JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Thanks to a trio of University of Toronto students, the Toronto Central Grosvenor St. YMCA Centre has a new, more welcoming and more sustainable front concourse. Greg Bunker, David Garcia and Jessica Wagner won a student competition to redesign the space using repurposed tire rubber. The competition, held by the Ontario Tire Stewardship (OTS), received entries from seven Ontario schools. The winning entry was actually realized, making it one of a very few student design competitions where the winners actually get to see their visions become a reality. “We were trying to strike a balance between doing something fresh and something functional,” Bunker said. “Seeing your project get built from start to finish is something not a lot of students get to see.” The new design features some six tons of rubber from roughly 900 scrap tires, which has been converted into a durable but forgiving walking surface and seating blocks. There is also additional bicycle parking, while a “climbing vine” feature has yet to be added to one of the walls. >>>winning, page 8

Bigger location for CSI Spadina JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com With an ever-growing number of members benefiting from its shared space and collaborative opportunities, the Centre for Social Innovation (CSI) Spadina is getting set to make a much-

needed move into a bigger location. CSI Spadina is one of CSI’s three Toronto locations, with a fourth site in New York. The organization brings a variety of not-for-profits and social entrepreneurs together under one roof to help them cut costs

while providing networking opportunities. It also hosts events and provides support to start-ups looking to make a difference in the world. Having grown in leaps and bounds over the past decade, CSI has purchased a 64,000square-foot building across the

street from its fourth floor space at 215 Spadina Ave. and expects to move in once its current lease expires. To help cover the cost of the building purchase, CSI is offering community bonds with returns of three to 4.5 per cent, >>>CSI, page 14

Singer/songwriter Natty Valencia’s parody of Meghan Trainor’s hit, ‘All About That Bass’, has turned into a YouTube sensation.

All About That Bass rebuttal by Toronto singer has already logged 476,000 YouTube hits JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Pop star Meghan Trainor has been lauded by many for her hit single and ode to curvy women ‘All About That Bass’. For downtown Toronto singer Natty Valencia, however, the song is still guilty of body shaming. Valencia has recorded her own rebuttal to Trainor’s song, altering the lines to be more inclusive, and uploaded her song to YouTube. “I hear (the original) everywhere I went and it’s catchy and I love Meghan Trainor’s voice,” Valencia said. “She’s celebrating bigger women, which is great, but she’s pushing down other women to do it. It’s not right whether it’s skinny women shaming bigger women or bigger women shaming skinny women.” Valencia has grown up petite and knows everyone is prone to body issues and criticisms from others. “I’m five feet tall and I always hear from people telling me I should eat more,” she said. “So many girls are hurt by others saying things like ‘oh, you must be anorexic.’” Her parody version of ‘All About That Bass’ aims to empower women of all shapes, sizes and appearances. Unlike

Trainor’s original song, her cover also makes a point of stressing that women should not look at their bodies as a means to get a man. “You shouldn’t have to look a certain way for a guy,” she said. The video has certainly struck a chord – in just over three weeks since its release, the track had been viewed more than 476,000 times, a definite rarity for someone as new to the scene and as unknown as Valencia. “The overall response has been quite positive,” said the up-and-coming young singer, who lives in the ChurchWellesley Village area. “I’ve heard from a lot of girls who have been shamed for their appearance and I’ve gotten a lot (of messages) from mothers that are very touching, who say they hear (Trainor’s song) every day when they’re driving their daughter to school

