TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com When Keisha YoungHaecker’s son, Thomas, entered the world as a "micropreemie" at one pound, 14 ounces, gripping fear eclipsed the joy. Infection during her pregnancy induced labour at just 23 weeks. Thomas spent three-and-a-half months in a NICU incubator at Mount Sinai Hospital. Doctors forecasted a dark fate for the newborn. "Doctors said he would have severe cerebral palsy," Young-Haecker recalled. "They said he would be blind, couldn’t speak, and would be severely handicapped. The doctor said ’It’s cute going up and down the stairs when you have a little baby. But can you imagine having a 50-pound baby boy, who can’t do anything for himself, and you have to lift him up and down the stairs all the time?’ "And that was his way of telling us, maybe now is a good time to let him go. I wanted to prove him wrong. I was angry. How dare you tell me this is what is going to happen." The couple didn’t let go of their son. Thomas began intensive interventions when he arrived home at 10 months old, including osteopathy and physiotherapy that cost his parents $250 a week, and later, speech therapy and occupational therapy. Thomas wears leg splits and uses a wheelchair for distance. "Thomas is by no means severe," Young-Haecker said. "He still has his issues. As he gets older, the issues

Thomas Haecker, 4, shares a kiss with his mother Keisha Young-Haecker at home. Thomas has been approved for partial out-of-country OHIP coverage for a May 11 surgery called SDR (Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy), shown to eliminate spasticity in children with cerebral palsy. will get worse. He has tightness in his legs that causes him to be crouched, and he usually walks high on his toes." That doesn’t stop the little boy, who sits transfixed by his Mario Chase video game. Cerebral palsy is the most-frequent cause of physical disability in Canadian children, affecting two to 2.5 in 1,000 children every year, the Bloorview Research Institute reported. "About a year ago, his legs were so tight they were like pulling rubber bands. His legs were shaking in bed. He said ’It hurts,’" Young-Haecker said of lessening effective Botox treatments. A nurse, Young-Haecker began online research of a surgical procedure called Selective Dorsal Rhizoto-

my or SDR. American neurosurgeon Dr. T.S. Park pioneered SDR at St. Louis Children’s Hospital where it has been performed on more than 3,000 patients. In SDR, surgeons identify and electrically stimulate the dorsal spinal rootlet nerve fibres that cause spasticity in their transmission from the muscle to the spinal cord. Surgeons selectively cut the abnormal rootlets, leaving the normal rootlets intact. Young-Haecker approached Dr. Darcy Fehlings, who follows Thomas at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital’s spasticity clinic. Fehlings discussed Thomas’ case with Dr. James Drake, the head of neurosurgery at SickKids hospital. Drake is one of

two pediatric neurosurgeons in Ontario qualified to assess patients seeking out-of-country (OOC) SDR surgery. Thomas’ future changed. Last December, YoungHaecker opened a letter from the ministry approving Thomas’ OOC OHIP funding the same day her husband Corey read a letter from Park confirming Thomas for SDR surgery on May 11. "I called Corey. ’Thomas was approved for surgery.’ He said, ’How do you know?’ We were so super happy. We were excited to know Thomas’ life would be pain-free." Four-year-old Thomas is an "excellent candidate" for SDR surgery, Park said. "Thomas will be able to walk independently with

improved balance and endurance," Park wrote in the letter. "He will be able to participate in recreational activities and SDR will prevent future deterioration." Post-SDR surgery, Thomas’ spasticity will be permanently reduced, and his sitting and standing postures and comfort improved, Park said. Still, the Haeckers needed to raise $25,000 for possible post-SDR tendon-release surgery and equipment. They took out a line-ofcredit. Their GoFundMe Page (https://www.gofundme.com/thomasjourney) has surpassed $30,000. And they committed to Park to a year of daily physiotherapy post-SDR. But Young-Haecker is concerned about how and who is evaluated for OOC

