We have been witness to a miracle of God in the last century, as foretold by the prophets, of the return of the Jewish people from the four corners of the earth back to their ancient homeland. The miracle continues as Jewish people from around the world continue to heed the call to make Aliyah and come “home”. The International Christian Embassy Jerusalem is honoured to have played a role in helping to facilitate this return through having funded an estimated 138 000 Jewish people to make Aliyah to date. We have also committed to fund Jews from Ethiopia who are ready to come to Israel this year, of which the first 80 arrived in March. In 1980 the nation of Israel passed the Jerusalem Law which affirmed that Jerusalem is the eternal undivided capital of the Jewish people. (Jerusalem was the ancient capital of King David over 3000 years ago). The Arab nations immediately responded to the Jerusalem Law by threatening an oil embargo against the nations who did not withdraw their embassies to Tel Aviv. All 13 foreign Embassies based in Jerusalem at the time, complied and moved from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv. A group of Christians felt this was an insult to Israel and as a result felt led to open an International Christian Embassy (ICEJ), based in Jerusalem, representing Christians around the world, who recognise Jerusalem and choose to stand in solidarity with the State of Israel. The ICEJ’s mandate is to comfort the people of Israel according to Isaiah 40:1-2. They do this in various ways, as also commanded in Romans 15v27 “For if the gentiles have been partakers of their spiritual things, their duty is also to minister to them in material things”. ICEJ funds flights of Jewish people returning home, is the major sponsor of the Holocaust Survivor Homes, builds bomb shelters and funds various projects to care for the vulnerable in Israel. CANDICE NICHOLLS Candice is a qualified dietician presently working as a lecturer and clinical supervisor at the University of the Western Cape. As a wife and mom, nutrition, family and faith are very important aspects that make up her daily life. Jesus’ words on the Cross was, “Father, forgive them...” (Luke 23: 34). We often find ourselves in situations we never fathomed. We question God, “Why, how, when?” These could be in good or not so good situations. But little do we acknowledge that wherever we find ourselves may be a part of God’s perfect plan. Jeremiah 29 verse 11 reminds us that God’s plan is to prosper and not harm us. So, each day that we live, we choose to live in the will of our Father. It is the day that He predestined; and I believe that each day’s challenge is there to build our character for the better, to strengthen our spiritual nature and to contribute to constructing or reconstructing ourselves. TCLMAG found itself in an unexpected setback but glory to God for His supernatural comeback. What God puts together, no man can separate. So many things vie for our attention in today’s world. If you’re desperate for balance, you need to put boundaries in place. By Angelique Du Toit Balance and boundaries fit like a hand in a glove. Trying to create balance in your life without having boundaries is like trying to sit on a two-legged stool. People are desperate to find balance—a state of equilibrium – that will require you to put essential personal, work, physical, social, spiritual and financial boundaries in place. Boundaries that define you. Boundaries that define what is yours and what is not yours.

WHY BOUNDARIES? A boundary shows you where you end and where someone else begins, leading you to a sense of ownership of your life. Boundaries establish how you treat yourself, how you allow others to treat you, and how you treat them. Boundaries are meant to set up a frontier that says, ‘so far and no more.’ This frontier protects one’s self-worth. When your boundaries are clearly defined you can be confident in protecting your time with ordered planning and action. Your emotions are calm and energy is preserved as you honestly say ‘no’ to time-wasters and people wanting you to do what they should be doing for themselves. Having clearly defined boundaries is essential to your peace of mind, and your boundaries will give you the opportunity to take full responsibility for your own life— which is a glorious freedom.

TAKE OWNERSHIP OF YOUR LIFE You are responsible for yourself, and you are only responsible to others and not for them! Of course, your spouse and children are a high priority. The question is, however, how much do you do for them that they should be doing themselves? Don’t allow an over-developed sense of responsibility to flood your life with fatigue. Setting boundaries takes courage, but it’s worth the price! Remember, your boundaries are the conveyor of your personal power and this will give you more equilibrium than you can imagine.

USE YOUR TIME WISELY Improper use of time is usually the reason we lack balance and stability. Do you have boundaries around your time? These should be established to protect your spiritual life—time spent with God and fellow believers. Your emotional, physical, sleep, leisure and personal ‘me’ time is vital to your sense of wellbeing. Perhaps it is time to reorder your life remembering that you cannot give what you do not have. Note to self: in the reordering, stop trying to be all things to all people. Stay true to your purpose and what you were created to do.

LEARN TO SAY NO Boundaries are not meant to be

negative and self-serving. Instead, these invisible lines around what is important in your life are to be communicated in the most positive of ways. Let your yes, honestly be yes. And when you say no, you can do it with kind confidence. There will be 101 opportunities for people and circumstances to waste your time. One of my life mottos is this: You are welcome to conduct anything you want in your time, but if it includes me and it doesn’t align with my values and purpose, then not on my time. Reinforce your boundaries with positive behaviour and speech. Boundaries are never meant to be harsh, negative or create vindictive outcomes. There will be unrealistic expectations put on you from time to time. Therefore, a crucial conversation you may need to have with people at some stage, is that their poor planning does not constitute an emergency on your part. All of the above, of course, depends on how sincerely you would like to create a semblance of balance in this accelerated age. For the Lord promises, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light,” (Matthew 11:29-30).

Dr Sibongiseni Tunzelana Thotsejane is a bubbly, rambunctious voice on the line. “Call me Sybs,” she insists, as she eagerly engages me in conversation about her whereabouts and the opportunity to share her personal story. She has just come back from an awards evening where she was recognised as the National Woman in Business Champion at the South African Small Business Awards. This adds to a plethora of credentials and awards the acclaimed doctor has already received over the years. As the CIO and co-founder of a multi award-winning technology innovations company, Sybs is one busy woman making waves in the industry. It’s hard to believe that this powerful business entrepreneur, currently completing her second Doctorate through a leading international university, was once a naïve little girl growing up in the dusty streets of an Eastern Cape township. Back then, ambitions of becoming a trailblazer in ICT were a distant objective, and yet today, Dr Sybs is living her dream and making an impact in global arenas.

FREE YOUR MIND FIRST Sybs had to overcome unsurmountable challenges and a Bantu education in rural Eastern Cape to realise her vision of becoming an entrepreneur. Despite the odds, she knew that she needed to change her mindset first. “I had to learn to free myself from the mental strongholds and mind blocks I had developed, while getting help when it was available,” she explains. Thankfully, with the help of a committed and loving family, Sybs realised early on that she had a natural flair and love for computers and programming. “I was also fortunate to have great childhood friends who added so much value to my life, and they suggested that we attend basic computer programming courses over weekends and school holidays offered by the Computer Society of the former Border Technikon, now known as Walter Sisulu University. We called ourselves, ‘The Big 4’.”

Sybs soon realised that she loved and excelled at computer programming. “It is amazing to share that life has come full circle; I am now a Lecturer at Walter Sisulu University at the Department of Applied Informatics and Mathematical Sciences, teaching young leaders from the Eastern Cape computer skills.” With the belief that anything truly is possible with the right attitude, Sybs quickly empowered herself through education and is now a recognised industry leader with over 20 years of experience in ICT. She continues to develop herself as a self-proclaimed ‘life-long learner’ and has worked with top brands and recognised industry icons from around the world. The call has always been to dream big, work hard and achieve more than what was expected of her. “It has taken me years to understand my intelligence quotient (IQ), my emotional quotient (EQ), and my spiritual quotient (SQ) in the midst of real-life challenges with real life confrontations. I had to embrace being #ProudlyHuman with

all the positives and the negatives that co-exist.” Today Sybs works hand-in-hand with her sister and best friend, Unathi Tunzelana, to bring about trailblazing technology innovations to Africa through Flavalite Innovations – a 100% black female-owned South African tech business.

WOMAN ON THE RISE In 2011, Sybs became the very first woman in Africa to obtain a data analytics specialisation with a PhD in Information Systems (majoring in Digital Analytics) at the University of Cape Town, with an exchange programme to Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada. “I had to take leaps of faith venturing into the unknown including countries unknown to me. It has also taken me an ongoing life-long learning and consciousness while guided by my highest priority values,” she explains. Sybs is now a mover and shaker; a proud innovator and mentor in the tech space. She continues to break the mould in a predominantly maleorientated industry and her hard work is quickly paying off. In 2017, she was among the winners of South Africa’s 50 Inspirational Women in Technology and Innovations. “I started companies from applied research done during my years of studying. I developed the first ever process model for adopting and implementing Digital Analytics in the world and tested it in five countries (South Africa, England, Finland, North America and Canada).” From materialising business dreams to leading teams and influencing young entrepreneurs, Sybs remains humble and knows that it takes selfawareness and dedication to achieve your dreams. This continues to open many doors for the determined ICT mogul. “I had an opportunity of spending time with the Analytics Team at Google Incorporated head office 20

in Silicon Valley, San Francisco in 2008. I have also added value in the sectors of Aerospace, Maritime, Defense, Education and Financial Services Providers (FSPs).”