and are worried about the message.” Valencia hopes her song inspires young women to see themselves in a more positive light and sparks frank discussions between mothers and daughters about body image. She herself has worked with a youth group in her native Edmonton about self-esteem and body issues and has a sense of how prevalent the problem is in modern society. “I love changing the words to all songs around, but I recorded this one because it’s something I really feel strongly about,” she said. “(Body-shaming) is a real problem for young women today.” With her cover of ‘All About That Bass’ still gaining traction on YouTube, Valencia has also added her first original song to her channel. That song, titled ‘My Body’, looks at the awkwardness so many people feel around someone they’re interested in. t’s been 16 years since six municipalities were formed into the City of Toronto. And yet, more than a decade and a half after amalgamation, Toronto is still dealing with numerous policy discrepancies, bylaw inconsistencies and service disparities in its various neighbourhoods. Rules governing anything from snow removal to mechanical leaf collection to rooming house bylaws can be markedly different depending on what area of the city you live in. It’s completely understandable why York South-Weston Councillor Frances Nunziata wants to approach the budget committee to explore extending mechanical leaf collection to all parts of the city – including her ward. Currently, the service is only available in certain pockets of Etobicoke, Scarborough and a small part our view of York. How is it fair that residences mere blocks away in the Unified city same city can receive disproportionate levels of service? makes it It’s reasonable to expect there to be a transition period from stronger such a complicated process as the megacity amalgamation was. But now, in 2014, we’re into the sixth term of Toronto council in its current format. It’s past time to tidy this up. In the coming term, Toronto’s new council must make a sincere effort to build more consistent policy throughout the city – one that reflects a more unified entity that is Toronto. Councillors must understand there will be differences between putting forth their priorities from their constituents and looking at those priorities through a city-wide lens. Governing a city with the size, complexity and diversity of Toronto is a challenging task. But a city that has more consistency in its policies can take pride in a more equitable distribution of services and still respect the unique characteristics of its 140 neighbourhoods. Providing equal access to the benefits that come with being a resident of this city does nothing to change those valuable characteristics. The effects of amalgamation were felt strongly when it happened in 1998. The effects of amalgamation are still a hurdle today in this city. They will continue to be a hurdle as long as we don’t view Toronto as one unified entity. A more unified Toronto is a stronger Toronto. The sooner the city unshackles itself from a hodge-podge of policies the sooner it’s prepared to deal with present challenges.

Polite Revolution against ‘Fordian Tyranny of Bad Behaviour’ celebrates one year A year ago this week (and this day, as I write this on Tuesday) Toronto council did a very bold, and also quite fearful thing. In a meeting specially called for the purpose, council voted to dethrone the mayor of the day, and select a new leader from among their own. It is the closest a government in this city has come to open revolt – and one might hope, the closest it will ever come to happening again. Success Looking back over the past year, it’s fair to say Toronto’s experiment with revolution has been at least a measured success. Part of that may be that the roots of this particular revolution dovetailed so well with our national identity.

david nickle the city Not so much a Quiet Revolution, it was a Polite Revolution against a Fordian tyranny of Bad Behaviour. Mayor Rob Ford and his brother Doug perhaps unwittingly stoked that revolution during the meeting where council cut the mayor’s budget and stripped him of his powers, hollering at audience members, telling sex jokes and at one point knocking councillor Pam McConnell to the ground without so much as an excuse-me-ma’am. Norm Kelly was a true Father of the Revolution as he embraced his enhanced role as deputy (and defacto) mayor. He visited his shell-shocked council colleagues one by one, said

his please-and-thank-yous, and even as the mayorin-exile’s spiralling drama continued in the public corridors outside their offices and during parts of the monthly council meetings. Canadian way For the most part, council managed to politely ignore the Ford brothers, in a quintessentially Canadian way – passing an inoffensive budget, delaying an uncomfortable conversation about jets at the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, averting eyes at the prospect of hurrying ahead on city-wide contracting out of garbage collection. Things got boisterous on the campaign trail, but things do, and Torontonians clearly were only willing to have so much of it.

While some may have hankered for the old, hoot-and-holler approach to municipal governance, most turned away from Rob’s brother Doug Ford and cast their votes with the one candidate on the planet who could give even Norm Kelly a few lessons in table manners, the forcefully pleasant John Tory. This more than anything is evidence that the Polite Revolution has taken hold on at least a semi-permanent basis. As it turns out, Torontonians are not only fond of the traditional Canadian values of Peace, Order and Good Government: after a year of exposure to it, we’re also as it turns out fond of just a little peace and quiet.

Students bid farewell to retiring shopkeeper Rocco Fama CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com Hundreds of students from Winona Drive Senior and McMurrich Junior public schools chanted “Rocky” while the school band played the theme song of Rocky – all in appreciation for 90-year-old Rocco Fama. For nearly 30 years, Fama and his wife Doreen ran their pizza and convenience store directly across the street from the two schools near Winona Drive and St. Clair Avenue. But he was much more than just a local store owner as evidenced by the students, teachers and community members who came out to celebrate his retirement party last Thursday. “We would go there every day,” said Quinn Augustus, a Grade 8 student at Winona Public School, adding that’s where they would buy their snacks like brownies and honey buns.

