hristmas trees are a holiday tradition. Lately, so is the debate over real or man-made trees. Each side has its supporters and detractors, and both real and man-made Christmas trees have their pros and cons. When deciding whether or not to go to the nearby tree farm or the department store for your holiday tree, consider the following factors. What will a natural tree cost? Natural trees can vary in price depending on where you go. Prices can range from less than $20 to more than $50. When making the decision, it’s important to keep in mind that a tree does not last very long, and therefore investing too much money might not be the best way to spend your money. However, there are options to purchase real trees with the root ball intact, which enables homeowners to plant the tree in their yard after the season. What will an artificial tree cost? Artificial trees will initially have a higher price tag than their natural counterparts. However, they are also more cost-effective because they can be used for several years. There is also no need to purchase tree stands and watering devices with an artificial tree, which are typically necessary with a natural tree. How easily can a natural tree be moved? The Christmas tree lot or farm does take steps
to make it easier to lift and move the tree, but there’s still the challenge of getting it home. Many, whether driving a car or SUV, choose to put the tree on the roof of their vehicle, but then worry about the tree blowing off onto the highway. Then’s there the issue of getting the tree through the doorway, an especially difficult task for homeowners with older homes where doorways are often much smaller compared to newer homes. Bringing the tree into the home can also leave trails of pine needles from the car to house. That’s a problem that can still be around throughout the year, as those pesky pine needles can be difficult to banish. Disposal bags make the task of removing trees a lot neater, as long as the homeowner remembers to put one under the tree when it’s placed in the room for decorating. How easily can an artificial tree be moved? Clearly, artificial trees have the advantage when it comes to moving them. They’re often boxed, and are lightweight and easy to maneuver into the house. What does a natural tree look like? Natural tree supporters feel a real tree is much more aesthetically appealing. Additionally, a live tree can fill the room it’s in with a lovely scent of pine. However, those buying late might be stuck with all that’s left of the inSee TREE, page 18

Holiday Guide 2009 Give To Those Less Fortunate By Volunteering
W
hat better way to celebrate the season of giving than by volunteering in your community? Today, when so many families are struggling to make ends meet, there is no shortage of opportunities to help others. Deciding where to volunteer can be as simple as contacting one of the many charitable organizations or social services agencies in your community. Senior centers and hospitals are often looking for volunteers or can direct you to groups that may be in need of your support during the holidays. Many churches and religious institutions are affiliated with or operate programs to help people in need and welcome volunteers, regardless of
their religious beliefs. There are also many organizations that match potential volunteers with charitable groups. VolunteerMatch (www.volunteermatch. org), is a national service that connects volunteers with organizations and programs that need help. The Holiday Project (www. holiday-project. org), another nationwide organization, arranges for volunteers to visit people confined to nursing homes, hospitals and other institutions during the holiday season. An Internet search (“holiday volunteering,” for example) can yield countless opportunities to serve, from local homeless shelters to international
programs that operate yearround. If schools and service clubs in your area hold holiday food and clothing drives, they may need help soliciting, collecting and distributing donations. Animal lovers can bring great comfort to neglected pets. Contact your local animal shelter or visit the ASPCA Web site at www.aspca.org for information about volunteer opportunities. Volunteering as a family teaches children the importance and rewards of contributing to their community and helps to encourage a new generation of philanthropists. Many families share in a holiday ritual of volunteering together to serve meals at homeless shelters or meal centers. VolunteerMatch also offers information about volunteering as a family.
Locally, the Cheshire Youth and Social Services Department can direct prospective volunteers to area organizations that would welcome their help. Call (203) 271-6690. Those in need of assistance can also contact DYSS for infomation and applications for the following programs: The Connecticut Energy Assistance Program provides assistance to income eligible households in paying for their heating costs during the winter months. DYSS is an intake site for Cheshire residents, gathering information so that New Opportunities for Waterbury can certify residents eligible for assistance based on the income of the household. Cheshire Fuel Bank provides assistance to Cheshire residents who do not meet the financial or asset criteria of the Connecticut Energy Assistance, but who are in an emergency situation. Funds for this program are provided by donations from individuals, religious groups, and civic organizations. Due to the significant increase in the cost of home heating oil, the grant award has been increased to up to $250 See PROGRAMS, page 13

One or two winning recipes are all it takes to keep your guests raving for weeks to come—and you don’t have to be a world-class chef. Combine store-bought items—such as ready-made dips and sauces, refrigerated biscuit and pizza dough, and frozen puff pastry shells—with fresh ingredients to create a your own original culinary masterpieces. The following recipe from A.J. Rathbun’s Party Snacks! is a delicious appetizer that’s also easy to prepare.

