Blogging team wins media award Congratulations to the Sharp Magazine blogging team, winners of the Best Online award at this year’s Shine Media Awards. Ms Thomas and Mr. McGuigan accompanied our student writers to the award ceremony, who were presented their award by Daily Mail columnist Simon Heffer. Our online magazine, featuring a broad range of news and reviews, from sports to books, fashion to art, is written and managed entirely by our dedicated team

of student journalists and run as part of Ms Thomas’ additional studies class. Sharp’s deputy editor Connie Hatt said, “We are thrilled to have won the award. The editorial team has worked so hard to get the magazine up and running this year, and for that to be recognised in a national competition is incredible.” To read the latest news and reviews, visit sharpmag.wordpress.com. Keep an eye out for a new-look blog, photo galleries and many more features on our brand new website launching in September.

At the start of next term I will stand down as chair of governors. It has been a tremendous privilege to be Chair and I am very proud of all that the Academy has achieved so far. It’s not every school that The Times describes as “a beacon”! I hope to continue as a governor, but want to take this opportunity to wish you all – and in particular our students – every success for the future, and to thank you for your support through these crucial first few years. Global voyage

Japanese Peaceboat sets sail for Hackney On Friday 22 June a group of Japanese visitors from Peaceboat visited The Academy to learn about life in Hackney, teach our students about Japanese culture and spread a message of peace, human rights and respect. Students tried their hand at origami, Japanese juggling and calligraphy. Photos from the day will be posted online soon. For more information about the Peaceboat organisation, visit www.peaceboat.org.

A message from our Chair of Governors

From September 2012, all Key Stage 4 students (Year 10 and 11) will wear a light blue shirt to differentiate them from Key Stage 3. Our Student Council felt it was important to change the uniform in some way to acknowledge their transition to Key Stage 4 whilst limiting the cost to parents, and they agreed the new shirt colour was the best option for this. Further guidance will be sent to all Year 9 parents.

Teen Tech runners-up

design

by Jessica Faria On Monday 14 May our top performing Business and ICT students in Year 8 were invited to attend the Cisco Teen

Tech event at Westfield Stratford City. We were given the opportunity to discover gadgets of the future, test out 3D TVs, learn how broadband reaches our homes and design our very own smart phone app. Our entry, Tek House - that would message you if your house was broken into, as well as control the lighting in your home for security reasons - won second prize in the app development challenge. Ismail Bin-Abu said, “It was fabulous and wonderful and now I know a lot more about careers in science and engineering.”

Following on from last month’s article, Dylan Owen, Coby Hippolyte Aldred, Darlington Nwosu and Laurel Mannering Thorne, also known as Team Re:generation, presented their winning plans for the regeneration of Chatsworth Road to a panel of judges on 29 May. Their proposal, incorporating a park area, was designed to bring the community together. Darlington said, “We want the government to help restore Chatsworth Road to its former glory. We had a great market that lasted through two world wars and we asked the community what they wanted. They wanted a park.” Their winning proposal was judged by a team of panellists from KPMG and The Guildhall at Mansion House and will now be taken forward to the Traders’ and Residents’ Association for consideration. Well done to all the students and staff involved in the seven week programme. It’s great to be able to contribute to the community we are part of.

Science rocks!

Yusra Kerbouba revises the rock cycle using a cut and paste factmatching wheel.

Emmanuel Zeta poses questions to the science experts via the Wellcome Trust forum.

Sublimation explanation There’s nothing better than putting theory into practice in science lessons. This term our students even made their own ice cream - not to eat, but to learn about sublimation - when a substance (in this case, dry ice) turns directly from a solid to a gas. Apparently, the rapid cooling of the frozen Carbon Dioxide, as it turns straight from solid to gas, produces very smooth ice cream. Meanwhile, Ms Negash’s class revised the rock cycle using our handheld quiz remotes and Ms Broughton’s class conducted a live web forum with a team of scientists. Entitled, I’m a Scientist, Get Me Out of Here!, the web chat, set up by the Wellcome Trust, gave our students the chance to ask the experts anything. Emmanuel Zeta (above, right) wanted to know, “How do brain waves travel to other parts of your body?”. The science expert then posted their response on the website for everyone to read. “Through nerve cells like the wires in your home. When you flick a light switch, the lights go on immediately, right?” came the reply.

On Wednesday 11 July, we are very pleased to be welcoming author, Alex Wheatle to The Academy to speak to our Year 9 students. Having been part of the Brixton riots, Wheatle went on to write a series of books based on his experiences and received an MBE from the Queen in 2008.

An Olympic effort London Youth Games hockey tournament Our hockey teams were in action in Redbridge this month. Thanks to our girls’team captain, Rebecca for her first-hand account of our team’s performance at the London Youth Games. Having only played hockey for a couple of months, the team did astoundingly well and performed to the best of their ability at the London Youth Games. We drew one game against Kensington and Chelsea, which was a fantastic effort by all because the other team were much more experienced than we were. A special mention to Tyreesha Blaxill, Pinar Eris and Maicca Cas who all put in phenomenal performances. I really hope all members of the team keep coming to Hockey Club and we attract new players, because it’s a great sport and it would be great for our team to build on their skills. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our hockey coaches who came along: Ms Sumpter and Ms O’Riordon for their excellent work with the girls and our Arsenal coach Chantel who have taught us all we know about hockey. Rebecca Dale, Team Captain (Girls)
