Sleep Out for ‘next generation’ April 9 JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com For many homeless youth, sleeping on the streets is an everyday reality. A group of young Toronto professionals will get a glimpse into some of the hardships those
young people face when they spend a night braving the elements in support of Covenant House Toronto. Covenant House’s Sleep Out: Next Generation will see men and women shunning suits for sleeping bags, spending the night outside Sunday, April 9.
This year will mark the second annual Sleep Out: Next Generation. The event arose as an offshoot of the popular Sleep Out: Executive Edition, which sees business leaders spend the night sleeping outside. “We wanted to look at the next generation of business and
community leaders – people who don’t fit into the CEO category we target with our executive sleep out,” said Covenant House special events manager Antonia Jennings of the event. “These are young professionals working their way up the ladder >>>MORE, page 2
After the uproar caused by the demolition of the venerable Stollery’s building on the southwest corner of Yonge and Bloor streets, the reaction to the project slated to be built on the site has been – perhaps surprisingly – positive. The developers, Mizrahi Developments, envision the site becoming home to Toronto’s second-tallest building at 80 storeys, or 318 metres. Dubbed ‘The One’, it would lag in height behind only the CN Tower. Unveiled at a public meeting last week, the proposal drew a response from those in attendance that surprised even developer Sam Mizrahi. “I thought people would love the design, but I was actually surprised by just how positive it was,” he said. The bottom eight storeys would contain high-end retail, with no columns or pillars obstructing views or the shopping experience. “It would be uncontaminated retail space with clean lines of sight,” Mizrahi said. >>>BUILDING, page 6

More sleepers and donations welcome >>>from page 1 and others who want to learn more about what we do (at Covenant House.)” The event serves to raise both awareness of Covenant House’s initiatives and funds for the facility’s programs. While the funds are important – Jennings said Covenant House is hoping those sleeping out raise $190,000 – raising awareness is just as crucial. “They’ll be getting a glimpse into what homeless youth face,” Jennings said. “They start off meeting some
of our youth and alumni and then they spend the night outside with nothing more than a piece of cardboard and a sleeping bag.” Participants are asked to raise a minimum of $2,000 apiece, with 92 per cent of the total amount raised going directly toward Covenant House’s many programs. In addition to providing shelter for homeless youth in the heart of downtown Toronto, the organization offers educational services, employment assistance, health supports
(including mental health programming) and more. Many of those who will be sleeping out on April 9 will gain a better understanding of Covenant House and those it serves, but they can also use the night as a means of furthering their own careers through networking. Horizon Alternative students tasked to build a better zoo JUSTIN SKINNER
jskinner@insidetoronto.com
W
hile most school science fairs are guaranteed to have the usual array of papier mache volcanoes and lemon batteries, students at Horizon Alternative School took a more hands-on approach for their projects. The students were tasked with building a better zoo, crafting scale models of enclosures for various animals that would improve the quality of life for the animals and provide better viewing opportunities for zoo visitors while being sustainable. “It’s a science fair that incorporates multiple disciplines,” said Horizon Alternative School lead teacher Nicole Aucoin. “We gave our students a big question that really allowed them to explore habitat design.” The enclosures were
designed to meet several criteria. They had to play a role in conservation, educate the public on the animals, meet the needs of the various creatures and their caregivers and be interactive where possible. They were also designed to mimic the animals’ natural habitats as much as possible. “They’ve been doing background research since September,” Aucoin said. “They had a couple of visits to the zoo and a visit to the (Ripley’s) aquarium. They got a PowerPoint presentation on habitat design from the habitat design team at the zoo and were allowed to go behind the scenes there and meet with the (animal) trainers.” Teacher Eric Paisley said the immersive project managed to cover more than simply science. “They had to use math skills, science, English, media studies and social studies at points in the