Cut the onions in half from the stem end through the root end. Cut each half into 1/4-inch-thick slices. 2. Put the oil and butter in a large skillet over mediumhigh heat, swirling to combine. Once the butter has bubbled, add the brown sugar. Stir for 1–2 minutes, or until sugar has melted. 3. Add the onions to skillet and stir well to coat. Saute for 5 minutes, stirring regularly. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook onions for 30–35 minutes more, stirring occasionally to keep them from sticking, until they’re golden brown. 4. Stir together cream cheese, sour cream, pepper, and salt in a large bowl. Add cooled onions and stir until well combined. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. 5. Preheat oven to 400° F. Thaw puff pastry shells according to package directions. 6. Place shells on a baking sheet and bake for 20–25 minutes—they should puff up. Fill shells with onion mixture and bake for 5–10 minutes, checking to make sure the filling is warmed through before serving.

Holiday Guide 2009 Festive Favorites Add Pizzazz To Party Menus Champagne Punch (serves 10)
Simple Syrup (makes 4-1/2 cups)
6 ounces freshly squeezed orange juice 4 ounce simple syrup (see recipe at right) 2 ounces freshly squeezed lime juice 2 ounces freshly squeezed lemon juice 6 ounces white rum 6 ounces dark rum 1 25-fl. oz. bottle of champagne Orange, lime and lemon slice for garnish Ice (in block form of possible, or large chunks)
Chocolate Truffles (makes about 1-1/2 pounds) 14 oz. dark chocolate (preferably 70 percent cacao), or high-quality unsweetened baking chocolate 1 cup heavy cream 8.oz. additional dark chocolate, for melting 1-1/2 cups unsweetened cocoa powder
2-1/2 cups water 3 cups sugar
1. Add ice to a large punch bowl. If using chunks, fill the bowl just under halfway. 2. Add the orange juice, simple syrup, lime juice, and lemon juice. With a large spoon or ladle, stir 10 times. 3. Add the light and dark rums. Stir 10 more times. 4. Add the champagne, but not too quickly. Add orange, lime and lemon slices. Stir only once to preserve bubbles. 5. Ladle into punch glasses or festive goblets. Garnish each serving with a slice of fruit.
1. Bring the heavy cream to a boil in a saucepan. Break up the 14 ounces of dark chocolate in a heatproof bowl. 2. Add the hot cream to the chocolate, stirring until all the chocolate is melted and forms a creamy ganache. Place the ganache into the refrigerator until it is able to hold a shape. 3. Using two spoons (or your fingers if you don’t mind getting messy), scoop and roll small balls of the ganache into round balls. Place the ganache balls onto waxed or parchment paper. 4. In the top of a double boiler, melt the remaining chocolate. Place the cocoa powder in a bowl or plate for dredging. 5. Dip each ganache ball into the melted chocolate. Then roll in the cocoa powder until coated. 6. Let the truffles dry and harden slightly before serving.
1. Add the water and sugar to a medium-size saucepan. Stirring occasionally, bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat. Lower the heat a bit, keeping the mixture at a low boil for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. 2. Turn off the heat, and let the syrup cool completely in the pan. Store in a clean, airtight container in the refrigerator.

