FELICIA RUMBLE I am a second year Theology student at the University of the Western Cape. I am married and have three children. A scripture that carries me through my studies is, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 122;9-11). This scripture made me realize how faithful God is and how utterly dependent I am on Him. As the saying goes, “great things happen when you stop relying on yourself and start relying on God.”

Hope means hoping even when things seem hopeless ~ Richard Daly The sense of being helpless can be extremely debilitating. Hopelessness is frequently associated with feelings of helplessness and powerlessness, as well as with a desire to separate oneself from other people. It is possible to feel hopeless when faced with financial troubles, marital difficulties, health concerns, and other negative circumstances, all of which can be overwhelming. Most people experience feelings of hopelessness at some point in their lives. It is not restricted to a particular group of people. Even biblical heroes were afflicted by a sense of hopelessness from time to time. In Psalm 34:19, David expresses his belief that many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD delivers him out of all of them. Daniela Beukman, a heroin addict who conquered her addiction, believes that hope has a name: Jesus! You may read Daniela’s story in this issue and be inspired by her determination to overcome a 15-year addiction and begin a new life. As international evangelist Andries Pelser and his wife Deborah Pelser relate their journey of unshakeable faith as they proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ all over the world, your hope will be rekindled and your faith will be strengthened. Paul writes in Romans 5:3-5 that we can rejoice in our afflictions because we are a hopeful people. “And not only

this, but [with joy] let us exult in our sufferings and rejoice in our hardships, knowing that hardship (distress, pressure, trouble) produces patient endurance; and endurance, proven character (spiritual maturity); and proven character, hope and confident assurance [of eternal salvation]. Such hope [in God’s promises] never disappoints us, because God’s love has been abundantly poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us” (Romans 5:3-5 AMP). Many people have found 2021 to be a challenging year in a variety of ways due to the pressure, problems, and pain brought on by the pandemic. The prayer of my heart as you read through this issue is that your hope will be rekindled and your perspective will be shifted, and that you will discover how the pressures of life may help you rediscover hope rather than despair. As a result, our hope rests in God, who has the power to make all things new. Wishing you a prosperous and hopeful 2022! Claudene

Jane (31) from America’s Got Talent, also known as Nightbirde, died after a long battle with cancer. Nightbirde captured audiences around the world with her stunning voice, tenacity, and faith amid pain. In a statement to American media, the family of the singer confirmed the news “with the deepest heartache” adding that “we, her family, are devastated by her passing and unimaginable loss.” The statement added, “those who knew her, enjoyed her larger-than-life personality and sense of humour. She had a witty joke for every occasion – even if the joke was on her. Her lasting legacy will be the gift of hope she gave to so many through her music and the strength she found in Jesus. We thank everyone for their messages of love and support.” For Nightbirde, God met her in her pain, and this message she shared openly and honestly on her personal blog and Instagram account.

This is what she wrote in one of her blog posts: “I am God’s downstairs neighbour, banging on the ceiling with a broomstick. I show up at His door everyday. Sometimes with songs, sometimes with curses. Sometimes apologies, gifts, questions, demands. Sometimes I use my keys under the mat to let myself in. I fear sometimes that when I die and meet with God, that He will say I disappointed Him, or offended Him, or failed Him… But one thing I know for sure is this: He can never say that He did not know me.”

She is known by the following life quote: “You can’t wait until life isn’t hard anymore before you decide to be happy.”

The AGT family wrote: “Your voice, your story, and your message touched millions. Nightbirde will always be a member of the AGT family. Rest In Peace Jane.” She has given others the opportunity to live. Her encouraging words have empowered those in a similar position. Her life had a purpose, and she fulfilled it. PRAYER OF SALVATION The prayer of salvation/ sinner’s prayer is not a magic formula. Its meaning is deeper than reciting mere words. The Bible teaches us in Rom 10:9-10 that “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord’, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the death, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved”. In other words it is an open confession of our belief in the life, death, resurrection and ascension of the Lord Jesus Christ. Moreover this confession is the activity of the heart spilling over through the mouth. This is what the Apostle Paul means when he said “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile” Romans 1:16. Jesus Himself says in Revelation 3:20 “Listen! I am standing and knocking at your door. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in and we will eat together.” Maybe you are paging through this magazine because someone invited you to check it out or you just stumbled upon it as you surfed the internet. I do believe it is not a co-incidence. If something in this publication resonates with your spirit and inspires you do not hesitate to invite Jesus into your world as he knocks on the door of your heart. There is nothing more amazing than to fellowship with the King of kings. Below is an example of a prayer to except Jesus’ invitation to a relationship with God. You can also pray by yourself using your own words. There is no special formula as long as you pray from your heart. Prayer: Dear Lord I believe that you died on the cross for me to save me. You did for me what I could not do for myself. From this day forward, help me to live every day for you and in a way that pleases you. Thank you for not giving up on me when I gave up on myself. Thank you that You know the plans You have for me, to prosper me and not to harm me. Instruct me and teach me in the way that I should go. Counsel me and watch over me. In Jesus Name Amen

“DO WHAT YOU CAN, AND GOD WILL DO WHAT YOU CANNOT!” Andries Bernardus Pelser (59), also known as Tonnie, and his lovely wife Deborah Ann Pelser (54), known as Debbie, were both born and raised in Pretoria. Andries met Deborah during her senior year of high school, and the rest, as he puts it, is “history.” “I was in my senior year of high school when we met, but we did not begin dating until early the next year,” Debbie explains. I immediately recognized Andries as a gentleman and a guy you don’t meet every day, but I was far from considering marriage at the time. My desire of becoming a computer programmer and earning a lot of money remained strong in my mind. I had no idea Andries and I would marry less than two years later.” The Pelsers are married for 34 years and are the parents of two beautiful daughters, both married as well. Alicia-Charnè and her husband Rudi have two daughters (3 and 1 years old); while Chanel and her husband Charles have a one-yearold daughter as well. “In fact, both girls were pregnant concurrently, and their babies were born six days apart. With our daughters, sons-in-law, and granddaughters, we count ourselves truly blessed.” Playing with her pals was Debbie’s favorite pastime as a child; Andries, on the other hand, started selling newspapers, and other stuff, at a young age for pocket money. As children, their parents instilled in them a high degree of integrity and taught them the importance of making wise decisions. Because of their parents’ exemplary lifestyle, their children, grandchildren, staff members, and ministry partners can

learn from them. Despite their academic qualifications, the Pelsers have been called and ordained as Evangelists. As explained by Andries: “As Evangelists, we are called and equipped by God in a unique way to spread the Gospel. When it comes to accomplishing His purposes, God often chooses the most unlikely of candidates. One can see this by looking at the qualifications of His disciples in the Bible. In order to prove that it is not you, but rather God, who is looking for people who are available, he will do the impossible through you.” They are motivated not only by a strong desire to see the Gospel spread through evangelizing, but also by a keen sense of business expertise and experience. More than two decades ago when technology began to play a role in education and training, we came up with this name. I spent several years as the area manager at Lyceum College. God endowed me with the ability to discover business prospects, and at the time, my employer benefited from those efforts. One day, I spoke to a lawyer who described how value is created in a business, and I realized that the gift I have might be used to start my own business. This marked the beginning of a new day.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR COMPANY’S WORKPLACE CULTURE?

ANDRIES Edutel’s culture is predominantly Christian. We make it abundantly and unapologetically clear that we are founded on Christian values and conduct ourselves and our organization accordingly. It is customary to open meetings with a prayer, asking God the Holy Spirit to guide us and assist us in making the best decisions for our business. DEBBIE The word of God says in Matthew 6:33, Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be given unto you. We are firm believers in God prospering His children and turning His favor toward them, which is why our company is founded on Christian principles that prioritize honesty and integrity. Additionally, you will not hear bad language used in the organization; we promote mutual respect and do not allow harsh language. Both my husband (as CEO) and our General Manager, Oscar Bashing (a pastor), adhere to our principles to the letter. We are confident that if we remain in God’s will, we shall enjoy His blessings.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY WAS YOUR GREATEST CHALLENGE IN YOUR JOURNEY AS CEO AND HOW DID YOU OVERCOME IT? 14

People responding to salvation call in Tanzania I believe that one of the most difficult tasks facing any CEO is to surround himself or herself with the right people who share the company’s vision and work to make it a reality. The same holds true for your clients. As a Christian, people often perceive you to be weak because you treat others with love. “Do not mistake my kindness for a sign of weakness,” as someone once said. It is thus crucial to always bear in mind that it is about the organization and not about a specific individual. Therefore, the business must always survive and be profitable at all times. Our business practices have always been guided by Christian principles. We will not participate in any illegal activity.

