Autumn 2 December 2019

Incredible End of Term Performances From Music & Drama On Wednesday 11 December the Music department wowed audiences with their Winter Concert. Featuring performances from Y7 through to 6th formers it was, in the words of Ms Sarchet, ‘A joyous occasion!’ Here are just a few photo highlights from the night.

On Monday 16 & Tuesday 17 December KS4 drama students performed The Snow Queen. Immy, Abbie, Aaliyat and Tess in year 10 tell us about it: “It was a great experience, especially for those starring in their first production. During rehearsals, we put together scenes and choreographed dances. As time went on, the play progressed and the cast really got to become their characters and understand the roles. We had so much fun not only acting, but creating the set, getting to know each other and working as a collective. As we are all from different year groups and classes, we hve got to know each other and created friendships that will last beyond this show. It has been a truly memorable experience for everyone working on this performance and everyone had a fantastic time in every rehearsal, including Saturdays. We would like to say a huge thank you to the drama teachers and tech, who put so much time and effort into making the best it could possibly be.”

6 We’ve also been hearing from some of the staff who have been here at TCAH since the beginning. Nasma Katon, HR Manager, remembers seeing the school as a building site “I lived in Hackney and worked just up the road at Homerton Hospital. I saw the building site being developed and I knew that was where I wanted to work!” Kate McClennon, Head of House, when asked her favourite memory of the first 10 years just couldn’t choose, “There’s so many, all the school shows, the sports fixtures, the outstanding from Ofsted, seeing so many Young people achieve so many fantastic things.” Liz Jones, Head of Music, says “Having not worked in Hackney before, I was absolutely blown away by the natural talent, enthusiasm and energy all of the pupils had! We always have high expectations and the pupils always exceed them even 10 years on. For me it’s what the job is all about.”

10 Principal, Mark Malcolm, has also been a teacher here since 2009. The most inspiring moment he has witnessed in those 10 years was “When one of the ex-students returned and spoke to the year 11 students in assembly about the importance of resilience and dedication to hard work. He had transformed himself and had grown up so much.”

‘I went to Oriel College at Oxford University from the 8th-11th December, for an interview in Philosophy, Politics and Economics. Arriving on a rainy evening at 7pm, I was warmly welcomed by the undergraduates at my college and invited to attend social activities which encouraged me to exit my comfort zone and engage with people from as far away as Poland. Nothing matched the horror images I had presumed with all the expectations I knew I had back at home and school. Having to do three interviews in two days didn’t hinder the value of the experience at Oxford, as I realised that the true taste of success only exists when you live it, not expect it. Regardless of the outcome, I successfully had dodged my phobia of towns like Oxford which are socially unidentical to London, through my enthusiasm to counterbalance my overwhelming interviews with a desire to mix in and promote social and educational diversity.’

Stop Press Labour win TCAH mock election! It was a closely fought affair with candidates making really strong arguments for their parties. The wider school engaged with the debate in a very positive manner.
