A Rexall drugstore recently opened at the former site of one of Toronto’s iconic taverns, the Brunswick House.
The Brunny repurposed as a Rexall JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com When the Brunswick House shut its doors last spring to make way for a Rexall drugstore, longtime music fans lamented the
loss of another iconic venue. Thanks to the efforts put forth by Rexall, however, some of the site’s history remains within the store, showcasing how some of Toronto’s old gems can continue to survive even when their func-
tions change. "When this project was first made public in early 2016, we made a number of commitments with respect to the building itself," said Rexall spokesperson Derek Tupling. "Our intent was
always to maintain as much of the building - inside and outside - as we could." The end result is a distinctly different-looking drugstore.

Finally a hearing aid that allows you to hear in all directions! This latest digital technology solves the biggest challenge for hearing aid wearers – hearing well in noisy environments. Traditional hearing aids only allow the wearer to hear in one direction, which can make it difficult to hear in a public setting like a restaurant. Now with this new breakthrough technology, the wearer can enjoy a dynamic soundscape and differentiate between speech and noise. Nobody will notice it because of its minute size, fitting snugly and comfortably just behind the ear. Everything works automatically, so you can get back to enjoying your relationships, rather than thinking about your hearing.

JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com For many at-risk students, the end of high school means the end of their educational journey. The University of Toronto is looking to help many of those students earn their way into a postsecondary education, opening new career paths and avenues to success through its transitional year program. Recently, the program brought students to Grenada on an exchange, giving them a unique chance to integrate into Grenadian culture and experience life outside of Toronto. The program caters to students who would not usually have access to university, including single parents who may struggle to find the time or money to enter school, those who didn’t finish high school and those who have been to prison for minor offences. L.A. Wade, the registrar of the transitional year
program and a native Grenadian herself, said the students took a Caribbean literature course while there, learning at Grenada’s own St. George’s University. The opportunity is one that would not typically be open to most of those who took part in the program. "One thing that’s unique about U of T’s transitional year program is students are usually not eligible for studying abroad until they’re enrolled in arts and sciences," Wade said. "This gives them a chance to go abroad and start on a postsecondary education without being enrolled." Wade added that students got more than a classroom education, integrating into the culture, learning from the locals and discovering far more than most course curricula would offer. "Grenada is the isle of spice, so they learned about the nutmeg and cocoa industries, learned about the hospitality and

Anyika Mark, who par-
ticipated in the trip to Grenada, said the experience was unlike anything she has become accustomed to in Toronto. "We got to experience what life was like on the Grenadian campus and on
the island," she said. "It was completely different than being in Toronto and I pushed my limits more, interacting with the locals and learning what the culture is like down there. "I’m half-Grenadian, so
it was also good to reconnect with my culture." She added that many of those who took part in the program would not have been able to experience either university life or Grenadian life without it. "A lot of the people who went just don’t have the resources to access education like that," she said. Colin Dowe of St. George’s University said his institution jumped at the chance to partner with U of T, given that St. George’s emphasizes access to university for all. He said St. George’s students sometimes joined in the inclass lessons taught to U of T students, adding that the experience was positive for all. "The students who came here were immersed not only in Caribbean literature but also Grenadian culture," he said. "Getting a strong tertiary education will help them in life, but the lessons outside the classroom were also valuable."

Right, the original ’Ye Olde Brunswick House’ sign adorns the eastern wall of the new store. drugstore, ensuring they maintained the building’s historic feel and kept the architecture and heritage of the site intact. Kaitlyn Wainwright of Heritage Toronto said the Brunswick Rexall site shows how the city’s old buildings can retain a sense of history even as they transition to new uses. "Sites like this have a
role in telling the history of the city, and when someone like Rexall moves in, they can play a role in interpreting and telling the story of the building - the Brunswick House’s role as a historic tavern," she said. Wainwright noted that keeping the exterior architecture has long been a priority for Heritage Toronto, but added that it can be
equally important to make sure there is some recognition of what took place inside landmark sites. "Our history isn’t just brick-and-mortar," she said. "You see Toronto’s history reflected in the landscape, but that landscape is changing with places like the Brunswick House and Friar’s Tavern (more recently the Hard Rock Café,
which closed this spring) shutting down." With Toronto experiencing ongoing growth, more changes to the city’s landscape and the loss of more iconic sites is inevitable, but Wainwright said good corporate partners will find a way to ensure the city’s past is not lost forever. "The private sector has a
role to play in preserving Toronto’s heritage and we’re seeing more companies that understand that and are happy to do what they can," she said. "It’s still a work in progress (preserving the city’s history) but we’re certainly better off than we were 40 or 50 years ago when people would tear down and rebuild all the time."

