Where were you educated?

I grew up in Germany, went to high school and college in Hanover, and finished my studies before I moved to India. I studied languages. My main three were German, English and French.

What are your favourite childhood memories?

I remember when I was in school, there was this big cherry tree on the way home, located in someone's garden. My friends and I had been planning for weeks to climb up and steal some cherries. At that age, this was the biggest crime we could commit. When we finally did it, we got caught by the owners and had to run away. All day we were scared the police would come and take us all away. It's a very sweet memory.

When did you know you wanted to become an actress/model? From a very early age. Maybe I was about 10 when I knew I wanted to be an actress.

What was your first modelling assignment, and how was the experience? My very first TVC was C&A, one of the biggest clothing brands in Germany. I was thrilled as it's very rare to be booked after your first-ever audition.

When and how did you get into acting?

End 2017-2018 I got into acting. I was learning to dance but working on my acting for a long time before that. I was working on my Hindi and Urdu, and simultaneously on my acting. So when I'd auditioned, they liked me, and I would be called back. Finally, I got my first project.

Best thing about being an actress?

To be so many different people while I am Elnaaz. It has always fascinated me to know the psyche of people. I've read lots of books about psychology because of the same reason. I love to understand why people do what they do!

..And the hardest?

To put yourself in a character's shoes: it's what I love most - and the hardest about acting. How do you portray a character that has a horrible relationship with her father and show the consequences when you've had the best father-daughter relationship in real life? All of this has a lot to do with research and knowledge about people.

Who inspires you in your acting career?

Meryl Streep: I love her. Everything she does, the way she is, the way she acts! The way she got rejected time and again but never gave up. I always want to be myself, but I wouldn't mind being like her.

How did you get selected for Sacred Games?

Like how anyone gets selected. I auditioned and was liked by the producers and directors.

How was the "Sacred Games" experience?

The best experience one can imagine. I got to work with three fabulous directors on one project. What else does one want in life? And that too was my first project in Mumbai. I'm super grateful.

17

What special preparations did you do for your role in Sacred Games?

I didn't have to do any special preparations as such other than work more on my language. I'd decided I wanted to dub my voice and I wasn't sure if it was going to be possible as foreigners usually get dubbed. So I kept working on the language, and I ended up dubbing in Hindi and English myself. I see that as a huge achievement.

What was the most difficult part of your role in Sacred Games?

I think the most annoying part was the fake nose that we had to put on for Jamila's role. It was very uncomfortable because it's right on your nose and makes breathing tough.

What do you consider to be your most significant achievement so far?

The fact I worked hard on my language and got to dub my voice in a foreign language in my first project.

Three things that make you happy?

Being around loved ones, travelling to new places and being appreciated for my work

Do you have any tricks or routines to stay healthy and beautiful? Workout, drink tons of water and be happy.

And the funniest thing that happened to you on the Sacred Games set? 18

Whenever I would come on set as Zoya (without the big nose) Nawaz Sir would always tease me saying "Oh, today you got the nose on!" And I would always get super conscious thinking my nose is naturally as big as Jamila's. He was joking, but we always had a good laugh.

What do you like to do away from acting? I like to read and travel.

Which Bollywood actor are you keen to work with and why?

I would love to work with Amir Khan. He is a fabulous actor and does the kind of work that I love. Also, Imran Khan, his acting is a delight.

The hardest scene you've ever filmed?

The downing scene from my series Abhay on Zee 5. I never knew it could be this tough to film a drowning scene. Even though the team was fabulous and made sure I was comfortable and never reached the limits, it wasn't easy.

Name your dream role you'd like to do one day? Playing a schizophrenic.

What are your upcoming projects?

I have three films coming up this year. All yet to be announced.

