SoHo House union drive fails MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Employees at SoHo House Toronto, one of the city’s most exclusive clubs, voted this month on whether to join a union. The pro-union side failed to win the vote. With an invitation-only membership, the Adelaide Street West club - patterned on the original SoHo House in London - is a gathering spot for actors, architects, filmmakers, and athletes. Prince Harry, for instance, has been there with his girlfriend Meghan Markle. "Raptors players are in there, Blue Jays players are in there," said Ernesto Espinoza, a line cook who said despite serving society’s elites, staff are "being treated like we work at a McDonald’s." The decision to contact Unite Here Local 75 and schedule the certification vote for 70 employees triggered plenty of arguments and, some say, threats from management to close if the union wasn’t rejected. Surfing enthusiasts take to the waves of Lake Ontario year-round

| City Centre Mirror | Thursday, May 11, 2017

SURF’S UP! PHOTOGRAPHY BY JUSTIN GREAVES Larry Cavero could never have imaged surfing the freezing Great Lakes when he first started surfing at age seven in his home country of Peru. But after moving to Canada and discovering the possibilities, he’s opened a new door to his favourite sport. Whether it’s -20C and hailing or the wind is gusting more than 50 kilometres per hour, you can find Cavero ripping up the surf along the Toronto shoreline. Cavero is one of the main organizers leading the surfing community in Ontario. He started Surf Dreams Canada, a local surf store which organizes events like beach cleanups and other environmental awareness events. On top of connecting aspiring surfers with gear and know how, Cavero is always keeping an eye on the weather forecast for rideable waves across Ontario. Surfers use websites specific for determining the size and direction of the waves.

NEW

Hearing Aid Technology

Finally a hearing aid that allows you to hear in all directions! This latest digital technology solves the biggest challenge for hearing aid wearers – hearing well in noisy environments. Traditional hearing aids only allow the wearer to hear in one direction, which can make it difficult to hear in a public setting like a restaurant. Now with this new breakthrough technology, the wearer can enjoy a dynamic soundscape and differentiate between speech and noise. Nobody will notice it because of its minute size, fitting snugly and comfortably just behind the ear. Everything works automatically, so you can get back to enjoying your relationships, rather than thinking about your hearing.

DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com The Toronto Birth Centre celebrated its 1,000th delivery since it opened in January 2014 and announced it is getting new funding that will allow it to bring more babies into the world each year. Previous funding allowed it to provide birthing services to 450 patients each year. An additional $175,000 in yearly funding from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care will increase services to 525 yearly patients. The funding will allow the centre to expand other services as well. The 1,000th baby was delivered April 19. The celebration and funding announcement happened Friday, April 28. Cheryllee Bourgeois, a Cree-Metis midwife, project co-lead for the birth centre and president of its board, said the facility hadn’t yet needed to turn away clients,

but it was getting close to its funded limit. The facility, one of three in Ontario, was established by the coming together of the midwifery and indigenous health communities. It followed decades of work, first separate by the midwifery and indigenous communities, which later came together. When Ontario’s Liberal government announced it would fund birth centres, the separate groups came together and worked on building this one. Facilities such as this are critical to the health of indigenous communities, Bourgeois said. "There are such big health disparities, in terms of outcomes for indigenous and nonindigenous people," she said. "We also know through many different kinds of research, focus groups and reports that have come out, there is still a systemic problem with racism and trying to access

Natalie Tregaskiss holds her six-month-old son Barrington Tregaskiss-Crichton at the celebration for the 1000th baby born in the Toronto Birth Centre. health care, with issues around trying to get birth closer to home, issues of people having to be evacuated for birth - people having to leave their communities to be able to give birth." Bourgeois said the Toronto Birth Centre model could be replicated to a

much smaller scale in communities across the province. It would allow more people to give birth close to home at centres run by midwives. "When you take birth out of a small community, the thing that’s left for people to come together is real-

ly for people dying. It’s not only about good birth outcomes - although it does have a lot to do with that but it’s also about being able to build a healthy community," Bourgeois said. The birth centre prides itself on providing a homelike and comfortable set-