FAMILY FIRST Family and faith have always been driving forces in her life. “I come from a family that has demonstrated unconditional love and has the right mix of crazy, sprinkled with chaos,” she jokes. It was a chance encounter at a tent revival meeting in Bhisho, Eastern Cape, where Sybs, together with her entire family, made a decision to serve Christ. “When the alter call was made, we all went to the front, without understanding what we were doing, however there was such a peaceful anointed Spirit at the revival meeting,” she explains. “We were then discipled as a family and grew together in Christ.” Faith continues to be the firm foundation of her life. “Daily I meditate and pray for an increase in love, loyalty, faith, truth, wisdom, forgiveness, obedience to God, and so much more. I have learned to choose to start with the girl in the mirror and encourage her to grow; that is where my influence starts, what follows after that is out of my control, and that is okay.” Her motivation to succeed has certainly spilled over into various areas of her life. “As a child, I was winning Mathematics Olympiads in the Eastern Cape Province, getting awards for provincial English spelling bee’s with 100% Gold Awards, and creating tablets while receiving Awards at Science Festivals, and

yet, my older sister and brother ensured that I lived a balanced and cultured life.” And it certainly seems that all Sybs touches turns to gold. “My sister encouraged me to model,” she adds. Naturally, Sybs went on to win competitions and even competed at a national finals event as a young model. Next was music and Sybs quickly developed a keen love for the music industry, thanks to the influence of her older brother – a big hip hop fan – who has since passed on; and her sister who ran a ‘gospo-jazz’ program for a local radio station when they were younger. This passion continues and at present, Sybs is currently working on her first mixtape called LoveOlution Dot Net. “Here I encourage people to embrace who they are, where they come from and their own ethnicity. My first single is called: #MoloMolo and can be obtained for free online with a music video with subtitles on YouTube.”

A HIGHER CALLING Whether in music, mentorship or business, Sybs is an inspiration to all who meet her. As an academic and ICT powerhouse, she continues to pave the way for African entrepreneurs to take up their rightful places as leaders in society. “Today I mentor women, youth and disabled young leaders doing post-graduate studies globally. I have also led in male dominated sectors.” Sybs presently serves on various boards and continues to leave her mark in the industry as a non-executive director at Sagarmatha Technologies, an African company leading in the fourth industrial revolution (4IR / Industry 4.0); and as Director of Khanyisa Land Primary Cooperative, with headquarters in Gauteng. “I am also forging strategic business partnerships with companies around the world.”

Sybs believes that once you are aligned to your calling in life, success is sure to follow. “The accolades chase you when you live according to your purpose. Most of the awards that we have won recently have been by invitation and by being nominated by other people or organisations that we were not even aware of.” Mentorship is very important, and Sybs aims to learn as much as she can from those who have gone before her. “I have shadowed other women globally who have founded Fortune 500 companies and continue to be mentored by Boards of Advisors from Canada, USA, UK and South Africa.”

With vision from God and faith to act it out, we can expect the best seasons ahead. By Angus Buchan We need to exercise our faith in God like never ever before. It is almost like the climax of the ages is at hand. Some older people may sigh how much longer can this continue because of the pain that has taken place in this past year. But our confidence is in Christ and in Him alone. Philippians 1:6 (NKJV) says, “Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ”.

GET YOUR HEAD IN THE GAME It is with faith in Jesus Christ that we are confident of stepping into the future with much joy and much expectation. As Proverbs 29:18 has it, “Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint.” And that leads me to a very important question: what is your game plan for 2019? If you say you don’t have one, that’s as good as aiming at nothing – and you’re sure to hit it! Take time to ask God to give you a simple game plan for the seasons ahead. And with every plan you make, don’t forget to add “God willing” at the end, because it’s only by the grace of God we can expect to live

another day. God willing, our short-term game plan is to take care of our family and our staff, and to pay our debts. The long-term vision is: “Where to from here?”

CONFIDENTLY PASSIONATE “If your vision doesn’t scare you, it’s not big enough.” It must also excite you and make you get out of bed in the morning. It must be something your whole family can participate in. If they can’t, then leave it, for what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his soul, his family and those dearest to him? It must be a vision that’s also going to benefit your community and, indeed, the nation. I really believe we’re on the verge of a breakthrough in our beloved South Africa. When the men and women of the land seek God for vision and direction, this will create opportunities for everybody and we can only have a better year than what we’ve had. The most important ingredient for a successful vision is to make sure it’s from God. “A good idea is not always a God idea”, as we’ve said many times. If you’re confident your vision is what God would have you do, then you have nothing to fear.

EXCITED ANTICIPATION My father always used to say that if you get up in the morning and you don’t feel like going to work, change your job, because that’s where you spend most of your life. If you have passion for your vision, if it’s something you love doing, something that makes you go the extra mile and work much harder, you will surely succeed. Don’t think because it’s not working out in the beginning that it’s not of God. Don’t fear a few trials and tests because they will surely come. If it was so easy, everybody else would have done it as well. Therefore, let us enjoy this present season, because time is ticking away and loved ones are going to be with the Lord day by day.

MOVED BY FAITH Many of you may be in the middle of a shift in season. Some may be preparing to be married or go to university. Some may be gearing up towards a new business proposition; whether it be an engineering company, a farm, a promotion in a business. Each and every one of these areas will require faith. “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen,” (Hebrews 11:1, NKJV). St Augustine said, “Faith is to believe what you have not seen and the reward of that faith is to see what you believed.” We cannot face this season without faith in God. How do we exercise our faith? Well, it comes by spending time in The Word of God (Romans 10:17). So, let us be men and women of faith, as we look forward to a new season with Jesus. A season with vision and a game plan. Not looking back but moving forward and looking forward to that great and amazing day when Jesus Christ will come and visit us personally to take us home to be with Him in paradise forever. It really is a win-win situation, that we the believers find ourselves in! Paul said in The Book of Romans 14:8 (NKJV), “For if we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s.” That is a wonderful promise and a blessing for us.

SHOULD WE PAY IT? Angus Cornelius looks at the life of Jesus to help us deal with monetary affairs and the payment of taxes.

It has been said that the only things that are certain in life are death and taxes. As much as we may dislike paying tax, it is something we all must do at some point. But, what does the Bible say about tax? In Matthew 22, the Pharisees tried to trick Jesus by asking Him if they should pay tax to Caesar. Of course, Jesus was wise to their plans and answered: “Give unto Caesar what is due unto him”. If you ponder on what Jesus is actually saying here, there is greater wisdom in his answer than simply diffusing a potential trap of the Pharisees.

AN EARTHLY CURRENCY Jesus’ above statement highlights two points, the first is the more obvious one – as Christians we are not exempt from taxes. My reasoning for this is based on taking the moral high ground. Tax evasion is a crime. It may seem like a victimless crime, but it remains a crime. We do not condone other crimes such as corruption, theft or murder, therefore we should not condone tax evasion. The second point highlights Jesus’ action to give the money to Caesar. This emphasises that money is an inherent currency of this earth, and not from the Kingdom of God. We are not meant to hold onto it or develop an attachment to money. On the contrary, money is meant to flow toward and away from us during the course of our lives on this earth. We should not struggle to part with

it. Put money in its rightful place, subservient to God.

JESUS HIMSELF PAID TAX Earlier in Matthew the temple tax collectors challenged Peter on whether Jesus paid temple taxes (Matthew 17:24 – 27). In this passage, Jesus asked Peter whether a king received tax from his own people / children or from others, to which Peter replied, “from others”. Jesus then confirmed that the citizens / king’s children were exempt from paying taxes. However, He went on to state that they should pay the tax so as not to offend those present. Jesus’ answer underscores the fact that taxes are a custom of this world and not part of the Kingdom of Heaven. However, He does not claim exemption. Jesus – God in the flesh – abided by the rules in order to avoid offending those present and in so doing, kept Himself blameless. The interesting part is that neither Jesus nor Peter seemed to have money to pay the temple tax at that

point. Jesus in turn instructed Peter to go catch a fish, and in the mouth of the fish, to find a coin which would pay their tax.

GOD ALWAYS MAKES A WAY Miraculously, Peter finds the money needed to pay their taxes in the mouth of a fish, as prophesied and called forth by Jesus Himself. In many ways, this is God’s way of confirming that He can and will provide the money needed to pay taxes. At times we may feel we cannot afford to pay taxes, but we should remind ourselves that our God is able to provide all our needs through His riches. If God can place a coin in the mouth of a fish, we can trust Him to give us what we need to meet all of our needs, including our tax obligations. The Bible calls us to follow the example of Jesus. This calling includes all aspects of the way He lived. If the Son of God does not assume exemption from taxes, we as His followers should follow His lead. THE CHRISTIAN LIFESTYLE

Tsholofelo Kukuni serves as the associate pastor with HeartCry missionary Richard Raven at Hope Bible Church in Bloemfontein. With a strong missional focus, Hope Bible Church aims to be a healthy, Christcentred church in the community – evangelistic, truth loving, sacrificially serving, united in love, and missional minded. In this role, Tsholofelo is an avid preacher of the Word and has been groomed to lead and serve as the Senior Pastor. One major focus of Tsholo’s ministry has been outreach to university students and young adults. He has a strong desire to see Hope Bible Church involved in planting biblical churches in the nearby townships where he grew up. As a native South African Tswana, Tsholo is a competent speaker of Setswana, Sesotho, and English. He is a married to Keitumetse and together they have two children.

I spent hours studying the Bible, just so I could confuse the Christians who used to visit my sister. By this time, I was a drunkard, a smoker, and a promiscuous young man. My family knew very little of this dark side of me. I cannot recall a single weekend that I spent sober.”