NINA RUNSDORF PRESENTS A SENTIMENTAL AND MEANINGFUL EID GIFT

46

TREE OF LIFE BRACELET www.theciin.com

Back in January 2020, Nina Runsdorf had started working on a new collection called Tree of Life. The normal start of the year for the fine jewelry designer. Anchored around exceptional turquoise and rich brown Tree Opals, bold Yahwah Opals were interspersed with paraiba, brown and icy diamonds, then set in warm and sensual rose gold to create a unique, “never too precious to wear” collection. The collection also mark the 15th Anniversary of Nina Runsdorf this past November. From inception, Runsdorf always meant to link the collection to charity. While fires were raging in California and devastating climate related events were becoming more common around the world, the designer and her team felt they couldn’t work on a collection celebrating trees without considering our environment. After a few weeks of research, they found a match with the Environmental Justice Foundation, or EJF for short. Nina was happy to find a certified supplier who uses recycled 14 karat gold to make the bracelet, while the beads she chose to adorn the piece are all vintage finds she has collected over the years. “This means the world to me; I think the most important thing is to protect our planet and our people.” Says Nina Runsdorf. When asked how long the bracelet would be on sale, Nina added: “We will always have the bracelet, it’s now a permanent part of our collection. This is just the beginning: look out for new versions year on year.” – Nina Runsdorf

Julia Daviy Sustainable Luxury Bags Julia Daviy is a pioneering luxury designer creating the fashion industries most innovative sustainable garments, using a set of advanced technologies. The Los Angeles-based designer uses zero waste 3D printing to create innovative, ethical, cruelty-free, carbon-neutral and sustainable collections, holding them to the highest ethical and environmental standard, while standing as true efficacies of exquisite taste.

54

The bags were conceived as functional objets d’art whose striking yet elegantly nuanced design complements a wide range of ensembles. Their unique design, materials, visual texture, and production process are inspired by morphogenesis— the means by which nature produces differentiation from groups of identical cells and develops shapes. Daviy begins with the simple line as a unifying motif for the collection, creating variations on that theme that range from the voluptuously rich to the subtly understated.

“For some time,” reflects Daviy, “I have been looking to achieve zero- or even positive impact towards natural ecosystems through the transformation of standard manufacturing processes. Working in this direction, I discovered immense potential in the intersection of additive manufacturing technologies, computational design and an environment-centered approach. The Morphogenesis collection is about far more than mimicking the natural patterns. It is rather about the solutions we use today to radically sustain the products in the fashion industry.” www.theciin.com

Alan Turing first described the chemical process of morphogenesis in 1952. His findings were only validated 60 years later, just as Daviy began developing plans for a waste-free, sustainable textile manufacturing process centered around 3D printing. The Morphogenesis collection is Daviy’s first to incorporate her application of Turing’s research. The Morphogenesis line of sustainable bags is produced on 3D printers. Each bag’s material and design requires a customized manufacturing process; depending on the demands of a given bag, Daviy may use multi jet fusion, continuous digital light projection, and more traditional stereolithography, or selective laser sintering. All bags are produced using additive manufacturing processes to achieve vanishingly small degrees of wastefulness and net carbon production.

Daviy’s painstakingly calibrated production process reduces her luxury bags’ carbon footprint by more than 92%, and radically (98% -99%) decreases the water use, pollution, and waste compared with traditional leather bags' product lifecycle. Just as importantly, the entire process is traceable and transparent. To achieve full carbon zero, Julia Daviy is providing carbon footprint offset with investing in a tree planting. May, 2021

PG THINKERS PROGRAM 4:

Purificacion Garcia

60

Purificacion Garcia is proud to announce the fourth chapter of it’s regional Thinker Program, aimed at reinforcing the brand’s mission to support regional emerging talents and inspire an organic connection between art and fashion. In this chapter, the initiative strives to highlight and support emerging talents from the GCC through a curated program engaging Saudi’s creative talent. The program is designed to support and uplift society at the intersection of art, fashion and the concept of community to promote positivity. In line with this, the brand has collaborated with a selection of three regional emerging creatives - Alaa Balkhy, Malak Masllati and Osamah Maher, to showcase their work reimagined through the lens of PG. The artists were asked to create a piece of art inspired by the brands icons. The renowned Homenaje Trenzado bag, an homage to the PG logo, the cube, recreating it through leather with a hint of irony and a wink of optical illusion to forge a false sense of weaving And by #PGOptimismo, an initiative that achieved more than 1,7 million dollars through the donation of a portion of the sales of bags and accessories from May to December 2020 to improve the lives of the elderly, which embodies the spirit of EID. Alaa and Malak both created an 80 cm x 80 cm square cube which were captured by Osamah and reinterpreted the brand’s concepts in their own way, keeping in mind that the number 8 is a brand icon. www.theciin.com