YOU ARE PASSIONATE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. HOW DO YOU IMPLEMENT THAT PASSION IN ORDER TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE SOCIAL WELFARE OF OUR COUNTRY?

ANDRIES Edutel Holdings (Pty) Ltd consists of four SETA accredited companies and one Private Higher Education Institution. Being involved with SETA has everything to do with skills development and training, and it focuses on the unemployed youth and learnerships to a considerable extent. We’ve taught thousands of

unemployed learners over the years and witnessed a significant increase in full-time employment as a result of the new skills they acquired. We are a level one contributor to Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment and are actively involved in reaching out to the less fortunate through our association with the Johannesburg Dream Center, which is led by my eldest daughter Alicia. The Johannesburg Dream Center assists the poor by providing food, clothing, and training in order to empower them and lift them out of poverty. DEBBIE Apart from my work with our company, which is involved in education and training, as well as the upskilling of the unemployed through learnerships, I am also a director at the Johannesburg Dream Center, which was formed by our eldest daughter, Alicia-Charnè. This charity’s mission is to alleviate poverty by satisfying the urgent needs of the poor through grocery parcels and then empowering them through the provision of skills, resumes, interview skills, and interview attire, as well as inspiring them to work toward a higher quality of life.

NEWBORN MINISTRIES: HANDPICKED TO MAKE AN IMPACT LOCALLY AND GLOBALLY THROUGH EVANGELISM

ANDRIES Edutel is the basis from which we operate our International Ministry. We believe that God created our organization to not only meet our immediate needs, but also to make a difference locally and globally. Our BEE partner, Oscar Bashing, is also a pastor, and our third director, Jolene Pillay, is a born-again Christian with a heart for the less fortunate. We think that God hand-picked this team to assist us in realizing the dreams and desires He put in our hearts. As already mentioned, our ministry is called Newborn Ministries which is an evangelistic ministry focussing on leading people to God. The ministry is modelled after that of the late Pastor Reinhardt Bonnke and was birthed out of a prophetic word we received approximately 17 years ago. A divine invitation came my way to spend a few days with Pastor Bonnke in Florida, and I then travelled with him to Benin, where hundreds of thousands of people had gathered on an open piece of ground to hear the Gospel message. Thousands of people were saved, and amazing signs and wonders took place. Daniel Kolenda, the current president of Christ for All Nations, was still Pastor Bonnke’s understudy at the time. After returning from this lifechanging event, offers to conduct crusades and power conferences in various regions of the world began arriving via email in a supernatural manner. At one point, we travelled to seven different nations every year, holding open-air crusades in the nights and power conferences in the mornings to equip church leaders in proclaiming the Good News and developing leadership abilities. We have organized over 150 such open-air events and conferences to date, which are sometimes attended by dignitaries such as members of parliament. We have preached to over a million people on the ground and witnessing hundreds of thousands of people saved, new

churches planted, and existing churches grow in membership. We have witnessed the lame walk, the deaf hear, the blind see and many other supernatural signs and wonders. We preach, and God performs the miracles. At one of our crusades in Buwengi, Uganda, God performed such awesome miracles and signs and wonders that the Town Council decided to rename the crusade ground Andries Pelser Play Ground. On most crusades, we’re joined by a group of people, including our camera lady, and numerous speakers who talk at the power conferences. It’s worth noting that once a person has seen God’s hand move during a crusade, it becomes an addiction. We’ve discovered that once individuals participate in these events, they want to participate in them again and again and again. God using ordinary people to do extraordinary things for His Kingdom. Since the beginning of the ministry I have released four publications which includes two books and several tracts and guides. Additionally, God has provided us with a weekly television program that has aired on LTV in Uganda for over a decade and must have touched a large number of people. Several programs have also been broadcast on Isaac TV in the 10/40 nations as well. Every crusade is filmed and broadcast on television. God spoke to Debbie and me about the importance of witnessing several years ago. It is God’s children who bear witness that serve as one of the most powerful vehicles for the spread of the Gospel. God inspired us to create a token with a cross on it and the phrase “I believe, ask me why?” We noted that one of the challenges many of God’s children face is figuring out how to start a conversation about Jesus and how to share their testimony, both of which should come naturally to those who love him. It is much simpler to testify when you are wearing the token because all you have to do is wait for

someone to inquire and then give your testimony. Witnessing Week is being held during Pentecost week to coincide with the vision. Witnessing Week began in 2018 with the participation of churches and pastors from 18 nations. It expanded to 27 nations in 2019 and to more than 50 countries in 2020. Covid-19 restrained our growth in 2021, but we’re all fired up for 2022. Additionally, we held two worldwide Witnessing Week conferences, which drew pastors from diverse countries. This new endeavour, which is inspired by the Holy Spirit, is sending out a powerful testimony, and we are trusting that God will bless it and allow it to grow into a global enterprise. Participants’ testimonies confirm that people were saved, healed, inspired, and delivered. DEBBIE We prayed long and hard before taking the leap of faith to start our own business, promising the Lord that this business would invest in His Kingdom. He had given us prophecies that reinforced our mission to proclaim the Good News to the nations, and He was beginning to open doors in areas we had never imagined visiting. He (the Lord) was also preparing the way by exposing Andries to mass crusades through Reinhardt Bonnke, so that when we began the Ministry, all of the necessary skills were already in place. As Andries aready mentioned, Edutel became the main base from which we operate our Ministry, and God has blessed our business in order to provide the support necessary to conduct the major crusades and projects that we organize nationally and globally. God has also blessed us with a few loyal financial supporters and excellent born-again Christian directors at Edutel who share the vision of sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ to all nations

WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE ARE IMPORTANT QUALITIES OF CHURCH LEADERS AND PASTORS?

ANDRIES You must not fear man but God and be committed to finishing strong. Prov 14:27 reads, “The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, so that one may avoid the snares of death” and Prov 29:25 reads “The fear of man brings a snare, but whoever trusts in and puts his confidence in the Lord will be exalted and safe.“ It is not about how you start the race, but how you finish it! DEBBIE Given that neither my husband nor I received formal training in ministry but received a great deal of instruction from God and seen Him open doors we could never have imagined, I think that everyone who is called will be equipped. All you need to do is spend time in His Word and be willing and ready. Additionally, you must be prepared to serve as an example. For example, we deal with pastors in Africa who believe that one cannot be reborn and continue to consume alcohol. When the Lord instructed my husband to abstain from alcohol, we were perplexed because Jesus had converted water into wine, but once we began our outreaches in Africa and were acquainted with numerous African pastors, we learned why God did not want him to consume any alcohol. If he wishes to influence any pastors in Africa, he must abstain from any traces of alcohol. We also have a great deal to do with the homeless who have turned to alcohol and show up at our open-air crusades. If they believe he, (Andries) drinks, this may inspire them to continue drinking, despite the fact that drinking is what is bringing their demise.

WHAT IS YOUR PROCESS FOR PREPARING A SERMON?

ANDRIES I read extensively and am constantly conducting study on subjects that 16

God places on my heart. Each message is inspired by the Holy Spirit and focuses on how the Word pertains to our life. God sows the seed of the topic or theme in my

heart and the Holy Spirit guides me in writing the message. Debbie is in charge of quality control, as I am Afrikaans speaking. She doublechecks the grammar, yet it frequently happens that while I am on the pulpit, the Holy Spirit guides me in an unexpected way with amazing results. DEBBIE I believe that I am not called to preach but to assist my husband in his calling to proclaim the Good News to the poor and the lost, as well as to serve as an intercessor for the ministry.

CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR OWN SPIRITUAL JOURNEY?

