Mandela anniversary walk MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com We are still on the road Nelson Mandela walked toward a fairer society, and next June 20 in Toronto, Mandela – from wherever he is now – will “walk hand in hand with each of us,” Lloyd McKell said. And that march will be on one of Toronto’s main boulevards, University Avenue, now named Nelson Mandela

Boulevard in his honour, McKell told supporters of the event at city hall. Many had personal reasons for joining the Spirit of Mandela Freedom Walk, which marks the 25th anniversary of the late South African president’s first visit to Toronto in 1990. “Mandela has made an indelible mark on my heart,” said Ramie Veerappan, who was born in a different South Africa, one ruled by a brutal system treating

persons of colour like herself as lesser human beings. “While I was growing up I thought that this was normal,” said Veerappan, who fled apartheid-era South Africa, “a country which I never belonged to,” for Canada, but returned to see her homeland in all its beauty after, she said, Mandela and other heroes of the African National Congress “gave us our country back.” >>>MANDELA, page 8

Hodgson rink re-opens, but so will ‘Skinnamarink’ JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com A year after being shut down due to an ammonia leak, midtown Toronto’s Hodgson ice rink is back up and running better than ever. Patients at the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) got a special holiday treat when a group of elves made their way to the health care facility with the aid of a military escort. The elves – servicemen and servicewomen of the Royal Canadian Air Force – flew from Canadian Forces Base Borden to Billy Bishop Airport before being escorted by 400 Tactical Helicopter Squadron to the hospital. The visit was part of Operation HO HO HO, an annual event that brings RCAF members to the downtown Toronto health care facility to spread cheer and presents. “Our support this year was fantastic,” said RCAF Cpl Kelly Cardwell during the Dec. 3 event. “We wound up with more than enough volunteers and we brought 574 presents for the kids here.” That number made this a banner year for the elves. “When I started three years ago, I was told we needed a minimum of 200 or 250 toys, so it’s great to have so many more to share,” Cardwell said. The gifts were collected in Simcoe Region and in the GTA, through the generosity

of donors. The elves took time to chat with patients who were able to leave their hospital rooms before ensuring each of them had a present to unwrap. They then toured other parts of the hospital, going room to room to visit patients who were unable to attend the larger function. SickKids Child Life Specialist Susie Petro said the visit from the elves is always a highlight for children at the hospital. It serves as the unofficial kick-off to the facility’s holiday events, and provides plenty of thrills for patients. “They also do something fun – this year they’re doing bingo and in past years, they’ve had storytellers and other things,” Petro said. The elves themselves brought plenty of smiles and

laughter, joking around with the kids, helping them with arts and crafts, and eliciting plenty of high fives. Eight-year-old Keir AshDawson loved getting a chance to talk to the elves, even if she was slightly surprised at the sight of them. “They’re pretty big and usually elves are small,” she said. “It’s really fun having them here and makes your spirit come back. I wish Christmas was every day.” SickKids parent Jaclyn Howell was extremely thankful for the holiday cheer the elves spread to children throughout the hospital. “This is heartwarming to see people volunteer their time and do so much just to bring smiles,” she said. “They’re making everyone’s day brighter here today.”

Midtown rink opens ahead of schedule with two ice pads >>>from page 1 giving the city a hard time about even renewing the lease there,” Matlow said. Thanks to the community’s efforts, and with help from TDSB Trustee Shelley Laskin, the midtown rink was completely rebuilt, allowing local leagues and families to continue to enjoy the facility. Two ice pads will allow for permitted league games and shinny games or free skates to take place simultaneously. “What we have there now is a modern, new and improved rink,” Matlow noted. The rink opened at the end of November, ahead of sched-

ule. City staff had originally suggested it would likely be reopened in mid-December, but had warned that it could be shut down even longer than that. Even though Hodgson will once again be open for both recreational and organized skates, there are plans to once again implement the solution the community used last winter to make up for the loss of their beloved rink. “Last year, as a stopgap measure while the rink was shut down to the ammonia leak, myself and a number of neighbourhood parents made a natural rink across the street

in June Rowlands Park,” the councillor said. “It was near what I had named the Sharon, Lois & Bram Playground, so we called the natural rink the Skinnamarink. While Hodgson is up and running again, we’re still planning on having the natural rink.” To celebrate the reopening of the Hodgson ice rink, Matlow will host a community skating party with free coffee and hot cider by local retailer Aroma from noon to 2 p.m. on Sunday. The rink is behind Hodgson Public School at Mount Pleasant Road and Davisville Avenue.

