JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Following a successful first year, Open Streets TO is returning to the downtown core for a second round of fun. The event effectively closes off stretches of Yonge and Bloor streets to allow for activations that promote exercise, recreation and healthy living. The pedestrian- and bike-friendly event brought some 25,000 Torontonians out on two separate days last summer. This year, organizers are hoping to bring as many, if not more, Torontonians out to enjoy their city’s streets while the weather is warm and welcoming. “There were a lot of smiles and a lot of happy people being active,” said event spokesperson Emily Munroe. While many enjoyed simply being able to walk or bike along Yonge and Bloor without dealing with cars, thousands more participated in the activations themselves, which saw a variety of activities, exercise and artistic opportunities, live music and more. “We had a wonderful diversity of people from the community >>>PEDESTRIANS, page 6

Earthquake survivor returns to Nepal to help Power Skating Academy co-founder Laura Levtov creates not-for-profit JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Having narrowly survived April’s earthquake in Nepal, downtown Toronto resident Laura Levtov has a firsthand knowledge of the havoc it wreaked. Now Levtov is looking to make her way back to do what she can to improve the lives of the people living in the remote village where she was staying when magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck April 25, killing more than 8,000 people and injuring thousands more. Levtov was renting a house in the village of Nawalpur, with plans to use a rented house to host a retreat where artists could stay and share their talents with the villagers. It was pure happenstance that she was not in the house when the earthquake struck, razing it to the ground. “I was just going to Kathmandu to meet one of the skaters (from the Power Skating Academy, a hockey school company Levtov cofounded) and her mother, and we were going to climb Everest,” Levtov said. “I was probably in the Jeep about a minute and a half when (the earthquake) hit.” At first, it did not even dawn on Levtov that she

was experiencing an earthquake. The roads in the area are naturally bumpy, and even when she saw a row of old buildings collapse, she said “my first thought was that they were old, not that there was an earthquake.” Fortunately, Levtov’s Jeep was not struck by the boulders that wound up coming down a nearby mountain, closing off the street, but that did not mean she and those with her were safe. “We didn’t know whether the whole area was going to go into the river, whether the ground was going to open up and swallow us whole or whether boulders were going to come down and get us,” she said. She and those with her – including a young Nepali woman named Sandhyu who Levtov calls her “Nepali daughter” – managed to weather the earthquake and spent the first night after it hit sleeping out in the wild. They had water thanks to Levtov buying a large quantity from one of the few nearby stores, and isogenic protein shakes that she had packed for her Mount Everest climb. “We had some supplies, but we were out in the open and there were wild

Teen scientist honoured JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com At an age where many of his peers spend their days playing video games and getting their Netflix fix, 17-year-old Michael Liu has already helped devise a potential new method for HIV detection, worked on a possible method of stroke recovery and helped combat mental illness among young people. Liu, a recent graduate of University of Toronto Schools downtown, has always been academically-

oriented, though he was not always passionate about science. “From a young age, I’ve always been interested in learning – I love learning more about things in general,” he said. “Then, after Grade 7/8, I had a fantastic science teacher and got into the Brain Bee, which is kind of an introduction to neuroscience courses.” His newfound love of science led Liu and research partner Bill Jia to a fourth-place finish at the 2014 Sanofi BioGENEius Challenge Canada. The two

developed a concept for a new testing method that could potentially be used to test for HIV. Their solution calls for a chip that could detect the virus in tiny amounts of blood. “Reactions with (the chip) could detect any molecules, any protein, and we looked at HIV,” he said. “The method’s a lot faster (than traditional testing) and because it works with microfluidics, it could reduce the cost of a $50 HIV test to five or 10 cents.” Following that discovery, >>>Liu, page 15

mode at a time like that.” The next day, Levtov and her group made their way to Kathmandu, where they slept in a tent city in a park.

While the idea of living in such conditions may make some blanch, Levtov knew better than to take the modest accommodations for granted. “By North American standards, we were in a tent city but by Nepali standards, it was the lap of luxury,” she said. “We had tents, a playground nearby and running water from an outhouse nearby.” As the days passed and banks and other modern necessities started opening back up, Levtov was able to make her way back home. She never forgot her harrowing experience there, or the people with whom she survived the earthquake. Once back in Canada, she started up Freedom on Ice: Nepal, a not-forprofit that is being run through the Power Skating Academy. The organization aims to improve the quality of life for Nepali people through education, arts and recreation, particularly for girls. “In talking to the village elders (in Nawalpur), they want their children to be able to be competitive in the international market,” Levtov said. “The village can only be described as being from about 300 years ago, so they need help being brought into the 21st century.” That will come through world-class education for all. Through the generosity

