From its rainbow flag to its ongoing efforts to reach out and spread a message of inclusiveness to its congregation, Manor Road United Church has long been supportive of the Lesbian, Gay, Bi, and Transgender (LGBT ) community. This weekend, the midtown church will go a step further, celebrating its 90th anniversary by officially becoming an affirming ministry. The new designation will declare it open and inclusive to all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. The road to becoming an affirming church has been a long one, but the journey has been more than worthwhile, said Manor Road United reverend Debra Schneider. “It’s been ongoing over a number of years, with more and more events happening over the past year and a half or so,” she said. “We’ve done a lot of education, having people come in and share their own stories and increasing understanding among members of

Now the school has its own archives to celebrate its longstanding past, which has seen the likes of Sam “the Record Man” Sniderman, Howard Moscoe and Morley Safer pass through its halls. The archives contain artifacts from throughout the school’s lengthy history, including a school diary from the 1800s, Clinton Street Public School’s official Corporal Punishment book from the start of the 20th century, student registration cards from its early days, school and community photos, bios of famous alumni and more. Molly Johnson plays Music for Memory Project April 29 Horseshoe Tavern concert in support of Alzheimer’s research JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com

Recording artist Molly Johnson will perform at the Music for Memory concert to benefit Alzheimer’s research.
With her two children growing up, downtown Toronto resident Molly Johnson decided this was the year she would finally start saying “yes” to more projects and return to a more active role on the music scene. That decision led to her taking the stage in the upcoming Music for Memory Project concert at the Horseshoe Tavern. Johnson had long been in the public eye, from her days as a child actor in musical theatre through a career fronting bands Aldo Nova and the Infidels. That career slowed – though she still made music, recording a number of solo albums – when she started a family 18 years ago. “After 18 years at home baking cookies, I decided this year to not say ‘no’ as much,” she said. “The second I said I wouldn’t say ‘no’ as much, Chris Tait (of the band Chalk Circle) called me up and asked me if I’d like to be in (Music for Memory).”
The concert will benefit those living with Alzheimer’s disease and was prompted by the Alzheimer’s diagnosis of Spirit of the West frontman John Mann last year. Music for Memory leans on the power of music in rejuvenating the memories of those with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. While the concert is for a good cause, Johnson admitted to feeling some hesitation when first asked. “It was completely out of my comfort zone – the artists all learn a John Mann song and I’ve always found it hard to learn other people’s stuff,” she said. “But I had promised myself I wasn’t going to keep saying ‘I can’t, I’m making dinner, I’m baking cookies, call me in 10 years.’” The concert’s philanthropic nature also appealed to Johnson, who has a long history of using music to enact change. In the 1990s, she founded the Kumbaya Festival, an annual concert series that featured top Canadian acts in a bid to raise funds and awareness around HIV/AIDS.
“The whole notion back then that AIDS was a gay disease was my impetus for starting (Kumbaya),” she said. “I wanted to deliver the bad news to young people that you don’t have to be gay or an intravenous drug user to get AIDS.” Last year, she released an album of Billie Holiday covers and hopes to use that as a springboard for more philanthropic work. “This year’s the 100th anniversary of (Holiday’s) birth,” she said. “Every jazz station in the world is going to be playing her songs, and if the people who own the copyrights to her music are ever going to make money off of it, it will be this year. I’m hoping to cajole the owners of those copyrights to give if not all (the residuals) then at least a portion from this year to Boys and Girls Clubs.” Those clubs are near and dear to Johnson’s heart. While her own sons are older – her oldest is headed to university and her youngest is going into Grade 9 – she knows the value of after-school program-
ming. “Every parent fears that 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. window when kids are just floating around with nothing to do,” she said. For now, however, Johnson is focusing on the Music for Memory Project, for which she will play “My Oh My” from her own catalogue along with a selection from Mann’s body of work. The cause for that concert is also near to her heart. “My stepmother has Alzheimer’s and I’ve seen how it works – it’s really devastating,” she said. In addition to performances by Johnson and Mann, the Music for Memory Project concert will feature Royal Wood, Andy Maize and Josh Finlayson of the Skydiggers and other Canadian talent. Concert-goers who donate an iPod shuffle to help those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia receive a special limited edition concert gift.

