Choose The Right Hardwood Floor For You
With so many available options for hardwood flooring, today’s environmentally responsible consumer wants accurate information to simplify the process of selecting a new hardwood floor. “Be a knowledgeable consumer,” says the american hardwood Information Center, www.HardwoodInfo.com, “and get the facts about U.S. hardwoods. They’re ‘green,’ exceptionally beautiful and can last a lifetime.” Shop with confidence! These hardwood facts will guide you in making the
right hardwood flooring choice. * A solid hardwood floor will provide decades of extraordinary beauty, durable service, and flexibility. It may initially cost a little more, but remember that solid hardwood flooring can be refinished for excessive wear or changing tastes. * Hardwood floors are non-toxic and trap no allergens. Simple maintenance -- dust mopping, sweeping, or vacuuming -- will keep them looking great and allergen-free. * U.S. hardwoods are truly
sustainable. A recent U.S. Forest Service report verified that the volume of hardwood timberland in american forests is almost double that of 50 years ago. * U.S. hardwoods are an allnatural, carbon-negative material. they have no emissions for methane, nitrogen oxides, or other particulate matter and they’re homegrown, further minimizing their carbon footprint. * When considering a particular hardwood, pay attention to its hardness rating. Consider qak, maple, cherry, and ash for high

Trees And Shrubbery Can Save On Energy Costs A
few improvements can be concentrated outdoors this season. While homeowners are cleaning up the property or inspecting their home’s exterior, they may want to consider adding some trees and shrubbery that can save them money down the line. Most individuals are tightening their belts and watching spending these days. High numbers of layoffs and increasing unemployment numbers are indicative of troubled times. But while income has decreased, the cost of living certainly has not. Energy costs still remain high, and many homeowners are looking for ways to cut spending any way they can around the home. There is something relatively
easy homeowners can do to reduce the financial burden of energy costs --get planting. Choosing the right types of trees and shrubs can offset heating and cooling costs all year long. Just think how a towering shade tree dramatically cools an area when the sun is high in the sky and can be a welcome solace on a hot day. A hedge of thick evergreen bushes may serve as a windblock when the weather is blustery. Incorporating these elements into a landscape can be a natural and inexpensive way to cut costs. Before planting, homeowners should first answer a few questions. * What direction does my house face?
Join Cheshire Academy For Buddy Walk A
Buddy Walk for the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) will be held at Cheshire Academy on Sunday, Oct. 11. It is a great family event with many different walking distances for all ages. The goal is to raise $30,000 and NDSS hopes to include your organization on their sponsorship roster this year. The event will also feature raffles, free food, and activities, as well as a visit by wellknown Down syndrome actor Chris Burke from ABC’s
“Life Goes On” and CBS’s “Touched by an Angel.” Over 350 people are expected to attend the walk. For sponsorship information, contact Laura Torrey at (203) 699-8952 or at lauratorrey@att.net. NDSS was established in 1979 to increase public awareness about Down Syndrome and assist families in addressing the needs of people with this genetic condition, and to sponsor and encourage scientific research.

* What areas of the house have the most windows? * What climate do I live in? Are four seasons experienced? * What is my planting “zone”? * Are there any rules and regulations regarding planting shrubbery or trees around my home? Answering these questions can help homeowners decide on what plants will be right for their home
needs. For example, individuals who live in primarily hot climates should understand that nearly 75 percent of all solar heat gain in a building comes through windows. Therefore, shading the south- and west-facing windows of the home with trees can dramatically reduce reliance on cooling systems. Keeping an air conditioner unit
shaded can also improve its efficiency. Homeowners who experience the highs and lows of all seasons will want to consider deciduous trees. These are trees that lose their leaves in cold weather. Deciduous trees will block the sun during the summer, but then let the light in winter warm up the interior. If a home is routinely under attack by blustery winds, thick shrubs planted for windbreaking are ideal. These include firs, junipers, and other evergreens. They should be planted perpendicular to the winds for maximum blockage. Shrubs planted on the northeast side of the home may protect the home from storms that tend to roll in from this direction. Do not plant evergreens where sunlight is desired, otherwise the thermostat may need to be turned up to compensate.