Staff photo/Clark Kim

Josie Fama, left, and her father Rocco Fama are joined by students from Winona Public School and McMurrich Junior Public School Thursday as they celebrate the elder Fama’s retirement after running his business for nearly 30 years.

His friends Aman Mohammed, Cliff Granshaw and Celeste FigueroaGuerrero all agreed. “He also made us sand-

wiches, too,” Cliff said. And when they didn’t have enough cash on any given day, Celeste said that Fama would just allow them

to pay back later. While they’ll miss all the treats, the students said they’ll miss “Rocky” even more.

“It’s sad because he was a very kind man,” Aman said. Principal Joe Leibovitch recalled being invited to Fama’s house for a cup of espresso when he first came to Winona Drive a couple of years ago. “He told us that Winona and McMurrich were great schools,” said Leibovitch, noting he was also watching out for the kids. “He would help keep the community safe.” Fama, a man of a few words, wiped away tears during the ceremony and simply said he’d miss all the students “very much.” But it was time to close up shop, especially having to run the business the past eight years without Doreen, who died in 2006. Fama’s daughter, Josie, echoed his sentiments about how they felt about the neighbourhood they’ve served for decades. “It’s community. It’s family,” she said.

Winning design adds new seating >>>from page 1 “The climbing vine will create some contrast and give the space some verticality,” Garcia said. “People will be able to see it from Yonge Street and it will create a more friendly space, which is rare in Toronto.” The design competition is part of OTS’ ongoing efforts to recycle scrap tires. A similar initiative was used to redesign the front concourse of the Evergreen Brick Works. OTS executive director Andrew Horsman said his organization has prevented 60 million tires, or approximately 600,000 tons of rubber, from being diverted to landfill sites or burned over the past five years. YMCA of Greater Toronto president and CEO Medhat Mahdy said the design responded well to the needs of the Toronto Central Grosvenor St. YMCA Centre and its users. “(The design has) added more seating because community members wanted another area to meet,” he

said. Mahdy added additional bike parking had been listed as another priority by the downtown Y’s members, while new ramps and railings make the space barrier-free. “The result of this partnership is a more accessible, welcoming and environmentally friendly space that will be enjoyed by many for years to come,” he said. Toronto Centre MPP Glen Murray, Ontario’s Minister of

the Environment and Climate Change, said recycling is generally not the environmental panacea some believe it to be due to the energy required to recycle items such as plastic water bottles. He noted the YMCA’s makeover, however, differs given the durability of the rubber used. For more information on OTS and its design challenge, visit www.rethinktires.ca/designchallenge

‘Food Nation’ hopes council will work to create healthier city LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com If the mayor-elect and a number of new and returning councillors keep their election promises, creating a heathier Toronto through food will become a top priority at city hall. Sixteen newly elected councillors and Mayor-elect John Tory have thrown their support behind Food Nation, the one-year-old brainchild of Food Forward’s Food Justice Committee. “We look forward to working with the new council,” said Alison MacKenzie, a spokesperson for the initiative Food Nation, who lives in the Junction. “We’re thrilled the new mayor has endorsed us.” In a city as prosperous as Toronto, it might be tough to believe that one in 10 households suffers from food insecurity, a statistic that’s higher among immigrants and single parents. According to the Toronto

Board of Health, the cost of a nutritious food basket to feed a family of four for a week in Toronto is $183.10; that’s $782.82 a month – an increase of four per cent since 2012. Meanwhile, there are neighbourhoods in the city characterized as ‘food deserts’ because they’re not located in close proximity to quality and affordable food. These stats might sound dire, however, it’s not all doom and gloom. There is a grassroots organization whose mission is to create a healthier city through food – by educating and advocating for healthy food and communities that are inclusive, diverse, ethical, local and resilient. The registered non-profit ‘Food Forward,’ founded in 2010, is comprised of hundreds of people, businesses, and groups who share a passion for creating good food and good food jobs. Food Nation is its latest initiative, a movement that brought food justice to light during the municipal election.