He did, and I believed that Christ poured out His blood in atonement for my sin.” Psalm 8:4: “What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him?” “Unbeknownst to myself, I had been saved. But I went to a church that I had previously mocked, and I asked them to help me to be accepted by God. I told them what had happened in the house, and they explained to me that what I had experienced was the saving work of the Spirit of God in my heart.” “God had started to make me feel

“The desire to pastor came to me very early in my Christian walk. I began to study and read more and more. My new-found convictions were solidified as I shared the Gospel in the streets. I began to consider giving my life to the ministry of the Word of God. I notified my pastor of my intentions to study for ministry in 2007. After much prayer and searching, I finally stumbled upon Christ Baptist Seminary. After being accepted to study at CBS, I began my B.Th. degree in 2010 and have never looked back.” “Having observed closely the lives and ministries of my elders and having read much of the theology and practice of men of church history, I am more convinced now than ever that I must work in the

He then demonstrated to me how blind I was.” Graciously, the Lord allowed Keitumetse to see that the onceand-for-all sacrifice for sin was His Son Jesus. “Jesus was not presented to us as God in this cult or even as

the Saviour,” she explains. “We were taught that He delivers us from the calamities of this world, but we were never told about our spiritual condition before God.” “I realized then that I had to abandon this cult. The entire book of Hebrews opened my eyes to the Gospel, especially since this cult emphasized sacrifices. I now know that it is by God’s sovereign grace that I was saved; it was not anything that I did, but only what Jesus had done for me on the Cross.”

REACHING OUT HBC has a vision to plant likeminded churches in the townships of Bloemfontein. “This is an exciting project for us that is in the pipelines,” explains Tsholo. “We are looking at planting a church in one of the more affluent townships so that we can at least have two strong likeminded churches in order to, in the near future and if the Lord wills, plant in the more informal settlements of Bloemfontein. 5 STEPS TO A HAPPIER, HEALTHIER Make the switch and ditch unhealthy habits this winter. By Dietician, Candice Nicholls It’s time to prepare your body and mind for the seasons ahead. Here are a few ways to kickstart your health journey this winter.

SAY NO TO JUNK FOOD. Ditch the potato crisps, chocolates and cookies which are all high in saturated fat, refined sugars and salt. These foods offer very little nutrients and are one of the main contributors to weight gain. Switch to whole foods. If you’re looking for something wholesome and warm this winter, whip out a blender and prepare your own fresh soups with seasonal vegetables. The vitamins and minerals in vegetables can help to boost the immune system, add some fibre to your day, and give your body the energy it needs to keep moving.

IF YOU LOVE YOUR HEART, GET MOVING! Ditch the desire to watch movies or series in front of the television! Having a low physical activity level contributes to weight gain and increases the risk of insulin resistance and heart disease. And let’s face it, it’s hard not to nibble on unhealthy snacks while watching a movie. Switch to a daily exercise routine that gets your heart pumping and legs moving. Even just a moderate activity such walking for 30 minutes a day can have remarkable benefits, not just to your weight but to your mood as well. If you can’t commit to a routine just make small changes like taking the stairs instead of the lift at work. Or walk to the shops instead of driving. If you have dogs, get out and take them for a walk, or join a walking or running club in your area.

THINK BEFORE YOU DRINK. Say no to sugar sweetened beverages! While soda and juices are tasty, they are a poor alternative to good old fashioned water. For every glass of soda or juice that your drink, you are adding at least 6 – 8 teaspoons of sugar to your body, which can add to your waistline and increase the risk of developing conditions like diabetes. Switch to water which you can flavour with lemon, mint, cucumber or any fruit for a delicious, refreshing drink.

FOR EARTH’S SAKE, GO GREEN! Instead of meat, opt for some plant-based protein for a greener option! Too much red meat can aggravate conditions such as gout and arthritis and puts extra pressure on the kidneys and arteries. Switch to plant based proteins such as lentils, beans and chickpeas. A delicious chick pea curry or vegetable wrap is a healthy alternative for lunch or supper. Plant proteins are also packed with fibre to keep you fuller for longer and can help prevent those mid-day slumps.

START SMALL. Remember, small changes can lead to big results later. We live in a fast-paced instant society where access to unhealthy convenience food is literally a block away. The change however starts with us and the small decisions we make daily can have a lasting impact. So, jog on past your local fast food outlet as you sip your home-made soup and enjoy the time you have conversing with God. Whether you start or end the day this way, it’s guaranteed to leave you feeling refreshed and renewed! 32

Istanbul is a city rich in tradition and historical significance. It is also home to a diverse and hospitable people. Once a cradle of human civilization, today it is an exhilarating hub of business and trade in the Middle East. Another interesting thing to do here is to find a local Turkish Bath, known as a haman, and experience the Turkish tradition of public cleansing and relaxation which dates to ancient times.

THE HEART OF THE PEOPLE Travelling with children in a non-English speaking country certainly had its challenges. Besides trying to get around with toddlers – on trains, busses, ferries, taxis and more – we also had the difficulty of navigating Turkish streets and foreign signposts, locating kid-friendly restaurants and places of interest, and keeping cool amidst the blistering summer heat. However, braving the distance with children in Istanbul seemed to be a blessing in disguise. In fact, we were pleasantly surprised by the hospitality of the locals, often going out of their way to direct us, even giving up their seats on a packed train to accommodate us. One morning during breakfast in our hotel, we were surprised to find that the head waiter had assigned an assistant to our table for the duration of our meal. Her job was simply to hold the baby, so we could all eat peacefully. I had never experienced such thoughtfulness while travelling. They identified our need as a family and happily ensured that we were made to feel as comfortable (and well fed) as possible. It was simple acts of kindness like these that made our time in Istanbul more memorable. Although we had initially come to experience the local sites and attractions, it was the people of Istanbul that had made the biggest impact on us during our stay. Another example of this took place during a day-trip to the local markets. At one point on our journey, after exiting a very busy train station, my husband and I quickly realised that we wouldn’t be able to make it up a lengthy flight of stairs with two strollers and no help. Before I could even raise my concerns, a friendly older gentleman quickly picked up one end of my kid’s stroller and without words, gestured toward the stairs where he swiftly helped us through the overwhelming crowds. He then quietly nodded in my direction and disappeared before we could even express our gratitude for this small act of kindness. Indeed, we experienced incredible generosity from the locals wherever we went. Kindness and tea – two of the trademarks of the Turkish culture. After 10 glorious summer days soaking up the culture, traditions and decadent food of Turkey, we returned to a cold and wet Cape Town. We stocked up on chocolates and indigenous treats including Turkish delight – which was unlike any of the variations I had ever tasted in South Africa. We left with stomachs (and hearts) full; richer for the experience of delving into the Turkish culture and exposing our children to a new world of possibilities beyond our borders.

INTERESTING THINGS WE LEARNED IN ISTANBUL: •

Istanbul is the only city in the world which is both in Europe and Asia geographically. We had the rare opportunity of travelling via bus from one continent to the next! Istanbul is one of the biggest cities in the world, with around 15 million population, which is more than 177 countries around the world. Istanbul has the third oldest subway in the world, built in 1875. London has the oldest, followed by New York. Grand Bazaar is the biggest old covered bazaar in the world, with over 3000 shops. It is chaotic on any given day and I found myself praying aloud that I wouldn’t lose my family in the masses! Hagia Sophia was the largest church in the world for about 900 years. Today is serves as a museum and tourist attraction in Istanbul.

When faced with unexpected expenses that would affect the livelihood of her family, single mother, Natasha Marco, decided to lean on the ultimate source to provide for her needs. As a single mother of two boys, Natasha Marco understands the struggles of trying to provide for a family and making ends meet every month. She had often heard about the power of starting your day in prayer and so decided that she would wake up early every morning to spend time with God and cover her family in prayer daily. “Initially, it lasted like five minutes or so, but each day I went on my knees and it started to help,” explains Natasha. “The prayers got longer, more imitate… I wasn’t feeling alone in the room anymore… My prayer time turned into a date with Jesus and I loved it.”

WHEN CHALLENGES ARISE As Natasha’s prayer life blossomed, she learned to unburden her heart and give thanks to God. She began to cherish her time with God, but this did not stop the reality of her daily battles and the looming financial pressures she was experiencing as a single mother. First, Natasha’s car needed urgent repairs and she did not have the finances to pay for it. Within the same week, her eldest son was accepted into the high school of his dreams and Natasha was overjoyed, until she realised that this would require significant enrolment costs. Suddenly she was short thousands of Rands and her son’s future hung in the balance. “So, life had me with my back against the wall,” explains Natasha. “Here I was a single mom with an amazingly gifted young man as my son, and I wanted to give him the best, but I couldn’t… financially I just couldn’t!” Natasha knew that she needed to rely on God for her breakthrough. “I stopped expecting and asking for help from ‘man’ and kept my conversations with God private - that was the only time I complained or brought up my worries. I didn’t see the need to tell anyone else besides God,” she explains. With much patience and faith that “God had this”, Natasha trusted that God would come through for her family.

GOD AT WORK Miraculously, God began to open doors to provide for her family. First, a family friend offered to pay for her vehicle and 38

Natasha praised God for the much-needed funds. Next, God gave her the strategy to shift around her monthly finances in order to pay for her son’s tuition. The plan was to fundraise further in order to pay for the shortfall. Her employers then called her in to say that they would match her fundraising efforts to help her son. In a matter of days, God had provided all the money she needed, and every cent was accounted for. “He came through for me, and in doing so, my sons saw the work of God. Every time God opened a door or blessed us miraculously, I called the boys into my room to tell them about it. They would stand and smile as if I was telling them about some kind of super hero movie! Sometimes we may doubt, but I think back and remind my boys of those moments, that there is a true living God watching out for us!” Natasha has experienced the power and provision of God. She took to Facebook to share about the goodness of God and her testimony video went viral with almost 10 000 views and several people reaching out to thank her and offer support. “It’s all about God,” says Natasha. “It became easier knowing God’s handling it all and I’m sitting back, trusting and being faithful to His Word and His promises to me.” “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours,” (Mark 11:24).

