MARATHON OF HOPE: Skaters take to the ice at Wilder Arena Sunday to commemorate the 35th anniversary of Terry Fox starting his Marathon of Hope on April 12, 1980.

Meagan’s Walk - and hug - May 9 JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com One family’s heartbreak has become a beacon of hope for countless others. Young Meagan Bebenek was four years old when she was

first diagnosed with brain stem glioma, an inoperable brain tumour. While the news was obviously devastating for her family, they and a raft of supporters have gone on to ensure the legacy Meagan left behind was a positive one.

Following her death in 2001, Meagan’s mother Denise decided to start Meagan’s Walk, which has become an annual event to raise funds for the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). This year’s Meagan’s Walk

campaign was kicked off at SickKids on Monday, with students from various GTA schools dropping off thousands of paper cranes – a symbol of hope that became linked with the cause when Meagan was >>>WALKERS, page 6

As the City of Toronto works on a poverty reduction strategy to help its most vulnerable residents, a wide variety of community organizations and concerned citizens are making sure their voices are heard. A campaign known as Commitment 2 Community is bringing a wide array of stakeholders together on the issue, ensuring people’s voices are unified and come across loud and clear. Representatives from various service organizations met for a Commitment 2 Community s t ra t e g y m e e t i n g a t t h e Children’s Aid Society building at 30 Isabella St., last Friday to discuss what they would like to see included in the city’s Poverty Reduction Strategy. “One thing we’ve heard from a lot of people is that there’s a real sense of urgency,” said Winston Tinglin, interim executive director of Social Planning Toronto, the organization taking the lead on Commitment 2 Community. “We’re glad to see the City of Toronto is committed to a Poverty Reduction Strategy, but they’ve talked for a long time and people are not going to be convinced it’s for real until >>>POVERTY, page 2

Poverty reduction group to meet again May 22 to discuss strategy >>>from page 1 they see action.” More than 60 community members and workers from service providers attended the meeting and workshopped ideas based on the City of Toronto’s framework for its Poverty Reduction Strategy. They shaped discussion around five areas highlighted by the city itself: food security, housing, jobs, transit and services and supports.

with the city’s plans, but people from the different organizations (who are part of Commitment 2 Community) are more grounded, and more able to reach out to residents directly.” Howarth added those involved are looking primarily at ideas that will make the biggest difference and those that can be implemented quickly and easily in order to ensure fast action.

Rob Howarth of Toronto Neighbourhood Centres said Commitment 2 Community members usually meet around the time the city is discussing its budget, largely to ensure support for not-forprofits and community supports is not whittled down. That Toronto is now coming up with a Poverty Reduction Strategy has livened members of the group. “We’re working closely

The main takeaway from Friday’s meeting was that those who have lived in – or who are currently living in – poverty need to be heard when it comes to outlining a strategy to help deal with the issue. “We should include actual people in the development of the plan as much as possible,” said Sean Meagher of outreach and communications company Public Interest.

“We need to draw on lived experience and we need to draw on research and learning.” Commitment 2 Community will meet again on May 22 to discuss the best strategy to take when looking to inform the city’s plan. The City of Toronto will make decisions on the Poverty Reduction Strategy this summer, and Commitment 2 Community is hoping to

have many of its members make deputations. The strategy has been in the works since April of last year, and the city dedicated $24.5 million toward the initiative in last year’s budget. Filmmaker tackles infant nutrition in documentary Downtown resident Noemi Weis’s Milk to screen at Hot Docs Festival on April 27 and 29 JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Downtown Toronto-based filmmaker Noemi Weis has thrown down the gauntlet in the battle of the breast. Her film Milk, which will be screened at the upcoming Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, takes an intimate, cross-cultural look at childbirth and infant nutrition, looking at the commercial, societal and other issues that inform motherhood. Shedding a light on early child care and feeding in 11 countries, Milk showcases the myriad difficult decisions mothers face when bringing a new life into the world. “Amazingly, there’s not much difference between the different countries,” Weis said. “One of the things that really struck me when doing my research, though, was witnessing the influence of formula and how much that’s

being pushed on some mothers, especially in emergency situations.” Weis aimed to show a balanced view when it comes to infant nutrition, showing mothers who breastfeed and mothers who have decided that breastfeeding is not right for their children or their lifestyle. “What’s important is to support the mother in whatever her choice is, because no matter what she chooses, it’s more of a challenge when she’s not supported,” the filmmaker said. “If a woman decides (using formula) is better for her lifestyle and she’s properly informed, then that’s her choice.” Weis was surprised to find so much discourse – and so many conflicting and at times contentious viewpoints – surrounding breastfeeding. For Milk, she spoke with mothers, lactation consultants and medical experts to get as balanced a view as possible.