ANDRIES As previously stated, I made my first public commitment to Jesus while attending Sunday school when I was approximately 9 years old. From my earliest days in the church, I was involved as a Sunday School Teacher, leader of the junior and senior church youth organizations, and then as

an elder working in a variety of leadership roles and teaching at our church’s Bible school. I used to be a member of the praise and worship team at the church until recently. My wife and I visited TB Joshua’s ministry approximately 14 years ago and had a supernatural touch of the Holy Spirit as a result of witnessing God at work. We went as a group of South Africans and witnessed for the first time individuals being raised from wheelchairs, deaf people hearing, and incredible signs and wonders unfolding. This occurred early in our ministry’s development, and it had a profound effect on us. We feel that God utilized all of these events to gradually prepare us for the ministry in which we now find ourselves. To Him be all the glory! DEBBIE I don’t recall a specific date (most likely due to a bad memory), but I began performing well academically in high school and recall learning on the bus ride to school while we were writing tests and exams. I also remember praying that God would be with me during the test or exam, and then praying and thanking God for being with me on the bus ride home from school. I believe that during those years, I came very close to God. Many years later, while we were members of an interdenominational cell group, we began receiving prophecies from various individuals who were all saying the same thing. The prophecies were recorded, and when we listened to them years later, it became clear that they were referring to a Ministry to which God had called us. Through one of the prophecies that mentioned Reinhardt Bonnke (whom I knew nothing about), I went on the internet and Googled him and ended up adding my husband to his mailing list because I knew that God would not mention a specific person (whom we knew nothing about) unless there was a purpose for it. The prophecies had spoken of a great calling. Too

By adding my husband to his mailing list, an invitation was sent inviting 50 international evangelists to meet with Reinhardt Bonnke face to face. My husband presented me with the invitation, and I immediately advised him to submit an application. He was hesitant to apply because he had only received prophecies of being called to be an evangelist but had not yet begun evangelizing on a large scale. He had visited Uganda a few times prior to that but had only preached to small groups. However, God began nagging him with the invitation. He decided one morning to call a pastor friend in Uganda and ask if he could possibly organize a small gathering in Uganda to which he could spread the Good News. He intended to call him that morning but never did. That same afternoon, Pastor Jonah from Uganda called and

asked if Andries would be interested in participating in a crusade in Uganda. He immediately recognized and responded positively to God’s hand in all of this. The ball had begun to roll. Arrangements were made and Andries provided the necessary funds, and before we knew it, we were sitting on the Ugandan crusade field. We were simply anticipating a small crowd. Perhaps a couple of hundred, but the field quickly filled up, as did our excitement. God’s word to us was coming to fruition! What happened next could never have been predicted. When my husband took the stage to deliver the message, it was as if the Holy Spirit had taken over. His voice possessed a strength I had never witnessed or heard before, and I recall thinking to myself: Wow! This is my husband, isn’t it? When he spoke, he spoke with authority, and I knew immediately that we were in the

Lord’s will. The rest of the story is history. We had been invited by Reinhardt Bonnke to spend time with him during his two-day face-to-face meeting in Orlando, Florida, USA. An invitation was extended to the 50 evangelists present at this meeting to attend any of Reinhardt’s crusades. Reinhardt Bonnke was inspiring a new generation of evangelists to think larger. My husband accepted the offer and ended up bringing Pastor Jonah, from Uganda, with him. They were shown the ropes of organizing a mass outdoor crusade at the crusade they attended in Nigeria, which drew over 500 000 people. This laid the groundwork for the crusades we conduct. Until Covid-19 put a temporary stop to international crusades, we held outdoor mass crusades in approximately seven countries each year. THE CHRISTIAN LIFESTYLE

WHAT WERE THE IMPLICATIONS OF COVID-19 ON YOUR BUSINESS AND CHURCH?

ANDRIES I’m not sure anyone was unaffected by Covid-19. From a ministry standpoint, Covid-19 compelled us to use the internet to preach the Gospel. We were unable to travel abroad due to border closures and different Covid-19 waves, but now that we are vaccinated, the doors are opening again, and we believe Delegates at Witnessing that we will resume Week praying for different conducting open-air countries of the world events in 2022. At the moment, we are coordinating crusades for 2022 with pastors in Burundi, Uganda, Pakistan, Nepal, and Brazil, and we are trusting God for another International Witnessing Week conference in March or April 2022. DEBBIE On the business side, we were severely impacted during the first five weeks of total lockdown, but we eventually put systems in place that allowed us to do more online and less in the classroom setting. In March 2020, we had just concluded an international Witnessing Week Conference here in Roodepoort at the Maranatha Retreat and Conference Centre, and we were extremely grateful to the Lord that all Pastors from various parts of the world who attended returned home unharmed by Covid-19. Our final candidate departed for Brazil on the evening of 16 March 2020, just days before we entered total lockdown. Due to the closure of South Africa’s borders, as well as the borders of a number of other countries, we were forced to rely on online meetings and messages. As you might imagine, it is simply not the same. We are, however, arranging crusades for 2022, beginning in late February, and trusting God that the borders of South Africa and the countries to which we have been summoned will remain open.

HOW DO YOU JUGGLE YOUR TIME AS A FAMILY MAN, BUSINESS OWNER AND PASTOR?

ANDRIES We were told years ago in a prophetic word that God would create the time and that we must confess that what we are experiencing is supernatural. Many will argue that this is impossible. You cannot conduct business, family, and ministry 18

while being so frequently absent from South Africa. I am convinced that God’s provision of a wife to walk the walk alongside me, as well as business partners to strengthen my hands when I am not in the office, contributes significantly to my ability to manage all three. DEBBIE While it is a little easier now that our children are married and out of the house, arrangements must still be made to ensure that everything runs smoothly at our house and offices. Both of us bring our computers, and in between conferences and crusades, we continue to work on our office work. God stated that He would make the time, and He always does, even if it requires some effort on our part.

DO YOU HAVE ANY WORD OF ADVICE FOR SOMEONE READING YOUR STORY THAT IS CURRENTLY STRUGGLING TO MAKE ENDS MEET?

ANDRIES Those who put their trust in God shall not be disappointed. I believe that if we do what we can, God will do what we cannot. God promises in His word that we will provide and if we trust him, do our part, God will not fail you. DEBBIE Don’t stop tithing no matter how bad your circumstances. Proverbs 3:9-10 says, “Honour the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.” This principle is repeated in Malachi 3:10. We have experienced this principle in our own business – you cannot out give God! God will always make a way where there seems to be no way! 1 Corinthians 9:22 “By all possible means, let us save some”.

Ons God bewys barmhartigheid. Die Here beskerm die eenvoudiges. Ek was in nood, maar Hy het my gered. Nou kan ek weer gerus wees, want die Here was goed vir my. U het my van die dood gered my oë van trane bevry, my voete van struikeling weerhou (Psalm 116:1-8). My naam is Nicolene Mintoor en ek’s gebore and getoë in De Doorns. Die koue hand van die dood het 22

My kind is vir my 'n groot seening en 'n teken van God se reddende krag. Die Here het my uit die diepste donker geruk. Ek moes daai motoris vergewe wat nie eers tekens van berou getoon het die dag van die ongeluk nie. Ek het so baie vrae in my hart gehad maar God het die vrede herstel. Bid en glo dat God 'n waarmaker van Sy woord is. God is wakker agter Sy woord om dit te volbring! Mag God elke leser seen.

By: Claudene Sebolai Philippians 4:6-7 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your request to God and the peace of God which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” Anxiety is the body’s natural defense mechanism against stress. It is a state of fear or worry about what’s to come. Common anxiety signs and symptoms include feeling nervous, restless or tense, having a sense of impending danger, panic or doom, having an increased heart rate, feeling weak or tired, or trouble concentrating or thinking about anything other than the present worry, etc. When in our darkest night and we don’t have peace and we don’t know how or why or when or if. We can ask God for guidance through moments of anxiety and stress. True peace comes when we learn to hold God’s Word up to what worries us. There, we learn we can’t fix ourselves; we can’t protect ourselves. Instead, the Bible tells us we can rest, knowing that Jesus walked into the broken, sad, scary places to rescue us and love us. He is the One who fixes. His is the only protection that matters. Paul gives us a natural response for coming to face with our anxieties, a spiritual petition to something greater. Instead of trying to establish control, we are encouraged to offer our experiences to God. Remember, when the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. This is not an intuitive process, in many ways, petitioning is the exact opposite of establishing control. However, in the process, even if our circumstances do not change, we are offered the gift of peace that transcends all understanding.

PRAYER Father, in the name of Jesus, cast away my anxious heart and anxious and overthinking mind. You are in control of my life and I am safe in the Shadow of Your wings. Your promise to never leave or forsake me still stands and I trust fully in Your ability to keep me in perfect peace. I receive Your offer of peace that transcends all understanding, into my heart and mind. Thank you that I can cast my cares upon You, because You care for me. Thank You for calming my soul. You did not give me a Spirit of fear, but of love, power and a sound mind! Amen. “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. My husband is the quiet one and that is sometimes needed. I, on the other hand, am more confrontational and believe in resolving conflict. That’s one of the areas that we are complimenting each other in.