In South Africa, it is estimated that at least one million people – mostly children – have been diagnosed with Autism. We need to shed light on this condition to create a community of understanding and support.

Research has made clear that high quality early intervention can improve learning, communication and social skills, as well as underlying brain development. Those living with Autism may be different – but never less!

WHAT IS AUTISM

Liesel Gaffley, mom of two, shares her faith journey in rearing a son with Autism. After a battle to conceive, Liesel fell pregnant via IVF with her firstborn, Alexander. She recalls this as an exciting season – a time when the world stopped so that she could cherish every moment with her new baby. “When Alexander turned 18 months my world stopped yet again,” she explains. “Alexander became sick in hospital and refused to eat. He would cry constantly, and I knew something was wrong. At 2-and-a-half years old, doctors diagnosed Alexander with Autism and everything came crashing down for us.” Together with her husband, Liesel needed to find coping mechanisms to help her family transition during this very difficult time. “We fundraised month after month and God came

Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterised by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviours, speech and nonverbal communication. We now know that there is not one form of Autism but many subtypes, and each person with Autism can have unique strengths and challenges. Autism affects all ethnic and socioeconomic groups and can reliably be diagnosed from the age of 2. Though ASD ranges from mild to profoundly disabling, a diagnosis of ASD is an important turning point in a long journey.

WHAT’S NORMAL ANYWAY? A child with Autism may think and act differently but Autism does not imply that your child is ‘not-normal’. In fact, those with Autism are often found to 40

through in every way. We lacked nothing,” explains Liesel. “Today my son goes to the best school with the best teachers and therapies. I thank God every day for providing for us and for being there for me when times were hard. Alexander is starting to say a few words with the help of speech and occupational therapy. I thank God that He is doing amazing work in my son’s life and my son is a living miracle.”

A WARRIOR’S SPIRIT The name Alexander means ‘fighter of men’ or ‘warrior’. Liesel says that this rings true for her son in every way. “He is a warrior through the struggles of Autism. Even though he is mostly non-verbal, he is definitely a fighter. He is an amazing boy… loving, caring, made in God’s own image.” As an encouragement to others, Liesel says: “I know that there is help for kids with Autism and it’s certainly not a death sentence. They are all unique and different and that is okay. God made us all different in each way and I will raise Autism awareness in every way I can.” “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven,” (Matthew 18:3).

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE AND VISION OF YOUR NEW BOOK REDEFINING RED? “The overall premise of Redefining Red comes from my years in front of the camera as a television broadcaster. As a journalist, when the red light on the camera came on, it meant you’re on-GO! But typically when we experience red light moments in our life, the opposite is true. Red light moments leave us paralyzed, afraid, desperate, lost, and fearful, among other negative feelings. It occurred to me that we don’t have to respond to red lights this way. Quite the contrary. In fact, if we look deep within ourselves I’m certain we will all find there’s a

“It’s so easy to get distracted by what life throws our way. We lose sight of our purpose and begin to focus on our situation or red light moment. If we would ever get to the place where we stop, shift our focus from self or red-light situations, to the One who knows all things, the One who knew us before we were in our mother’s womb, the One who will never leave us and never forsake us. This refocusing will help us begin to tap into faith, peace and joy that will help get us through these low

seasons. We must remember, He is the One who has the blueprints of our life. That means He knows the beginning from end. It’s like an architect, they can already envision the finished project even prior to having one forklift brought in. They already know what it will look like and the same is true of our Creator. He already knows! I love this – When we shift our focus from our red-light situation to Him, He is able to help us turn our red-light moments into green light victories.”

WHAT DO YOU HOPE THE READER WILL GAIN FROM READING THIS BOOK? “I hope and pray the Lord opens the eyes of each reader’s understanding and that they have a real, tangible, life-changing encounter with Him. I pray each reader will have a better comprehension of what it means to “have the mind of Christ” operating in them. I’ll use the title of my first chapter to further answer this question and that is, ‘Red is the new Green’. What do I mean by that? Well, let me use this analogy, our best decision, best solutions, best plan of attack got us into the mess we are in. Have you ever thought about that? Our best thinking is still sub-par in comparison to our Heavenly Father. Realizing this, will help us to shift our focus to the Lord and His plans for our life when life’s red-lights manifest. The Bible says His thoughts are above our thoughts and His ways supersede our ways. Let’s be honest, absolutely no one can comprehend the mind of Christ. I think knowing this helps us latch ahold of Him, realizing He knows best, versus trying to come up with ‘our’ best solution to a red light. When our focus is on the King, the Bible gives us an amazing promise, “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You,” (Isaiah 26:3). So, peace is your promise even during life’s red-light moments.” THE CHRISTIAN LIFESTYLE

When presented with the choice to abort her unborn baby, Kim Dippenaar made the decision to trust God like never before. By Tamsyn Cornelius Pregnancy is an exciting time for many couples. For Kim and Jaco Dippenaar, the news of their first pregnancy, just a year after marriage, was a wonderfully thrilling time in their lives. “I remember being very excited and I couldn’t wait to share the news with Jaco,” Kim explains. Kim immediately called to set up a doctor’s appointment and like many other new moms, she began to dream of what life would be like with a new little bundle of joy. “They did some blood tests and confirmed that I was indeed pregnant. Jaco and I were so super excited about this amazing news.”

EARTH-SHATTERING NEWS However, Kim’s joy was short-lived. Two days after receiving the good news, she received a call from the doctor’s office to say that they needed to speak to her in person. Immediately, they could tell that something was wrong. “I frantically phoned Jaco and got hold of my mom and some friends and family members.” The pair anxiously entered the doctor’s surgery and was told that Kim had Rubella or German measles. “Wait… what? I tried to focus on what the doctor was saying but found myself stuck in a tidal wave of panic and confusion. Was this really happening?”

The doctor then went on to explain the devastating effects of Rubella on an unborn foetus. Very often, the illness is passed to the unborn child and can lead to miscarriage, preterm birth, or stillbirth, as well as a variety of birth defects. “Jaco and I looked at one another in complete shock. We were speechless, like two dears caught in the headlights.” At that moment, the couple were faced with the devastating choice to abort their first child. “This was one of the toughest moments in my life. I was only 23-years-old and facing the choice of life or death. The experts were telling us that we were crazy

if we chose not to abort, but when doubt said, ‘give up’, hope whispered ‘there is still a chance’.”

HOLDING ONTO HOPE A little overwhelmed, the Dippenaars decided that they needed some time to ponder on all their options. “At this point I could actually hear my heart throbbing in my head and in my ears. I could not believe this news. It could not be true… Jaco then told the doctor that we needed time to think about the process and pray before we made this big decision. I was speechless. I could not even cry.” Together they climbed into their car and started calling friends and family to cover them, and their unborn child, in prayer. “We then drove around aimlessly for a while, still in shock.” While in the car, Jaco looked up at Kim and with conviction said that he didn’t want them to abort their baby. “I agreed and right there, we decided to commit this to the Lord, choosing life over the option to abort.” It took a number of days to process all the information, but the couple stood strong in their decision to save

the life of their child. “We had many people covering us in prayer and we trusted that God knew exactly what He was doing.”

A LIFE-GIVING MIRACLE “A few days later, we went to see a different gynaecologist who took one look at me and said, “you’ll be fine”. It was almost as if his words of life spoke into my very being, fuelling me with even more hope than I needed and igniting a faith in my heart that things were really going to be just fine.” And he was right. After a few more tests, it seemed that the baby was developing normally. “By the time our first sonar arrived, we were both so overjoyed to hear our little one’s heart beating for the first time. Jaco and I just cried. It’s all we needed to hear.” “We walked out of that hospital that day feeling so different and so hopeful…” After every scan, things seemed to be doing well and the baby looked healthy and strong. “Months went by and I gave birth to a beautiful and perfectly healthy baby girl who we named Tyra Lee,

meaning ‘warrior from the sheltered place’.”

A PROMISE FULFILLED Today, Tyra Lee is 11-years-old and thriving. Kim and Jaco are grateful for the opportunity of raising her and have since added another two children to their family. “I thank God often for allowing me to have made the right choice. His Spirit prompted us toward making the right decision and I know He is a faithful Father. We could not have done it without the amazing grace of our Lord Jesus and the wonderful support from our friends and family.” Deuteronomy 30:19: “Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live!” To all those mommies waiting for their babies to be born, no matter what the circumstances or what the challenges are, Kim reminds us about the promises of God in Jeremiah 29:11. “This is a promise we can hold onto as parents or guardians. And no matter where you find yourself, God has a plan for your life. As long as you are alive you can access His wonderful grace and His unchanging love.”

THE IMPORTANCE OF HAVING A WILL By Robin Twaddle and Associates. Many people believe that all of their hard-earned wealth will go to the state if they die without a will. Fortunately, it doesn’t work that way. If you die without a will, the law of intestate succession regulates distribution of your estate, along family lines. If you are married with children when you die, your estate is divided among your spouse and children. If you have no spouse, your estate is divided among your children. If you have neither, it is distributed to your parents and if no parents, your siblings; and so on. The relationships become ever more remote, but along lines of ascendance and descendance. If you die without a will and no living relatives can be found, your estate is held in the Guardian’s Fund and listed in the Government Gazette every year. If it remains unclaimed after 30 years, only then does the state get its hands on it. Regardless that the state will not easily get access to your hard-earned money if you die without a will, it is nevertheless a good idea to have one.