61

Alaa Balkhy is a Serial Entrepreneur from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, who works as a Creative Consultant, and Illustrator. A passionate people connector bridging continents with her work. She is based between the cities of Jeddah and New York, with culture being the focus of her artistic direction. Today, she is the Founder of Minnana, a collective focusing on Arab creatives and culture which includes a Podcast, as well as Alaa Bint Hashim, a slow fashion brand that is inspired by her back-and-forth travels between Jeddah, New York, and everywhere in between. Alaa’s idea of optimism was engrained when she was a child, and thus she chose to create enlarged and playful building blocks that resemble what you might see in playgrounds and kindergartens. Inspired by her heritage, the cubes are made from the same material as an Arabian Majlis “Takaya,” comprised of recycled foam compressed into a cube shape. The playful combination brings back childhood memories using PG’s colours palette. The cubes were created in different materials and textures which are a reflection of the range of vastly different human emotions. Some are soft, while others are rigid the imperfections resembling the state of human mind. “Just like Children’s A,B,C cubes have letters, I wanted to have my own handwriting embroidered into the cubes. I chose to include verses on optimism from Arab poets.” Says Alaa. Malak Masallati is a Saudi artist with over fifteen years of experience in Interior Design and Residential Renovation. With a background in Product Design from Central Saint Martins, she worked alongside artisans in Sleysla where she found her passion in what they create. She furthered this passion after graduating from JHTA (Jameel House of Traditional Arts) and began designing and producing 100% Saudi made products. ”I believe that Saudi has treasures of artisans and a vast heritage yet to be discovered and enriched, especially as our young Saudi force possesses the knowledge and creativity that is required.” Malak Masallati founded Dar Malak which is a space that brings together the Designer, Artisan, & Maker to produce a unique Saudi product. Vacheron Constantin Presents Historiques American 1921 1921 – 2021, 100 years of boldness and a playful twist In 1921, Vacheron Constantin seized the powerful momentum of the Roaring Twenties to create a watch with an avantgarde design produced primarily for the American market. In 2021, the Maison is celebrating the anniversary of this icon, particularly appreciated by collectors and connoisseurs of Haute Horlogerie, with three new interpretations of the American 1921 model. A contemporary take on a legendary watch, honouring the visionary boldness of the Manufacture. These novelties presented at Watches & Wonders 2021, as well as the historical models epitomize the Maison’s ‘classic with a twist’ theme for 2021. They embody Vacheron Constantin’s creative energy, guided by an identity that celebrates heritage and dares to deliver the unexpected.

Three watches celebrate a signature design Vacheron Constantin is celebrating the 100th anniversary of a historic watch nicknamed the American 1921 produced primarily for the American market in a very limited number of pieces The unbridled creativity of the Roaring Twenties embodied in a cushioned case, an atypical diagonal display and an off-centre crown. For vintage watch collectors and connoisseurs, a signature design expressed through three new variations: two white gold models and a 100-piece Collection Excellence Platine limited edition. A manual-winding in-house movement, Calibre 4400 AS, with a 65-hour power reserve. A watch that has become an icon, appreciated for its ‘classic with a twist’ look.

With its cushion-shaped case, diagonal time display and crown positioned between 1 and 2 o’clock, the Historiques American 1921 model is one of the iconic watches in Vacheron Constantin's heritage. Produced for the American market between 1919 and 1921 as a very limited number of models, this avant-garde watch embodies the boldness and creativity characteristic of the Roaring Twenties. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of this legendary design, the Maison is reinterpreting this historic watch in three variations, powered by in-house manual-winding Calibre 4400 AS. Two white gold models in 40 mm and 36.5 mm diameters are complemented by straps in patinated calf leather, crafted in Milan by Italian leather goods company Serapian. A third model is part of the Collection Excellence Platine in a 100-piece individually numbered limited edition.

LACOSTE X POLAROID SS21 COLLECTION LET THE COLOUR IN

Lacoste is in full color for Spring 2021 with a fresh collaboration with Polaroid. The Crocodile strikes a pose in the boldest of brights from the rainbow. Get ready to let the color in with the collection dropping March 17. Lacoste is seeing life through rose—or red, green, and yellow—tinted glasses again in 2021: unfiltered, close-up, and wide-angle. It’s about changing perspective, putting your best foot forward, and living in the present. It’s a chance to make a fresh start and leave 2020 behind, to redial and rethink the landscape to get ready to make new memories. The best way to good vibes is a brand-new collaboration between the crocodile brand and the iconic Polaroid brand for a technicolor capsule collection that’s bold, colorful and fun.

