North Toronto artist Nandor Horthy paints from memory and uses his imagination JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com From the time North Toronto resident Nandor Horthy first came to Canada more than 50 years ago, he has been a part of the city’s art scene. Horthy came to Canada with his family in 1957 from his native Hungary following the Hungarian Revolution. Having studied art and music back home, he plied his trade in both upon settling here. “I played as a saxophone player where I could get work, but I realized music alone didn’t have any security,” he said. “I was doing commercial art on the side, so I spent my days playing saxophone at night and painting commercial art during the daytime.” He and his wife Eva quickly found their artistic talent was their key to success in their adopted country. They first settled in Winnipeg, but moved to Toronto less than a year later. “We spent half a year there, but as soon as we could get out of Winnipeg, we did,” Horthy said. They quickly fell in love with Toronto, in particular with the Cabbagetown neighbourhood they then called home. “It was very, very interesting coming from Europe and seeing all the Victorian architecture everywhere,” he said. “That was very new for us. Canada was all so interesting and new – boy, am I grateful that we came here.” H o r t h y ’s l o v e o f Cabbagetown architecture is evident in several of his works. His oeuvre is a mixture of still life paintings, landscapes, seascapes and city scenes, with several of the latter showcasing the downtown neighbourhood’s charm. “We lived right down on Ontario Street on the edge of Cabbagetown and we loved walking around and seeing the sights,” he said. “It was so much better in the winter, when everything was covered in snow.” Over the past 50 years, the

North Toronto artist Nandor Horthy’s work, Sunset in Cabbagetown, adorns The Mirror’s front page this week. The painter, who immigrated to Canada from his native Hungary in 1957, has painted many winter scenes of Toronto including First Snow (top right), Rocket on Queen West (middle), and Sunset in Cabbagetown (below).

duo has made a living through their art. While Nandor still paints, Eva was forced to stop due to back problems. When they were both active, each supported the other’s career – even if it didn’t always work out. “I was going to show some paintings in Calgary and my wife decided to paint some cowboy scenes to sell while I was out there,” the artist recalled. Unfortunately, the cowboy motif did not catch the eye of art aficionados out west. “She didn’t believe me when I told her my paintings were selling, but none of hers had,” Horthy said. The support they offered one another was crucial given the amount of work that goes into being a visual artist. “You have to do everything to survive in this business,” Horthy said. “I was working all day, every day – way more hours than I would work if

I had been working in an office.” “I wasn’t only painting. I was creating the exhibits, going to shows, framing (the pieces.)” He credits that dedication for helping him earn not just a living, but plenty of plaudits. In addition to numerous awards for his work, he is an elected signature member of the Canadian Society of Artists and past president of the Hungarian Visual Artists of Canada. “I really think, after 50 years in this business, that it’s 10 per cent talent and 90 per cent hard work,” he said. “If you take it seriously, it can work out for you.” While he continues to work and display his art both at exhibitions and in his home gallery on Castlefield Avenue, the 87-year-old has toned down the number of hours he devotes to his craft. These

days, instead of searching far and wide for subject matter to paint, he often bases his work on old sketches and photos, or on his own memories and imagination. “I don’t really go outside (looking for subjects) anymore, but I have a lot of experience to work from,” he said. egardless of your beliefs, Christmas is a time best spent with those you love. In our hurried world, where time is precious, sitting back with those most dear to you is a way to recharge and focus on what’s important. This connection extends beyond your immediate family; it impacts everyone around you: extended family, neighbours, the entire community. More people seem to have smiles on their faces, wishing each other ‘Happy Holidays’ as they make their way through bustling malls, busy streets and crowded grocery stores. With so much cheer in the air, our view let’s try to extend that spirit of goodwill well beyond the holi– why not make every day Mingle with days a day to keep happiness alive. And there are a plethora of your fellow ways to do that, whether it’s Torontonians helping a neighbour shovel the snow, visiting family, calling a friend you haven’t spoken to in a while, or heading out and spending time with your fellow Torontonians. There are so many activities, programs and attractions to enjoy over the holidays. Why not go for a skate at one of the city’s indoor or outdoor rinks? Visit one of the city’s farms or zoos – yes, Riverdale Farm and both the High Park and Toronto zoos are open during the winter months. You can also check out the many historic sites – Colborne Lodge, Montgomery’s Inn, or the Scarborough Museum to name a few. And for the more adventurous among us, why not enjoy one of Toronto’s many trails, including The Shared Path along the Humber River? And while you’re out there, take in a new part of town. The city is filled with amazing places to walk, great local shops to drop in to, and amazing food experiences from all around the world. This holiday season, why not take in everything the City of Toronto has to offer – whether it’s with friends or even if you’re looking for some alone time. Check out our calendar online at www.insidetoronto.com for holiday events happening now to the New Year.