APPOINTING AN EXECUTOR When you die, there is more that comes into play than the distribution of your assets. An executor must be appointed to sort out your estate; you might want specific things or amounts given to specific people; if you have young children, they will need a guardian. An executor is the person who winds up your estate, files your final tax returns, pays your bills and transfers what is left to your beneficiaries. This person will have control over your assets and money and will be working closely (and hopefully empathetically) with your family for many months after you die. Choose a trustworthy person who will charge a fair fee for doing their work, instead of just taking a flat percentage of the value off the top. So, choose wisely; you can only make your choice known in your will. 46

UNDERSTANDING BENEFITS There are two types of benefits that flow from an estate. A bequest or a legacy is a specific asset or amount of money that is left to a specific person. An inheritance comprises the rest of your estate after all debts have been settled and bequests distributed – to your heirs. Intestate succession does not make provision for bequests. If you die without a will, your executor cannot give your golf clubs to your golfing buddy or a cash payment to your faithful employee or your church. These bequests can only be made in a will. Under intestate succession, your estate is distributed to your intestate heirs in proportions defined by law – usually equally. Only you can stipulate distribution amounts and do that in your will.

CHOOSING A GUARDIAN Under South African law, the age of majority is 18. If you die before your children are 18, they will need a guardian. If you don’t nominate a guardian, this may create tension among extended family, as they will have to make this important decision. A will is the best place to make your choice known. Also, unless you state otherwise, your children will receive their entire inheritance on the day they turn 18. However, many 18-year-olds will need help to manage their money until they have gained some life experience. The way to achieve this is to stipulate that their inheritance is held in trust until they reach an age that you choose, depending on the child (I once came across a will that said the inheritance had to be held in trust until the child turned 60! Clearly a wild child). Life is a gift from God, given in His time and taken in His time. Just as we need to be spiritually prepared for death at any time, we owe it to those we will leave behind to be prepared. Leaving a well-considered will is an essential part of that preparation.

When God and man walk together, closely, the line between what God said and what the person said is often blurred. There is such unison that you are no longer sure where the instruction came from. It feels like God backs what the person says as much as what He is instructing them to say. Here are some Biblical examples: Whose idea was it to grant Elisha a double portion? God’s or Elijah’s? (2 Kings 2:9). Did Samuel’s words get upheld by God or did he just always say exactly what God wanted him to? Whose idea was it to build God a temple? David or God? (2 Samuel 7:1-7). God backed what was in David’s heart even though He didn’t need a temple made with human hands (Isaiah 66:1). When God wants to destroy the children of Israel after Moses comes from the 40-day encounter, Moses interjects and disagrees with God and the Bible says, “Then the Lord relented and did not bring on His people the disaster He had threatened,” (Exodus 32:11-14).

WALK IN FREEDOM Your level of intimacy with God determines your level of freedom with God. We are called to freedom. It was for freedom, that Christ set us free. Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty and freedom. Freedom is the environment within which we operate but some people have a greater level of input because of their depth of relationship.

INCREASED INTIMACY Servants only do what they are instructed to, but friends and family are invited into the secrets and reasoning. Have a look at John 15:15 -16. Friends are brought into such a place that they can ask whatever they desire, because their hearts are so in tune with the Father’s heart. They wouldn’t dare ask something that would hurt the Father’s heart and thus God gives them a greater sphere within which to operate. This is what happens with Jesus on the earth 48

- the relationship between Him and God is so close that He only speaks what He hears God saying and He only does what He sees God doing. You cannot give your five-year-old son the keys to the Jeep, but you can when you teach him how to drive. The child has reached maturity and is ready for the next step and responsibility. It’s the same with inheritance. The more we mature, the better we steward our inheritance and the more fruitful the outcome is. When Paul addresses the division within the church in Corinth, we can see that the difference between a carnal (fleshly or immature) Christian and a spiritually mature one is the fruit that comes forth within community. A mature Christian sows unity and the immature, sows discord.

IMPROVED RELATIONSHIPS It’s important to realise that once we seek the Father’s heart, our relationships with those around us also become better. “But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another,” (1 John 1:7). A sign of maturity is therefore not only how we walk in communion with the Father, but also with others. We are on a journey of maturity and I sense that Father God desires to get you to maturity so that He can entrust you with a level of relationship that goes beyond just doing what you’re told. He wants your input as co-labourers, pressing into the future together. Many people desire the level of intimacy Moses had with God, but most people are not willing to climb the mountain to get there. There is a drawing near that costs you something and for many people that cost is not worth paying, even though their desire is intimacy and the more God so lovingly desires to give them. What about you? God is calling all of us deeper. Make time for the relationship and you will reap the fruit thereof.

WHAT IS THE FIRST STEP?

It is never too early to start thinking about your career and the many options available to you, should you be interested in becoming a Christian lawyer. It may not be an easy journey – you will be required to work hard, complete a recognised law degree, pass an admissions exam and a background check before you will be permitted to obtain a licence to practice. The Law Society will also conduct an interview with applicants to investigate their morals and honesty and to ensure that they intend to practice law with integrity. An applicant’s criminal record is carefully considered and weighed during this personal fitness phase. An applicant also must be at least 21 years old and either be a South African citizen or be entitled to legal residence before being able to practice law in the country. After qualification and admission into the industry, there are many options available to you to pursue a career linked to law. People with legal qualifications can be found in almost all areas of employment. Do your research and plan ahead so that you have an end goal in mind if this is the route you are considering.

Darrel Jonathan looks at the challenges and misconceptions present in our modern educational systems.

Education has become a challenge for many countries because it no longer seems to be producing young people who are contributing members of society. In fact, we are producing fewer people who contribute to society and more who seem to only be interested in education to get them big bucks. After World War Two, education was considered the great equaliser. It was supposed to challenge classism, end poverty and was expected to produce a higher quality person. People who have made the largest contribution to the world, have been those who pursued knowledge; who were more learned than the average individual. Is this not why education has long been considered the cure for the ills in our society? Here in South Africa, we look at our education system and often complain of all the problems that beset it. Classes are too big, teachers are under too much pressure, staff are not paid enough, and children are no longer interested in learning. The list is endless! Yet, when we look at the rest of the world, they seem to have similar, if not bigger, challenges.

THE CHALLENGES Many academics have sought ways to improve our modern education systems. These solutions would allow young people to have an improved educational experience or at least, prompt them to become better learners. This points to the fact that current systems are outdated. World renowned educationalist and creativity expert, Sir Ken Robinson explains: “They [education 52

systems] were designed for the economic circumstance of the Industrial Revolution”. Others suggest a better learning environment – from improved images used on classroom walls to upgraded classroom ventilation.

UNDERSTANDING THE PROBLEMS Before we attempt a solution, we probably need a better understanding of the problem. If we do not understand what education is supposed to achieve, then we cannot hope to evaluate how well any educational system is doing. A dictionary definition of education is: “The process of receiving or giving systematic instruction, especially at a school or university or: an enlightening experience. (e.g. Petrus is a good workman—it is an education to watch him)”. However, when you ask the question, “What do you mean by education?” an internet answer suggests that education is the process of acquiring the body of knowledge and skills that people are expected to have in society. A good education therefore develops a critical thought process in addition to learning accepted facts. It also encourages intellectual curiosity, which will lead to lifelong learning. Many of us accept that education is the first part of the internet answer but somehow hope that our children will receive the good education that the second part of the answer suggests. Teachers express the fact that not only do parents want their children to pass exams, but that they also expect teachers to teach their children good values and morals.

HOPE VS. REALITY The unfortunate reality is that critical thinking, intellectual curiosity or even positive values or morality are not being tested. Instead institutions of learning are judged by the percentage of learners who pass tests. The passing of exams is now what marks some schools as better than others. This has become the only means of determining how good a school or university is, and this has largely become our measuring tool when deciding where to send our children to be educated. The result of this system of education is that young people are not getting a “good education” and instead are taught merely how to pass exams. Rote learning and memorisation techniques have become hallmarks of what is taught at schools. In the meantime, our children spend more time learning how to regurgitate information on demand and less time developing critical thinking or character.

OUR RESPONSE The solution will not be a simple one. For education to change, we need to change! The only way that education will change is if we start having a greater expectation from our institutions of learning and it means that we too need to take responsibility. If you are sending your children to a “good school” (a school with a good pass rate), then you might be responsible for your child not getting the best education. As a society, we need to start putting pressure on existing structures to develop better educational paradigms or we need to start sending our children to schools that are looking at teaching them differently. There are schools who do develop a critical thought process, in addition to learning accepted facts. (and) also encourages intellectual curiosity, which will lead to lifelong learning. We just need to be willing to look for them. I am aware that there are few schools with this approach. As someone who facilitated the development of critical thinking with young people at Grade 11 level, I was often confronted by educators who marvelled at the drastic change in their learners. engaged and more focussed after having been shown how to critically think through situations with which they were faced.