92

GOOD VIBES ONLY Polaroid has been capturing memories on glossy instant film for over 70 years—from major events to private occasions—all in vibrant colors and warm tones. For Spring 2021, Lacoste dug deep into this legendary, high-color, and cultural heritage. Inspired by Polaroid’s famous rainbow logo from its first instant color film developed in 1963, the Lacoste x Polaroid collection centers around the distinctive blue, green, yellow, orange and red rainbow from the creative brand. The Lacoste crocodile marches across bold, blockcolor backgrounds on classic polos and hoodies, while polo dresses and shirts in oversized stripes make for a supercharged silhouette that stands out. Accessories also feature the full-color treatment, as white sneakers get subtle color-flash accents, tennis shoes go rainbow-striped, and caps, watches and backpacks are a concentration of high-energy sporty style. Look carefully and you’ll see the crocodile has taken center stage with the pièce de résistance – a limited-edition Polaroid 600 instant camera. www.theciin.com

93

LIVING IN THE HERE AND NOW Immortalized for the campaign by Simon Schmitt in Marseille, in both natural and flash lighting, dancers and skaters create a jigsaw in perpetual movement one frame at a time, image by single image. United by the characteristic Polaroid rainbow spectrum and the Lacoste pieces in the collection, each shot is a tribute to joy, boldness, and freedom. The collaboration drops online and in-store on March 17, when the Polaroid rainbow will take the floor in a super-sized decor as the collections comes to store windows. May, 2021

MARIA TASH LAUNCHES CHARM CAPSULE COLLECTION

116

Maria Tash are delighted to release a new Charm Capsule Collection featuring linear diamond designs which utilize versatility and controlled movement to deliver an unexpected and dramatic effect on the ear. This capsule introduces two new bar designs that represent an evolution of the classic Maria Tash Diamond Eternity Ring, Diamond Eternity Bar Charms and Diamond Eternity Bar Threaded Charm Earrings. The charms can also be added to the front or back of any stud for a versatile, showstopping statement. Maria Tash, Founder says: “I wanted to design an extension of our best-selling eternity rings that emphasizes beauty and detail from all angles. This goal was achieved by using new mechanisms to create controlled motion, and by incorporating two styles into one piece of jewelry. My new charms feature double-sided gemstones that are low profile and can be reversed for two distinct aesthetics. The studs can also be flipped for a diamond or gold face. Both the charms and studs move with the wearer and I designed several lengths and gem combinations so clients can layer and create dramatic pairings.” www.theciin.com

GIVENCHY PRESENTS THE SIGNATURE 4G HANDBAG Givenchy presents its new essential handbag by Creative Director Matthew M. Williams: the 4G. With its architectural lines and a distinctive attitude, the 4G immediately caught attention when it debuted in the Pre-Fall 2021 collection. A fresh take on an already-iconic emblem, it preserves the perfect symmetry prized by Hubert de Givenchy while reflecting the cosmopolitan air and clean, crisp aesthetics Matthew M. Williams has established for the House. It is both modern and timeless, the ideal signature for any silhouette, by day or by night.

124

At first glance, the 4G stands out for its pure leatherworking savoir-faire. To achieve a sleek, graphic update on the classic rectangular handbag, Matthew M. Williams worked closely with Givenchy’s expert craftsmen to select the finest, full-grain box calfskins. Reflecting his love of industrial hardware, clasps are meticulously worked using a highly technical process and a precise alchemy of noble metals: even the crisp sound of its magnetic fastening sets the 4G apart, while nodding to the utilitarian yet luxurious 4G padlocks in the Creative Director’s debut Spring 2021 collection for Givenchy. Both 4G styles - a flap bag and a chain bag - blend uncompromising luxury with perfect versatility, moving seamlessly from clutch to shoulder or crossbody styles of wear. The 4G flap bag comes with an elegant, removable strap that may be adjusted thanks to discreet metal brackets. The 4G chain bag features the House’s new, custom-made G-link chain in glamorous silver- or gold-finished metal, which glides through metal hoops to adapt as desired. The interior of each 4G bag is as beautiful as it is functional. The small 4G flap bag features a main compartment for the essentials, with a flat pocket for storing important cards. Inside the medium 4G flap bag are two flat pockets and one card pocket for ease of use. The 4G chain bags open to reveal a compartment with six card slots and one flat pocket for the small version, or a roomy interior with a single flat pocket for the medium version. A stylish and practical shoulder piece in leather keeps it anchored in place. The 4G is available in an array of colors, from neutral black, ivory, or cappuccino beige to seasonal shades of avocado green, baby pink, red and dark khaki. Special finishes include an all-over 4G monogram achieved through high-frequency debossing on leather for a three-dimensional effect (in ivory, pink or black). Patent leather versions, in black or sky blue, have a crinkled finish. A 4G in snakeprinted lambskin creates a highly realistic impression of exotic leather; a version in dark emerald green python with gold hardware is also available. The Givenchy 4G handbag by Matthew M. Williams will debut in-store on May 1st, 2021. www.theciin.com