In 1995 I had to turn around and walk away in shame from my dream to study specifically B.Admin. On 1 December 2021, after three years of study - blood sweat and tears - I can finally say: I’ve made it. One thing that people need to realize is that each one of us run our own race. There is no set period in life to achieve anything. Don’t be fooled by a society who hides behind their own insecurities. Your time is now. Don’t just dream, be it! PASTORAL INTERVIEW

AS THE FATHER HAS SENT ME, I ALSO SEND YOU ... A large number of missionaries engage in acts of community building. The most important responsibility of missionaries is to teach people about Jesus Christ and the great commandment to love God and to love one’s neighbor. In my interview with missionary pastors Stephen and Favor Ikechukwu Esiobu, I learned about their journey, their obstacles, and the joys of being a missionary pastor.

SHARE BRIEFLY ON WHO YOU BOTH ARE, HOW YOU MET AND HOW YOU CAME TO FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST? Pastor Stephen: I came to faith in the year 1997 in High School. I was very stubborn and strong-willed, even though I grew up in a Christian family. Because of my rebelliousness, I almost ended up in prison. Since God showed me mercy by delivering me from that situation, I decided to follow him and never looked back. Pastor Favor: I also grew up in a Christian home. In university I turned my back, although not completely, on the things of God. In 2010, at a youth convention that my brother invited me to, I had a life-changing encounter with the Lord and served Him ever since. 28

HOW DID YOU MEET? We met in church (Chuckles). Pastor Favor: I greeted him politely the first time I saw him, but he simply ignored me, and I resolved never to greet him again. He approached me one day prior to youth service and, to my surprise, I found him relatable. I made the best decision of my life by marrying him. Pastor Stephen: For me, it was love after the first conversation. I was certain she had to be my wife. After much prayer, God enabled us to marry, which was also my best decision.

HOW AND WHY HAVE YOU DECIDED TO BE INVOLVED IN MISSIONS WORK? We have a heart for souls, a desire to see God work in our generation, and joy in our hearts when we witness it. Coming to South Africa was not our plan it was divinely orchestrated. After we got married, the commission we serve under, Grace of God Mission International, under the Leadership of Bishop Dr. Paul C. Nwachukwu, ordained and anointed us for missions. Our commission is known for going for missions to places where the gospel is hard to reach; however, we ended up in Atlantis, South Africa.

WHAT DIFFICULTIES DID LANGUAGE AND CULTURE POSE TO YOUR WORK IN SA? It was initially difficult, particularly with the music, as the sound of music in South Africa is quite different from that of Nigeria. Going out for evangelism and outreaches was also quite challenging, especially when we were new; reaching the unsaved in our community was particularly difficult. Now by God’s mercy and Grace we have learnt to an extent, the sound style and a little bit of Afrikaans, to reach the people properly. In addition, God has blessed with co-laborers within the community who work with us to reach the people.

TELL US ABOUT THE BEGINNING OF YOUR MINISTRY WORK IN SOUTH AFRICA. We started our Missionary work August 2013. We were pregnant with our first baby, we only knew two families here in Cape Town who received us and aided our settling in. They took us to Atlantis and that is where our work in SA started. The beginning of our work was little, heavy and it took a toll on us financially, emotionally and physically. However, God always

showed up when it’s the heaviest. Every challenge became a learning curve and a stepping-stone. We started with outreaches, women and men seminars, street and market evangelism, house and hospital calls, outreach programs for the homeless, GBV victims’ shelter visitation etc. Every second Sunday we did food schemes and then home cells on Wednesdays. All these including the main weekly activities, which is standard for Thursday evening and Sunday morning. Our goal coming to South Africa is Winning Souls and preaching Christ and we rolled up our sleeve and did just that from week one, time and place not minded.

unfortunately, we have to bear the brunt for that as well. Nevertheless, God always finds a way to turn the tables around, and the church continues to grow. We also faced financial challenges, but as the word said in Matthew 6:33, Seek first God’s kingdom and every other thing shall be added, and so it happened and it still happens. This work is solely an evidence of God’s providence.

HOW HAS THE CHUCRH TRANSFORMED FROM WHERE YOU STARTED TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW?

HOW DO YOU GET YOUR CONGREGANTS TO PARTICIPATE IN CHURCH LIFE? DO YOU HAVE SPECIAL MINISTRIES?

We started out in a garage, moved to a classroom, then to a small hall. However, here we faced most of the terrible challenges any foreign missionary could face, from the hall owners. We now occupy a bigger space at the Old Shoprite Centre in Atlantis. We are trusting God, for a land, that will not just hold the church building, but facilities for community development work, especially for the youth.

The various departments in church consists of Men’s Ministries, Women’s Ministries, Youth and Children’s Ministries, etc. From these ministries we reach out to the need of our community. We appointed workers to co-head these outreaches so we can reach more people. As soon as a person is born again and converted, in the foundation classes and spiritual maturity classes we teach the importance of soul winning. Therefore, with this we involve everyone in the work of reaching out to those in need in our community.

WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES YOU FACE IN REACHING YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY? We work amongst Afrikaans speaking people which a very challenging. They are extremely hospitable people, especially if they know you are trustworthy. There is a certain stigma attached to Nigerians and

online more frequently than we were previously, which is one positive outcome of this crisis. Even though strict Covid-19 regulations are in place, people continue to be skeptical of indoor worship. Let the Word of God be your Compass. Avoid following the crowd; instead, develop the ability to be alone at times. (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Finally, pray, without ceasing and pray in the Spirit at all times. That is when you put the enemy to flight!

By Traci Townsend Five Steps to Help You Get Started with Your Fitness and Nutrition Routine

First, remember that action creates change. You have to take action and put in the work to reach your health and fitness goals and that change that you are looking for.

1. KEEP A FOOD JOURNAL This is helpful to actually “see” what you eat daily. You might be surprised at what and how much actually goes in your mouth. This is time for the truth. Write down everything you eat, every bite, lick, and taste.

2. LEARN TO EAT WELL This doesn’t mean taking away the foods you love. It’s actually more about adding more nutritionally dense food. You don’t have to make drastic changes. For example, add more protein. Most of us don’t eat as much protein as we think. And remember the food journal? It will help you understand how much protein you are eating as well as everything else. Also, add more nutrient dense foods to your diet. And I’m 32

talking about the nutrient dense foods that you like. For example, if you don’t like broccoli but love spinach, collard greens, and cauliflower - eat those. Why would you eat foods you don’t like? The best diet is the one that you can live with. Understand that there is no food that is off limits, unless you are allergic or have some other health concern for not eating it. However, there are foods that may help you reach your goal sooner than others and that requires you to make decisions about whether or not a certain food is worth it or not.

3. STAY HYDRATED Much of our body is made up of water - about 55-60%. Also many chemical reactions that occur in our body require water. Larger people need more water than smaller people. Your body requires more water when you are exercising and when the weather is warmer or dryer.

4. WALK AND MOVE YOUR BODY When it comes to movement and physical activities, one of the most accessible and effective activities you can do is walk. You can walk quickly or more slowly. Almost everyone can access walking. But most importantly move your body and do activities that you enjoy - it can be running, yoga, Pilates, strength training, rock climbing - if you enjoy it, then you will do it consistently. Join a fitness community that supports your chosen activity. Keep in mind that regularly engaging in resistance training or strength training has been associated with improvements in some health measures - including a decrease in cardiovascular disease risk factors and a reduction in blood pressure. Work with a coach or personal trainer who can help you learn more about resistance training and create a programme for you. Also, cardiovascular exercise will promote an improvement in your cardiorespiratory fitness.

5. GET ENOUGH SLEEP And finally we really need to get more sleep. Sometimes we neglect our bodies by getting too little sleep. How much sleep is enough? It varies, but aim for 7-9 hours consistently.

So, are you too busy to follow a workout and nutrition routine? It may be a matter of reassessing your time and your priorities. You are important. It’s time to take action and create the change needed to reach your health and fitness goals. The actions don’t need to be huge. In fact, they should be attainable so that you feel success, and that success will boost your motivation. And the more you are motivated, the more actions you will take in order to create more change, which will move you closer to your desired goal. Start today. You are worth it!

DIY TUMERIC FACIAL MASK

You will need * The Yolk of 1egg * 1 Tablespoon of turmeric * 1 Tablespoon of plain yoghurt * 1 Tablespoon of olive oil Method* • Mix all the above on a bowl until well combined. • Please note that this mask is a bit runnier than others. Be sure to wear something comfortable and preferably not new. • Cover the colour of the clothing item you are wearing with some paper towel or tissue for extra caution in case any of the mixture spills. • Ideally, it would be best to use a mask brush for your application but if you do not have a mask brush, using your hands or any big clean puffy make up brush will also do. • Apply the mask all over your face only leaving your lips, eyebrows and eyes bare. • Keep the mask on for 10-15 minutes. Relax while doing it. Cut two cucumber slices to apply to your eyes, apply some lip balm to your lips and enjoy this lovely treat.

MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT INDEPENDENT EDUCATION IN SA

Inequality of opportunity is a common theme in our country today and we believe that the sincere intention of many companies across multiple industries is to contribute to the establishment of equality of opportunity in our society, especially in previously disenfranchised communities. It was this premise upon which John Wesley School was founded by the Pinetown Methodist Church in 1977 when a pre-primary programme for 10 children was started by Lynne Jolliffe, the wife of then Pinetown Methodist Church minister, Reverend Derek Jolliffe, in their garage. This outreach to the community grew rapidly and eventually incorporated 75 children, thus necessitating a move to the church premises, where it continued to expand into a primary school. Since 1987 our school has actively educated and empowered children from disadvantaged communities, going so far as to openly defy the legislation that enforced segregation in education prior to 1990. John Wesley School was officially registered with the Natal Education Department on 2 November 1989. We have continued this established tradition of empowerment and today we boast an enrolment of 664 learners, all of whom are from previously disadvantaged communities. We have succeeded in providing an exceptional standard of education over the years in spite of tightly constrained budgets and corporate sentiment aligned against us. Not all independent schools in South Africa are wealthy, high-income institutions, as perception appears to dictate. John Wesley School is a low-fee independent school. Many schools such as ours have been established over the years as demand has increased exponentially for viable, yet affordable alternatives to 38

the dysfunctional and largely ineffective state schooling system. The majority of our school’s parents are employed in the public sector. They are not wealthy in the conventional sense. They work hard and make sacrifices to keep their children at our school, secure in the knowledge that they are receiving a superior education. John Wesley School is a Non-Profit Organisation and we endeavour to keep our school fees as low as possible each year so that the education we provide is as accessible as possible to children in our immediate community and beyond. We receive no financial

assistance from government and our only source of income is school fees and certain fundraising initiatives in which we engage throughout each year. We have no financial reserves to speak of and after we have covered our essential expenses, such as salaries and key operational costs, there is very little left for infrastructure development of any magnitude. Our school fees are less than R29 000 per annum. Whilst we usually have no inclination to denigrate our state school counterparts, over the years we have observed, with great exasperation, the steady flow of corporate and trust fund capital into the state schooling sector, many of the beneficiaries of which are already a great deal wealthier than us. There are many former Model C state schools whose annual school fees exceed ours, in some cases significantly so. In addition, the government pays the salaries and benefits of a certain quota of their teachers, a privilege that we are denied. Former Model C schools may argue that their school fees are used to enable their governing bodies to employ extra teachers, however, this still does not preclude some of them from generating millions in reserve funds from school fees, which, often augmented by external donations, they utilise to build and develop impressive infrastructure on an ongoing basis. We acknowledge that there are indeed many state schools in need of financial assistance and we appreciate that this has to be the primary focus of the private sector. However, as we have elucidated above, the need is certainly not universal. As is the case in the state education sector, there is a massive disparity in income between many schools in the independent sector and equating our means with schools that levy annual fees ranging from 100% to 700% higher than ours is, as our numerous experiences dictate, a somewhat unfortunate propensity in the private sector. Our fervent wish is that the private sector would recognise the tremendous investment potential that we represent, especially in a

contemporary South African context. In a country in which the vast majority of schools are dysfunctional in some form, one would imagine that an expertly managed, financially viable and highly academic institution, populated exclusively by learners from previously disadvantaged communities, would be a sought after investment destination for organisations that are serious about advancing the prospects of our youth and making a telling contribution to our country’s future. We hope that by presenting our school on various media platforms, as well as in publications with a Christian readership, we may attract the interest of a philanthropist or business owner who may, God willing, want to know more about our school, whose vision and values align with ours and who wishes to form a sustainable partnership with a viable Christian educational institution. John Wesley School represents a success story within the local educational sphere in terms of shaping young lives and giving hope to young people. We want to continue to make a difference in the lives of our South African youth. FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF A TEENAGER

Interview done by: Claudene Sebolai I had a chat with Jaylynn (16), Anethia (16) and Karleigh (13) on the topic of GBV. One might think that young people aren’t interested in or don’t pay attention to intimate partner violence, however, these three were very passionate in their engagement around this issue. WHAT, IN OUR OPINION IS GENDER BASED VIOLENCE?

Karleigh: Gender oppression of any sort which leads to atrocities such as femicide or rape, spree killings involving predominantly one gender, and serial killings amongst others. Jaylynn: GBV is when someone is hurt in any way because of his or her gender or sexual orientation. GBV occurs when there is an unequal balance of power within intimate relationships as well as in society. Anethia: GBV is when someone is oppressed due to gender norms and are coerced by either a partner or a parent or society to fit a specific criterion.

DO YOU THINK INTIMATE PARTNER ABUSE OCCURS AMONGST TEENAGERS?

Karleigh: Yes intimate partner abuse doesn’t only happen to a certain age group. Jaylynn: Yes, definitely! For example, young people might think that name calling in a relationship is normal when in fact it is abusive. Most teenagers do not report these unhealthy behaviors, as they might be afraid to open up to family and friends.

TEENS Anethia: Yes. In some cases teens think that toxic relationships are normal based on what they have been exposed to in society. I think intimate partner abuse is a huge thing amongst teens. Overt and covert forms of GBV should be made clearer to teenagers.

ARE TEENS OPEN ABOUT GENDER BASED VIOLENCE?

Karleigh: Not at all. They might be afraid that their parents or other adults will think of them as a shame or in some cases, adults aren’t always approachable. Some might also find it hard to be honest about what happens to them because they think people don’t take them seriously or try to compare their problems with those of other people. Jaylynn: No, most of the time, teens don’t talk to adults because they are afraid or ashamed. They might even think that no one will believe them. Anethia: Sadly not always. Teens might be afraid to talk about their problems because they think they will be judged or stigmatized if they do so. Sometimes they don’t have a lot of people they can trust to help them.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG PEOPLE EXPERIENCING INTIMATE PARTNER ABUSE?

Karleigh: Run from that situation, even though it might be hard. Tell an adult you trust and feel safe with and try to report it to the police etc. Jaylynn: Open up to your parents or any adult that you trust. Do not be afraid to speak up, it could save you a lot of trauma. Anethia: You are not alone. If you do not have someone to talk to you can always call the GBV helpline on 0800 428 428.

ANY ADVICE FOR PARENTS?

Karleigh: If you see signs of abuse, don’t try to force the subject on your child. Instead, try to talk to them about it when they’re ready. If you have the contact information of the partner/friend’s parents, tell them what’s going on and try to get your child to report it to the police, too, if you can.

Jaylynn: Trust your child and provide a safe space for him/her to open up about intimate partner abuse. Many teenagers turn to self-harm because they aren’t being heard. Anethia: Don’t ask why the child didn’t open up earlier. Sometimes it is not so easy to speak up. It takes a lot of courage to approach someone so do not ignore the child. Teens get emotionally tired and drained too and needs lots of support, love and understanding. Adolescence is an important stage of life. According to the World Health Organization, “Physical, emotional and social changes, including exposure to poverty, abuse, or violence, can make adolescents vulnerable to mental health problems.” Let your teen feel that they are worth listening to. Taking the time to really listen to your teen shows them you respect their thoughts, opinions, and helps build trust.

Of course, there has! Can you name some? How about when you first began to try to tie your own shoes, did you need someone to help you? It was probably your mother, wasn’t it? She worked patiently with you until you were able to do it all by yourself. How about when you got your first bicycle, didn’t your dad run along beside you and hold you up? When you began to learn to read, did you just pick up a book and start reading? Of course not, someone—probably a teacher—helped you learn. Did any of you need any help learning how to play soccer? There are always going to be times when you need a helping hand—even when you are grown!

Father, help us to remember that you are always there when we need a helping hand. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Today’s Bible lesson is about a time when the disciples of Jesus needed a helping hand — one disciple in particular whose name was Simon Peter. It had been a long, hard day for Jesus and his disciples. By: Claudene Sebolai Growth is inevitable. As important as growth is for human development so too is it for spirituality. It is said that Jesus “grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him” (Luke 2:40 NIV). There is so much advice on spiritual growth; however, allow me to share a couple of key things which I believe is foundational and important in our faith walk. Be in constant fellowship with God. Talk to Him and wait for His response. Yes, God too can talk, and He just loves conversation with His children. Include the Lord in all you do, when you on the mountain and when you in a valley. Do it until it becomes second nature to you. Read, read, read! Read your Bible, here you will encounter God’s interaction with His creation. You will see how He loves, protects and provides for His people. Start reading small portions and enjoy getting to know your Creator. You’ll find in the Bible everything for every occasion. Of course you can add other Christian literature to your reading list. Connect to a church family and become a partaker not just a spectator. Your church family can help identify your passion and might have programs to facilitate your growth. Not only that, you study God’s word together and grow spiritually with other believers. Here you will find a support system and do not have to go through life’s journey all by yourself. Spiritual growth is not an overnight thing; it is a life time journey. King David, well advanced in years, wrote Psalm 23 and still articulates his journey of growth with God. Enjoy your journey and commit to the process and grow in grace.