Toronto forced to face some truths in 2014 Trying to parse the meaning of 2014 is only slightly less challenging than summarizing a Thomas Pynchon novel. But if not now, then when? So let me take a stab at it. 2014 was the year Toronto realized it was not, in fact, a city. It was not, at least, the kind of city we have always thought that we were and the place we hoped we might remain: an idealized place where ethnic and economic divisions are not obstacles to consensus and harmony. We always knew this vision of Toronto might be a mirage. But in 2014, we stepped through the illusion and were faced with the undeniable evidence: on Oct. 27, only John Tory was able to exceed the support that remained with the Ford family – mayor Rob Ford and his brother Doug. That Torontonians would

david nickle the city elect Rob Ford mayor in 2010 might have been excused as a blip. Voters either did not know or could not believe how unsuited Rob Ford was for the city’s top job, and were likewise ignorant or incredulous of the fact that the picture Ford painted of the city’s problems and the solutions to those problems had so little to do with reality. But when four years later, with all of that amply and painfully demonstrated, so many – about a third of those who voted – cast their vote with Doug Ford, there was no denying it. Toronto’s old idea of itself as a city no longer applies. Of course, that’s not to say we underwent dramatic change over 2014. Toronto’s “elite” as the Fords describe them have

always been too enamoured of the shiny cultural artifacts of downtown, and always judged the city as to how well those artifacts shone against those of other bigger, more famous cities around the world. And the elites have always smugly boasted about Toronto’s multicultural cred – all those cultures celebrated, all those languages spoken. It’s been tougher for the elites to recognize that many of the people bringing those cultures and speaking those languages have gone to live in parts of the city that have been allowed to deteriorate, and since amalgamation in 1998 been farther from the decision-making centre of Toronto than ever before. The vote for the Fords came from many in those communities – despite the fact that the Fords offered nothing tangible there other than to articulate

affection and camaraderie. That vote sustained over unprecedented scandal, in spite of lies against a backdrop of the illegal drug trade that is one of the most genuinely corrosive elements a city can face. And that is what we’ve learned, more than anything, in 2014: the nature of our long, chronic injury. In 2015, here’s hoping we can learn how to heal it.

Commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Rupert Hotel fire JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com A tragic rooming house fire that claimed the lives of 10 people and left dozens more homeless continues to serve as a rallying cry, even 25 years after it occurred. The Rupert Hotel fire broke out in a rooming house in the Queen and Parliament streets area on Dec. 23, 1989. The rooming house was extremely unsafe; those who had been living there were forced to deal with substandard conditions and the fire exits had been converted to extra rooms, posing a huge safety risk. The deaths it caused sparked action among a steadfast group known as the Rupert Coalition, who have been lobbying ever since for safer rooming houses. The coalition gathered with former City of Toronto mayor and current chief commissioner of the Ontario Human Rights Commission Barbara Hall at the site of the fire on Wednesday, Dec. 17 in

memory of those who died. Rupert Coalition founding member Bart Poesiat noted his group held yearly memorials at the site until the 20th anniversary of the Rupert Hotel fire, and are now holding the event every five years. “It’s an uphill struggle,” he said of the group’s fight to ensure rooming houses are legal, regulated and safe. “At first, there was a lot of goodwill back in ‘89 and we got money from the provincial government and also from the city to start a pilot project to build good quality shared accommodation.” That money was not renewed, however, so when it ran out, the group was forced to shift its focus. “Once the money runs out, there’s a tendency for things to fall apart, but we kept on going and we decided to concentrate on the zoning issue,” he said. “In a lot of neighbourhoods in Toronto, rooming houses are not allowed, period.” The shared accommoda-

tions are permitted in the former City of Toronto, but there has been pushback in the former suburbs, leading to unsafe living conditions for those packed into substandard properties. “When that happens, you get a ticking time bomb because people cannot afford to pay market rents and the owners in some of those houses in Scarborough and the old suburbs start renting

out and people live in basements without regulation,” Poesiat said. Hall has long spoken out in favour of legalizing and regulating rooming houses to ensure people have safe buildings in which to live. She began getting involved in the issue when she was a city councillor and has continued to fight on behalf of rooming house residents to this day.She recalled the frigid

winter day when the Rupert Hotel fire killed 10 people back in 1989, some of whom perished while running back into the building to save their friends. “In a way, it was strangely beautiful - the flames coming out of the building, the water from the fire hoses frozen on the wires - but we knew that inside it was hell,” she said. Hall noted City Hall came together to advocate and provide funding for rooming house residents following the fire. Her work with the Human Rights Commission has been no exception, and she noted there are still “too many limitations and restrictions that make it difficult or impossible sometimes to build safe, affordable housing for people.” Hall added the Human Rights Commission went to the Ontario Municipal Board to fight for affordable housing. “We said, ‘we’re here and we’re staying and we’re not going until we change

things,’” she said. “The human rights code applied to all laws and rules and all services in the province of Ontario.” Rupert Coalition founding member Michael Shapcott, who currently works with the Wellesley Institute, called the Rupert Hotel “a dirty little secret that nobody wanted to talk about.” He added many in the community had little sympathy for the residents prior to the fire, despite the fact those residents lived in a run-down building where the heating often didn’t work and they were often forced to build fires in metal cans just to keep warm. He noted the conditions in the building doomed many of its residents. “The 10 who died, their bodies were entombed in the building for a number of days before they could be pulled out,” he said. “It was a scene of great horror.”

