The collective - part of the Women’s Development Network - helps women in Regent Park find ways to maximize their skills, and a recent partnership with the Yonge Street Mission’s Double Take store gives them a place to showcase their wares on a permanent basis. The group now boasts roughly 50 official members - many of them new Canadians - among the approximately 100 women who have participated. Members work individually and in groups to create goods for sale, from gift items to housewares and decorations to catered food. Sun safety top of mind thanks to new pilot project Pilot runs at Kew Gardens, Sherbourne Common, HTO Park, Harbour Square Park, Little Norway Park JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com In a bid to protect Toronto’s park users from harmful UV rays, the city has partnered with the David Cornfield Melanoma Fund and the Douglas Wright Foundation to offer free sunscreen in select city parks. The pilot program will see dispensers set up in Kew Gardens, Sherbourne Common, HTO Park, Harbour Square Park and Little Norway Park. The two foundations will cover the costs of the pilot project and ensure the dispensers - similar to hand sanitizer dispensers

Sunscreen dispensers will be on hand in five Toronto parks until the end of September thanks to a pilot project between the city, the David Cornfield Melanoma Fund and the Douglas Wright Foundation.

Launched on Wednesday, Aug. 2, the project will see six dispensers located across the five parks, which are near or along the city’s waterfront. Kew Gardens will have two dispensers, while the remaining four parks will have one apiece. "The lakeside Martin Goodman Trail and our beautiful waterfront parks are a magnet for all Torontonians and visitors who want to enjoy the outdoors and Lake Ontario," said Beaches-East York Councillor Mary-Marga-
ret McMahon, who chairs the City’s Parks and Environment Committee. "We encourage park and trail users to enjoy our common grounds safely, and that includes sun safety." Danielle Patterson, executive director of the David Cornfield Melanoma Fund, said the project is designed to keep sun safety front of mind and make sure people have easy access to sunscreen while enjoying the outdoors in the city. "Skin cancer is the most common cancer in Canada," she said. "Melanoma, the deadliest skin cancer, is one of the fastest rising cancers in Canada. Fortunately, skin cancer

CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Chances are, unless you’ve walked by his recently installed Heritage Toronto plaque on Lombard Street, Albert Jackson’s name won’t ring many bells. It may come as a surprise to most, then, that for much of the month of May 1882, Jackson’s story was splashed across headlines both local and national, capturing the attention of the city, the country, and even the likes of thenprime minister John A. Macdonald. Back then, however, the man known today in certain, all-too-small circles as a hero about whom a play has been written, a lane has been named, and a memorial plaque has been dedicated, was referred to in headlines simply as "The Colored Postman." Born into slavery on a Delaware plantation in 1857, Jackson persevered despite his most humble of beginnings to become Toronto’s first Black mail carrier - an odds-defying feat for which he was recognized by Heritage Toronto late last month. "Albert’s story is one that remains relevant to our present and can show us a way forward to build a more resilient and kind city," Heritage Toronto board member Abena Buahene said of Jackson at the July 21 plaque presentation in his name at 26 Lombard St. - the former site of the Toronto General Post Office. "His story is a reminder of how far we have come and the work we have left to do." Jackson was just a toddler in 1858 when, according to the Harriet Tubman Institute at York Universi-

Spurred to escape to freedom by the sale of her two eldest children and subsequent death of her grief-stricken husband, Ann Maria hoped to build a better life for her family upon their arrival in Toronto. While Ann Maria took on work as a washerwoman in St. John’s Ward to support the family, some of the older boys in her brood of seven also went to work but Jackson, the youngest, was given the opportunity to study and attend school. Ann Maria’s dreams of a better life were fulfilled when, on May 12, 1882,
Jackson became the first Black person ever to be appointed a mail carrier in Toronto - an appointment temporarily cut short by the protests of her son’s new colleagues. "Because he was black, he was given menial jobs inside, like washing floors, toilets and anything but the job he’d been hired for. He was resented by his white co-workers, who demeaned him daily," Shawne Jackson-Troiano said of her great-grandfather’s plight. After catching word of Jackson’s white colleagues’ refusal to train him, Toronto’s Black community rallied behind him. Soon after that, newspapers picked up the story’s commentary from both sides of the racism-fuelled
public debate over "The Colored Postman." In a piece entitled just that in its May 30, 1882 edition, the Toronto World newspaper quoted Toronto’s "colored citizens" defending Jackson’s right to take up his appointed duties as a mail carrier at a well-attended meeting at a church on Richmond Street. "While we feel proud of the notice that has been taken of us as a people, we cannot but feel pained that although appointed a letter carrier, by some prejudicial feeling on account of color on the part of some of the letter carriers or officials, (Jackson) has been detained to perform other, and we consider menial, services," the unnamed chair of the meeting is