Holiday Guide 2009 Make Donations Count In A Tough Economy
T
his year, many families have been forced to cut back on some of their favorite things. One such area they may unfortunately be forced to reassess is their charitable donations. With the holiday season upon us, many families are realizing they might not be able to donate as much this year, which only highlights the importance of making a donation as meaningful as possible. These tips may help. •Ask for documentation. Because many can only afford to make one charitable donation this year, it’s important when choosing a charity to ask for documentation that specifies just where your money
will go. If no documentation can be provided, inquire as to how the money is used and what percentage goes to the cause of the charity and how much goes toward the charity’s operating costs. •Ask if the holiday season is the best time to donate. Many charities receive an overwhelming percentage of their donations during the holiday season. That said, some actually prefer donations outside of the holiday season. Ask the charity if they’d prefer a donation at a different time of year. This can provide donors a little financial relief during the expensive holiday season and also be a boost to a charity during its offseason.
•Decide on a number and stick to it. This can be hard for those who find it hard to turn down a needy charity. However, families facing financial troubles or cutting back should decide on a set amount to donate and, once that has been done, kindly refuse other charities asking for donations. •Be familiar with the charity. Families who can only afford to make one charitable donation this season should consider donating to a charity with which they’re familiar. While many charities are worthy of a donation, one that a family is already familiar with will make them feel better about their donation and where it’s going.
All legitimate charities are worthy of a donation, and nearly all are also in need. The following is a list of well-known charities and their contact information.

Holiday Guide 2009 Popular Musicals Slated For The Palace Stage

t’s time to let your hair down and dance the night away! Hairspray, Broadway’s musical comedy phenomenon that inspired a major motion picture is coming back to the Palace Theater in Waterbury for one night only, Thursday, Jan. 7, at 7:30 p.m. The Palace’s presentation of this fantastically fun musical and winner of eight 2003 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, is sponsored by Naugatuck Savings Bank and media partner WTNH/MyTV9.
Hairspray transports audiences back to 1962, when the ’50s were out and change was in the air. Baltimore’s Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, has only one passion: to dance. Before the performance, the Palace is offering patrons a 5:30 p.m. pre-show dinner in the Poli Club on the theater’s mezzanine level. Dinner is $40 per member or $50 per non-member (includes tax, gratuity, coffee, tea) and is limited to 30 people. Cash bar is also avail-

Holiday Guide 2009 Money-Saving Tips For Memorable Holidays
T
he holidays are a time for family and friends to gather and share the joys of the season. Many families are faced with the need to scale back their holiday celebrations and expectations, but memorable holidays can be both frugal and festive with a little extra planning and reclaiming some of the traditions of simpler times. Make your holiday season both merry and memorable with the following money-saving tips: •Make a plan. Create a plan for holiday spending and gift giving. List possible gifts, how
much you expect to pay, what you can afford to pay, and alternatives. Determine how much you can afford to spend on each gift and stick to your plan. Always look for sales, pay in cash or with debit cards whenever possible, compare prices online, and check shipping charges. For kids, consider buying one nice gift rather than a lot of smaller ones. •Timing is everything. While the best deals on greeting cards can be found after the holidays, some do go on sale in December. It’s also worth remembering that post-
cards are less expensive and also cost less to mail. If you’re handy with scissors, transform last year’s greeting cards into this year’s holiday postcards. In addition, it pays to mail packages early. The longer you wait, the more it will cost to make sure that your gifts arrive on time. •It’s a wrap. Wrapping paper, like most other seasonal items, is deeply discounted after the holidays. If you didn’t catch last year’s after-Christmas sales, consider using the comics from your local newspaper as wrapping paper.

White butcher paper and paper bags can be transformed into gift wrap, and last year’s holiday cards can be cut into gift tags. •Nurture nature. Homemade decorations and ornaments add an old-fashioned touch to the holiday season. You can bring nature indoors with cornstalks, pinecones, dried flowers and pumpkins. Trees can be decked with strings of popcorn and cranberries as well as holiday cookie cutters, ribbons and bows. If you’re willing to wait, bargains on Christmas trees can be found in the days leading up to December 25th. You might also consider investing in a high-quality artificial tree, which can save you big bucks in the long run. •Delicious deals. Some grocery stores offer great deals during the holidays. Check
newspapers and store fliers for deals on items you need. Use store brands when making casseroles and side dishes. In the spirit of sharing, a potluckstyle holiday dinner could be a tradition worth considering. It also relieves the host of the entire burden of paying for and preparing the meal. Visit www. GrocerySavingTips.com for additional coupons and hundreds of money-saving suggestions. •Simple pleasures. Holiday entertainment can be as simple as a drive around town to see the lights. And don’t forget to bring along some blankets and hot chocolate for the ride. Pull out the board games you haven’t played in years. Learn three new card games and two new holiday songs. Bake and decorate cookies. Make lasting memories.