Blu Matter Project aims to help people with mental illness Resident advocates yoga to help alleviate stress JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com

W

hether due to shorter days, a lack of sunlight, holiday stress or other factors, winter tends to bring about a spike in depression. Few know that better than downtown Toronto resident Linda Malone, founder of the not-forprofit organization Blu Matter Project. The organization pairs up those dealing with depression and bipolar disorder with yoga studios to help alleviate stress. Malone lost her brother Michael to suicide in 2012. The 24-year-old had not been diagnosed with depression or bipolar disorder, but it quickly became evident that he was struggling with some form of mental illness. “One of the things I didn’t know is that when someone commits suicide,

the police take your computer and phone and hack into them to rule out cyberbullying,” Malone said. “When I got (the electronics) back, I started retracing Michael’s steps to see if I could figure out what was happening with him and he had been investigating bipolar and depression on the internet. It seemed pretty clear he didn’t know where to go.” Malone has long been a yoga advocate, leaving a stressful sales position with a large corporation to start up IAM Yoga studios. “I ended up with adrenal fatigue at 26 and decided to get a better understanding of how to live in the healthiest way,” she said. Yoga was a natural fit, offering not only fitness benefits, but also mindfulness and relaxation benefits. The activity has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety in those dealing with mental illness.

Linda Malone, founder of the Blu Matter Project, which facilitates free yoga instruction for those living with depression and bipolar disorder.

“It bolsters your immune system, it bolsters your nervous system and it promotes a healthy lifestyle,” Malone said. She added studies have shown yoga can even help participants rewire neural pathways. Because some of the positions can be chal-

lenging, it forces those who do it to deal with discomfort in a positive way. “It can help people reprogram their existing day-to-day, low to mid-level stress responses,” Malone said. Though she touts its benefits, Malone notes

yoga is hardly a cure-all for those dealing with stress, anxiety, depression or other conditions. She advocates its use in tandem with other therapies, from counselling to medicine. “Mindfulness is part of a multi-pronged approach

that’s necessary when dealing with (mental health conditions),” she said. That multi-pronged approach is needed during the cold, dark months of winter. Seasonal affective disorder adds to an already vast list of things that can bring about feelings of depression. IAM Yoga has special classes – Neuro Yoga and Antidote Yoga – to help counter negative feelings. “Suicide rates are higher in December than at any other time of year, so we’re holding some free classes at IAM Yoga throughout the month and during the dark months of January, February and into March,” Malone said. The Blu Matter Project has partnered with the University of Toronto to study certain impacts of yoga on those with depression and bipolar disorder. Ruby Million Match helps women fleeing abusive relationships JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com For roughly six decades, Julia Ruby was a staunch supporter of women in Canada. Thanks to her five daughters, her legacy will live on. Ruby’s daughters, Jan, Joanna, Julia, Mary and Victoria, have pledged a donation of up to $1 million to the YWCA Toronto’s December 6 Fund. The fund provides interest-free microloans to help women cover their costs and rebuild their lives as they flee situations of violence. The gift, dubbed the Ruby Million Match, was officially announced at the YWCA Toronto’s downtown Toronto location Thursday, Dec. 4 in honour of the longtime YWCA volunteer. “When she retired from (military) service overseas in 1946, she came to the YWCA and started a six-decade long career here,” said Jan Ruby.