JAEGER-LECOULTRE SHINES THE SPOTLIGHT ON RARE HANDCRAFTS™ (MÉTIERS RARES®) WITH FOUR EXCEPTIONAL REVERSO ONE TIMEPIECES

As a canvas for artistic expression, the double-sided case of the Reverso is unique in watchmaking – an opportunity for the artisans of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Métiers Rares® (Rare Handcrafts™) workshop to unleash their skills in the art of decoration.

132

For 2021 the Maison introduces four sparkling new Reverso One models that unite the codes of fine watchmaking, artistic crafts and High Jewellery to bring fresh colour, sophistication and glamour to the collection. The creation of these exquisite timepieces has brought together multiple artistic crafts – enamelling, engraving and gem-setting work – in a remarkable collaboration between highly skilled artisans who are at the peak of their powers. Inspired by the decorative jewels worn in the 1920s, Jaeger-LeCoultre’s artistic team has created four exceptional models that celebrate the poetry of flowers, with two models in white gold and two in pink gold each showcasing rare handcrafts in different combinations. The restrained elegance of the dials provides only a subtle hint that these are truly precious timepieces: the glow of white mother-of-pearl is accented by the numerals, and the golden brackets that define the four corners of the dial. It is the flip side of the case that gives full rein to the artistry and diverse skills that reside within the Jaeger-LeCoultre Manufacture, with multiple artisans applying different crafts, collaborating in a carefully orchestrated process over the course of many weeks and months. When working on such complex and collaborative projects, the artisans’ work must follow a strict order: engraving first, then enamelling – which requires multiple coats of enamel pigment to add richness, nuance and visual depth. After each coat is applied, the enamel must be fired to set the colour – an exacting process that takes many days. To complete the piece, the background is decorated with lacquer or mother-of-pearl, or is set with diamonds – according to the model. Precious Flowers in four interpretations www.theciin.com

White Lilies – symbolising purity, devotion and honour in the language of flowers – decorate a white gold case. The blank gold case-back has been relief-engraved – a technique by which the background metal is sculpted away, leaving only the raised outlines of the floral design. Each of the blooms is entirely hand-engraved, replicating the texture of lily petals in fine detail. Contrasting with the cool tones of the white gold, the leaves are enamelled in a rich blue and the stamens in light blue. To create the sky-blue background, tissue-fine wafers of mother-of-pearl are cut to the exact shape then laid in place. Grain-set diamonds embellish the entire case, wrapping seamlessly from front to back, and the winding crown is adorned with a reverse-set diamond. Pink Arums – a symbol of admiration and appreciation – complement the warm tones of a pink gold case. With a black lacquered background providing dramatic contrast, the blooms are enamelled in graduated shades of pink, while the foliage is fully set with diamonds. The winding crown is adorned with a reverseset diamond, and grain-set diamonds embellish the entire case, wrapping seamlessly from front to back. Two fully diamond-set models also feature Arums: Purple Arums (on pink gold) symbolise charm and passion, and Blue Arums (on white gold) symbolise grace and refinement. On these two watches, the flowers and leaves are all enamelled, and the entire background is snow-set with diamonds – an exacting technique that requires approximately one hour to set just five or six stones. Altogether, the gem-setting on these pieces requires a total of 95 hours. The floral design wraps seamlessly around the case-sides, from the back to the bezel, involving curves and angles that add a high degree of complexity to the artisans’ work. Set in the elongated Reverso One case and complemented by shiny alligator straps in vivid colours, these new timepieces are a joyous expression of feminine elegance. Naturally, given the Maison’s mastery of technical watchmaking, there has been no compromise on the movement, and Reverso One Precious Flowers introduces the hand-wound Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 846, a shaped movement developed especially for the Reverso. To be made in an edition of just 10 pieces of each model, every one of these miniature works of art is subtly different – their fine detailing and nuanced colour palettes the product of each artisan’s particular gestures, expressing their passion and personality, as well as their remarkable skill. Conceived as an ode to 21st-Century femininity, these new Reverso One timepieces attest to the horological savoir-faire, artistic craftsmanship and jewellery-making skills of La Grande Maison, while paying homage to the women who inspire Jaeger-LeCoultre every day.

