JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com The long-anticipated park planned for 11 Wellesley St. W. is starting to take shape, and it’s time for the public to make their voices heard. The 1.55-acre park was secured following a long and sometimes contentious process that saw the formerly provincially owned land put up for sale a few years back. Originally slated to become the site of an opera house, local councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam and resi-
dents lobbied to have it become a public park rather than have it sold off to the highest bidder and used to build condos. While a developer did buy the land in 2013, the new land owner, Lanterra Developments, was amenable to working with the councillor and local stakeholders to preserve a majority of the site as green space, with a 60-storey tower taking up the northeast portion of the lot near Wellesley and Bay streets. “We managed to get this space by combining parkland >>>TWO, page 13

SickKids patient gives back to hospital that saved her life Craft-a-thon event in Bedford Park community surpasses initial $5,000 goal JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com When young Ella Goldberg was rushed to the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) after an accident last summer, the initial prognosis was grim. The young girl had fallen
off a horse while at summer camp and sustained 20 skull fractures and a severe brain bleed. Though Ella’s outlook was not good, doctors worked tirelessly to save her. Much to her parents’ relief, those efforts were successful and while the youngster is still recovering,
that she survived the fall is testament to the great work being done at the hospital. Less than a year later, Ella is doing what she can to give back, with a fundraising crafta-thon hosted by family friend Dara Fox at her Bedford Park area craft shop, Designher Co.

on Sunday. “Ella’s been a customer of ours and I’ve known the family for about four years,” Fox said. “I heard about what happened and thought hosting a craft-athon would be a way to give back and to bring in more money than I could personally give.” The craft-a-thon, which invited local families to drop in,
make beaded bracelets and have a bite to eat, was a massive success. Fox had originally hoped to bring in $5,000 through the event, but that figure swelled to roughly $14,000 by the time it was over. Teenage anxiety focus of touring school play JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com While much attention has rightly been paid to the issue of bullying in schools, the growing problem of anxiety among children and teens has gone sorely overlooked. Half Full, a new play by downtown Toronto-based Mixed Company Theatre, looks to remedy that situation. The play, which will tour schools across the GTA throughout April, looks at the unique stressors that can spur anxiety and other mental health issues, looking at everything from social media to school and sports performance to dating to life at home. Playwright Catherine Frid said she was surprised to learn just how prevalent anxiety is among youngsters these days. “I talked to my sister who’s a Grade 8 teacher about the issues young people are facing these days and expected to hear things like anorexia or bullying, but she said ‘no,

the big issue is anxiety,’” Frid said. To get a sense of what causes anxiety among today’s youth, Frid and Half Full director Simon Malbogat ran workshops with more than 100 youth, learning not only
the biggest stressors, but also the technology and lingo that would help ensure the play would resonate with young audience members. “It was a fascinating process for me,” Frid said. “I had no idea about Snapchat (to
cite one example) but that’s something that’s really big for young people today.” Half Full follows Joshua, a high school student played by Kevin Matthew Wong, as he deals with the pressures of fitting in, being popular, looking cool to classmate/crush Saffy (played by Sherman Tsang), trying out for the school track team, traversing the social media minefield, keeping his grades up and worrying about his single mother’s uncertain job prospects, among other things. As he contends with these day-to-day issues, Joshua is harangued by Anx (played by Tony Babcock), a personified version of his anxiety that undermines him and criticizes him at every turn. As the play progresses, Anx becomes darker, more sinister and more omnipresent, with his hold on Joshua’s thoughts growing. “One of the big challenges was how to show the anxiety Joshua is feeling throughout the play,” Frid said. “You can show it through dialogue a bit, but it wasn’t until we realized
Josh’s angst could actually be a character in the play that it really came together.”
“

While Half Full shows the downside of anxiety, it also notes there are perks. For instance, without any anxiety, people would feel no obligation to meet deadlines, study for tests or strive to better themselves. The key, Malbogat said, was to shine a light on the fact that it exists, that it can become problematic when it becomes too severe, and that it’s not a sign of weakness. “We wanted to look more at the stigma, to destigmatize
it,” he said. “The whole idea is for us to start a conversation. We all have it in one shape or form, so let’s talk about it.” To help spark conversation, Half Full is more than just a play. Following each staging, a facilitator runs a discussion with audience members, asking them what they learned and inviting them to share and even act out strategies to deal with anxiety. Tsang, who plays multiple roles in the play, noted she experienced anxiety when she was a high school student. She wishes she had seen something like Half Full to help her understand what she was going through was normal and there were people she could talk to and methods she could use to help keep her anxiety in check. “I had anxiety, but no one told me I had anxiety because it wasn’t really talked about,” she said. “It’s good to get that conversation out there.” For more information about Half Full or to look into booking a performance, visit www.mixedcompanytheatre.com or call 416-515-8080.

