CHOP CHIP SHOWS – SUMMER 2017
Another issue of The Chop done. I remember when we first started printing these puppies, each issue a frail, quivering infant, needing it’s hand held every step of the way; but now... have you ever seen a seahorse giving birth? Yet even the mightiest seahorses and their convulsing birthpouches need to rest from time to time, so we’re on summer break. Take the next two months of ChopFree living to enrich yourself in some way. Take up a new hobby (toy car restoration looks fun) or try out a new sport (a little Bo-Taoshi, anyone?). Whatever it is that you do, do it with grace and finesse and the knowledge that there will be more Chops to read once things start getting poopy outside again.

WALLS & BIRDS
Editor’s note:
In the lab time with Walls & Birlds Questions & Answers by Walls & Birds Editor’s note by Maya-Roisin Slater.
There have been a few sobering moments in my thus short life where something has prompted me to stop and think “Am I not a creative thinker?” This first occurred at my inaugural visit to Ficken3000, a self described “pleasuredome” in the heart of Neukölln. An acute fear of other people prevented me from dancing at this particular party, so I found myself sitting and viewing porn on one of the establishment’s many sex positive televisions. I watched in earnest fascination as one person in a latex gimp suit crawled into an inflated cube made of the same material. Another, clad in an identical get-up, placed a vacuum tube to a hole in the room and proceeded to remove all air from this tiny space. Presumably suffocating, gimp number one dramatically struggled to escape, their flailing arms and legs pushing against the shrinking plastic walls. Somebody somewhere is getting off to this I thought to myself as the clip ended. So specific this porn was, so logistically complicated, it inspired in me a real existential crisis. I have never even come close to fantasizing about anything quite so niche. So, does that mean I am not a creative thinker? Was my imagination somehow stunted along the way? The following article inspired a similar moral confrontation. Being that we are a young grassroots publication beholden to no advertisers or editorial board, we like to keep things fresh and fun. One of these fresh and fun ideas was having local experimental pop group Walls & Birds interview themselves as the feature article for our summer issue. What they sent us in response is truly left of center, a hybrid prose poem/science fiction short story/Q&A. I have been trying to edit this submission into reality for hours now and can honestly say I still don’t really understand a word of what they’re trying to say. It’s such an alternative take on what seems like a relatively simple idea I am now paralyzed with angst I really am the in-the-box-thinker I previously feared. And not to get too heady but maybe that’s the kind of thing art is supposed to do. Push you into a corner with its strangeness until you are forced to imagine other realities and confront your natural inclination to the linear. We never set out to be an art magazine but you know what sometimes shit happens. Rip this out and frame it on your wall. Scrutinize it. Look for references. Discuss with friends. Maybe one day you too will be thinking on this astral plane. Maybe they’re just nutters.
Hey M, this is Judy, maybe you don’t remember me since we met three years ago. I just found the tape you gave me when we last met so I listened to it yesterday for the first time and I’m happy to say that I loved it and I hope you are swell and maybe one day I’ll see you again! She placed her hand on my sleeve. The others watched from afar. I saw their picture in the Neu-Britzer Tribune, beneath it said “a group with no alibi.” The fields flew by hedges and ditches ghastly in the train’s light, or at least appeared to do so, for in reality it was the train that moved.
It’s funny how things never turn out the way you have ‘em planned. Isn’t it? When they released the first issue of The Chop Magazine back in late 1997 an agreement was made. It was said in the most unlikely event of a silver wedding in 2017, we would be the ones to do the interview.
Now I’ve always been the kind of person that doesn’t like to trespass but sometimes you just find yourself over the line.
How do you agree on playing & sing to audiences of all ages? Isn’t it strange how people who suffer together often have stronger connections than people who are most content? This and more questions we ask ourselves:
Walls & Birds you’re said to be very political, yet there seems to be little connection to “the real world” in your songs, hows that? The foxgloves. My senses now sharpened to a ten or fifteen times their normal acuity. They have been a lot of women in their early childhood they’re now all “swept away” … like the confident smile of a girl when she licks her ice cream cone. But that’s just how it is sometimes: You go out for a little dance, you return with a little nothing That’s how the ministry must feel, too. Like most people in western lands they tend to hesitate facing the weird complexity in which life in the 21st century presents itself, (continued on page 7)