Long-time East York resident Wendy Dobson is affectionately known to many in the community as “The Turkey Lady”. For more than 25 years, Dobson, a long-time east-ender who has lived near Pape and Mortimer avenues since 1999, has coordinated an annual Christmas turkey drive. This year, Dobson and her team have succeeded in raising enough funds to purchase more than 100 10-pound turkeys for less fortunate families and individuals from The Red Door Family Shelter, the Secord Community Centre and The Massey Centre for Women. The 416 Community Support Centre for Women in Cabbagetown will also be receiving three 30-pound turkeys, which will be prepared with all the fixings for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day meals for clients. Years ago, Dobson, a realtor by trade, purchased two turkeys for The 416. The following year, she bought four for the same organization and

back to that tribe.” World Vision Canada will also benefit from the generosity of Toronto singer/songwriter Luke McMaster, who has pledged the proceeds from his new Christmas single “Raise a Glass” to the cause. “I’ve done work with World Vision before when I was on tour and they

do such great work,” the Junction area resident said following a performance at the downtown Pop-Up Market Wednesday, Dec. 17. “I’m hoping to be able to raise $10,000 for them through my song and we’re not there yet, but it’s going well.” While World Vision Canada’s gifts are ideal for the holidays – Pereira noted the Christmas season always provides a healthy boost in sales – the items are available year-round. the rest is history. “I thought if I can bring four why can’t I bring more and that’s where it all started,” Dobson said during a recent interview. “Each year it grew.” She now collects and distributes between 100 and 125 turkeys each year. “It’s just my little way of giving back to the community,” said Dobson, who meets with the organizations each fall to discuss how many turkeys they need. “It’s just something I do every year and it just makes me feel good.” Dobson said her annual endeavour wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of her friends, family members, clients and colleagues. For several years, she purchased turkeys from her long-time supplier, Sunnybrook Meats at Queen Street East and Broadview Avenue. Two years ago, Dobson was forced to find a new supplier after the owner retired. She now purchases the turkeys for her drive for roughly the same price from Brad Noonan at Carnicero’s Prime Meats and Fine Foods at the St. Lawrence Market. Wendy Dobson gets her turkeys for donation from Brad Noonan from Carnicero’s Prime Meats and Fine Foods at the St. Lawrence Market.

Christmas often has people wondering what they can get for that person who has everything. World Vision Canada has a suggestion for those exasperated shoppers: buy something on behalf of their have-everything friends for those who have very little. The not-for-profit organization showcased some of the many options available – chickens, goats, llamas, cows and donkeys – at a recent special Meaningful Gifts Pop-Up Shop at St. James Cathedral. World Vision Canada’s meaningful giving campaign offers Canadians the opportunity to support people by providing them with livestock, agricultural start-up kits, books, medicine and immunizations, clean water and more. “A goat can produce as much as 250 litres of milk a year, and that’s a huge benefit to so many people,” said World Vision Canada giving expert Alicia Pereira. “If someone gives an alpaca, the wool can be used to produce clothing to keep them warm. It’s a great way to give.” Shoppers can also buy their friends and loved ones handmade jewelry, scarves, ornaments, free trade coffee and other gifts from artisans in developing countries, with proceeds going back to those who created the goods. “We recently had one of our former sponsor children, a girl from a Maasai tribe (in Kenya), come over and graduate from Ryerson – the first woman in her tribe to leave,” Pereira said. “She’s gone back and started up a business making bracelets that people can buy, and the money goes

DISPLAYS MONITOR TRAFFIC SPEED wLED

Candlelight Vigil

Got a problem with cars speeding through your neighbourhood? A city traffic monitoring program might be able to help. The Watch Your Speed Program makes use of portable LED display boards that show to all just how fast cars are travelling. The boards can be placed by request at most residential streets as a visual reminder to drivers to obey the speed limit. Locations are chosen via suggestions from the public, the police and the city’s transportation services department. Find out more at www. toronto.ca/transportation COLLISIONS probed wBUS-PEDESTRIAN

Last Friday’s tragic TTC bus

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT accident in Scarborough was the second such incident involving a pedestrian that week. Fourteen-year-old Amaria Diljohn was killed after she was struck by a TTC bus turning from Neilson Road onto Finch Avenue East. The driver later turned himself in, and the TTC says video footage downloaded from the bus will aid police investigations of the incident. Following Diljohn’s death, TTC CEO Andy Byford promised to speed up a review of vehicle operator training that had been initiated following multiple instances of bus drivers running red lights.

On Dec. 15, a 40-year-old woman was struck by a TTC bus near Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue, and was transported to hospital as a precaution. Police are investigating. SERVICE COMING TO GO TRANSIT wINCREASED

GO Transit riders can look forward to more bus and rail service in the new year. Right after the holidays, GO is promising more weekday service on the Milton train line, more bus trips for York University commuters headed to the University of Waterloo, and adjusted scheduling to improve travel times. Also, for a third straight year fares are going up starting February.
