As the summer holiday commences, we look back on a really successful term, which included lots of hard work but also plenty of opportunities to celebrate too
At The City Academy, Hackney we are so proud of all our students who are not only pleasant and hardworking but have a strong desire to succeed. Our year 11 & year 13 students in particular have shown their eagerness to succeed during their final exams.
Culture Day
On Monday 10th July, The City Academy, Hackney hosted our first Culture Day It was a day that celebrated diversity and togetherness Students came in wearing clothes that were representative of their heritage and nationality
Throughout the school there were a variety of workshops: flamenco dancing, Windrush stories; flag making; world games and sumo wrestling. Then to round off the day we had a celebratory cat walk of student wearing their traditional clothing.

BigBang Day
On Tuesday 4th July, we held our annual Big Bang Day event. Students in year 7-9 watched exciting science shows presented by the Royal Institution and Centre of the Cell group from Queen Mary University. It was a great opportunity for students to gain an insight into science related jobs. We welcomed back ex-student Kenelia Powell, an ex-City student now studying at the Royal Veterinary College.
Year11 Prom
In celebration of our Year 11s moving on to their next chapter, they danced their hearts away at prom They were greeted with a long red carpet before entering the Round Chapel where they were photographed and cheered by members of staff and other students watching. Inside, the dance floor was packed and everyone got a chance to show off their moves. They had amazing time listening to music whilst eating pizza, sweets and fizzy drinks! It was truly a night to remember
Sports Awards2023
Our annual Sports Awards gave students and staff the opportunity to celebrate an unprecedented year of sporting success for The City Academy.
This year we became the holders of the London Cup for boys' football at both U16 and U14 level; our year 7 girls' basketball team came third in the Junior NBA & a range of our students represented Hackney at the London Youth Games. We are really proud of all that students have achieved in sport this year

TripDay
To celebrate the completion of end of year exams, we held "Trip Day" offering every student the opportunity to experience something new Students visited the Science Museum, Thorpe Park, the Tate Britain, the Imperial War Museum and the Museum of the Home amongst others. Dezion Simpson (Y8) described his time at the Museum of the Home as, “Surprisingly interesting! There was a lot to explore and discover, I specifically enjoyed looking at the houses built in the 1800s”.
SportsDay
On Tuesday 18th July, The City Academy Hackney had our annual sports day. It was a great representation of what our Academy is about. Whilst being in an environment that is fuelled with competition and rivalry it was incredible to see the level of encouragement and support that our students were giving each other
A huge congratulations to house Moorgate who are the 2023 sports day winners!
Project Band
Year 7 have spent all year leaning and practising their instruments for Project Band This culminated in the Project Band concert, where each class performed a different song The concert, attended by both students and parents, was a huge success and a fantastic celebration of all the hard work the students have put in this year A video of the concert will be available on our website to those family members who were not able to attend A special thanks goes to the instrumental teachers, without whom this project would not be the success it is