Crowdfunded project shares The Way of the North JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Unbeknownst to many Torontonians, the northern portion of their own province is home to Polar Bear Provincial Park – a large wilderness area that lives up to its name by serving as habitat for polar bears, along with caribou and moose. Corktown resident Mariah MacDonald is hoping to shed light on this underappreciated park and the lifestyles of the Cree who call the small community of Peawanuck home through a new television show, “The Way of the North.” MacDonald will accompany native Peawanuck resident Sam Hunter as they experience everything from hunting for food to survival tactics to leisure activities in the northern Ontario community. “We’re going to do a pilot episode and hopefully it will get picked up,” said MacDonald, who met Hunter
The production team has started an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign to help defray the costs of the trip, though MacDonald noted they will be able to film a pilot episode whether they reach their target or not. Fundraiser ends April 12

when they were both attending the Toronto Film School. “It will be me following Sam Hunter and learning about his lifestyle.” MacDonald noted the Peawanuck community is notable in that it has stayed true to its First Nations roots. A Metis Torontonian herself, she finds the lifestyle up north, where polar bears roam free, fascinating.
“I haven’t really been able to explore my own background, but I’ve always wanted to learn more (about First Nations traditions) and there aren’t many places you can learn better than up there,” she said. “Peawanuck is a unique community because not many communities live as traditionally as they do.” Of course, filming The Way of the North will come with challenges – notably due to
the dangers inherent in working in a park that is home to polar bears. “It’s important to have an experienced guide like Sam because it can be very dangerous up there if you don’t know what you’re doing,” she said. There is also the issue of climate change, which has impacted life up north for wildlife and humans alike. The pilot episode, which will
be filmed this month, will follow Hunter and MacDonald as they go on a goose hunt, which will allow Hunter to get enough food to last his family much of the year. “Things up there are changing and geese get harder to hunt when it gets warmer,” MacDonald said. “That’s one of the hardest parts of filming up there – you can go a while without seeing what it is you want to film.”
The campaign, which runs through April 12, will simply allow them to cover the costs of special equipment needed for the trek and the filming in the wild. “Sam’s funding the majority of it, and we’ve had donations for a ticket from an airline and funds from Tourism Northern Ontario,” MacDonald said. Once the pilot episode is filmed, MacDonald hopes there is sufficient interest in the show to have it picked up for a full season. Rob Ford’s seat must be filled through byelection
Write us
W
hen it comes to how the Toronto council seat belonging to the late Rob Ford will be filled, there should be no debate. Obviously, the city must call a byelection for Ward 2 Etobicoke North. Ford, the former mayor between 2010 and 2014 and before that Etobicoke North councillor from 2000 to 2010 and then again from 2014 until his death last month after a battle with cancer, would have wanted it that way. The man believed in the power of the people and the voice of the voter as being supreme. To do anything but call a byelection, would be a serious error on the part of council. our view Toronto The first step for councillors be to declare Ford’s Ward 2 Ford would will seat vacant, and that is expected happen at the May 3 meeting. have wanted to That’s a legal requirement it that way under the City of Toronto Act: that the seat be declared vacant within two council meetings of a councillor’s death, resignation or other reason why it can no longer be filled by the previously elected councillor. Since there’s already been a council meeting, late last week after Ford’s funeral which took place March 30, next month’s council meeting is when his seat must be declared vacant. At the May 3 meeting, councillors can consider one of two options as to what they can do to fill the seat – either they call a byelection or they appoint someone to be a ‘caretaker’ councillor for the ward until the next municipal election in 2018. The City of Toronto Act gives councillors a lot of leeway as they are actually only required to appoint if it is less than 90 days prior to the next municipal election. There is no maximum amount of time left in a term that requires a byelection over an appointment. The decision is at council’s discretion. Given that there are more than two years left on this term, it seems clear that councillors should decide to call a byelection. It’s the right thing to do. Once called, the byelection must be held within 60 days of the seat being declared vacant. We look forward to a date for the Ward 2 Etobicoke North council seat taking place in late June or very early July. That’s what’s best for democracy, the people of Etobicoke North and Toronto council as a whole.

