Autumn 2 Issue December 2017
Winter Concert Months of dedication came to a satisfying end last Thursday when the Music department presented their Winter Show. Ms Jones, Ms Cran, Ms Zembron, Mr Gill and Mr Khan worked across all year groups to showcase the budding musical talent The City Academy is famous for nurturing. James Bkola bravely kicked everything off with his solo of It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas with Mr Gill and The Big Band finishing up the first half with a very cool jazz number.
Special mention must go to the comperes James Bokola, Henry Sharples, Ansu Njai and Tyrese Malcolm (above), who reprised their ‘Sister Act’ roles and kept us all laughing throughout.
During the second half, the string group played a beautiful version of Vivaldi’s Winter, 1st Movement accompanied by the incredibly talented Kai Ogden who blew everyone away with his solo. With the help of the dedicated Ms Zembron, the staff choir earned a rousing applause with their version of We wish you a merry Christmas, and the evening concluded with all students coming together for He lives in you from The Lion King (left). The event was a perfect end of term celebration and left the audience feeling imbued with a festive spirit.

Students ponder the ‘multi-faceted brain’ On the 16th November, 11 sixth formers and 2 year 10s travelled to the City of London School for Girls to attend a psychology conference with contributions from Dr Gillian Fine, psychiatrist Dr Eli Silber, neurologist and Mr Raghu Vindlacheruvu, neurosurgeon. Students learnt about how the brain can be viewed from different perspectives and how each discipline would treat its abnormalities.
Question Time event at Westminster Abbey On the 9th November year 12 students took part in a 16+ Question Time event at St. Margaret’s Church, Westminster Abbey. The debate included schools around the UK and discussed topics such as politics (UK – Conservative recent interest in young voters and US – Donald Trump); media and reporting of terrorist attacks; legislations on protesting and free speech and equal representation in the workplace (recent harassment claims). Claire Fox who is the director of the Institute of Ideas chaired the event and the panellists included Abigail Morris, Sally Hitchiner, Shaykh Ibrahim Mogra and Helen Whatley. The students participated and were engaged throughout the debate.
GCSE Art students went to London Zoo.
Sixth formers embarked on their Duke of Edinburgh expedition.
Year 10 GCSE food tech students learnt from Mark Crowe, a professional chef from Future Chef.

‘Centre of the Cell’ - Clinton Shoyemi, year 12. “In October, year 10 and 12 Biology students visited the ‘Centre of the Cell’ at Whitechapel campus, Queen Mary University of London. It is situated in a large pod within the building, which contained a computer cell-like structure, packed with biomedical games and activities. When we first arrived we were introduced to two biomedical scientists, who spoke to us about their role at the centre as biomedical scientists. They research cancerous cells and explained to us how important their research was to the medical industry, whilst also indicating how competitive this industry was as a whole. We were then given a chance to explore the pod. It was a vastly immersive room loaded with computers as well as other interesting information and equipment. The introductions and intervals of the sessions were very useful in terms of providing relevant factual information, such as the rate in which cancerous cells divide or the number of cells in one tissue. The pod was also very interactive, and this enabled us to engage with the activities around us and absorb all of the interesting knowledge on a more practical level. After a while, many of us took on challenges to beat each other’s scores. Additionally the mentors were free to answer any queries we had, which was particularly beneficial for us students. Overall, the trip was interesting and enjoyable providing us with the background knowledge to some of the main concepts taught to us in class, which gave us insight into the real life of work.”

Sixth Formers wow judges at Mercers’ Schools Enterprise Competition On the 23rd of November Year 12 students pitched their hearts out at the Livery Academy Awards. Hosted by the Mercers’ Company, the year 12s had their most impressive year yet. The students worked extremely hard to get there, having joined the competition later than competing schools, yet still managed to deliver a highly professional and convincing pitch to the audience and come in third. As a result they have won £1,000 for the school and a tailored further education/careers guidance program with The Brokerage Citylink Ltd. Some audience members were so impressed by the quality of speaking from certain members of the group that they were offered work placement/experience opportunities by one of the judges and a member of the Mercer Company.

‘The Government Inspector’ - Mr Thomas, Head of Drama. “On Wednesday 29th and Thursday 30th November, our extremely talented GCSE drama students performed this year’s Key Stage 4 show, The Government Inspector. A hilarious comedy about mistaken identity satirising the corruption of 1830s Russia still has a lot of relevance in today’s society and this was evident as the audience were raising the roof with laughter. This play is the GCSE set text and what better way to have a full and in-depth understanding of it than actually being part of it? The students who participated have really accomplished something special, as it is often said that it is harder to make an audience laugh than it is to cry and those involved had a thoroughly enjoyable experience in utilising all their comic skills. What a great way to end the term!”

Big Band Gala Event On Thursday 2nd November the City Academy Hackney Big Band performed at the Hackney Music Service Gala. What better venue for the first performance outside of the Academy walls than the Hackney Empire! The band rocked the venue with a funky rendition of Cissy Strut (originally by The Metres), to the delight of the 1,200 fans in the audience. A special mention to Linus Sheaff (Yr 10- bass), Edmund Corbluth (Yr 11 - trumpet), David Williams (Yr 8 - sax) and Josh Owusu (Yr 13 - trombone) for taking a solo. What makes this performance even more of an achievement is the fact that a third of the band have only been playing their instrument for a year. This is further proof that the Project Band programme at The City Academy is a huge success that gives pupils an opportunity not many other schools can provide. To top off a fantastic evening, The City Academy Music department received a commendation for setting up the Music Academy mentoring scheme. This is a fantastic opportunity for our 40 newly awarded scholars. They will soon be paired up with professional musicians to oversee their musical performances and aims.
Students get the opportunity to brush up on their tech skills at The Guildhall School of Music. The music scholars and music tech students attended a masterclass on Logic Pro X recently at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. The masterclass covered everything from the basics up to university-level functions. The workshop consisted of a lecturer programming, recording, mixing and mastering a song live on stage. This proved to be a fantastic, eye-opening experience for the pupils to see the full potential of a programme they have open access to at school.
“It was amazing to see him bring performers on the stage, record them and then built up a song from scratch, right in front of us” Alfred “I can¹t believe how in just 2 hours it went from nothing to a whole song” Kie “I took some of the principles learned in the masterclass and tried them at home on a slightly different programme. It is interesting to see how the two different pieces of music software can do similar things but in different ways” Linus
Sutton House Workshop On Thursday 30th November, we invited a group of our scholar musicians to an improvisation workshop at Sutton House, run by two of our top experienced peripatetic teachers Vijay Prakash and Johnny Brierley. Both are experienced jazz musicians and teachers, giving the students a great insight into how improv can work with practice and building confidence in this skill. This will be the first in a series of workshops aimed at different instrument/vocal groups to develop musicianship at all levels.
Students sell for charity On Sunday 17th December year 9 D&T students braved a cold Sunday at Chatsworth Road Market in order to sell their own hand made Christmassy products. Students dedicated their whole Sunday to selling and made £246.31 for Save the Children UK.
