MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto before it suddenly shut down, and the mosque with it, in January. Both buildings were served with orders branding them "unsafe" - both lacked fire safety systems required for places of worship and schools - but the city also acted because they were in an employment area it wants to save. Michael Thompson, chairperson of Toronto’s Economic Development Committee, says the city is not picking on any religious groups, but Sakinah and Canada Kanthaswamy both
ignored the city’s warnings about improper zoning. "A lot of folks are just not wanting to follow the rules." Part of the problem is this industrial part of Birchmount is already dotted with places of worship and private schools, as are many employment zones across the city. Seeking to stop a trend, the city clamped down in 2013 with a new bylaw, though it seems it sometimes takes inspectors years to find and act against new places of worship existing where they shouldn’t. To leaders of religious institutions struggling to find an affordable building - and who perhaps received bad advice this must look awfully unfair, and empty industrial real estate awfully tempting. But what about those believers who scraped together the donations, the money for lessons? Where can they go now?
“There is enough education and awareness about the dangers of drunk or drugged driving that there’s no excuse to get behind the wheel impaired.”

Toronto is a place of religious freedom, but isn’t a friendly place for religious groups which lack a lot of patience and money. If you want to start a church, mosque, or temple, and you don’t want to rent space in another religious institution, your options are limited. Building a place of worship takes plenty of time and cash. If you don’t have that, you’re more likely to do something foolish, such as moving into an old warehouse or factory. On a stretch of Birchmount Road in Scarborough, the city shut down a Hindu temple last month. The Canada Kanthaswamy Temple Society held services in a warehouse for years, temporarily, while its home on the same street is being rebuilt. The Sakinah Centre opened a mosque and private school in an industrial building two doors away from that warehouse. More than 100 children attended the school
cost is staggering; innocent people’s lives changed in an instant, without their consent. The financial cost to all parties involved can be catastrophic; draining their savings and in some cases, losing their homes because of court costs or stacking medical bills. The Toronto Police Service, along with 16 other police services across the province, launched its annual holiday R.I.D.E. campaign last month. Toronto police are out every night until after the new year holding spot checks at various locations across the city – working to keep you safe. But drivers have a responsibility. Pay for the long cab ride, take Uber, arrange for a designated driver or call someone you trust to pick you up. Making arrangements to enjoy yourself, but not taking the unnecessary risk of getting in the driver’s seat impaired, is the best gift you can give yourself this holiday season. If you’re heading out to celebrate the start of 2017, Corby Spirit and Wine is partnering with the TTC to offer complimentary rides home for revelers. There are options everywhere. No good time is worth driving impaired.

INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS TEMPT THE FAITHFUL
The holidays are a time of year for family gatherings, evenings out with friends and reminiscing about the year that was, and looking ahead to what might come. With every story shared of dreams fulfilled, or those that remained just out of reach, alcohol may be a regular companion at the table. Catching up over a bottle of wine isn’t uncommon during the holidays, but what shouldn’t become common is getting behind the wheel after an evening of drinking - now, or at any time of year. MADD Canada reports that accidents involving alcohol and/or drugs are the leading criminal cause of death in Canada. Its website reports that in 2012, there were 2,546 crash deaths. Of those, 1,497 involved drivers who had some alcohol or drug presence in their system. That works out to almost 60 per cent of people who knowingly turned the key in the ignition after consuming alcohol or drugs. But that doesn’t have to be the case. There is enough education and awareness about the dangers of drunk or drugged driving that there’s no excuse to get behind the wheel impaired. The human

Vanauley Street YMCA drop-in youth worker Karrie Kalloway, left, manager of youth outreach and innovation Jennifer White and youth worker Ryan Balan organize warm winter clothing for distribution during the Y’s 2015 clothing drive. The YMCA of Greater Toronto is currently holding its 2016 drive to help ensure young people living on the street can keep warmer this winter. Donations of good quality clothing are always welcome, and the demand in winter is huge. The most-needed clothing items include: coats, sweaters, boots, socks, hats, gloves, scarves, sweat pants and bedding. Non-perishable and nutritious food items such as pasta, canned goods, dried fruit and peanut butter are also in demand. "Last year was an amazing year for giving - we had at least 50 bags of donated clothing, and we went through it all," Smith said. "With this year’s clothing and food drive, we want to help even more youth both keep warm and get a healthy meal." The Vanauley Street Y serves roughly 200 homeless and street-involved youth aged 16 to 24 each month through its shelter, health care,
counselling, legal and housing support and other initiatives. More youth are expected to use the shelter as the weather gets colder. YMCA Sprott House offers transitional housing for 25 LGBTQ youth between the ages of 16 and 24. LGBTQ youth are disproportionately likely to find themselves living on the street, with the YMCA noting they make up between 20 and 40 per cent of the homeless youth population on a given night. Goods can be dropped off at the Vanauley Street YMCA (7 Vanauley St.), Central YMCA (20 Grosvenor St.), West End YMCA (931 College St.), and Cooper Koo YMCA (461 Cherry St.). Financial donations are also welcome at ymcagta.org/donate

The YMCA of Greater Toronto is reaching out to the public to ensure street-involved youth can keep warm, dry and fed this winter. To help support the estimated 2,000 youth who are homeless in Toronto and who often lack adequate winter wear, the Y is seeking various types of donations through an expanded clothing and food drive to serve the youth who benefit from programs at the Vanauley Street YMCA and YMCA Sprott House. "As the weather gets colder we see an increase in requests for coats, hats, boots, gloves, etc. from homeless and street-involved youth across our programs," said YMCA of Greater Toronto general manager of youth intervention and outreach Louise Smith.

