STADIUM founder played sports to make friends in new country JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com When he first came to Canada from his native South Korea, Seokhoon Jun found taking part in pickup soccer games was the best way to get to know others in his adopted home. Based on that experience, he and a couple of others are making sure more new Canadians can use the beautiful game to break the ice and make social connections. Seokhoon, his brother James and friend Joel Atkinson started up STADIUM, their own not-for-profit league that offers pickup soccer and futsal (an indoor variation of soccer) matches to anyone who wants to join in, with a special focus on getting new Canadians out on the pitch.

"Soccer’s a very simple sport to play - it can be played by anyone - and it’s one of the most popular sports around the world," Seokhoon said. "When I immigrated here in 2002, that’s how I met up with a lot of my friends and got involved in the community. "I personally benefited a lot from playing soccer and wanted to share that with others." STADIUM offers matches for kids aged six to 12 along with adult matches, and while there is a small fee for taking part in an adult league game, those funds go toward keeping the enterprise running. "The adult program is pay-to-play because we have to pay to rent fields and rent space from the TDSB, and pay for insurance," James said. "The profit for the adult games pays for the kids’ games." Seokhoon founded STADIUM as part of an entrepreneurship program at Ryerson University and incubated the program in the Ryerson Social Ventures Zone. While all are wel-

"We’ve found we have a lot of newcomers coming out to play," Seokhoon said. "Pickup soccer is fun, but it

also has a big social aspect." Whether it’s a chance to meet up with fellow newcomers or just a way to enjoy a game of soccer, there’s little question the program

has quickly gained a following since it started up in February. Over the course of more than 70 adult matches and 50 kids’ matches, the organization now boasts 650-plus mem-

bers, with anywhere from 10 to 20 typically joining in for any given match. The fact that players don’t have to shell out a ton of money for league fees or equipment ensures STADIUM is accessible to all, and the universality of the game helps to break down language barriers. "A lot of our players have only been in Canada a few months and you hear people speaking English, French, Russian, Spanish they come from all over," James said. Adult matches are typically held in downtown Toronto, with kids’ matches taking place in Thorncliffe Park and other venues across the GTA. In time, STADIUM may grow to include other sports. For the time being, however, the team is looking to find open space to host activities, particularly in the cramped confines of the downtown core. For more information on STADIUM, visit www.stadium.soccer or www.meetup.com/futsalstadium.

Soccer startup league assists new Canadians

Midtown resident Brian Culbert racing to save lives JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com

cal feet up and down," Culbert said. "But the physical exhaustion isn’t as bad as the mental fatigue. If you sit down and get com-

fortable, there’s no way you can start your brain back up and get going again." In addition to the distance, racers also have to carry survival packs that will allow them to stay alive for up to four days in the wild, since it could take that long for help to arrive should they get injured or otherwise be unable to finish. The race was so gruelling that Culbert actually briefly fell asleep on his feet while waiting for someone to refill his supplies. "I Iooked at my watch, closed my eyes and somehow a whole minute had gone by," he said. A turned ankle could also have scuttled Culbert’s run, but with help from running mate Kit Richmond, who joined for the last leg of the ultra-

marathon, he was able to finish. Through pledges, Culbert has raised more than $250,000 of his $500,000 goal for the SickKids-Ghana Initiative. By teaching women the ins and outs of nursing, it empowers them, provides muchneeded health care support and allows them to then train other women to be health care providers. "It’s had a massive effect - mortality rates are down and it empowers women in Ghana," Culbert said. "And for every dollar we raise, the Canadian government will donate three dollars." The midtown resident is still raising funds and is looking for others who wish to join his efforts in raising funds for SickKids. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/ Racing4Lives.

Fatigue, high altitudes and even a turned ankle were not enough to prevent midtown resident Brian Culbert from finishing the 200-kilometre Fat Dog 120 Trail Race in the mountains of British Columbia. But then again, lives were depending on it. Culbert ran the gruelling ultra-marathon in mid-August to raise funds for the Hospital for Sick Children’s SickKids-Ghana Initiative, which provides nursing training for women in Ghana. The long-standing SickKids benefactor has taken part in many extreme activities for the hospital after his own son, Matthew, was born with a rare and potentially deadly skin condition. The top-notch care and support Matthew and

the entire Culbert family received at SickKids continues to inspire Culbert to give back years later. "Matthew’s 17 now, but he spent the first 12 days of his life at SickKids, and he literally spent that entire time in intensive care," Culbert recalled. "He had an amazing doctor who said ’there’s no medical science behind it, but if you hold him to your bare skin, I guarantee you he’ll pull through.’ We spent that time taking turns holding him close to us and with the care he got, he pulled through." The Fat Dog 120 is widely considered one of the most difficult races in the world, with participants running through uneven and uncleared trails in British Columbia’s interior. The 200-kilometre trail sees racers running up and down mountains, es-

Yonge Street small business owners are relieved at news that property values will be reassessed, hopefully bringing relief to massive property tax hikes. They gathered at city hall for a meeting with MPAC.