OHIP coverage. "Ours was not as tough as struggle as that of some parents seeking out-ofcountry SDR. There shouldn’t be that discrepancy," she said. "Some parents can’t even get to see these two (evaluating) doctors because they’re told they’re out of the catchment area." The Ministry of Health "is not aware of any catchment area barriers that would exclude patients from obtaining services at either location (doctor)," ministry spokesperson David Jensen said in an email. The ministry has received 17 OOC prior-approval applications for patients seeking SDR in the U.S. since it began accepting applications October 2014; 11 of those were approved for OOC OHIP funding, Jensen said. The ministry is reviewing a proposal from the Toronto Local Health Integration Network and Holland Bloorview and SickKids Hospital to establish a joint SDR assessment/surgery/ rehab program in Ontario, he added. If approved, YoungHaecker urged the government to offer parents physio cost relief. "Even if Ontario does come up with a SDR program here, they need to come up with a structure for physio after surgery where parents don’t have to pay so much for physio for an entire year after," she said. Police post video appeal in unsolved murder Sharin Morningstar Keenan, 9, last seen talking to man in downtown park, January 1983 Police have posted a video appeal in the cold case abduction and murder of nine-year-old Sharin Morningstar Keenan. "Dead or alive, we’re looking for Dennis Melvin Howe," Det. Sgt. Stacy Gallant said in the video, which was posted to YouTube earlier this month. "We have his DNA. Someone knows where he is and we want to hear from you." Sharin was playing in Jean Sibelius park on Brunswick Avenue in the Annex neighbourhood and was seen speaking to a man shortly before 4 p.m., Jan. 23, 1983. When she didn’t come home, her parents searched the park but couldn’t find her. "Police were contacted and an all-out search commenced," Gallant, of the cold case section of the Toronto police homicide squad, said in the appeal. Just over a week later, on Feb. 1, officers conducting a door-to-door search found Sharin’s body in the refrigerator of a rooming house on Brunswick where Howe had rented a room.

Sharin had been sexually assaulted and strangled, police said. Howe, who would now be 76, is still wanted on a charge of first-degree murder. At the time of the murder, Howe was described as being 5’9" tall with brown eyes, a half inch scar under the left side of his chin, a crooked pinky finger, a scar on his right thumb and very bad teeth. He was left handed and had a small birthmark on his right breast area. "He often used the term turkeys when speaking about people and he liked to do needlepoint when he was in jail," Gallant said in the video. "He was the user of both alcohol and drugs as well as a heavy smoker. He may have difficulty hearing and may now require a hearing aid." Howe, who was born in Regina, Saskatchewan on Sept. 26, 1940, has a long criminal record. He had been released on mandatory supervision in 1982 from a Saskatchewan penitentiary where he spent almost 15 years for assaulting women and girls, police

said. His release was revoked when he fled the area. Howe got divorced in 1967 and didn’t have any children from that relationship. But police believe Howe did have a daughter during a common-law relationship two years after the divorce. Howe also had two brothers and two sisters, police said. Their parents are deceased. "To the nieces and nephews, or if you are the child of Dennis Melvin Howe, we want to hear from you," Gallant said. Police also released a series of composite images depicting how Howe would have looked over the years. The crime, which left the city on edge, was the city’s first homicide of 1983. Anyone with information is asked to contact the homicide squad at 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222TIPS (8477), online at 222tips.com or text TOR and your message to CRIMES (27467).

Homicide cold case investigators are searching for closure on a decades-old case that shook the city. Nine-year-old Sharin Morningstar Keenan (left) was found dead a week after she was abducted on January 23, 1983. Investigators are still looking for Dennis Melvin Howe, who would now be 76 years old.