Filmmaker Noemi Weis’ documentary, Milk, looks at childbirth and infant nutrition from the perspective of various cultures.

She said that type of approach was necessary for such a universal and crucial subject. “It’s really something that touches all of us – we’re all parents or we know someone who is,” she said. “Because of that, people are very opinionated when it comes to the subject, and sometimes the advice a mother can get is

overwhelming.” To ensure the best possible care for infants and mothers, Weis feels more education is needed, particularly in the medical profession. While doctors may be well-suited to make recommendations when it comes to childbirth, they are not often equally equipped to coach mothers on infant nutrition.

“I definitely think a lot more attention has to be paid by schools of medicine when it comes to nutrition,” she said. “It needs to be more of a priority, because every baby should have the right to the best care and nutrition.” Information surrounding infant nutrition should be shared with mothers and to those around her to ensure they can provide the right support. Surprisingly, Weis found a larger cultural difference when it comes to actual childbirth than when it comes to nutrition. In some places, such as Sao Paolo, Brazil, Cesarean sections are the norm. “Sometimes, that’s a decision that a woman’s made on her own and sometimes it’s implanted in the culture,” she said. “It can certainly be easier for doctors, who can just schedule a Cesarean instead of having a mother go into labour at 12 o’clock

at night and then having to spend maybe the next 20 hours with her.” Milk is the latest in a series of documentaries Weis has filmed, all of which tackle social issues. Through her production company, Filmblanc, she has touched on subjects ranging from child trafficking to domestic violence to the community-healing power of music. Milk will screen at the Hot Docs Festival at the Isabel Bader Theatre at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, April 27 and again at 11 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29. Covenant House raises awareness about homeless youth JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com

S

ome 60 young professionals took to the streets of Toronto, sleeping out in the rain in hopes it would mean fewer youth would have to. They packed into sleeping bags in a parking lot near Yonge and Gerrard streets on Thursday, April 9 as part of Covenant House’s Sleep Out: Next Generation. The event is an offshoot of Covenant House’s popular Executive Sleep Out, which has seen top executives spending a night in the cold every winter for the past four years. “We’ve had four years of Sleep Outs in 15 cities and two countries,” said Covenant House International president and CEO Kevin Ryan. “There have been 4,000 people who have slept out and they’ve raised $15 million in support of shelter, education and other help for homeless and trafficked

youth.” Prior to sleeping outside in inclement weather, the sleepers dropped by Covenant House Toronto to hear from youth whose lives have been transformed as the organization helped them transition away from a life on the streets. Thursday night’s sleepers combined to raise some $210,000 in much-needed funds for Covenant House Toronto. Ryan noted 80 per cent of the organization’s funding comes from private donations, making events such as the Sleep Out integral to Covenant House’s operations. Despite the event’s ongoing success, Ryan admitted he was skeptical when it was first proposed. “Honestly, when folks mentioned it to me four years ago, I thought it was the dumbest idea I’d ever heard,” he said. “I thought it would be difficult to get executives to come into the shelter and hear from

our kids, much less sleep outside for a night, and I’m so glad I was completely wrong about that.” Covenant House Toronto executive director Bruce Rivers said the event has played a vital role not only in raising funds, but also in showing participants firsthand where the funds they raise go. By hearing from youth who have used Covenant House as a stepping stone to success in their lives and then by getting a taste of what so many youth face every night, the sleepers are given unique insight into the work Covenant House does. “They get connected to the cause and engaged in a way they never would if they just attended a rubber chicken dinner and heard us talk about the work we do,” Rivers said. Richard Ivey, one of the sleepers who braved the cold rain on Thursday night, was taking part in his second Sleep Out event.

Reunion Island Coffee’s Adam Pesce, left, and Media Experts’ Richard Ivey take part in Covenant House’s ‘Sleep Out: Next Generation’ fundraiser on April 9.

