Standing together the only way to combat hatred, says Councillor Wong-Tam JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com This weekend’s deadly mass shooting in Orlando may have some feeling hyper-vigilant, but Councillor Kristyn WongTam said fear is precisely the wrong response. The assault, which saw 29-year-old Omar Mateen murder 49 people and wound dozens more at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Florida, should
not keep members of the LGBTQ community and their allies from standing together at Pride, the councillor said. If anything, she said it should prompt greater participation. “The only way we’re going to combat homophobia and hatred and violence is through strength in numbers,” she said. “It’s important for us to come out to the Pride Parade in the greatest numbers pos-
sible to show our support.” Wong-Tam, who is openly gay, said she was shocked and devastated upon hearing of the mass shooting. She noted many in the LGBTQ community have faced violence at home, school or work because of their sexuality. “Certainly, a mass shooting is a very public display of the kinds of violent and murderous acts many in the
community are fearful of,” she said. While some may have safety concerns, the shooting could in fact mobilize many who have taken the rights and freedoms they have for granted, Wong-Tam noted. “It could motivate people who have been complacent about Pride or who think ‘we don’t need Pride anymore (because of strides made in ensuring equal rights for the
LGBTQ community.),’” she said. The Ward 27 councillor (Toronto Centre-Rosedale) acknowledged that it would be “ignorant” not to take a hard look at security downtown throughout Pride Toronto. Indeed, Pride Toronto is working with Toronto police and the RCMP to revisit security plans in a bid to find a way to ensure everyone is safe throughout the month.

Standing up to hate with pride and love
T
he city is on edge. Sunday’s mass murder at gay nightclub Pulse in Orlando, Florida, has put Toronto on high alert. That’s evident by Monday’s quick response by Toronto police to reports of a masked man walking around the University of Toronto’s St. George campus that the safety of the city and its citizens is of paramount importance. Dozens of Emergency Task Force officers descended on the campus, cordoning off roads searching each building, weapons drawn, in hopes of preventing a tragedy. Was there proof something as heinous as what happened in Orlando could our view happen here, in broad daylight? No. But the potential threat and that was enough. Toronto stands existed The attack that killed 49 in solidarity people out enjoying a night of dancing and drinks at the gay with all club reminds us – once again – that hate hangs over us and lives can be tragically altered, and ended, in an instant. While Toronto police came up empty in their search for the ‘suspicious person’, reporting such suspicious activity to the authorities is something each and every one of us can do to ensure the safety of ourselves and our fellow Torontonians. We don’t want to live in fear, but we need to be vigilant to continue to live in peace. As Toronto continues celebrating its first-ever Pride Month, Pride Toronto executive director Mathieu Chantelois noted the need for safety and solidarity in the wake of Sunday’s shootings. “Pride has always been about creating a safe place where everyone can come together and be themselves,” he said. “Now, we are so painfully aware of the importance of standing up to hate with love and celebrating the beauty, diversity and strength of our community.” The upcoming Pride parade on July 3 will be dedicated to the memory of the Pulse victims. The parade, which kicks off at Church and Bloor streets at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 3, will begin with a moment of silence, followed by a reading of the names of the 49 people killed and 53 wounded in the deadly attack. Pride is working with Toronto police and the RCMP on an upgraded security plan to ensure the public remains safe throughout Pride Month. The city is on edge, but it’s full of pride; for its citizens, its acceptance and its sense of freedom.

