Kensington food shop at Taste of Toronto JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Kensington Market has long been known for its eclectic mix of small businesses, but even in that diverse neighbourhood, there are a few niches that long went unfilled. Thomas Lavers Cannery & Delicatessen, a labour of love between two friends, has started to gain a following for filling two of those niches. The business, which was started by Bryan Lavers and Tye Thomas around Christmas 2012, manages to combine the two partners’ disparate business ideas into one location at 193 Baldwin St. “I grew up on ham and cheese sandwiches and there wasn’t a deli in the neighbourhood,” Lavers said. “Tye wanted to make fresh, handmade pasta and that wasn’t available in the neighbourhood either.” The partners worked together on more than one occasion in the past. Lavers managed Thomas when they both worked at the Rivoli and those roles were reversed when Thomas opened Ronnie’s Local 069 and Lavers came to work for him. While they each brought their own ideas to the table, the business has seen them both expand to tackle elements outside of their own

original concepts. “I wanted to make pasta and he wanted to make sandwiches, but we both do a bit of everything,” Thomas said. “He makes the pasta sauce for my pasta and I make the mustard for his sandwiches.” While the sandwiches, pasta, sauces and spreads started out as the core of the business, Lavers’ ginger beer has become one of its most popular products. They distribute the allnatural, non-alcoholic soda to some 60 restaurants across the city. Thomas Lavers Cannery & Delicatessen will showcase their wares at the Taste of Toronto festival, which takes

place at Fort York from July 2 to July 5. This year marks the second annual Taste festival, but it will be the first time the Kensington business will take part. The festival is a celebration of all things food, offering everything from interactive classes and cooking demonstrations led by celebrity chefs to samplings of various types of cuisine from some of Toronto’s top restaurants to wine and beer tastings. Metroland Media Toronto, publisher of this newspaper, is a sponsor of Taste of Toronto.

Toronto Fringe features 148 plays JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com The Toronto Fringe Festival is back with 148 plays set to hit almost 30 venues throughout the city over the next week and a half. The Fringe, a showcase of independent theatre and arts and the city’s largest theatre festival, takes place from July 1 through 12, with comedies, dramas, musicals, dance performances and more on tap. “It’s a tough thing to highlight 1,100 performances over the course of the festival,” said Toronto Fringe spokesperson Ali Molloy. “Our whole tagline this year is ‘choose your own adventure’ because there are plenty of things to go out and enjoy.” In addition to the usual wide assortment of plays, this year’s Fringe will features a new FringeKids! venue so families can enjoy theatre, music and more. While the Toronto Fringe has hosted kids shows and attractions before, this year, the festival

is bringing the kid-friendliest events to one location, the George Ignatieff Theatre at 15 Devonshire Place. “We have nine FringeKids! shows and they all have performances every day, but right outside the venue there will be different pick-up-and-play stations, a bubble pool and on weekends we’ll have a cool bouncy castle,” Molloy said. “Instead of just going for a show, families can go for a show and then stay all day.” The Toronto Fringe has also made a point of including a number of site-specific venues

with plays catering to those sites. Locales include a boxing gym, a café, a synagogue, a kitchen and more. “It’s like Doors Open Toronto, but with a touch of drama,” Molloy said. “Some of these venues hold 19 (people), some hold 96, and they’re all unique. Where else can you go inside a boxing gym and see a show?” New to the Fringe this year are complimentary Fringe rickshaws running between venues. Molloy said the rides will help theatre-goers make the most of their Fringe expe-

rience by making it easier to get from show to show in a timely manner. “Really, we want people to see more than one show, but it can be hard to get out of one show and then hurry right to another,” she said. Another new feature is a series of Tent Talks, giving industry insiders and the public at large a look at the ins and outs of theatre and the business of putting on a show. The free talks bring industryleading professionals in to talk about everything from creating comedy to staging a musical to the trend toward storefront theatre. “We haven’t really looked as much at the industry side of things, but this is a great way to offer some insights into the industry,” Molloy said. “We don’t take reservations for those, so it’s first-come, firstserved.”