of various donors, Levtov is working to rebuild the school in Nawalpur and build a “learning community centre” next to it. The new building is being built to be earthquake-proof. “It’s going to be a lifechanging building,” Levtov said. “It will be a place where they can learn about music, arts, dance, drama and so much more, and it will be a safe space for the community if another earthquake hits.” The educational opportunities will be particularly helpful for young women in the village, many of whom are married off young and are dissuaded from learning. “The education for women will range from basic nutrition to hygiene to anything they can dream of,” Levtov said. “We want to pass on the words of Walt Disney, who said ‘If you can dream it, you can achieve it.’” Levtov will be returning to Nepal later this month. Her son Mark and “Nepali daughter” Sandhya have provided humanitarian aid in the country since the earthquake and Levtov’s efforts will help bring new hope to the community. Pay attention to federal campaign

A

federal election. Oh yes, almost forgot, didn’t you? It was an unusual (some would say cynical) move by Prime Minister Stephen Harper to drop the writ in the middle of the August long weekend – effectively extending the official campaign up to the Oct. 19 voting day by another few weeks. It’s understandably challenging, with weeks left in summer, for voters to begin pondering their choices. Moreso, even with a number of candidates already declared, the official cut-off date for nominations doesn’t arrive until late September. But here we are. For better or worse, the campaign is on. And for Toronto, in the midst of the typical rhetoric, mud-slinging and sloganeering that comes with any election campaign, residents must take a hard look at what the candidates and their parties vow to do for this city. Twenty-five of the our view 338 members of Parliament will be coming from Toronto. That’s a percentage – regardSpeak loudly significant less of party affiliation of its memon Toronto’s bers, Toronto’s representatives need to be vocal about the city’s priorities needs. So for residents, it’s worth paying attention to the campaign. For candidates, it’s worth crafting thoughtful, evidence-based platforms to address ongoing challenges the city faces. Hint: Transit comes to mind. This election will see a number of changes. Particularly downtown and in the north and eastern parts of the city, there are a number of boundary changes. This is brought about in part by the creation of new ridings including Don Valley North in North York, and Scarborough-Rouge Park and Scarborough North in Scarborough; Trinity-Spadina, downtown, has been replaced with University-Rosedale and Spadina-Fort York. Once a Liberal bastion federally, the city in 2011 saw a healthy mix of Liberal, NDP and Conservative candidates elected. It will be interesting to see if that trend continues. According to statistics from Elections Canada, the voter turnout in 2011 was 61.1 per cent, up from the historic low of 58.8 per cent in 2008, but still one of the lower voter turnouts in Canadian federal election history. That number needs to be higher. It may be the dog days of summer. There may be other things on your mind. Just remember that this is already ongoing.

column

OK...Blue Jays...let’s – talk – noise! When long-time Blue Jays radio announcer Jerry Howarth is calling a game, the moment the Jays start putting runs up on the board he gleefully exudes: “The Blue Jays are in flight.” Well, if he were commenting on the reaction of Jays fans to seeing the explosive firepower of the American League’s highest scoring team, “in flight” doesn’t go far enough. “In orbit” is more like it. And it’s not just runs that are igniting fan response lift off. Great plays in the field do it, too. So do stolen bases, strikeouts of an opposing batter, bullpen saves, walks, balks, you name it. Heck, fans are even going gaga over simple player introductions. Take the ones for fivetime all-stars, shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and pitching ace David Price, who were recently acquired within 48 hours of each other just prior to the trade deadline. When they simply made their first appearance at the

jamie wayne guest column plate and on the mound respectively, the Rogers Centre crowd erupted. My how times have changed, eh? Back in August 1992, prior to the Jays’ first World Series title, Dave Winfield made an impassioned plea to the oftdescribed reserved – as in audibly restrained – fan base to make noise. The 2015 version now screams at the drop of a hat. Or bat. Likely a rosin bag, too, the way things are going. The players are impressed and humbly appreciative. Price said it’s the best crowd he’s ever experienced. Reliever Mark Lowe, who just came over from the Seattle Mariners, knows first-hand that when the Jays play in Seattle, Jays fans out-scream the locals. While the decibel level around here has been

higher since the trade deadline acquisitions that also included left-fielder Ben Revere and reliever LaTroy Hawkins, the crowd has been rocking since the preseason began. Off-season pickup catcher Russell Martin was the recipient of several standing ovations in Montreal during a two-game exhibition series with the Cincinnati Reds. The other big name off-season addition, third baseman Josh Donaldson, for whom the crowd now chants “M-V-P”, has repeatedly brought the audience to its feet since opening day. The dazzling highlightreel catches by centre fielder Kevin Pillar have inspired the same mania, as have the slick defensive gems by second baseman Ryan Goins. The timely slugging of Chris Colabello and Justin Smoak has also not gone unnoticed. Nor has the inning-eating dependability of hurlers Mark Buehrle, R.A. Dickey and Marco Estrada.