Celebrate the Month of Emeralds with Gemfields

With the arrival of May and the green shoots of spring all around us, jewellery buyers’ thoughts inevitably turn to emeralds. Fresh, verdant and the birthstone of this most welcome of months, emeralds represent hope, peace, growth, nature and new beginnings: all of which are needed more than ever this year, as we emerge from the ravages of the pandemic and a hard lockeddown winter. One of the “big three” coloured gemstones – alongside rubies and sapphires – emeralds are twenty times more rare than colourless diamonds, and have always been iconic. They even have their own cut named after them – the “emerald cut”, a square shape with stepped facets that is one of the most popular shapes for engagement rings. Emeralds have been prized through the ages, for their opulent appearance and glowing green hue and for their talismanic properties. First discovered deep within the earth some 5,000 years ago, they have long been associated with an almost otherworldly ability to heal: they are credited with everything from easing the pain of childbirth to foretelling the future (when placed under the tongue, apparently) and curing snakebites and demonic possession. Romans believed emeralds could revitalise the soul; Indian Mughal emperors thought their greenness represented paradise; Moses and the early Christians saw them as representing the resurrection of Christ; and Cleopatra presented them to subjects as good luck tokens. More recently, they have been a status symbol for famous and aristocratic members of society, from Queen Victoria, whose emerald and diamond tiara from Prince Albert was a cherished possession, to Elizabeth Taylor, who was gifted them by Richard Burton. And they are still a most popular and glamorous choice for celebrities walking the red carpets today. Daniel Nyfeler of Gübelin Gem Lab explains the historical allure of these vibrant green gems: “To hold an emerald in your hand, knowing that it has witnessed millions, even billions, of years of history on our planet is thrilling.” May, 2021

Sino-Italian Cultural Exchange City Reception Center

140

Chengdu, China

www.theciin.com

To introduce this meeting of culture, aoe created a Cultural Exchange City Reception Center in the city where it all begun. The marriage of the Italian and Sino style was at the heart of the project to illustrate the cultural mix and was adapted to merge the structure and its surrounding. Chengdu hailed as the land of abundance, has a civilization history of 4,500 years old and a city construction history of 2,300 years old. In the 13th century, Marco Polo came to Chengdu, the Corridor Bridge, the Jinjiang River and the cloth of ancient Sichuan became the most colorful parts of his travelogue. In the 21st century, against the background of the Belt and Road Initiative, the planning of Chengdu Tianfu Cultural and Creative City came into being, and the Sino-Italian Cultural Exchange City Reception Center is an important part of the City, aiming to build a platform for cultural exchange and civilization interchange between the two countries. The project is located about 36 kilometers from the center of Chengdu, planned to cover an area of 17,815 square meters, with a construction area of 2,107 square meters. At the platform of the exhibition hall, the creative group projects on the east side and the natural landscape of Yanqi Wetland are treats for visitors.