immediate health needs. "I wasn’t going to let that happen to other people." As part of her research, she stumbled upon the American Trauma Society’s Trauma Survivors Network and brought the idea to St. Mike’s. The ATS is a leading organization for trauma care and injury prevention in the United States. "They really ran with it," smiled Harvey, who has also helped create a trauma survivors peer support drop-in at St. Mike’s. The new initiative kicked off this month. "I’m really excited to take on this new experience. This is helping me more than it has helped anyone so far," Harvey said. Amanda McFarlan, the trauma program registry manager and quality assurance specialist at St. Mike’s, said the hospital knew there were pieces missing for survivors of traumatic injuries and wanted to do more to help people live better. "We felt there was sort of a gap in our understanding of what happens to trauma patients once they leave the hospital," she said during a recent interview. "We help people in the short term but we really want to help improve their life in the long term." The new trauma survivors program at St. Mike’s

has been named My BeST (Beyond Surviving to Thriving). "This is really an opportunity for trauma survivors to connect with one another," McFarlan said, expressing her appreciation to Harvey for approaching St. Mike’s, the first Canadian hospital to join the ATS’ network of peer support groups, with this idea. Aside from helping start a new trauma survivor’s network and drop-in at St. Mike’s, Harvey has also recently completed a fourday course on chronic pain management at the South Riverdale Community Health Centre. She’s now a certified peer leader and will be helping others learn more about how to better manage their pain. As her wellness improves, Harvey said she hopes to get more involved in advocating for safer streets. In the meantime, she’s enjoying spending quality time with her sons Andrew, 9, and Paul, 10, and her husband Peter, who runs his own catering and event planning business, PG Harvey Events. Margaret Harvey has been to hell and back and lived to tell the tale. On Nov. 13, 2012, the then-38 year old married mother of two was riding her bike near Gerrard and Yonge streets to attend a work meeting when she was struck and run over by a garbage truck. The crash crushed her pelvis, caused massive internal bleeding, and resulted in months of painful rehabilitation. Harvey now lives with chronic pain, which she is working to manage. Needless to say, the traumatic injury has significantly altered the course of her life and has had significant impacts on her mental and emotional health. "This trauma changed my life forever," Harvey shared during a recent interview at an east-end café, near where she lives. "My life is now different but I don’t think of that as a bad thing." Harvey’s near-death experience also resulted in a stressful and hard-fought legal battle, which only wrapped up in January 2016. "Finally I’m starting to get healthy," said Harvey, a North York native who has lived near Pape and Danforth avenues since 2004. She only started sharing her story publicly a year ago. Now that she’s able to focus on moving forward with her life, Harvey is devoting some of her energy to helping improve the lives of others who have gone through similar experiences. "Now I feel like I’m in a position where I’ve got my life together enough that I can give some hope to other people," said Harvey, who said one of the most difficult aspects of going through a traumatic injury was accessing the resources she needed to live well and better navigate the system once she got past her

ABOUT US

Community hospitals need your support Next week marks Community Hospital Week in our city – a week designated to help spread awareness of all that happens in these hospitals right in our own backyards. These health-care institutions are centres of innovation, teaching facilities and the place we go for countless health-care needs. Many of us know the emergency department well, but do you know they also offer highly specialized care? Internationally recognized programs and expert physicians and staff help put Canada’s health-care system at the front of the pack. The contributions of our community hospitals in achieving this can’t be taken for granted. That’s why Metroland Media Toronto has partnered with Humber River Hospital, North York General Hospital, St. Joseph’s Health Centre and Scarborough and Rouge Hospital to promote the special awareness week. These hospitals are there for us throughout every stage of our lives, but they need a little help from us to continue to deliver high-quality patient care. While the cost of hospital operations is funded by the Ontario government, helping to create access to some of the best health care in the world, the province asks the community to participate by supporting equipment needs and a portion of capital renovations. Many people don’t know that the government only covers a hospital’s operating expenses, leaving the costs of new medical equipment and building for the hospital to cover – and that’s where you can come in. Hospitals count on the generosity of donors to fund a whole host of things that make a difference in the individualized care provided by health-care specialists in your hospital, close to home. Your support helps with the purchase of new X-ray machines so doctors can diagnose your child’s broken arm, finance renovations to birthing suites so new moms can bring life to our communities, expanding emergency services so that they’re available when your family needs it most, and much more. Gala dinners, planned giving, golf tournaments, corporate grants, raffles, silent auctions, and individual monthly and annual gifts are just a few ways hospital foundations work with the public to raise funds to support health care in your community. It’s not easy to ask for help, but it’s easy to make a difference in the health care in your community. During this Community Hospitals Week and throughout the year, consider offering your support to your hospital.

