How the sharing economy is growing and helping more people reduce waste and save money

From Uber to Airbnb, there’s little question traditional markets are getting a shakeup. More and more, people are looking for cheaper, more convenient ways to get the goods and services they need, whether it be rides, accommodations, housewares or even a bite to eat. The sharing economy, as it has come to be known, is growing in stature and popularity, with a growing number of companies and groups offering peer-to-peer sharing and swapping. From Canadian-made eBay offshoot Kijiji to more localized organizations such as the Toronto Tool Library and Bunz.com, shoppers have plenty of options that will help them reduce waste and save money – in some cases, not having to spend a dime to get the things they need. Kijiji is perhaps the bestknown Canadian success story in the sharing economy. Launched in 2005 by Janet Bannister of Brampton, it is now the fourth-most popular website in Canada and is visited by 16 million Canadians a month. Shawn McIntyre, Kijiji’s community and communications manager, said the greatest hurdle for disruptors of conventional retail lies in

convincing people that buying second-hand goods doesn’t necessarily equate to buying second-rate goods. “A lot of it is just dispelling people’s preconceived notions that these items aren’t necessarily good,” he said. It appears that message has been heard loud and clear by many. The second-hand economy, as McIntyre calls it, has become a multi-billion dollar
industry, with Canadians averaging 77 items bought or sold and $1,000 earned per year. “About $30 billion has gone into our GDP in Canada based on the second-hand economy,” he said. For those who argue that the sharing economy hurts the overall economy, McIntyre noted that Canada is not generally a manufacturing nation, and that buying goods directly
from other local residents actually helps matters. “You know your money is staying in Toronto,” he said. The Toronto Tool Library (TTL) offers members a chance to borrow tools for various handiwork, and its new offshoot – the Sharing Depot, which launched on Wednesday – has expanded its offerings to include camping gear, party >>>FINDING, page 13
With a safe injection site potentially slated to open up at The Works near Yonge and Dundas, some members of the public are angry over a lack of public consultation prior to the location being selected. At a public meeting on Wednesday, April 20, Toronto Centre-Rosedale ( Ward 27) Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam, City of Toronto Medical Officer of Health Dr. David McKeown and The Works manager Shaun Hopkins offered up some facts and details about safe injection sites in general. While members of the public acknowledged the need for such a facility, some expressed dismay over its location and the fact that The Works was chosen as a site without those living in the area being offered the chance to give feedback. “Was there any sort of public consultation?” one audience member repeatedly asked McKeown, prompting the Medical Officer of Health to acknowledge that indeed there was not. >>>TORONTO, page 10

Grades 4 and 5 students at Ecole Elmlea participate in a Blank Canvases art class. Blank Canvases is hosting an ’80s-themed warehouse art fundraiser this weekend to help bring arts programs into model schools in Toronto.
Blank Canvases brings artists to classrooms JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com
Toronto has a rich artistic history and a bustling arts scene, something the artists involved in the Blank Canvases program are working to ensure today’s youngsters understand. Based out of the King Street West neighbourhood, Blank Canvases pairs artist/ instructors up with elementary school classes to teach them a bit about the art that’s going on all around them and help immerse the students in the arts world. The idea, said Ilene Sova of Blank Canvases, is to make art more accessible to youngsters. “As a kid, I learned about artists, but they were all dead white European guys like Van Gogh and Monet,” she said. “When we show (students) pictures of local artists working in their studios or of public art they would recognize, they love it.” Blank Canvases does more than teach kids about local artists. Following a brief primer on Toronto’s arts scene, students get to create pieces of their own, using the

After 21 years spent working to combat poverty around the globe, Free the Children took some time to give back to the downtown community it calls home. Fo r y e a r s , F r e e t h e Children has operated out of a Cabbagetown building at 233 Carlton St., working to bring food security, clean water, education, better health, and agriculture to developing regions around the world. While its focus has been global, it has not forgotten the poverty in its own backyard. On Friday, the organization continued a tradition of handing out free lunches to those in need in nearby Allan Gardens. “We’ve done this over and over again as a way to connect with the people in our own community,” said Deveney Bazinet, manager of Free the Children’s international program team. “It’s a chance to meet and talk with the people we pass by every day.”

