Cashless society would stop human trafficking: reader Re: ‘Escaping the Trap: Coming up with a co-ordinated strategy to combat human trafficking,’ Special Feature, July 21. Kudos to the team that prepared this series. Hopefully a national newspaper will republish it. Human trafficking is the worst of all black markets. Richard Thomson, former TD Bank CEO, and other experts state that cash enables such crime, which destroys many lives and families. They propose we ensure the criminals leave the evidence of a paper trail by accelerating the inevitable move toward a cashless society. Paper trails from credit and debit cards, Internet banking and cheques have also been essential in the fight against terrorism and tax evasion. Lawabiding citizens use little cash and leave an extraordinary paper trail – a cashless society would ensure criminals do, too.Experts call cash the oxygen of crime. By cutting off the oxygen, we can greatly reduce this scourge of sex-trafficking and other black markets. Joseph Polito
City of Toronto needs subways, not bike lanes: reader Toronto and its long, extreme six-months of cold weather is not suited for bike lanes. Hence cyclists groups are a small, interest group, out to bully councillors and city hall, screaming for more bike lanes. Let it be clear - bike lanes are not used by the general common family of Toronto. There is only a small group who dare to bike during the extreme winter weathers of Toronto. Cycle lanes cause more gridlock to the already bad and congested streets of Toronto. Subways is what the general public needs, specially so during extreme cold winter months. Raymond Tamkei

sors differ from Summer Games to Summer Games, but two never change and they’re both back again in Rio. The Official Pickle: traffic congestion and the Official Excuse: lack of government funding. 6. It seems every newspaper headline during the Games has to be a play on words. “So-and-so swimmer makes a huge splash.” 7. The Games always feature a blend of familiar veterans and the introduction to some exciting new stars. For Canada, two of the former who come to mind are 33-year old soccer sensation Christine Sinclair and men’s doubles tennis standout Daniel Nestor. Sinclair, the most accomplished Canadian soccer player of all-time, leads the women’s team and is in her third Olympics. Nestor is in his sixth . As for the new Canadian kids on the block? First up is 16-year-old Penny Oleksiak who got a bronze medal Saturday and followed it up with a silver on Sunday. 8. When an athlete or team from home wins a medal, you can’t help but get a tear in your eye. 9. If they get gold, it’s tears plural and you automatically rise for the playing of the national anthem. Even if you’re just watching by yourself at home. 10. The Olympic mascot never fails to be a weird-looking creature. But darn if you don’t want to give it a hug. Rio’s is named Vinicius. He’s a big hit. So be prepared for a long wait. And no shoving if you’re behind me. I plan to take my sweet time.

Despite all the issues facing the Rio Olympics ranging from water quality to the Zika virus, the Summer Olympic Games has officially begun.
Here are 10 signs the Summer Olympics are in full swing: 1. TV announcers say “repechage” a lot. It flows so easily off their tongues you’re in awe. Hard as you try, you still can’t pronounce it properly after all these Olympics. 2. When heats are being contested in any sport, you scan each lane to see if a local athlete or team qualified. If you come up empty in your search, you quickly switch channels until you find a heat in which you have a rooting interest. The semifinals and finals you tune in regardless of who’s involved. 3. Many of your favourite Olympic events have judges decide who wins or loses. Alas, all too often, you don’t agree with their decision. An athlete winning because he/she crosses the finish line first you can understand. But after being mesmerized by a gymnastic routine and then having the judge give a much different score than you, you’re baffled. It doesn’t stop you from watching gymnastics, but you can’t help wish there was a system more in line with the nonjudged events. 4. The Summer Games are a veritable athlonfest and Rio is no different. Pick an athlon any athlon and you’ll find it here. Each captivates in its own way, but the modern pentathlon is in a league of its own. How can you not love an event that was created back in 1912, still proudly calls itself modern and nobody gets their shorts in a knot over it? 5. Many of the official spon-

LYME DISEASE Blacklegged ticks sit on tall grasses and shrubs, with arms outstretched, waiting to grab on to animals or humans. People can reduce the risk of tick bites by staying in the centre of trails, and wearing DEET-based bug repellents and light-coloured clothing that makes it easier to spot ticks, which can be as small as poppy seeds. Wearing long-sleeve shirts, and pants tucked into socks, also helps prevent bites. Early symptoms of Lyme disease can include headache and fatigue, fever and chills, and muscle and joint pain, as well as a stiff neck and rash. Left untreated, the disease can cause heart and neurological problems, and other issues. Properly removing a tick can reduce the risk of infection. For information about blacklegged tick removal, submission and surveillance, visit www.toronto.ca/health or contact Toronto Public Health at 416-338-7600.

want them as knowledgeable as we can get them.” To help, Ontario launched a public awareness campaign as part of its “Combating Lyme Disease Through Collaborative Action: Ontario’s 10 Step Education and Awareness Plan” that was released in July. Williams has seen “snippets and bits” of the federal framework, but noted it hasn’t been finalized, because some aspects are still being discussed. He hopes it will help provinces and territories better understand how other parts of Canada approach the issue, and how it varies throughout the country where different strains of Lyme-disease-causing bacteria are found. “And keep pushing the research agenda on a go-forward basis, so not just sitting and saying, well this is as it is. Let’s keep driving and looking for solid evidence and science that would move all the aspects of it, and so we’re really hoping that (the federal government) might stimulate that and keep that moving ahead,” he added. Once the framework is released, the Ontario government will review it, see what it agrees with and ask questions about points of difference. “And to see then what kind of so-called federal-provincial-territorial conjoint activities can, or should, or would we do,” Williams said. “Or what can we do more in our own respective jurisdictions.” He wants a better picture of how many Ontarians may have been exposed to infected ticks, because monitoring is done through testing and doctors sometimes use preventative medicine instead of ordering tests. Testing isn’t effective in the very early stages of infection, when medical intervention is thought to be most effective, because tests rely on antibodies that need time to build up. Instead, doctors sometimes prescribe antibiotics to keep a potential infection from setting in. “We would like to document that a bit better, so we can understand the work that our primary care doctors are doing in that regard, so it’s part of our surveillance system,” Williams said. He said Ontario’s testing method is the best. “We have a standardized one that we use, the same as CDC Atlanta and the other top-leading laboratories, it’s a two-stage one. We’re continually looking at our testing to make sure we’re trying to standardize it with other leading centres, and we feel ours is the gold standard.” He added, “We take (Lyme disease) very seriously, and we’re very concerned about it.” The provincial government will continue its awareness campaign, he added. Visit www.ontario.ca/lyme for information about Lyme disease from the Ontario government, and www.canlyme.com for more about the Canadian Lyme Disease Foundation.