A special ‘Boulder Knoll Sunflower’ daffodil mix will be available as well. ‘Garden Angels’ can purchase bulbs that will be planted en masse this October at Boulder Knoll Community Farm. All profits from the bulb sales will also be donated to the Friends of Boulder Knoll.
Tours of the Boulder Knoll Community Farm and gardens will be conducted on Saturday by shareholders of the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) group at Boulder Knoll. The farm
is environmentally- sustainable and pesticide-free, and has provided healthy, local produce and herbs to 35 CSA shareholders this summer in its first year of operation. A portion of the crop was
also donated weekly to neighborhood food banks. Information about the educational programs that have been conducted this year will be available. The CSA will double in size next year, and questions about what a CSA is, the benefits, costs, and responsibilities of shareholders will be answered at the event. A Community Potluck Luncheon will be held on Saturday as well, from noon to 2 p.m. in the CSA shed at Boulder Knoll Community Farm. All are welcome to celebrate the community with a shared meal. If you wish to participate, bring a recipe and something to eat made with CSA or local produce. For information, contact Greg Melville at (203) 439-7003 or gwmelville@earthlink.net.

Fast, Easy and Inexpensive Ways to Improve a Home A
s the economy continued to struggle over the last year, many homeowners put off home improvement projects as a means of saving money and insulating themselves from any potential financial pitfalls. While the economy has yet to fully recover, the speculation that the coming year will be much better than 2009 has led some homeowners to begin seeking smaller home improvement projects. though it might be too early to commit big dollars to a project, there are several options out there for homeowners looking to make small and inexpensive additions or improvements. * consider any new guests. an unfortunate side effect of the bad
economy is that many people have lost significant amounts of money in investments, be it sinking real estate values or poor performance from investments in the market. this has forced many seniors to move back in with their families, either because of retirement plans that have been postponed or because of the high cost of senior living facilities that families can no longer afford. For families with a new senior house guest, chances are the home needs to be equipped with several things to make it more senior-friendly. For as little as $100 apiece, projects such as installing easygrip door handles, grab bars in the tub or near the toilet, and even

easier to use faucets that are more amenable to people with arthritis can be completed on a weekend afternoon. * Make aesthetic improvements. structural improvements are often the most expensive and require the largest time commitment. however, projects that are purely aesthetic aren’t terribly expensive and can be completed in a much shorter period of time. One easy project that can give the home a new feel is to work on the entryway of the home. Painting the front door can create an entirely different look and first impression by visitors, and it’s a very easy and inexpensive project to undertake. another low-cost aesthetic improvement is to power wash a home that has vinyl siding. siding often collects mold, mildew and grime that requires the use of a power washer to remove. One can be rented rather inexpensively and a thorough power washing can be completed as a weekend project. Painting the interior of the home can also add new life to a room that a homeowner has oth-
erwise grown accustomed to or a room in which the paint has begun to dull or even chip. Because paint is relatively inexpensive, this is a great way to make major changes to a home without a major impact on the pocketbook. * clean up. cleaning a home is not only inexpensive to improve its feel and look, but it should also be free unless the occupants are genuine pack rats. For homeowners who have lived in the same home a long time, clutter has probably crept its way into the home and taken over certain areas. clearing out this clutter
can create whole new areas of the home, and unless the local sanitation department needs to be called to tote it all away, clearing out the clutter costs nothing except some time and effort on the weekend.