FEATURED SHOWS July 23rd – Internet Explorer
August 6 – SO36
Local art-rockers Plattenbau will be tearing up Berlin’s coolest new joint. Friendliest bartenders in town and some jangly guitars. What more do you need?
Sheer Mag rocks! This is an attribute that usually sounds like bro-dongs with weird haircuts, but in case of the female-fronted Philadelphia punk rock outfit it’s 100% positive. The band really knows how to translate this classic rock cliche into something different and refreshing so that you lose all your aversion to the outdated genre. Go see a rockin’ show!
July 28th & 29th – Festaal Kreuzberg YO! SISSY is back! Head to the newly blossoming Festaal for Berlin’s premier queer festival and support female identified artists. Tons of cool local and international ladies, drag and more!
Cooking Sometimes you gotta do things differently, and this month is one of those times. I received a recipe from Albertine of Itaca about tuna melt sandwiches. I was very excited about cooking with her and tasting this dish, especially when later on we discovered our mutual love for salade niçoise (she’s also turned that into a sandwich). But I’ve been busy and I’ve been bad at meeting people for dinner so I decided that for once, I would be the one cooking the band’s recipe. I have to admit I’m ridiculously bad at following recipes so I changed some things (see end of article) for better or worse. But maybe it’s best if you just try and follow Albertine’s instructions from A to Z!

“ I used to watch japanese tuna filetting on youtube, a deeply satisfying waste of time. When I heard about tuna melts, I imagined how a tuna melts into the cut of a japanese knife. After a series of affectionate cuts the tuna is small enough to melt on your tongue. Tuna melts, as in the answer to the question: What does a tuna do? Then I had my first tuna melt. Take two slices of toast, each with a slice of cheese, spread canned tuna and some chopped greens on one of them and top it with the other (cheese inside). I roasted it, just as my Australian friend suggested, „with shitloads of butter“ in a pan. I waited with my fingers tapping on my thighs until good parts of the cheese ran out of the sandwich and formed golden brown semicircles outside. I roasted for a very long time, on low heat, in order to have the tuna melt into the cheese as much as possible. Then finally I served it to myself with lamb’s lettuce and red beet in a fresh lemon vinaigrette. I can truly say that this was the best sandwich I’ve ever had. Now I am trying to lose weight and I will not eat tuna melts again.”

August 25-27 alínæ lumr – Storkow Summer is also the time of the year for exploring what lies outside the big city. You thought Storkow, Brandenburg was lame? Wait til’ you see this year’s line up at alínæ lumr festival: great music in a town from the middle ages with lakes all around. Really worth checking it out. You can look up announced bands on our calendar.
Recipe by Itaca Tentative execution by Amande Dagod Good ideas : I mixed the tuna with 2 spoons of creme fraiche, the juice of 1/2 lemon, parsley, pepper and salt as I always find canned tuna way too dry. I used gouda as cheese but I bet it would be delicious with cheddar. As for the greens, I used fresh spinach from my garden and some rucola / lettuce for the salad (with a lemon and balsamic vinaigrette). Bad idea : I used dinkel brotchen instead of toast and I liked the texture but it was hard to get the right cooking temperature so the cheese didn’t melt the way I wanted. I will try next time with ciabatta or baguette as I’m not a big fan of toast. – Itaca released their album “Mi Manchi” in April and are playing at Festsaal Kreuzberg on July 7th with Adriano Celentano Gebäckorchester and with Of Montreal on July 20th. Albertine Sarges is playing solo at Holzmarkt on July 22nd and on August 5 at Jenseits von Millionen. Lo Selbo is playing Holzmarkt on July 22nd. – itacapop.bandcamp.com

of nature at all observing increasing conflicts, politicians, television, the weather and … …our next door neighbours, yes. It might be only tasteful to then turn to more decent or plain harmonies & devices while the structure it seems hasn’t forgotten about the complexity but must find its way through. There seems to be a calm component to nature, where the forest meets the bridge or the bride, who knows?
What, it might be inquired, was the music of this threne, what at last it may be demanded, did the soprano sing? Having released only one five hour tape in early 2007 makes you realize you lose people’s attention as slow as you earn it?

Ich hatte einfach Bock mal wieder was
Ja, something quiet shows this. Being in love & wearing a dress seems almost as natural after a decade of waiting & yearning as it takes just a minute or two to smile at someone & forget everything. Often musicians seem to be mistaken as someone who have something important to say in a language that is used for all kinds of purposes
I had more and more the impression, as time passed, for all the good frequent departures from 2017 had done ‘em, they might just as well have stayed there. The conservatory, the American bar, the oratory, the cellar, the attic, the diary and, I say it with shame, the servant’s bedroom, to the strains as likely or not of a piano & cello.

For a long time this was a source of great wonder to us, for it read: Here’s some who seem on the one hand reluctant to change their state, and on the other impatient to do so. In the eastern background appeared a point, or dot (or lake), the circumference was black. The point was blue, but oh blue! The rest was white. How the effect of perspective was obtained, I don’t know. We meet on a sunday morning. The air is bleak, the trees are there. Walls & Birds perch or stand in the corner of my eye snow begins to fall.