Odessa DeMarco makes a sandwich for Debi Okane while Nina Vujosevic looks on at Free the Children’s 21st anniversary Friday. The organization celebrated by handing out sandwiches in Allan Gardens.
Free the Children staff members made and distributed sandwiches, drinks and snacks throughout much of the day, hanging around Allan Gardens until their supplies ran out. Bazinet said Allan Gardens was an ideal location given its proximity to at-risk downtown
communities. “Regent Park is definitely a lower socioeconomic area, but there are lots of people from all walks of life coming through the park,” she said.

Family tragedies motivate woman to take on Ride to Conquer Cancer JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Having had eight family members diagnosed with cancer, midtown Toronto resident Carly Brenner has had more than enough of the disease. Brenner’s father, Laurence, died in February after battling lung cancer, the latest – and most personally devastating – in a long line of tragic family incidences. To h e l p s u p p o r t t h e fight against cancer, she is taking part in the Journey to Conquer Cancer Run or Walk, which raises vital funds for the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. “I’ve been involved in this cause for a while,” Brenner said. “In 2010, I decided to do the Ride to Conquer Cancer based initially on my uncle, who had been diagnosed with melanoma. While he was going through chemo, my mom was diagnosed with

thyroid cancer.” Fortunately for the Brenner family, the mother, Shari, managed to make a full recovery after undergoing two surgeries and iodine radiation therapy. Two days following Shari’s second surgery, however, the family was hit with more bad news. “We lost my great uncle to bladder cancer,” Brenner said. “He didn’t know he had it, but he’d been in and out of the hospital with health problems.” In subsequent years,
Brenner has lost her grandfather to leukemia and another uncle to testicular cancer. Two cousins have also been diagnosed, one with a rare form of leukemia and the other with breast cancer. Her father’s diagnosis last April was yet another blow. While her father’s battle with cancer was tough news to swallow, Brenner rededicated herself to raising funds for Princess Margaret and the life-saving research and treatment that takes place there. Within a day, she had raised more than $800 through a Facebook plea, and donations started picking up again when Laurence was admitted to Princess Margaret a week before he died and even more so when cancer took him.

Bloor bike lanes a correct path to improving safety

T
oronto councillors may feel they will have a tough decision to make when they meet next week. Absent any advice from the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee, councillors will have to decide whether to launch a pilot project on Bloor Street West to see whether a short stretch of that road can endure and maybe even benefit from a bikeway, separated from car and truck traffic. Watching the strained debate that took place Monday at the committee, one might think the decision would strain even the wisdom of King Solomon. Bloor Street is a significant our view east-west artery, and removing the lanes from car traffic will cut Move could automotive access in half. At the time, climate change and a prevent many same growing population dictate that we cannot continue to encouraccidents age fossil-fuel-burning cars and trucks in our downtown without offering safe alternatives. Yes, it’s another battle of cars versus bikes. We hope that when this comes to Toronto council, councillors will stand down from the battlements and take a rational look at this very rational plan to consider expanding our city’s cycling network. The pilot project is just that – an experiment to see how Bloor Street and the surrounding neighbourhoods would fare if the city were to install cycling infrastructure similar to the separated bike lanes on Sherbourne Street, and on Richmond and Adelaide streets. The separated lanes have worked out well there, in some cases tripling the number of cyclists using the routes. That’s impressive enough. But there is another more immediate reason for trying separated lanes on Bloor. As it stands, the street is dangerous for cyclists. Between 2008 and 2012, the stretch of road in question – between Shaw Street and Avenue Road – has had an average of 22 collisions a year. Most of those were dooring, followed by a motorist trying to pass a cyclist and a motorist driving into a cyclist out of onstreet parking. Separated bike lanes would reduce those types of accidents. It would make all Torontonians safer. And that, in and of itself, is worth a look when it comes to this pilot project. Council only has one choice.