Mercy Begets Mercy

Demonstrating love through actions has a greater impact than speaking love. My initial response was, “Why would Jesus use such a story?” because it seemed unrelated to the initial question about eternal life that was posed to him. The story about an assaulted robbery and someone being left for dead seemed far-fetched as well. Jesus portrays God’s servants as uncaring toward the injured man, refusing to reach out to him in his hour of need. The Samaritan man, on the other hand, is motivated by compassion to see this person assisted and healed. I believe that this story is particularly pertinent as a life lesson. To begin, it is important to study the scriptures; however, it is even more vital to demonstrate love toward broken people in order for them to experience God’s love through God’s disciples. Sometimes showing people how to live through our actions can be more impactful than just being prescriptive and teaching or telling people how to live according to God’s word. Jesus went beyond His call and demonstrated what love should be to the point of death. He is God, He could have just spoken scripture but He demonstrated it as well. Luke was quite effective in stimulating deeper thought by narrating this parable. Its message probes a person to want to change in the heart. It makes one wonder about why the characters responded the way they did and it makes one think regarding eternal life, which was the initial question. It demands the reader to take a specific position, and I am sure no one wants to see themselves as the characters of the two seemingly heartless religious leaders. Nevertheless, how many times are we not those characters? In this story God’s love for the human race and his constant plan to save those in distress, is clearly evident. As taught by Jesus, mercy begets mercy (Matthew 5:7). For me, the story's central theme is love. Love for one's neighbor transcends cultural, racial, ethnic, class, and gender boundaries and entails performing acts of 48

kindness for those we believe do not deserve it. Love is what made the Divine take on the guise of a human servant. Love is what compelled Jesus Christ to take up His cross, and die a gruesome death so that we can live a glorious life. By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, says Jesus, if you have love one to another. Love is not what we say love is what we do. In John 15:12 Jesus’ instruction is “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.” To the Corinthians 16:14 Paul writes, “Do everything in love.” Peter too urges the believers 1 Peter 4:8 “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” According to Paul in 1 Corinthians 13:13: “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. 33 YEARS WITH THE LOVE OF YOUR LIFE IS QUITE AN ACHIEVEMENT. HOW AND WHERE DID YOU MEET? Cathy: We met at youth. Aron was one of the youth group’s leaders. I accompanied a friend to youth that day. I initially ignored him, but as time passed, I became acquainted with Aron and we became friends before we became a couple. As the 50

saying goes: “The best relationships starts off as friendships first.”

WAS IT LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT OR FIRST FIGHT? Cathy: Probably first fight definitely not first sight. I honestly did not have an interest in him. I fell in love with his personality when I got to know him. Aron: I fell in love with her smile and her eyes. So you could say it was love at first sight.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE FAMILY AND MINISTRY LIFE? We try to always put our family before ministry. We didn’t always get it right. It is easier now, since our children are grown up.

EVEN THOUGH THE BALANCE IS THERE, SURELY THERE MUST

BE TIMES OF CONTROVERSY. HOW DO YOU RESOLVE MARITAL CONFLICT? Indeed, there are times of controversy. We have a working system that we adopted during times of conflict. We would split up family and ministry responsibilities so that each one can have something to focus on. We also do pre-marital and family counselling, which helps us in return. Each counseling session with other couples teaches us something new. So, after 3 years, the best advice we still follow is “Kom ons praat!” (Let’s talk).

MONEY IS OFTEN REFERRED TO AS A MARRIAGE KILLER. HOW SHOULD FINANCES BE HANDLED IN MARRIAGE? We believe in team work, at all times,

even when making decisions concerning money and how to spend it. Unity commands a blessing! We do not operate with separate bank accounts and are always transparent with our finances. This principle helped us start a great journey with resolving conflict concerning our finances. We discuss everything that impacts our finances, e.g. tithing, giving, pledges, assisting family, spending, etc. and we choose the best option for us. We refuse to let money become our battle ground.

WHAT IS YOUR SECRET TO LONGEVITY IN MARRIAGE? We vowed to stay together till death do us part. We try to keep to this vow. It is not easy and sometimes we too feel like giving up, but keeping to our commitment to each other and to God has kept us together. We try to remember to fight the issue (at hand) and not the person. We try to remember what attracted us to each other initially. Marriage is a daily decision to honor your commitment to the individual with whom you have entered into a covenant.

ANY WORD OF ADVICE FOR NEWLYWEDS? Both of you must work together to keep the flame of love burning. Remember your premarital counseling notes, recommendations, and other materials as often as you need to for guidance. If and when help is required, seek it. Respect and love one another for who you are and for appreciate your differences. Always remember what attracted you to your partner. Do not forget a family that prays together stays together. Be each other’s best friend.

AGAIN “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

THE POISONOUS GRIP OF ADDICTION For 15 years, I was hooked on Heroin. 3 years after I had stopped using, I relapsed. For the sake of sustaining my habit, I resorted to begging at the robots in Cape Town. It began with me abdicating my responsibilities and failing to be accountable; I had no one to check me. To my astonishment, I discovered that sobriety is a state of constant decision-making regarding whether or not to pick up. During my sober years, I witnessed God’s goodness; however, addiction’s poisonous grip drew me back into a life of humiliation and embarrassment.

FROM RICHES TO RAGS Prior to my relapse, my husband and I coowned a business and owned a home. We also owned a car and things were going very well for us. Six months elapsed between the time we lost everything and ended up on the street again. As part of our addiction, we stood at the robots in Milnerton and slept in a field behind Summer Greens. Addiction put me in places I never wanted to go and kept me longer than I wanted to 52

stay doing things I never wanted to do. But before that happened, I informed my mother and asked her to watch over Alex (our daughter). They took Alex and “wrote us off”. I felt completely helpless and hopeless. Today, I am responsible for taking care of my mother, who is a pensioner and has had a particularly rough time during Covid-19.

THE LATTER GLORY OF THIS HOUSE SHALL BE GREATER THAN THE FORMER No one had any hope for me, a homeless heroin addict. That’s when Jesus walked into my mess, and made me a messenger of hope. I decided to return to Hope Again Wellness Center. This time I was determined to become the woman God has created me to be. I am a firm believer that Jesus can step into the most hopeless circumstance and turn it around for His glory. What the enemy meant for my harm God turned it around for my good. My journey had a purpose, and Jesus used it to accomplish that purpose. As Paul exhorts the Romans “And we know [with great confidence] that God [who is deeply

concerned about us] causes all things to work together [as a plan] for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to His plan and purpose” (Romans 8:28 AMP). I learned that hope has a name and that name is Jesus Christ. Because of His sacrifice, we can enjoy life in abundance. I’m still at Hope Again Wellness Center where I now work as a marketing coordinator. I am also assisting with the the intake procedure, administration, and inquiries, and I am a counselor. Because I didn’t give up, I’ve been blessed with a life I could never have dreamed or imagined. Every day, I strive to put my rehabilitation first while also assisting others in doing the same. Many people feel that once you leave rehab, you’ll be back to your old self. Big MISTAKE! In rehab, you were trained for “fighting” on the battlefield in a realistic environment. Outside of recovery, you’ll have to figure out how to live on your own. It doesn’t get any easier, but you do get stronger in the process. Make the most of the opportunity to attend rehab if you can. Allow God to work His healing in the places where you’re still bleeding. Learn. Keep an open mind and be receptive to the resources that will help you survive. You will be challenged. You will be tempted. You will be misunderstood. Nevertheless, in all of these things YOU alone must make the decision to overcome and be victorious, or to pick up and go around the same mountain repeatedly. I am now sober and can’t imagine facing life any other way. My story is a story of hope, of support and of recovery. There is a way out of addiction!

I LEARNED THAT HOPE HAS A NAME AND THAT NAME IS JESUS CHRIST.