quoted as saying, before tasking a five-person committee with investigating Jackson’s treatment at the hands of the Toronto Post Office. A follow-up story the next day detailed the swift intervention of Sir John A. Macdonald, who was courting the Black vote in downtown Toronto at the time: "(Macdonald) promised that the colored youth would go to work as a carrier come what may," the Toronto World story reads. Just two days later, on June 2, 1882, Jackson began his training as a letter carrier - a position he held for 36 years, until his death in 1918. Lawrence Jackson, Jackson’s sole surviving grandson, said he was brought to tears by Heri-
tage Toronto’s plaque in honour of his grandfather and the lessons it will teach future generations. "Growing up, I always used to wonder, ’Why is it that when I go to school and open my books, there’s nothing about him, nothing about us, nothing about any Black people?’" he said. "Back then, my teachers would say to me, ’Why do you want to go to high school? You people don’t do anything anyway.’ But they didn’t know about my grandfather. "He never thought he would get that job, but he fought to get it and even Sir John A. Macdonald fought for him to get it. And he got it. The lesson he taught us all is: ’Don’t give up the ship - there’s hope.’"

With a new room in Double Take, the collective now has a space of its own. Previously, the women have held one-off sales and hosted pop-up booths at community events such as the Cabbagetown Festival, but having a place to house their wares on a full-time basis will boost the network’s profile. Both the Women’s Development Network and the Yonge Street Mission are working to help the women move from artisans to full-fledged social entrepreneurs. "Before, I didn’t know how to make a profit making necklaces, earrings and bracelets," Sultany said. "I’ve learned a lot and improved myself and
my abilities." With participants coming from various countries around the world, the women can also learn techniques from one another and break down cultural barriers. Many of the items used to make the goods come from charitable donations, but the women purchase others to ensure they craft high-quality items. "We get some of the money from our work, but we use some to get good materials," said member Kanya Chaivat. Iris Ibarra of the Yonge Street Mission said her organization’s partnership with the Women’s Development Network dovetails well with the mission’s role as community builders. "We want to work with the women until they’re ready to launch independently," she said. "They have the talent and our
job is to teach them the business side so they’re able to run their own business." She added that the opening of the shop within the Double Take store at 310 Gerrard St. E. offers hands-on training on the business and marketing side of things. "They learn about the marketing process, how to display their items, how to design (price) tags - things they might not learn otherwise," she said. With many families in Regent Park struggling to make ends meet, the collective provides an extra source of income, as well as social opportunities for participants, who attend workshops and create goods together. A tech bar allows clients to learn to use technology, with or without assistive devices. The upper floor is more open and allows for everything from yoga classes to dances. "The space has been everything from a factory where people made tactile books to a craft zone where they made puppets to a nightclub where our youth participants were able to have a dance," said Rhonda Underhill-Gray, who heads up the CNIB’s child and youth-oriented Beyond the