“The Y was, by far, the most important thing in her life apart from her family. She did everything here from sitting at the head of the long table (as president of the board) to screwing in lightbulbs.” While she did not have the capacity to help out as much later in life as she did as a younger woman, Julia Ruby remained close to the organization virtually right up until her death in 2006 at the age of 89. Her daughters’ donation will see the next $1 million donated to the YWCA’s December 6 Fund matched. “This fund is a glove fit for what my parents would have wanted,” Jan Ruby said. “At the core of everything she did, my mother wanted to make sure every woman was safe.” The fund has helped roughly 1,300 women as they have taken the brave but crucial steps needed to leave vio-

Jan Ruby, left, and her sisters donated $1 million to the organization’s Dec. 6 Fund, which helps women like Phyllis John, centre, as they flee situations of violence. YWCA Toronto executive director Heather McGregor, right, was also on hand when the fund was unveiled on Thursday, Dec. 4.

lent relationships. Founded in 1994 by a small group jolted into action by the Montreal Massacre, where 28 people, mostly women, were shot at the École Polytechnique in

Montreal, Quebec on Dec. 6, 1989, the fund was eventually placed under the auspices of YWCA Toronto. “It had been a standalone thing, but (the founders)

didn’t have the same kind of infrastructure we have here to support it,” said YWCA Toronto CEO Heather McGregor. The fund had made an immense difference in the lives of women such as Phyllis John, who accessed a microloan as a single mom when she had trouble making rent after ending a long-term relationship in which she faced physical and verbal abuse. “I was struggling to deal with the financial impact (of leaving),” John said. “Having the fund available to me was a godsend. It allowed me and my children to be housed.” She acknowledged that financial concerns can weigh heavily on women when they are looking to leave violent situations, particularly if they have children. The December 6 Fund gives them a boost as they make the transition to safer living arrangements.

Recipients are also given leeway when it comes to repayment. “There’s a window period where you inform them if you’re unable to make a payment for whatever reason,” John said. Still, the microloans have an extremely high rate of repayment, due in part to the fact that the women who receive them realize the money will go toward helping other women in need. The Ruby daughters’ $1 million matching donation will also go a long way toward ensuring as many women as possible can access the help they need. “We would like to be able to – and now we will be able to – provide more loans, more counselling and more support,” McGregor said.

Small measures can make a big impact on the transit file

Write us

G

etting people moving in this city – on our roads and transit routes – is a complicated, political endeavour. Historically, the file moves about as fast as the traffic on the Gardiner Expressway during rush hour, ever frustrating commuters whose lives are impacted daily by the city’s choked arteries. That’s why it’s refreshing to see some immediate, tangible measures being taken to ease our traffic woes. Mayor John Tory’s recently announced initiatives are minor in nature compared to talk of mass transit solutions, but they make the best of a difficult situation by effecting change now. And when compounded over time, these little measures may add up to major improvements. At least something’s being done, and our view that action is breathing some new life into the transit conversation Toronto. It’s critical we conReview small in tinue to build on this momentum. Tory’s plan calls for several changes to things: the immediate towing of see effect cars and trucks illegally parked on major roads during rush hour, adding more arterial road cameras, ramping up the installation of re-timed traffic signals scheduled for next year, extending work hours on construction sites for large infrastructure projects and making private-sector firms pay more for the privilege of closing lanes and boulevards for construction. On Monday morning, Tory also made official the all-door boarding of the 504 King streetcar (though many streetcar operators have already been allowing this due to overcrowding). That same day, Toronto police launched their own anti-gridlock campaign to help get us moving. These initiatives are promising, but there’s still much to do. Long-term strategy is key and that’s already underway with a request for a SmartTrack feasibility study coming from executive committee last week. There needs to be ongoing public consultation. A review process also needs to be in place to see if these short-term measures are having the intended effect – something also called for by JeanPierre Boutros, a former city hall and TTC insider who spoke with us last week. Fixing the transit problem in Toronto is a big picture kind of dilemma. But these quick wins deliver some much-needed momentum at a time when the transit file’s been all but stalled at the gate.

