Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life manager Chris Graham places memorial luminaries on the rock in Village of Yorkville Park during the Society’s Celebration of Life event.

Celebration of Life raises cancer awareness Luminary lighting ceremony a lead-up to Relay for Life fundraiser JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com The Village of Yorkville Park was lit up in honour of those who

have lost their lives to cancer and those who continue to battle the disease last Thursday as the Canadian Cancer Society held a Celebration of Life event in the downtown open space. The Celebration of Life saw members of the public invited to light luminaries - candles in special bags that participants were invited to decorate in honour of loved ones - and served to spread the word about the Canadian

Cancer Society’s signature Relay for Life fundraiser. "We do a number of events leading up to Relay for Life," said event spokesperson Chris Graham. "Tonight, we’re giving people a chance to remember those they love who have fought cancer while making a donation." While steady rain meant the Village of Yorkville Park was emptier than usual, the Celebration of Life nonetheless managed

to raise funds and awareness of the Canadian Cancer Society’s work and the Relay for Life fundraiser. "The weather’s been interesting, to say the least, but we’ve still managed to talk to a good number of people tonight," Graham said. Graham added that the Celebration of Life events are a rela-

HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com Sitting vacant and having been decommissioned for decades, the Wellington destructor will be given a second chance at life. The City of Toronto has put the wheels in motion to bring the former largerthan-life garbage incinerator back from the dead with new uses for the neighbourhood. The surrounding community is collecting ideas for what the site might look like one day. Breweries, coffee shops, art galleries and educational/innovation hubs were thrown around the room during a community brainstorming session held last week by Coun. Mike Layton (Ward 19 Trinity-Spadina) at St. Mary’s elementary school. "I want to help make sure the city is breathing new life into that building, and we need partners and we need people with ideas to help, and this is the

start," Layton told The Villager. Transforming the destructor into a destination, not just for neighbouring residents but for people outside of Toronto, is something the city hopes is realized with the redevelopment. That means making sure it’s a revenue generator for the city. One major hurdle for the project is money, according to Layton. Although no price tag is attached to the redevelopment, the councillor believes it will be expensive, coupled with the challenge of keeping costs low for the community. According to heritage architect Don Loucks, who sat on the meeting’s panel, another challenge is to keep the community engaged at all stages. "That’s where you start, with the community. It has to work for them first, whether that takes shape as a daycare, a YMCA, library or an art space ... It’s got to start at the community, be-

cause they’re the people that are going to use it," Loucks told The Villager. The site on Wellington Street West (just east of Strachan Avenue), which is at least 31,700 sq. ft, was

built in 1925 and used as a solid waste incinerator until the mid-1970s, when it became a waste transfer station. It was then decommissioned in the 1980s and has remained vacant ever

since. "There was no energy to go ahead and work toward repurposing the building. So, when we did the South Niagara Planning Study review, this site stood out,"

Layton said. "It’s an enormous site that was sitting there, not contributing, and I think everyone saw the potential in it. We just needed to light a little fire under real estate and the city to say, ’let’s do something here.’ It’s taken a couple years to get us here, but it’s heading in an exciting direction." Layton told the crowd the site will be an "economic engine" and green space will surround the venue for use by the community. Residents also won’t have to fear further intensification in the neighbourhood, because residential use is prohibited on site. "We have the opportunity to build something really cool and I want to see the crazy, wacky visioning stuff. I want to see what people come up with," the councillor said. PETS AND ANIMALS

Toronto Pig Save co-founder awaits verdict Anita Krajnc faces mischief charge for feeding water to thirsty pigs JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com

resonated with anyone who understands if someone’s thirsty, you should give them water whether they have two legs or four legs," she said. "The golden rule applies to all animals." One expert noted that the pigs were panting at 180 breaths per minute and were in severe distress when Krajnc gave them water. Because pigs don’t have sweat glands, the heat inside the truck would have been more difficult for them to deal with than it would have been for humans or dogs. "If you saw dogs sweltering in a truck, you would want to help them and pigs are no different," Krajnc said. "Pigs are self-aware, sentient beings with the intelligence of four-year-old children. You would obviously not let children suffer like that." Krajnc added that she was surprised by the attention her case has garnered

and by the support she has received. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has rallied behind her, as have many other animal rights activists and good Samaritans. She feels the case will serve to draw attention to the treatment animals often when they are being farmed for food or shipped to the slaughterhouse. "I would hope reason and justice prevail and the judge rules that compassion should never be illegal," she said. "But more than that, I hope this is the start of a bigger case where we start using the law to help the vulnerable, and using the law to give pigs personhood status." Krajnc’s verdict will be handed down in a Milton courthouse on Thursday. The social media hashtags #pigtrial and #compassionisnotacrime were beginning to trend leading up to the trial date.