He said spending a single night outside was a small price to pay in order to help youth find their way off the street. “This is an easy thing to do, but it does a lot of good,” he said. “And it really makes you realize, some kids have to do this every night.” Ivey’s involvement with Covenant House Toronto extends beyond the Sleep

Out. Impressed with the work the organization does, he also gives additional time to help out the youth at Covenant House, using his expertise with Media Experts to provide advice. “After doing a walkthrough (of Covenant House) I saw how they help young people who need help,” he said. “Now I’m mentoring one

of the young girls there who has a lot of bright ideas, but who needs someone to bounce those ideas off.” Fellow sleeper Adam Pesce of Reunion Island Coffee also helps out beyond the Sleep Out event, bringing his therapy dog to Covenant House on a regular basis. He said his family has long supported the organization, even though he didn’t know it for the longest time. “I told my mom I was raising funds for Covenant House and she told me she supported them for years,” he said. “When I asked why, she said ‘when you were young, I knew you were never going to have to sleep out on the street, but I was always happy to know that if you did, that a place like Covenant House exists.’”

Recognition of community service a potential win-win

olunteer recognition: it’s important, but doesn’t need to be expensive. As we’re in the midst of National Volunteer Week, many organizations across the country that rely on volunteer efforts are busy acknowledging those efforts. And for good reason. According to Statistics Canada, 12.7 million Canadians volunteered for nearly two billion hours in 2013. That’s a lot of work being put into making our communities stronger. Though it may seem counterintuitive – as volunteering tends to be a selfless act – recognition is nevertheless important. According to Volunteer Canada, studies show that volunteer retention rates are linked to recognition. So what are organizations and causes to do? Resources are understandably our view limited. Yet the time and expertise of volunteers are critical cogs to getting jobs done. Thank a One recent study, published by Volunteer Canada, suggests volunteer or there’s reason for optimism. The become one study entailed a pair of online surveys – one for volunteers and another for non-profit organizations. There were 379 responses. According to the organization’s 2013 National Volunteer Recognition Study, the ways people want to be recognized tend to be the most cost-effective ones – such as “being thanked on an ongoing, informal basis.” Least-preferred methods included items like banquets and formal gatherings. “Few volunteers want to be thanked in public ways,” states the Key Findings section. “But they do want to know the impact of their contribution.” So here’s a challenge: if you’re an organization, take this week as an opportunity to review your recognition practices and get to know your volunteers a little better. Engaging your volunteer base may spark conversations and ideas that can be of mutual benefit. If you’re a volunteer, don’t be afraid to ask how your efforts made a difference. Finally, if you’re not already a volunteer in some capacity, consider becoming one. The average contribution in Canada ranges from two to four hours per week, according to Statistics Canada. It may not be about the recognition, but the benefits of meeting new people, learning a new skill and contributing to your community (a key point in the Volunteer Canada survey). Council only has two choices when it comes to future of Gardiner Expressway Ah, what a relief! Councillor Jaye Robinson and Mayor John Tory and, with any luck, a voting majority of Toronto council are going to end the debate over the Gardiner Expressway’s future once and for all, and will do so by the summer. “This is a once-in-alifetime decision and we need to make sure we get it right,” said Robinson, in her capacity as chair of the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee. Robinson said that at a Tuesday news conference, made necessary by a bit of reporting by Oliver Moore at The Globe and Mail, about certain leaked details of an environmental assessment report looking at options for the crumbling elevated expressway. By now (as you read this) the report will be out and the first public consultation on its contacts will have occurred.

david nickle the city But as I write this, I have only Moore’s word on its content: Robinson and city staff would not confirm the most likely option, a ‘hybrid’ that reroutes part of the expressway at ground level, would cost about $900 million. That’s a lot of money, but it would provide a lot of benefit to a lot of people: first and foremost, the developers at First Gulf who are planning a massive redevelopment of the Unilever site. The development would create thousands of jobs, and generate millions of dollars in revenue to be put toward Mayor Tory’s SmartTrack plan – the surface rail project that would run right through the First Gulf

project. Given that, council really only has two choices on its plate: either tear down the whole expressway as earlier suggested, or go with this hybrid model. This will not only help with vehicular congestion, but political congestion too. For more than a decade, the future of the Gardiner Expressway has been a political pinch point for the left and right on council. The left has, broadly, favoured the simple removal of the elevated highway. That option dovetails with the views of late urban planning guru Jane Jacobs and others, in that it would open up the city’s waterfront to pedestrians. The broadly-defined right on council, meanwhile, has put considerable political energy into maintaining the thing – on

the largely correct theory that right-of-centre voters from the suburbs feel that the expressway there is a kind of entitlement, even as every spring and summer it flings pieces of itself onto the hoods of cars travelling below it. These and other engineering conundrums surrounding the Gardiner have thus been subsumed in an existential fight between left and right on council for the course of the debate. The future of the Gardiner itself has always been something that could wait. But not anymore. The injection of First Gulf might be what it takes to break the standoff between the Jane Jacobs and Ayn Rand sets on council. Here’s hoping.