Consider Budget-Friendly Options For Remodeling F
amilies know how important it is to retain the value of their homes, especially when we hear so much about diminishing home values and foreclosures. still, remodeling is one of the best ways to preserve your home’s value and in some parts of the country, homeowners can still recover up to 90 percent of their remodeling costs despite falling home prices. if you’re a homeowner who’s in the process of remodeling, consider budget-friendly options to get the look you want without breaking the bank. here are several tips to give you some less expensive options when remodeling. Kitchen the countertops are one of the high impact surfaces in your kitchen. While natural stone options like granite and quartz, as well as solid surfaces are alluring, they’re expensive and can quickly drain your remodeling budget. Now is a good time to check out a contemporary laminate countertop, which offers luxury looks at a surprisingly low cost when compared to stone. Wilsonart(r) hd High Definition Laminate, for example, is available in 43 designs created specifically for heavy use horizontal surfaces like countertops. the deep, rich look and dimensional texture can give your kitchen countertop the look you want without the sacrifice. Custom cabinets, though gorgeous to look at, can also make a significant dent in your budget plan. to get the same look for less, install oversized crown molding on top of stock cabinets to make them “pop.” Most people won’t notice the difference, and you’ll save enough to buy a new appliance or two. Bathroom a beautiful, updated bathroom will undoubtedly add value to your home, but it can also be a money pit that sucks away your remodeling dollars due to potentially high material and labor costs. in an effort to cut back, try
searching for discounted fixtures like shower heads and faucets at home improvement stores or at online sources like eBay. Oftentimes, the cost of new luxury-name fixtures can run between $500 to $1000 while mass-market versions may provide the same look for less. Many manufacturers, like Moen and delta, provide detailed installation instructions so you can save there, too. those popular glass or
decorative nickel knobs and pulls on cabinets and doors can often run as much as $20 apiece. a better option is oversized hardware -- eight to 12 inches long as opposed to the standard four to five inches -- which gives you a bold look for less. You can also save money on bathroom countertop surfaces by considering durable laminate instead of stone, which can be stained by cosmetics and
cleaners. another advantage of laminate is that if you decide to change the color scheme of your bathroom in a few years, laminate can be switched out easily and inexpensively. Family Room estimates tell us that adding a family room, as opposed to simply remodeling one, will help a homeowner recoup as much as 80 percent of their original investment at resale. remember to plan the space by factoring in the size of your family, the ages of your kids (and their friends), and perhaps even the possibility of additions to your immediate family, like grandparents or babies. some families go as far as taking out walls to improve space, but careful planning and wise furniture positioning can help you avoid drastic changes to the room
that tend to drain your budget. if you’re handy or can afford to hire a carpenter, built-in shelving and possibly an entertainment/gaming nook are useful and popular additions, and can be painted, stained, or simply covered with laminate to match your decor. Bedrooms From a purely practical standpoint, your bedrooms are places for you and your family to sleep and take refuge from the outside world. a master bedroom remodel should reflect an atmosphere of serenity and comfort. it’s also the perfect place to install energy efficient windows, which will help keep you cool in the summer, warm in the winter, and allow you to eventually recoup the cost with savings on your monthly energy See COLOR, page 16

Carving Out Some Fall Memories Gary Kosienski got some help from 9-year old Brendan Acton, as the two got things rolling at the Cheshire Fall Festival and Marketplace by carving out a large ‘C’ for Cheshire out of a block of ice. Make Your Home Eco-Friendly A
ccording to the United states Green Building council, eco-friendly buildings not only make a positive impact on the environment, but on the pocketbook as well. Making environmentally friendly adjustments such as improving insulation, installing low-flow water fixtures and toilets, and using longer lasting light bulbs in existing buildings or new buildings can make a major impact on a company’s bottom line. such adjustments, the Green Building council says, can reduce water usage by 40 percent, lower energy usage and carbon dioxide emissions by more than one-third, and add $180 billion annually in increased worker productivity. in addition, waste that results from construction and demolition is reduced by 50 to 75 percent when building with eco-friendly products.