Graham Paine/Metroland

Animal rights activist Anita Krajnc was back in Burlington court for the continuation of her ’ Pig Trial’ , which stems from her giving water to hogs in June 2015 on their way to slaughter. Krajnc was joined by a few dozen Pig Save supporters and the founder and president of PETA Ingrid Newkirk out front the court house. Here, defendant Anita Krajnc makes her way into court, surrounded by supporters.

Nearly two years after she was first brought up on charges for feeding water to thirsty pigs, animal activist Anita Krajnc is set to face a verdict in her court case. Krajnc was charged with criminal mischief for giving water to pigs locked in a truck bound for the slaughterhouse in June of 2015. Since then, her case has gained international attention, with the downtown Toronto resident saying she feels the animal agriculture business is on trial as much as she is. With a verdict expected

on Thursday, May 4, Krajnc feels confident that she will be exonerated. "I’m feeling pretty good about it," she said. "I don’t see this case as a judgment on what I did as it is a judgment on how pigs are viewed. Are they property or are they persons?" That distinction stands as the crux of the case. The Crown has argued that the pigs were the property of Van Boekel Farms and that by giving them water, Krajnc was interfering with property. Krajnc, a co-founder of animal activist group Toronto Pig Save, said her case has brought a number of experts to the fore who have spoken out against the treatment animals face when being farmed or shipped for slaughter. She admits to being surprised by the support she has garnered for her simple act of kindness. "I think the issue has

tively new addition to the Canadian Cancer Society’s stable of fundraising initiatives. The Village of Yorkville Park event was the only one planned for downtown Toronto, and volunteers hoped to use it as a means of spreading the word about the Relay for Life. "That’s our biggest

event," Graham said. "It’s a team walking event - a six-hour event in the evening - where people get to cheer on cancer survivors who make a victory lap and then walk the track themselves." Relay for Life also has a luminary ceremony where participants can light a candle in honour of loved ones who have lost their lives to cancer, or in

support of those still fighting. This year’s Toronto Relay for Life will take place on Friday, June 16 from 6 p.m. to midnight in Downsview Park. It will be one of hundreds of similar events raising funds for cancer research, cancer prevention and public education regarding the illness. For more information, visit www.relayforlife.ca

Tory, Wynne escalate passive aggressiveness The mutual acts of passive aggression between the provincial Liberals and the Mayor of Toronto continued to escalate this week - as not coincidentally, the implications of Kathleen Wynne’s penultimate budget before the elections in 2018 continued to sink in across the city. Wynne’s budget taken on its own was a good shot at redemption for a government that seemed out of options. It is balanced thanks to a robust economy, and offers up some real benefits to be enjoyed across a broad swathe of youthful voters. Pharma-Care for Ontarians under 25, tougher rent controls and a foreign buyer’s tax to maybe make housing more affordable ... If anything can get out the elusive under-25 tenant vote, this just might. Fix public housing and fund transit expansion? Not this time, the premier has decided. So on Sunday, Mayor To-

DAVID NICKLE The City ry moseyed on over to Etobicoke North, to give Liberal MPP Shafiq Qaadri something to worry about besides a possible 2018 challenge from former local councillor and mayoral candidate Doug Ford. He knocked on doors, shook his head at the state of disrepair of public housing, and handed out flyers that, coincidentally I am sure, had the same red, white and blue colour scheme of the traditional Ford family election material. The next day, he had Progressive Conservative lead-

er Patrick Brown over to City Hall for a chat, and a duet heaping more shame on the Wynne government for such an egregious snub of Toronto’s infrastructure needs. Steven Del Duca, Ontario’s Transportation Minister, was literally waiting for reporters in the hall - to tell us that Tory had crossed a sort of line, going to Etobicoke North and campaigning against a Liberal as he did. Liberal Peter Milzcyn, a former city councillor now representing Etobicoke Lakeshore, reminded us that Progressive Conservatives don’t have a great record on funding transit and housing in Toronto. Best to settle in for the long haul: another year at least, and who knows how much longer if they both get re-elected.