GET INVOLVED Another big change that we as parents need to make is to get involved in our children’s learning. In Deuteronomy (Chapter 6: 1 – 15), God demands that children be taught by their parents. Parents are to “teach (them diligently to) your children and (you) shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.” The lesson here was that parents would teach their children about God and about loving Him with their whole being. As parents who may not be able to send our children to schools that give a more balanced education, we need to teach our children the values that are important to us. We need to make time to create excitement about learning and to help them to develop critical thinking.

FILLING THE VACUUM

Gary Chapman, in his book The Five Love Languages of Teenagers, says that one of the differences between contemporary teens and those from past generations is that they “(have) no clear definitions of what is right and wrong.” He points out that whereas past generations had Judeo-Christian values passed on from their parents, contemporary teenagers have withdrawn from the Church and other Christian activities. They are mostly growing up in a moral and religious vacuum. As parents we can teach our children godly values and to fear God. Teaching our children is our duty as a parent. “Bring up a child by teaching him the way he should go and when he is old, he will not turn away from it,” (Proverbs 22:6). This is not the responsibility of teachers but we, as parents, need to take ownership in the education of our young people.

Erin Williams brings the Word of God to life through beautiful ceramic creations at Selah Ceramics. By Tamsyn Cornelius It often takes a roadblock in our lives to find renewed purpose and identity. For Erin Williams, aged 34, it was a lack of motivation and passion in her previous career that inspired a move into ceramics as a viable career. As a young girl living and travelling around the world with her expat family, Erin had always loved art and the power of creative expression. She considered studying art at university level but opted for a degree in French instead.

TIME FOR CHANGE Over a decade ago Erin moved back to South Africa, but after a divorce and a career re-focus, she decided that it was time for change. After committing her life to Christ, in 2015 Erin launched Selah Ceramics, turning a creative hobby into a God-inspired business producing beautiful hand-crafted ceramicware showcasing the Word of God. “The Scriptures and the therapeutic nature of working with ceramics thrust me into an incredible healing journey out of brokenness, following a divorce, and into wholeness,” explains Erin. “I had been doing ceramics as a hobby for years and I started stamping bowls at my ceramics class. As I was recently born again and was hungrily devouring the Bible, I began stamping Scriptures.” This was the start of an inspired journey of creating ceramics with beautiful displays of Scripture. “The Word of God never gets old and that is where the focus is. There are so many beautiful promises within 58

the Bible,” adds Erin. “It has been quite an organic process. I think my work has grown with me. In the beginning I focused a lot on identity when I was hand painting and copying words I found with simple stamped verses. Then I started to develop my own script and I now do more hand-painted verses with floral or decorative motifs.” Erin’s designs are continually evolving, and her recent work has included fresh new lettering and playful hand-painted designs. “I have had to work hard at letting go of perfectionism and control in my process and this was really just another step into that child-like freedom and joy.”

A SPACE TO PAUSE “Selah means to pause in His presence and think about what you have just read or heard.” Erin explains that God has used her business to bring people into her life and has also given many the space to pause and consider what God is doing. “The Word is incredibly powerful and when breathed on by His Spirit, it is life giving (John 6:63). Several times

people have broken into tears when I have given them a bowl – Holy Spirit is a genius and knows what He is doing!” Erin works from her home studio in Hout Bay and continues to sell her work through select stockists as far afield as Umhlanga and Mpumalanga. “I love the power of God’s Truth, I believe it can change atmospheres and transform lives. I love that God can use these simple creations, simple expressions of worship, for His glory.” “I do believe the creative arts are a very powerful weapon that God loves to use to reach people, and creative arts have access to many places and people groups that perhaps cannot be reached by pastors or evangelists. SELF-CONTROL: LOUISE SWART Together with her husband, Louise had walked a long road of drug dependency. After finding Jesus, her life was completely transformed. and self-control. Against such things there is no law,” (Galatians 5: 22-23). A different lady from the community was selected to represent each fruit and share a personal story related to the manifestation of this fruit in their own lives.

GOODNESS: VERONICA BRITS Veronica once stared death in the eye before meeting Christ. At her lowest point she even attempted to take her own life. Today she proudly proclaims the goodness of God. “I had fallen short in many areas. I had made poor decisions and I had been dealt some really unfortunate cards. At times I would play my hand well, or worse I would play at a huge risk up the river impacting others and I nearly lost it all. One thing God showed me since my intimate walk with Him, is that goodness is not a thing I “seek” or “act” like in some situations. He is good. It is who He is. God talked into my character. He showed me the 60

integrity that moves in the accountability of my heart. No one needs to see it all the time, it’s deep commitment to morality and virtue. The essence of that goodness would start shining through my eyes. The world thinks it’s the blue eyes they see, but it’s not. We need to walk closely with Christ every day in order to grow in our faith. By Claudene Sebolai.

In almost any circumstance in life, growth is inevitable. As important as growth is for human development, so too is it for spirituality. It is said that Jesus “grew and became strong; He was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on Him”, (Luke 2:40). There is so much advice on spiritual growth; however, allow us to share a couple of key things which we believe is foundational and important in our faith walk. If you’re looking to grow in your relationship with God, then the following factors are important to encourage your spiritual maturity:

BE IN CONSTANT FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD. Talk to God and wait for His response. Yes, God too can talk, and He just loves conversation with His children. Include the Lord in all you do, when you are on the mountain and when you are in a valley. Do it until it becomes second nature to you.

READ, READ, READ! Read your Bible. Here you will encounter God’s interaction with His creation. You will see how He loves, protects and provides for His people. Start reading small portions and set aside time every day to delve into the Word of God. Even if this is just for five minutes each day, prioritize time to read the Word and enjoy getting to know your Creator. You’ll find that the Bible has something for

every occasion. Of course, you can add other Christian literature to your reading list too and gain insight from other believers who are also walking closely with Jesus. Connect to a church family. Alone you can only do so much, but when in community, we are able to go deeper and grow together. Join a church family and become a partaker, not just a spectator. Your church family can help identify your passion and might have programmes to facilitate your growth. Not only that, you will be able to study God’s Word together and grow spiritually with other believers. Here you will find a support system and other believers who can hold you accountable to your word. You will no longer have to go through life’s journey all by yourself. Spiritual growth is not an overnight thing; it is a lifetime journey. King David, well advanced in years, wrote Psalm 23 and still articulates his journey of growth with God. “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters, He refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for His name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me,” (Psalm 23: 1-4). Enjoy your journey, commit to the process and grow in grace.

CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT GOD WANTS TO USE Unlocking the promises of God for this generation. By Pastor Bradley Van Reenen. As a generation, we find ourselves at a critical juncture that will determine the future of our nations, cities, communities and families. This juncture will determine whether we wander in the wilderness for the next 40 years - always hoping but never attaining, always seeking but never finding, always wanting but consistently settling. This nexus presents us with a ‘kairos’ moment (a propitious moment for decision or action); a once in a lifetime opportunity. If accurately administered, this moment will ultimately determine the power and speed at which we will witness transformation and systemic change to affect all spheres of life and every mountain of influence.

THE PROMISED LAND The Israelites, under the leadership of Moses, found themselves in a different era and setting. Despite the differences, a kairos moment remains a kairos moment. They too, found themselves at a Godordained opportune moment in time, after exiting Egypt, as they marched through the wilderness in pursuit of the promise. Had they accurately administered their opportunity, they would have attained and gained access to the Promised Land. The Word of God describes the “Promised Land” as a land flowing with milk and honey and oversized fruit. Everything in that land expressed the nature of God and ultimately the abundance of God. They had done everything according to God’s instruction until they had to get ‘all’ of it right. This ‘all’ would have unlocked the promise. The ‘some’ of it would take them to the place of the promise but the ‘all’ would have gained them access to

the promise. Let’s look at some of the things they had executed correctly, and how they gained access to the door of the promise: They believed the Word and this belief activated the existence of the promise inside them. This activation resulted in them following the instruction of their leader. The instruction brought about the direction to the promise. The direction lead to mobilisation. They were now positioned to be able to see the promise. They were so close to it that it was literally in front of them. However, after seeing it, they had to go into the land to possess it. But something went horribly wrong! Instead of gazing upon the promise, they started seeing the obstacles. They returned to Moses and reported: ‘We went into the land where you sent us, and it certainly does flow with milk and honey and this is its fruit.’ It was at this point that doubt set in their “but” became a negation of every possibility and yes, every promise of God. “But the people who live in the land are strong and the cities are fortified and very large. The people of Anak are of great stature and courage.” They had seen the promise, but they had also seen the obstacles that overshadowed the promise. They had found themselves in a position that demanded a decision that would unlock the promise – a decision that would free them completely and utterly. But what was the problem? Was it the stature of the giants? Were the fortified cities the problem or did that veil the real problem?

YOUTH

A NEW PROMISE In the year 2019, we as this generation in Africa have received a promise. This includes the greatest revival of all time that would start at the southern tip of Africa and spread all throughout Africa. These revival fires would break out throughout the continent of Africa and awaken the entire world. What does this mean for us? It implies that Africa will become the catalyst for change to the world and the example of leadership to the world. Just for a moment, can you imagine that? Sons and daughters from all over Africa impacting all of the mountains of influence in the world. From finance to politics; politics to business; business to leadership. Sons and daughters of Africa would take centre stage in the greatest outpouring of God’s revival fire.