Need to go further in eradicating homophobia It was to be a nice little holiday in California: joining my wife at the end of a west-coast business junket to stay with dear old friends in Burbank, meet some of her Los Angeles-area family that hadn’t made it up for the wedding, enjoy some sun-drenched Southern California chill after not having seen each other for a couple of weeks. A good holiday: the kind that celebrates loving relationships – reaffirming old ties, cementing new ones, along the mad freeway system that seems to be the spine of Los Angeles County. On Sunday, early, we watched a bigger spine crack. In Orlando, Florida, more than 100 people were gunned down in a gay nightclub on Saturday night by Omar Mateen in what first seemed an act of terrible hate but now it seems was an act of deliberate terror. And just down the
david nickle the city highway from us, in Santa Monica, police arrested an Indiana man with a truck full of guns and the stated intention of using them at Los Angeles’ Gay Pride parade. At this point, no word whether the planned attack was one of terror or hate. Details. The suspect, who’d driven in from Indiana, meant to do harm to gay and lesbian and transsexual people. Armed like that, he likely meant to kill them. That was very close – I’ll be honest, close enough that it rattled us. But we didn’t have to be here in Burbank to feel that way. It’s close all around. When we get back to Toronto later this week, that same threat – the low, cretinous bigotry that casts itself against the light of
unsanctified love (forgive me, today, that florid metaphor) – will be pervasive. We’re in a city where a sizeable portion of the city has objected strongly enough to a curriculum promoting understanding of gay and lesbian sex that they would consider withdrawing their children from classes. Just a few years ago, we elected a mayor whose homophobia prevented him from attending Pride events and inspired him to fight when the Rainbow Flag flew over City Hall during the Sochi Olympics. We’re getting better in some ways. At the top levels, we’re no longer burdened with hateful leadership: the new Mayor John Tory, the new Prime Minister Justin Trudeau don’t pander to that vile id. Kathleen Wynne has spent a career, in part, defending against it. We’re a good place. But really, so is the United States. Same-sex
marriage is lawful. There is nothing wrong and very much right with a boy meeting a boy at the Pulse nightclub and exchanging a deep and hopeful kiss. It ought not bring a death sentence. U.S. President Barack Obama laid it out very clearly. The shootings at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando were an act of hate. They were an act of terror. Homophobia, that bromide that has kept many scowling bigots in dinner-table conversation for decades, has inspired the worst mass-shooting in American history. It is something that can no longer be tolerated, even in those quiet and awful conversations. If we are to take Daesh seriously, we must also take homophobes seriously. Omar Mateen has shown us.

Honest Ed’s development proposal ‘still too big and too dense’ JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com A revamped development plan for the site housing the soon-to-be-demolished Honest Ed’s is a vast improvement over the original, but there’s still a ways to go before it meets the demands of the public and local councillors. Those were the key takeaways from a public meeting on the proposal at the Bickford Centre Monday. The updated plan ticked a number of boxes on the wish lists brought forward by the City of Toronto, councillors Joe Cressy and Mike Layton, and residents and businesses, including reduced height, widened sidewalks, heritage preservation, the provision of park space and an open-air Honest Ed’s alley. There appeared to be general agreement among the 200 people in attendance at the crowded meeting, however, that developer Westbank need
to continue to work with the public to find the right mix. “There have been a number of significant changes based on the feedback (the public has) given and we’ve given,” said Cressy. “Important additions like the introduction of park space. Is it big enough? That’s up for discussion, but that’s there.” That park space – proposed to be roughly 900 square metres – would certainly provide a boon to the area, as would the opened-up Honest Ed’s laneway and the fact it would provide more rental units at a time when most new tower developments in Toronto are condos. Cressy noted those are some of the perks to the application. “Is (the proposal) still too big and too dense? Yes, it is,” he said. “But is it still rental? It is. Are there still incubator spaces around small business? There are. Is there still a focus to have a mixed use neighbourhood that has a lot of family-sized units? Yes.”
“It’s an area the city intends to grow, but that growth has to be suited to the (neighbourhood) context,” said City of Toronto planner Graig Uens, adding the presence of lowdensity residential neighbourhoods around Mirvish Village adds to the importance of striking the proper balance on the site in question.
Justin Skinner/Metroland
A model of the proposed development at the former Honest Ed’s site was on display Monday at the Bickford Centre.
The new development calls for a series of towers ranging from six to 29 storeys on the block bounded by Bathurst Street, Bloor Street, Markham Street and Lennox Street. Given that the parcel of land either includes or sits adjacent to four residents’ associations, three BIAs and
two city wards, Cressy noted a need to get things right. The city is devising an Official Plan for the “Four Corners,” the area around Bloor and Bathurst, to help steer development in the neighbourhood as more development applications start coming in.
“
It’s an area the city intends to grow, but that growth has to be suited to the context. – Graig Uens, city planner
In total, the proposed development would feature 928 residential units, a noticeable drop from Westlake’s original proposal that called for taller, denser towers. Shawn Lapointe of Henriquez Partners Architects, speaking on behalf of Westlake, pointed to reduced massing throughout the development, height
reductions, improved heritage protections, and the on-site parkland as improvements both the public and city asked for. Sidewalks will also be widened from two to six metres in places to improve the pedestrian experience, while micro retail and retail incubation will offer opportunities to small businesses. George Dark of Urban Strategies, also speaking on behalf of Westlake, said the developers have had “almost every kind of consultation in my experience that we can have” with the public and the city. Despite that, the developers and the city remain hopeful further discussions will lead to a solution that works for everyone. “We’re not done yet,” Dark said. “It’s an ongoing process.” For more info on the proposal and the development process, visit www.toronto. ca/planning/mirvishvillage