ting. "There is not the whole institution feeling of going to a hospital and having that kind of birth experience," executive director Roberta Pike said. "Families can bring as many support people as they want to the birth here and we’re really building a community focus." While indigenous families can already perform smudging ceremonies at a hospital, at the birth centre they are able to perform it without having to go through any onerous permissions processes. Families of other cultural origins are also welcome to bring in their traditional practices to the birth event. The Toronto Birth Centre is at 525 Dundas St. E., in Toronto’s Regent Park neighbourhood. It draws clients from across Toronto. For more information, visit www.torontobirthcentre.ca

ABOUT US

It’s time to celebrate our everyday heroes In a world often dominated by depressing headlines, inconsequential information and political movements that drive apart rather than bring people together, it’s refreshing to be able to take pause and celebrate something special. This year, we’ve got the Urban Hero Awards to look forward to again. And in all honesty, all the staff at Metroland Media Toronto can’t wait. The program is designed to be accessible to everyone in our city – you, your neighbour, that kid down the street who helps the elderly, teachers, social workers, volunteers – anyone can be an Urban Hero. That’s the beauty of it. It’s an awards program designed to recognized the average people in our communities who do great things, in their own way. For our readers in Etobicoke, North York and Scarborough, you’ll remember the awards program from previous years. But this time around, we’re launching with a new look, a slightly new awards process and nominations are open across the entire city. All this, in time for Canada’s 150th celebrations because we thought, what better way to celebrate what it means to be Canadian, by honouring the people that make a difference in the lives of others? Help us out by considering who you know that makes that difference. We’re looking for nominations in the categories of Arts, Business, Education, Environment, Good Neighbour, Health, Social Issues and Sports. Within each category the awards will recognize the ’Titans of Tomorrow’ (Youth 14-18), and the ’Champions of Today’ (Adults 19+). You can nominate someone today, but only until June 11. After we receive and confirm all nominations we’ll be launching an online public voting process, which will determine eight ’people’s choice’ Urban Hero winners. Another eight finalists will be selected by our staff, and the whole group celebrated at a reception later this year. Most recipients are modest about the impact they make, but it’s even more reason to give them the recognition they deserve. They may not be used to the spotlight, but what they do will no doubt serve as inspiration for others. These awards are a special opportunity to tell some really good news stories and demonstrate the strength of the good will that exists in Canada and here at home in our city. Go online to www.urbanheroes.ca to nominate someone or to learn more.

What if Toronto just gives TCHC away? Toronto Community Housing Corporation – (TCHC) – will shut 7,500 apartments in five years unless it gets $1.7 billion. And it probably won’t. Not from the city, not from Ottawa or Queen’s Park. Though Mayor John Tory says it’s reasonable, and a "moral imperative," to split that repair backlog three ways, expecting those governments to do it is a bad bet. At a TCHC highrise in Scarborough Village – newsworthy in 2015, when brick cladding on one side suddenly slid off – Tory sounded like a man convinced he’s doing all he can to fix something before chucking it into the street. True, the province’s budget is out, without new money for social housing,

MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto but it’s not too late, Tory said. City taxpayers can’t pay, Tory argued, since that will mean double-digit increases forcing seniors out of their homes. "Property taxes were never meant to fund multibillion-dollar capital projects," he said, a bit rich from the guy backing up the Scarborough subway with a dedicated tax.

and accountability. Tory suggested Toronto City Council will get recommendations this month on the possible transfers. If that works, why stop? But the city owns many old and failing buildings, like the highrise Tory visited last week, which it couldn’t transfer to anyone, except the dubious property managers already running them on TCHC’s behalf. Eventually, there will be no answer except demolition. That part sounds like a huge failure for this city, with our shelters full and need ever-growing. But that’s where we’re headed. Tory wants another term, and the issue risks becoming depressing for him. Should he actually secure the funds, other TCHC buildings will require repairs to stay open. It won’t end. So, here’s a prediction for a three-way split: one third of TCHC’s 58,000 units will go to charities, one third will become cooperatives, and one third will be torn down. Tory’s TCHC task force suggested sending 5,000 units to a co-op board called New Home, and 5,000 to nonprofits who already have housing. He’s sold on the idea. Big corporations – he used to run one – are "very unwieldy," he said, and breaking them up produces greater local autonomy