New Windows Can Open Up Big Savings If
you’re among the many homeowners thinking of replacing your home’s windows to take advantage of the $1,500 federal tax credits for energy efficient upgrades, you may be wondering where to start. Understanding which windows and patio doors may be best for your home can be difficult given the wide range of products -- from inexpensive vinyl windows with limited options to wood and aluminum-clad wood with countless upgrades. There are many avenues for learning about windows and doors, and for purchasing your windows. The Internet The Internet is helpful for researching windows and doors and manufacturers, and gaining an understanding of window and door construction and terminology.
“The Internet can help homeowners learn about window and door manufacturers and their products, and to develop a short list of preferred manufacturers,” said Chris Schield of Weather Shield Windows & Doors, which provides an overview of the basics on windows and doors at www.weathershield.com. “Homeowners should then get a first-hand account of a product’s performance, actual price and features from a reputable window and door dealer, installed sales company, or a building or remodeling contractor.” Manufacturers’ Web sites can also help you search for the closest dealer. By searching Weather Shield’s dealer locator, for example, you can identify nearby lumberyards, window and door dealers, and installed sales com-
panies or replacement contractors that sell that brand. Which dealer you choose will depend on how much information you may need, the complexity of the project, and if you plan to install the windows yourself. Get Rid Of Bathroom Mold And Mildew Forever W
ant to give your bathroom a new look without dishing out loads of cash? While you’re deciding on your decor and selecting a paint color, why not think about preventing one of the most common bathroom problems -- mold and mildew growth. cleaning can remove mold and mildew, but the trick to controlling it is to prevent it before it starts. Follow these steps from the mold and mildew prevention experts at Zinsser:
* Keep airflow constant. The combination of hot showers in small spaces creates an ideal environment for the growth of mold and mildew. consider installing an exhaust fan or ceiling fan to improve ventilation in your bathroom. They can increase airflow and significantly slow the growth of mold and mildew. What if installing a fan isn’t in your budget? leaving your bathroom window slightly open when you shower can also help airflow.
* eliminate moisture. stagnant water produces moisture in the air and creates an ideal environment for the growth of mold and mildew. limit excessive moisture by using a dehumidifier and by wiping down shower walls after each use. * clean infected areas. treat bathroom surfaces with JOMaX(r) Mold Killer and deodorizer. it’s a ready-to-use cleaner and deodorizer that kills mold, while

Feng Shui Elements Can Transform Any Home
M
any people believe feng shui is simply another design style. actually, it’s more complicated than that. Feng shui is actually an ancient chinese art and science developed more than 3,000 years ago. the science encompasses a complex knowledge that illustrates how to balance the energies of any given space to assure the health and good fortune for people living in that space. in chinese culture, gentle wind and clear waters have long been associated with good health and a good harvest. it should come as no surprise then that feng means “wind” and shui means “water.” the chinese believe that the world is made up of “chi” or energy. depending upon how that energy flows, the outcome could be good or bad, particularly inside of a home. a feng shui expert will use a compass, also known as the “lopan,” and the “Ba-Gua,” to do an analysis of a home. the Ba-Gua is an octagonal grid containing the symbols of the i ching, the ancient oracle on which feng shui is based. While feng shui in its entirety is complicated and best left to a professional, there are certain concepts the average homeowner can embrace and implement in the home. * improve air quality and natural light. Open up the drapes and windows to let the sunshine in, and the air to flow. Introduce plants that will help filter the air, and as a secondary route, use an
air filter to remove impurities in the air. While natural light is best, full-spectrum light bulbs can also enhance the light in a home. * reduce clutter. lightening up the house is key to good feng shui. clutter can trap good energy. Get rid of everything you don’t absolutely need. * Define your home’s Ba-Gua. Use the grid to pinpoint the specific eight areas of the home that will provide an energy map of the space. For example, the southeast feng shui area of your home is connected to the flow of wealth and money energy in your life and is seen as lucky for 2009. the Ba-Gua will also tell you what colors and elements are essential to promoting good feng shui in those specific areas. * Learn about the five feng shui elements. educating yourself about these elements can help you incorporate changes in the home. each element is represented by
specific colors, and using these colors is an easy way to bring about change in the home. WOOd: Green, brown Fire: red, strong yellow, orange, purple, pink earth: light yellow, sandy/ earthy colors, light brown Metal: White, gray Water: Blue, black * learn your feng shui birth element. this element pertains to the year you were born. Using this element in your home can be a good way to reinforce positive energy. * examine door placement. ideally, your front door and back door should not line up with each other. if they do, according to the principles of feng shui, the chi will slip right through the house without bringing benefits to you. if the doors do line up, you can help ease the problem by placing a large plant or other obstacle beside one of the doors, with an
angled throw rug to encourage a path in a sideways direction. * create a joyous space. decorating with more light, music,
water, air, plants, mirrors, windchimes, bright colors, houseplants, and flowers can activate joy and happiness chi in the home.