project,” he said. “Each exhibit was designed to be innovative. For the tiger shark tank, for instance, the students implemented Oculus Rift (3D virtual reality) goggles, using new technology to enhance the exhibit itself.”
The students clearly put plenty of thought and time into crafting their habitats, which they exhibited to judges and the public on Thursday, March 12. The various exhibits showed ingenuity both in terms of physical design and the
features they offered. “We have an upper and lower level because the polar bear is such an active animal, it needs a big space to meet its needs,” said Grade 8 student Andrew Phillips of his team’s polar bear exhibit. “There are three viewing centres and an enrichment area where kids can learn more about the animal.” The team’s dual-level exhibit also features a large water tank in which the polar bears can swim. “The filtration system (for the tank) is powered by a solar panel, which also provides energy for the cooling system,” said team member and Grade 7 student Daamini Sammeta.
Grade 8 students Charlotte Rotstein and Elliott Smith and Grade 7 students Mathilda Stock and Sameer Shakeel were happy to show off their design for an enclosure for the North American lynx. “Our main goals were to keep the lynx and the visitors safe,” Rotstein said. The exhibit featured glass reinforced by steel bars to ensure safety, plus various viewing areas, a climbing feature, a pond full of fish for the lynx to eat and more. “The lynx can be shy, so there are two caves for it to go into,” Stock said. “There’s a sleeping area in one where the lynx can sleep, and there’s also a kitchen and a shed (for trainers) with a solar panel for power.”

Diversity is our strength F
or coverage of one of North America’s most multicultural cities, our newest online project is a great fit. This week marks the launch of the latest web project on insidetoronto.com: Diversity Our Strength. It can be accessed at www.insidetoronto.com/diversity Borrowing its name from the City of Toronto’s motto, this project is an online source of news, events and information about Toronto’s diverse communities. And there’s plenty to cover. A city of nearly 2.8 million people, Toronto is home to more than 140 spoken languages. Nearly half of Toronto’s residents learned a first language other than English. Seemingly every corner of the city hosts vibrant cultural festivals whose roots come from other lands. In Diversity Our Strength, you can: • Visit the news section for Metroland Media Toronto’s coverage of Toronto’s our view multicultural communities and view stories organized by world geography. There is a feed of world Share your news coverage as well. • On our events page, see photo perspectives galleries of recent festivals and with us preview upcoming events in the community. • Find helpful tips in our resources section for acclimating to life in Toronto. Find out more about the services available to newcomers in the city. Check out a linguistic breakdown of Toronto’s population by neighbourhood. As the site prepares to grow further, the community and the organizations that serve it have roles to play, too. Are you a non-profit agency that serves Toronto’s immigrant population or a cultural centre? We want to list your profile. Do you have a story idea? We’d like to see it. Do you have an event to share with the community? You have a platform to do so. Toronto is a city that prides itself on its citizens being able to celebrate and respect their differences. Anything that enables citizens from diverse backgrounds to gather together can help forge lasting connections at the community level. Communities benefit greatly when a wide variety of perspectives and experiences are at the table. If you are interested in contributing, have some questions or anything else to share on the project, email project manager Paul Futhey at pfuthey@ insidetoronto.com

NDP leader Thomas Mulcair’s support for city gives Mayor John Tory leverage It is a good thing that former Ontario Progressive Conservative party leader John Tory is taking the nonpartisan part of his job so seriously. Otherwise, his meeting with federal NDP leader Thomas Mulcair would have been very awkward indeed. Mulcair came to Toronto early this week bearing gifts – or at least the promise of gifts. The leader of Canada’s Official Opposition told a crowd at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, effectively, that Toronto was his, and his party’s favourite: that the city and the region were the most important in Canada, and that money and attention would flow here from a federal NDP government. To specifics: the NDP would create 164,000 new affordable daycare spots in the Greater Toronto Area over the next eight years;
david nickle the city the minimum wage would be set federally at $15 an hour; and the GTA would receive $90 million a year more in funding from an increased share of the gas tax. This is powerful stuff. Affordable daycare and a higher minimum wage would mitigate the income inequality that is degrading the city. The $90 million in gas tax money would go a long way to improving and just maintaining the sputtering Toronto Transit Commission system. Poverty and transportation have been widely identified as pressing issues for Torontonians, and Mayor Tory has put both of those things at the top of his to-do list for the coming term of council.
Tory and Mulcair met Monday at Toronto City Hall, the day following Mulcair’s speech. The two faced TV cameras and reporters immediately afterward, comfortably side-by-side and clearly on the same page. Our mayor was generous in his praise for the policy, but careful. He noted the gas tax promise was one that built on transit funding that had been initiated by the Liberals and enshrined by the Conservative government. It was more, and that was good. And it was hard not to like that notion that Toronto was the most important place in Canada – that being a song Tory’s been singing for some time. Still, Tory wouldn’t endorse – and he would likely be foolish to do so. Mulcair and the NDP are the Official Opposition
in only the most tenuous sense; the party gained its unprecedented influence under the irreplaceable leadership of the late Jack Layton. The promises Mulcair made are really more powerful as ideas right now than they are as likely outcomes. But for now, that is all right. Mulcair has put forward the best and most reasonable federal agenda for cities since another unlikely prime minister, Paul Martin, almost a decade ago. It is the agenda that others will be held against – and that they will have to at least address if they hope to gain a foothold in this voterich region. And that gives Tory some leverage, in an arena where until recently it seemed as though he had very little.