May, 2021

141

142

The architects hoped to find the intersection of the two in the cultural differences between the East and the West: the overall design concept was taken from the "Ruyi", which has been used in China since ancient times as a gift to foreign ambassadors to signify the conclusion of friendly relations and the peace of the two countries; while the Italian pavilion draws its design inspiration from Italy's most representative piazza, shaping an intimate and pleasantly scaled urban art living room. The design elements are extracted from the ancient Roman arches and domes, and the smooth enclosure of multiple circular squares is used to form a rich and versatile use of space to meet the multi-functional requirements of exhibition, meeting, reception, and catering. The use of pure white on all walls gives the building a different three-dimensional light effect in the sunlight, while the large area of glass extends the indoor space to the outside and allows the outdoor scenery to be fully mapped in, becoming a dynamic mural of the four seasons. With the change of wall materials, the designer creates the feeling of space that is both inside and outside, and the pavilion is thus perfectly integrated into the surrounding natural environment. The harmony between architecture and nature lies in the use of natural resources as well as in the protection of the natural environment. The pavilions on both sides are designed with top lighting so that the light is evenly diffused in the indoor and outdoor spaces. In addition, the introduction of multi-level outdoor greenery and the use of buoyant ventilation devices to channel airflow into the building organically combine the natural elements of light, scenery, and wind, allowing people to perceive and coexist with the surrounding natural environment while they are in the building. Meanwhile, the building design reveres the existing ecological environment and uses materials and means such as Low-E glass, local wood, and green roofs to reduce building energy consumption and achieve sustainable construction. The exhibition hall serves as an important part for linking and integrating the surrounding ecological forest. In terms of space planning, the designer has reserved the most flexible space for exhibition and display. The staggered height of the building allows visitors to stand at different heights and view different scenery, creating a "walk in the woods" mood and a unique experience. The interior of the building is a flowing space shaped by 10 circular walls of different sizes, which are divided into three levels of elevation in accordance with the terrain, rising from the entrance hall to the interior space step by step, with two circular skylights in the entrance hall and the central exhibition hall to guide visitors from the entrance hall to the main exhibition hall. The ceiling is controlled at the same level, and the height of the space is richly varied. Except for the round solid wall, the interior and exterior boundaries are all glass, fully incorporating the outdoor landscape into the interior and the natural landscape as part of the exhibition in the form of framed scenery. The circular space consists of two spatial forms: indoor and piazza; three outdoor semi-circular piazzas are defined as the entrance fountain piazza, the Italian piazza, and the outdoor theater, each reproducing a typical Italian urban piazza space. The Piazza Italia is surrounded by the ruins of the Roman arches. The three indoor circular spaces are designed as a meeting hall, a multi-functional hall, and a multimedia showroom, which are arranged around the central exhibition hall. By controlling the size of the circular wall openings, the light and darkness of the space are defined, while the meeting room is surrounded by water features and sculptures. The other five outdoor semi-circular walls are surrounded by greenery and mountains, facing nature.

www.theciin.com

143

The visitor crosses the gable to the Italian piazza and ascends a curved staircase to the roof garden. There are two circular gardens, one in the east and one in the west, which are complemented by the contrast between natural vegetation and stone. The Chinese Cultural Hall on the east side is reached by walking down through the cultural corridor or stepping over the Chinese white jade pavement above the water pond. The two paths symbolize the two Silk Roads between East and West, on land and on water. May, 2021

NEW FERRARI LIMITEDEDITION V12

THE COUNTDOWN HAS BEGUN

144

www.theciin.com

The first official images of Ferrari’s latest limited-edition special series have been published in the build-up to its world premiere, which will be broadcast live on the Maranello marque’s social media channels on May 5 at 14:30 CEST. The new model is the ultimate expression of Ferrari’s concept of an extreme front-engined berlinetta, honing the characteristics of the critically-acclaimed 812 Superfast to a level never seen before. The result is a car that encapsulates and epitomises the company’s 70-plus years of experience on the world’s circuits, drawing on its thoroughbred sports car DNA to deliver a perfect marriage of performance, form, and function. Aimed at Ferrari’s most passionate collectors and connoisseurs, it features numerous uncompromising engineering solutions to guarantee peerless driving pleasure.

145

May, 2021

146

A

s is the case with all Ferrari’s cars, the most striking feature lies at its very heart: in this instance the latest evolution of Maranello’s legendary 65° V12 engine, which reaches the highest output of any Ferrari road-car engine – 830 cv – and revs to 9,500 rpm, again the highest of any Ferrari ICE. The use of state-of-the-art materials, the redesign of many of the engine’s key components, a new valve timing mechanism and a new exhaust system are just some of the technical solutions that allow the most noble of Ferrari engines to deliver performance levels that are unprecedented in the V12 segment. The pure yet brutal power unleashed by the powertrain is paired with class-leading vehicle dynamics controls to ensure that the performance can be fully exploited and to guarantee maximum fun behind the wheel. Most distinctive of these solutions is the adoption of independent steering on all four wheels. This extends the feeling of agility and precision when cornering as well as providing unparalleled responsiveness to steering inputs. Another noteworthy engineering achievement is the development work undertaken to reduce the car’s overall weight compared to the 812 Superfast. This was achieved in particular by extensive use of carbon fibre, both on the exterior and in the cockpit. Lastly,