The youthful relieving tandem of 23-year-old set-up man Aaron Sanchez and 20-year-old closer Roberto Osuna are also making hearts and vocal chords go pit-a-pat. When you add stalwarts Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion into the mix, it’s apparent there is something special going on. And this fandemonium is all just for the regular season. Imagine what the joint will sound like if they make it to the World Series. So, Dave Winfield, if you’re reading this and you’re coming to the Rogers Centre for the sold-out series with the Yankees this weekend, a word of warning. I wouldn’t bring my noise meter along, unless you’ve got a really good device insurance plan.

More than 150,000 visitors expected for annual festival >>>from page 1 Sullivan Street to St. Andrew, the event is expected to bring an enormous number of visitors to the area over two days. “What we’re trying to do is to bring more people to Chinatown so that the businesses here will do well,” said Chinatown BIA Chair Tony Yu at a festival launch event last Thursday. “It’s the biggest annual event we organize and we expect to see over 150,000 people in the streets of Chinatown to celebrate this great event with us.” The festival’s theme will be The Forbidden City, named for China’s imperial palace from 1420 to 1912. The Forbidden City had an aura of mystery as it was closed off to anyone who was not given express permission to enter or leave by the Emperor of China. “It is an icon full of Chinese history,” Yu said. “We want to introduce this grand Chinese landmark at our festival to show a little bit of our Chinese history to the public.” Toronto Chinatown Festival Co-Chair Steven Pho noted there will be plenty of food, live music, a variety of martial arts performances and more. FESTIVAL LAUNCH: Helping to launch the 2015 version of the Toronto Chinatown Festival last Thursday at Dim Sum King Restaurant are Toronto police Supt. Frank Bergen, left; Toronto Chinatown Festival co-chair Sunny Liu; Councillor Joe Cressy; Chinatown BIA chair Tony Yu; mascot Da Mao; OLG Slots Woodbine’s Andre Gonsalves; Chinatown BIA vice-chair Peter Chen; and Toronto Chinatown Festival co-chair Steven Pho.

Cressy said the festival is the result of collaboration between organizers, local businesses and the BIA, sponsors and the City of Toronto. “Chinatown really represents the heart of our city,” he said. “Everything comes together right here in Chinatown. “This part of the city reflects the diversity of a great city, it reflects

the entrepreneurial spirit of a great city and the history and legacy of Chinese-Canadians who have built this great city.” For the first time ever, the Toronto Chinatown Festival will feature a stage sponsored by OLG Slots Woodbine, which will host mixed martial arts demonstrations. The TD Bank Stage will host an array of

Pedestrians set to take over Bloor and Yonge streets again >>>from page 1 who hosted activations along the route,” Munroe said. “It was very grassroots, with a community focus, and we had everything from dancing and skipping to games.” She noted that live music along the route provided a festive atmosphere and had people dancing in the streets. Munroe added the activations were designed to create a healthier and happier Toronto, bringing people together in the name of fun, community spirit and good health. This year’s activations will continue that theme, offering printmaking, a hands-on DJ workshop, science experiments, flash mobs, street painting, street hockey, Zumba, a mobile dental clinic, bike clinics, square dancing and more. “It’s all about experiencing the streets in a new way,” Munroe said, adding boosting pedestrian traffic along the streets also promises to help businesses in the area

Local para-sport athletes share their stories

PUSH! runs through to Friday night in Distillery District JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com As para-sport athletes showcase their skills and determination throughout the Parapan Am Games, a group of Canadian athletes are offering a glimpse at the other side of athletics. PUSH!, a part of the ongoing Panamania arts programs, brings six athletes who have excelled at their chosen para-sports together for an intimate show that sees them share their stories, triumphs and challenges. Midtown Toronto resident Sarai Demers, who got involved in alpine skiing at the age of eight despite losing a leg when she was but a year old after being born without a hip or femur, said appearing on stage