• OUR VIEW •

ABOUT US

Ontario one correction away from a debt crisis The Kathleen Wynne government turned the fiscal page Thursday and introduced a balanced budget, and if you listened carefully you could hear the congratulatory backslapping from Toronto all the way to Port Severn. It was 10 years ago when Ontario ran balanced budgets in 2006 and 2007, but that gave way to $20-billion-a-year deficits in 2008 and 2009 when the economy tanked and the Grits had no choice but to hand the auto industry a $3.3 billion lifeline, or face the collapse of auto manufacturing in Ontario. At the time, then premier Dalton McGuinty made a promise to balance the budget by 2017, and while the Liberals should be commended for getting their budget in order, there’s a bogeyman lurking in the province’s balance sheet. The provincial debt for this fiscal year is expected to hit $312 billion, and in a recent meeting with Metroland Media editors, Senior Economist with RBC Robert Hogue said "tough medicine" is needed to tackle the debt. "Debt has increased quite significantly and debt to GDP is running at 40 per cent," he said. In 2016/17, the province expects to spend $11.4 billion on interest payments on that debt. That’s nearly $1 billion a month just to service existing debt, and in case you need to be reminded, that coin comes from your pocket. To put it in terms we can all relate to, every person in Ontario would need to pony up $22,000 to pay off the debt. Hogue said this massive debt leaves the province without a rainy day fund in the event the economy slows to a point requiring stimulus spending, and if interest rates rise, as expected they will, the interest payments on the debt would skyrocket. We agree with Hogue when he says it’s time the province create a plan to tackle the debt by creating a "hard target for debt to GDP ratio" that sits much lower than where we are now. However, we didn’t get that Thursday. What we did get was a desperate Liberal government waving costly carrots in voters’ faces. The Wynne government’s shopping list includes a drug plan for those under 24 costing $465 million a year and $200 million next year to increase affordable licensed child care spaces. Noble programs for sure, but not at a time when the province continues to add about $10 billion a year in new debt as long as they hold power, and if the Wynne government continues to spend like drunken sailors on shore leave - generations of Ontario residents will be buried under a mountain of debt from which they may never escape.

Toronto Tamils ready to rebuild their homeland In a Scarborough banquet hall, I realized the civil war in Sri Lanka is truly over. Greater Toronto’s Tamil people came here because of that war. They’re the largest Tamil diaspora outside Sri Lanka, and helped make Scarborough, Markham and Richmond Hill what they are today. They came from a country where they felt the majority hated them, discriminated against them, and in many cases tried to kill them. The war ended in 2009 with scenes of horror, as trapped civilians and fighters died by the thousands. Twenty business owners from our Tamil community returned to Sri Lanka in March. They came back calling on others to rebuild

At their press conference, the business owners were candid. Both sides, they say, feel guilty about the war. They know it was a terrible mistake. "We, the diasporas, were the ones that helped fund the war for 35 years," adds Stan Muthulingam, the group’s co-chairperson. Certainly, justice must be done for any atrocities suffered by Tamils in Sri Lanka. But those who made the trip say reconstruction and development are needed now, and the island’s government needs investors. Eventually, war ends. Desire for revenge starts to end. lected in Scarborough and Markham for the Tamil Tigers and their breakaway state. Local businesses gave willingly, or unwillingly. The war was merciless. Here, thousands waved the Tiger flag at rallies or carried banners demanding a Tiger-led Tamil Eelam. No compromise seemed possible. In 2009, bombs were falling on aunts and cousins back home. Protesters in Toronto blocked the Gardiner Expressway. Afterwards, Tamils here elected a "transnational government" to keep the fight going. But Sri Lanka’s government changed in 2015. Separatist voices died away. Compromise, that most Canadian of values, has taken hold.