the new model premieres version 7.0 of the renowned Side Slip Control vehicle dynamics system. One of the most striking aspects of this new model is how in-depth aerodynamic research has altered the car’s lines. Working in close synergy with the Ferrari Styling Centre, the aerodynamicists have adopted solutions that are extreme in form featuring profiles that are unprecedented for a road-legal car. The aerodynamic redesign of the whole car was aimed at maximising downforce levels: from the new front air intakes, rear diffuser and exhaust configuration to the patented design of the rear screen – which now hosts vortex generators – every modification is a faithful expression of Ferrari’s core belief that form must always follow function. From a design point of view, this new special series has a strong personality all of its own that differentiates it significantly from the 812 Superfast on which it is based: this was achieved by choosing styling themes that further enhance the architectural design and dynamism of the 812 Superfast, pushing its sporty vocation to new extremes. One example of this is the decision to replace the glass rear screen with a single-piece aluminium structure. The vortex generators it sports improve the car’s aerodynamic efficiency, but the design solution chosen, which is fully integrated with the

www.theciin.com

roof, simultaneously creates a backbone effect that underscores the car’s sculptural forms. Together with the carbon-fibre blade that traverses the bonnet, this motif changes the overall perception of the car’s volumes: the bonnet seems shorter, emphasising the width of the car, and the tail now has a more powerful, fastback look, thus making it appear more compact and competition-like despite it sharing the 812 Superfast’s silhouette, proportions and formal balance. Even the rear spoiler now looks more imposing: it is higher but the specific design treatment used also makes the tail look very wide, almost horizontal. The interior architecture very much reflects that of the 812 Superfast, retaining the main dash and door panel interfaces and volumes, including the signature diapason motif. Along with other elements of the interior, the door panel has been redesigned to reduce weight and, combined with the introduction of the H-gate theme on the tunnel, this lends the cockpit a sportier, more modern edge that reflects the car’s racing spirit.

Cartagena de Indias Mystified in romance, legends and beautiful colonial era antiquity, this city captivates visitors and travelers with its cobbled alleys, enormous balconies draped in bougainvillea and horse-drawn carriages www.theciin.com

153

The sea breeze and the sunset that transform the colors of 400-year-old houses enchant visitors in Cartagena, Colombia’s iconic port city founded by Pedro de Heredia in 1533. Cartagena de Indias, or Cartagena, was named for the famous Spanish City of Cartagena which, in turn, takes its name from the great merchant city that once rivaled Rome itself – Carthage. Situated on a bay in the Caribbean Sea, Cartagena was built between the 14th and 19th centuries and has the most extensive fortifications in South America. The city’s well-preserved 11-kilometer wall, encompassing the Old Town where Hotel Casa San Agustin is located, was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. This colonial town was one of the three most important ports in the West Indies and became a target for pirates as the city flourished. As the top bastion of the Spanish overseas empire, the city influenced much of Colombia’s history.

Casa San Agustin is the perfect hotel to stay in. A luxurious small hotel lovingly restored and reimagined for a new generation of travelers. The exquisite property, member of The Leading Hotels of theWorld, echoes Cartagena’s fresh contemporary style and colorful Caribbean sensibility. Refined yet relaxed, its trio of colonial era white-washed buildings exudes the warmth of a magnificently appointed private residence. From original frescoes in the library to centuries-old wood-beamed ceilings in the guest rooms, Casa San Agustín’s art and architecture evoke the city’s rich history as 17th century Spanish stronghold. The hotel’s 30 beautifully decorated guest rooms and spacious suites showcase authentic Colombian style while seamlessly incorporating the modern services and amenities contemporary travelers seek. Some of the hotel’s suites can be combined into one two-bedroom suite, making them ideal for sharing with friends and family traveling together. A palette of cool and refreshing blues and greens inspired by the Caribbean Sea can be found throughout the guest rooms, while natural fabrics and textures balance the use of original dark wood-beamed ceilings and accents. Local artisans were commissioned to create bespoke furnishings including ironwork beds, chandeliers, and sconces in combination with vintage pieces and artifacts, reflecting a sensibility that is more like a luxurious private home than a hotel. www.theciin.com