One Coat Of Paint Is Plenty O
ne of the easiest home improvement projects -- one that will add the most value to your home for the least amount of money -- is painting. It’s easy to keep your paint job looking great so it continues to add value to your home for years to come, just do what professional painters do: use one coat of primer and one coat of paint instead of two coats of paint. Here’s why: * Primers hide previous colors -- even the darkest blues and deepest reds -- far better than paint alone and prevent them from showing through or changing the color of the topcoat. They’ll make your new color look more vibrant and even. Here’s a little secret:
By tinting your primer towards your paint color, you’ll use less paint -- plus get all the benefits of priming. Just ask your paint store or home center associate to add one half the same colorant they use to mix your paint. * Primers work hard to block stains. If you try to cover a stain with a fresh coat of paint, the stain will probably bleed through -- no matter how many coats of paint you apply. Quality primers seal in stains and prevent them from ruining your paint job. * Primers prevent common paint problems. Because primers are formulated to prevent problems like cracking, peeling and blistering, they’ll make any paint-
ed surface more durable, washable -- and last much longer! * Primers provide a sound base for paint. Paint is formulated to provide rich, beautiful color -- but don’t expect it to do a primer’s job. High quality primers are rich in resin and provide a firm base for paint to adhere. Primers like Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3(R) even stick to glossy, hard-to-paint surfaces without sanding, so you can paint paneling, cabinets, glossy paints, vinyl siding and more. For more information on the complete line of Zinsser primers -- or for more helpful home improvement “tips” to make your next painting or home improvement project faster and easier -visit www.zinsser.com.

convenience. Many carry a large variety of millwork and other products, so you can pick up caulking and shims at the same time. Many also can handle installation for you or recommend a contractor to install your windows. Lumberyards/Window and Door Dealer at a lumberyard or window and door dealer, you’ll generally find a more consultative sales approach. the salespeople are well versed in product lines, home construction, remodeling and even building codes, and can help you determine what will work best for your project. larger dealers often have extensive showrooms that give you an up-close look at many different product lines and design options in display walls, which provides context as to how a product looks installed. “Window and door dealers can educate homeowners on the latest product innovations and can also
replacement windows with installation. installed sales companies cut down your research time by coming to you. Before buying from an installed sales company, verify the quality and performance of the windows and doors, and the company’s reputation. “the federal tax credits have helped increase homeowner interest in window replacement, which has also increased the number of unlicensed, fly-by-night companies wanting to capitalize on the opportunity,” schield said. “homeowners should verify references and credentials of any company before signing a contract or writing a check.” schield suggests buying from companies that are members of the Better Business Bureau, have a long history, and employ certified American Architectural Manufacturers association installers. calling past customers for a reference will also help prepare you for the purchase. Home Improvement Retailer home improvement retail stores display a limited selection of window and door brands and styles, and sometimes inventory standard sizes in the mostrequested styles. if you’d like particular options or a specialty shape, the salespeople can place a special order with one of the manufacturers they sell. Keep in mind, if you’re perusing for the brand you saw on the internet, it may not be carried at the store down the street, as these stores PJ_ad_tv_tab.qxd:Layout 1 often carry only a few brands. these stores have the corner on

choosing where to buy your windows and doors is an important decision, but it doesn’t have to be a lengthy undertaking. By researching brands, products, styles, and options online before
visiting a retailer or showroom, you’ll be more comfortable talking with a salesperson and more likely to choose the windows and doors best suited for your home and your lifestyle.

the cheshire herald, OctOBer 1, 2009
ccording to a report from the United states department of labor, the average american consumer spends slightly more than 34 percent of their paycheck on housing. the average U.s. consumer makes $63,091 before taxes, with average annual expenditures of $49,638. that translates to nearly $17,000 per year spent on housing. this includes utilities, fuels and public services (which combine for 7 percent of expenditures for housing), shelter (20.2 percent), household operations (2 percent), housekeeping supplies (1.3 percent), and household furnishings and equipment (3.6 percent). What might come as most surprising, particularly to homeowners, is their annual expenditures on transportation. transportation expenditures account for more than half of what the average american spends on housing. homeowners looking to save money and improve their home, therefore, should consider the possibility of spending less on transportation, the costs of which include gasoline. Interestingly enough, spendings on transportation significantly outweigh what’s spent on food. again, however, homeowners hoping to save for their next big home improvement project might want to consider eating in more, as the average U.s. consumer spends nearly $2,700 per year on food purchased away from home.