Phil Connell’s short film, Survival Guide, available online JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com A year after it earned acclaim – and a Newcomer to Watch nod for young lead Annie Rutherford – at the Toronto International Film Festival, the short film Survival Guide is now available for all to watch. Directed by Queen West resident Phil Connell, the story is set on St. Patrick’s Day 1987 and follows its protagonist, 11-year-old Fleur, as she grapples with being left to fend for herself after a Girl Guide meeting. Ratcheting up the tension is the fact that another young girl had recently been abducted in the area. It all adds up to a unique take on the traditional coming-of-age story. “The movie really culminates at a specific and important point in Fleur’s life – the first time in a child’s life when they feel really alone, what that does to them and how they deal with it,” Connell said. Connell is particularly proud that Survival Guide easily passes the Bechdel Test, which was developed in reaction to gender bias in movies. “This was a girl’s story, about a girl and not focused on boys at all,” he said. “The story was written by

Building to connect with PATH, subway
Diversity Our Strength
>>>from page 1 The upper 72 storeys would contain 560 residential units, with 600 underground parking spots underneath. Mizrahi said the development would make a point of improving the public realm. “We plan on widening the sidewalks and creating a place of congregation for people in the area,” he said. “It will also connect to the PATH (underground pedestrian walkway) and to both the Yonge and Bloor subway lines.”
Diversity Our Strength – it’s Toronto’s motto. It’s also the name of the newest Metroland Media Toronto online portal. Launched this week, www. insidetoronto.com/diversity is a growing compilation of news, events and resources dedicated to reaching Toronto’s diverse communities. The city is home to people who speak more than 140 languages, half of Toronto’s population was born outside of Canada and the city is a place where nearly half of residents’ first language is not English. “Toronto is one of the most multicultural cities in the world,” said Paul Futhey, project lead and editor with Metroland Media Toronto. “It’s important that we find new ways to present our content to our readers.” Included in the website: w NEWS: Metroland Media Toronto’s news coverage of Toronto’s diverse communities: available in a general feed and also accessible in sections based on world geography. A world news feed is available as well. w EVENTS: an events section with photo galleries of recent cultural celebrations as well as links to upcoming multicultural events. w RESOURCES: a section that includes some helpful tips for new-
Positive feedback The positive feedback given to the proposal is a far cry from the anger sparked in some corners by the demolition of the old Stollery’s store and its familiar façade. Mizrahi noted calls to preserve the building came only after his company inquired about its status – it was not protected as a heritage building – invested some $2 million into purchasing the property and began the demolition process. The façade itself may no longer face Yonge and Bloor, but the limestone that comprised it is still in Mizrahi’s hands. “We kept the limestone and we

intend to create a monument for the Stollery family and for the city that will pay tribute to their legacy,” he said. “It will be designed with the City and with local stakeholders and the family giving their input.” There will also be public consultations on the building itself, which has yet to be approved at council. Even given the densification of the YongeBloor area – a tall tower is being built at the intersection’s southeast corner – The One would be the tallest building in the area by far.

‘Game-changer’ For his part, however, Mizrahi feels it is a fitting building in a busy downtown neighbourhood. “I’m very proud of it,” he said. “I think it’s a game-changer.” Toronto Centre-Rosedale councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam, whose ward houses the site where the proposal would be built, did not respond to requests for comment prior to The Mirror’s deadline.