These two scriptures are the crucial call of all believers. We carry a mandate, to disciple all nations into the family of God. In addition, God is calling us back to a place of worship and service, for a visible miraculous existence, and for the advancement of His kingdom on earth. As a Christian fashioned after the IMAGE AND LIKENESS OF CHRIST OUR LORD, through whom all things were made, and without Him nothing was made that was made, we must;

BE FRUITFUL (COLOSSIANS 1:10) Fruitful not just in natural reproduction, but also in a supernatural reproduction. As soon as you become a Christian, which means being born again, fruitfulness, in every good work, is expected. This means at home, work, in your street at your place of worship, in your ministry or area of service in God’s vineyard and Kingdom, good fruits are expected of the good works of your hand. I pray for everyone reading this, that wherever the devil has oppressed the works of your hand to unfruitfulness, I bind that satanic oppression now, in the name of Jesus Christ, and I loose you into your fruitfulness this year and even until we meet our Saviour. In Jesus name, Amen.

AND MULTIPLY (JOHN 15:1-2) Because of the quick work of righteousness our Father in Heaven is set to do in these last days, the good fruits we bear are supernaturally worked on to multiply and increase. Stagnation is not an option in the IMAGE AND LIKENESS OF CHRIST! Christ multiplied in all facets of life, ALL. Even money comes in his command, whichever form it wants to even from the mouth of a fish. Oh Child of God, I decree again, every siege of stagnation and delay over your life is broken and destroyed NOW in Jesus name. Amen.

SUBDUE AND RULE THE EARTH (REVELATION 1:5-6) We have not been called out of sin and death to cower to one side of the world in obscurity, hiding our identity, NO! We have been called to be rulers, kings and priests unto God, to teach the word, the manifold wisdom of God! Every place you find yourself, you are there on a mission and with a strong mandate. Beloved in Christ, ARE YOU WASHED BY THE BLOOD OF THE CHRIST? ARE YOU BORN AGAIN? ARE YOU A CHRISTIAN? If your answer to these questions is YES, then you are on a call to be kings and priests unto God, you do not need to have a pulpit, a priestly robe or title to have this mandate. Please read 1 Peter 2:9; Ephesians 2:6-7; Daniel 4:17. Child of God, what is challenging your priesthood and kingship? Is it Fear, Disappointments, Hardships, Spiritual Slumber and Fatigue, Ancestral Cycles, Demonic oppressions and curses? Today by this Knowledge of God you have received, I set you free into your season of Kingdom Dominion in Jesus name Amen.

FILL THE EARTH BY MAKING DISCIPLES FOR CHRIST (MATTHEW 28:19-20) We are accountable to God for our life, multiplying and filling the earth and advancing the kingdom of God on earth. The question the Holy Spirit is asking is “How far have you gone, seeing that the time for the return of the King is upon us?” Listen while we wait around, in distractions, chasing after the shadow, crossing our feet inside our tall buildings and auditoriums and taking one title or the other, fighting each other in backbiting and gossiping. The devil is busy luring people to everlasting damnation and ruining life. Let us fold our sleeves and fish for Jesus! Let us do so in the might of our God. The hour has come to serve the Lord in Spirit and Truth. Be unapologetic in your mandate and refuse to compromise. Separate yourself from anything and anyone that distracts you and delays your journey. Shalom.

We are delighted to speak with Dr. (h.c.) Yolanda Petersen of Beget SPMS as she shares her journey from humble origins to become a woman of influence and inspiration who is now a contributing member of our country’s economy. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF. HOW AND WHERE DID YOU GROW UP? First and foremost I am a daughter of the Most High God. I am a mother of an adorable 7-year-old girl, Grace. She truly is my “Grace-Gift” from above! I have always had a love for people, I find that I connect easily and networking is second nature. I genuinely care for people, especially the girl-child and our youth (be it 58

boy or girl). I grew up on the Cape Flats, Mitchell’s Plain to be exact. I had a very safe and sheltered life with solid Christian values and roots. My siblings and I weren’t necessarily spoilt but my parents ensured that we had what we needed plus some. I am grateful to my parents for the sacrifices they have made to care for and educate us. I have two younger brothers, Mark and Nathan.

WHAT IS YOUR FIRST CHILDHOOD MEMORY? My first childhood memory was going into our bathroom (the lever to the roof was positioned there) and my dad acting as “Father Christmas”, crawling out from a hole in the roof. My brother Mark and I were in awe (Nathan was not born yet). Of course we had our milk and cookies out. My mom had us bake and the excitement around Father Christmas visiting later

that evening with our presents kept us excited for weeks. When I grew up and the Father Christmas idea was dashed, I realised the immense effort my parents went through to keep the innocent child-like magic alive. I am grateful to them, and now I follow on with that tradition with my own little one. (Though I do not crawl from a hole in the bathroom on Christmas Eve). Needless to say, she loves Christmas and everything that goes with the festivities.

Throughout high-school, my dad drilled the following into us, always saying that “You’re a Leader and not a follower”, this struck a deep cord and it has been imprinted in my mind throughout my adult life. My mom encouraged the love of God and the importance of having Jesus Christ at my side in everything I do. Her words were: “My kind, wandel met die Here”. I never truly appreciated her advice, living a fast-paced life and experiencing so much abroad and outside of South Africa. In my now mature adult walk, I would not want it any

With a Bang!! I spent many months (possibly even years) seeking God’s guidance on where, how, what my next business would be that has GOD’s stamp of approval, GOD’s strategy for my life as it relates to business. For HIS glory! I waited and waited. I waited a LONG time to hear from God. I kept in faith and obedience to his divine timing. I remember coming out of my prayer time and I had the company name, logo, font type, colours and slogan all in one instant second. I knew I could not hold off until the morning and I called my graphic designer and explained my “vision” to him. He alluded that he felt led by the spirit too and he literally work through the night to bring to life the brand that is now [BEGET], two days later I had a website! Whilst applying for a PTY (Ltd) and Business bank account which took a day and a half to be FULLY set-up! Divine speed. It was incredible how easy and light the yolk is when Jesus takes the wheel. On day 4 – I had a fully-fledged legit and compliant business. The following Wednesday, I landed my first piece of business – a project in the Mining Sector. We beget after our own kind, a human being begets human babies, a dog begets puppies, a cat begets kittens (you’re catching my drift here) and [BEGET] SPMS begets Success! Which also happens to be my slogan.

WHERE YOU LOCATED ARE AND WHAT SERVICES DO YOU OFFER? I do not have a physical office and doubt I’d ever go that route given the current “new-way-of-working”. But I do have structure. Mostly I connect with my team over zoom and our daily check-ins and targets are tallied over whatsapp. Daily and weekly reporting cycles via email and our shared drive. Clarke University advises students to develop a specific set of competencies in order to develop an internal framework conducive to success. I will briefly discuss a few of the skills necessary to succeed in high school, college, or university. TIME MANAGEMENT Time management requires students to create and test a weekly schedule based on the events that occur during the week in order to assess and evaluate whether they use their time appropriately for each event.

STUDY SKILLS Another critical skill is determining the most effective method of study for you. High school and college education require quite different study approaches. It is critical to discover what works for you. You might begin by conducting research on various study methods and selecting the one that is most appropriate for you.

PROBLEM-SOLVING This is a necessary skill at any level of education. The capacity to handle obstacles and come up with innovative yet practical solutions could make all the difference. Students must be able to handle a problem calmly and rationally in all facets of their lives, not just in school.

Being responsible is a critical characteristic that all students must possess. It demonstrates that they can be relied upon to carry out instructions without fail.

CREATIVITY Creativity is not only a worthwhile educational pursuit; it is also critical for professional success. This trait is mostly for the development of other tertiary education-related talents, such as communication, problem-solving, teamwork, and social skills. Being creative can result in the invention of "out of the box" solutions to issues, allowing for the disregard of conventional rules and the discovery of innovative solutions. This ability can be acquired through challenging perceptions and researching alternate explanations. The never-ending list of attributes and characteristics necessary for success in education and life in general can be overwhelming and intimidating, but self-evaluation can be a good place to start to determine if you are on the right track.