Huge three-pointer from Nash, visiting three Toronto charities JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com For years, basketball star Steve Nash led his teams to glory in the NBA. Now, he’s leading in a new way, helping everyday people with education, healthcare and other much-needed supports. The two-time NBA MVP and the greatest Canadian hoopster of all time joined Tangerine Bank president and CEO Peter Aceto and Tangerine employees at ACCES Employment near College and Bathurst streets as part of a day-long tour lending a helping hand at three Toronto charities. The selection in
tour was part of Tangerine’s #BrightWayForward campaign, which helps empower Canadians in a variety of ways. “For me, it’s just awesome to be part of an organization that’s making positive changes and doing great things in the community,” said Nash, who serves as a BrightWayForward ambassador in addition to his own charity work through the Steve Nash Foundation. “We’re visiting three organizations, surprising them with Tangerine staff volunteering to help out and making a donation.”
10” hanGinG BasKet
The 18-year NBA veteran has remained active in the sports world since his retirement, taking on a role as a player development consultant with the Golden State Warriors and working with Team Canada. His charitable efforts have also helped him make the transition into retirement from his playing career. “It’s always difficult to replace something that big and that plays that specific a role in your life,” he said, noting that events such as Friday’s charity tour offer their own rewards. Pride Parade kicks off July 3 afternoon at Church and Bloor >>>from page 1 beautiful family members in our hearts, as we continue to fight violence and discrimination against our community.” The parade, which will kick off at Church and Bloor streets at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 3, will begin with a moment of silence, followed by a reading of the names of the 49 people killed and 53 wounded in Mateen’s deadly attack. In the meantime, Pride is working with Toronto Police and the RCMP on an upgraded security plan to ensure the public remains safe throughout Pride Month. Pride has been wary of adding a uniformed presence to the festivities given that many in the LGBTQ community have had strained relationships with the police and have felt marginalized by law enforcement. Despite any such concerns,
Pride Toronto executive director Mathieu Chantelois noted the need for safety and solidarity in the face of hatred following Sunday’s shootings.
“
Pride has always been about creating a safe place...
– Mathieu Chantelois, Pride Toronto executive director
“Pride has always been about creating a safe place where everyone can come together and be themselves,” he said. “Now, we are so painfully aware of the importance of standing up to hate with love and celebrating the beauty, diversity and strength of our community.”