poses a new challenge. “We’re not actors, we’re athletes, but we’ll be there telling our real stories,” she said. “It’s not just a focus on disabilities, it’s a look at different struggles.” Demers works as a social worker and is used to having others share their stories with her. Turning the tables was difficult, but rewarding. “It’s really empowering for me to get a chance to talk about it,” she said. “I hope by doing this, it creates more awareness, more funding and more support for (para-sport) athletes.” Fellow midtown resident and PUSH! performer Martha Sandoval Gustafson has competed for her native Mexico and for her adopted country of Canada in a variety of sports, including track

or dedication for sports. “I feel much better mentally and physically when I do all kinds of sports,” she said, adding having physical disability does not need to impose limitations. Downtown Toronto resident Paul Rosen, a former sledge hockey goaltender, has worked as a motivational speaker and done on-air commentary for sledge hockey, but said taking his own story to the stage poses a new challenge. “The hardest part for me in this is the script – I’m used to telling my story, but it’s different when you’re working with other people and following set lines,” he said.

Rosen lost a leg at the age of 39, but didn’t let that deter him from competing in athletics. “I just want everyone to realize that just because someone looks different, it doesn’t mean they’re not as able,” he said. PUSH! will allow audiences to share in the highs and lows of those three athletes, as well as those of swimmer Jenna Lambert, rower Victoria Nolan and equestrian Jody Schloss. The show is being staged by Tangled Art + Disability, a not-for-profit that helps promote and advance the work of artists with disabilities. It opened Tuesday and will run through Friday, Aug. 14 at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts, 50 Tank House Lane, in the Distillery District. Maple Leafs turn season around

Tough playoff loss HARD TACKLE: The Toronto Mooredale U-15 soccer squad saw their Ontario Cup provincial championship aspirations come to an end Saturday, losing a Tier 1 quarter-final game 3-1 to Vaughan Azzurri at De La Salle College at Farnam Avenue and Avenue Road. The Toronto Maple Leafs baseball squad generated a couple of impressive comebacks to close out their opening round, best-of-seven Intercounty Baseball League (IBL) series against the Brantford Red Sox in five games. Toronto had finished in sixth place in the regular season with a 15-21 record while Brantford was third at 22-13. Toronto clinched the series last Friday in Brantford 12-7, overcoming a 7-3 deficit. But their epic double-comeback was reserved for last Wednesday at home 16-15 in 10 innings. First Toronto had to overcome a 12-0 deficit to send the game into extra innings tied at 13-13. Then when Brantford scored two in the top of the 10th, Toronto then scored three to win. Toronto has now drawn the firstplace Barrie Baycats (28-7) in the league semifinal. The best-of-seven series has already kicked off with the opener in Barrie Tuesday and the second game at Christie Pits last night. Game 3 is in Barrie Saturday at 7 p.m. and Game 4 is at Christie Pits Sunday at 2 p.m. For more info, visit theibl.ca/

Liu to study Liberal Arts at Harvard >>>from page 3 Liu began work with esteemed professor Molly Shoichet on a team looking to find ways to help people recover more fully from stroke. They worked with a hydrogel that could be used to carry stem cells into stroke-affected parts of the brain. Strokes are caused by clots in arteries or blood vessels in the brain, and cut off the supply of oxygen, nutrients and glucose to sections, killing cells. While there are treatments that break down the clots, the cells remain dead. “Usually if you inject stem cells into the brain, the stem cells just die,” Liu said. “We found that if you put the stem cells in the gel, though, it keeps them alive.” Liu’s time at University of Toronto Schools helped to foster his love of learning, though he admits the competition among students there tends to be fierce. While he said the students

and staff were supportive, he acknowledged the fact that everyone was competing for top marks led to a great deal of stress. “People can obsess over the smallest things – one per cent (in grades) – so a lot of people opened up about anxiety and depression,” he said. “I went through a phase of that, thinking I wasn’t good enough or that things were out of my control.” Transparent approach Because of the school’s transparent approach to mental health, however, Liu was able to address the issue openly instead of suffering in silence. Armed with the knowledge gleaned from his own experiences, he became an executive with UTS’ Positive Mental Health Initiative to help break down the stigma surrounding mental health issues. He has also worked with Kids Help Phone, helping

to develop an interface for boys aged 12 to 18. “It’s got games they can play, it focuses on teamwork and as (participants) progress, they’re able to communicate more,” he said. With all those accomplishments already under his belt, Liu is now headed to Harvard University, where he plans to study Liberal Arts despite his strong foundation in science. “One thing a lot of scientists don’t have is the ability to really share their ideas,” he said. “I’m hoping to take the experience I already have and work on being able to present (scientific findings) in a more economic and social context.” For his work, Liu was named one of Plan Canada’s Top 20 Under 20, which recognizes youth who are making a difference in the world.