Roots of Bombardier streetcar deal go back to 2009 When Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) Chair Josh Colle and CEO Andy Byford stood up Monday to talk about Bombardier and the missing light rail vehicles, they didn’t want to dwell on the past. On the one hand, it’s an odd subject to avoid – given the trouble the city is having with its elusive new streetcars is very much a consequence of past decisions. On the other hand, the business of the day on Monday had nothing to do with repudiating past administrations, and everything to do with delivering Bombardier Transportation the most scathingly public single-star Yelp! review possible. Bombardier had it coming. The Montreal-based company should have, by the schedule of delivery, provided a total of 73 new streetcars delivered to the TTC by the end of 2015. Actually delivered in that
david nickle the city time? Fourteen. And as of today? Seventeen. There were problems, mostly to do with a decision by Bombardier to outsource production of some of the custom parts to Mexico. But Bombardier had assured the TTC that they were ironed out, and promised to have 54 delivered by the end of 2016. On Monday, Bombardier made it clear, via a new CEO, that if they work very hard they can guarantee that 13 additional vehicles will be delivered by the end of the year. That means that the TTC will likely have to refurbish even more of its stock of older streetcars, adding to the $34.1 million it’s already spending to do so because of the earlier backlog. Bombardier’s covering that much. But because of the contract that the city signed, it is only liable for
$51 million in costs due to delay. It is here, of course, that one is led straight to the past – specifically, to 2009, when former mayor David Miller convened a special council meeting during a long civic strike, to ink the $1.2 billion deal with Bombardier that would eventually go so very wrong. Toronto paid a larger portion of the purchase price than it should have, as Ottawa turned down a request to pay for a third of the bill, and it came at the cost of deferring certain capital projects. It was a competitive bidding process, but an imperfect one, as the only serious competitor – the German-owned manufacturer Siemens – struggled with Canadian content requirements and effectively disqualified itself with an untenably high bid. And Bombardier won the contract, with a requirement for only 25 per cent Canadian content and as it turns out a sweetheart
of a contract. It’s hard to say what Miller’s city government might have done differently. Perhaps held out for more bidders? Enforced a larger Can-Con rule to keep production out of Mexico, or done away with it entirely and forgone funding that was dependent on it? Or just paid hundreds of millions more for the same number of streetcars to a foreignowned company with a good record? This, perhaps, is another reason why Byford and Colle aren’t too quick to blame the Miller regime for the decision. In the end, going with any of those options involved taking a chance on one of a range of options. And while it might not always turn out the case, in this case the least expensive, most tempting option was the worst bet.

Toronto Council will make final decision on Bloor bike lanes DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Toronto Council will have the final – and only – word on a proposed pilot project to build a separated bike lane on a small stretch of Bloor Street, after the city’s Public Works and Infrastructure Committee emerged deadlocked from public hearings Monday. Running on a bare fourmember quorum, the committee was split evenly between supporters of the pilot project – York West Councillor Anthony Perruzza and Beaches-East York Councillor Mary Margaret McMahon – and those who
opposed the plan – Etobicoke Centre Councillor Stephen Holyday and committee chair Jaye Robinson (Don Valley West). Under council’s rules of procedure, that means that Toronto Council will deal with the pilot project report without advice from the committee. But the committee itself received plenty of advice, mostly from members of the public who strongly advocated setting up the pilot, which would see separated bike lanes installed on Bloor between Shaw Street and Avenue Road, beginning in September.
“Torontonians want to ride, but they won’t do it unless we provide safe cycling infrastructure,” said Jarod Kolb, executive director of bicycling advocacy group CycleToronto. Kolb was one of numerous deputants who noted other separated bike lanes have increased the number of cyclists on the road. Separated lanes installed on Richmond and Adelaide streets increased bike traffic threefold. The committee also heard from Gideon Forman of the David Suzuki Foundation, who argued the bike lanes would encourage people to leave their cars at home.
“The research we looked at suggests that even if a small number of people shift, it can make a substantial difference in air quality,” said Forman. The committee heard from bike clubs from some of the nine schools along the route, and from more agitated activists — some of whom bristled at questions from committee members regarding the impact that the lanes would have on car traffic. Vehicular lanes on the route would be reduced from four to two, with one lane of on-street parking. “Why is the convenience of motorists holding sway over the safety of others?” asked Wayne Scott, director of Hoof and Cycle. “The people that live in the downtown area understood what we’re talking about.” Scott was referring to polls conducted by the city indicating that a large percentage of people living in the neighbourhood who were both cyclists and pedestrians supported the pilot project. Opinion was sharply divided among motorists and shop owners.