How do you solve a problem like Mammoliti? The voters of Ward 7 returned Giorgio Mammoliti to office this year – in one of the least explicable electoral decisions this side of 2010. The long-serving city councillor is, after all, under investigation by police for a fundraiser that so egregiously violated the rules under which councillors operate, that council also docked three months of his pay. The one thing to say in defence of these perplexing constituents is that at least they don’t have a relationship with former members of the Sussex Group – a lobbying organization named prominently in the integrity commissioner’s report as contributing to the councillor’s $80,000 take from the 2013 fundraiser. The same cannot be said for Mayor John Tory, who hired two former members of the energetic lobbying organization as his senior staff: Chris Eby as his chief

david nickle the city of staff and Vic Gupta as his principal secretary. Those hires raised some eyebrows around city hall when it was announced shortly after the election. It wasn’t really a problem, until now – just a week after Tory pushed the appointment of Mammoliti to two influential (and potentially influence-able) bodies, the committee that appoints members of the committee of adjustment, and the board of Exhibition Place. Mammoliti has now come forward with a request to cover $48,000 in legal bills he’s accumulated, attempting to strike down the report from the integrity commissioner, and restore the $26,000 in pay he’s lost. The audacity would be shocking in any other

councillor than Mammoliti, whose torqueing of the entitlements of office has been almost a secondary career to the one he’s used as councillor. It’s still noteworthy – Mammoliti’s transgressions nearly always are – but it also resurrects uncomfortable questions about the embryonic Tory administration. One could sense last week that Tory and his team had realized they’d made something of an error, at least in supporting Mammoliti for the committee of adjustment appoint-

ment body. A motion by Scarborough-Agincourt Councillor Norm Kelly, to add more members to that committee (and so dilute the individual influence of each councillor) passed easily. The Exhibition Place appointment went through easily, despite objections from Councillor Mike Layton. None of this, of course, suggests that Tory or his team are actively behaving improperly, or that there’s anything legally wrong with appointing the dulyre-elected Mammoliti to boards and committees for which he’s eligible. But appearance is important in politics, and it sets a tone early in the term – and the tone that the mayor’s tacit support of Giorgio Mammoliti sets is a troubling one.

Ricardo Jota promises to make digital world even faster Research team has 10 patents pending JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com As society moves further into the technological era, people expect information at their fingertips as quickly as possible. New research by downtown Toronto resident and University of Toronto postdoctoral fellow Ricardo Jota promises to make the digital world even faster. Jota and his team have come up with a way to cut down on the standard 75 to 100 millisecond lag on touch screens, essentially reducing latency to zero. “When you use a touch screen, the object you’re swiping trails your finger,” Jota said. “The lag there is today doesn’t seem like much, but it was an interesting question to ask: what if we made (swiped objects) move as if they were in real life? Would that make

a difference?” In studies so far, the difference has been stark. Not only have the testers preferred latency-free swiping, it actually improved their performance on simple tasks. While some may find the latency on phones, tablets and touch screen computers to be negligible, Jota said it is largely accepted because, simply, people aren’t used to faster interfaces and have come to expect the current ones as status quo. He likens the difference to using new, high-powered home computers compared to the models that were popular 20 years ago, or to recent advances in television resolution. “It’s a lot like a really, really high resolution TV – it’s really, really crisp, and when you go back to an old one after seeing that, it looks really horrible,” he said. The new technology can be used in a variety of ways, from improving gaming performance for video gamers to potentially saving lives. “So many features in cars nowadays are on the dashboard, on touch screens,” Jota said. “People

sleigh your Fill for less this year!

He also pointed to emergency response teams, where even the slightest delay can result in a loss of life. The research team has managed to cut latency down to a single millisecond – far below the threshold

at which it can be perceived by human eyes. “Most people can’t perceive lag at 20 to 24 milliseconds, but some people can still perceive it,” he said. “To get it to where no human can see it, you have to go down to 10.” The team has 10 patents pending for its work, and hopes to launch products based on the research next year. Jota said there is the potential for both apps and improved hardware that speeds up latency. Jota was recently awarded a Mitacs Award for Outstanding Innovation – Post-Doctoral for his work in the field. Mitacs, a national not-for-profit organization, is dedicated to the promotion of Canadian research and training.