Canada underdogs despite being defending champs: Whitt JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com When the Canadian men’s baseball team takes the field in Ajax for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games, it will do so with the weight of a nation’s hopes on its shoulders. It will also have a target on its back due to its status as defending Pan Am champs. Despite those challenges, team manager Ernie Whitt is looking forward to seeing how his troops fare…once he knows who those troops are. “The team seems like it’s coming together, but every time we get into one of these tournaments it can be a challenge because there are restraints from the different (Major League Baseball) organizations our players are coming from,” he said at a special event at Queen Street West and Peter Street last Thursday. At issue is the fact that players on the 40-man rosters for major league clubs are ineligible for Pan Am play. That rules out not only active

major leaguers themselves but also many top-flight prospects who are close to reaching the bigs. Whitt does not see those restrictions hurting the team too much on the mound. “Looking at it on paper, our pitching should be strong with a bunch of experienced AAA pitchers and guys who have played in the big leagues,” he

said. “Position-wise, we have to see how things shake out but it’s looking like we won’t have a lot of power.” Whitt named former major leaguers Jeff Francis, Andrew Albers, Phillippe Aumont, Chris Leroux and Shawn Hill as likely arms for Canada, though he said former Blue Jay Adam Loewen will not be part of the squad. Loewen returned to pitching last year after spending a few years trying to catch on in the majors as a converted outfielder. “Adam thinks he’s got a chance to get the call (to the major leagues) and we never want to get in the way of that,” Whitt said. Whitt, who caught for the Toronto Blue Jays from the team’s inaugural season in 1977 until 1989, expects Canada to face a stiff challenge every time they step on the field during the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games, listing the United States, Cuba and the Dominican Republic as the toughest opponents. “They have such a tremendous pool of players to draw from,” he said. “If you look at

it on paper, we’re probably an underdog even though we’re the defending champs.” In a single-elimination tournament, however, favourites can be upended by a hot hand, something Whitt feels Team Canada can use to its advantage. “In a single game, anyone can win,” he said. Whitt added that Team Canada will benefit from having good team chemistry, combined with a sense of national pride that will be bolstered by playing before hometown crowds. “We’ve always been able to come together as a team in these tournaments,” he said. “I’m big on chemistry and this is a team that plays together, that plays for each other and for pride.” The Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games baseball tournament will be played at the new President’s Choice Ajax Pan Am Ballpark from Saturday, July 11 through to Sunday, July 26.

New Regent Park clinic brings much needed support JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com For many new Canadians the challenge of finding a family doctor who is accepting new patients can serve as the first of many barriers to accessing the health care they need. A new clinic in Regent Park will help ease that load with a team of physicians, plus nurses and a special mental health component to help those with complex mental health and addiction issues in the Regent Park, Moss Park and St. James Town neighbourhoods. Dubbed the Sumac Creek Health Centre, the new facility will be on the third floor at 73 Regent Park Blvd. It will be run by St. Michael’s Hospital as one of six outreach clinics offering family medicine in the downtown core. Dr. Karen Weyman, interim chief of St. Michael’s Hospital’s Department of Family and Co m m u n i t y Me d i c i n e, noted the clinic will provide inter-professional care with physicians partnered with social workers, a chiropodist, psychiatrist, pharmacist and more. “It’s a very high-needs area, and the patients will be assigned family doctors who will work with a team to make sure those patients get the care they need,” she said, adding Sumac Creek will work alongside other community health organizations to fill the health care gap in the area, which has been underserved for years. “We’ve been given information from Healthlink and from the Ministry (of Health) that there are 10,000 unattached patients in our catchment area who don’t have a primary care provider,” she said. “... we want to give people the care they need to keep them out of the hospital.” The diverse population also means care providers at Sumac Creek Health Centre must take a number of special needs into account, from the possibility of language barriers to cultural beliefs. A community engagement specialist has been hired to ensure the health centre is aware of and meets those needs. “We’re looking at what needs to be done,” Weyman