Tax Relief For Elderly And Handicapped Renters provides a state subsidy to renters over age 65 or who are receiving Social Security Disability that meet guidelines based on their income and rent/utility expenses. The Cheshire Food Voucher Program provides food vouchers of $30 at local grocery stores to resident households in need of perishable food items. Households are also referred to the local food pantry for non-perishable items that are collected at the annual food drive and monthly by local religious groups. Holiday Guide 2009 Some Fun Facts About The Shortest Day Of The Year
T
hanks in large part to all the holiday hullabaloo, it’s easy to overlook the official arrival of winter. This year, winter begins on December 21. While you might know the winter soltstice brings cold weather, the following can teach you more
about the arrival of the year’s coldest season. What is winter solstice? Winter solstice is when the hemisphere is leaning farthest away from the sun. That’s why daylight is the shortest this day.

good luck to each home.
What causes seasons? They are caused by the rotation of the earth. Earth is tilted away from the sun during the northern hemisphere’s winter, which is why the days are shorter.
What ancient ruin was built to honor the solstice? Newgrange in eastern Ireland was built to honor the solstice. It is one acre and has a 60 foot entranceway. It dates back to 3,300 BCE, making it one of the oldest structures in the world.
What was the Roman festival of Saturnalia? A festival that honored winter solstice where servants ate with their masters. Schools were closed, prisoners were not executed, and people paraded around the streets with black faces or masks.
What custom involves giving presents? Romans gave their children earthenware (sigillaria), rings and seals to celebrate Sigillaria.
What tradition came from the Scandinavians’ winter solstice festival of Jiuleis? The burning of the Yule log. Norse men would burn the log to repel dark and cold. The wood was thought to bring
When it’s winter solstice in the northern hemisphere, what is happening in the southern hemisphere? They are celebrating the summer solstice. At that time,

What does the word “solstice” mean? It comes from two Latin words -- “sol,” which means sun, and “sistere,” which means to cause to stand still. How did the ancient Greeks observe the winter solstice? Their winter solstice ritual was called Lenaea, the Festival of the Wild Women. A man representing the harvest God Dionysos was torn to pieces and eaten by a gang of women. Then, Dionysos was reborn as a baby. By classical times, the human sacrifice was replaced by the killing of a goat and the women became funeral mourners and watchers of the birth. The winter solstice in 1999 was unique. Why? That year the solstice, full moon and lunar perigee happened on the same date. (Perigee means that the moon’s orbit is closest to earth). Here, the moon was full and at its maximum size. The last time that something like this happened was 1866.

Holiday Guide 2009 Ideas To Please The Seniors On Your Gift List
Gift Baskets Holiday gift baskets are
filled with goodies that nearly everyone loves. Cookies, coffees, fruits, and even reusable items such as holiday candles are often good choices to put in gift baskets. Just make sure when giving a gift basket to include food grandma and grandpa can eat. For instance, many seniors have been told to give up caffeinated coffee, so include flavored decaffeinated coffee instead. In addition, pack the basket with low-fat, heart-healthy cookies, since many seniors are on lowfat diets. A Night Out on the Town Many seniors live on fixed incomes, which greatly reduces the amount of money they have available for nights out. That can make a night out on the town especially meaningful. Include dinner at a favorite restaurant and theater

Gift Certificates While some might think a gift certificate is a little detached, that doesn’t have to be the case. In fact, giving a senior a gift card to the local movie theater and promising to go along is essentially giving them an afternoon or evening of your time. When giving a gift card to a nearby supermarket, clothing store, or other retailer, make a day of
it and go shopping with that special senior citizen in your life. Reading, too, is often a favorite hobby of the elderly, so a gift certificate to a nearby bookstore could also be a perfect fit. A Vacation In many instances, grandma and grandpa live far away from their children and grandchildren, particularly these days, when families are spread out more than ever. Paying grandma and grandpa’s travel expenses so they can come visit the family could be the best gift they’ve ever received, and it will give parents and their children a chance to spend more time with the family.

tickets, and include yourself in the night’s festivities, if you haven’t been able to spend much time with Mom and Dad lately. For seniors, a special night out on the town is likely to be far more memorable than you might think.