Photo/COURTESY

Food Nation’s Stephanie Conroy, left, Darcy Higgins and Alison MacKenzie participate in a recent pop-up event at City Hall held to raise awareness of Food Nation and food policy as an election issue, by tossing bean bags into mayoral candidates’ heads.

One that garnered support from incumbent councillors and candidates alike. Food Nation representatives made a point to visit farmers’ markets during the 2014 campaign where they knew councillors and candidates would be to drum up enthusiasm and to seek support. The group hosted

a pop-up event at city hall where group members and passersby lobbed fruit-shaped bags at holes above pictures of the Toronto’s top mayoral candidates – trying to get food “into their heads” as a campaign issue. “Buzz grew around the issue,” said MacKenzie, adding that food advocacy organiza-

tions, such as FoodShare, has endorsed Food Nation. By endorsing the Food Nation platform, councillors have committed to putting into motion the organization’s five-point plan. This includes: • creating healthy food neighbourhoods, places to grow, cook, sell and buy fresh healthy food; • reducing poverty by ensuring as many as 250,000 Torontonians are able to afford healthy food by 2018; • creating good food jobs – thousands of jobs for youth and marginalized Torontonians; • increasing availability of healthy food by bringing fresh, healthy food to 100 food assistance programs; • and connecting “eaters and councillors” by listening and supporting constituents to create healthy food initiatives and jobs in each neighbourhood. During the last council term, Trinity-Spadina Councillor Mike Layton pointed out he

supported the food program in schools that ensured kids had full bellies to learn. The city encourages building applications to include food retail wherever possible. “Often we make allowances for certain types of retail that are needed to support fresh produce,” he said. In a letter to Food Forward before the election, Tory sang the praises of Food Forward and Food Nation and said he looked forward to working with the organization “in advocating a health focused food policy in the City of Toronto.” Re t u r n i n g Pa r k d a l e High Park Councillor Sarah Doucette first learned of Food Nation during one of its outreach events, held at Annette library. “I believe in this completely,” she said. “I love this idea. I’ll support them wherever I can.”

CSI Spadina looking to sell $4.3 million in community bonds to fund larger building >>>from page 1 depending on the amount invested. “Our total goal is $4.3 million and we’re at $1.5 million already,” said CSI Executive Director Tonya Surman. “We wanted to create a win-win, creating a space where the social mission sector could continue to thrive while promoting investment in urbanism.” CSI’s genesis came in 2003, when Surman, formerly of

the Partnership for Child Health and the Environment and co-founder of rabble.ca, Margie Zeidler of Urbanspace Property Group, Pat Tobin of Heritage Canada, Mary Rowe of Ideas That Matter and Eric Meerkamper of DECODE started thinking about how to better support the non-profit sector. “We just thought ‘what if we shared?’” said Surman, now CSI’s executive director. “It seemed so simple, getting

people to share photocopiers, fax machines, a fridge – and sharing a fridge is no easy task.” The founders began pitching the idea to not-for-profits and worked toward breaking down barriers between the differing groups and sectors. While there were high hopes from the get-go, even the founders were surprised at how well it worked out. “One thing you might have expected would be some

competition (among member organizations) for funding, but there was no competition,” Surman said. The founders targetted 14 organizations to make up CSI’s core membership, a number that has now grown to more than 1,600 member organizations across its four locations. “We thought it was a good idea and we really knew we had something after our first quarter when we had a

$572 surplus,” Surman said. “We had a scalable business model from the very beginning, but we didn’t know what the appetite would be or what the interest would be.” CSI charges members monthly fees for the use of desk or office space, though those costs are far less than not-for-profits would expect to pay if they were using their own space. Toronto’s Community Police Liaison Committees looking for a new image MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Volunteer committees that work with Toronto’s police know you probably haven’t heard of them, and they want to change that. “We could be more than what we’re doing,” Bruce Erskine told a meeting of the Toronto Police Services Board recently. Erskine is a member of a community police liaison committee, a civilian group attached to each police division in the city. The CPLCs, as well as Community Consultative Committees, which deal with cultural or religious minority groups, all meet monthly, or at least four times a year. A report CPLC representatives including Erskine presented to the board a year ago said the committees “are not well known,” adding many “are missing out on the opportunity of reaching out to the larger