Students create mural for Appletree farmers’ market JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Thanks to their local Appletree farmers’ market, students at Davisville Junior Public School have learned plenty about nutrition. What they’ve learned is now on display for all to see. The students unveiled a mural in June Rowlands Park on April 17 depicting Davisville Village Farmers’ Market, which takes place in the park on Tuesdays from 3 to 7 p.m. from May through October each year. “There was an old, vandalized scoreboard that’s been sitting there in the park doing nothing for years,” said Appletree Markets cofounder Lesley Stoyan. “The city allowed us to take it over and gave us two pieces of plywood to decorate it.” The students’ mural covers both sides of the scoreboard, with the side facing Mount
Pleasant Road promoting the farmers’ market and the other side showcasing the benefits of healthy eating. Davisville Junior Public School teacher Elizabeth Savelli, who oversaw the student project, said the thrill of being able to design a piece of permanent art in their neighbourhood came second to the students’ enthusiasm for the market itself. “They love going to the market... They had a lot of great ideas for the mural, so the hardest part was finding a way to incorporate all their ideas together,” she said. The students were certainly not short on creativity. “On the mural facing inward (into the park) there’s a mom watching TV with her daughter and it says ‘you’re not doing this on Tuesdays anymore because you’re at the market,’” Savelli said. “There are also images of farms with trucks carrying
organic produce directly to the market.” The students took roughly a year to complete the mural, with two panels measuring about eight feet by four feet on either side of the old scoreboard. “They used acrylic and little painting pens because they were young students – Grades 1 to 5,” Savelli said. The mural is part of a partnership between the market and the school – Appletree runs the subsidized snack program at Davisville, eschewing unhealthy snacks in favour of fresh and healthy options. The partnership between Appletree and the school is growing. “As part of our Sustainable Schools Program, we’ve partnered with Davisville to engage the students and help them develop healthier eating practices,” Stoyan said. The mural is a permanent part of June Rowlands Park.

Toronto’s new police chief should listen to his own voice
Write us
T
oronto’s new police chief, Mark Saunders, is going to be hearing from a lot of people telling him how he should do his job. The one voice he most needs to listen to is his own. He is a 32-year veteran of the Toronto Police Service, most recently serving as deputy chief. He also served in a number of high-profile units including guns and gangs and homicide. Saunders also makes history as being Toronto’s first black police chief. He said he understands many may view that as meaning he can magically improve the relationship between police and the black our view community, which has been strained due to the “carding” policy critics say unfairly targets New chef black youth in the city. However, needs be be he warned residents at his introductory press conference at visible police headquarters he does not have “superpowers.” Fair warning, and the right approach, we believe. Saunders has to be careful in these first few weeks about overpromising and making people think he will change things done by the outgoing chief, Bill Blair, that were considered unpopular. He needs to remember he is a police chief, not a politician. That, of course, won’t stop the politicians from coming after him if we won’t bend to their will. One area where Saunders can have an impact is by reaching into Toronto’s many different communities. Blair held numerous town hall meetings hosted by the different police divisions, which were usually well attended but rarely confrontational. This wasn’t enough to convince some of the city’s communities he was a chief of the people, understanding life in the streets. Saunders must get this message through. He must be highly visible to residents. He must show an intimate understanding of the daily challenges of life in marginal neighbourhoods and he must motivate the leaders in these communities to advocate on his behalf. Saunders should go a step further and attend town halls organized by youth groups and organizations representing different multicultural communities. Having visibility and compassion for circumstance will go a long way to winning the trust and respect in the neighbourhoods and communities where he needs it most.

Untangling the food truck compromise Our new mayor spent last year campaigning on a great many things, but one of John Tory’s earliest causes was also one of his most common-sensical. It boiled down to this: What the dickens is wrong with a food truck at the side of the road? Tory raised the issue about a year ago, when the notably mayor-free Toronto council was wrestling the deep philosophical question of how many food trucks can one fit on the doorstep of a restaurant. Council wasn’t sure. Owners of restaurants of the stationary variety thought there shouldn’t be any, as food trucks offered unfair competition. Food truck owners, meanwhile, called baloney, and pointed out that the rest of the world seemed to be able to sustain both fine dining establishments and roving food vendors. And demand for this kind of thing is growing
david nickle the city everywhere. In the end, council supported a twisting knot of a compromise: food trucks needed to operate no closer than 50 metres to the front of a restaurant, should they park in pay and display spots in the downtown. Tory offered tacit support for the policy as council approved it, but made it clear he thought food trucks should be encouraged rather than restricted. No more red tape, at least not very much. The food truck industry could use that kind of TLC. Over the past year, the restrictions of the original policy were such that only 17 new food trucks bothered to lay out for the $5,000-a-year license. On Tuesday, April 21, Toronto’s Licensing and
“
Food trucks do have one advantage, in that they can, if business goes sour in an area, pull up stakes and set up somewhere else.
Standards Committee took a baby step toward that vision, on the one-year anniversary of the approval of the new food truck bylaw. Licenses need not be year-‘round affairs, and sensible food-truck operators that really only want to operate in warmer months can purchase them for a bit less. Fifty metres becomes 30 metres as the minimum distance between restaurants and food trucks. Tory and council could stand to relax that distance regulation even further. Food truck operators
would of course be happiest with no distance requirements but would settle for 15 metres, opening up more possibilities for locations. All of which might make restaurant owners – particularly those with smaller restaurants that specialize in take-out – nervous about the competition. Food trucks do have one advantage, in that they can, if business goes sour in an area, pull up stakes and set up somewhere else. A failing brick-andmortar restaurant has no recourse but to close up. But restaurants on the edge have far more factors affecting them than the prospect of an RV-sized lunch counter pulling up outside for a few hours. And for the rest of us – a little more choice can only be a good thing.

