Adam Zivo is bringing back his #LOVEISLOVEISLOVE LGBTQ+ photo project to this year’s Toronto Pride festivities. Launched last year in Toronto in response to the Orlando Pulse nightclub mass shooting in June 2016, the goal of the project is to normalize LGBTQ+ relationships by producing positive images of them, Zivo said, adding the photos are then distributed to participants through social media. #LOVEISLOVEISLOVE will set up shop Saturday, June 17 and Sunday, June 18 at VillageFest, a community-oriented LGBTQ+ festival organized by the Church Wellesley Village BIA.

The Toronto-based photographer is also behind the "They’re People, Not Terrorists" social media campaign featuring people from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen, which he created earlier this year in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed migration ban. The Mirror caught up with Zivo to talk about this year’s #LOVEISLOVEISLOVE project, and what his goals are for it. Q: This is the second year for the #LOVEISLOVEISLOVE photography project. What’s new this year? A: This year I’ve decided to include an educational element to the project. I’ve partnered with the Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity to produce brochures explaining the history of Pride festivals, and we will be distributing them both at our booth and throughout VillageFest, which is hosting us this year. This project has proven to be popular in the community, so I want to use it as a platform to draw attention to other organizations and raise awareness about specific issues. We chose the history of Pride festivals since queer youth aren’t always informed about the context of their rights, which is something that ought to be changed. Q: What was the response to the project last year? What are the goals for this year? A: The project was very popular last year. Anecdotally speaking, it seemed as if everyone was aware of it and we had people reach out to us from all across the province. We had people tell us that the project struck a chord with them, that they appreciated its sentimentality and positivity. Much of #LLL is run through social media, so we were able to track how people engaged with us. Reassuringly, the numbers matched our experiences. We ended up activating the project at

Based on the community’s response, VillageFest, which also hosted us last year, decided to make "#LOVEISLOVEISLOVE" their theme for this year and hired me to facilitate that. It seems that everyone

we’ve worked with so far has been happy with us, which is great. It gives me hope that we expand this project and meet the obvious appetite for feel- good initia-

tives in a tumultuous time. I have two main goals this year. The first is to expand the number of Pride festivals that we’re present at. The second is to take the

project’s brand and find ways to leverage it to concretely benefit the LGBTQ+ community, whether that means pursuing educational initiatives like the one I mentioned earlier, or finding ways to raise money for LGBTQ+ social services. That second goal is more long-term, so for this year it’s more about setting foundations. I have some ideas swirling but they’re still in utero. Q: Have you taken the project outside of the city? A: We went to Ottawa last year and it seems promising that we’ll be in Ottawa again this year. This spring I was working in Mumbai on a long-term contract and was planning on activating the project there, which would have been amazing since homophobia is a major issue in India - homosexuality is a criminal offence there, for example. My position in Mumbai turned out to be a poor fit, so I left before I could make an Indian #LLL a reality. It was a disappointment, but that’s life. As of now we’re in talks with several other cities and seeing if we can make the logistics work. I’m very optimistic about our Canadian prospects. Q: Are you hoping to make #LOVEISLOVEISLOVE a permanent staple at Pride? A: I’d love to make #LLL a staple of Pride festivals all throughout North America. I’m not sure if I’d want it to be permanent - there are so many things I want to do but I’d like to work on it for at least a few years. I think it makes people happy, and that’s satisfying in a simple, quiet way. Q: How many people are you hoping will take part in the project this year? A: Last year we saw approximately 200 to 300 people come through the booth per day. As a photographer it can be a lot to handle, but I think this year we’ll be able to up those numbers. For the past decade, the Sherbourne Health Centre Infirmary has provided health care for many of downtown Toronto’s most vulnerable residents. Having just been rebranded the Acute Respite Care (ARC) program, the former infirmary has recently expanded its services to provide first-inCanada care for the trans community. While the ARC program still offers medical care to homeless, underhoused and socially isolated people in downtown Toronto, it also provides short-term in-patient stays for trans people who are recovering from post-transition surgeries. At the tail end of a stay that lasted from mid-May until June 1, client Lesley Niyori noted the services provided were extremely helpful as she recovered from her surgery. "I don’t have a medical background, so coming out of rather significant surgery, it was helpful to be somewhere where I could ask a trained nurse ’is there anything wrong with this?’" she noted. Niyori had her surgery in Montreal and spent the following 10 days in a recovery facility there, but still needed more time to recuperate before she could be truly independent. She said it was immensely helpful to have prepared meals and on-site laundry facilities as she recovered from her surgery,