Cyclists make their way along Danforth Avenue. Toronto Council will be deciding if cyclists will be getting their own designated lane along Bloor Street.
There were a few who spoke against the bike lane pilot project. David Turnbull, speaking on behalf of the Ca n a d i a n Co u r i e r a n d Logistics Association, said the lanes could complicate deliveries to businesses. Resident Sarah Henderson said cyclists should stay on existing lanes on Harbord Street, which was “fabulous for bikes.” Councillors were divided.
Deputy Mayor Denzil MinnanWong, not a member of the committee, indicated he was concerned that the pilot project had no clear measurement of success. “How many extra bikes have to use Bloor Street before you declare victory?” he asked. The bike lane pilot project would, if successful, pave the way for bike lanes extending further along Bloor, possibly east to the Danforth.

Toronto medical officer of health in support of safe injection site >>>from page 1 Despite the opposition from some in the audience, The Works does have a number of points that make it an ideal site for such a facility. For starters, it’s easily accessible and right in the downtown core, and studies have shown that drug users will often not travel a long distance to inject drugs. Second, it has already housed a needle exchange program for intravenous drug users since 1989 and
provides other medical care such as HIV and hepatitis C testing. Staff there are also trained in de-escalation techniques should the need arise. While many, including McKeown in his capacity as Toronto’s lead proponent of health, have come out firmly in support of safe injection sites in the city – The Works was one of three sites proposed – Wong-Tam noted there is still a lot to be learned before the sites become a reality. “This is all new for Toronto, so we
want to make sure we get it right,” she said. “At the end of the day, what we don’t want to do is put out a service that doesn’t meet the needs of the community.” Based on images presented at the meeting, the safe injection site would feature a utilitarian space where intravenous drug users would be able to inject drugs using clean needles and a “chill out” space where clients could be monitored to ensure they do not overdose or otherwise react badly to
Eglinton Crosstown Update: Stations Open Houses The Eglinton Crosstown Project is building the Eglinton Line, a 19-kilometre light rail transit (LRT) line that will run along Eglinton Avenue through the heart of Toronto, with a 10-kilometre underground tunnel in its central section. When complete, the line will connect Mount Dennis in the west to Kennedy Road in the east, and will move passengers up to 60 per cent faster than bus service along Eglinton Avenue today. Join us at our upcoming open house and learn about the future stations on the Eglinton Line in your neighbourhood. Starting in early spring 2016, the next phase of construction began at Keelesdale Station and many other Crosstown stations will be under construction before the end of 2016. Join Metrolinx and its constructor, Crosslinx Transit Solutions (CTS), at an open house to find out: • what construction is happening in your neighbourhood • why it needs to happen • how it may impact you • who to contact if you have questions/concerns • when construction is happening

the drugs. Nurses on hand would be able to offer immediate assistance to anyone in distress. McKeown said sites like the one proposed for The Works offers a multitude of benefits to clients, as evidenced by the more than 90 safe injection sites that have opened up around the world. “They first reduce the number of overdose deaths, and for me that’s the biggest public health problem we’re trying to address here,” he said. Given that Toronto has seen a 56 per cent increase in overdose deaths from 2004 to 2014, that is not something that can simply be dismissed. “(Safe injection sites) also reduce behaviours that lead to the transmission of communicable diseases (such as HIV and hepatitis C,)” McKeown said. He added that, by using the services available at safe injection sites, drug users gain increased access to additional health care services and counselling which they might not otherwise have. Beyond that, he said, there are fewer people injecting drugs in public and fewer discarded needles on the street. Importantly, he noted that there is no evidence linking safe injection sites to a growth in street crime in the surrounding area. “It doesn’t seem to happen, and that’s been shown in cities around the world,” he said. Hopkins noted that The Works does not have a set plan on how the safe injection site would be run as of yet. “We would talk to our clients