Parents of students at John Fisher Public School were hoping to hear their children’s fate by late Tuesday afternoon. The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) has been working with parents and the developers the KG Group - to determine whether they could sufficiently mitigate risk

to staff and students at the school as KG Group builds a 35-storey rental apartment building next door. If so, the school would continue as normal, albeit with additional safety measures in place. Otherwise, the students could have to be moved to Vaughan Road Academy. A recent study offered

14 recommendations that should be followed to ensure student safety, and both the TDSB and the developer have committed to risk-lowering measures. Still, the school’s fate remained undecided as of The Mirror’s deadline. For updates, visit www.insidetoronto.com/ citycentre-toronto-on

CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com For Toronto resident Ellen Sturm, last week’s news reports of a possible evacuation of Toronto Island residents brought back a flood of fond childhood memories. It was the spring of 1952, and Sturm’s family had just arrived from Germany a few months earlier to set up house in an old army barracks at Hanlan’s Point when the rains came - and kept coming and coming. The flood waters that resulted from that deluge, she recalled, uprooted large trees, left the lakeshore a mess, and brought schools of large carp into their Toronto Island neighbourhood. "Attending the local public school was a challenge for my little sister, Hella, because the carp had invaded the sidewalks and she was afraid to be knocked over," Sturm, who was 12 at the time, laughed. "But my brother Bert, who was 10 and quite good at construction, found a bunch of boards around and built himself a raft so he could go out and spike those fish for dinner." The carp, said Sturm, who now lives in Toronto’s west-end Thistletown neighbourhood, became a major staple of the family’s diet over the course of the two to three weeks it took for the flood waters to finally subside from the front steps of their home. "Before long, my father invited people from the mainland who thought it was very exciting to visit us over there, and my mother offered them these muddy tasting carps," she recalled. "We were quite happy when they finally disappeared, because that’s all we ate for weeks - fish soup, fish cakes, fried fish, jellied fish. They didn’t taste that terrific, but it was a source of food for us at a time we were struggling." Sturm’s father, Dr. W. Goegginger, was a Lutheran minister from Latvia

Submitted photos

Top: Sturm’s brother Bert, then 10, is pictured here in a raft he built during the Toronto Island floods of 1952. Bottom: Ellen Sturm, 12, (centre) and her brother Bert, 10, (right) are pictured here with a large carp they caught on the steps of their Hanlan’s Point home during the floods. who didn’t speak a word of English when he decided to flee the coming communists in Germany in December 1951. Before he founded St. George’s Lutheran Church on College Street, his family of five survived on just the $6 a day Sturm’s mother made as a domestic. So, the flood waters of the spring of 1952 - and the cache of carp they brought with them - came at a fortuitous time. "It was our first spring in Canada, and for us, it was just another adventure," Sturm said, noting that, at the time, there were no deliveries of sand

bags nor any talk of evacuation. "For us as kids, it was actually quite exciting because it was something to do. Nowadays people are so careful, but we didn’t feel threatened by it and we didn’t complain. We were quite happy - we had enough to eat and we were together." A Canadian government webpage on ’Flooding Events in Canada’ did flag the year 1952, noting that problems of flooding and erosion in the Great Lakes have been the most severe when water levels have been high, "notably in 1952, 1972-73 and 1985-87."