said. “We may need to have signage in different languages. We’ve heard there’s a group of Muslim women who are in need of care and we have to make sure they have female providers.” In addition to seeing physicians, patients will have access to after-hours care at that location and at other St. Michael’s Academic Family Health Team locations. “It’s about giving them the care they need in their community, not making them go out of their community to a place where they might not be comfortable,” Weyman said. St. Michael’s Hospital chief psychiatrist Dr. Vicky Stergiopoulos said the mental health component of the Sumac Creek Health Centre, dubbed Flexible Outreach Community Urban Support (FOCUS), will bring a muchneeded support system to the community. “The people who use the services don’t need to get primary care at (Sumac Creek) – it’s a program to help those with the most complex (mental health and addiction recovery) needs,” she said. Stergiopoulos said FOCUS would serve “wraparound care,” helping clients in a holistic way by addressing often-interwoven issues, with care available on a 24/7 basis. These include mental illness, addiction, homelessness, legal needs, employment, education and family issues. “The area that includes Regent Park, Moss Park and St. James Town has a high prevalence of severe and multiple disorders,” Stergiopoulos said. “There’s the highest concentration of homeless shelters in the city and a lot of people with very complex needs.” “The program’s role is to graduate people to less intensive support,” said Stergiopoulos, noting the clinic will be able to work with 190 clients at a time. As critical as the need for mental health care is, the addition of new doctors into the community is every bit as welcome. The Sumac Creek Health Centre will open Monday, July 13. Metrolinx report puts pressure on Mayor John Tory and Toronto council There are a couple of ways to look at the new report from Metrolinx that draws attention to the need for a downtown relief subway line, for which no funding exists. One way is to see it as a stick with which to hit the Toronto council-supported Scarborough subway extension and Mayor John Tory’s proposed SmartTrack system: one a project that is unnecessary, the second a project that will only provide short-term relief; and both, unlike the relief line, close to fully funded. The Metrolinx report, Yonge Relief Network Study, was released in June, but Tory and council have had access to countless other opinions and studies indicating the Yonge subway line is running over capacity and a relief line looping down from the BloorDanforth line and possibly

david nickle the city points north is the cure. The study lays it out in starker terms. Toronto and Metrolinx have made some headway in mitigating the crowding on the Yonge line. The automatic train control and new, roomier trains help, as does the GO Regional Express plan that will form the backbone of Tory’s SmartTrack proposal. That will meet needs over the next 15 years. Past that, we’re all back in the same swamping boat. Given all that, one might call Toronto’s political leadership for being short-sighted and pandering – funding inadequate short term transit plans at the expense of a long-term

solution. That is a legitimate call. But the only call that follows from that is a “throw the bums out” movement, and there are three years before anyone can even think about that. In the meantime, the call from Metrolinx points to another difficult choice. If the city really wants to pay for a short subway line in Scarborough and a multi-station build along the Regional Express line that runs very close to that subway, it must either resign itself to the hub of its entire transit system failing or else come up with a lot more money. It’s not inconceivable that council could do so. In the last term, council voted to raise property taxes to pay for a subway that would serve only a small portion of the city. There is a greater pretext

for doing so in the matter of the Downtown Relief Line – in that all of the city loses out when the hub of the system crowds to the point of dysfunction. But on the subject of dysfunction, the politics won’t make it easy. The suburban-downtown rift that’s defined this city since amalgamation in the late 1990s is showing no sign of healing, and as council is constituted, suburban votes hold sway. But sooner rather than later, someone is going to have to make that choice. And once that’s done, we’re all going to have to start paying, and it will be considerably more than we would have with more rational and evidencebased leadership.

