Debating at the City of London A group of students participated in the City of London Debate Competition at the City of London, at the Livery Hall in the Guildhall. Five schools across the City of London network participated in the event (chaired by former Principal Mark Emmerson). The motion was: ‘The Government should censor the internet in the UK’. Two speakers from each school were put forward into two teams of 5 (cross-school teams). Special mention to Delenn Pantlitz and Camille Mackay who represented City Academy on the proposition and opposition teams. The opposition team won with some very compelling arguments about freedom of speech/tricky logistics of a full ban. The students said that it was a great opportunity to meet other people their age, learn more about a current topical issue and practise their argumentative skills!
Parent Days

PSA Second Hand Uniform Shop Are you a parent of a student in year 11? Please donate their blazer and/or any uniform items in good condition to the PSA second hand uniform shop. This academic year - alongside the events they run each term - our Parent Staff Association (PSA) has set up a regular second hand uniform sale. This is a fantastic initiative that parents/ carers are already supporting and benefitting from. Sales are held on the second Friday of each month, provided it is in term time, between 4 - 6 pm by our school reception. Parents are invited to show up between those times to find any uniform they may need. Money raised by the sales goes towards any cleaning costs, and profits are put back into the PSA for events throughout the year such as Subject Evenings, and refreshments at concerts/performances. Next Sale: Friday 12 May, 4 - 6 pm

World Book Day Many staff in the school dressed up for World Book Day on Monday 27 February. Staff participated in a fashion show during assembly, encouraging students to guess the character they were dressed as. Ms Towers, the Learning Resources Manager, held a host of events for World Book Day including a Where’s Wally? competition with 10 Wally pictures hidden around the school building, a competition to guess the number of words read by students last year, and an opportunity to exchange tokens for a book. World Book Day takes place every year and is a great opportunity to promote literacy and a love of reading amongst the students.

Montpellier trip
Wake Up and Play!
30 year 10 French students did the City Academy proud this term during a trip to Montpellier. They interacted with the locals, discovered some fascinating history and honed their skills at pĂŠtanque, whilst still remembering the basics of line-up before lessons. The weather was spectacular and the host families were impressed with how impeccably well behaved our students were.
As a result of the new scheme of work in the music department promoting piano work, Ms Zembron has been inspired by the year 7’s enthusiasm for the instrument and created a new morning club for the year 7 students Wake Up and Play! The music department hold a variety of music clubs and acitivities for all year groups; tickets for the summer musical will be available on ParentPay soon.

IntoUniversity
Careers Week
The City Academy, Hackney has paired up with IntoUniversity, an education charity which offers students free academic support and mentoring. It works in partnerships with businesses and universities to offer information, advice and the development of skills that promote success. Long-term programmes of workshops for targeted groups of Academy students from all years are available; Year 11 students are currently researching Russell group universities, whilst year 7s are learning about the importance of time management and organisation.
The start of March saw National Careers Week, and our Careers Advisor Ms Patel arranged a range of events to give students an idea of options available to them after leaving school. The school hosted a speaker from The Ministry of Justice to promote the Civil Service Fast Track Apprenticeship Scheme and speak to year 11 and Sixth Form students about the opportunities available within the Civil Service. Later in the week, students were able to attend an Apprenticeship Fair at Hackney Jobcentre Plus in Mare Street to meet with current apprentices and network with local businesses, professionals as well as representatives from local employers.

Salamanca trip This term, year 10 MFL students settled into the Spanish way of life during a trip in stunning Salamanca. They were able to get involved with cooking tortilla de patatas, learning to dance Sevillanas, brushing up on Spanish history and generally charming the locals. The MFL department hold these trips every year in order to give our GCSE students experience in using their language skills in real life situations whilst living within the culture they are studying.