New Site comers to the city, key statistics and a call for directory submissions. As the site grows, we’re looking for significant community involvement, whether it’s news tips, event submissions, or community organizations and cultural centres creating online profiles to be part of a directory. “Our goal is always to find ways to better connect people to their communities,” Futhey said. “We want the community to be a part of this.” Questions? Spring is just around the corner, and that’s usually the time when homeowners start looking around the home and consider what improvements they might like to make when warm weather finally hits. Perhaps you’d like to breathe new life into an outdated kitchen. Or you’ve been dreaming all winter about hosting a BBQ on a new deck. But few renovation projects go off without a hitch. Homeowners considering doing it themselves may be surprised at just how much work and coordination goes into any project. “People think it’s easy, I can do
it myself, I can find a cabinet guy,” says Paul Switzeny, co-owner of The HandyForce, who recently opened a second location in North York. “No project goes totally as planned, but we’ll be there to deal with it.” The HandyForce is a full solution company. TARGET CANADA
Ezer Mizion bone marrow fundraiser JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com With those in need of bone marrow transplants often unable to find a perfect match, global charitable organization Ezer Mizion is looking to broaden its donor database. Ezer Mizion, Israel’s largest not-for-profit organization, provides a multitude of services, including a life-saving bone marrow registry. By setting a target of 1.2 potential donors, Ezer Mizion feels a proper match could be found for virtually all Jewish people worldwide. “Most ethnic groups are severely underrepresented (at Canadian Blood Services) including Jewish-Canadians,” said Ezer Mizion Canada executive director Raquel Benzacar Savatti. “If you’re a member of an ethnic minority and you need a bone marrow transplant…the likelihood of a match coming from the same ethnic group is 99 per cent.” She noted only some 25 to
30 per cent of those in need of a bone marrow transplant due to cancer or other genetic diseases have a donor match in their own family. With Canada’s Jewish population totalling only 400,000 – roughly half of which live in the Toronto area – the odds of Jewish Canadians finding an appropriate donor are small. Ezer Mizion’s database has saved the lives of 30 Canadians to date, plus countless more around the world, with Jewish and nonJewish recipients alike benefiting from the service. To raise awareness about the issue, Ezer Mizion Canada is hosting its first ever Benefit for Life, a special gala event, which will be attended by former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak. “We want to raise funds and awareness, and this is a great way for us to get people to pay attention,” Benzacar Savatti said. “Some people will come out to support us, but a lot will come out to see Ehud
Barak, and with the election in Israel happening (March 17) I’m sure he’ll have a lot to say.” Benzacar Savatti noted a lot of high schools have begun conducting drives to have students swabbed and entered into potential donor databases, but more must always be done, particularly when it comes to meeting the needs of ethnic minorities in particular. “Not everyone can be a donor – some aren’t the right age or have health problems that prevent them from getting into the database – but we really encourage everyone to get swabbed (and become part of the donor database,)” she said. The benefit will take place at the Carlu, 444 Yonge St., on the 7th floor, on Sunday. A VIP reception will begin at 6 p.m. with the full program, including a keynote speech by Barak, starting at 7:30 p.m.

11 Division officer Pan Am torchbearer CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com The Pan Am Torch was unveiled Monday at the Ontario Science Centre along with the names of the first torchbearers who will be carrying the flame. “It will be seen by millions. It will bring Canadians together,” said Saad Rafi, CEO of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games ( TO2015). “These Games are going to be special.” About 3,000 torchbearers in total are expected to complete, on average, a 200-metre segment during the 41-day torch relay. Dignitaries in attendance included Toronto Mayor John Tory, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, and TO2015 Board Chair David Peterson, who each announced one of the first nine torchbearers. Zsofi Balazs, 24, had the chance to hold the torch at the London Olympic Games where she competed for Canada as a competitive distance swimmer.

Stephen Rigby, of OLG, announces Olympian Zsofia Balazs as one of the torchbearers for the TO2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games during a ceremony at the Ontario Science Centre.
But this will be her first time running with the torch. “I feel great. It’s a huge honour,” said Balazs, who is also an 11 Division police officer. Echoing Rafi’s sentiments, she added the torch relay really brings the community together. “It just brings a smile on everyone’s face,” Balazs said. In addition to being a torch-
bearer, Balazs is also hoping to qualify to swim in the Pan Am Games in her hometown with the world watching the Games. “I think Toronto deserves the attention,” she said. Triathlete Simon Whitfield, who won medals in both the Olympic and Pan Am Games, will also be one of the torchbearers as he was in the Vancouver Olympic Games. “I felt so much responsibility for something that was so important,” recalled Whitfield, adding the torch relay really brings a sense of community. Thousands of torchbearers will carry the torch through 130 communities with the relay in Canada starting May 30 and making its final stop on July 10 at the Opening Ceremony of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games.