YOUR OUTLOOK IS THE CHALLENGE In the Old Testament, ten spies were sent to see the Promised Land but the majority (eight out of the ten), upon return, provided a negative account, based on their perspectives. They were trapped by what they perceived and were led to believe that they were inferior. I believe that if we do not “put off the old man,” and the pessimistic thinking, we will not inherit the Kingdom and unlock the promises of God. Only Joshua and Caleb (the minority) had seen the possibility of laying hold of the promise. What the eight actually saw were giants ploughing. Were the giants the problem? Did they really even see giants? Or was it their inability to see themselves through the lens of God and His promise for them? I am fully persuaded that this is Africa’s time and it is time for the sons and daughters to arise to prominence in this end-time revival. We have to realise that we need to plough our land because this revival requires us all to change our perspectives. “Since, then, we do not have the excuse of ignorance, everything—and I do mean everything— connected with that old way of life has to go. It’s rotten through and through. Get rid of it! And then take on an entirely new way of life—a God-fashioned

life, a life renewed from the inside and working itself into your conduct as God accurately reproduces His character in you,” (Ephesians 4:22-24, The Message).

DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES? We are at the threshold of entering into the Promised Land but do we have what it takes to see it through? The Israelites needed Moses. In many ways, Jesus is our New Testament Moses. He is our liberator, our Saviour and Sovereign God. It has been said that, ‘we are the best at thinking the worst of ourselves’. We have a tendency to view ourselves through the lens of our weaknesses and deficiencies, as opposed to God’s purposes for our lives. You see, when we tap into exploring the view that God has towards us and His purposes, our lives take on a completely different shape. We then give ourselves permission to live from a higher dimension and a more intentional place. “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery,” (Galatians 5:1).

A PURSUIT OF PURPOSE If we, as a generation, are going to become world changers and be used as agents of change for the Kingdom of God, we have to enter into the pursuit of purpose. Throughout the ages, men and women who pursued purpose often found themselves engaging the world and bringing a message that came directly from Jesus Christ, demonstrating that the pursuit of purpose is the ignition point for great exploits. Why is it so vital to know one’s purpose? And how does this link to becoming a world changer? The simple answer is this – Purpose comes directly from the very heart of God and is often rooted in what you have to give and do for others first. Purpose brings conviction. When we consider how the disciples transformed the world, we begin to see that their conviction became the fuel to their purpose. Conviction made them steadfast, caused them to be committed to the assignment and this assignment changed the world! THE CHRISTIAN LIFESTYLE

CELEBRATING SINGLES

As an older single believer, Denise Padayachee uncovers some of the myths regarding the single life.

MISCONCEPTION 1: IT IS DIFFICULT TO REMAIN PURE. When you are busy with Kingdom things, but more than that, when your affections are set first on Jesus, sexual sin is not even an enticing option. Your gaze, attention and affections are so centred on God that even if the temptation presents itself, it is easy to stay on course. I believe that boredom and roaming affections make it difficult but being fascinated by God makes it easy. When you understand what is really going on in both the natural and spiritual realms, in the fight for purity, you also become empowered to make the right choices and sin is always a choice. I live aware that remaining pure is an act of war whatever season you are in; married or single. The enemy knows that our sexuality it is important in the Kingdom, that’s why promiscuity is glorified in this world and divorce or adultery considered normal. Single people you need to know too that your virginity is very valuable and losing it outside of marriage has way bigger repercussions than this world would have you realise. In all things the truth sets us free and the enemy would rather blind you to it. Fight then to know the truth, because when you do you will be free and empowered to live pure. Remember also that God is a good keeper and if we let Him, He will help to keep us pure. If you can rely on God to give you breakthrough, or to heal your sick loved one, or to provide for your needs, then relying on Him to help you stay pure is as simple. But it does come down to believing, trusting and letting Him guide you. Sin often creeps in when we choose to turn a deaf ear to His voice or silence our own conscience which is a built-in moral compass through which God often guides us. It is easy to remain pure when you listen to the voice of the good keeper.

MISCONCEPTION 2: ALL OLDER SINGLES ARE DESPERATE TO GET MARRIED. I cannot deny that for some older singles this is true, many are desperate to get married, and that for others, this is sometimes true as the moments of heavy discontentment hit. However, for most of the older singles that I know, they don’t live with desperation, they have a pretty good balance of being hopeful for marriage and yet are not “desperate” or “waiting”. Their lives are not on hold, they are living it; taking risks, going on adventures, dreaming of changing the world and doing something about it too. To view us through the lens of the desperation that may mark the twenties would be to miss the beauty and soulful living of an older single who is full of life, fiery passion and purpose. As I began to write this, two single friends and I embarked on a multi-state USA adventure. Desperate? I don’t think so, we are too busy living. 70

MISCONCEPTION 3: AN OLDER SINGLE CHRISTIAN HAS THE GIFT OF CELIBACY OR HAS MISSED THE BOAT. Again, most older singles that I know (and I happen to know many) seem to have healthy enough hormones and desires like everybody else and don’t feel called to a life of celibacy, but those hormones and desires do not control them. As for “missing the boat”, that would be a social construct that is not truth, but a timeline made by man for man. Some marry early in life, some marry later, some remain single. Don’t let the world dictate life for you with its constructs, labels, timelines or definitions. Live with great confidence in the perfect will of a Father who loves you and has good plans for you.

ON PURPOSE

Marriage is the daily decision to love and respect your spouse. By Tamsyn Cornelius

“What’s the secret to a happy marriage?” This is the question I posed to my 89-year-old grandfather who has been married for double my lifetime. He smiled a cheeky grin before he jokingly responded: “The secret is to stay married. You know I have been married for 67 years – to the same woman!” You see, marriage is not all sunshine and roses, and for many it is a great feat to remain committed to the same person for life. Even for the most godly and loving couples, marriage is a work in progress. It is the everyday decision to love, serve and honour your partner. It is time invested. And it will certainly take constant effort to grow and deepen your relationship. Once the initial honeymoon glow loses its lustre, at some point we each will wake up next to our spouse – without butterflies fluttering – and we will have to decide to love them anyway. So, my next question is: ‘Is marriage worth it?’ According to my wise, old grandad – who also happens to be in the longest marriage relationship I have ever encountered – marriage is certainly worth every effort. It is growing old together, sharing life together, raising a family together, and having someone beside you, through the joys and hardships of life. Always. 72

COMMITTED FOR LIFE As a naïve 20-something young woman, I found the man I wanted to marry – or rather, we found one another. Both grounded in the Father’s love and with sound biblical understanding, we knew from the onset that our courtship was intended for marriage. We spoke about it often and we decided upfront that divorce would never be an option. Taking this ‘way out’ completely off the table, we each sighed a sense of relief in knowing that we had a committed partner who planned to be with us until the end. Sadly, in many marriages today, divorce is always a viable choice. Even if it is never verbally communicated, it’s the card we keep in our back pockets for when we need to get out of a toxic relationship or when we ‘fall out of love’ with our spouse. In fact, I’ve heard some jokingly comment: “Don’t worry, this is only my first marriage. I will get it right the next time!” Although said in jest, such statements hint at an underlying truth that divorce has become all too commonplace in society today. This is certainly not the idea of marriage that God intended. If we are to portray the unconditional love of Christ – as one who gave Himself for His bride – then surely our

Pray. Keep your spouse in prayer daily and spend some time praying together as a couple. Pray for your marriage, your family and anything else the Lord places on your heart.

Forgive daily. Do not harbour hurts and disappointments in your marriage. Choose to forgive your spouse every day so that bitterness does not set in.

Compliment your spouse. Choose to speak positive things over your spouse every day and verbalise your thoughts so that they feel encouraged, appreciated and loved. Your words have the power to uplift and bring change.

•

Foster romance. Give and receive affection to strengthen your bond. Remember that physical touch and intimacy are important, even if alone time needs to be scheduled into your diary!

•

Talk often. Set aside time to catch up every day. Open communication is key to a healthy marriage. Connect with your spouse randomly throughout the day – send a text or call just to say hello and check in.

Serve and sacrifice. Sometimes we need to give way on our own plans and ideas to accommodate those of our spouse. A little sacrifice can go a long way to show your commitment and appreciation. Affair-proof your marriage. Don’t put yourself in compromising situations with people of the opposite sex. Avoid sharing intimate details with others who are not your spouse. Affairs can happen long before things become physical, so guard your emotions and heart every day. Be thankful. It’s often hard to see the good when we feel stuck in a rut in our marriages. Keep a gratitude journal and write down all the things you are thankful for – about your spouse and marriage. Focus on the positives and gain a higher perspective based on gratitude.

Marriage the way God intended is a beautiful thing. A God-ordained thing. And when we commit to marriage from the very start, we choose life in abundance with our spouse. Two children later and many memories shared, my husband and I recently celebrated our 10-year wedding anniversary. It has been a beautiful reminder of the promises we once made and continue to live out every single day. Each day I choose to love and honour my spouse – on purpose. Whether you’ve been married for a few months or many decades, you too can choose to love your spouse in practical ways every day.