Christie Pits Film Festival is back JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Over the short span of five years, the Christie Pits Film Festival has gone from a start-up not-for-profit to a summer staple that draws capacity crowds to the park. The festival was started by local resident Emily Reid in 2011, who sought to bring Sunday evening showings of popular Hollywood movies to Christie Pits Park. For its fifth anniversary, she said, the festival will have a few added features. First and foremost is the overarching motif for this year’s festival, Great Villains, which highlights nasty characters audiences love – or love to hate. “We’ve always tried to have a theme and for the fifth year we thought we’d have a bit of a departure and focus on interesting characters who are either villains or anti-heroes,” she said. The festival will kick off with the classic silent film Nosferatu, with Toronto band

Del Bel on hand to perform a live score. “We thought that would be something really special, a great way to open our fifth anniversary season,” Reid said. Those looking to attend screenings should bring blankets and grab a spot early. After years of solid turnouts, the festival’s popularity boomed last year. The number of moviegoers doubled in 2014, to the point where films routinely drew 1,000 spectators. The festival will once again feature local food vendors serving food and desserts, and this year the movie-going experience will be fleshed out even more with popcorn on hand for the first time ever.

WHO WANTS TO SLEEP LIKE A

“It seems like a small thing, but people have been asking for fresh popcorn since year one,” Reid said. After the opening night screening of Nosferatu on Sunday, July 5, the festival will run through a selection of classics and critical and audience favourites including O Brother, Where Art Thou?, The Birds and Mean Girls. The films will start at sundown each Sunday – typically around 9:20 p.m. – with food and snacks on sale starting at 6 p.m. The festival will run weekly until Aug. 16, when it will close with a screening of There Will Be Blood. “I found out it was (rated) PG, which surprised me, and I thought ‘we have to show that,’” Reid said. The closing night screening will also offer bike valet service. The films are pay-whatyou-can, with a suggested donation of $10.

Public school board trustee expenses to be capped at $5,000 The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) voted at its June meeting to approve a motion to cap each trustee’s expenses at $5,000 annually despite a few trustees arguing it might not be enough to serve the community well. The recommendation came in response to a directive issued by Ontario Minister of Education Liz Sandals to

reduce discretionary budget allocations and implement a shared services model for trustee services. That resulted in some trustees, who used to have $27,000 for discretionary expenses, losing their constituency assistants. York South-Weston Chris Tonks admitted his constituency has suffered by losing

his constituency assistant. “I’m very cautious and responsible in what I spend,” said Tonks, adding the extra funds would allow for greater outreach in the community. But the majority of trustees agreed instead to try the staff’s recommendation of $5,000, which was based on the average amount of expenses spent by the board each year.

Participants will be given a FREE in-office demonstration, and the opportunity to evaluate the latest, most advanced hearing aid technology for 30 days at drastically reduced rates. A refund* is available at the end of the test period if you feel your test aids do not improve your hearing. discreet scr t and a award A full range of sizes are available in this new technology, including the exceptionally di winning “designRITE” and IIC models shown here:

Similar to choosing between contact lenses or glasses, you can decide with your hearing professional which hearing aid style would best suit you. Both styles have approximately the same performance and functions, but are fitted to the ear differently.

It’s almost a shame this technology isn’t more visible! The new designRITE and Invisible-In-the-Canal (IIC) hearing aids are smaller and more beautiful than ever, striking the perfect balance between size and performance. The elegant and highly discreet designRITE hearing aid fits perfectly on top of your ear, and the thin tube in your ear canal is designed to disappear against your skin. The new IIC hearing aid--now with wireless technology--provides all of the outstanding features and benefits you want in a digital hearing aid, minus the stigma that came with wearing one in the past.

At SickKids, we believe that every child deserves every chance to live. That’s why we're passionate about the Herbie Fund, which brings children from around the world to SickKids - one of the world’s largest and most respected paediatric health-science centres - for life-saving or life-changing surgeries they can’t get in their own countries or regions. Since the inception of the fund in 1979, over 765 children from 105 countries have received specialized surgical treatment. The Herbie Fund is supported entirely by community donations. Together, on Herbie Day, June 19, we raised $170,000. So thank you for your generosity! Your gift supports the world’s most vulnerable children, and helps ensure that no child’s health is compromised because of where they live. Cheering for the team behind the team Chevrolet gives thanks to the volunteers at the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games By: Stephen K. Carlisle, President and Managing Director, General Motors Canada

This year, more than 250,000 people will arrive in our city to join us for The TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, events which will inspire and engage generations of Canadians.