T
he holiday shopping season has returned, and legions of holiday shoppers are filling the nation’s malls in the hunt for that perfect gift. When it comes to holiday shopping, many friends and family members are a breeze. Is there an ardent sports fan in the family? Tickets to a ballgame will likely be a homerun! Need to find something for the family film buff? A few of his or her favorites on DVD should suffice! But as easy as some people are to shop for, there’s always a person or two for whom it is nearly impossible to find something. One group that
many people find particularly difficult to shop for is the elderly. Unlike kids who would enjoy the newest video game or a gadget-crazy adult who just wants the latest must-have appliance, senior citizens are often more difficult to shop for. That might be due, in part, to seniors living on fixed incomes or seniors who might no longer be physically capable of participating in their favorite activities. However, there are gift ideas that can still strike a chord with grandma or grandpa and ensure their holiday is just as enjoyable as everyone’s.

ou have most certainly seen these birds. They are hard to miss since much of the time they travel down the tree head first. In their travels they forage or store food in the cracks and crevasses of the trees. I am, of course, referring to the Nuthatches, most particularly the White-breasted and Red-breasted Nuthatches. (Sitta carolinensis and Sitta
canadensis, respectively). I am watching one as I write this. My old dogwood just outside my computer room window is a wonderful place to birdwatch and they don’t even know I am there. In this family there are five species, two genera. Of these, only the White and Redbreasted Nuthatches and the Brown Creepers are found in our area. The nuthatches have gray backs, short tails and a long pointed beak. The Whitebreasted bird is the larger

of the two measuring about 5-3/4 inches with a wingspan of about 11 inches. The Redbreasted nuthatch is about 4-1/2 inches with a wingspan of about 8-1/2 inches. At a quick glance they may seem alike, though the Red-breasted bird has a rust colored stomach and a black mask. The White-breasted bird is, of course, white over the stomach and face with a black or gray top on his head. He does have a red-brown area under his tail. The Brown Creepers are about the size of his Whitebreasted cousin, but with a shorter wingspan, (7-3/4 inches) and a longer tail. He has a coloration similar to a sparrow but with a white breast and a long, sharp beak curved downward. The other two cousins

are the Pygmy Nuthatch and the Brown-headed Nuthatch and neither one are found in our area. Brown Creepers are rarely seen because their coloration blends so well with the trees that one could miss them quite easily. As the name suggests, nuthatches prefer mostly nuts, but include invertebrates and seeds. They forage up the tree and down the tree. Seeds and nuts are cracked by wedging them in a crack of the tree and pounding them with their beaks. In the fall and winter these cracks are used to store their cache of food. For the purpose of “tree trunk walking,” their feet are strong with long toes and long, sharp claws for gripping. Both species of nuthatches are monogamous for one year. Though the same nest may be used from year to year this is rare. Nests are located in cavities of trees and are lined with vegetation, fur, and feathers. Generally breeding is in April or May, though this depends on the area and weather. Since both types of nuthatches are

found throughout most of the United States and lower Canada weather is definitely a factor. The female will lay usually 5–9 oval eggs. The eggs are white with variegated spots of brown, red or gray. After incubation of 11–20 days, the clutch hatches. The young are altricial except for some gray down, but will fledge in about 18–30 days. Both sexes care for the young. Watch your trees for these small birds and keep a lookout for the creepers as well. All of these are considered our feeder birds. Since winter does not always provide a lot of nuts, the seeds we supply are welcomed by many birds. It is now fall and you need to get out your feeders. Make sure they are kept clean and dry. Seed that gets soggy sprouts and cakes in the feeders. The birds will love your yard if you feed them. They will enjoy your trees with berries as well. A heater in a birdbath is a big attraction. Enjoy all of our winter birds.