Openly gay Toronto MP Rob Oliphant speaks at vigil for Orlando victims fannie sunshine fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Rob Oliphant always expected an attack on the gay community, like the massacre in Orlando, Florida, early Sunday, June 12, which saw 49 people gunned down in the worst mass shooting in U.S. history, was a real possibility. The openly gay Don Valley West MP was woken Sunday by his partner, Marco Fiola, who told him of the early morning shooting at gay nightclub Pulse. “He said, ‘there’s been a shooting in Orlando and 20 people are dead’,” Oliphant recalled of early reports. “He paused and then said, ‘it was at a gay bar.’” Omar Mateen, a U.S. citizen of Afghani descent, opened fire on attendees at the nightclub after exchanging gunfire with police.
Rob Oliphant
Police fatally shot Mateen, after the 29-year-old shot 49 people dead and wounded 53. Oliphant’s first reaction was thinking he always expected something like this to happen, he said. “There is a vulnerability of being a target for a crazy person,” he said. “I’ve always had this in the back of my mind as a possibility.”
His thoughts then went to the families of those killed, and once he found out the gunman was Muslim, he instantly had concern for the large Muslim population in his riding, tweeting Sunday ‘Needs to be shared: I am an openly gay MP elected by the largest Muslim community in Canada’, which has been retweeted more than 3,000 times. “People assume all Muslims are homophobic,” Oliphant said. “As a gay Liberal United Church minister, I had their support right from the beginning. The Muslim community rallied around me. There was difficulty with some people in the community, but I had difficulty with Christians and people of other faiths.” Though he hasn’t experienced physical violence, Oliphant said he “often” feels fearful for his safety. “I’ll walk down the street
and I know people are talking about me,” he said, adding he’s been verbally bullied over the years. “I don’t like being alone. I feel like there’s something in my blind spot.” Oliphant, who spoke before hundreds at the vigil for the Orlando victims in Toronto Sunday night at Barbara Hall Park on Church Street, said although it was a sombre gathering, there was also great solidarity among attendees. “It was a moment where the community could gather in an open place and be ourselves and not be afraid,” he said. And while he’s not naive about security issues in Canada, particularly when it comes to the LGBTQ2S community and the upcoming Pride Parade Sunday, July 3, he believes “we cannot let terrorists have the final word.” “That would be giving them a victory they don’t deserve,” Oliphant said.

Caplansky’s deli on College Street reopens Caplansky’s on College Street is back in business, ending a scare that saw the downtown deli shut down following a fight between the owner and the landlord. Late Monday, June 6, the restaurant owner, Zane Caplansky, received a call that the alarms at the deli had been triggered. When he went to the site, at 356 College St., he found a locksmith and a bailiff who informed him his lease had been terminated. A notice said the lease was ended
“for failing to effect repairs not authorized by the landlord.” Caplansky took the matter to court Friday, June 10, filing an injunction to have the deli reopened.
While the restaurant was shut down, Caplansky parked his food truck outside the store so he could continue to serve customers in the area. Caplansky’s locations in Yorkville and at Pearson International insidetoronto.com Airport remained open Food truck service for business as usual. The judge ruled that the lease Caplansky’s on College will offiwas valid and that Caplansky could cially reopen at 9 a.m. on Saturday, reopen the eatery. June 11. Be a part of the discussion. Marnie’s Room a sanctuary at SickKids JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) is well-known for its top-notch pediatric care, but another key part of its role is ensuring patients and their families have a place to take their minds off their medical conditions. To that end, the hospital recently opened Marnie’s Studio, a cheerful arts-based room where young SickKids patients can paint, draw, make use of a multi-media hub, dance on a stage or relax in a multi-sensory room with soothing sounds and lights. The studio space had previously been used as a theatre space for a play that is no longer staged at SickKids, with a recent $2-million renovation making it far more welcoming and functional. “Marnie’s Studio provides patients with an opportunity to get away from their bedside clinical environments
and just relax and enjoy themselves,” said SickKids child life specialist Saghi Tootoonchinia. “There’s an art bar, a stage, a multi-media room and workshops for kids to provide them with a distraction during their stay.”
“
It helps to relax and distract me, and it’s great when I have a bunch of appointments on the same day and have some extra time between them. – Stephanie Clayton, 14
The room was designed after a great deal of consultation with patients and families as SickKids looked to find the best use for the space. The multi-sensory room adjacent to the art studio is a particular highlight, with
dim lighting, tactile and sonic activities, comfortable seating and calming sounds. “It creates a full sensory experience and creates stimulation that can help to increase concentration, but at the same time it helps to reduce stress and anxiety,” Tootoonchinia said. SickKids patient Stephanie Clayton, 14, who was born with an omphalocele – an organ growing outside of her body – no longer stays at the hospital, but said the room is her favourite part of visiting SickKids for check-ups. “It helps to relax and distract me, and it’s great when I have a bunch of appointments on the same day and have some extra time between them,” she said. The multi-media room, meanwhile, gives patients a chance to record videos or songs, and allows for story time and specialized shows to be broadcast over SickKids’ CCTV network.
Stephanie Clayton, 14, experiences the multi-sensory room last Friday at the Hospital for Sick Children.
“It’s a way for kids to learn a new skill, along with the things they can learn through art workshops here,” Tootoonchinia said. The creation and renovation of Marnie’s Studio was funded by a variety of community supporters, including the Reznick and Kimelman families, Simple Plan Foundation, Dancers for Cancer and others.