School gets grant and visit from rocker JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com A gift for the students at Sprucecourt Public School wound up making teacher Terrance Bristow feel like a kid again himself. Bristow received $20,000 from TD Canada Trust through the bank’s “Make Today Matter” campaign, with the funds going toward buying new musical instruments for the downtown school at which he teaches. The money ensured the school had much-needed money to cover a recent change there. “Recently, the school expanded from kindergarten to Grade 6 to Grade 8, so some of the programming needed to change,” Bristow said. “There weren’t enough funds allocated by the province to make sure our older students had instruments that would challenge them.” Bristow said he made a “wish list” of items he would like his students to have. Since he often speaks glowingly about his students outside of

work, word trickled out to his bank manager, who saw the opportunity to make a difference. “My bank manager said ‘I’m going to get someone to call you about donating money to the arts,’ but I thought it was just a survey or something,” Bristow said. He was shocked to receive the grant, which he used to buy new keyboards, drums, xylophones, glockenspiels, music stands and more. After supplying his school, there was $12,500 left over, which Bristow passed along to MusiCounts, an organization dedicated to promoting music education in schools. “Those instruments are fairly cost-prohibitive for schools,” the Sprucecourt teacher noted. As if the donation itself weren’t enough of a surprise, Bristow was doubly surprised

when Canadian rocker Sam Roberts dropped by the school for an impromptu concert when the teacher unveiled the new instruments to students. Bristow has been a fan of Roberts’ music since catching him in concert a few years ago, and said he was thrilled to get a chance to take the stage with the popular singer/ songwriter. “Sam has always had good lyrics,” Bristow said. “I wish I’d taught my kids some of his songs so we all could have played along with him, but I’m always getting them to create their own words to songs.” Roberts gave Bristow an autographed guitar at the concert. The instruments will definitely be a boon to the downtown school’s music classes, with students now able to learn on new, professional-calibre instruments. Bristow was keen to get the new instruments in the hands of his students as quickly as possible. “It’s definitely upped our winter concert,” he said.

Mandela Boulevard street signs to be officially unveiled next May >>>from page 1 The march from Front Street to Queen’s Park, where Mandela, who had been recently released from prison, addressed a huge crowd that had walked up University in 1990, won’t be a fundraiser, or a protest against any government, incident or individual, said McKell, who represents the Mandela Legacy Committee in Toronto.

Instead, the marchers will simply pledge what Mandela espoused: to live in harmony with equal opportunity for all – “an ideal for which I am prepared to die,” he once declared while on trial for his life. Freedom Walk, McKell said, will be an expression of our own commitment to a fair society, open to all who want to speak out against discrimination, or who “suffer loss of

dignity” due to their circumstances, or want to support victims of violence. It will document Canada’s successes in equity and human rights, but “recognize we have a long road to travel,” he added. A l r e a d y, t h e m a r c h h a s O n t a r i o Fa i r n e s s Commissioner Jean Augustine and former Lieutenant Governor David Onley among its honourary co-chairper-

sons. Leading it will be children from Nelson Mandela Park Public School, renamed in 2001 when Mandela – Madiba to South Africans – visited on his third and final journey to Canada. O n F r i d a y, M a s u m a Begum, an eighth grader from the downtown school, said Mandela was a very loyal and forgiving man who “did whatever he could to change

wrong to right.” “He fought for our freedom,” said Mahad Mohamud, a classmate. “Without him, there would still be segregation in our world.” The Freedom Walk also spotlights this year’s designation of University between Front and Queen’s Park as Nelson Mandela Boulevard. Staff rushed to get street signs bearing Mandela’s name up before Friday, the

first anniversary of his death, but their official unveiling will be on May 11, the day he took office as South Africa’s president, said Ceta Rankhalawansigh, a former Trinity-Spadina councillor. Mandela was made an “honourary Toronto citizen” in 1990. During his 2001 visit, he was declared an honourary citizen of Canada, the first living person to receive this honour.