with the latter coming particularly useful when she had to undergo dilation procedures following her vaginoplasty. "The dilations can be messy and generate a lot of laundry, so it was really helpful to have laundry right here," she said. Arts and crafts made her stay far more comfortable as well, giving her something to keep her occupied as she recovered. Melanie Oda, director of the ARC program, said the renovated ARC facility offers lounges for male-identified and female-identified residents and private rooms for those who do not identify with either gender, along with aroundthe-clock nursing care, community health workers and specialists to help reintegrate into the community at large. "We did everything we could to make the program trans-inclusive and welcoming to anyone and everyone," she said. She noted that the ARC’s commitment to health care for vulnerable Torontonians has not abated as a result of the changes. Through partnerships with other medical organizations, the ARC can even provide such advanced treatments as chemotherapy, with specialist medical staff from outside the health centre dropping in to offer services. Oda added that many clients served at the ARC have a history of mental health or addiction issues, and staff are trained to provide services in a way that is sensitive to their needs.

JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com For the 51st straight year, CHIN Radio is celebrating the diverse cultures that make up both Canada and its audience base with the CHIN International Picnic coming to town. The picnic started out in 1967, when Johnny Lombardi first got a licence to run CHIN Radio, which brought a multicultural flair to Toronto’s airwaves. Wanting to both celebrate the CRTC’s decision to grant him a licence and thank his early listeners, Lombardi hosted a spaghetti dig-in on Toronto Island, with sponsors cooking and serving up pasta to a couple of thousand predominantly Italian-Canadian listeners. "Back then, he was just starting out on what’s become a multicultural dynasty," said Lombardi’s son, Lenny Lombardi, who is carrying on his father’s leg-

acy along with sister Theresa. "The picnic was born out of that first impromptu event where my dad wanted to show his appreciation for the listeners he had. "It was a big success they could barely cook pasta fast enough to feed everyone who showed up." While CHIN started out catering largely to ItalianCanadians, it now offers programming for dozens of cultures, including Italian, Portuguese, South Asian, Chinese, Russian, Spanish, Filipino and more. The CHIN Picnic has similarly expanded its scope. "As more languages came on board, my dad realized it wasn’t just an Italian celebration, so we started offering perogies, souvlaki and other food, and artists from different cultures as well," Lenny Lombardi said. This year’s picnic will feature a wide array of multicultural food and perfor-

mances, with artists from Italy, South America, Latin America, Portugal and other destinations along with some of Toronto’s best cultural acts. For the third straight year, the event will coincide with the Taste of Little Italy. "We’re adding a great, diverse lineup of entertainment to what was already a great food festival," Lombardi said. "It will go from Bathurst to Shaw, so there will be all the amenities great food, great shopping, and we’ve really upped the entertainment." This year’s picnic will also honour Canada as the country celebrates its 150th birthday. As part of the festivities, CHIN will recognize 150 people from different ethnic backgrounds who have made significant contributions to Canadian life and culture over the years. "We have 50 different languages under the CHIN um-

brella and we had a panel select Canadians of (multicultural) origin, living or dead, who have really enriched Canadian society over the past 150 years," Lombardi said. Both the CHIN International Picnic and the Taste of Little Italy will take place in the Little Italy neighbourhood - an ideal location for the former given that Johnny Lombardi first started the CHIN empire in the heart of that community at College and Markham streets. The Taste of Little Italy Festival will run from Friday, June 16 through Sunday, June 18, with the CHIN International Picnic taking place Saturday, June 17 and Sunday, June 18. For more information on the CHIN Picnic including acts and schedules, visit chinradio.com/chin-picnic-2017. For more information on the Taste of Little Italy, visit tasteoflittleitaly.ca.