While the exterior of the building was completely restored, the interior retained many elements that would make longtime patrons of the Brunny feel at home. "We kept the original chandeliers, the tin roof, some of the signs that were up in the Brunswick House," Tupling said. "The original archways were kept, and the bar made of old whiskey barrels was repurposed as the front cash." Old meets new on one wall, where a pictorial timeline depicts highlights from both the Brunswick House and Rexall since 1876, interlacing the histories of both the venerable building and its newest occupant. Finding a job can be tough, especially for newcomers, but one Torontobased organization is trying to make that search easier with an innovative platform called the Livelihood Project. Developed by Arash Samimi and Parin Kothari, the digitally-based mobile career coach combines digital technology with behavioural science to equip newcomers with the skills they need to secure a job and build a career in a changing work environment. "We want to close the gaps in communication and sources of information. We want to help people to navigate their career journey," said Samimi. "We want to build a job-ready workforce through skilled training." The project has earned Samimi and Kothari a Mitacs Entrepreneur Award. The non-for-profit organization, Mitacs, partners with companies, government and academia to promote Canadian research and training. "Being a recipient of this award lets me know we’re doing something right. The bar is set high now," Samimi told Metroland Media. He and Kothari first had the idea for the project two years ago with the influx of Syrian refugees coming into the city. They thought it was the perfect time to look into the gap employment
Justin Greaves/Metroland
Arash Samimi is one of the co-founders of the Livelihood Project which helps newcomers decipher which skills they need for certain jobs and in turning placing them in workshops to fine tune those skills. services "During the first year of newcomers coming to Canada, there are many agencies that successfully help them to become integrated in the community in a social aspect. But the second layer, which is their economic integration, basically finding a job, is where the problem begins and the gaps are," said Samimi. The project has three components. The first is a mobile app equipped with an artificial intelligence engine that breaks down careers into a set of skills. The second is a personalized career map and the third is a hands-on workshop where newcomers can learn and build on the skills needed for their specified career. There is also a behavioural assessment done to help decide what personality traits the newcomer possesses and if it fits with the career they want. If it doesn’t, it also suggests career paths for them. From there, newcomers are coached and supported as they start out their career journey. For newcomers with very basic skills they are given a job at the Livelihood Café in Kensing-
ton Market to help learn soft skills, such as leadership, communication and teamwork. Since launching in 2016, the Livelihood Project has a cohort of 12 newcomers from Syria, Ethiopia, Somalia and Sudan to help with pilot testing and development. According to Samimi, his project provides something employment service centres are lacking with regard to helping newcomers integrate economically into society. "One of the biggest differences is that the current employment service centres are about resume matching and it’s very mechanical and rigid. The mindset that exists right now is more toward job matching," Samimi explained "We don’t give them a job but we make them job ready. We figure out what their motivations are and their transferable skills and help them do something worthwhile." The technology is expected to have a full-scale launch in 2019, until then it remains in its beta testing form.

ABOUT US
Downtown baby boom calls for civic attention Ah, to be young, living in a vibrant and accessible city - and, of course, in love. It is a dream that is coming true for a growing number of young people who’ve chosen to start their lives in the condominium canyons of downtown Toronto. After sequestering themselves in a smallish apartment, small enough to encourage them to step out and enjoy the bars and restaurants and activities of downtown Toronto, it is inevitable that some of them will meet and fall for each other. It is only a step or two from there to where we are now: a downtown crowded with a new cohort that is even younger. Babies. Social Planning Toronto, an advocacy group looking at urban form and social justice issues, has released a report looking at the age and sex data from the latest census across all of Toronto’s neighbourhoods. And while the numbers of youngsters are constant across the city compared to previous censuses, there is a noticeable baby bump in the downtown. Over the past decade, the number of children younger than five has increased dramatically: some parts of the downtown by threefold, others by 70 to 90 per cent. If nature continues to take its course, there will be more now and even more in the future. This presents a challenge that city planners have been expecting for years but have still been struggling to meet: the need to transform Toronto’s downtown from its old role as a commercial and cultural centre into a collection of intensified residential neighbourhoods where space is at a premium. As it sits now, downtown Toronto is not especially family-friendly. Park and open space are very limited. There will need to be more classroom space as those toddlers move through the preschool stage to school age. The core will need more community centres, and a lot more licensed child care that’s affordable and close by. And developers raising condominium towers and rental units will have to make larger units a more common feature in their projects. It’s tough enough to squeeze two people into 600 square feet, after all - never mind a growing family. There are worse problems to have, of course. A whole clutch of growing families in a dense neighbourhood has been a dream of progressive urban planners for more than half a century, and that is exactly what we have downtown. Now, all we’ve got to do is make it work.