population,” and have “lackluster relationships” with the police force and each other. The committees are “not promoting community safety effectively,” and ought to make more use of Toronto’s media, and social media to better promote themselves, the report says. Erskine, who works with the CPLC for 22 Division in Etobicoke, said members of different committees decided a few years ago “to get over the apathy that we were feeling at the time” and help each of the committees do a better job of helping police do theirs. After writing the report, the volunteers want to produce a guidebook for the committees that identifies best ways to work and makes them more visible in their communities. A draft of the guidebook should be ready for each group by February, said Tim Kocur, a volunteer for the CPLC 52 Division, south of Bloor Street downtown.

Kocur and Erskine said volunteers want to consult with leaders and rank and file members of the force in 2015, and want to launch a rebranding of CPLCs, one which Kocur said will probably include a new name. At Thursday’s meeting, the board didn’t approve their request for $25,000 to help with the rebranding. Though he welcomed the idea, Scarborough Councillor Michael Thompson said he could get a logo for CPLCs designed by volunteers. Thompson noted the report doesn’t speak about young people, and said many CPLC members are seniors and professionals, but many matters they deal with involve local youths. Erskine said the group is considering creating a “youth component” for all the committees and will encourage them to hold public meetings in different locations to increase their profile.

Credit Unions: A Breath Of Fresh Air In The Canadian Financial Environment In the early 1990s, the deregulation of the Canadian banking system enabled big banks to become even bigger through mergers and acquisitions. Trust company professional Fausto Gaudio was disheartened by this trend, which he felt minimized the more personal aspects of local banking. In response, he assembled a team that set out to found the Italian Canadian Savings & Credit Union Ltd. (IC Savings), which over its first 14 years grew to serve more than 12,000 clients across the Greater Toronto Area from six branches, with a seventh underway. This phenomenal success is a tribute to credit unions everywhere – so much so, that IC Savings was selected as one of six to be profiled in a global case study with the Filene Research Institute. Of particular interest, IC Savings’ growth was not the

result of mergers or acquisitions, and the firm is extremely efficient. “Bigger isn’t always better,” Mr. Gaudio says.“Small- and mid-size firms can turn around decisions quickly to apply smart approaches to methodologies and remain client focused. For example, rather than use automated adjudication for loans, we look at each family’s story and attach merit accordingly. This is one of many things that differentiate us.”

Among the popular services at IC Savings is Perfetto., a combined savings/chequing account that offers a 1.75% daily interest savings rate, a very competitive monthly fee for unlimited transactions, and for those who qualify, a flexible line of credit. Busy customers appreciate this streamlined option, and many find that Perfetto. is the only account they need. (ICSavings.ca)

Bethune wOnNorman honoured the 75th anniversary of

his death, noted Canadian surgeon and innovator Norman Bethune received special recognition from Heritage Toronto and the Toronto Legacy Project. A plaque was unveiled on Nov. 12 marking 136 Robert St. as one of the homes in which Bethune lived as a young boy. Though born in Gravenhurst, the doctor spent many of his formative years in Toronto and studied at the University of Toronto. He lived for years on Harbord Street while at university, but that house was demolished years ago. The Robert Street home was a suitable location to recognize the man and his contributions to Canadian society and the world at large. “This house had significance to us because it was a personal home for Dr. Bethune, and it’s close to U of T, with which he is permanently associated,” said Grace Westcott of the Toronto Legacy Project. Bethune invented the mobile blood transfusion unit, which saved many lives in the Spanish Civil War, Sino-Japanese War, Second World War and other conflicts. He was also responsible for bringing medicine to rural China during the SinoJapanese war, and was a life-long proponent of socialized medicine. Airport wC oIsland tunnel nstruction on

Lastman’s Bad Boy Edition

Lastman’s Bad Boy GROWS again! Ontario’s favorite Superstore is proud to announce the Grand Opening of its newest location in the heart of Toronto in Honest Ed’s. Blayne Lastman, CEO, said “It’s an honour to partner with Honest Ed’s. People visit the store from all over and now, we have two of the greatest discounters coming together for the very first time”.