Will councillors go for a ranked ballot system? You don’t want to make judgements on character based on a single vote or action – we humans are more complex creatures than just one vote and we do things for all sorts of complicated reasons. But it’s hard to not draw some pretty firm conclusions about the character or at least motive of councillors who don’t support ranked ballot voting in Toronto. The system, not currently in use anywhere in Canada but applied in countries throughout the world, allows voters to rank their choices on a ballot. If their first choice candidate fails to get more than half the votes, their second choice is counted instead. This goes on until some candidate or another gets half of the total first, second, third and quite possibly 15th-place votes. The point is that only candidates who can appeal to half the voters in their jurisdiction get to be councillors. In the last term of coun-
david nickle the city cil, a majority of councillors voted to ask the provincial government to give Toronto the option to use ranked ballots rather than the firstpast-the-post system that’s currently in place. Then a couple of things happened. The first was the 2014 election. In total, 29 councillors were elected with more than 50 per cent of the vote, and 11 of those 29 were elected with less than 60 per cent of the vote. Mayor John Tory had just 40.3 per cent of the popular vote. The second was a latenight vote in 2015, when Ward 5 Councillor Justin Di Ciano, elected for the first time in 2014 with 54.1 per cent, put forward a motion to tell the province council didn’t mean what it said and was very happy with first-past-the-post system. If the province puts
the ranked ballot system in place, his motion said, Toronto should be able to opt out or require a referendum to impose it. And that won, 25-18. But the province didn’t listen, and this week announced that despite Toronto’s second thoughts, a municipality can select its representatives using ranked ballots if council agrees. No need for a referendum; just a vote of council. And we’ll see how that goes when this inevitably comes before council again. I’m not optimistic that it will go any better. A council chamber populated only by very popular councillors would not be the same one we have today. It’s not to say that the 14 councillors and one mayor who couldn’t get 50 per cent plus one on the first ballot would all be gone; they might well have made it up in second and thirdplace choices. But some, like vote-poor Ward 16 Eglinton-Lawrence Christin
Carmichael Greb would have had a real challenge parlaying her 17.4 per cent of the vote into a majority. But broadening her base of appeal, she might have. Who could say? From a campaign strategist’s point of view, particularly one working for an incumbent, that uncertainty makes for a real problem. Simply feeding one’s political base doesn’t ensure a lifetime in municipal politics under a ranked ballot system. In fact, what it does do is ensure that simply catering to one vocal minority in a ward will pretty much guarantee defeat at the polls, because that leaves one a first choice of that minority, and a second choice for no one. For politicians worried about their careers, that’s terrifying. For voters and taxpayers, that’s empowering. It’s a ray of hope. David Nickle is Metroland Media Toronto’s city hall reporter. Murder victim was attending memorial
Julian Weekes was shot in Corktown early Saturday.
Toronto police are looking for information following the city’s 22nd homicide of the year. Julian Weekes, 27, was shot in Corktown in the early morning on Saturday, April 2. He later succumbed to his injuries. Police were called to a Shell gas station at Parliament St. and Richmond St. E. at roughly 2 a.m. Saturday, where the victim was found barely alive
after being shot multiple times. Despite efforts by paramedics to keep him alive, Weekes was pronounced dead at the scene shortly thereafter. Weekes is said to have been shot outside Annie’s Bar on Queen St. E., where he had been attending a memorial event for his friend Ceyon Carrington, who was fatally shot in Leslieville on March 23. According to police, Weekes
went to the gas station after being shot. He was apparently intoxicated and was last seen walking and running along Queen Street. Anyone who was with Weekes on the night of the shooting or who might have witnessed the shooting is asked to call police at 416808-7400 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-2228477, or to leave a tip online at www.222tips.com