Actress in Bollywood adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com
Photo/COURTESY
Tahirih Vejdani will be appearing in a Bollywood adaptation of Shakespeare’s, ‘Much Ado About Nothing’, at the Tarragon Theatre starting April 29.
While she has plenty of experience acting, singing and dancing, Palmerston Village area resident Tahirih Vejdani’s latest project will combine the three in ways she’s never used them before. Vejdani is set to appear in a Bollywood adaptation of William Shakespeare’s acclaimed work Much Ado About Nothing. The modernized play fuses Bharatanatyam and Bangara dance, dialogue and original songs in Hindi and English with the classic play, using Brampton as its setting. Though she has performed theatre in English and has performed Bangara and Bharatanatyam dance before, Vejdani admits the adaptation of the bard’s work is like nothing she’s done before. “I’ve never done a full Shakespeare show – I’ve performed at Stratford, but not Shakespeare,” she said. “Singing in Hindi’s also challenging. English is my first language, though my mother’s South Indian, so she speaks Hindi, Tamil, English and learned Persian when she married my father.” The play required plenty of
rehearsals, coaching and translation to ensure the cast was all on the same page. The dialogue switches between English and Hindi, though there are English subtitles throughout. “Hindi’s used more by the older characters, and especially when they’re in a heightened state of emotion,” Vejdani said. The Bollywood version of Much Ado About Nothing features a battle of the sexes as well as a culture clash, with Vejdani playing the role of Suba – better known to Shakespeare aficionados as Balthazar. For the play, the Palmerston Village area resident had to rely on many of her varied areas of expertise for the role. She studied music at the University of Regina and has performed with such groups as the Nathaniel Dett Chorale and the Toronto World Unity Choir, serving as the conductor and music director for the latter. “Toronto World Unity Choir is a Bahai-inspired choir and we play a lot of multi-faith events around the city,” she said. Vejdani has also appeared in the Pirates of Penzance and Elektra at the Stratford Festival, and has added performances at Young People’s
HOME ENERGY LOAN PROGRAM
citycentremirror.com
Theatre and the SummerWorks Festival to a long list of on-stage accomplishments. When not performing, Vejdani teaches at the Regent Park School of Music. “You’ve got to do a lot to make it in this industry, and teaching’s a great way to stay involved,” she said. The play, directed by Richard Rose with assistance from consulting director Ravi Jain, will serve as an introduction to Bollywood for some, an introduction to Shakespeare for others and a mix of two disparate, but beloved art forms for those already familiar with both. Much Ado About Nothing will be staged at the Tarragon Theatre’s main space from Wednesday, April 29 through Sunday, May 22. Foundation looking to raise funds >>>from page 1 promote healthy bodies and healthy minds,” said MLSE Foundation executive director Michael Bartlett. “(MLSE) obviously has basketball, soccer and hockey links, but the new courts will be open to all kinds of sports from dodgeball to broomball to volleyball.” Bartlett noted the centre would focus more on learning through sport as opposed to teaching sports skills. The aim, he said, would be to get kids, youth and young adults all involved. “We’ve certainly got a goal of offering before-school programming and we’ll look at smart partnerships to make sure it’s being used during school hours by young adults,” he said. “There will obviously be weekend and nighttime programming, and Toronto Community Housing has a great program – Midnight Basketball – that we’d love to see there.” The facility will also offer nutrition and cooking classes, breakfast programs and
more. The MLSE Foundation is looking to raise the funds to build the facility, which will be designed using the same expertise that saw the construction of professional facilities such as BMO Field and the Air Canada Centre. Bartlett said the cost to build the space could surpass $6 million, with programming costs on top of that. ‘Midnight basketball’ To r o n t o Co m m u n i t y Housing interim CEO Greg Spearn said he is looking forward to “kids using the place for Midnight Basketball, for learning through sport, learning nutrition through the kitchen.” He noted the kids’ families will be encouraged to drop in and cheer them on as they play, noting the facility will be “a place where people want to be.” While the intent is for the building to be open to all, regardless of financial situation, Bartlett noted the deci-
sion has not yet been made as to whether they will be offered free of charge or for a nominal fee. “The intention is to offer no-cost or low-cost programming and we’re still looking to see what’s most effective,” he said. “We want to promote accountability, and charging a small fee tends to keep people engaged a little longer (as they’ve already paid to participate.)” Councillor Kristyn WongTam said there is a strong need for such a facility in the downtown east neighbourhood where the facility is slated to be built. “Many of our young people are looking for opportunities to be engaged,” she said. “They’re looking for activities, there’s a need for active engagement and right now we are a community that doesn’t have a lot of these facilities and programs.” Should everything go quickly, the building will be open and operational at 261 Jarvis St., in early 2017.