Island Yacht Club receives lifeline from Toronto Island Marina owners MIKE ADLER

madler@insidetoronto.com

The floundering Island Yacht Club, built decades ago as a refuge from discrimination, may be saved by one of its neighbours. Jewish boaters, denied membership in other yacht clubs, opened their own on the Toronto islands in 1951, with “inclusiveness” as a guiding principle. But lifestyles have changed since, and the club, carved out of “a maze of trees, bushes, swamp and sand” on Mugg’s Island, was in decline before a 2004 fire destroyed its clubhouse. The IYC built a new clubhouse in 2006 but William Kassel, its commodore, told Toronto council’s executive committee its members haven’t returned. Though it “looks like the old days on the weekend” when visiting boats fill more of its 120 slips, the club has 41 voting members left and its cash flow is “perilously constrained,” said Kassel. The club “operates at a significant deficit” and owes

the city $251,000 in rent and property tax – money the city is unlikely to get if the IYC were to fall into receivership, a city report says. On Friday, Dec. 5, the committee approved an arrangement with principal owners of the Toronto Island Marina, who are prepared to repay the IYC’s debts and control dayto-day operations of the club. “We’re assuming all risks,” said Bill Duron, who with two other owners of the marina, Gary Lovas and Carl Lovas, will deal with the city on the IYC’s behalf. INVEST $1 MILLION The marina owners were prepared to invest $1 million in facilities at the club, whose docks, Duron said, “are in terrible disrepair” and are too short for today’s boats. Duron, who is also CEO of the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, said the 350-slip marina faced a similar situation in 2003, with “decrepit” buildings and sinking docks, but its owners took a risk to invest in the facility and, with support from boaters in 2005, won a

20-year lease from the city and is now at full occupancy. He asked, though, for the city to extend the IYC’s lease for five years, until July 31, 2030, because this would give a bank more certainty. The committee agreed. Pam McConnell, a visiting councillor whose ward includes the islands, recalled “the sadness of seeing (the clubhouse) burn,” but also how other yacht clubs had welcomed the members. Duron and his partners are “white knights,” who have turned the “mess” of a marina into a great facility, said McConnell, adding she’s confident their plan “to keep this boat afloat” will succeed for the IYC. As for the difficulty of attracting a new generation of boaters, Duron suggested the club could sell more “social memberships” – people who visit the IYC to use the kayaks, canoes, or the pool – to people living in waterfront condominiums. “ We c a n c r e a t e t h e Muskokas without having to go up the (Highway) 400,” he said.

Yonge Street Mission gearing up for the holidays JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com With Christmas fast approaching, the Yonge Street Mission ( YSM) is reaching out to the public to ensure no one goes without over the holidays. From ornament sales to its annual toy and food markets to community banquets, the downtown organization is

looking for donations of all types. “Christmas is a busy, but deeply meaningful time of year at the Yonge Street Mission,” said YSM president and CEO Angie Draskovic. “While there is hunger and misery in the city, there are also many compassionate people willing to buy gifts and donate food to provide their neighbours and their

children with some joy. We are so grateful for this support.” The month’s initiatives start with the mission’s yearly ornament sale, with proceeds going toward the mission’s many support services. Ornaments will be available in the PATH system beneath First Canadian Place, the Exchange Tower and Scotia Plaza from 11 a.m.