• OUR VIEW •

ABOUT US

Not our story to tell This week we explore something of what it’s like to be an indigenous person at this time in our history. The scathing results of the Truth and Reconciliation report along with the lack of clean water on reserves and the national disgrace that is the gruesome number of murdered and missing indigenous women across Canada, are top of mind at the same time our country is celebrating 150 years of Confederation. We all celebrate Canada, we’re proud of our county and all of its people. But the Europeans who claimed an already populated land made and broke countless treaties and conspired to destroy the myriad cultures of First Nations people were guilty of betrayal, murder, rape, cultural annihilation and genocide. Many will argue Canada would easily have lost the war of 1812 without the support of Tecumseh and the fear his warriors instilled in the hearts of the American troops. They won that war for Britain and the deals made to assure this were defaulted on. It is high time we faced these truths and worked toward reconciliation. So when we approached this piece we did it in the knowledge that we could not carry our colonialist viewpoint into the report. Our jobs are usually going out, getting information, and then writing and publishing what we learned. But in this case we were loath to take the words said to us by indigenous people and put it through our own lens, thus distorting it with our views. The voices had to come directly from indigenous minds. Our first step was to send three reporters into communities to talk with indigenous people and ask them what we should write about and who to talk with. We brought that information back and it was clear the authors of our the bulk of our pieces had to be the ones living the experience. The result is two opinion pieces, one from a woman who will not be attending the fireworks celebrations this month, and the other from a woman who believes education is the answer to growth and healing. We spoke with indigenous people in Toronto and on reserves; with families, young professionals and artists looking toward a bright future while honouring a dark past. There is inspiration in their stories and lessons to be learned about the similarities and differences we share. And we have photos. Spending a day with folks, letting the camera’s eye capture the experience rather than put it into our words seemed most honest to us. Visit us online at insidetoronto.com for opinions, photos, video of a smudging ceremony and other thoughtful pieces about our indigenous people.

Millennials don’t want suburban Toronto dream Ken Greenberg builds cities, or rather, rebuilds them. And he told an audience of Liberals in Scarborough it’s time to rebuild Toronto’s inner suburbs. Redesigning them will be a "wrenching transition," Greenberg says, and our biggest project of the next two generations. A generation ago, urbanists like James Howard Kunstler predicted North America’s runaway suburban dream would start to collapse when oil became unaffordable. Oil’s now cheap. But Greenberg told the Liberal faithful we must transform large parts of Toronto, or our city won’t stay successful. "Downtown poverty was exported to Scarborough and Etobicoke because of where people prefer to

Many of them fought, and still fight, to save their "single-family neighbourhoods" against renters, roomers, townhouses, midrise condos, offices for midwives on a major road, or street parking, because certain long-time residents in houses - the people they listen to most - don’t want change. But unless Greenberg is wrong, big changes must come, or those neighbourhoods will stagnate as Toronto’s core becomes unaffordable. He was speaking to almost 100 federal party members. ceries. They don’t even want a car. They’ve gone downtown, and companies follow them there. Future success will go to Toronto’s mixed-use neighbourhoods. Where does that leave the poorer areas of Scarborough, Etobicoke and North York? Greenberg says we must reverse engineer our wide surburban roads back into lively, walkable streets with more public places where we can meet. Toronto’s multicultural identity is at risk otherwise, because the suburban pattern "keeps people segregated." Surface parking lots and parts of hydro corridors become new mixed use neighbourhoods, a weakness becoming a strength. Can we do this with the suburban politicians we

Scrap it! BEHIND THE SCENES: Work starts early in the morning at the Canada Iron & Metal Co. All manner of vehicles pull in to the 1.75 acre lot at the north-east corner of Jane and Dundas streets, with their refuse aboard. After being weighed and paid the scrap is unloaded in a heap in front of a crane

equipped with an electromagnetic grappler, and the sorting begins. Canada Iron & Metal, after all, is a recycler and without a place for everything and everything in its place, nothing would get done. Brass, copper, stainless steel, e-waste and more find their way to bins and eventually out of the lot, to dealers and manufacturers for re-purposing.