HUMAN RIGHTS DAY

By: Tammy Lendore The national holiday is dedicated to commemorate the memory of those who defied and protested against the system of Apartheid and racism in South Africa. On 21 March the communities of Sharpeville and Langa townships embarked on a march to protest Pass Laws. The police shot and killed 69 protestors, many of whom were fleeing, in what became known as the Sharpeville Massacre. News of the Massacre filled the international media space and exposed Apartheid for what it was, an unequivocal violation of human rights. The day also celebrates the progress made towards the recognition of human rights in South Africa and all newly established freedoms such as our Constitution, which has been hailed as one of the most progressive in the world and is the ultimate protector of our human rights. These rights include Equality, Human dignity, Freedom of movement, the right to Life and the right to Language and Culture. The purpose of the holiday is to teach us to celebrate, embrace, respect and appreciate our country’s vast and diverse culture, faiths, beliefs and religions. For most of 2020 and 2021 a number of our human rights and freedoms which we have enjoyed have been curtailed due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. The celebrations, concerts, theatres and other spaces for education and entertainment have been closed to prevent social 64

gatherings of large numbers of people in efforts to limit the spread of the virus. Now is the opportune time to reflect on these rights, which people have sacrificed their lives for and which we have enjoyed since the advent of democracy. Now is the time for conversations on how to protect these rights given the circumstance of the Global Pandemic. Now is the time to interrogate whether the ‘new normal’ which has infringed on our constitutionally entrenched rights is our acceptable way forward if we are to survive and thrive during and beyond the Pandemic. Our most fundamental human right as Christians is to love and be loved. When Jesus was questioned about the greatest commandment, he stated that the greatest commandment is to love God, one's self, and one's neighbour. Thus, love is the bedrock upon which we should live and represent God. This requires right humans. Humans who do not simply read the word of God but fully embody it. Only then will we be able to contribute positively to our country's social cohesion. Right humans will respect another's human dignity regardless of race, ethnic origin, or social class, amongst others. Right humans are those who recognize and respect the divine image in others. While we observe human rights day, let us strive to be right human beings to one another.

Many people have suffered enormous losses since the announcement of COVID-19 and the restrictions imposed on the world. Not only has the pandemic had a direct impact on people’s livelihoods, but it has also had a major influence on mental health issues. According to research, music can be used to process emotions, trauma, and grief. Music can also be used to calm or relax people who are anxious or have a hard time controlling their emotions. Instead of our normal “Local is Lekker” I have decided to post the lyrics of the song sung by Lauren Daigle – Peace Be Still. This song is a perfect complement to the article on mental health. It’s in the stillness and calm of our hearts that we get to know who God really is and understand His instruction thousands of years ago to “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10, NKJV).

By: Ps Favor Ogochukwu Ikechukwu Esiobu The meaning of Easter is Jesus Christ’s victory over death. His resurrection symbolizes the eternal life that is granted to all who believe in Him. However, Easter did not always symbolize Christ’s resurrection. The feast day of Easter was originally a pagan celebration of renewal and rebirth. Celebrated in the early spring, it honored the pagan Saxon goddess Eastre. When the early missionaries converted the Saxons to Christianity, the holiday, since it fell around the same time as the traditional memorial of Christ’s resurrection from the dead, was merged with the pagan celebration, and became known as Easter. Personally, the most outstanding significance of Easter, is what the bible revealed to us in Colossians 2:6-15, “And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him.... He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross. In this way, He disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross. With this scripture, I became fully aware and awakened to these powerful significant truth of the finished work of Christ on the Cross

The acceptance and continuous following of Christ, roots us in Divinity and fills us to overflowing. When something begins to overflow it can’t be resisted or ignored, the original design of God at work in your life begins to be noticed by all, which results to Thanksgiving. We are made complete in him, firstly we become rooted and then we built to completeness, to a realm where we are not bound or captured by empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ. (Vs. 8). He cancels every debt, every ordinances, every accusations the devil and his agents might have against us for the life we may have lived in the past, not minding how messy it might have been. The word of God says “ ...he cancelled the record of the charges made against us...” Halleluiah!! This means if he can remove you from addiction to tobacco he can cure the lung cancer and heart diseases that comes from your years of smoking...and that applies to every other detriments and regrets that comes with living in sin. Old things really passes away. (2 Cor. 5:17). And then he disgraced our accusers, he made a shame of

the devil, a public spectacle of him by his VICTORY ON THE CROSS. Therefore beloved in Christ, let us celebrate the finished work of Christ, our being rooted in Divinity, the completeness and wholeness in him, and the cancellation of every charges the devil thinks he can hold against us , stripping him of every powers and making a public spectacle of him by his victory on the Cross. Not just with Easter eggs, Hot cross buns, or fish dishes. But overflowing gratitude. Because, Christ has finished every work on Calvary’s tree. Amen!

‘HAPPILY MARRIED’ MUSIC MINISTER FATALLY SHOOTS WIFE, ADULT SON AND DAUGHTER 57-year-old William Broyles shot and killed his wife, son and daughter in their Callahan home. Hodges Boulevard Presbyterian Church wrote that Broyles has been its church musician for 23 years, holds a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial engineering and has worked in the aerospace and medical device industries. "When he was asked why he didn't just shoot himself, he said he was too scared to do that," Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper said about William Conway Broyles. Deputies say that there is no history of domestic related issues with the household. "It doesn't make sense when you look at the whole circumstances of why we believe it happened," said Leeper. He described the incident as being very unexpected and that the motive for the shooting is still under investigation.

NICK CANNON MOURNS DEATH OF HIS 5-MONTH-OLD SON

Nick Cannon is mourning the loss of his youngest son, Zen, whom he welcomed with Alyssa Scott just five months ago. The comedian, who is also the father of six other children, disclosed that his infant son died following a fight with brain cancer. "I got so much to talk about," he said on The Nick Cannon Show on Tuesday, 11th of December 2021. "I haven't even shared this with anybody. Not even the crew. Just because there is so much going on in the world. I had a tough, very tough weekend." The star said he spent the "most quality time" he could with his son over the weekend, before holding him "for the last time" on Sunday. "This is a beautiful show dedicated to my son," he told the audience. "You never know what someone is going through. Hug your family. Kiss somebody. Tell them you love them." 70

'I REBUKE YOU CORONA': NEPALESE PASTOR GIVEN 2-YEAR JAIL SENTENCE FOR PRAYING FOR HEALING FROM COVID A Christian pastor in Nepal was convicted of violating the country's anti-conversion law after he prayed for healing from COVID-19. The pastor was first arrested on March 23 after a YouTube video of him praying went viral. In the recording, Pastor Acharya prayed before his congregation, "Hey, corona – you go and die. May all your deeds be destroyed by the power of the Lord Jesus. I rebuke you, corona, in the name of Lord Jesus Christ. By the power or the ruler of this Creation, I rebuke you… By the power in the name of Lord Jesus Christ, corona, go away and die." He was released on bail one month after his arrest but was swiftly detained again by authorities, despite not having a warrant.

MISS WHEELCHAIR SOUTH AFRICA 2021 The 25- year- old Tamelyn Geneview Bock from Springbok in the Northern Cape has been crowned Miss Wheelchair South Africa 2021. A gala event was held at Artscape in the Mother City last night. Her first princess is 20-year-old Nokuthula Yonke from the Western Cape, and 24-yearold Maureen Galaletsang Mokgele from

Taung in the NorthWest, her second princess. The newly crowned Miss Wheelchair SA will represent the country in Mexico in October next year during the Miss Wheelchair World pageant.

MISS SA: “COURAGE OVER COMFORT” Miss South Africa, Lalela Mswane, represented the country at the 70th Miss Universe pageant in Israel, despite the government’s opposition to her participation. Mswane, 24, won secondrunner-up against contestants from 80 other countries. She captured the attention of the audience and judges with her final speech, in which she urged young women to choose courage over comfort. Mswane had this to say regarding her decision: “It is with so much gratitude that I prepare to represent my beautiful South Africa at the 70th Miss Universe competition. Being Miss South Africa is not only an honour but also a huge responsibility and I am determined to serve our country proudly in the best way that I can. Beyond being granted a national platform during my reign to

have a wider reach when tackling the economic and social issues which I have committed myself to, the title also comes with the opportunity to represent our country on an international platform along with women from all walks of life, all coming together to affect positive change in the causes they are passionate about and advocate for. I stand today as an empowered woman because of so many before me who fought for our voices to be heard. President Cyril Ramaphosa has signed the Cybercrimes Bill into law, with parts of the bill now set to take effect from 1 December 2021. The proclamation comes after Ramaphosa signed the Cybercrimes Act into law at the start of June. The Cybercrimes Act defines three types of harmful messages that have been criminalised in South Africa. They are messages which: • Incite damage to property or violence. • Threaten people with damage to property or violence. • Unlawfully contain an intimate image In addition to criminalising certain harmful messages, the Act also includes definitions for cyber fraud, forgery, extortion, and theft of incorporeal property. A person convicted of an offence under the Cybercrimes Act is liable to a fine or imprisonment for a period of up to fifteen years or to both a fine and such imprisonment as may be ordered in terms of the offence. “I hope that this Act will contribute to the reduction of Cyber Bullying in Schools” (Victricia Vivi Beukman: FB).