WANTED 30 PEOPLE WITH HEARING LOSS Qualified Participants Needed for Technology Field Test
We’re looking for people like you, who may be experiencing varying levels of hearing loss to evaluate a remarkable new line of digital hearing aids and a rehabilitative process that could be the solution to your difficulties. There’s no cost or obligation to participate! Call us toll-free today at one of the numbers below to see if you qualify for this Field Test. Potential candidates will be given a FREE hearing test to determine candidacy. Participants will be a given a FREE in-office demonstration, as well as the opportunity to evaluate and report their experience wearing the latest, most advanced hearing aid technology for 30 days. A full range of styles are available in this new technology, including the exceptionally discreet open-fi pen-fit and invisiblein-the-canal models shown here:
transit
Council votes to preserve Gardiner Most Toronto council detractors who are against a plan to preserve the Gardiner Expressway voted for it anyway. By a 36-5 margin, council opted to support the so-called hybrid plan, which was initially approved last year. The $718million construction project will see new on-ramps built and the elevated section of the Gardiner east of Jarvis Street pushed north to open up new development lands – if the city can secure crucial infrastructure funding from the federal government. The hybrid option also makes it possible to transform 10 acres of land under the Gardiner into public accessible space. A meeting for the Under Gardiner project is set for today at 6:30 p.m. at the Harbourfront Community Centre Gymnasium LEVITATION TRAINS coming TO ZOO wMAGNETIC
The Toronto Zoo could become the first place in North America with a transit service running maglev trains.
Similar to choosing between contact lenses or glasses, you can decide with your hearing professional which hearing aid style would best suit you. Both styles have approximately the same performance and functions, but are fitted to the ear differently.
rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT Short for magnetic levitation, maglevs travel at very high speeds, without touching the ground, and are powered by solar technology. A private consortium, Magnovate Transportation Inc., has offered to foot $25 million to cover the costs for the plan. The zoo’s board of directors will vote on the proposal this week. If the project passes all necessary approvals, it will likely take an additional 33 months for construction. The zoo hasn’t operated a train service since it closed its monorail attraction following an accident almost 22 years ago. living SAVES you MONEY wHIGH-DENSITY
A new report is touting the benefits of high-density neighbourhoods. Published by the Pembina Institute, Close to Home finds such areas are easily walkable
and provide readily accessible transit options. According to the report, people living in high-density areas save thousands of dollars annually from not depending on a car to get around. The report also advocates the building of more mid-rise residential options in higher density areas to attract families and diversify neighbourhoods. To read the report, visit www.pembina.org your opinion on subway service wshare
The TTC is looking for rider feedback in regards to subway service. Fill out a short online survey to offer your opinions on the subway system’s ease of use, accessibility, frequency and other factors. It’s almost a shame this technology isn’t more visible! Open-fit and IIC hearing aids are smaller and more sophisticated than ever, striking the perfect balance between size and performance. The elegant and highly discreet open-fit hearing aid fits perfectly on top of your ear, and the thin tube in your ear canal is designed to disappear against your skin. The new IIC hearing aid–now with wireless technology–provides all of the outstanding features and benefits you want in a digital hearing aid, minus the stigma that came with wearing one in the past.

>>>from page 1 tors first explained the long odds against Ella. “The doctors told us if this had happened to an adult, they never would have survived,” she said. “They said if it had happened to a kid much younger than Ella, they wouldn’t have survived. “Even the doctors thought it looked like she might not make it at first, but they kept working.” Goldberg noted the hospital provided services even beyond the life-saving surgery and reconstructive work to keep Ella alive and well. She and Paul Goldberg – Ella’s father – benefited from some of the specialized care SickKids provides to families of patients. “They had social workers right there, taking care of our needs so we could focus on taking care of Ella,” she said. At the craft-a-thon, Ella took a moment out from working the food table to recall the care she got while at SickKids last summer. “The doctors and nurses there are really nice, and they’re all like a family,” she said. “They all treat each other with respect.” To show her gratitude, Ella herself set up a lemonade stand shortly after being discharged from SickKids, bringing in $150 on her own.