and ask questions, like how often would they use it, what time of day, weekdays or weekend,” she said. “We would also be looking to see what kinds of drugs (clients) use, how often they inject and whether they’ve ever overdosed before.” As part of the meeting, members of the public were asked to fill out a questionnaire asking them to describe the neighbourhood and outline any benefits or concerns they foresee should The Works become home to a safe injection site. A report on the public consultations is due back before the Toronto Board of Health by July 4. Those looking to weigh in on the matter can do so at www.toronto-sis.ca “This is the beginning of the conversation and not the end,” WongTam said. “One thing I’m gathering is there’s a real drive and a thirst and a quest for more information.”
LCBO’s Giving Back In Our Community program raises $1.6 million for SickKids Funds go toward alcohol and substance abuse programs LCBO shoppers gave back in record amounts last December, donating a total of $1.6 million to the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) through the Giving Back In Our Community
program. Those shopping at Toronto area LCBO locations were asked to tack a $2, $5 or $10 donation to their purchases, with funds going largely toward SickKids programs focusing on alcohol and substance abuse. Those programs include online education platform AboutKidsHealth (www.aboutkidshealth.ca), a substance abuse program for teens and research into fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. “We are extremely grateful for the generous support of LCBO customers and employees who helped us raise more than $1.6 million in donations this year,” said Seanna Millar, vicepresident of corporate partnerships with the SickKids Foundation.

Finding safe zones to trade is key to sharing economy >>>from page 1 equipment, sports equipment and more. Members simply pay an annual membership fee to get unlimited access to tools, which they can access at four locations across Toronto. The tools are maintained and repaired, ensuring they are always in working order. Offering up the option to borrow tools – including power tools – benefits users in multiple ways, said TTL co-founder and president of the Institute for a ResourceBased Economy Lawrence Alvarez. He noted that the traditional option – buying tools even if you were only going to use them once or twice – is hugely wasteful. “It’s wasteful to your pocket because who wants to buy these things, it’s wasteful to your time to look for them and acquire them and it’s also of course wasteful to space in your house, which you do not have a lot of, and
it’s wasteful to the environment,” he said. Alvarez noted that the sharing economy is poised to become an even bigger part of people’s lives.
“
I could see sharing resource hubs – think of it like a sharing mall, where you can go and get anything you want without having to buy and store it. – Lawrence Alvarez, president of the Institute for a ResourceBased Economy
“I could see shar ing resource hubs – think of it like a sharing mall, where you can go and get anything you want without having to buy and store it,” he said. Bunz is perhaps as grass-
roots a success story as you’re likely to see. It was started up by Emily Bitze as a means to fill a need of her own. She was looking for a can of tomatoes to make pasta sauce and started up a Facebook group between friends through which swaps could be arranged. From there, it has grown to a much larger community with some 40,000 members. “I simply had a hard time making ends meet,” Bitze said of Bunz’s humble origins. “Being a bit of a collector, I had a lot of things and thought I could trade some of those things for other things I needed, like food.” Bunz offers a huge variety of items for trade – appliances, clothes and even leftover food and well-wishes – with many sellers asking for nothing in return. “There’s definitely been

made.” Key to the sharing economy is finding safe zones for trades to take place. The Toronto Tool Library has people come to their own locations to borrow tools, while both Kijiji and Bunz encourage people to meet in neutral, safe areas when looking to make an exchange. Bunz also has a feedback option where members can rate and review others. Whether looking to cut corners on spending, cut down their own waste or save space, the sharing economy is here to stay. “It’s not like we’ve come up with some crazy new idea,” Bitze said. “It just makes sense.” For more information on the Toronto Tool Library, visit www.torontotoollibrary. com To become a member of Bunz, visit www.bunz. com and use member code 777777.

a lot of quirky stuff,” Bitze said. “Someone on our app wanted to re-propose to his wife, so he got a bunch of Bunz members to go down
to Yonge-Dundas Square and help him do that,” she said. “A lot of people will trade away leftovers because they can’t finish the food they