With its new community hub at 1525 Yonge St., just north of St. Clair Avenue, the organization is now more accessible than ever. Bonfanti noted that the CNIB’s client base is often underemployed, with 70 per cent of working age adults without a job and 60 per cent of teens dropping out of high school. By boosting social integration, the hub aims to reduce the stigma that goes with vision loss. "We want to chip away at that stigma and get the mainstream community to be able to relax with the term blindness," she said. The hub also boosts employment, with clients running many of the programs offered. The hub will host a Get Inspired Day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 19, with programs and info sessions with community partners to help welcome and introduce people to the space. The city’s missing people need our help There are a lot of missing people in Toronto. We know, because we write up every police report and share online in the hopes word will spread and that person will be found. Our social feeds are sometimes chock full of missing person stories just due to the volume. It’s a service we justify by imagining what loved ones are going through, not knowing if their child, parent, spouse, or friend is safe. We’re an effective channel of communication and we hope getting word out there fast will mean someone somewhere will notice something, send in a tip, or better, report that they’ve been located. In the best-case scenario, we’re having to update the story soon after publishing because the person’s been found. In one recent incident, a husband apparently went out for an extended period of time without his phone and his wife panicked. Those updates are a relief to publish. Better to be safe than sorry. We’d like to thank our online followers for sharing these stories and photos. Mostly, these are published online at Insidetoronto.com and shared on our Facebook and Twitter page. Sharing with your networks helps get the word out quickly, and time is of the essence in getting people located and home safe. Domingos Martins, the 83-year-old with Alzheimer’s, was miraculously found alive last week after being missing for five days. His family made the search very public and made several appeals for help, even offering up a reward. He was eventually located trapped between a fence and a wall, and was taken to hospital in critical condition. We’ve reported several times on the story of a 31-yearold Duane Montaque who lives with autism and regularly goes missing from the home where he lives with his mother in Scarborough. Once, he stowed away on a train to reach Montreal. Earlier this summer, someone found him in Ottawa. As part of our Sunday Reads online series, once a month we also profile a historic missing child case. Though it’s been years - sometimes decades - those families and the police investigating still hold out hope. When you see these stories, have a read, examine the photos, and share with those you know. The police desperately need tips and need to act fast, so your assistance may be what makes that crucial bit of difference.

City finally unseals Toronto apartment towers Toronto’s tower-in-thepark apartments are products of The Boom, the decade bridging the 1960s and 1970s which saw 140,000 units built. Some sprouted in the suburban middle of nowhere - Rexdale, rural North York, East Scarborough, with big surface parking lots and lawns. Built when even nursing home patients were expected to have cars, they sometimes assigned each apartment two spots. The towers were "sealed in a time warp for 50 years," says Greater Toronto Apartment Association president Daryl Chong. No mixed uses were allowed. Tenants were expected to drive everywhere. Towers aged as the city grew around them. There

He’s installing a small grocery store in a Kipling Avenue highrise, expecting to start interior work this week. "Our target is to open this year," Soman says. The provincial government has announced a $4 million investment in the second phase of Massey Hall’s revitalization, following an $8 million investment for the first phase, which kicked off in 2015. The announcement, made at the historic downtown music venue on Tuesday sees the province further its commitment to the restoration of the interior and exterior of the 123-yearold site. As part of its revitalization, a six-storey tower will be built to the south of the existing building to provide additional bars, bathrooms and back-of-house facilities. Original signage, stained glass and other features will be restored, and elevators, a more accessible front entrance and new seating with improved sightlines will enhance concert-goers’ experiences.

Or more to the point, Mark Zilio is going to court March 8, 2018, to challenge city citations alleging his busker act as a web-free, earthbound Spider-Man act is a public danger. Zilio, a former break-dancer who has made a small business of dressing up as Marvel Comics’ web-slinging superhero, is facing breach of probation charges that he and his representative John Papadakis fear could land him behind bars. Zilio had been ordered by a Justice of the Peace to live up to the letter of his City of Toronto Busking license, after a May 2016 incident in which he was cited for busking too close to the Yonge-Dundas intersection, and also potentially endangering the public when he clambered a short way up lighting standards. And then in January 2017, Zilio was charged again, with being within nine metres of the intersec-
tion of Queen Street West and Spadina Avenue - which meant that he was not only in violation of the bylaw, but also the probation order. Zilio said Aug. 3 that bylaw officers had been waiting for him to step too close to the intersection in order to lay the charge. "They’ll wait until the second I step too close. they’ll say I’m breaking the law," Zilio said. "They may want to incarcerate me. I’m helping old ladies’ cross the road, telling people stay safe. I stopped a crime back at Halloween, dressed as Spider-Man. It’s like J. Jonah Jameson’s doing articles on me." Zilio was in fact caught on video in the fall of 2016, apprehending a shoplifter outside a costume store. Zilio maintained that he had been busking a legal distance away from the intersection, but simply stepped forward to speak to a Spider-Man fan. Rod Jones, Toronto’s Director of Bylaw Enforcement confirmed that the charges had been laid, but would not comment on Zilio’s legal situation. "Like anyone, he has a right to mount a defense," Jones said.