Yonge Street businesses could get reprieve from tax hikes JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Reports of the death of small business along Yonge Street have been greatly exaggerated. That’s what landlords and tenants of buildings along the street hope, at least, following a Friday afternoon meeting at City Hall that promises relief from massive property tax hikes unveiled earlier this year. Because of soaring property value assessments made by the province’s Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC), businesses in the Yonge and Wellesley area were looking at tax bills that were double what they were last year and set to increase by 500 per cent in the coming years. At Friday’s behindclosed-doors meeting, however, MPAC vowed to re-examine those valuations, with new figures expected in September. Business owners noted that the area in question is a historic district, meaning there were restrictions on development in much of the area and, as such, the assessed values were out of whack.

"(MPAC) said they would look at every property within the (historic) district and get back to us in September," said John Anderson, owner of Morningstar Trading. Some owners has already appealed the valuations in the tax bills they had received earlier this year and had gotten a reprieve. Paul Panayiotidis, owner of the building in which he runs Eliot’s Bookshop, said his property tax increase following his appeal dropped from 100 per cent to 40 per cent. "It’s more fair, but it still doesn’t mean it’s acceptable for all of us," he said, noting that he is still looking for a new tenant as he heads toward retirement. "Instead of paying $24,000 more a year, it means I would be paying $9,600 more a year if my math is correct. It’s still significant for small businesses, but there’s more room to breathe there." The property tax increase is but one issue facing business on Yonge Street. Sanjoy Kundu, owner of costume shop Theatrics Plus, said construction along Yonge has led to decreased shopping traffic and added that the increase

to Ontario’s minimum wage will further impact small businesses. "It’s not like our income in increasing; it’s actually depleted with the construction along Yonge Street," he said. "With the property tax and the wage increase, either the cost of my products goes up 30 per cent or I have to lay off people." The property tax increase has impacted Business Improvement Areas across the city, with Yonge Street’s 100 per cent increase over each of the next four years posing a massive threat. Mark Garner, executive director of the Downtown Yonge BIA, noted that if small business is priced out, neighbourhood character will disappear along with it. "You need that small fruit stand, the chocolatier, the butcher - we can’t have nothing but (retail) chains," he said. MPAC’s willingness to work on a solution with store owners and reassess the properties will hopefully serve as a permanent stay of execution on that front, Anderson said. "Yonge Street got taken care of today," he said. "For our neighbourhood, it’s a mammoth win. It’s great."

tion of "a response to a need and concern. We actually share that concern. I’m very concerned about overdoses and the needs that happen in the community not only those directly impacted, but our family, our friends and the community at large." York West Coun. Giorgio Mammoliti, a critic of the supervised injection site program, showed up at the media launch Monday morning with dire warnings about the site’s impact on the community. "We need to be talking to every single business around Yonge-Dundas Square," Mammoliti said. "Many of the businesses are going to be boarded up in a year or a year and a half." Mammoliti warned that the injection site would simply draw drug dealers and crime to the neighbourhood. However, De Villa said that hasn’t been the experience in other cities. "Supervised injection services may be new to us here but there’s much experience throughout Canada and throughout the world," she said.

Toronto’s first supervised injection site opened its doors Monday at Toronto Public Health’s Victoria Street headquarters, offering a safe place for up to three users of injection drugs at a time six days a week. The site at The Works at 277 Victoria St., across the road from Yonge-Dundas Square, is an interim location, approved just a few days earlier by Health Canada, to help provide safer ways to use illegal drugs in light of the city’s growing opioid crisis. "It’s been a whirlwind of activity," said manager Shaun Hopkins, speaking to reporters after a weekend of getting the location ready. The site is modest - just a long bench with three chairs and a place to safely dispose of used needles. But for users consuming drugs they may have purchased on the street, using the site could make the difference between life and death. "We’ve trained all of the staff so they’re able to deal