Walkers raised $400,000 last year >>>from page 1 going through her own battle with cancer. “When we heard about Meagan, we thought ‘we’re Catholic – we’ll pray,’” said Halina Ogonek, a former teacher at Our Lady of Sorrows, the school young Meagan attended. “One of our students said ‘I’m going to make 1,000 cranes for Meagan’ and that little thought sparked something in the student community.” That outpouring of support has only grown over the past 14 years as more and more people had joined in for the annual event. Last year, some 3,000 walkers raised more than $400,000 through the walk, which culminated in a giant group hug around SickKids. “We have the walk, our gala, school programs and thirdparty events, and those are all an opportunity to share awareness, share our message and fundraise,” Denise Bebenek said. “The walk is our big event, but it’s always been about sharing a message

of hope 365 days a year.” While the walk bears Meagan’s name, it has become a symbol of compassion and care from youngsters to youngsters, with various schools in the GTA and elsewhere hosting their own events and participating in the yearly walk. “We always say, ‘every school has a Meagan,’” Bebenek said. Brain tumours are the leading cause of cancer-related death for those under 20, with between 400 and 500 Canadian children diagnosed with a brain tumour each year. Meagan’s Walk aims to put an end to that. Eva Avramis of the SickKids Foundation noted the funds raised go toward brain tumour research, educational and clinical initiatives at the hospital. Seven-year-old Charley Bloor, who was diagnosed with a brain tumour when he was less than a year old, has participated in Meagan’s Walk with his family since 2009. Charley spent two weeks

throwing up and then woke up one day with weakness in his left hand and problems with his right eye. As the day went on, he found he was unable to move his entire left side. “They did a brain scan and found a massive brain tumour the size of a really big lemon,” he said. “I had to have a 10-hour brain surgery, but my doctor was able to remove the whole tumour.” Seven weeks of radiation treatments followed, and Charley has been cancer-free ever since. Meagan’s Walk gives him a chance to reconnect with the staff at SickKids and to reflect on the fact that many children diagnosed with brain tumours face relapses. He said he enjoys taking part in the yearly walk “so that more kids can have a happy ending like me.” Meagan’s Walk will see participants walking from Fort York to SickKids on Saturday, May 9. For more information, to register for the walk or to donate to the cause, visit www.meaganswalk.com

Winning terminal design both practical and iconic RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Toronto’s redesigned ferry terminal is one step closer to becoming reality. Waterfront Toronto announced the winning entry Friday for a juried international design competition it organized to seek ideas for the future look of the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal and surrounding Harbour Square Park. The winner was Harbour Landing – a joint submission of architecture firms West 8, KPMB and Greenberg and Associates. Their design envisions a new wavy-shaped covering for the terminal made of wood and topped by indigenous greenery, which doubles as an elevated parkland space, resulting in “perfectly framed” views of Lake Ontario and the ferries coming to and from the Toronto Islands. Jury chair Donald Schmitt said the design took home top honours as much for its practicality as its “iconic” design.

“The combination of simplicity and the shaping of space, we thought it was remarkable,” said Schmitt during a short ceremony held at Waterfront Toronto’s headquarters inside the 20 Bay St. office building. “We really felt it was a park design that created a sense of repose, a great green living room for the city.” Architect Ken Greenberg said the inspiration for the Harbour Landing design came from seeking to turn the concrete ferry terminal and surrounding industrial lands from an “introverted” location to one which proudly proclaims itself as a premier destination in the city. “This is the moment we hope to be truly extroverted and to welcome our relationship with the harbour... and make a powerful statement of the optimism of our city,” Greenberg said. The task now turns to creating a master site plan and securing governmental approvals and funding for the project, which will be

built in phases. Both those hurdles will require approvals from city council. Waterfront CEO John Campbell argued public support for the work – as evidenced by some 1,200 pieces of public feedback made on the shortlisted designs – makes a strong argument for convincing elected officials to spend the money to transform the terminal into something truly befitting of its namesake Layton. “Projects like these show people change could happen,” Campbell said. To r o n t o Ce n t re - Ro s e d a l e Councillor Pam McConnell suggested funding for completing the terminal re-design could come from a variety of sources, including development charges, Section 37 funds, plus money coming directly from the private sector. “Our job will be to find the money,” she said.