Ella Goldberg, 8, is the guest of honour at a craft party fundraiser to benefit the Hospital for Sick Children held Sunday at Designher Co.
The craft-a-thon’s success was another big step in thanking the children’s hospital for the vital work they do. “We can’t do enough to thank them or to give back,” Goldberg said. “They gave me
my baby’s life back.” A fundraising webpage for the craft-a-thon will remain up and running through Friday, April 8 at www. designherco.com/ellas-crafta-thon
The creamy white sauce was a layover from Kailey’s mother’s days as a vegan and a throwback to the Italy her mom had left behind when she was seven. But over time, the creamy cashew concoction became a pet project for both Kailey and her mother. “She and I had always been obsessed with cooking together, that was how we bonded and spent all our time,” says Kailey.
Two preliminary design concepts for green space presented at meeting >>>from page 1 dedications from three (Lanterra) development sites and purchasing a portion of the site,” said City of Toronto parks planner Corinne Fox, at a public meeting on Monday. T h e m e e t i n g g a ve residents a chance to help determine a vision, with two preliminary design concepts for the green space presented. Designed by architectural firm DTAH, the two plans were similar, with the main point of difference being the redesign of a driveway servicing buildings at 909 and 926 Bay St. Both plans offered up a flexible green space in the south end of the park, central and north plazas, shade canopy, and café seating options. John Hillier of DTAH noted there are challenges to building a park on the site, notably that it is being built atop an underground parking facility. “There are obstacles like vents and stairs from the underground parking, and we don’t want them to drive the design of the park, but we do have to deal with them,” he said. Hillier noted that, in
speaking with members of a steering committee and other nearby stakeholders such as the YMCA and its in-house high school, the design team was presented with a variety of priorities. It would have been difficult to incorporate all of them on the site, he said. “What we’ve heard so far is that it’s really a place where people come together, a community commons for the whole neighbourhood,” he said. “We shouldn’t have a design that serves one (purpose). If we put a soccer field in, that would take up the whole park.” The plan could include everything from a small performance space to public art to vending kiosks, and would potentially allow for the closure of Breadalbane Street along its southern edge to be closed to traffic at times to accommodate a market. It will also include upgraded lighting to ensure public safety. While many of those who attended the meeting approved of the concepts in general, they unanimously preferred the option that would see the footprint of the
driveway for the Bay Street towers lessened, allowing for more green space. Wong-Tam said the preliminary designs offered promise, but added she would like to see more greenery included. Those unable to attend the meeting can learn more about the project and offer feedback until Monday, April 18 at www.toronto. ca/11wellesleywest
Every Set
of Lost Keys
Has a Story “We lost our keys at a hockey game out of town, including our expensive-to-replace smart key for the car. Our War Amps key tag did its job when our keys were returned to us last week by courier, much to our relief.” – War Amps supporter
So when the theatre major went vegan, her mom followed suit and they took to evolving the cashew sauce into a vegan alfredo. It was a work in progress when her mother died. “I was finishing up my degree and cooking like crazy to deal with the grief,” she says. The rest of her time was devoted to working her job demoing products at a health food store. “And my sister was like ‘hey, you should sell some of the stuff that you’re making.’ ”
Mom’s Secret Recipe Earns Vegan Entrepreneur Fans Amongst Toronto Carnivores As Well
It was an a-ha moment for Kailey. The entrepreneurial theatre major set out perfecting the sauce and launched NONA Vegan Foods, expanding to include two more vegan sauces – carbonara-style and cheesy-style. She’s grown from local, independent shops to over 50 stores including Loblaws and Whole Foods throughout Ontario especially the Greater Toronto Area.
No matter the occasion, a holiday or visit during spring break, Kailey Gilchrist knew that when she made that drive from university in Toronto back home to Barrie, she’d be greeted by a familiar smell – that secret family recipe, her mom’s cashew sauce. “She had been making this cashew sauce for years,” she says.
The Key Tag Service – it’s free and it works. Nearly 13,000 sets of lost keys are returned every year.
To help launch her business, Kailey took advantage of groups like Enterprise Toronto and Futurepreneur, which Kailey received both a loan and mentorship from.“I’m blown away with how many resources there are in Toronto – all these little hubs and networking events and the little communities that just want to support small businesses,” she says.