with an overdose...," said Hopkins. "We have nurses and counsellors, very seasoned with working with this population - very knowledgeable about overdose prevention intervention, safer injection, and all the referrals to other services." The site will be open from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. from Monday to Saturday, but will soon be replaced by a permanent site at the same location, that will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week. It will have five stations. The site will also be making other counselling services available. The Works already offers methadone treatment to help users overcome their addiction, as well as housing and mental health service referral. "After the injection happens is a good time to start that conversation," said Hopkins. The Works site will be adding to an unsanctioned supervised injection site set up by community health workers at Moss Park. Medical Officer of Health Dr. Eilleen De Villa said that site was an indica-

ABOUT US

Charlottesville proves we must unite against hate After the events in Charlottesville and their aftermath this month, we in Canada might be tempted to allow just a little bit of smugness amid the horror we feel at the images of swastikas and torches on parade - at the evil brutality of Heather Heyer’s murder there. We should strive to avoid that. Their president aside, many Americans, most perhaps, have responded to the resurgence of neo-Nazism and white supremacy with powerful and principled rejection. America may remain bitterly divided, with a cut still very much in need of healing sustained during that country’s Civil War. But its loudest voices - again, excepting President Donald Trump’s Twitter feed - are most hateful when they speak of hate itself. Canada isn’t in nearly that sort of trouble, or so it seems. We are open to immigration, welcoming of refugees, inclusive and kind-hearted. If there is evidence to the contrary, surely it is a trifling bit, or if larger and more systemic, then it is something that we have common capacity to correct. Thinking that is a mistake, particularly if one is doing so from the point of view of the dominant, which is to say white, culture. Setting our own prime minister’s "sunny ways" narrative aside, Canada has a history of hateful rhetoric and fascist movements, and Toronto has too often been at the centre of it. The 1930s’ Christie Pits riot in which real Nazi supporters clashed with Jewish and Italian groups is a good touchstone, but there have been more: the recentlypassed Holocaust-denier Ernst Zündel was a Torontonian for many years, peddling his hate from a house in Cabbagetown. The Heritage Front neo-Nazi organization had a presence in Toronto before it disbanded in 2005. More recently, Torontonians in the east end have found their mailboxes filled with the hate-filled screeds from Your Ward News, a publication that Canada Post will no longer deliver for that reason. And of course it is Toronto where now-former Rebel Media correspondent Faith Goldy is based. The far-right website let her go just last week after she appeared on a neo-Nazi podcast, following her attendance at the Charlottesville rally. It would be wrong to say that Torontonians have tolerated this sort of thing all these years; we haven’t. But we have taken false comfort, in the belief that the seeds of racism and out-and-out Nazism that have been blowing through the gutters will never truly take root.

Kathy Milsom named president and CEO of social housing agency JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Toronto Community Housing (TCHC) has announced two changes in its leadership. Effective Tuesday, Sept. 5, Kathy Milsom will join Toronto’s public housing agency as its new president and chief executive officer. Described in a release as "an experienced and results-oriented business executive and corporate director," she brings 35 years of professional experience to the job. Bud Purves, Toronto Community Housing Corporation’s chair, shared the news in a media release Thursday. After seven years, he also announced that he is leaving the board following its Sept. 28 meeting. Kevin Marshman, TCHC’s interim president and CEO, will help Milsom with her transition then return to the board where he will step in as interim chair until Toronto City Council approves of a permanent one. "After an extensive global search, the board has found the best candidate in Kathy Milsom and we are delighted to have her join Toronto Commu-

nity Housing as our new president and CEO. Throughout her career, Kathy has been a positive agent of change in complex organizations, and has a solid record of success in the private sector and all three levels of government. She brings exceptional expertise in real estate development, housing operations and management, property acquisition and sales, and strategic partnerships," Purves said. "Having served as board chair for seven years, I believe the time is right for renewal and growth. Now that the board has recruited an outstanding president and CEO in Kathy Milsom, the time is right to make way for new leadership who can sustain the momentum for the transformational changes that will make Toronto Community Housing a better landlord that delivers better outcomes for tenants." Toronto Mayor John Tory said Milson is a "great fit to lead Toronto Community Housing during this period of organizational change and renewed focus on tenants." "As an experienced leader in both the public and private sectors, I know she will work to improve the lives of tenants while delivering better financial and operational performance, ultimately making the corporation sustainable," he said, thanking Purves for his "dedicated service to To-