All-star gala for SickKids Friday JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com The NHL season may be over, but hockey fans can still get up close and personal with some of the sport’s stars while raising funds for a good cause. The second annual All-Star Gala for SickKids will bring a number of NHL players – among other athletes and celebrities – together for a night of fun, food, games, auctions and an open bar. C o n c e i v e d by e v e n t marketing and production company West of Contra, the
event will feature the Toronto Maple Leafs’ Peter Holland, all-star Montreal Canadiens defenceman PK Subban and others. With Subban’s involvement, some of the proceeds from the event will also go to the Montreal Children’s Hospital. “We’ll have a lot of sportsthemed events and a lot of pro athletes there to make the night a success,” said James Blackburn of West of Contra. The duo decided a few years back to leverage their contacts in the NHL to help
raise funds for a gala event. Last year’s inaugural effort was a success, bringing in $75,000, and Blackburn and Healy said they hope to double that amount this year. Blackburn expects between 30 and 40 past and present athletes from the NHL, CFL, NBA, MLB and MLS to join for the All-Star Gala, which takes place at Arcadian Court, 401 Bay St., starting at 8:30 p.m. Friday, June 17. Police partner with IRS, U.S. Homeland Security to make arrests in lottery scam Toronto police say they’ve made two more arrests in a $400,000 fraudulent lottery scheme targeting seniors. Police worked with U.S. Homeland Security and the Internal Revenue Service on the investigation. Police allege people in the U.S. received unsolicited mail containing purported lottery letters and cheques.

“Those people called the supposed claims agent listed in the lottery letter and received directions to cash the cheques and remit the proceeds in order to collect the prize,” police alleged in a news release Friday. “They never received the promised prizes and later learned the cheques were fraudulent.” The proceeds of this crime
were laundered by suspects in the U.S. and Canada. Suspects in Canada allegedly directed the operations of the scheme in Canada and the U.S., police said. As a result of the initial investigation, five people were arrested Dec. 17 and are before the courts. Two more people were arrested Tuesday, June 7.

Downtown Yonge BIA brings the sound of music to Toronto Play the Parks summer concert series is free T h e D ow n t ow n Yo n g e Business Improvement Area (DYBIA) free Play the Parks summer concert series is back. For its fourth season, the DYBIA is partnering with Massey Hall to offer a line up of musicians that reflect Toronto’s diverse music scene. It will have a wide range of genres for all to enjoy, including performances by Os Tropies, Asiko Afrobeat Ensemble, The Soul Motivators, Pocket Concerts, Cairo, and more. “We are proud to continue providing opportunities for emerging artists to present their craft and for music lovers to enjoy a wide sample of what Toronto’s growing music scene has to offer,” DYBIA executive director Mark Garner said in a press release. This year’s free music
series kicks off Wednesday, June 22 at 5 p.m. in Trinity Square Park with the Massey Hall Band, a 15-piece alternative big band devoted to reinventing, reinterpreting and re-energizing the great music connected to their namesake. Play the Parks can be found at four venues throughout the Downtown Yonge area: Trinity Square Park, on the west side of CF Toronto Eaton Centre, the courtyard behind College Park at College and Yonge, Mackenzie House museum, at Dundas and Bond, and McGill Granby Parkette, at Yonge and Gerrard. “Massey Hall is thrilled to partner with the Downtown Yonge BIA to explore the personalities of Toronto’s downtown parks this summer, and bring the unique characteristics of these spaces to life with music,” Rodrigo Fritz, pro-
gramming manager at Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall said in a press release. “Trinity Square will be a gathering place for danceable rhythms from across the Americas; McGill Granby Parkette will celebrate the spirit of summer and the global communities who ignite Toronto’s streets; College Park will be animated at lunchtime with funk, jazz and soul; and Mackenzie House will showcase classical-rooted music that reflects the way the genre and our Music City has evolved since the days of our first mayor, William Lyon Mackenzie.” After the June 22 launch, 28 more performances will take place in June, July, August and September, with show times happening during the lunch hour, after work and on weekends.

