide selection of great tasting fruits and vegetables. Our younger son, Benjamin Paul, and two nephews, Nathan Paul and Joshua Michael, continue to help on the farm. We would say they work harder than the majority of 17-year-olds in Cheshire. We are proud of their work ethic and pleased they have an interest in the farm. We offer annual flats, potted flowers, hanging baskets, perennials, herbs, vegetable plants, and potting soil. We strive to offer high-quality plants at reasonable prices because we want your shopping experience with us to be a good one. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our customers for their patronage over the years and invite new customers to come on down to visit us at Zentek Farm Market, where the corn is fresh, the plants are healthy, and the atmosphere is friendly. We are open daily, May through October, and are located in south Cheshire at 325 Higgins Rd., off Route 10.

hen brothers James and John began Sullivan Brothers Remodeling in 1987, they knew how much they both loved to work with their hands. Carpentry was a good fit for them. As the business began to grow in the early 1990s, they quickly realized that many homeowners were looking for a company that would take care of the entire project and not just one small phase. They were young and began to expand their skills in many other areas of remodeling and restoration. From carpentry to

plumbing to electrical, cabinetry and whatever was required to complete a beautiful restoration project, the brothers either learned how to do it or hired someone who did. Their first job came from a $5 ad in The Cheshire Herald in 1987 and they have not missed a day of work since. They hired their first employee in 1989 and each of the 22 people that have joined them since that time has brought different talents to the business. Sullivan Brothers has developed into a full-service remodeling company, completing ad-

You can help fight cancer, and honor loved ones who have had cancer, by joining the luminaria ceremony at the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life events. During the luminaria ceremony, candles are placed in bags in honor and memory of people who have had cancer. When lit, hundreds of luminaria (candle lanterns) brighten the way for Relay For Life walkers throughout the night. Companies enter the market at a low price point, but sus-

Our staff has an average of six years or more with the company and 30 years or more of installation experience. Our knowledge of products is second to none. We even have other stone companies calling us to ask our advice on projects. We are your one-stop source

I

(Erica) am the “E” part of the business and my husband, Hugh Sullivan, is the “H.” Together, we started Hand E Services LLC — his

dream and passion (after our family, of course). Hugh and I have been together for 22 years. After college, we lived in Fairfield

County where Hugh became a salesman, commuting to NYC everyday from sun up to sun down. After years of doing the corporate gig and feeling unfulfilled, he decided to change careers and start over in the construction industry doing what he loves. He started in the carpenters union, running his own business. Then, a great opportunity came along working as a superintendent for a top construction company. Then, the bottom fell out. We were vacationing in Ver-

mont where my girlfriend and I decided to go on a snowmobile ride. Ten minutes in, she lost control of the sled and our lives changed forever. She was unharmed, but the sled flipped over and landed on me. The ambulance found me in the middle of the road with Hugh at my side. After a 12-hour surgery to rebuild my left shoulder and three weeks in the hospital, Hugh entered my room looking broken and announced his company had let him go, with no package. Hugh has always taken care of his family. No one was going to stop him from doing what he loves. So, after years of being in the construction industry, he is starting Hand E Services LLC. Our business model is to offer dependable top quality services. We would love to supply you with a free quote. Just give us a call — we do it all. See our advertisement on page 17.