ronto Community Housing and its tenants" "Under his leadership, the TCHC board has driven important changes to strengthen governance, transparency and oversight at the company. He is leaving the company in good hands with a clear path to improving housing and services for tenants and to financial sustainability," he said. Tory also thanked Marshman for his service. "I would also like to thank Kevin Marshman for stepping into the role of interim CEO over the last four months. "He’s done exceptional work over this period of transition for the company and I am pleased he is returning to the TCHC board," he said. Ward 18 Coun. Ana Bailão, who serves as council’s housing advocate, said she’s looking forward to working with Milsom as the "City and Toronto Community Housing develop innovative solutions to generate new investments to protect and preserve the City’s social housing stock, build partnerships to deliver better services and supports to tenants, and create safe, vibrant communities where people of all ages and abilities can thrive." Bailão also thanked Purves for his support and "efforts to drive changes that have improved Toronto Community Housing’s ability to deliver its mandate." As for Milsom, she said

City starts new process for parking ticket appeals MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com The City of Toronto is taking its parking ticket disputes away from courts and starting a new appeals system where tickets can be settled online. "You will be able to submit an online dispute of your penalty, meaning the entire process can be completed without having to leave home," the city has announced. The new Administrative Penalty System will start on Aug. 28, and offer drivers a chance to fight tickets either online, or in person at Metro Hall or the North York Civic Centre. In either case, a ruling will come not from a judge but a City Screening Officer, who can reduce or cancel fines, or give drivers more time to pay them. If that doesn’t satisfy, there’s a final hearing with an "independent" officer of the Administrative Penalty Tribunal. City officials this week said the new system will be quicker and more convenient than waiting for a time in court. In 2016, the City received 251,482 trial requests for parking tickets, and over the last 10 years, more than 1.8 million parking disputes were processed in court, said Kalli Chapman, prosecution director for the City’s Legal Services Division.

Metroland file photo

The City of Toronto has announced a new system allowing drivers to fight parking tags not in court, but online or in front of a city employee. Tickets issued before Aug. 28, 2017, however, must still be challenged in court. Waiting time for a trial on a disputed parking ticket ranges between seven and 12 months, depending on ticket volume, court location, and a parking enforcement officer’s ability to attend, she said. Parking tickets issued before Aug. 28 will continue to be processed through the courts, and the City is asking drivers to check its website at www.toronto.ca/aps for more information. The Toronto Police Parking Enforcement Unit issues about 2.2 million parking tickets a year. "The new dispute pro-

cess will allow the Parking Enforcement Unit to provide better service delivery, as officers will no longer be tied up in court," said Brian Moniz, the unit’s acting officer-incharge. Toronto police continue to appeal for witnesses in the weekend shooting death of Khadr Mohamed. Mohamed was identified by police as the murder victim Monday. The 22-year-old man was found dead at College Street and Lippincott Street, near Bathurst Street, at 7:59 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 20, though the shooting is believed to have occurred hours earlier. Police said an autopsy performed Monday found Mohamed died of a "penetrating gunshot wound to the torso." "The body was found by people in the neighbourhood," Det. Shawn Mahoney told reporters Sunday afternoon. "They were coming to work and observed this and called police." Mohamed is the city’s 33rd murder victim of 2017. Mahoney said police are interviewing witnesses, examining surveillance video and canvassing the area as part of the investigation. "We’ve heard from witnesses at this point that something did occur last night that may have involved an altercation," he said Sunday. "We’re appealing for the witnesses that may have been in this area . We know it was a warm Saturday night in Toronto and a lot of people were out." Police didn’t release a description of the shooter. Anyone with information is asked to contact the homicide squad at 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416222-TIPS (8477), online at 222tips.com or text TOR and your message to CRIMES (274637).

CRIME

A 45-year-old woman who was struck by a hit-and-run vehicle while lying on the roadway in Cabbagetown Tuesday, Aug. 15 has died. Toronto police announced her death Monday, Aug. 21. Police said the woman stepped onto Dundas Street, east of Sherbourne Street, and lied down on the road at 4:05 a.m. "A light-coloured minivan was eastbound on Dundas Street, saw the woman, and the driver drove around her," Const. Clint Stibbe said at the time. "However, a second vehicle, a dark-coloured SUV with light-coloured rims . struck the woman as she was on the roadway." The victim was taken to hospital where she died Thursday, Aug. 17. The SUV driver didn’t stay at the scene. Police are still looking for the vehicle and its driver. A description of the driver was not released. Stibbe suggested the motorist may not have known that a person was lying on the roadway at the time. "They knew they struck something; they would’ve known that, whether they knew it was a person or not, that I can’t say." Anyone with information is asked to contact police traffic services at 416-808-1900 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222TIPS (8477), online at 222tips.com or text TOR and your message to CRIMES (274637).

DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Sephora Hosein grew up the daughter of a film projectionist and she credits her father with beginning her lifelong interest in science fiction and fantasy. "I’m just a lifelong fan," says Hosein in her office at the Lillian H. Smith Branch of the Toronto Public Library. "I grew up reading it, grew up watching it. My dad was a projectionist so I grew up watching films. It was a very strange childhood." Hosein is two months into what can only be a dream job for her - that of the new collection head of the Merril Collection of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Speculation. It was founded in 1970 as the Spaced Out Library, when American science fiction writer and editor Judith Merril left the U.S. for Toronto as a conscientious objector against the Vietnam War. Merril donated her personal collection of science fiction to the Toronto Public Library, and established an endowment to help the library start work on an ambitious plan: to acquire and archive one copy of every speculative book published in the English language. "It’s an extremely unique kind of collection in general in a public library setting, to be publicly available, to encourage the level of access that we do - that’s the one thing," says Hosein. "Then on a grander scale, I’m told that the Merril is a premier collection among the world’s premier

collection of role-playing games and tabletop games. "We are investigating doing programming with that," she says. "If you’ve never played Dungeons and Dragons, why not come try? If you’ve just watched Big Bang Theory on TV and said, ’oh that’s what Sheldon and his friends play .’ It might spark some interest." For Hosein, the job itself represents a massive rediscovery. Much of the collection is locked away in climate-controlled stacks, and as she walks through those stacks, "I joke that I’m going to get a neck injury," she says. Sadly, only library staff can walk through the stacks themselves. But researchers and academics who know what to ask for from the knowledgeable staff there are rarely disappointed. And for those who don’t know what to ask for? Hosein is hoping they’ll come in to learn.

P90X creator Tony Horton talks fitness at canfitpro ifornia with a friend and took work as a stand-up comedian, an errand runner at 20th Century Fox, and a Chippendales go-go dancer while struggling to make ends meet. He joined a gym, and began to train a boss at Fox for $25 a session. That lead to a phone call from Tom Petty, who was heading out on tour and wanted to get into shape. Clients Billy Idol, Annie Lennox and Bruce Springsteen soon followed. Horton was then introduced to Carl Daikeler, chairman and CEO of Beachbody, and recorded the Great Body Guaranteed! workout. Power 90 followed, along with P90X, P90X2, P90X3, 10 Minute Trainer, and Horton’s most recent workout program, 22 Minute Hard Corps. Horton shared his laws for living large with the crowd at canfitpro, a fitness conference and trade show boasting more than 300 nutrition, wellness, and fitness sessions pre-

FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com It’s a Friday morning, and the foyer of Metro Toronto Convention Centre is buzzing with anticipation. The crowd slowly makes its way up the escalator and assembles inside an auditorium where fitness guru Tony Horton is set to take the stage to give the keynote address at the 24th annual canfitpro world fitness expo. Wearing a grey collared short-sleeved shirt and black pants, the 59-year-old creator of the uber-popular P90X fitness program walks out to the applause of 5,000 attendees, where he’ll spend the next 40 minutes telling the story of overcoming bullying and a speech impediment to build a fitness empire that includes workouts, books, a T-shirt line, and a hair and skincare line. He’s also working on a new book tiled Food First. In 1980, he moved to Cal-

Trainer is for people who hate exercise. What I’m trying to do is give people options." With less than a year to go before he turns 60, Horton said he values speed, balance and range of motion above all else when it comes to his fitness plan. "In this industry, especially for men, it’s a lot of let’s see how big we can get," he said. "I’m on the 23rd day of this vegan thing, and I’ve lost 10 pounds. I feel better in my own skin; I sleep better. It is weird to look down (at the scale) and see 168 (pounds). I’m more muscular and leaner now, but I can still crank out a bunch of pullups." He trains six days a week (he takes Saturdays off) with a minimum of 40minute sessions broken up into upper, lower, and cardio workouts. It might seem like a brutal schedule, but at the core of it, Horton has just one priority: "to move today".