East York pride can survive new boundaries East York is dead, yet it’s still with us. Next year will be 20 years since the province pushed six unwilling cities together, and East York – that borough on the Don River – was one. The spirit of East York hangs on, though; in sports leagues, legion halls, its historical society and garden club. The old civic centre is still there, and East York’s politicians don’t let residents forget. But now comes a new challenge: East York will take territory from North York. Ward boundaries designed to last Toronto the next four elections – Toronto council passed a bylaw establishing them last month – have "really torn apart the traditional boundaries of East York,"

MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto says Janet Davis, a councillor there for 14 years. Our 44 wards were created in 2000, when the megacity was new. But with 400,000 more Torontonians flooding into downtown and wherever else condos bloom, council opted for 47 wards. You’ll have to learn new ward numbers. The plan means more representation from down-

memorabilia online - after East York, the municipality, ceased to be. The plan’s also notable for what it doesn’t change. Etobicoke, beyond the Humber River, stays intact, though a councillor there, Justin DiCiano, is appealing the redistribution anyway. Victoria Park Avenue remains the wall beyond which Scarborough lies. An earlier option divided the Beach, merging one of its wards with southwestern Scarborough. That was enough to get residents on both sides of Victoria Park angry. In Toronto, our dead former cities are tough to kill. Reach Edges columnist Mike Adler at madler@insidetoronto.com

town, a bit more new blood. It also means East York wards north of the Danforth absorb parts of North York west of the Don Valley. Paula Fletcher, council veteran from nearby Riverdale, bluntly says the boundary plan "completely disrespects East York as a legacy city." People have communities and they’re attached to them, Fletcher adds. "I think that’s important that we honour that, not carve it up." Davis, however, says she’s trying to be positive about the change. She’ll work even harder to keep East York pride, and identity, going. That identity is strong, she insists, in a generation calling themselves East Yorkers - some trading

like-minded individuals and find a way to channel their stress into positive outcomes. "For me, as a young person, hip hop was a good way to deal with the stress in my life," said Prosserman, a noted hip hop dancer in the city in his youth. "My mom was battling through some serious health challenges and (hip hop) was like a reset button for my life when things got to be too much. I also brought a great group of friends into my life." Unity provides afterschool and community programs across the GTA and is tracking their impact on participants’ mental health. Prosserman noted that many of the benefits the charity offers have been linked to better mental health and life outcomes. "Things like having an adult role model, feeling

like you’re part of a community and having positive ways to express your stress are all so important," he said. "We’re getting more sophisticated in finding ways to measure how these things are impacting (participants) and a lot of them have gone on to have a lot of success in their lives." With 23 programs taking place once a week, each catered to the needs to the community in which it’s located, Unity helps upwards of 300 young people on a regular basis. With 10 years under its belt, the charity is now looking to grow partnerships with community centres and community agencies to grow its impact. "We want to leverage the skills we offer with our partners," Prosserman said. "Hip hop’s a mechanism to engage a group of young people who might not otherwise get engaged."

In addition to providing programming, the charity holds an annual Unity Festival, giving participants a chance to showcase the skills they’ve honed and shine a light on young people’s creativity. With a decade of good work behind it, Prosserman and others at Unity are now getting set to look ahead at what the coming years bring. Now 31, the organization’s founder may no longer qualify as a youth, but he remains passionate about both hip hop and improving the lives of others. "After 10 years, it’s an opportunity to self-reflect on what we’ve accomplished and where we want to go over the next 10 years," he said. Unity Charity will celebrate 10 years with a special event at Wychwood Barns ArtScape on Saturday, April 29. For more information, visit www.unitycharity.com