Holiday Guide 2009 Gift-Giving Can Be An Opportunity For Kids
H
andmade gifts from children can be creative and inexpensive, and can also show them that giving can be fun. Decorated tin cans, shoeboxes, and oatmeal containers have been the beginnings of countless homemade gifts over the years, becoming precious works of art inspired by a child’s imagination. Kits or gift baskets are fun to make and receive — and the possibilities are endless. For example, a hand-painted terra cotta flowerpot with a few packets of seeds and a pair of garden gloves tucked inside is an inexpensive gift for someone in the family with a
green thumb. A “movie night” kit can include a favorite film, microwave popcorn, and assorted sweets and snacks. Your child can also create colorful passes for admittance to the show. If you can find one, a theater popcorn tub would be the perfect package to hold the items. Another favorite is a coupon redeemable for a service to be performed by the child. It can be as simple as “Good for Two Hours of Weeding” or “Good for One Car Wash” for a parent or other family member. And, of course, there’s no better gift than love: “Free Hugs All Day Long.” Encouraging children to
consider recipients’ interests when creating personalized coupons not only makes for welcome gifts, but can be a great lesson in caring and compassion, and can also be a great opportunity for your child to interact with adults in new settings. For instance, an offer to serve as a parent’s or grandparent’s “Personal Assistant for a Day” can create opportunities for family members to share quality one-onone time. Once your children have produced a treasure trove of future family heirlooms, they can put the final touches on their gifts by creating handcrafted wrapping paper, gift bags, and gift tags. Start with
a roll of white butcher paper and paper bags. Break out the paints, colored paper, beads, ribbons, buttons and bows, and let the creativity flow. Last year’s holiday and greeting cards are perfect for cutting into gift tags and can also be used to create holiday collages on gift bags. Your newspa-
per’s Sunday comics can be used whole as a fun wrapping paper or cut up and used for decorating the gift packages. By encouraging kids to give of themselves through creative and thoughtful holiday gifts for others, they will not only learn the joys of giving, but have a blast in the process.

Holiday Guide 2009 Teacher Gifts Present A Challenge For Parents
T
he tradition of giving gifts to teachers during the holiday season is still going strong. But many parents can be unsure of what kinds of gifts are appropriate and will be most welcomed by their children’s teachers. The key to selecting teachers’ gifts that will truly be appreciated is to stay both general and practical. Many teachers spend hundreds of
their own dollars each year to furnish their classrooms with supplies and instructional aids. Consider giving something that will enable your child’s teacher to choose items for classroom use. Gift cards from popular general merchandise stores, book sellers, art-supply stores, and officesupply retailers are always appreciated and give the teacher a wide array of merchandise
from which to choose. Gift cards also offer a great deal of flexibility: Teachers can spend a portion on supplies for the classroom and use the rest for something personal. If your child’s school has a scrip program, consider giving scrip. The teacher be thrilled with your gift, and it will help earn money for the school. Teachers also love to receive gifts with a homemade touch,

holiday season. What is the environmental impact of a natural tree? Natural trees are actually much more environmentally friendly than they initially appear (except for, perhaps, the pesticides that may be used by the growers). Christmas trees are grown expressly for the holiday season, and large numbers of new trees are planted each year to replenish the stock. And, land used for tree farms is considered desirable “open space.” Also, once the season has ended, many trees are recycled and used as sand and soil erosion barriers. What is the environmental impact of artificial trees? Artificial trees often come with a host of safety warnings. That’s because they are made from a variety of materials, including PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and metals, which can put toxins into the air during production. That is why there are lead warning labels on some artificial trees. Care should be taken when erecting artificial trees in homes with small children or pets, as lead consumption can be toxic. Another thing to consider is that many artificial trees cannot be recycled, so there is no environmentally friendly way of disposing of them when it’s time to replace them.