CityPlace is changing the look of the downtown core, but it’s more than residential towers that are catching the public’s eye. Developer Concord Adex has created the largest public art collection in Canada and have tied the community together through lightingbased works. The collection consists of three pieces –Pierre Poussin’s “Variegation,” Katharine Harvey’s “Gardiner Streams” and Adrian Gollner’s “Drift” – which have been integrated into the development itself. Harold Madi, director of Urban Design at the City of Toronto, noted the public art pieces were part of CityPlace’s design from the time the community was being planned. “(The art) reinforces the community and tells the stories of this place and the people in this place,” he said. “It’s successful because Concord Adex has been a proponent (of public art) since

Day 1.” Madi added CityPlace was the first community in Toronto to have its own public art master plan, ensuring that art is both present throughout and suited to the development. Variegation features pillar, public seating and other pieces that light up with shapes of plants and flowers that once bloomed throughout the downtown region. Gardiner Streams, a giant screen with multi-coloured
ribbons of light, reflects the Gardiner Expressway. Taken from low shutter speed photos of the expressway, it faces the busy road and is fully visible to motorists there. Drift sees glazed portions of towers in the development fluctuate in colour throughout the night, adding to the sense of cohesion within the neighbourhood. The three projects were unveiled at a launch at 75 Queen’s Wharf Rd. on Thursday, June 9.

Police blame people for congestion It appears pedestrians, not cars, snarl traffic the most. Just ask the police. Additional uniformed officers appeared at eight troublesome city intersections this week, part of an initiative announced by Mayor John Tory earlier this month. And while Tory insists road users equally play a role enabling traffic congestion and unsafe conditions, many Toronto police officers don’t agree. They point to those violators on foot for example with the temerity to cross even while the countdown timer is running, which interferes with cars’ ability to turn. Pedestrian advocates counter that high speeds and roads designed purely for the benefit of one mode of transportation over all others are the main culprits for congestion. Two public meetings are scheduled to discuss the idea, first on Wednesday, June 22 at Stan Wadlow Community Centre, 373 Cedarvale Ave., starting at 5 p.m., and the next day at St. John the Baptist Church Norway, 470 Woodbine, also at 5 p.m.

Inside scoop from TTC DRIVER wFORMER
What’s it like to be a TTC bus driver? An Ask Me Anything (AMA) thread on the discussion site Reddit seeks to shed some light on the question. The driver claims to have grown frustrated with the profession, not to mention constant criticism from the public and irregular work hours, and left after less than seven years on the job. The thread also provides explanations, with the use of some colourful language, of transit teeth-gnashers, such as the need for short-turns.
BIKE LANES PROPOSED on WOODBINE wTWO-WAY
Could two-way bike lanes be coming to Woodbine Avenue? City staff is proposing building a set of contra-flow lanes that allow cyclists to travel in both directions on a one-way street. You’ll often see them in quieter, residential areas as a way to minimize car traffic. Now there’s a plan to build a set of connected contra-flow lanes on Woodbine, between O’Connor Drive and Queen Street East, as well as on stretches of Corley and Norway avenues.