Councillors pour attention on craft beer industry Toronto needs to belly up and work to lift the city’s burgeoning craft beer industry onto the international stage, say two downtown councillors. Trinity-Spadina Councillor Mike Layton and ParkdaleHigh Park Councillor Gord Perks are asking the Economic Development Committee to instruct city staff to work with Toronto’s small brewers as well as bars and restaurants to make Toronto the “craft beer capital of the world.” “We’d like to see a greater

investment and attention paid in fostering growth in the craft brew sector,” said Layton. Layton and Perks make their case in a letter to the Economic Development Committee. They note Toronto’s food and beverage sector is a major employer in Toronto, with nearly half of the province’s employment in that sector in Toronto. And craft beer is, according to the LCBO, the fastest-growing sector within the provincial alcohol retailer’s beer cat-

COMING THIS SPRING

egory. “Ontario consumers have made it clear that they have a strong interest in the premium quality local products being produced,” the two councillors wrote. But it has not always been easy for craft breweries trying to establish and grow in the city. Layton said the city could eventually make legislative changes so breweries can expand more easily. But that, he said, is for another day. – David Nickle

Interested in carrying the torch for the Parapan Am Games? Enter the contest to become an official torchbearer Ali Raza araza@insidetoronto.com Pa r a l y m p i c c h a m p i o n Chelsey Gotell kicked off the start of the Toronto 2015 Parapan Am Games torchbearer contest at the CN Tower on Tuesday, April 7. As one of the torchbearers, Gotell was ecstatic to have the opportunity to not only carry the Parapan Am torch, but also support the legacy of the Parapan Am Games. “I’m honoured to be one of the first official torchbearers,” she said. “Someday there will be athletes out there saying ‘I found out about Paralympic sports through the Toronto 2015 Games. “To me, that is the true legacy of these games.” A legacy that will further enhance and promote

paralympic sports for future generations, is what Gotell believes is “beyond the facilities and beyond the games.” Canadians are invited to be torchbearers for the unprecedented torch relay that will involve two flames, 12 communities and 250 torchbearers from across the country. The five-day journey will bring the two torches – one lit in Ottawa (east flame) and the other lit in Niagara Falls (west flame) – to Toronto just before the opening ceremony of the Parapan Am Games on Aug. 7 when they will join to become one flame. Communities welcoming the torch will have their own festivities and celebrations that will be announced closer to the date. Anyone aged 13 and up by Aug. 3, 2015, can enter to be

a torchbearer. Gotell added that athletes, spectators and Canadians from coast to coast “have a responsibility to inspire the next generation to get involved in sport.” Gotell competed in three Pa r a l y m p i c G a m e s , a t Sydney 2000, Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008. She has a total of three gold medals, two silver medals and seven bronze medals from her career as a Paralympic swimmer. Having already been a torchbearer for the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Torch Relay, Gotell will continue her role as a Paralympic pioneer as torchbearer for the Toronto 2015 Parapan Am Games Torch Relay.

Rose Avenue school students help make Pan Am Games inclusive JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Making the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games the most inclusive ever will take the work of everyone, from event organizers down to Ontario’s future athletes and leaders. PrideHouse Toronto, a provincewide strategy for the lesbian, gay, bi, trans, queer (LGBTQ) communities in Ontario during and leading up to the Games, the Toronto 2015 Games and Education Minister Liz Sandals came together Wednesday, April 8 – the International Day of Pink – to take a step in the right direction. A classroom of Grade 5 and 6 students at Rose Avenue Junior Public School took part in an art project to kick off the launch of The PrideHouse that Kids Built, a province-wide initiative that will see students at thousands of schools decorate cardboard “bricks” to promote inclusiveness in sport. “At PrideHouse Toronto, we believe there should be a place for everyone in sports,” said PrideHouse co-Chair Catherine Meade. “Through this program...elementary students from across Ontario will have an opportunity to have class discussions about inclusiveness in sports.” Sandals said the initiative would help the province meet its goal of getting kids more active. The government is promoting a program that aims to increase physical activity among children and youth by promoting sports and told the students “we want to make sure when you’re doing that, you’re not discriminated against.”

The City of Toronto holds public consultations as one way to engage residents in the life of their city.Toronto thrives on your great ideas and actions. We invite you to get involved.

Rosie Cossar, a former Olympian who led the Canadian women’s rhythmic gymnastics team to three medals in the 2011 Pan Am Games, read the students a story from a workbook that contains stories promoting inclusiveness. Following the story, the students got to work decorating their “bricks”,

cardboard slabs on which they were encouraged to draw and write supportive messages. Once collected, the bricks will be assembled into several art installations, including one at the 519 Community Centre.