Take a Drake-themed downtown walking tour Jurassic Park, CN Tower and Drake-owned restaurant Frings included JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com After helping to raise Toronto’s profile internationally, world-renowned rapper Drake will be the focal point of a new walking tour through downtown Toronto. Drake fans Ellie Geronikolos, Eleni Nico and Stephanie Chong are set to start up new Drakethemed tours of the downtown core, hitting such locales as the Raptors’ tailgate party zone Jurassic Park, the CN Tower (as featured on Drake’s album "Views"), Graffiti Alley, and Drake-

owned restaurant Frings. The trio came up with the idea for the walking tour when they saw the interest in Drake all around the world. "When we would travel and people would find out we’re from Toronto, they would always ask a lot of questions about Drake, like, ’Do you know the building on his album cover?’" Geronikolos said. "We thought it would be cool to help people see our city through the landmarks he helped make famous." While Toronto has been home to plenty of celebrities over the years, few have made a point of celebrating their city as much as Drake, noted Nico. "I can’t think of any artists who have made the kind of references to the city that he’s made." While the tour is geared toward Drake fans, the Tours of the 6ix founders said a love of

Drizzy’s music is definitely not a prerequisite as they worked to create a tour that would appeal to anyone. "We just asked ourselves, if we had a friend coming to Toronto for the weekend, where would we take them?" Nico said. Of course, hosting a walking tour also takes research, and Geronikolos, Nico and Chong did their research to learn facts and figures behind the hot spots on the tour and the city as a whole. In addition to pointing out trendy and popular spots, the trio also made a point of finding spots that were highly Instagrammable. "We put in a lot of hard work to try to do the city justice," Geronikolos said. "We wanted to make sure we were giving people something they couldn’t find on other walking tours." were pressured to vote no. "When they found out we’re doing this - boom." SoHo House Toronto didn’t respond to requests for comment. Espinoza recalled the campaign to unionize started after an incident last Au-

Another cook, who doesn’t want to be identified, said he saw the man faint. "They kept the place open," he said Wednesday. "It says they’d rather make money than take care of their people."

The man said he enjoys working at SoHo House, but it’s hard to live in Toronto on what it pays dishwashers and cooks. An employee who works in the front of the house, and who also wants to stay anonymous, said he’s been

threatened over the union. "It’s crazy there right now." The man agreed with the drive’s goals and thought many of the club’s famous clients would sympathize. "A lot of them are huge advocates for equality and the rights of different groups."

The film, ’Sanctuary’, will be part of the ReelAbilities Film Festival, which runs May 10-18 at the Miles Nadal JCC. The festival shines a light on deaf and disability cultures.

Film Festival celebrates ’Reel Abilities’ JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com While the Toronto International Film Festival may boast glitz and big-name celebrities, it - and other Toronto film fests - could stand to learn something from one of the newer names on the festival circuit. The ReelAbilities Film Festival (RAFF) is returning to the Miles Nadal JCC for the second year, screening top-flight movies that deal with, or were created by, people with disabilities and Deaf artists. RAFF started out in New York in 2007, eventually making its way north of the border last year. In addition

to showcasing films by and about people with disabilities, the festival offers truly accessible screenings to shows - something other film festivals can’t claim. "We have open captioning (to assist the deaf and hard of hearing), discussion panels with ASL (American Sign Language), and there’s audio description of films for people with vision loss," said Liviya Mendelsohn, who serves as ReelAbilities Toronto’s artistic director and the Miles Nadal JCC’s manager of accessibility and inclusion. While many of the films on display have been screened at other RAFF events, most are making their Canadian première,

with a couple of world premières also on the bill. There was also a focus on making sure there was Canadian content for ReelAbilities Toronto. A special free Family Film and Arts Day will take place at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 13. Along with accessible screenings of family-friendly films, the event will also feature arts and crafts, storytelling, model city-building, face painting, live music and a stop motion animation workshop. RAFF runs from Wednesday, May 10 through Thursday, May 18. For more information, visit www.toronto.reelabilities.org

Fundraiser for diabetes diabetes treatment. The fund was named for Francesco Grosso, son of Cadillac Lounge owner Sam Grosso, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of two. Through the Hospital for Sick Children, the fund has helped more than 120 families cover diabetes-related costs such as insulin,

syringes, meals and other critical items. Many diabetes management tools are not covered by OHIP, and can cost families up to $5,000 per year. The event will take place at the Cadillac Lounge, 1296 Queen St. W., from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, May 13. Tickets are $40 online or $50 at the door.