The athletes will be the stars of the Games. Their stories, their hard work and their victories are what move us to celebrate their achievements, to take pride in our hometown competitors and to recognize those from around the world.

The TORONTO 2015 Pan Am Games Torch Relay Is Underway. Visit insidetoronto.com/panam to follow the Pan Am flame here in Toronto.

It’s also with pride that we welcome our neighbours to Toronto and its surrounding areas, because it’s our city, it’s our province and it’s our country. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our community, and we’re ready.

Supporting Our Volunteers At Chevrolet, we recognize that the 23,000 volunteers at this year’s Games are the engine that makes it all possible. We’re ready because of those volunteers. We believe in the power of possibilities and there’s an incredible potential in each of them. The hard work of our volunteers should be recognized. They are like the pit crew in a grueling race and they deserve our thanks for the early mornings, late nights and their unfaltering dedication. Four years ago, Chevrolet committed to being the official sponsor of the volunteers for the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games. A commitment made out of respect for the volunteers own unfaltering commitment.

It was also a natural extension of Chevrolet’s long history of supporting Canadian sports. As the organizers have worked to shape the Games, we’ve worked alongside them to provide the support needed for our volunteers to make these Games the greatest they’ve ever been. This has meant providing Chevrolet vehicles to help the volunteers behind the scenes to prepare the field of play, to shuttle athletes to and from their matches, to enhance the spectator experience, and to participate in the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. No matter how you enjoy the Games you’re likely to see these hardworking volunteers— but you should also think of the ones you don’t see, those integral to bringing the Games to life before a single race was run, before a single ball was thrown, and before any athletes proudly walked the Opening Ceremony to the applause of people from around the world. Take a moment to join us in thanking them.

North York Community council opposes Chatsworth Dr. development North York Community Council has asked city staff to head to the Ontario Municipal Board to oppose a condo development on Chatsworth Drive, just west of Yonge Street. The community council decision must still be approved by city council July 7. The proposed development would consist of a pair of apartment towers of six and seven stories consisting of 114

apartments. There would be 120 parking spaces in a threelevel parking garage. A city staff report said the proposed development would be in an area that’s not intended for growth, it is not consistent with the existing and planned context of the neighbourhood and it does not conform to the city’s official plan. The report called the proposal an “over-intensification of development on the

site.” The city report said the developer has appealed to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) due to city council’s lack of decision on the application within the time frame specified by the planning act. A first pre-hearing had already occurred at the OMB and a second is scheduled for Aug. 5. The OMB hearing is scheduled to start Feb. 8. – Dominik Kurek

Site could impact on St. Clair streetcars >>>from page 1 Matlow pointed out a tall tower approved for the northeast corner of the intersection before he was elected came with a number of other concessions, including a sizable setback from the street, a large park and mid-block connections to ensure the building itself was not simply an imposing wall. The councillor pointed out only a small portion of the area on which the proposed new tower would stand is zoned for highrise construction. “Part of the site is, but it would

be disingenuous to say the site itself can be interpreted to be (designated for highrise construction),” he said. “The preponderance of the site is designated for mid-rise construction.” The proposal also fails to meet the standards Matlow would like to see when it comes to setbacks. Given how busy Yonge and St. Clair is as a whole, the councillor said it is important to ensure the public realm is addressed in any development application. “This doesn’t really provide anything in the way of setbacks,” he said. “It also makes use of a narrow laneway at the back that’s already well used. The laneway’s adjacent to St.

Clair station where the St. Clair streetcars enter and exit, so it could have an enormously adverse impact on the streetcar’s operation.” Matlow’s opposition to the proposal was echoed by residents in the area at a public meeting last week. Those in attendance voiced extreme displeasure with the application. “What I and the residents let the developer know is that unless we see something very different (in the form of a highly amended application), we’ll fight this all the way, as far as we have to,” the councillor said.

i

A final report on the application is due before council this fall.