Downtown Yonge BIA executive director Mark Garner poses for a photo, in front of a new 22-storey high music mural at 423 Yonge St., which commemorates Yonge Street’s musical history with portraits of great performers who played the venues that once lined the streets.
Can Toronto return to its former glory as a music city? Downtown Yonge BIA’s music strategy aims to bring the music back JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com To many Torontonians, Massey Hall is known as one of the city’s most iconic concert venues. For a whole generation, however, it’s one of the few remaining vestiges of a bygone era when Yonge Street made Toronto a true music city. That reputation could be making a comeback thanks to the efforts of the Downtown Yonge BIA (DYBIA), which is looking to recreate some of the area’s former glory. In the 1960s and ’70s, Downtown Yonge was a place where the finest rock, jazz and blues musicians gathered and performed not just at large venues but also at smaller locales such as the Town Tavern, the Bluenote, Le Coq d’Or and the Friar’s Tavern. The DYBIA and Heritage Toronto are in the process of recognizing
some of those former hot spots through heritage plaques, with the Town Tavern and the Bluenote the first two to earn such a distinction on Monday, Dec. 12. Along with walking tours, live music in public and a planned music incubator, the DYBIA aims to use the plaques to remember - and hopefully ring in the return of - Toronto Music City. "Yonge Street was the beating heart of Toronto’s musical and cultural scene (in the 1960s and ’70s,)" said DYBIA executive director Mark Garner. "The Town Tavern and the Bluenote . were just two of the beacons that were part of the Yonge music scene." Garner noted that his organization is looking to bring music back to Yonge Street through programs such as Play the Parks, adding that there are still plenty of great venues from the Hard Rock Café (on the site
of the former Friar’s Tavern), the Carlu, and Yonge-Dundas Square. The BIA has released a music strategy, which Garner described as a "cohesive strategy to bring Yonge Street back again to that original splendour of the scene and the vitality that it created for the City of Toronto." Indeed, the venues along Yonge, large and small, played host to a veritable who’s who of music 40 to 50 years ago. In addition to local stars such as Oscar Peterson, Gordon Lightfoot and Glenn Gould, international greats such as Billie Holiday, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross and Bill Haley and the Comets took the stage in various clubs. Bob Dylan first met Levon and the Hawks better known as The Band - in the Friar’s. Jay Jackson, a regular performer at the Bluenote, recalled those days fondly.
"The Bluenote had some real magic to it, especially for such a biscuit box of a club," he said. "You could only fit about 150 people in there, but everyone from the Supremes to Stevie Wonder, Wilson Pickett, the Righteous Brothers they’d finish their earning jobs at Massey Hall and wind up there. Anybody who was anybody wound up at the Bluenote." John Finley, who took the stage often at several Downtown Yonge venues, had similar recollections. "I used to sit in at the Friar’s with Levon and the Hawks, and there and at all those venues, you just felt like you were part of something special," he said. In 2017, the DYBIA is planning to take the next steps in its music strategy, which includes ramping up the heritage walks, which drew l See YONGE page 13
know the building’s in a bit of a state of disrepair, but we’re hoping to be able to use that site." The building, fittingly, is next to the Toronto Public Health building that is slated to house the iconic Sam the Record Man sign. Mayor John Tory is excited to see Toronto’s music scene revitalized. "The reason for putting (Toronto) into the pantheon of music cities is, first of all it’s an important industry
and (creates) a lot of jobs for artists, creative people associated with music depend on it," he said. "And in the most diverse city in the world, music is one of the greatest forms of inclusion." Whether Toronto can regain its musical identity has yet to be seen, but with a firm strategy in place and a strong will to get it done, Hogtown may well become the great music city it once was.

huge crowds this year, and adding to its Play the Parks initiative. Play the Parks involves lunchtime open air concerts at various outdoor venues in the area. "In its first year, Play the Parks brought in about 5,000 people," Garner noted. "Last year we had about 60,000 people show up," Garner said. New plaques will be added at Le Coq d’Or and the
Friar’s Tavern, joining plaques recently added to former venues in Toronto’s one-time folk music hub, Yorkville. The BIA also hopes to find a permanent base for its music incubator program to provide mentorship and promotion for upand-coming artists. "We’ve been trying to get into the building at 38 Dundas St. E. so we can have a home for the incubator program," Garner said. "We