With a surge of crime and child abductions in South Africa, we can either choose fear or be alert and decide to step into the promises of God. By Tamsyn Cornelius

Safety has become a serious concern for many South Africans. Every day we hear about ‘missing’ children or worse, innocent victims raped and senselessly murdered at the hands of perpetrators. Rumours run rife about child abduction syndicates that are on the rise in some of our major cities. The public is on high alert and no matter where we go – whether to the mall, to a public restroom, or even a family restaurant – the watchful eyes of concerned parents are a reality as families create even tighter security measures to ensure the safety of their loved ones. In these turbulent times, fear can easily grip the heart and mind, and if we don’t have a hold on our emotional state, and a full comprehension of who we are in Christ, we can quickly become paralysed by fear. Even so, the Lord is faithful and reminds us: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand,” (Isaiah 41:10). Step 1: Cover your family in prayer daily. “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us,” (1 John 5:14). Pray over your family every day and rest in the assurance that God hears you and wants the best for you and your loved ones. Step 2: Be mindful and alert. “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour,” (1 Peter 5:8). Do not give the enemy a foothold in your family. Take the necessary precautions and be alert – for yourself, your children, and even other vulnerable individuals in your community. If we all paid more 76

attention to the needs of others, we would help to create a safer community for all. Step 3: Teach your kids safety. Be open with your kids about the dangers that are a reality in society and help them stay safe. Here are a few tips to implement in your own family: Give your kids a code word. Tell them to trust only an adult who knows the word. Do not make your kids’ names visible on clothing or backpacks. Don’t make it easy for potential abductors to call to your child by name. Safety is more important than being polite. Teach your children it’s okay to trust the “uh oh” voice inside them. Sometimes this voice might make a mistake and warn them off harmless adults, but safety is more important than courtesy. Shout for help. Teach your kids to use their voices to get attention and seek help if in distress. Teach them to shout: “Help. This is not my parent” so the situation is not mistaken as a tantrum. Step 4: Be governed by God’s protection Sometimes as parents, we may feel compelled to take extreme measures to protect our children. And yet, the immeasurable love of God far outweighs, outruns, outstretches the love we may feel for our own kids. How much more is the Father’s heart towards us and His longing to lavish our children with His love and protection. Yes, we need to take precautions and remain alert, but we also need to walk in the freedom of Christ who overcomes. “In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world,” (John 16:33).

THE LEAST OF THESE

The Islands is a faith-based historical film shot entirely in Hawaii. The movie is based on the true story of Hawaiian Queen Chiefess Kapiolani who came to faith in Jesus Christ over two hundred years ago. Her conversion made such an impact that it brought Christianity to all of the Hawaiian Islands.

THE ISLANDS

This film is based on the true story of missionary Graham Staines, played by Stephen Baldwin. The film depicts the lives of the Australian missionary and his two young sons, who were killed in India after ministering to a Leper community in 1999. The movie beautifully illustrates the age-old struggle between right and wrong, power and truth, and ultimately love and hate, “Where the quest for truth – writes the story of love.”

From the producers of Courageous, War Room and Fireproof, Overcomer is the new movie to be released by the Kendrick Brothers in 2019. With a stellar line-up of strong female leads, including Priscilla Shirer and Shari Rigby, the movie is set to delve into questions of selfidentity and purpose. It centres around a high school basketball coach who must re-evaluate his career and future and look inward on his own journey of faith and reflection.

SAY NO TO PLASTIC STRAWS The Department of Environmental Affairs is currently in talks with industry bodies to phase out or completely ban single-use plastic products such as straws in South Africa. In a media interview, Mark Gordon, the department’s deputy director-general for chemical and waste management, explained that the single-use products are considered to be unfriendly to the environment and are especially harmful

to the marine sector. Gordon said that the department has also introduced a number of consumer awareness campaigns aimed at encouraging members of the public to avoid using plastic straws. He said while the process unfolds, there has been heightened consumer awareness campaigns that are aimed at encouraging members of the public to refuse the straw.

SA ENTREPRENEURS DEVELOP APPS TO SOLVE PROBLEMS South African entrepreneurs are fast tackling everyday societal problems and developing apps to meet the needs of locals. Information Technology entrepreneur Tshidi Morabi recently developed an app to help parents track their children in real time while being transported to and from school. LocTransie gives parents peace of mind that their children are being safely commuted to their places of learning. Mediation Academy is another organisation which has successfully developed an online tool to help calculate child maintenance in South Africa. The Mediation Academy Maintenance Calculator is an app which produces inputs, which the courts can then consider when issuing maintenance orders. We are pleased to see how local entrepreneurs are rising to the occasion in an effort to solve real challenges. 84

A RETIREMENT TIMEBOMB TICKS IN SA

A recent survey reveals that locals’ expectations of retirement savings do not line up with reality. In fact, nearly half of SA’s workforce is estimated to have no retirement plan, according to a survey done by 10X Investments. The report points out that SA is sitting on a retirement timebomb, with only 6% of the country’s population on track to retire comfortably, according to National Treasury. As a result, running out of money is a stark reality for many, and the likelihood of being able to have enough to sustain retirement is not a likely possibility. The survey found that 46% of respondents began planning for retirement only after becoming established with partners or having children, while just 22% began planning at the beginning of their careers, which is what is recommended.

ASIA’S HOUR FOR THE GOSPEL

ACTOR MARK WAHLBERG SHARES HIS FAITH Mark Wahlberg has enjoyed success as a renowned actor, producer and singer. But long before he made it big in Hollywood, he was headed down a dangerous path. Recently, Mark shared how his faith helped him turn his life around after his troubled youth. As a teen he was convicted of assault and theft, and only after a time in jail, did Mark realise that he needed to turn to God and change his life. “Once I focused on my faith wonderful things started happening for me. And I don’t mean professionally – that’s not what it’s about,” he said… “I want to serve God and to be a good human being and to make up for the mistakes I made and the pain I put people through. That’s what I’m praying for, and I recommend it to anybody.” Mark continues to serve God and is a devoted family man, openly sharing his faith in public forums.

China is expected to hold the world’s largest economy by 2050. In a recent report, Asian Access describes Gospel growth and the momentum they see building throughout Asia. “There’s enormous opportunity out there in some of the most challenging areas of the world.” Asian Access comes alongside local churches to help develop and multiply leaders, as well as transform communities for Christ. Furthermore, ‘ancient walls’ are falling in places where Asian Access has worked for decades, and a new season for the Gospel is underway. “The Church of China is hungry to complete the task of global evangelization…. We pray the ongoing tensions do not hold them back from this robust dream.”

UK FIRMS READY TO MICROCHIP EMPLOYEES UK employees may be next in line to get fitted with microchip implants – a move that’s raising alarm among some critics. According to The Telegraph, several British companies are planning to implant the miniature devices in some of their staff, arguing the move would greatly improve security. Companies suggest that microchipping would make it easier and quicker for staff to perform daily tasks. It could also be used to store medical data. However, not everyone is sold on the idea, with some critics saying it raises serious privacy issues. In addition, many Christians reject microchip implants because of concern that this could be a prelude to “the mark of the Beast” in end times prophecy.

ARE CHRISTIANS STILL BEING PERSECUTED TODAY? If someone were to ask you, how your family is doing, you’d be able to easily answer the question with, “Very well, thanks for asking.” And how about your family in the faith? If someone were to ask you, how your brothers and sisters are doing? Those in Iraq, Nigeria, North Korea or Mexico... What would your answer be? Household of faith As believers and followers of Jesus, we are God’s children and we are part of the household of faith (Gal 6:10). Together with believers from all over the world, we are brothers and sisters in Christ. And as family, we need to be informed of those members who are suffering and experiencing persecution for their faith, even in some of the most remote places in the world. Many Christians today, operate under the assumption that persecution is a part of the Church’s past. But the truth is that approximately 215 million Christian in the Top 50 countries on the Open Doors World Watch List* face severe persecution and restrictions because of their faith. What is persecution? Christian persecution refers to any hostility, experienced from the world, because of one’s identification with Jesus Christ. Persecution can include physical and verbal abuse, imprisonment, kidnappings, bribes, destruction of property, rape, torture and murder. Every day of every year, and on every continent, men and women face persecution because of their belief in Jesus. Open Doors, an international ministry, is at work, strengthening these believers in more than 60 countries worldwide. Why should we care? The Word tells us that we are the Body of Christ, “If one part suffers, every part suffers with it!” (1 Cor. 12:26). As part of the Body of Christ we suffer with our family that is being persecuted. And they need our prayers and support. Open Doors aims to support and strengthen persecuted believers in the world’s most difficult places, enabling them to continue shining Christ’s light in their families and communities. This is done through Bible and Christian literature distribution, training and assistance, providing relief aid and trauma care, raising prayer support and advocating on behalf of the persecuted Church.

“If my people, who are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” Pray: Lord, I come to You with this prayer for our land. You promise that when your people pray, humble themselves, and seek You, that You will hear and answer us. Lord, our land needs healing and I believe it starts with me. I humble myself before You right now. I seek Your face. I ask You to grant me a repentant spirit so I may be an instrument that ushers in your blessing for this nation.

“By me kings reign and rulers issue decrees that are just; by me princes govern, and nobles—all who rule on earth.” Pray: Thank you Lord that no person in leadership over this nation has been appointed by accident. Thank you Lord that you know them by name. We pray that you would speak to them and that you would give them the ears to listen and the hearts to lead well.

1 TIMOTHY 2:1-2: “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.” Pray: Lord we pray for the leaders and rulers of our nation. We pray for every individual in a high position, that you would lead them to repentance and that you would daily guide their directions and decisions regarding the people of South Africa.

PSALMS 33:12: “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord; and the people whom He has chosen for His own inheritance.” Pray: Lord, our nation has turned from you. God, on behalf of myself and my people, I confess our disregard of you. Bring your people to repentance and let this nation once again call you Lord of this land.

PROVERBS 14:34: “Righteousness exalts a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.” Pray: Lord, we pray that you raise up a standard of righteousness in this land. Let it rain down on us and spring up from within every home and community in our nation!