to 3 p.m. through to Dec. 12 and, again, Dec. 15 to 19, and at Winterfest at Queen’s Quay Terminal from noon to 4 p.m. on Dec. 13. The mission is also donating a huge array of toys to downtown residents through its annual toy market. The market allows at-risk families to make sure their kids have books, toys and games under the tree on Christmas morning. “The joy in a parent’s eyes, knowing they have toys and food for a wonderful Christmas for their family, is a great gift for us,” Draskovic said. The toy market runs from Dec. 15 through 23, and donors can drop toys off at 306 Gerrard St. E. The food market is an even more crucial program, providing good food to families that might otherwise have to go without over the holidays. “The Yonge Street Mission helps provide 9,000 individuals with some Christmas joy

Twelfth Annual BEARY MERRY Christmas 2014

Metroland Media Toronto is very proud to be the founder of the Beary Merry Christmas Campaign. For the 12th consecutive year, City Centre Mirror employees will deliver teddy bears to children spending the holidays in our local hospitals. We are so proud to have Samko & Miko as the official sponsor of this year’s teddy bears. As you can see, there are many other community minded businesses in the area that have generously purchased a bear for a needy child this season. We thank all of our partners for helping us put smiles on the faces of so many children this Holiday Season.

Hate crime inspires Annex resident to get people thinking and talking about racism JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com A five-minute trip to a Chinatown pharmacy is all it took to disturb Annex resident Alex Punzalan to the core. After filling a prescription for his sick five-year-old son, Punzalan returned to his vehicle to see the racial slur, “CHINK”, spraypainted on the side of his freshly painted vehicle. His immediate reaction was confusion followed by disbelief that he may have actually been racially targeted in a city and country that purports to embrace diversity. “I was just going to erase it,” Punzalan, who is Filipino, said during a recent interview. But instead of just accepting the hateful act, Punzalan – an artist who works in music and video production – said he felt inspired to use his skills to get people talking and thinking about the reality

that racism is alive and well even in a multicultural city like Toronto. Shortly after the incident, he posted an image of his vandalized vehicle with his thoughts on facebook. Dozens of people sounded off and shared words of support. On the evening after the hate crime in late November, Punzalan went down to The Entertainment District and projected the photos he took on a large cement wall of a building near Adelaide and Simcoe streets for 30 minutes, the amount of time it took for him to remove the hateful graffiti from his car. He added the hashtag #chinkracism to the bottom of the photos and sat back and quietly observed people’s reactions. “Some people were uncomfortable. Some laughed and made fun of it,” he said. “They don’t realize their ignorance.” Punzalan said he espe-

cially took note of the reactions Asian people had to the images; many of whom he observed seemed to take the racism to heart. “I knew it hit them, in ways that were too real,” he wrote in a followup post. Punzalan, who said he has experienced racism in the past but not in such an overt form, went on to say the experience made him realize when we don’t understand each other, it’s easy to be insensitive to our neighbours and as the city grows so does our ignorance. “It really got people thinking no matter what, and it got me thinking,” he said. The whole situation is especially ironic and hurtful for Punzalan who is actively involved in several organizations that highlight and celebrate diversity, including Kapwa Collective, fu-GEN Asian Canadian Theatre Co., Kapisanan Philippine Centre for the Arts and Culture and

Carlos Bulosan Theatre. He’s also a member of the Datu music group, which fuses Filipino music with modern sounds, as well as the Punzaramba Artist Family. “I’m heavily involved in the arts and I do a lot of things (that have to do) with identity,” he said, adding he doesn’t want people to feel sorry for him, just to be aware that racism still exists – even if it’s discreet – in Canada. “They picked the wrong person to mess with.” Punzalan also said it’s important youth be educated about racism and that solutions must be found to stop it. He vowed his children would know more about their roots and those of others because he’ll make the effort to do so. “We need to make personal efforts to bring us closer to equality. To keep us all on our feet and help destroy racism,” he wrote.

Toronto’s El Mocambo Tavern has been saved, but the city is still trying to get provincial heritage status for the music landmark and its neon sign. The effort started this fall when the Spadina Avenue rock club – where The Rolling Stones, the Ramones, U2 and countless other bands have played since 1946 – was about to close for good. Even the sign above its front door, a palm tree in green and yellow light, was said to be for sale on eBay.