Top of The Chop Youtubes
by Joe Kelly Usually I try to make these articles an impartial, informative and useful series of tip-offs about life in Berlin and the best it has to offer. I may have occasionally gone off-piste. This month I’d like to talk about my favourite thing; YouTube. It’s not the company or the brand that I care about, they’re probably just as evil as everyone else who pretends they want to make the world better but secretly has a Pinky and the Brain vibe going on. The thing I dig is the random stuff people do with it. It’s like a massive library of the people but where you don’t have to read or even get out of bed to access it. The only limitation is when you have to put down that slice of pizza and clean your greasy fingers before you can type in the next search (I say just stick with the pizza and go with the ‘suggestions’ till it’s done). Anyway, everyone knows YouTube is awesome, I don’t need to explain that. So here it goes, I will attempt to do one of the more difficult things I’ve had to do here for The Chop and narrow my favourite YouTubes down to a selection of 5. I like turtles
Mariah
This kid saying, “I like turtles” is where it all started for me. It’s not even that funny anymore, but it was the first time I realized that randomly funny stuff could happen across the planet and YouTube could deliver straight to me. A newscaster could get bird shit in his mouth in the 90’s or something and I could finally get my hands on the footage. Life was never going to be same. Thanks turtle kid.
Another thing that makes YouTube such a special friend is the potential nostalgia trip. You know that thing in a movie where a robot or an alien comes to earth and plugs themselves into some sort of tv and sees all the war and famine and shit and gets all emo about humans destroying themselves so decides to destroy them? Well YouTube is like that but for all the TV shows from your childhood and TV adverts and music videos that you forgot existed. You plug your face in and take a trip. Only thing is in the movie version the robot takes like 30 seconds but with us normals it’s more like half a day (usually a day of an important deadline when you’re supposed to be writing an article or whatever). Mariah Carey singing ‘Anytime You Need A Friend’ (from Mariah Carey Live) instantly took me back to my childhood, simultaneously kicking off a mini midlife crisis where I’m now in love with early 90’s Mariah. I’m cool with it and everything is fine now but it was important and it wouldn’t have gone down the same way without YouTube (and Mariah).
Longboard fail The main purposes of YouTube for me are to laugh at people and learn how to use software. The software videos are usually about ten minutes longer than they need to be and about 10% as useful as you were hoping so we’re gonna leave those off the list. A Portuguese dude getting his speed wobble on and wailing as he veers off into a ditch however, is the real good stuff. Never gonna let you down, definitely gets into my hall of fame. Hope that knee is all healed my friend. Thanks for the mega lols. Clips of Planet Earth This is obviously not one specific video. Just general clips of crazy stuff that happens outdoors. Why go outside on a Sunday afternoon when you can watch the best bits of outside right from your living room/bedroom/toilet? Think that’s a sad thought? Try watching a bird child and his parents’ crew conserving oxygen for ten mins to try and fly over a mountain top just to be swooped on by a gang of gangsta vultures. YouTube is not just about the funnies or the nostalgia trip, it’s also for looking at super weird animals you never
Disclaimer: sometimes I leave the house.
21st Century Fox intro shit flute thing It’s always funny, probably always will be and is very much the type of pointless time wasting comedy shitposting that only became possible in the last ten years. Sometimes I watch it just before bed
S H OW - R O SCOPE by Lulu La Certa Illustrations by Martin Dziallas The cosmos might not always control your destiny, but when it does, The Chop has experts on hand to keep you in the celestial-know. GEMINI – Even if you trip and fall: I recommend walking home drunk and with dreams rather than hard-nosed and worldly-wise. CANCER – Feel free to get carried away as much as you like. Just keep in mind: at some point you still got to wake up and be someone. TAURUS – If only we grew wiser with each breath... Not each of your decisions should be preceded by careful calculations. VIRGO – You long to be made into life? You’re not a clay figure, are you? Start kneading yourself – it might get messy, but not for long. LIBRA – Burn your fire for no witness only if you plan to share that online at some point. Creative ordeals are easier bared when shared. SCORPIO – I know you’re not often at home. But won’t you open a window sometime? Oh, you’re developing some sort of dust fetish? That’s cool. SAGITTARIUS – Possibilities are endless, but the paths to them demand some moxie. If you feel like quitting now, then try a little harder. ARIES – You wanna bounce and leap and dance through summer? You’re lighter on your feet when you’ve left some things behind. CAPRICORN – Hey, you’ve been sitting in that corner too long. Trade your observation skills for a sense of rhythm! Dance because you know the song. AQUARIUS – You won’t be walking the safest so learn to keep an eye the time. It will grow into soon.
always streets out all a habit
PISCES – There will be hurt and frustration for at least one of you, but sometimes the ones we trust may have to give up listening. LEO – In times when love lives are more about keeping it cool than keeping the thrill, someone has to speak of a feeling. Why can’t it be you?