Byelections should always trump appointments Picking the councillor for Ward 44 in Scarborough was a long and occasionally entertaining process. Council had decided to appoint a councillor to fill the east-end Scarborough seat following Coun. Ron Moeser’s death in April, and as always in these cases, aspiring city councillors came out of the woodwork. A total of 48 of them put in applications, and most of those also came to a special council meeting last week to make their case. They needn’t have bothered. Councillors had already made up their minds on one of two obvious choices: a former city councillor with a reputation for fair-mindedness and a former city bureau-

All 46 others may as well have stayed home or simply withdrawn their applications, rather than give the stump-speech deputations that they did, in front of a city council listening as politely as it could.

sarily always going to be the case. When the late Jack Layton left his Ward 30 seat to lead the federal New Democratic Party, there was a move afoot by conservative-minded councillors to install a right-wing appointee as caretaker until the next election. They didn’t prevail, but the only thing that prevented them was a hard push from council’s left and centre. The only thing that will prevent that in the future is byelections - all the time, no matter what. David Nickle is a reporter and columnist covering Toronto City Hall for Metroland Media Toronto. Of course, it wouldn’t have done to tell anyone that, because doing so would only highlight how undemocratic it is for a city council to pick its own membership. This doesn’t happen at other levels of government. When a vacancy occurs federally or provincially, there’s a byelection - period. Picking their representative is a part of a citizen’s democratic franchise. As matters transpired in Ward 44, the electors there at least had their franchise respected. Jim Hart, the former bureaucrat, worked with the late Coun. Moeser for a year and will almost certainly fit well with the will of voters in 2014. But, that is not neces-

Ermias Nagatu (left) celebrates his graduation day with his mother. Nagatu earned a degree in kinesiology and health sciences from York University, something he wouldn’t have thought possible before getting involved with Pathways to Education. Verdun. The Pathways model gives some of its graduates up to $2,000 in grants toward a post-secondary education for each year they are involved in the program, with those funds good for everything from tuition to supplies for those pursuing careers in the trades. "We want to help students along their path, whatever that path is," Gillespie said. "What a lot of the students tell us is that the biggest help is just realizing there’s a circle of people around them who believe in them." Ermias Nagatu, who enrolled in Pathways in Regent Park in 2006, said the program was a major factor in his earning a degree in kinesiology and health sciences. This fall, he plans on applying to medical school - a goal that was unthinkable a decade ago. "I was struggling in Grade 9 and 10 - I failed an
English course - and the defining moment for me was when I got paired with a support worker from Pathways," he said. "I nearly doubled my grade." Nagatu noted that back when he was in high school, he faced several barriers to becoming a doctor. "I didn’t consider myself competent enough to go to university or financially secure enough to afford it," he said. "I couldn’t have imagined where I’d be now." Even after graduating, Pathways has helped him through networking, help with internships and other supports. His story is but one of thousands of Pathways graduates, with some 5,400 students and roughly 900 more graduates from this past school year. With the passing of every school year, Pathways to Education is helping more and more students find hope and a route to success. The not-for-profit started up in Regent Park, as a means of helping youth in the at-risk downtown neighbourhood achieve better results in school. At the time, many students there faced academic and financial barriers that all but ensured they would go no further than high school. "There was a recognition that too many students living in Regent Park didn’t have access to the types of supports they needed to succeed in high school," said Pathways to Education president and CEO Sue Gillespie. "There were too many students who weren’t graduating from high school." Implemented in 2001, Pathways offered tutoring and mentoring; one-on-one supports for students and parents; and financial assistance, to help young people afford bus fare to school and access post-secondary education. With a focus on some of Regent Park’s most vulnerable - yet talented students, the results were staggering. "From the time the program started, Pathways was able to double the graduation rates there within five years," Gillespie said. Given its success, the Pathways model has since been replicated in the Lawrence Heights, Rexdale and Scarborough Village communities in Toronto, as well as in locations such as Ottawa, Kitchener, Hamilton, Kingston, Halifax and

terminal at The Queensway and Park Lawn Road opens for business at 4 a.m. daily.
Above, Walter Konik shows off some of his Niagara Region-based Konik Farms strawberries at the Ontario Food Terminal farmers’ market. Konik has spent a lifetime growing strawberries, peaches and plums, the majority of which is sold at the terminal. Left, Nature’s Gardener, Manuel Macedo, loads up his truck with fresh flowers. The terminal is where independent shops, garden centres and florists buy market-ready flowers. Right, Buyer Tom So samples a red delicious apple. Buyers walk the market, checking products and prices of individual sellers before deciding to make a purchase. The farmers’ market is located underneath the terminal’s parking deck; protecting buyers and sellers from rain, snow, and the heat of the sun.

Far left, Denboer Farms’ Rob Cote keeps a close watch on the farm’s stall at the Ontario Food Terminal farmers’ market. The Otterville, Ont.-based farm owned by the Den Boer family grows 13 different crops and multiple varieties of each including five types of radishes. It caters to higher-end supermarkets. Top, the view through the front window of the Street Produce warehouse location, shows work in process. The terminal has 80 warehouse units. Middle, a truck is loaded with produce purchases at the Ontario Food Terminal farmers’ market. Approximately 2 billion pounds of produce is distributed through the terminal each year (5.5 million per day). Bottom, ceiling-mounted refrigeration units maintain the temperature on one of the storage rooms at the terminal warehouse. The terminal has 100,000 square feet of cold storage space over 19 rooms. Each room is individually controlled for temperature and humidity. An air filtration system developed for the space shuttle takes bacteria out of the rooms. insidetoronto.com