Celebration service set to take place Sunday >>>from page 1 the congregation.” The church has also held movie nights with films focused on LGBT issues, with discussions held afterward. Information packages, and website and facebook updates, have also given congregants a chance to learn more about the LGBT community. With a strong focus on education, Schneider said
the Manor Road United congregation voted almost unanimously in favour of becoming an affirming ministry. The church has had queer members – some out, some not – over the years. Just more than a decade ago, the church’s then-reverend Susan Howard came out as a lesbian to the congregation, and Manor Road United’s current Children’s Ministry coordinator is transgendered.
“It was really heartening to hear (Howard) standing in front of the whole congregation and being able to be open about who she is,” Schneider said. The church’s 90th anniversary and affirming celebration will feature appearances from several special guests, including Rev. Nan Hudson, a lesbian clergywoman with the United Church. It will take place at the
church, 240 Manor Rd., starting at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, “It’s going to be a big celebration service and Affirm United will present us with a plaque officially declaring us to be an affirming ministry,” Schneider said. The ceremony will be following by a luncheon, for which people are asked to RSVP to ellen.manorroad@rogers. com

Mark Saunders: ‘We need to have more open dialogue’ ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com Mark Saunders says maintaining public trust is among his top priorities as he prepares to take over as Toronto’s police chief at the end of the month. “Once I’m sworn in I’ll go into more detail, but I can tell you public trust right now is something that is very important to me,” he told reporters during a news conference Monday. “I really do think that we need to have more sit downs, we need to have more conversations, we need to have more open dialogue,
and I think that that will afford us a better opportunity to decide what is best for the city.” Saunders, currently deputy chief in charge of specialized operations command, will replace chief Bill Blair, whose contract ends April 25. Police services board chair Alok Mukherjee said the board undertook “a very intense and vigorous process” to select the new chief. The process began with community consultations in the fall of 2014. “Two words: leader and change captured the essential requirements of the job,” Mukherjee said. “The board’s
objective was to identify an inspiring and credible leader who would work with and be accountable to the board to ensure that policing is anchored in community partnerships characterized by mutual respect.” Mukherjee added the board sought a leader who would be open to “new models of policing as well as the introduction of new technologies to enhance efficiency.” The selection process reviewed both internal and external candidates. The city’s two other deputy police chiefs, Michael Federico and Peter Sloly, were also in the run-

ning. “The board is confident that in Mark Saunders, it has found the advocate of effective, equitable policing, the recognized police leader and the creative problem solver that it was seeking,” said Mukherjee, noting “there are high expectations from the board and the community to see real change in the way we provide services and conduct business.” The new chief will tackle carding, racial profiling, police interactions with people in crisis and the cost of policing. Saunders, a 32-year veteran of the service, was unit commander of the homicide squad before being appointed deputy chief. He had also served stints on professional standards, the drug squad, the emergency task force and the urban street gang unit. Mayor John Tory said Saunders’ “wide-ranging” policing career gave him the police experience the board was looking for. “But beyond that, we were also looking for somebody who could help us

to modernize policing,” he said, adding the “global search (for chief) both helped us to learn about changes which are happening in policing in 2015 and also to have a better basis upon which to judge all of the candidates.” Saunders said in the coming weeks he would lay out a “fullscale road map” on where he’d like to take the service. “I love this city for what it
stands for. The fact that we have over 140 different cultures and that we live peacefully together is a testament of what great citizens we have,” he said. “They deserve the best police service in the world, a police service that is biasedfree and whose members treat everybody with respect and dignity. You have my promise that I’ll do everything in my power to provide just that.” On the issue of the cost of policing, Saunders suggested he’ll be looking at ways policing could be cost effective without compromising public safety or reducing customer service. When asked if he was open to eliminating carding, Saunders replied, “I’m open to what’s going to be best for the city.” He said he wants to hear what the concerns on the issue of carding are and work with the board to come up with solutions to “keep the community safe, but also to minimize the collateral damage that (carding) is causing.”
